Title: Toy Fair 2013

Well, Toy Fair is a few weeks away (Sat. Feb 9).  I'm not sure what to expect.  Hopefully, we'll get some answers as to what's going on with the SW line.  Anyways, I thought I'd open a thread here.

I'll be helping JD out with TF again, so if you have questions that you'd like us to ask a Hasbro rep, feel free to put it here.

It won't be answered but I hope someone asks about the declining quality of plastic/paint, specifically on the first wave of 2013 Class I vehicles. The ships look like they're cheap Happy Meal toys and the paint on the figures is awful. The Yoda's eyes are painted on his cheeks... that's worse than the Indiana Jones line

Sadly I think paint ops are only going to get worse. :(

I would like to know if any new battle-packs are planned for 2013 or if that niche is officially dead.

Would also like to know the fate of the updated battle droid for the TCW line that was originally shown last year but seems to be missing from Wave 1 now.

The paint was bad last year on the Republic Attack Fighter with Anakin (that was last year, right?), Anakin's face was terrible on the few examples I saw.

IIRC, they said any Battle Packs would be exclusives from here on. (hey, were's Battlefields of Naboo?  :P )

Since the whole line is starting from scratch, I don't even know what to ask them.  Perhaps, "WTF?"
Title: Re: Toy Fair 2013

Hah.

Hasbro - "Yes, we're really pleased with what we have shown with our Star Wars brand going forward.  We'd now like to open up to a brief Q&A period.  Yes, you in the black shirt with the haircut, start us off please."

Black shirt guy with the haircut - "Yeah, so, WTF?"

Hasbro - "I'm sorry, but is that to something specific?"

Black shirt guy with the haircut - "No, just a general 'WTF?' to all things Star Wars, by Hasbro, and thank you for your time responding."

And Scockery is right...  At some point this past year, they did announce that the Class I's were kind of supplanting their battlepack format I believe.  To be honest, I'm glad.  The battlepacks had been killed at this point.  If they're going to do multi-packs at all I'd prefer seeing them go exclusive since those have been quite superior to anything else.  Price hasn't always been great but sales usually helped that along, and no battlepack really had anything great in it for the price either.  So to that end, I'm glad they're dead.

Here's a Q "I was reading that Iron Man figures were going to be 6:00, and have less articulation.  Is this the way that SW is going?"

Personally, if they did this with style, like the Bespin Luke fro the recent Battle Pack, I'd be ok with it.  If they made the main line, simpler, and more cost effective, and then 20-25 Vintage style figures a year, I think that would be good.

But you know they will make it 6 points, add no accessories and raise the price a dollar.

I'd gladly accept reduced price and articulation in the Clone Wars line if they would just improve the goddang figure choices.   Bo Katan at 5POA is a hell of a lot better than no Bo Katan at all.

Adam makes a great point in his Q&A column this week, whoever looked at that design of Darth Maul with Mando legs and figured it would not make a compelling choice for a figure should just be fired on the spot.

Those Iron Man Assembler figures with swappable arms and stuff? Still $9.99 according to a press release.

So, advocating less articulation, you'll get it. But less price, not likely.

UK Toy Fair news, Anakin to Vader figure has been "revealed", artwork only picture so far.

http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2013/01/22/new-anakin-to-vader-figure-wins-best-new-toy-award-at-toy-fair-2013/ (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2013/01/22/new-anakin-to-vader-figure-wins-best-new-toy-award-at-toy-fair-2013/)

Is it 3 3/4"? Wonder if it uses the Iron Man Assembler system?

To me, I like the articulation.  Granted not every figure needs 10+ POA... I would be happy with a Sim Aloo with 5ish POA so that he is consistent with the other 2 dignitaries released (we never see them do anything but stand besides descending the ramp of the Emperor's shuttle.  Padmes, senators, handmaidens and backrground characters don't need to be super articulated.

Here are a few questions I have if you have an opportunity to ask them...

1.) What exactly can we expect to see for Hasbro Star Wars this year?  With the loss of Build-A-Droid, it seems like there is very little coming our way in the near future.  Is this just the lull before the movie years or is there something new on the horizon.

