Gotta be Walrusman right?

If you look at the highlighted letters, and the comments on YF.com you'll see some guesses on what we'll get.

TR-BF-PB-ST

Tusken Raider
Boba Fett
Ponda Baba
StormTrooper

Seems like some decent figures, although I'm not so sure about Walrus Man.  Are people really asking for this figure to be reissued?  Maybe he'll have a major role in Rogue One...

I would love it if those are the four characters.  I'm not a huge walrusman guy, but if we eventually get Greedo, Snaggletooth, and Hammerhead to go with him, that would be awesome.  Those cantina guys are some of my favorites from the original vintage lineup.

It absolutely makes sense to get a Stormtrooper back into circulation.  Especially since ROGUE ONE is just chocked full of them.  But the question is invariably WHICH VERSION?

I can also see the case for Ponda Baba since that figure had a very limited run at retail.  As for Boba Fett?  Okay.  When I first saw the BF I actually thought "Bib Fortuna?  REALLY?!?!"  Boba makes more sense though.  He just continues to sell, and you need a solid seller to help carry the line.  I'm curious if it's going to be a TESB version or the ROTJ costume.

But the Tusken Raider?  Eh.  I'm a little less enthused about that one.

Wrong.

Sand Trooper. Hasbro loves them more than stormtroopers.

Also, it's great that Pax Bonkik is coming back.

Ponda Baba was probably THE hardest TVC figure to find. I lucked out and got one from a fresh case at 3am but that was the only time I saw it at retail, and I know they were about as scarce as the recent Black Series waves.

That said, I'd probably pass on all of these. I have enough of the army builders. I'd bite on Fett if it were the VOTC/ROTJ version from 2004.

I have to give  that to the Echo Base Rebel...  THAT was a bitch.

Never saw the Tarkin wave here, one of the only SW Toy Waves i've literally never seen on the pegs anyplace.

I would have preferred they crank out the rest of that last online only TVC wave. Shae Vizsla and that Republic Trooper, etc.

Post by: Nicklab on December 2, 2016, 09:36 AM
I would give the VHTF crown to the trio of Bastila, Ponda Baba and the Echo Base Rebel Trooper.  Thankfully Bastila got reissued down the line and that helped a lot of people.

I think Tarkin would be a good choice for a reissue, too.  Well, just because.  A Sandtrooper reissue makes sense as well, given what we've seen of the Imperial troops on Jedha.

It's funny, but that Ponda Baba, Echo Base Trooper wave was plentiful in NYC I found dozens in the Babies R Us of all places.  If I had know what a treasure trove I had found...

I'm not so sure about Walrus Man.  Are people really asking for this figure to be reissued?

He sells for $30-40 loose on ebay; $80-90 carded.  There must still be some demand for him.

I would give the VHTF crown to the trio of Bastila, Ponda Baba and the Echo Base Rebel Trooper.

From what I understand, this wave was one of the least produced waves in all of the TVC line. Bastilla was re-issued, now apparently Ponda.  Hoping Echo Base Rebel gets re-issued at some point too for those that missed him.

Sand Trooper. Hasbro loves them more than stormtroopers.

Or Snowtrooper.   Actually, I think I'd prefer a nice clean deco black-pauldron Sandtrooper over the plain Stormtrooper.  If we're going to get soaked for $13 to buy them, I'd rather get all the Sandtrooper gear than just a single E-11 accessory. ;)

Post by: Darby on December 2, 2016, 02:58 PM
I lucked out with the Ponda Baba wave here in Iowa, finding them at a few WM's on the same day. I ended up with 3 or 4 Echo Base Troopers. Vintage wasn't great around here but it wasn't bad, and we pretty much had a shot at everything at lease once. I have never seen Shae Vizla though. I think she's the only one I don't have.

I think the choices in this group are pretty good. To me the Tusken Raider is the biggest head scratcher, but I suppose all of this is new to folks coming in to the hobby at this point. I'm hoping the Sandtrooper offers something new. If they go with the same old sculpt it's an instant pass, unless they choose to offer one of the variants from RO. There is an all white pauldron variant in the movie that I think Sideshow might be doing. There are some new backpacks too that the Jedha troops seem to have.

