So what'd you guys think of the Golden Globe awards last night? You into that kind of stuff, or are award shows not your thing? Oscar nominations are due out tomorrow morning as well. What are your predictions? Who do you want to see win?

I was excited to see LOTR take home best movie (drama), director, and the score and song awards. The more hardware for this flick, the better. Well deserved, and hopefully it'll repeat, along with Jackson as Director, at the Oscars.
I was also glad to see Charlize and Renee win their actress awards. Charlize was amazing in that Monster role! Good to see Sofia Coppola get the Screenplay too (not listed here).
My only disappointment last night was Johnny Depp not winning best actor for a Comedy film (comedy?). Hopefully Johnny will get another shot when the Oscar nods roll out tomorrow. But Bill Murray has always been insanely funny throughout his career, so I was excited to see him recognized with a GG award.
Should be interesting to see what surprises and disappointments the always interesting Oscar nominations have in store for us tomorrow morning!

I caught a bit of this show on VH1 tonight called 'Best Week Ever', and the had a spot about ROTK. One comedian mentioned something along these lines: " If Return of the King doesn't win the Best Picture Oscar, it's going to make the LA Riots look like kindergarten."

I'm definitely disappointed to not see the brilliant technical acting achievement that is Gollum/Andy Sedakis, not get nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I thought if a CG character ever had a shot at an acting nomination, it would be him... Oh well. :-\
Also shunned: Cold Mountain, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, and Tom Cruise. ::)
Since I'm more interested in the entertainment aspect of movies, moreso than the dramatic elements and all that nonsense, I'm pulling for ROTK and Pirates to do well. If ROTK doesn't at least win best picture and director, I'll be very pissed. I'd love to see Depp take home the best actor award too, since I loved Pirates, and thought he did an incredible job as Jack Sparrow. Guess we'll find out in about a month!
As for the Golden Globes awarded the other night - couldn't argue with too many of them really. Bill Murray's acceptance speech was pretty funny. Nice to see him win, since comedic performances usually don't get much recognition, and I've loved him ever since his old SNL and Stripes days... 8)
Hope George Lucas is paying attention to Peter Jackson and ROTK's nominations and wins, to see how it should be done. ::)

Whoops! Sorry about that! Thanks for taking care of that JediMAC, as I was just looking for my old thread here to bump it up for the Oscars this weekend. So what races have you guys interested? I'm really hoping that LOTR cleans house. That's just been such an amazing trilogy that I think they need to go out with the ultimate bang, and all the credit in the world, especially Peter Jackson.
I'm with JediMAC and am really hoping for an upset win by Johnny Depp too, for Pirates. Loved him in that movie!
So what's everyone's picks? My girlfriend is actually talking about throwing a little Oscar party over at her parent house with a bunch of our friends. Why do girls always have such a need to "entertain"? :P

Dang, this reminds me that I need to watch Lost in Translation and I wish I could have seen Mystic River before this weekend. I think ROTK is a lock for best picture and original song now that Pearl Jam isn't there to play spoiler...its a shame Sean Astin didn't get nominated

I watched Lost in Translation last night, great movie, definitely like the way Sofia has progressed as a film maker...agreed that Scarlett Johansson is a definite hotty, Bill Murray is an absolute genius and I would love for him to win but I don't think its going to happen. My pick stays with Penn as he's been a long time nominee. The only thing I would say is that he's a huge outsider and that may translate into a mini upset for Murray
As long as ROTK wins a bunch of awards I'll be happy tonight, I enjoy watching the show as long as Whoopi isn't hosting, for some reason I despise her

Yeah, I hear you. I've always gotten the feeling with him that he'd just be a cool, down-to-earth, regular guy, that wouldn't be above having a beer and shooting-the-sh1t with you if you ran to him at the local bar.
(And I guess he's my favorite actor now, since Harrison Ford's gone to sh!t over the last decade or so. That's what my Guzzlefish stats tell me, at least.)
Funny, too--the the two main guys duking it out for the Oscar tonight got their movie careers started in much the same way, by playing dumbasses in some (relatively) low-brow comedies in the early eighties. . . (one a perpetually-stoned surfer dude, the other, a perpetually-retarded groundskeeper. . .)
And, did anyone besides me see House of Sand and Fog? What a great (if not horribly sad) movie--with some absolutely terrific performances by Kingsley and. . . that woman, playing his wife. Shohreh Aghdashloo. She might not win tonight, but I hope she does.
It's a shame that more people didn't see that movie. It'll probably do better on cable and DVD than it did in the theatres. . .

