Title: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: JesseVader08 on July 13, 2005, 10:50 PM
Great news for all of you that miss the 12" line from Hasbro... Sideshow Collectibles is bringing a new 12" line of figures about mid 2006. More details are expected at Comic-Con, but you can read Sideshow's press release here (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=071205starwarspr).

Holy @%R  I can not believe it!  Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!  I just wonder what they will make and how much they will be.  But that's great news.

So is the 12" line going to reboot or is Sideshow going to pick up where Hasbro left off? There's still plenty of possibilities without re-making a lot of the 12" figures already out there.

From reading the release it looks like Sideshow Toys is indeed partnering with Hasbro in order to make the 12" line - so I wonder if Hasbro is going to be reselling the figures designed and manufactured by Sideshow toys or (and I'm praying to god here that it comes true) are we going to just be able to order our 12" SW figures directly from Sideshow's website? Please oh please let that be a possibility!

This is HUGE news.

If you guys know SS's 12" figures, they're fantastic.  They compete with the likes of BBI, and the infamous Dragon figures.  So 12" Star Wars figures in that vein will be fantastic.  They'll even make the Marmit figures look weak I think...  More like model kits than figures.

They had a great World War I line I think...  And a Civil War line.  Outstanding sculpts and realism.

This almost makes me wanna get back into 12" but I'd still dump the majority of my Hasbro stuff.  Taking on a new (old) scale though...  Ugh.  :-\

I haven't  bought 12 inch figures in a long time, but I will now that Sideshow is doing them.  I'm hoping they're in the 40.00 range  like other Sideshow stuff.  The cool thing is that Sideshow is very creative with accesories.  Their Planet of the Apes  figures come with the little human doll from the dig!

This is the best news yet from Comic-Con.

And what makes it even cooler is the fact that Hasbro is partnering with them - what that means exactly, I don't know, but I'm sure it's to SS's advantage in regards to pricing and royalty payments.

And it's a plus for us - it sounds like we'll be able to find these at mass retailers come next year.  Retailers will be more likely to carry a SW figure line with Hasbro's name on it.

Now I don't feel obligated to order the Medicom $200 Vader!!   ;D

I don't know if it's a good thing having Hasbro partner with them.  Hasbro has made some terrible figure choices lately in this scale.  I don't think anyone really wants to see another Tatooine Luke for awhile.  Granted whatever Sideshow does will be better but still.

There is hope for my 12 inch Hammerhead yet!  Please oh please!

I've never really been a 12" figure collector either (only have 4-5 or so), but this does seem like great news for the line.  And, with what Hasbro is doing with their 3 3/4" line right now, it might be worth a look.  I hope this turns out great though for all you 12" collectors.

To be honest, I can't see Sideshow starting out of the gate with a Tatooine Luke.

While there may be a Darth Vader, Stormtrooper and either a Boba or Jango Fett - just coming out with nice versions of 12" ROTS Anakin and Obi-Wan would be welcome IMHO.
Title: Re: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: speedermike on July 14, 2005, 03:26 PM
In their press material, Sideshow talks of "continuing" Hasbro's line.  Maybe an E3 Kenobi and Anikin will be a good place to start, since Hasbro didn't  do them as  individual figures.

I think that they'll have to do some OT at the start too.  My outside guess would be a Bespin Luke and Boba Fett.  Sideshow plays to the fans, and the fans love ESB.

Here's the skinny so far on what details could be surmised outta the Sideshow reps down at SDCC (courtesy of Jared):

Sublicensed from Hasbro, but their relationship is directly with Lucasfilm Licensing with the line.

Targeting $50.00 price point. There will be fluctuation based on COGs

Emphasis on accessories and accurate tooling. Leather belts, metal saber hilts, etc.

Same level of pattern work and stitching on the clothing as the 1/4 scale statues.

Many of the same folks working on the 1/4 scale will also be on 12"

Packaging will be "book-like." It will be a fold-out two piece design, meant to be as collectible as the figure inside.