The Black Series plans are now in the main computer:

BLACK SERIES 3.75”
55187082 SW TUSKEN RAIDER
55187083 SW PONDA BABA
55187084 SW BOBA FETT
55187085 SW SAND TROOPER

Ha! Sand Trooper! Called it.

Yeah, I think I got at least one TPM 3D Tusken Raider MOC from when Five Below had that wave. I might even have the VOTC one MOC. So I wouldn't pay $13 or even $10 for one.

Boba Fett needs a whole do-over with ball joint wrists and hips.  This won't be it.

I'll get a bunch of the Sandtroopers!
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Nicklab on December 4, 2016, 08:07 AM
The TVC Sandtrooper (if that's what will be getting reissued) wasn't a terrible figure.  Although the helmet doesn't look quite as sharp as this current 5 POA Stormtrooper that's currently in circulation.

But where are the NEW characters in this line?  It seems like every other wave is reissues.  I've been hoping that we might get some good SA versions of some classic characters.  Is Hasbro holding out for next year with the 40th Anniversary?  You have to wonder.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Matt_Fury on December 4, 2016, 09:21 AM
These re-issue waves favor the patient.  This line rewards people for waiting.  Besides buying a bunch of the 5 POA figures for my 6-year-old, Hasbro has saved me a lot of money over the past few years.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Nicklab on December 4, 2016, 11:23 AM
In some cases, yes.  I agree.  Ahsoka, the Emporer's Royal Guard and Ponda Baba  in this line are good examples of that.  The same goes for the Bastila and Darth Malgus reissues in the general release Black Series line.  Eventually HAsbro

But the Sandtrooper?  I remember that TVC figure being relatively plentiful.  As was the Tusken Raider and Boba Fett.  The ROTJ Han Solo was a head-scratcher, too, because that was a relatively easy figure to get from the VTSC line.  As was the Vader that wound up in this line, too.

Some more relevant reissues would have been some of the TVC figures like Tarkin, the ANH version of Vader, and a Stormtrooper.  But you definitely get the sense that Hasbro wants to focus the release of those characters on more of a mass-market business model.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Matt_Fury on December 4, 2016, 11:57 AM
I'm not saying their perfect (looking at ROTJ Han...also a Vader with swivel elbows)...but I never saw the sandtrooper and still display a couple of those roided up POTF2 sandtroopers in my collection room.  I'd love to get a few to retire those.

I can see Boba Fett in a lot of re-issues because he ALWAYS sells.

Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Nicklab on December 4, 2016, 12:03 PM
Agreed.  I think ANH Han would have been received much better than the ROTJ version.

As for the Sandtrooper?  I'm surprised to hear you didn't see that one at retail.  I saw a healthy number of those on the Lost Line Look cards at the time.  But there's also been just so many versions of the Sandtrooper released over the years.  Off the top of my head there were a couple from POTF2 as well as the  POTJ, OTC, ROTS, TSC and TLC lines.  For some reason Hasbro just LOVES Sandtroopers.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Matt_Fury on December 4, 2016, 01:05 PM
IIRC, the time these were comong out...I was a little more focused on being a dad.  But here in Colorado Springs, the Vintage wave was pretty hit or miss.

Post by: JediJman on December 4, 2016, 01:49 PM
Any chance the Sandtrooper has a removable pauldron?  The 5POA version has one, so we might be getting a Sand/Stormtrooper.  I'd buy up a heap of those.

Hasbro has said that this line was always meant to be repacks, outside of the occasional figures from new movies.

Here are the Walmart links for the newly announced/confirmed Wave 8 -

Tusken Raider   55187082 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/55187082)
Ponda Baba   55187083 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/55187083)
Prototype Boba Fett   55187084 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/55187084)
Sandtrooper (Orange Pauldron) 55187085 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/55187085)

Looks like a solid wave for anyone who missed Ponda or loves army building troopers or Tusken.  Otherwise... meh.  :-\

Post by: Jesse James on February 19, 2017, 12:10 AM
Kind of annoyed the proto Boba got re-released like this when it was a mail-in and all that.  Made it "special" in a weird way.  Now, meh.

