Title: Recent purchases
Post by: Darth_Anton on June 18, 2013, 01:58 PM
I just pre-ordered the Biggs, Luke, Padme and Vader from TRU.com. BOGO 1/2 off.

I thought about it, but last time something like this went on there were cancellations and you had to fight them...  I am not even going to try I think.

I'm going to pre-order 1000 Padme's in order to create artificial shortages.  >:D

Or nothing at all.

It's not Black Series, but I couldn't resist this bargain I found at Walgreens today:

Well that beats the price of the General Rieekan ($13.99) IS still at my local RiteAid.

Anyway, finally found the black series at Walmart. I picked up Padme and Biggs. They had the entire wave.

First half my TRU order arrived today. Vader, Biggs, Padme and Luke. Yeah, about the bubbles, Biggs came detached from his card.

Weird my Biggs and Padme were fine.

I found about a set and a half at a Walmart and 50% of the figs were bad cards and rest were at least ok or perfect...  A near complete set at a Kmart were all perfect except 2 that seemed stolen not accidental...  I'd say its possible this card issue is a factory error could work itself out...  Like he green helmets I believe were a demolding agent issue at the factory.

By the way, my TBS 3.75" find was in a smaller Walmart where they had the TBS absent on planograms...  Meaning it seems that, at least some cases anyway, some of that WM planogram panic was unfounded or a little premature.

Not when it comes to the 6" line, it wasn't. They whiffed badly on that one. That's a valid complaint, IMO.

6" it seems they're wait and see...  Tough to blame them since at TRU target and wm I'm now seeing some of the same guys routinely...  Still early tho, but once things hit $20 I don't blame any retailer for taking a step back.

I've only picked up the 6" inch Sandie (yeah, wrong thread).  I've passed on the 3.75" stuff for now.  I'm only tempted by Padme - maybe - and I've yet to see her.  Once I see her and have her in hand, I'll decided.  Otherwise, it's mostly pass for me on this wave.
Title: Re: Recent purchases

It's honestly a decent group...  I like Biggs and plan to buy several for customizing average height X-Wingers, finally...  His headsculpt swaps with the TIE Pilot Biggs, for those not digging it.  I think it's passable though.

I like the green Clone well enough...  Scout, blah.  Vader's KINDA neat but I've not bought  yet.  Padme and Luke are the highlights IMO and the hardest to find...  Luke's a needed update in skin tone to that 2007 figure, plus he has the correct blaster...  I like teh colors overall on this update though, not just the skin color.

It's a better wave than it's getting credit for but far from a wave of "Wow!" to most...  Nice updates though.  Nicer than I think people are saying around the web.  This first wave, and all first waves really, needed a Cantina dude and a new droid, even if it were merely a repaint.  A CW decoed BAD sculpt astromech?  I'd take it.  And any Cantina person, even re-using some bits, would've been welcomed.

I finally saw some of these at Target today so I picked up a Clone Pilot  and Biggs.  Boy these things are going to be difficult for carded collectors.  I saw a couple of figures with the card back half off on the pegs and the Biggs came off the card at the register!

Also, the helet will be staying on the clone pilot...without it, he looks like Jango's retard cousin!

Was out yesterday and bought Padme, so I've seen them all on the pegs.  Was tempted to get Luke due to Jesse's promotion of him, but since I already own the old version, that ruled me over.  I found these at a Target that had only a TVC Battle Droid on the pegs for the longest time, so I was surprised to see a fresh case on the pegs.  At TRU, I finally got to experience the bubble coming off the card on 3 figures.

Tellin ya Luke is beyond a worthy pick up.  Biggs I think is a must get too but I think the heads paint leaves a lot to be desired.  I'm seeing Padme more if you need one.

Not sure where to put this, so I'll stick it here - I've started hearing reports from quite a few folks (including the locals here in MN) that Target is doing it's annual Post-Christmas "price exploring".