A balance of OT and PT. EU is also being considered.

Mid-2006 release. No specific figures announced yet.

$50, eh?  That's getting into a pricey range.  I'm sure Sideshow can produce the products that will warrant the price, but it will likely cause a lot of collectors to be fairly selective on what they buy.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who only owns one 12" figure, so that it with a grain of salt.   ;)

This is great news.  I am thrilled the 12" line is continuing and really hope for a decent Padme in all of this.  I 'm betting the first one will be ROTS Obi-Wan.

This is awesome news!  I've admired Sideshow's quality in their recent 1/4 scale figures, and it looks like we'll get some great figures with close to medicom/marmit quality with a pricepoint that's closer to Hasbro's!

I'm glad we're not in April.

Not Star Wars, but it gives you an idea of the kinda quality SS puts out in its 1:6 lines.  The likenesses of historical characters I've seen are striking.  Currently they have a G.A. Custer figure up that, if you've seen photographs of him, is 100% spot-on accurate.

They cater to the collectors...  Short of Hasbro stepping on toes, I don't see how this could be anything but a blessing to 12" collectors.  Well, besides price...  They seem to be aiming for a price higher (I'd say most likely due to licensing) than their other 1:6 product.

(BTW,  I thought this was sorta hysterical really...  Sideshow reviews their own toys on their site...  Obviously they're not the most impartial reviews to read.  :D )

I preorderd the Medicom Stormtrooper and now have been wondering if that was a good move.  If Sideshow puts out this kind of work (and only for $50), I can't see Medicom being in great demand for collectors of the 12" line.  Fifty bucks might seem like a lot but I'm shelling out $200.00 for Luke just because I love the different poses that I will be able to create.

50.00 is higher than i was expecting. I am looking forward to this line, and want to buy them, but i am not sure if i can afford it. I dont even want to imagine all the exclusives they are going to have.

Realistically, 50.00 is fine.  In NYC, the Sideshow figures (Planet of the Apes, Outer Limits, X-Files) all seem to got for about $40-45.  I would expect that SW would be a bit more expensive.  It's always seems to be the case.

I'm getting mixed emotions from this news. While I do collect some Sideshow 12" (Buffy, X-Files) and they do an excellent job on most figures, there are a few they dropped the bomb on. Plus I don't like the way they do eyes. They're always pink like they've spent the night drinking or they all have a bad case of Conjunctivitis. Plus the increase in price added to the fact that for Buffy 12" they have a lot of Con exclusives and I wouldn't be surprised if they did that with the Star Wars.

I have the Buffy 12" they did last year and paid $45 and was pretty impressed with it.

To spend $5 more and get a beautifully-crafted Star Wars character is great. I just really hope they don't do the con exclusives that have been in the Buffy line. If they can avoid that, great. I'd find the money to get these if they release one every few months.

While I'm generally of the mindset that I'd rather pay a little more for a higher quality item, $50.00 pricepoint probably means the end of my 12" collecting.

My strategy for 12" has generally been to buy them on clearance, or loose at toy-shows for $10.00 or less a piece.

If I'm going to spend $50.00 on a single item, I'd much rather be finishing my vintage (loose) collection or buying Gentle Giant mini-busts.

If they picked the right figures, I'd actually consider picking these up...  price hike and all.

If Kyle Katarn got a 12" figure though, forget it...  I'm there.  He's only the best EU character EVER to come down the pike...  I can imagine them decking him out with the shitloads of gear he uses in the games too.  Oh man...   Maybe even multiple heads for the various stages of his "aging".  Like NJO era with grey streaks and beard, the classic trilogy era with no grey and stubble beard, etc...  Sweet.