Though I suppose they could shock us and make it the TAC figure but yeah I doubt it.

Ponda, I guess was hard to find?  It wasn't for me that I recall but I guess someone had trouble...  Sandtrooper?  Hah.  Sandperson?  Hahahhahaha I got those by the dozen it seemed...  Hell Sandtroopers I got by even more than the dozen as those things were like flyshit for a good while.

I dunno, I can't say I'm into this grouping personally but hey, whatever.  Proto Fett is actually probably the most appealing one in any form I guess.

Would've loved Fleet Troopers, Echo Base Rebels, the Saga Hoth Trooper (any headsculpt)...  I'd have loved a chance to pick those all up in some bulk.

I'm really worried that Scarrif Trooper is going to be basically an impossible figure to get at this point.  NEVER hit a store here, not once.  Have plenty of eyes out there...  That wave never once saw a WM anywhere near Pittsburgh.  That is some bull****.

Oh and second that on the weather...  68 here, and a new record.  I wasn't  wanting to stay home for news I knew would be meh so I took the time to get out and do stuff.  There are some gems popping up in the news though I see here and there.  Hiya Toys unveiled Colonial Marines female troopers and Predators to boot.

Yeah, not overly exciting really. Not terrible choices, but none I'd feel the need to hunt down. It really would be very cheap (and slow) if you stuck to just collecting articulated 3 3/4" figures these days.

Post by: Matt_Fury on February 19, 2017, 12:34 PM
I wouldn't mind a couple of Tuskens and a few sandtroopers.  I might pick up a Ponda Baba since I never saw him at retwil, but do not need the Boba Fett, unless it comes with the MaQuarrie concept helmet.

Jesse, I hope you are wrong about the Scarif Trooper...I've only seen one at retail and hope to get more.

I also have yet to see the Scarif Trooper or Cassian. Not too worried since everything HTF last year has come around again, but then you never know. I have no interest in any of this next group. Good for some folks, but nothing compelling for me.

Still haven't  seen Scarifs as well.  I hope they are repacked with later waves.  I like the offerings in this one, though I think Ponda and maybe even Fett will peg warm.  It's nice that they include some troop builders, but I recall the Hoth Rebel Soldier from that Ponda wave as being much harder to come by, and still has that troop builder appeal.  Also not as happy to see a mail-in figure get a regular release, but good for anyone who missed i=him the first time around.  I'll give this wave a B-.  I like it, but they could have done more.

Decent wave, though I have no need for any of them. I don't have the Proto Fett, but might grab it this time. Hopefully, the case assortment favors the Rogue One figures that I haven't seen yet. I've only seen two Jyns and no one else. Of course, the Phasma wave is just starting to saturate here, so there's that.

Lucasfilm won't even let them make a grey "Death Squad Commander". Might think greedy Disney would loosen the reigns a bit...but no...unless it's a figure with bulky removable armor that never appeared on screen.

I feel your pain, Rob.  I still don't have a single one.  I've cleared out my local store twice and had to call the manager to get them to zero out the inventory.  After weeks of nothing on the pegs, they finally got a new case in....of the Rey/Phasma wave.  Makes me a little sick just thinking about it.  Your $30 is probably worth the stress relief.   :P

Yeah, I figured it's only about $16 more than it would have cost, and if I ever do happen to see more I'd like to buy up to 6 of them, but at least with the one it's not on my list anymore.

I hope future waves won't be so... difficult.

Don't.  I found the Scarif Trooper online.  ONCE.  At 5:30 in the morning.  After checking Walmart.com like a stalker for weeks.  Not a proud moment for me, let me tell you.  The only saving grace is that I HAD to be awake and at work at that time.

And I never saw that figure or Cassian Andor in a store.  I may have been able to find Jyn and the Deathtrooper in stores, but someone seriously dropped the ball on getting this wave out to stores.

I haven't seen Cassian/Shoretrooper either. I figure they will show up eventually, ala the Phasma wave but really it's a chokepoint with these figures. The price drop has helped move some, but seems like some people are seeing more Phasma wave come in behind them.