So far we've seen reports of:
- Saga Legends as low as $5.69 and as high as $7.59, depending on the store
- Mission Series as low as $8.99 and as high as $10.99, depending on the store
- 3.75" Black Series completely clearanced out at some stores or price-hiked to $10.99 at others
- 6" Black Series as low at $18.99 or as high as $21.89 at some stores.

Target is usually pretty consistent from store-to-store, except when they go on these Spring price exploring adventures.  It always seems to normalize itself by summer resets though...

Jeff, do you see a connection with the higher pricing being in more affluent areas?
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Jeff on February 20, 2014, 01:08 PM
Not really.  Typically when Target does this type of thing here in MN, they choose stores across the state that have similar traffic/sales numbers to try to normalize the data they are collecting.

Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: CHEWIE on February 20, 2014, 01:40 PM
Ah, ok - thanks.

I think I've seen this a time or two in the past (I believe back in 2010 because I remember seeing armies of TVC 4-LOM and Dengar for $9.99 at some Target stores, $10.99 at others - or something like that), but not to this detail.  I was never able to see any real correlation with which stores had higher pricing than others.

I saw the saga legends 5 poa figures at the gift shop outside Star Tours for $10.95 today! So yeah, there are some pretty wild fluctuations out there.

The Targets around here (Columbus, OH) are pretty consistent except for the store near OSU (Lennox), where figures are a dollar more all year.

Hopefully Wave 2 gets skipped... If not, Waves 3 and later might not really get distributed until Fall at this rate.

Wave 2 hit here in fairly solid numbers at K-mart actually and wound up selling out everywhere it hit.  I was a little surprised.  Wave 3 is hitting at a trickle, but it's hitting.  All I see hanging around KM now is an Anakin and an R2-D2 which I may pick up for in a Jedi Fighter or something.

Jeff, do you see a connection with the higher pricing being in more affluent areas?

I too am in the Minneapolis crew with Jess. I do see a trend of higher prices in more affluent areas. Our western metro suburbs have targets, with noticeably higher prices across the board. There might be a higher priced suburb in town were this does not follow suit, but I have seen plenty of evidence of differing prices in correlation with higher property values.

I just looked at the wave 2 case assortment- yeah, it's nice it was skipped here. This area managed to burn off the Biggses and Anakins (mostly), so we didn't need any more.

Finally scored Darth Plagueis, Vizam and Mace Windu thanks to a store visit.  Not overly enthused that it was the Disney store and they're charging $10.95 per figure, but it's much more preferable to places like Walgreens at $12.95 per figure, or the ridiculous prices that are being charged online for a figure like Plagueis.

Got Vizam, Merumeru and Plagueis at a local grocery store. They put out a fresh case of Wave 3 so I snagged the ones I wanted most. I had planned on ordering a case but decided some figures I didn't want at all (Troopers) and others just didn't look as great in person (Mace Windu).

Loaded up on K-Mart Value 2-Packs tonight.  Cleared the store out.  It won't be my only one to do so either.  ;D  They did have the Jedi Speeder thingiemahickey too.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Jesse James on September 17, 2014, 08:38 PM
I hate to post it in the SotDS area, since these are new scores, but I found more of the Value-Pack Vehicle sets at my more local K-Mart tonight.  Two cases worth to be exact.  I also got to see the cases fresh to see how these are coming, and it's really random.  One case had two of the same set, while another case had 3 completely different sets.

All sets share the same UPC too, so individual searching for specific ships is pretty much not gonna happen.

I'd also point out that last night's K-Mart had two sets that tonight's K-Mart didn't have at all, and both cases from last night's find were packed with 3 unique sets.  It's a crap shoot is the point.

Likewise I just got a report from a friend at an Ollie's outlet...  I hate to even mention Ollies because they're such a local thing, it's pointless to say much about it.  HOwever they have these stacked higher than an average man stands, so yeah...  They're getting a ****load more at the slightly higher $19.99 pricepoint to K-Mart's $14.99.  They've also got the AT-AP/Swamp Speeder set, and Mando Transport/Ani Fighter set which I've yet to see at a K-Mart.