And the gear...  IM Mines, Thermal Detonator Bandoleir, Imperial Railgun with explosive projectiles, Imperial Repeater Rifle, Imperial E-11, Bryar "pistol" Sawed Off Blaster Rifle, Fusion Cutter...  And his harness/PDSU, and of course a nice kick-ass Qu-Rahn Lightsaber...  Oh yeah, and his headset w/IR Goggles, head lamp, etc.

Katarn could be the ultimate SW figure.

12 EU Quinlan Vos.

I'd buy 2.

Think, they could make him in his war/street gear, include Jedi Robes, and a Sith Cloak. His Blaster, Saber, Thermal Detonators, and Holocron would all be included as well.

I want it now.

From StarWars.com (http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/misc/news20050811.html):

Quote

Sideshow intends to lend some added distinction to the line by giving each figure a 30-point articulated body, hand-sculpted portrait features, well-tailored outfits, and detailed accessories. "Some of these characters will have real leather belts and holsters, metal buckles, little pouches that you can store little bits of Jedi equipment in, and all kinds of crazy details! I think some of our sculptor/fabricators lost their sight due to squinting to get the details so small and accurate."

Because of the figures' high-end treatment, fans can expect to pay a bit more for the Sideshow editions, but only a fraction of what they'd expect to pay for similar pieces in this class. While Sideshow's Premium Format series will typically run between $250 - $450 depending on a figure's complexity, the new 12" figures should cost around $40 - $55, with the possibility of deluxe figures in the future costing slightly more.

I hear a lot of complaining from people about Sideshow getting this deal actually...   Nobody whose opinion I respect, but there's some bitchin' going down about the price increase.

People are funny...  It's like they want the 12" line to be the under-detailed, over-priced (for the ****** detail) line that Hasbro ran...  They don't wanna pay up for the increase in quality.

I may not buy them all but I'm definitely taking a look BACK at the Sideshow 12" figures when I've written off Hasbro's lackluster line.  Count me in.

Since I've had to pack up everything I own to move, I've had a lot of time to decide what I want to keep and what I can live without.  I know I've bitched and moaned about several of Hasbro's 12" dolls, and they deserved it, but for the most part they were pretty well done.  This is a line I will never be able to part with.

In the beginnig they rang up for $14.99 to $19.99 (varied on the store) and jumped up to $24.99 to $29.99 the last year or two.  These were just basic dolls, no special editions or two-packs or anything of that nature.  As Hasbro got better with articluation, they tried to add more of it to this line.  Examples are the VOTC line and Leia w/speederbike.  They also tried (but didn't always succeed) in getting the face sculpts better.  They did a helluva job on any alien or droid and had at least one or two good "core" characters (they really did a bang up job on the portrait Amidala series).

I was really disappointed to learn that Hasbro was going to stop making the line and thrilled to find out that Sideshow took over.  I don't care if it costs me $50.00-$100.00 bucks for one doll.  If they can pack in articulation and all kinds of soft goods and goodies, it'll be worth it.  I still plan on customizing (the one nice thing about the Hasbro line is that there are ALWAYS clearance bins somewhere!!) and if Sideshow does pack in alot of goodies, I can swap some of it out with stuff I am missing.

All in all, IMHO, it's the greatest thing that could have happened to the line and I look forward to their first announcement of which doll will have my dining room table spot  ;).

Yep, that's what I figured as well.  The figs were allready going for $25 at the end anyway.  Granted if you waited for clearence on some you could get them cheaper.  Or I could not find several like Yoda, Ewoks w pack, Biker Scout that end up being $30 a least.

Anyway, like Jadesfire said it's the best thing that could happen to the 12 inch line at this point in time.
Title: Re: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: JediMAC on August 18, 2005, 03:58 AM
So are you Sideshow collectors going to be completists with their 12" line, or just pick and choose what you like?  I think they told us at Comic Con that they'd be releasing them maybe two or three at a time, at the most, and that they'd space them out a bit, keeping things a little easier on the wallet despite the increased prices.