2.) Is Hasbro familiar with Medicom's Kubrick line of figures?  These have been fan favorites, but production has died off in the last year or two.  I know it's a long shot, but does Hasbro have any plans to produce something similar or any other new non-standard ( 3 & 3/4") lines of figures?

3.) Is there any chance we will see a return of the comic packs in the near future?  These seem to be selling well in the Marvel Universe line and there are some great new characters to be made from some of the great Dark Horse material and other sources in recent years.

4.) There still appears to be strong demand for some kind of modular Death Star playset.  Can you tell us if anything like this is on the horizon or even under consideration?

Thanks Steve,
Justin

I couldn't agree more. I've passed on all the new deluxes - the vehicles look awful in person.  The only one that I am remotely considering getting is the MTT set.

This is when they laugh and tell us that this is a stupid idea.  Because they have proven time and again that they know exactly what they're doing, and we need to quit asking for dioramas/playsets.

I'm a little disappointed witht he new Class I sets as well...  not even just paint, but the direction in general.  I've soured a little even on the Yoda fighter over time.  Again, not paint, but the concept.  For me, the ship's too small to be practical as a starfighter.  To me, the original design of that ship was kind of pushing the limits of a fighter and I was glad it needed a separate hyper ring.  In the OT then the A-Wing is similar, cutting edge fighter technology, and has progressed to include a smaller hyperdrive and things.  Whole side topic there.

Anyway, So that Anakin to Vader looks a lot to me like they're ALREADY looking to resculpt and redo the light-up saber Anakin and Vader.  I couldn't be less interested if they tried to specifically look at me as a person, and design something I wasn't interested in.

As far as reducing articulation...  I'm only in favor, at this point, with a SIGNIFICANT price reduction.  Not $8, not $7...  5 POA is a $5 figure to me, at best.

I don't think every figure needs Super articulation...  Again, I'll cite figures like the OTC Death Star Gunner.  A really perfect figure, top to bottom, for the most part.  He's far from SA though.  Lacking ankle joints, and having simple angle-cut elbows, he's just not SA.  But he works in every way.  He's a figure I love to still pick up.

Likewise his AT-AT Driver counterpart.  Same deal.  I can deal with figures like that for sure.  But as far as I'm concerned Hasbro's regressed the line more than enough.  The paint aps are often a joke at this point, and the accessory count is nowhere near what it used to be.  Some still get a nice treatment, but they're the exception and not the rule now.

I think there's room to drift away from SA, but not without price reductions.  Right now you get a premium price and a fairly premium toy for it (paint aps and frequently impressive accessories aside).  Take away the rest of the "premium" feel and the price not budging?  Sorry, but **** that.

Here's a question, with a statement proceeding it.  "I understand that as toys get more expensive, Hasbro is looking for ways to men less expensive product.  Less articulation, and less accessories seem logical.  But what does Hasbro have in mind to keep the adult collector interested?"

Also,

"It seems that the Clone Wars line is essentially dead, with "real" looking CW sculpts appearing in the main line.  There are so many wonderful designs on the show, are there any plans to do characters other than lead characters?  The Bounty Hunters in that show would make excellent, action oriented figures."

Here is a question for you. Disney just announced Disney Infinity video game. This is basically a figure collecting game like Skylanders but with the world building aspect of Minecraft. Are there any plans to include Star Wars in the Disney Infinities series of action figures?

Rebelscum has some info

No figure reveals until NY Toy Fair.  :(

Movie heroes wave 1 will have light up saber Anakin, sandtrooper, red exploding Battle Droid, Evolutions Jango (what, a good figure?), electronic R2,  action feature Maul, spinning Yoda, light up saber Vader, and  a terrible Obi-Wan. IIRC, we knew about those last year. (No packaged pics)

Anakin to Vader seems to be a 12" figure, which explains the high price point listed. The light up saber's  color depends on if it's Anakin or Vader.

Some licensed products sport new "Vader reaching out"/ROTS package design. They'll mesh with your 2005 stuff.  ;)

RS was a little late to the party on the packaging news, but I digress. JediNews has some definitive info regarding the packaging (http://www.jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=10077) and the the 12" Anakin to Vader (http://www.jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=10076) - complete with high-res shots of the figure and packaging mockup.