And, funny, too, with Lost in Translation: I love it--I've seen it at least three or four times in the month that I've had the DVD.
My mom and dad watched it (separately--they're divorced), and they both hated it, for two different reasons:
Mom hated it because she didn't like the way that the movie made it seem okay for two married people to even think about going outside of their respective marriages (no matter for what reason).
Dad kept asking "what's the point?" and "where is this going?", (along with a few "I don't get it"s) and the only time he laughed was when Bob was having difficulties with the excersize machine. I think he was expecting more of a standard fish-out-of-water comedy, with Bill trying to get along in Tokyo, and not the drama between two wayward people that it really was.

I believe M & C won some award for sound-something, that I thought it beat out Rings for, but I heard wrong, apparently. . .

Yeah, Bill looked a little peeved, but I would be, too. There's no shame in being disappointed, and Sean Penn's speech about how there's no such thing as 'best' acting was right on.
ROTK: Proof sometimes the right thing does happen.
Sofia Coppola: Richly deserving, she wrote/directed the best American film in years, and really made the best film of 2003, but ROTK won not for itself, but the trilogy.

Ms. Zellweger is a very good actress, especially when she's acting surprised that's she's won. She reacted the EXACT same way when she won the Golden Globe, almost to the point that made you wonder if it was rehearsed. Her sincerity comes off a little earnest and maybe a bit forced. Maybe it's just me.

So ROTK took away 11 awards. I'm right there with OCB on this - the movie itself doesn't deserve the honor, but the trilogy as a whole does. Which I think isn't fair on really great movies like Mystic River that just didn't have a chance against a sort of pent-up vote. On the other hand, like he mentioned in his speach, it's wonderful to see a fantasy film actually get some recognition.
Not a member of the Renee "Squinting is Cute" fanclub. I don't get the greatest vibe of sincerity off of her. Though, I agree Spuffy, she can act.

To be on-topic:
I think that it should be a new rule, that all of the Oscar winners each year have to get together and make a new movie together to be debuted the weekend of the next Oscars.
So, next year, we'll have a movie written by Sofia Coppola, directed by Peter Jackson, and starring Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, Tim Robbins, and Renee Zellweger--and then made by pretty much the entire crew of Lord of the Rings.
Let's make that a rule.

Glad to see ROTK (LOTR) getting it's due finally. 11 for 11... Not too shabby! 8) Can anyone refresh my memory on how many they won for the first two movies? I know they got fairly shunned, but I don't recall how badly now.
As for the show itself, it wasn't great, but there were some entertaining moments, topped by Adrien Brody's binaca spray. I hit the floor in hysterics when he did that! :P I also enjoyed the "Return of the Host" intro with Billy, the Mighty Wind performance, the You're Boring song, and especially the clip where Michael Moore gets stomped. That was a classic!
I was disappointed the Best Actor award didn't go to either Depp or Murray though, but other than that, no major gripes. I just would've hated to be another movie competing against the steamroller that was ROTK last night. Why weren't Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli there though? That was weak... I see Russell Crowe was boycotting the show too.
BTW, gotta agree with Billy - way to really go out on a limb there 4-LOSW Jr. ::)

