The Prequel Trilogy / Is that Bib Fortuna in TPM?
« on: December 31, 2003, 02:38 AM »
In the VIP box during the Pod Races, you can see a Twi'lek beside Jabba. Is that Bib Fortuna? His face looks different and he appears to be many many years older than Bib.  ??? Jabba doesn't look anything like ANH (SE) Jabba, and neither one of them look like the ROTJ Jabba.  :-\

Atlanta find…

Appearance -
This isn’t exactly accurate to the photo on the card. Sure it’s cool, but it’s not accurate.
8/10

Articluation -
Standard, same as C3PO and the like.
6/10

Pose-ability -
Well, just like above, this fella's the same as C3PO and the like except that his arms are bent in a tad different way.
5/10

Accessory -
Nothing except a stand.
1/10

Overall -
A sweet figure, but, nothing really outstanding. I actually like this guy, despite the scores here. He should have come with a mini-holo table or something.
7/10

Fan Art / Vader Surveys The Damage
« on: December 13, 2003, 04:40 PM »
I've been learning a lot of techniques here and there on how to do better illustrations and such, and to help me along and keep my sanity through all of this - I decided to learn these techniques by drawing stuff besides the usual trees and posed models and such...
This 'lesson' was mostly about getting rid of outlines and actually drawing the shades...

I decided to draw one of my favorite scenes in Star Wars to practice this lesson. Here you have it, 'Vader Surverys The Damage' as he boards the Tantive... What I like about this scene is its resemblance to this image :

Anywho, note the black cloud as Vader makes his way down the hall... Because I was trying not to do outlines, I wasn't able to detail Vader's mask too much.

Awesome, Wal-Mart delivered the Hoth boys for Christmas.

Appearance -
Well, in the box he looks pretty good, but once you get him out you notice he's in a pretty messed up pose. Seperate parts of him (face, chest plate, arms, holster) look terrific, but the ending result just sort of doesn't score for me. I'm not sure how to rate this, it looks good but it looks like crap at the same time. Accurate to the movies, so, higher score.
8/10

Articulation -
Strange... one ankle, why not another, or even a couple of knees or elbows. Nope. 7 points if I counted correctly.
6/10

Pose-ability -
Nothing you can do really. Sort of an epidemic with these latter Saga figures. Umm... I'll do this -
4/10

Accessory -
Oversized (?) cannon, as well as a rifle and backpack. Just about all you could expect.
9/10

Overall -
Not a bad figure, but not terribly great with the lack of pose-ability. Snowtroopers kick ass, the figure should have too.
6.5/10

Toy Reviews / Wampa Review
« on: December 9, 2003, 10:19 PM »
Wal-Mart gave me an early Christmas!

Appearance -
It looks pretty damn good! The face is a little off, but my wampa looks considerably better than those I've seen online as far as the eyes go. Not quite, but close enough.
8/10

Articluation -
Difficult to grade this. Wampa has head, arms, legs, and what appears to be 3 waists! No wrists or knees, but I don't know if it'd be possible (and still have the appearance rate so well).
9/10

Pose-ability -
There's quite a bit you can do here, I'm very pleased.
9/10

Accessory -
A very well crafted ice chunk, and a not-so-interesting chunk of meat. Again, I'm very pleased!
10/10

Overall -
Worth the $10! Go out and get him. This guy makes up for the 'sigh' Rieekan.
9/10

Something new at Wal-Mart? What the hell!

Appearance -
Perfect. Looks exactly like him. Enough said, really. I can't stress what a good job Hasbro did on the appearance.
9/10

Articluation -
5 points... Head, arms, legs. This is ridiculous. No elbows? Crazy!
1/10

Pose-ability -
With one finger/arm pointing to the side at all times, all he can do is point at the board and point in a random direction.
1/10

Accessory -
Packed with a holo projector, very sweet!
10/10

Overall -
Not worth $10! The failure to articulate this guy beyond the standard was just lazy on Hasbro's part. A damn shame they did so well on his appearance and then crapped out with the articulation. At least we finally have him!

Vintage Kenner / My newest purchase
« on: December 8, 2003, 04:59 PM »
The local comic shop had a 50% off sale, so I decided to take a look at what they had... Well in the (small) Vintage SW section they had a single carded figure, Logray, for $40. It's in pretty crappy condition (the bubble is stained and the card is torn where the price tag was), but for $20 I figured I would get it for myself for an early Christmas present.

So I'm sure I could have gotten a better deal, but I got it.  :-[ :-\ :-X

Fan Art / Chris Berry's Christmas Present
« on: December 5, 2003, 04:39 PM »
Since I'm low on cash for Christmas, I decided to go cheap and draw something for Berry as opposed to buying him something. He should be getting this in the mail pretty soon (this weekend I suppose)... It's not the best I've done but it's certainly not the worst, either.

From CBS Oct. 16th
For a Hollywood A-list actress who was recently devastated by the death of her mentor-father, Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have made an odd therapeutic choice in her latest film.