Yet again given the randomness of the cases, I imagine it's quite likely you'd find those two sets at a K-Mart on any given trip just because.

IF (and it's a huge if, because you probably don't) you have an Ollie's, I'd go now.  K-Mart too, but Ollie's has stuff just in huge piles.  K-Mart I assume is only shipping a couple cases at a time to any given store.  Ollie's is a disaster (think Big Lots, but far worse) so they can dump 'em all out and it would only improve the aisle.

Speaking of Ollie's, don't be too jealous of me for reporting this.  I have 3, and they're all an hour away and I've yet to go to one because they're an hour away.  They're great if you have one near by and you KNOW something's hitting there (like this), but at an hour from me and all out in the middle of nowhere (further than I already am) 3 different directions, I can't really get to them easily at this point.

It's a cool dealio, but K-Mart is my jam on this one.

I'm just jealous you are finding these at K-Marts at all. I spent my whole day off driving around to all the BFE K-Marts around here and none of them had ANY of these. Are they stocking them in the SW aisle, clearance aisle, or some other random location near the toy section?

Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Jesse James on September 18, 2014, 02:17 PM
They don't have a spot on the floor, so they're going wherever, or back to the back of the store I'd assume.  I'm going to hit up a couple more KM's this weekend if I manage the time.  I've actually got a slightly more free Saturday to myself so I may get time to do this.

Ollies is much more on with finding them,w hich it turns out Ollies is far more numerous than I thought...  All the way to Indiana, Michigan, NY, NJ, and as far south as Georgia.  I'm shocked.  Used to only be a PA thing.  Believe they originated out this way.

Still, very east coast for the most part aside from OH, IN, and MI.  Most of the country doesn't have them to check even.  They are getting in a ton and dumping them all at once.  I have a feeling K-Mart's allotment wasn't to be out yet.

Awesome, thanks Jesse that is good to know. I will keep that in mind for my next run.

Luckily, we do have an Ollie's here and they have gotten a lot of money from me the past few days. This is just like a gift from the gods, a second chance at some of these things. (Always wanted a cheap opener of a Vulture Droid or Hyena Bomber and now I have both :))

I'd still like a Jedi Turbo Speeder, hoping to find one of these next.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Jesse James on September 22, 2014, 01:17 AM
At another "local" (hour away, but what isn't for me?) Ollies I was able to find more sets...  Actually they had a ton still, this was on Saturday evening.  They have so many I doubt they're selling out.

I think some of the hype's overdone on these sets, personally.  Unless you lucked into the really good ones, or you didn't have half this stuff (as I didn't), most of it was all stuff that was WIDELY available in 2011.  I saw all these Jedi Fighters, the Droid ships (including the Gunship), the V19, the Snowspeeder, the Cloud Car...  Those things even went on sale and I recall the Vintage boxed snowspeeder on clearance at Target.  I saw Swamp Speeders, AT-AP's, Hovertanks, and most all of this stuff surfacing at Ollies and/or K-Mart, people just weren't buying much of it at the time.  I didn't see many Republic Artillery sets back when they were new but I recall quite a few reports of people who did, sooooooo...

So unless you're finding Mando Transports or the Jedi Speeder, which I don't think many saw those in any quanitity, these are just nice ships at great prices.

Don't get me wrong, that's awesome, but I've seen some harping that this is once again a sign of Hasbro not getting people what they want, but I'd gladly point out my above statement that I don't think anything but two of these ships are really "rare" at all, and I'd say the Jedi Speeder is the ONLY one that I can attest is still short-packed.  I saw 3 sets with Mando Transports at the Ollies I hit and it's been that way in most reports I've personally heard.  The Jedi Speeder, it seems to be a one-off at any given place getting these.  It may be the only one that's legitimately "rare".  Though I will say I saw a 501st Hover Tank, and only one of it, and I honestly don't recall many of those on retailer shelves.  Go figure.