My wife and I were wondering the same thing, where the rest of the cast from LOTR was. I can only assume they were filming a movie somewhere or something along those lines, because you would sure think more of them would have been there otherwise.
Back on topic now, I am really glad that Return of the King won what it did. I really went into the night hoping that it would win best picture, and Jackson would win best director. To go 11 for 11 is just outstanding, and very deserved I think. We finally got a chance to sit down and watch the EE of FOTR (TTT is next weekend hopefully), and it just amazes me how great each of these movies is. There isn't a stinker in the bunch, and I think that is a true credit to Tolkien, Peter Jackson, and the entire cast and crew. It isn't a movie trilogy where I would say "nah, let's watch one of the other ones", because they are all very well done, in my opinion. Anyways, very happy for all those involved, they deserve all the credit in the world.
Also...I was hoping that Depp or Murray would have gotten best actor, but I guess I wasn't surprised they didn't.

So anyway, I'm looking at the Golden Globe nominations this morning and I can't believe that it was so hard to find five differnent women they could nominate for best actress in a comedy or musical that they had to nominate Streep twice.
And where the hell was District 9? One nod for screenplay? Come on. Is there some crappy rule that disqualified it from film and director nominations? But Avatar, which looks to have a cookie cutter plot, does?
And why wasn't The Shield nominated for anything? Or at least Walt Goggins for supporting honors?
I used to like the Golden Globes because they seemed to do a better job than the Academy, but I think they missed this year.

My big problem are films getting nominations before they are even released (Avatar ???). I was disappointed that the Shield was not nominated but the finale was so long ago and most people forgot about the show. Come to think of it, was the finale even in '09? I was disappointd that Breaking Bad had no nominations either.

No science fiction film has ever won an Oscar for Best Picture. This might be interesting as 2 are running plus for the 1st time since 1943, the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

I would love to see either Up, District 9, or Basterds get the Best Picture award. They were all pretty solid films. I haven't seen Blind Side or The Hurt Locker, but I've heard both were very good and look forward to seeing both when the DVDs get cheaper.
I really hope Avatar doesn't win Best Picture. It's an overhyped film with a hackneyed plot. The acting was okay, but the VFX were really the only place where it shined. I can't say I'm surprised to see it among the nominees, but there are much better films that deserve that award.

I own every best picture winner all the way back to the beginning in 1927. I'd love to see Up or District 9 win. Those being the only two I've seen on the list. I will own Basterds one way or the other eventually.

I'm hoping Avatar doesn't win the director or film awards. It's quite deserving of the technical type awards but the plot and acting doesn't take it to the level of best picture.
District 9 and Hurt Locker are my two favorites from this list. I really think Hurt Locker was the best film I saw in 2009, just barely beating District 9.

I saw Crazy Heart over the weekend. Not sure if it's going to get a Best Picture nod, but it is one hell of a good movie. And Jeff Bridges sure as hell better be nominated and win the Oscar for Best Actor. His performance was simply amazing.

Overall I thought it was a good show.
Of course it was too long. After it only ran from 7 to 10 last year I thought maybe they had turned a corner, but starting at 730 was weird and then having it be more than three hours was a bit much.

Not to mention Hollywood is the master of "look how good we are" and all that fanfare.
I didn't watch much of it...I can't stand award shows. Saving Private Ryan was on and my daughter was being fussy and I had Masters work to do, so there was so much more I really needed to focus on.

Since actors are the ones that vote for Oscars, no actor is going to pick a movie that is mostly animated. They are going to pick something that has actors in. Its even better if it has a political statement attached. Movies that do well in the box office typically do not win best picture.
Personally, the thing I like about the Academy Awards is the historical and behind the scenes pieces they show. If they cut the acceptance speeches out, the show would be fairly entertaining. Of course, that is what tivo is for.

Hurt Locker, despite being a war film, was decidedly apolitical.
I think Avatar didn't win because it simply wasn't best picture material. If there was a category for best blockbuster, or best spectacle, it would win hands down...

One thing I found odd... they claimed during the "Horror" homage that no horror film had been honored since The Exorcist. Did they forget Silence of the Lambs? Maybe they thought Silence was more of a drama...

Also, the intros for best actor/actress were absolutely awful. They were creepy... almost made my skin crawl.