I have the sneaking feeling that dubious honor will fall upon the reissue wave (Tusken Raider, Sandtrooper, Ponda Baba & Proto Fett) just as we're expecting the first wave of SA figures in this line for THE LAST JEDI.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 8
Post by: Rob on April 3, 2017, 06:54 PM
For the record, I never saw Cassian either.  Jyn was the only one I found in stores.  I bought a lot of 4 Death Troopers on eBay for $75, and I paid $19 shipped for Cassian.

I love that we can still get $13 SA figures on occasion, and I generally hesitate to complain about Hasbro, but the distribution and exclusivity of this line is crap from top to bottom.

Sounds like only the west and southwest saw much of that wave while anything further east didn't see squat.  I know they never got here.  We got a fair amount of the RO wv1 but 2 never surfaced at all.  We got slammed with Phasma wave right at that time and that was all she wrote.  My friend in Seattle tho sent a pic of the endcap of dozens of Cassian tho and that seemed to be a common thing around the west.

It's a real head scratcher on distribution. I felt very lucky to get all the 3.75's because they sold instantly the moment they hit. Same with the 6 inch Scarif. Found him once. BUT, as predicted, I've been seeing Target's 6 inch exclusive everywhere. Why on Earth can Target get an exclusive out there for people to find, but Walmart can't?

Ditto to all that, except I still haven't seen a Scarif in person.   >:(  I'd be curious to know the order/production quantity on these exclusives.  I used to assume that Target was easier for me to find because I live near headquarters where there are 50 stores in driving distance, but it's clear that circumstances are similar in other parts of the country too.  Both the WM Scarif and ShockTrooper 6" figs seemed to come and go in a blink.  Is it Target's superior distribution or do they just order enough product?

I think it has something to do with the individual WM store and department managers. Like, I try to buy car supplies at WM because it's cheaper than AutoZone or stores like that, but it usually ends up being like a toy hunt where I have to hit 3 different stores because the first two either don't carry specific items I need or have an auto section just as bare as the toy section.

Does anyone know the last time Ponda Baba was available on walmart.com? I have seen him up on Saturdays once in the morning at 8 a.m. Central Time and another at around 1pm or 2pm Central Time. Of course he's only there for 15 minutes though.
I swear it's been 2 months or so since I saw any of the websites post that he was actively available.

All of the more recent waves have popped in and out on wm.com.  It's weird.

Did, regarding auto stuff, that's generally a regional thing.  It's why one will have a huge hunting sportsman area another is barely anything.  The auto stuff depends on the area too, generally.  Toys I'm told is a much more generalized thing and thus it's more hit and miss.  Walmart is odd.

It seems like the Scarrif wave never, or barely, made it past the Mississippi because the East got shafted while I know guys in the west who had entire endcaps filled with the wave and wound up with piles of Cassian.  I got Cassian on wm.com but the Trooper I never get a sniff of.  I've never seen a Cassian on pegs, or even repacks to make me think he maybe showed up.

At the same time we got the repacks last year while a lot of folks didn't see the royal guard barely at all.

Yeah people on the coast saw piles of the wave, often with the Scarrif and Death Troopers picked out or only a couple DTs.  I remember the pics coming in and I kept hoping against hope we'd get them in bulk too.

DT wave we got in some quantity but I had to be super proactive on it, or I'd have missed them.  I got quite a few tho.  But the Scarrif I got one on Amazon because it was $18 shipped and I figured that balanced out ok to me.

First figure, ever, I paid more than retail for in modern Star Wars collecting.  A sad day.

Here in Meecheegun, I never saw Cassian or Schoriffe Trooper...er..Scariff trooper.

Only saw Death Trooper once.  Of course, only saw Royal Guard once, too. Scalperz in full effect.

I saw a few Royal Guards at a small, middle of nowhere WM and grabbed some. Never saw Lando or Ackbar. Saw Jyn, Death Troopers, and Ahsoka twice. Cassian once. Scarif Trooper never.

Heck, poor Jesse went out of his way to grab Han/Leia/Phasma for me because they never showed up here, then they show up everywhere for $6 literally two weeks later.