Anyway, my point with that long statement is this: The Snowspeeder/CC set is among the most quick to sell out, out of all of these (before even the Mando ship).  That, to me anyway, says this is less about "scalpers" or other phantoms people fear, and less about some made up Hasbro issue on the topic, and much more about good ships at a good price...  It's a novel idea, I know, but it just harkens to me that the only real gripe out there is that things are pricing themselves out of what the MAJORITY (IE: not us) are willing to pay on a whim.  I feel it's creating most of the other issues.  And thus Hasbro is trying to remedy this pricing issue, but they can't just create a new economic situation where they can deliver greatness for cheap, and what they can deliver for cheap the vocal minority (IE: us) simply complain about because it's not the ideal thing we want for half the price it costs to make it.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: McMetal on September 22, 2014, 09:28 AM
I was lucky enough to score the last Jedi Turbo Speeder from the ghetto Ollie's here, glad I made it out alive. I agree this one seems to be the hardest to find. I pretty much have everything I want now (after having bought six of these things over the past week) unless someone discovers a Droid Tri-Fighter or Ahsoka's Starfighter in some odd assortment.

I don't see anything to get bent out of shape about with these things showing up, just seems like a nice surprise to me. I still hope to one day see a Shae Vizsla or Starkiller pop up again on a toy shelf.

This pretty much catches me up for the year, but I still need to track down some older figures like Bespin Vader and Pablo Jill that were either rare here or I just kept passing on until they disappeared.

Picked up a bunch of Biggs on clearance at Amazon and to my shock he is a perfect fit for the AT-ST Pilot heads (K-Mart sets), of which I have about 3 billion of them sitting here, even some unopened I think.  Fell into some fun pilot headswapping with that.

The AT-ST guy heads don't fit on much I'd found, then this, so I'm happy.  I'll do headcasts for the headless AT-ST guys then I guess down the road.  Overall a goofy good day in a way.

Best part was they all rang up for $9.99 each still...power to the people!   ;)

Well, I had an adventure yesterday. Did my first extended toy run in ages. Sadly, all I came up with from the 3.75 line is one Cmdr Doom at Target. But, here's what really bothered me:

Hit my first TRU, nada. Asked them to check the stockroom which they did with no fuss. Still nada. The manager asked if he could check other stores for me. "Heck, yeah!" I said. Porter Ranch TRU, a very nice store, was supposed to have 16 on hand. Knew it wasn't R5's because I had been there a few days before. They were empty. I raced over there. Nothing. Not even shelf space for them. Brought a picture of the UPC I snapped at the previous TRU, asked them to look at the counter. "Yep, computer says we have 16." They called a guy to look. He came out. Here's what the deal is with this store:

Last case of black series 3.75 they got was December of 2014. The 16 in the system were stolen and never purged for the system. Because of the high incident of theft with the line, they decided they wouldn't carry it.

I know that this is just one item in a store of thousands, but how this can get handled in such a half-assed way with management continuing to retain positions in the company is just sad.

Got Gold Leader and wow is he a nice figure.  Deco is great on mine and he's average height instead of that damn Luke sculpt getting reused.  Happy to have him and will pick up more for $10 or less.

Got Gold Leader, Han, Boushh, Chewie and Mosep from a Walmart endcap this afternoon. Passed on Doom and Thorn, the only other two figures they had. There were two of everything, so I at least was able to pick and choose between the "not so bad" and "terrible" paintjobs.

$70 for five figures... :o

I've seen a few of the final black series wave in WalMart clearance aisles, but not at clearance prices. The only one of the troops that I want is another Commander Wolffe in his sandstorm armor from the lost missions episodes.  Oddly enough I see all of the other troopers but not Wolffe.

Oddly enough I see all of the other troopers but not Wolffe.

Remember, Wolffe was the only new Wave 7 figure that wasn't carried into Wave 8 - that's why he's a bit harder to find than Rex or Doom.