Hasbro's 12" line is one of the very few sublines that I didn't collect.  I nabbed the first 10 or 12 of them, but then when the exclusives started going insane (Biggs/Wedge, Han/Luke Stormies, Sandtrooper, etc), I got annoyed and through in the towel right quick.  Never much liked how they looked though, so no big loss.

This Sideshow stuff will be amazing though, I'm sure.  But I think I'll be refraining, since 12" dolls just ain't really my thing (I like stuff more "miniature" in my collectibles"), and they just take up too much valuable display space.  Great stuff though, and considering how well Sideshow understands the Star Wars universe, and it's license, I'm sure they're gonna kick all kinds of ass with this line, and I'll likely be one jealous bastard when Beth puts up some pix with the first several of them displayed altogether...  ;)
Title: Re: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: DoctorPadawan on August 18, 2005, 05:00 PM
I've thankfully never been a 12 inch completist, mostly because the quality was never high enough for me to track down figures I had no interest in (Ponda Baba?  WHERE DO I SIGN?).  Even now that Sideshow has the license, I probably won't go completist on them, but if they put out an ultimate Boba Fett or Grievous or a Clone Commander, I'll be more than happy to pay 50 dollars for one.

(where is a photo of Pip from South Park when I need it?)

I'm actually wondering how long it will take Hasbro to regret letting go of the 12" license when Sideshow surpasses every figure Hasbro ever did with the first one released, whoever it may end up being.  I get the impression that Hasbro allowed them to have the license because the Lords of Pawtucket saw it as a dead area of SW collecting, so if/when the Sideshow line succeeds, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Ivory Tower of Rhode Island.  ;D

Oh, and Beth, could you PM me?  I wanted to ask you a question about the Padme stuff you mentioned in another thread.
Title: Re: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: Darth Broem on August 19, 2005, 09:23 PM
I will be picking and choosing for the most part.  I have to anyway anymore with all the lines.  Plus at $50 a pop it will make it that much more of a necessity.  I will most likely go for something that either blows away whatever Hasbro did or something never done before like say Mara Jade or Hammerhead (please!).  But I am hoping they do a kickass Luke Jedi Knight from ROTJ.  Oh watch me get them all.  LOL!
Title: Re: Sideshow Gets 12" Figure License!
Post by: Brian on August 22, 2005, 02:46 PM
I've never really been much of a 12" collector, probably having 5 or 6 figures total from the Hasbro line.  I guess the quality overall didn't seem that great sometimes, and plus, I just didn't have the money or space for a bunch of them.  Also, I've always been more of a 3 3/4" person anyways.  That said, Sideshow getting the license could really make this line amazing.  Like Matt mentioned earlier, they seem to "get" the Star Wars license, and I'm anxious to see what the figures will be like.  I still don't know if I'll collect, but if they come out with an amazing Han and/or Chewie, that might make me bite.  It will probably be downhill from there, at least with some of the OT characters ;).  We'll have to see what they look like though, or if they will even go back and "re-do" figures Hasbro has done, with all the press releases praising "building on Hasbro's great line" or something like that.  Anyways, I'm anxious to get our first looks at the initial figure(s).  Nice to have this EU poll right off the bat too, Hasbro should just do the same type of thing for the fans.  We're about due for another Fan's Choice poll.

Not knowing alot about SS other than what I was able to glean here I have to say that this news concerning 12" figures is fantastic. For far too long I've been wanting a good 12" figure but had to settle with Star Wars Barbies and Ken's if I wanted anything. Needless to say the small assortment of 12" items I do have consists mainly of Droids and aliens. I couldn't even bring myself to buy any of the Stromtroopers... what a shame.

Hasbro's 12" outings were way over priced as far as I'm concerned, again, considering they were nothing more than glorified Barbie dolls. That being said, the thought of paying $40-$60 for high-end collectible 12" action figure that bears striking resemblences to the actual characters, with proper proportions, as well as having tons of articulation (posability) and accesories gives me wood!