It's the story of Sylvia Plath, the American writer whose stormy marriage to British poet Ted Hughes ended in her suicide. It's been called the most tragic literary love story of the past century. But, it is not a movie you would expect a grief-stricken actress to be drawn to.

"Actually, it turned out to be the right thing to do at the time because as I was suffering so much in my personal life and [Plath] was suffering so much," Paltrow explains. "There was an incredible overlap of feeling and I think I had access to her in ways that I wouldn't have had."

The romance wasn't all suffering, at least not in the early stages when Plath, as an American Fulbright scholar in 1950s Britain, met Hughes. But the suffering — real or imagined — and death is what Plath is all about in the end.

Paltrow says Plath's suffering helped her understand the emotional pain she was experiencing after losing her father, television creator Bruce Paltrow.

The actress had signed onto the film before her father died and decided to honor her obligation. She had some family help in the making of the movie. Her mother, Blythe Danner, plays her mother.

"It was so nice being with her and having her around it was just very comforting," Paltrow says.

But the movie may not be comforting for fans of Plath. Her account of her life in her best-seller, "The Bell Jar," and her suicide at just 30 years old, blamed by many on the philandering of her husband, led to her becoming a poster woman for feminism. But anyone looking for a good girls-bad guys approach in "Sylvia" will be disappointed.

"[In the movie], no one is vilified, no one is held up as the monster and the victim because that's not how it works in life," Paltrow says. "I don't think she is blameless in the scenario."

Sylvia may or may not turn out to have broad commercial appeal, but being back in cinematic focus inevitably puts Paltrow back in gossip column, too.

"I really made an effort to go underground and not to go to any events and really kind of drop out," she says. "But, unfortunately, our culture is totally celebrity obsessed, which is too bad because it is such a waste of time."

Paltrow, who has had well documented relationships in the past, seems to be in the middle of another one. She is reportedly linked with Coldplay's front man Chris Martin. But, she won't let her love life read like an open book.

Vintage Kenner / Help... Estimated cost for these three?
« on: December 1, 2003, 02:12 PM »
After Christmas I'm going to (very slowly :P) start picking up figures missing from my collection, I think the first one I want to pick up is Yak Face, followed by the Imperial Dignitary and Amanaman. I searched through eBay to try to get an estimate of how much each is running and I was hoping you guys could confirm my estimation on Yak Face and Amanaman, and offer your own estimation on the Imperial Dignitary since I couldn't find one on eBay.

Yak Face (loose w/o acces.) - $25-35
Amanaman (loose w/o acces.) - $15-25
Imperial Dignitary (loose w/o acces.) - ???

Star Wars Dioramas and Displays / AE's Jabba's Dias Custom
« on: November 29, 2003, 10:44 PM »
I completed work on this April 14th of 2002, and just now realized I hadn't posted the thread here at JediDefender.

The construction was pretty simple - used a bit of wood and constructed a box and sprayed with with textured trunk spray, added weathering with some model paint I had used on a HE-111 model shortly before... Found some leather sheeting and took a piece, tried to cut out a decent shape, and there you have it...

Eventually I found a nice pen-top that looks pretty close to Jabba's bubbler deal, and painted that brown.

The last little addition I made to the dias is a non-attatched grating that is supposed to look like the floor of the palace. It doesn't work well, but I like it.

The dias is lacking the head-pieces, among other smaller details, but I think the end result was fairly nice. It certainly adds a lot of flavor to my dio.

Vintage Kenner / Difference between ROTJ/Droids Boba Fett?
« on: November 29, 2003, 09:54 PM »
Hey guys... I was checking out my collection when I remembered an old question I had been meaning to ask regarding the vintage Fett.

I've got a loose Fett w/ blaster but I wasn't sure which card he came with (ESB/ROTJ or Droids). Is there a variation to tell them apart or are they all the same?

Finally the Target employee left some for the customers...

Appearance -
From what I remember, this is fairly accurate. Nothing all that interesting as far as his wardrobe, but, its accurate.
9/10

Articluation -
8 points. Not bad. Lacking elbow articulation, which kills the pose-ability score.
6/10

Pose-ability -
Nothing you can do really. Straight arm pointing and a bend arm to the side... (shrug).
1/10

Accessory -
Packed with a holo projector with Obi-Wan at a ready pose w/ lightsaber. Very cool pack in.
10/10

Overall -
Not a bad figure, but not terribly great with the lack of pose-ability.

Toy Reviews / Elan Sleezebaggo Review
« on: November 21, 2003, 03:18 PM »
Appearance -
Looks pretty sweet. I like this a lot. Could have used more detail on his outfit but it's nice.
9/10

Articluation -
7 points... no wrists and only one elbow... No knees... Pitiful, but passable.
7/10

Pose-ability -
Seems decent enough, working holster gets bonus points.
8/10

Accessory -
Bar piece, drink, tube stuff, and a blaster. Nice. Bonus points for the blaster being sturdy and not a piece of flimsy ****.
10/10

Overall -
I'm very happy with this purchase.