Yeah plus he's the most unique fig of the 3 clones and I dare say that didn't hurt his popularity either.

Silly me.  Still, that scene where Plo Koon, Wolffe and the Wolffe Pack troops find the shuttle and lightsaber of Syfo Dyas was one of the coolest moments of the Clone Wars Lost Missions.  And making that TBS Commander Wolffe into a more generic Wolffe Pack member would be a fun customizing project.

At a Wal-Mart that never seemed to put them out back in the summer, I found the part of wave with Mosep in the clearance section for the "clearance price' of $12.83. So I completed my 2015 collecting goal...buying Mosep Binneed*. That was it. Really. It might be the second Star Wars thing I've bought at retail all year. I haven't gotten any Force Awakens items. Wait until I see the movie to see if I care.

*Yeah, i could've gotten online, but I wanted  a decent paint job for my money.

I would've bought the Jawas if I ever saw them. Maybe carbonite Han Solo, too.

Glad to see wave 2 hitting in greater numbers.  I was able to pick up another 3 First Order Stormtroopers the other day.  Right now I've got 5, but I'd certainly like to get more.  But at $13 each?  Those purchases sting a little bit.  And it leaves me hoping that these will sell so well that Hasbro will offer a wide-release Black Series once the deal with Walmart runs out.

I found wave 3 at my local WM today.  The Rey and Finn figs look great, and nice to get a pair of Stormtroopers since I missed out on wave 2.  I like the Poe sculpt, but he and the Trench Hans all had ridiculously bad eye paint jobs.  I may have my 9 year olds hit them with a sharpie to make them look better.   ::)

Found the mother lode of wave 3 today. Picked up Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo, and 2 Troopers plus some others for local peeps. The manager looked at me funny, wondering how many I was going to buy.

Popped mine open just now, and does anyone know how to fix a loose torso joint? One of my Stormies is super loose at the joint. Otherwise, they're great. There were enough there I could pick the best paint apps.

The paint apps on the Phasma that I picked up were not perfect.  I may keep it boxed until I can find a better one.  But these have been kind of scarce so far, so I didn't want to pass.  Especially after my blunder of passing on the 6" versions of Hux and Atsy.

Besides my WM Wv4 find, I was at the local mall where there's a collector/sports memorabilia store, and they had marked down their front rack of SW figures.  He buys a lot by the case, and this is a rack I always watch for "deals".  $6 Dak, and 2 $6 Dutch figures...  Not shabby for that money.  3 good army builder pilots to swap heads with.  Dutch's noggin fits multiple figures, and vice versa.  He makes a cool Death Star Trooper actually.

Left some I may go back for actually.

Likewise another store I frequent had some loose POTF2 stuff for super cheap.  $5 ships and stuff.  Hey, why not?

Post by: Darth_Anton on September 27, 2016, 12:32 AM
I got denied buying a ERG and an Akbar myself. The frustrating thing is always how the employees handle it and then managers telling lies to cover their butts.

First reaction by the check out attendant was: "oh, there must be something wrong with these." Then they called over a manager who scanned it. Then another manager happened by and join in. I asked why I could buy some of the figure in the same exact packaging (i.e. Finn,) but not others? (Was curious how they'd explain it.) Then, I kid you not, this is what one manager said to the other, not to me: "I got an email about these this morning saying they we have to ship them back."

It's funny to hear how many people (myself included) have gotten the "It's a recall" line.  Wouldn't just basic common sense tell you that they're probably new and not supposed to be released yet?  The average person has some idea that there is a new Star Wars movie on the way, right?  Walmart is so clueless in so many way...

What's funny is that the are claimed to be recalled and yet are back on the pegs the next time you are there.  I guess 'recalled' means back to the pegs to them.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Dave on September 30, 2016, 03:49 PM
I'm guessing its part of their excellent management training.  When someone asks you why they can't buy something just say, "it was recalled".  You don't need to know the real reason, just vomit up this line, take the item, and walk away.