That's why I don't pay attention to award shows anymore. Each movie is not given an equal chance and there's obvious reasons for bias in the voting. Seems like a Horror/Action/Sci-Fi movie is discredited just because of it's genre. If the awards aren't going to pay attention to movies that matter to the ticket-buyers, then why should the ticket-buyers pay any attention to the awards shows? Don't get me wrong, I thought the Hurt Locker was an excellent movie and was very happy to see it get nominated, but it's not ground breaking and visually stunning in the way that Avatar is.

I guess there is some risk that whichever movie sells the most tickets also ends up getting the award, but selling a boatload of tickets is generally an early indicator that the movie is pretty good.

I've gotten sick of the entire, 'look how great we are' vibe these award shows put out. Considering this is one of the only professions in the world that has more than one (if any at all) award ceremony every year, they should be a tad bit more humble about it. My wife won't even watch the ceremonies any more. She actually was getting mad during the 'Best Actor' monologues given by the other actors. It got to the point where she left the room before they delivered the last one.
The main highlight for me yesterday was having Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin as the hosts. I thought that they did a really good job. And I'm sure that the Ben Stiller 'spoof' would have gone over much better had Sacha Baron Cohen been there with him, but it was pretty bad with just him doing it...
I was really happy to see that Christoph Waltz won the 'Best Supporting Actor' award for Inglorious Basterds. He had a great performance in that movie.

I don't like that either because, like you said, it dilutes it way too much. I don't think any award show will ever be perfect, but I think the Oscars are as close as it gets. With that being said, I'm a huge movie buff. I love movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. So I think I may be biased myself the opposite direction if that makes sense.

I am more in the camp of if it sells a certain amount of tickets then it is "popular" but not necessarily "good", but I also don't feel that JUST because the ticket buyers like it means it is too "commercial" to deserve Oscar recognition.
Has anybody ever put together the numbers to see how previous Oscar Nominees (and winners) have done in the Box Office (prior to their re-release after their nomination)?
I wonder if back during the Golden Age of Cinema if Ticket Sales and Awards were more in line with one another.
I just dislike the arrogance of most Movie Critics and insiders who feel that WE the ticket buying public are not sophisticated enough to understand why Movie A is so much better than Movie B...
But then again, I just watched the Winter Olympics and avoided any event that involved a "judge" or had a subjective scoring system. Either you made it across the finish line first, scored the most points or some other objective standard.
I think I saw 2 of the 10 Nominees this year. Mostly because I really don't need to go to the Movies to get preached at or to intentionally be depressed. I have the office for latter.
As far as the Oscar Presentation goes though...
Did they go back to "The Winner is...."? OR was it some other show that did away "Winners and losers"?
I recorded it on DVR for my wife and didn't think to add extra minutes since they play music and make people get off stage (even the White Kanye)...so she missed the last 4 (you know the BIG ones)....

The "I'm a movie critic and I'm smarter than you moron viewers" is very annoying.
However, I seldomly see a Best Picture winner and think "that wasn't good". I had no want to see Slumdog Millionaire last year. Then I saw it and it was excellent. And this year, no matter how much people say Avatar was good, it does nothing for me. I still have't seen it.
And I am just naming stuff off the top of my head, but as far as box office success winning recentlyish: Return of the King, Forrest Gump, Titanic. I'm drawing a blank now, but it isn't like they poo poo everything popular to look "smarter" than us.

Return of the King and Forrest Gump I can agree with. I think ROTK was more for the entire trilogy then the movie itself. Gump was just a lot of fun.
However, I still don't understand the popularity of Titanic. That movie was about an hour too long and the story was worst than Avatar's. It had too much running up and down the dam ship with very poor acting. Why did they have to film the thing sinking in real time?! Gosh, I hate that movie!

I redboxed Where the Wild Things are last night, and while the movie itself was...different than expected (I still liked it though) I cannot understand HOW this did not get ANY nominations. Art direction? Cinematography? Effects? Costumes? The whole experience was gorgeous to look at. Original score?