Bring on the likes of E3 Anakin, Obi, Commander Cody and Grevious! Grevious. Can you imagine a SS version of Grevious? Wow! Oh my God, Clones! Imagine the Clone and Stormy potential! I may faint. ;D

Sideshow Collectibles (http://sideshow.directtrack.com/z/12943/CD996) has just announced that they will be the exclusive North American distributor of Medicom's Real Action Heroes 12 inch figures.  They are planning to sell them between $100 and $150.  So far, they are only carrying a couple of the Evangelion and Sex Pistols figures, but it will be interesting to see if they carry upcoming Star Wars figures as well, considering Sideshow just entered a contract with Hasbro to produce their 12 inch Star Wars figures.  You can read all the details here (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=112505medicom&source=112505news).

Since this is the General Sideshow thread, though I'd post this here.

A few nuggets have come out of Sideshow post- Toy Fair...

They are planning TEN 12" figures for this year:
1.  Luke (Jedi)
2.  Anakin (Ep3)
3.  Obi-Wan (Ep3)
4.  Kit Fisto
5.  Han Solo (Bespin)
6.  Mace Windu
7.  ?
8.  ?
9.  ?
10.  ?

There are five main categories for the figures:
- Order of the Jedi
- Heroes of the Rebellion
- Lords of the Sith
- Military
- Scum and Villainy

Not much new, but it's nice to see a target number for the year to help folks out with their budgets and such.

Anyone want to speculate on who you think will be next?  My money is on the Sith...   ;)

As much as I'd love to see a figure with a unique body mold (stormtrooper, aliens, etc.), I'm sure the current trend will continue of simple head swaps.

I think Darth Maul and Palpy are coming soon along with Leia of some sort.

It is nice to see some more info and just to have a little better idea of how many figures per year they are planning on, at least for this year.  Its probably good they capped it at 10, that is spendy enough for those who are getting them all at around $500 or so.  I've only preordered the Han so far, and thought seriously about the Luke at the time, but I'm going to wait and see from here on out.  I can't afford too many, so I'll probably just be considering the OT characters and see from there.  As for the next figure, I agree with those who have speculated Darth Maul.  I don't know why, but he just seems like a pretty likely choice.  I'm hoping we see another OT character or two stuck in there by year's end though.  I'm guessing the majority of what we'll see is human(oid) characters this year though, and from what Sideshow has said in the past, someone like Chewbacca is pretty far off at this point.  I can't imagine what the ordering will be like if/when we see Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, or Boba Fett put up for sale.  Yikes.

From the JD front page:

Sideshow has also informed us that next week's Newsletter will give the name of the next 12 inch figure:

"Placing bets on who will be the next Star Wars 12-inch figure? If so, you don't have long to wait to find out if your bet is correct! Pay close attention to the Newsletter next week to be the first Star Wars fans to feast your eyes on a Preview of the next character in the 12-inch line. Will it be Leia? Or maybe Lando? Qui-Gon? Fan favorite Aayla Secura?? Or perhaps we will pull a trick out of the bag and start the Sith line off with a bang - after all, surprises are our specialty! Tune in next week to find out!"

Any predictions as to who the next fig will be?  I think it will be a Sith, seeing as SSC at Toyfair has said to "Keep your eyes and ears at the ready…".

The last line seems to allude to Dooku, but he has never had sith eyes?, and what about Vaderkin?  I wonder if the next fig will be the SDCC Exclusive, or maybe we might see at least two Sith by July?

I'd love to see them do Qui-Gon or the Emperor next.  I'm not sure that they would do Vader or Maul yet since they have the statue and bust respectively for each right now.

Boba Fett would be sweet too.  With rocket-firing backpack.  8)

I'll go with Darth Maul though I was really hoping for Princess Leia.  I was also wondering whatever happened to EU Padme?  Is that for 2007??

That's a darn good question.  She certainly doesn't fit any of the categories that Jeff listed above.  I was actually hoping we'd see her at Comic-Con.