Wonder if that Vader/Ani is really just a beefier version of their doomed-to-failure 12" figures surfacing in Canuckia?  Going with what I bet are rotocast figures might be an optimal way to decrease costs and get product on shelves.  3.75" could take a back seat to new 12" ventures?

Believe it or not, it can be a much more cost-effective venture, to go with 12"...  provided they survive a single year of releases since Hasbro's stuff is crap.  12" is shockingly different in terms of manufacture costs, where you have to have them made, and other things.

Anyway, yeah, out of UK Toy Fair, I see absolutely nothing I care about.  Not one thing.  The packaging choice looks sad, the figure isn't in my wheelhouse, and yeah...  oh well.  I'm not unhappy about that.

The Jango, that may just be what's available.  The other figures may just be at a factory that has THAT figure, and that's why they're going that route.  There's all those little variables as to why they chose one direction over another.

So far we seem to have unanimous agreement that the new line look is horrible. What the hell were they thinking? I swear to God they must have a bunch of monkeys running that place.

Pinball machines?!?! Freaking marbles?!?!

Did those guys just wake up from a 30 year coma?

This whole thing reeks of failure and desperation. Stop throwing good money after bad and chasing the next stupid fad...just concentrate on what you (used to) do well - making some damn action figures.

I have no problem with the "fad" stuff.  If Angry Birds or Dagadar bring in a lot of cash for Hasbro then they should have wiggle room for the figures.

I'm not going to complain about product that's geared towards a target market other than collectors.  It's simply not worth the effort.  Most of what we've seen from the UK Toy Fair looks pretty disposable.  The 12" Anakin to Vader?  Meh.  I got the ROTS version of that back in 2005, and it was much better.

I'm still in wait and see mode, because we're not going to see anything for the 3.75" figure system until Toy Fair happens in New York.  Kudos to Jedi News for the coverage, but Hasbro has been very calculated in how they release news & images of the new line for the past several years.

The new artwork reminds me of these figures:

It is very very crappy. Hasbro should have stuck with the Yoda look, and/or LFL should have done artwork more in line with the Yoda and Maul cards featuring either Vader or a ROTS Clone.

With the 3D's kind of in rapid succession, I'd have preferred something a little more iconic and less kiddy looking I guess, but as always card art is about the last thing I usually give two ***** about.  If the figure sucks, it could have card art that could hang in a museum it's so nice, but it'll still be a ****** product.

I saw someone mention the Iron Man 3 figures earlier in this thread (with the lower articulation), and I have to say that our local Target put out a case of the new Ultimate Spider-Man figures (based on the cartoon), and these are that way as well.  I think I read somewhere that the Avengers and Spidey movie lines would be slowly morphing into animated lines in non-movie years and follow their respective cartoons.  The Spidey figures I saw had head, ball shoulder, and regular hip articulation, and that was it.  They were priced at $5.99.

Now, I don't know if this is what we'll see from all Hasbro's lines or not, but like Speedermike mentioned, I wouldn't mind seeing SW do this and have a Vintage (or Vintage-like) collector line limited to 25 figures/year or so.  Hasbro really seems to like having multiple figures lines (although I miss the days of one, or at least one with just "Collection 1 or Collection 2"), and this way they could bring the price down a bit on the "kid targeted" figures.  I'm ok with that.  I really think they are realizing that for the fewer and fewer kids that even care about action figures over video games, they are starting to price those kids/parents out of them at $10 each.  Something has to bring them back into a more normal range.  I don't think that we'll see the quality we've been used to for much less though, perhaps with upcoming movie blitzes?  I know these Spidey figures I saw, while fine for kids toys, are definitely not what most collectors are looking for.

It is funny. I've really come to enjoy the super articulated figures (or at least 10 or so joints), but when I was buying POTF2 or POTJ figures I don't remember being super bummed at the articulation back then either.  I don't necessarily want things to go back to those levels, but it was easier to collect (especially collect on a budget) at $5-6 a figure, with 25-30 figures a year (and maybe 4-5 ships, as exclusives).  Either that, or better utilize their library of "ultimate" versions of the main characters/troops that they already have.  It has to be cheaper to use those, right?  And maybe bring the price down.