I'm glad in Minneapolis we've got 197 Target stores and only a handful of Wal-Marts.  If WM was my only decent retail option I think I would drive my car in to a bridge abutment.

I finally found a 3.75" Black Series Deathtrooper today.  A very refreshing turn of events, since they've been so scarce compared to the Jyn Erso from this wave.  I think the one that I got was stashed, but got discovered and placed back on the pegs.  Because when I got it there were no Jyn's or ERG's to be found.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Nicklab on December 1, 2016, 12:00 PM
I picked up an ERG, Deathtrooper Specialist and FO Stormtrooper today.  And I was also very surprised to see the 3.75" Black Series Vader turning up in stores again.

Considering how much of wave 4 that I saw in stores today, I think Vader may have come from those cases, because I have not seen reports of him turning up in the wave 5 or 6 cases.  It might make sense to get an SA version of Vader back in circulation again considering his role in ROGUE ONE, but it's too bad that the 3.75" Black Series version is from TESB/ROTJ and not ANH.

Yeah, curious distribution on these.  I found the wave with Vader, along with FO Stormtrooper, Luke, Kylo, Leia, Old Han, Phasma, etc.  a week or two ago as well. Weird to see them shipping almost on top of the Ahsoka/ERG/Jyn/Deathtrooper case.

Was out on a road trip for business in Central CA today and decided to hit up a few Walmarts in some rural areas on my way back home...  Proved to be worth the effort as I came across the 3.75" Black Series Scariff Storm Trooper and Cassian Andor figures at two stores in Patterson and Los Banos, CA.  Plenty more left.  They also had plenty of the Jyn Erso, Death Trooper, Admiral Ackbar, Lando, Rey, Han Solo (ROTJ), and General Leia (TFA) figures, as well as a smattering of those left from earlier waves like Finn, Poe Dameron, etc.  Was elated to find the Rouge One 3.75" figures and got multiples of them.  One of the best Star Wars hauls I've had in a while actually  ;D

I did some bargain hunting and got a couple of 3.75" Black Series figures to fill out some dioramas with SA versions of characters.  Notably, Finn and Admiral Ackbar.  The $5.48 price point makes this a lot more easy to do.  Now if only they flood the stores with Scarif Troopers!

I haven't seen those in a while.  I was happy to have some Jyn's available but wish there were a mountain of Scarrif Troopers and Death Troopers of course.

Can't say I'm all boned up over royal guards like some people are.  I didn't realize it was a 3.75" representation of Christ.  It's nice and all, but I saw ample of them routinely this past year.  I'm pretty content on him now.

Now just get those Rogue One Troopers out in absurd numbers since the Scarrif never even hit here.  That whole 2nd wave was non-existent.
Title: Re: Recent purchases
Post by: Nicklab on March 21, 2017, 07:05 PM
I personally like the Royal Guard quite a bit.  The character does effectively nothing in the films except stand there.... and get taken out in the blink of an eye by Yoda in ROTS.  But they're cool to army build for that ROTJ Emporer's arrival diorama.  I think the EU details that Hasbro worked into the figure are also very cool if you're a Crimson Empire fan, right down to the Kir Kanos likeness.

But I agree... I would absolutely LOVE to find Scarif Stormtroopers in abundance.  Especially with this current markdown.  I already got my fill on the Deathtroopers.  I think I got 6 and that was enough for me.  They're unique to ROGUE ONE and they deployed in very small units, so I don't feel the need to go all out with army building those.  But the Scarif Troopers are another deal.  And FWIW, I never saw that wave in the wild.  I got mine online from Walmart.com.

Found a First Order Stormtrooper for under $6 and got him. Never had one until now, wasn't up for paying $13 for the bad paint ops I saw over a year ago. Decent figure...but suffer that inability to sit like a human.  And yeah, the eye paint is a bit off on mine.

Strange all the Ackbar's sold weeks ago. Leia, Han, Finn and Lando are mostly what's left. One cruddy Vader.