Toy Fair should be interesting, in some way or another.  I don't think we'll see much (or at least much that hasn't already been leaked), but it would be nice to get a better idea of the direction retail action figure lines are taking.  I pay attention primarily to Star Wars and Marvel, and it seems like the "collector" portions of those lines are really in flux - with a lot of odd decisions lately.  Our daughter has been pretty into the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle show and toy line, and we've been able to get her those figures for around $7-8 for the most part, with a nice assortment of bad guys/supporting characters, and they'll even have three playsets that are pretty nifty by the end of this year (she got the large Turtle lair set for Christmas from grandparents, and it is pretty nice).  Anyways, we know what can be done - but it will be interesting to see what is done.  It seems like action figures are getting more and more "niche" every year, and more focus being put on movie (or cartoon) lines in a sort of flavor of the year fashion.

According to the Hasbro folks, it is cheaper to tool up an all new figure with 6 different parts than to churn out existing figures with twice that many. That's why the GI JOE Retaliation vehicles had 5 point articulated figures instead of the usual repaint/kitbashed driver figures fans came to expect from that brand.

There's a problem with Star Wars as a cheap line. Spider-Man and Iron Man can be recolored ad naseum, so the same molds can and will be used repeatedly. That's something Star Wars can't get away with too much. Night Strike Luke Skywalker and Jungle Camo Vader seem unlikely to be approved by Lucasfilm.

Yeah, and thankfully that's the case.

All the more reason for them however to utilize good army builder molds more often and add spice it up with head variants, weathering, etc.  They used to be a lot better with that sort of thing than they have been the past couple years.

Man, what a turn around.  Just a few weeks ago, it was sounding like Hasbro might not have anything to show for Star Wars...  but now we'll probably at least get:

- some 5POA Movie Heroes figures for kids
- a wave or two of Vintage Collection er, Black Series 3.75" figures (though they may end up just being pulled from the cancelled Droid Factory figures)
- hard copies of the Black Series 6" figures, with maybe a slideshow peek at Wave 2?

Might not be so bad afterall...

I think the biggest unknown coming out of today is what kind of 4" figure quality and characters can we expect in the years to come.  The short range plan seems to be a small run of 6" and lower quality 4" figures, but will the 4" sculpting, paint jobs and accessories suffer as well?  Is this a test period prior to the movie, or is it already decided that the movie years will also follow this plan?

From spies at German Toy Fair from JediNews UK (http://jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=10216) (I've bolded the most interesting parts):

Quote
The Black Series 3 3/4".  The new Vader art black card style...not vintage...but same size. It is squared off with no die cut fancy shapes.  The bubble takes up nearly all the card and wraps around the edges and taped, similar to the ROTS line back in 2005. Figures on display were Anakin, Padmé and a Clone.  These appear to be the same Ep2 figures that were originally going to be in the Build-A-Droid line.

So, there you go.   I guess that kills speculation that the vintage cards were coming back.

Very disappointed to hear that The Black Series will use the new Vader art and not the retro-vintage cards.  But at least they are still quality 3.75", even if they are just the previously announced BAD figures on a new card.

+1  On the bright side, I was collecting 2x of the Vintage stuff because of the pretty cards.  If they want to release crappy cards, that's my excuse to go back to 1x of each figure and save a bunch of dough!   ;D

Alright!!!  Question for Toy Fair...

When will Hasbro product be available at Disney Stores?

Will the inexpensive 5 POA line cover all films, Clone Wars, EU and other "deep" characters, it will it essentially be just the main players?

Also, I would love it if someone passed on how excellent the twisted paper ties are in the vehicle packaging are, and it's good to see the wire and plastic supports gone.

What is happening with The Clone Wars figures?  Which line will contain those characters?

Why do you hate collectors?

And, if you hate collectors, why?

Also, when will your hatred towards collectors end?

JD.com forums needs a "like" button    ;D

on a side note - my cousin's husband works for a company that sets up displays at convention.  I keep pestering him about SDCC and when he will go there and but he never does go out to that show.  Well, I just found out the other day that he has been going to NYTF for years and I didn't know it (I guess I was too focused on SDCC).  Long story short - I am going to try and go with him next year!

Hmm.  Sounds like a "Monster Blizzard (http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/07/us/northeast-blizzard/)" is coming to the east coast this weekend.

Good luck and safe travels to all the guys heading to NYC for the show this weekend.  Hopefully the weather doesn't cause a cancellation of the fan media event.   :-\

Why do you hate collectors?

Why would you think Hasbro hates collectors?  They're launching a brand new 6" line of figures just for them. :P

The Hasbro investor presentation is scheduled for 8 AM tomorrow morning.  That's scheduled to be streaming on the web.  I don't know if it's a different presentation from the one for the collector media, however.

Given the timing of that particular presentation, things should be okay regarding the weather.

Wondering how this is all going to play out with the backdrop of that huge blizzard and all...

This morning Hasbro had their webcast investor call to discuss 2012 financials and project 2013.

The toy stuff starts tomorrow with the morning being a media session for "big" news outlets (TV/magazines) and then the Hasbro "fan media" event starts at 1pm EST Saturday.  In this day and age of social media, I'm sure the twittering and instagramming will start shortly there after.  Regular Hasbro showfloor picture galleries will start to go up later that night as the folks get back to their hotel rooms after the event.  Other stuff (Mattel, LEGO, Bridge Direct, whatever) would start with the rest of the Toy Fair show, which starts on Sunday.

I'm not sure we'll have a live twitter feed from the event (that's up to Steve and his cell service).  I know Galactic Hunter will be attempting to live-tweet the media presentation and I'll be re-tweeting some of their stuff as it pops up so be sure to follow @jedidefender on twitter!

Q&A with Hasbro Reps

These are not direct quotes taken from the Hasbro representative, but paraphrased, or the general response that I received.

Star Wars

6” figures
-   Who might we find in Wave 2?
Can’t say.

-   How far along are you committed to the 6” figure line, development-wise?
Their priority is to build a foundation and work on getting definitive sculpts of the core characters established in the line first.  They do not plan to do variants or rereleases of figures.  For example:  X-Wing Luke.  They would not reuse his body to make a Biggs or Wedge because they want each figure to be unique.

-   Now that we know who the SDCC 6” figures are, will the Carbonite Han light-up?
*smug grin* I can’t say

3 ¾” figures
Basic Figures
-   Will there be any love for the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi release?
No.  What you see is what you’ll get.

-   Disney just announced Disney Infinity video game. This is basically a figure collecting game like Skylanders but with the world building aspect of Minecraft. Are there any plans to include Star Wars in the Disney Infinities series of action figures?
No knowledge at the present.

-   People love the Target Exclusive 3-packs.  One of the packs that has yet to be done is the Creature Set that includes: Hammerhead, Greedo and Walrusman.  Would Hasbro consider doing the figures in a vintage-decorated style ala Kenner?  They can be done (articulation-wise) like the recent mail-in rocket-firing Fett figure.  The fans would love that.
That’s a great idea.  We’ll look into it.

-   When will Disney stores start selling the Star Wars line?
They do not know Disney’s plans, when or if it’ll happen.

-   Will the inexpensive 5 POA line cover all films, Clone Wars, EU and other "deep" characters, it will it essentially be just the main players?
Yes, Saga Legends will cover all films.

Mission Series
-   What can we from expect these?
They should have the vintage feel as the Kenner figures as they’ll use the same PVC.

The Clone Wars
-   What is happening with The Clone Wars figures?  Which line will contain those characters?
The Clone Wars line has been discontinued, but figures will be available in the Saga Legends line but at a realistic style.

Multi-Packs
-   Are there any new battle-packs are planned for 2013 or is that niche is officially dead?
No

-   Is there any chance we will see a return of the comic packs in the near future?  These seem to be selling well in the Marvel Universe line and there are some great new characters to be made from some of the great Dark Horse material and other sources in recent years.
No comic packs planned for the immediate future, but as they are putting in comics with Transformer figures in August, it could happen.

Other Suggestions
-   Is Hasbro familiar with Medicom's Kubrick line of figures?  These have been fan favorites, but production has died off in the last year or two.  I know it's a long shot, but does Hasbro have any plans to produce something similar or any other new non-standard (3 3/4") lines of figures?
No plans to pursue a mini-figure line since one company is already in that business.

Class I Vehicles
-   Would Hasbro consider updating or adapting any of the Kenner mini-rigs?
Interesting idea, but not in the works.

-   The TRU exclusive Speederbikes were very welcome among fans.  Being that this is Return of the Jedi’s 30th Anniversary, will see any rereleases of this awesome toy?  Perhaps repacked with Endor Luke, Leia, or Paploo?
These were pretty popular and the speederbike is an iconic vehicle.  You’ll likely see these again. (note: no mention of specific figure inclusions)

Playsets
-   It seems Mattel took pre-orders on a 250.00 Castle Greyskull which will only be sold on-line. Would Hasbro ever consider that business model for a Death Star, or other large playset?
-   There still appears to be strong demand for some kind of modular Death Star playset.  Can you tell us if anything like this is on the horizon or even under consideration?
There is always talk at Hasbro of doing something like this, but nothing is in the works at the moment.

-   What do you consider to be the biggest success of 2012?
Star Wars Angry Birds.  Combining a popular app with Star Wars has reached a new audience and is bringing new fans to the toy line.

-   What one figure and vehicle would you personally want to see done (with the disclaimer that it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s in the line-up)? (heads your wishlist)
I would really love to have a to-scale 6” AT-AT.

-   Are there any promotions that you would like to see added to Star Wars products (more accessories, stands, or coins, for example)?
None at the moment

Marvel

-   Has there been any progress with releasing either the orange or green Fin Fang Foom for the Marvel Universe line?  Many collectors still REALLY want to see this big guy and his shorts released.
Not at the moment.

-   For the SDCC Hellicarrier there were pictures of Whirlwind and Goliath on the Artwork, any chance these will be seeing release?  Perhaps in a Walmart Gigantic Battles exclusive set?
It’s possible.

-   On the back of the card art we have seen "Collect them all" type images featuring Sasquatch, MODOK, Dazzler, Deadpool, Norman Osborne and others.  Any chance any of these figures will be seeing a release into the line soon?
You may see one of the above-mentioned soon.

-   For the Iron Man 2 line there was going to be a Target exclusive 3 pack that head both helmet-less versions of Iron Man featuring a RDJ head sculpt and War Machine featuring a Don Cheadle head sculpt - this set never made it to retail.  Recently the War Machine figure has popped up all over ebay and is widely available in the secondary market.  What happened to the RDJ head Iron Man?  Will collectors see a RDJ head Iron man out at retail for Iron Man 3?
-   How about a civillian suit Iron Man?
She wasn’t on the Marvel team during Iron Man 2, so should couldn’t give an answer to the first part of the question.  As for the second part, there is only an unhelmeted Tony Stark in Mirco Muggs.  There will perhaps be an unhelmeted figure to be revealed later.

Kudos
-   I would love it if someone passed on how excellent the twisted paper ties are in the vehicle packaging are, and it's good to see the wire and plastic supports gone.
Thanks!  We love hearing feedback and support!

So what impressed everyone the most at TF 2013?  As far as the SW line goes, for me I'd have to say it was the new 6" line, and the Vintage Collection exclusives.  I think the Amazon Slave I is my most anticipated item of the year at this point, and I'm really looking forward to those Black Series 6" versions of Luke, R2, and the Sandtrooper.  The 3 3/4" stuff looks nice too, just not super exciting since we've known about them for awhile and many of them are figures we've had before.  I am looking forward to the Yavin Luke, new Biggs, more upgraded Scout Troopers, and others though.

Many other lines (GI Joe, the Hobbit, Marvel, LEGO, etc.) had some really impressive stuff on display, while Star Wars seemed a little quieter maybe simply due to all the reshuffling we've seen the past couple months.  Hopefully it will be a good 2nd half of 2013, and things will be back in order for next year (especially if Lucasfilm/Disney doesn't pull any more changes on Hasbro).
