Fan Art / Re: New sketchpad - 3 images.

These are nice Brad. The last one is my personal favorite. You do well with mysterious subject matter. You leave a lot for the viewer to decide and that's a great approach.

Because of who I am, I'm going to tell you what I think (like that's any surprise)...

1. You're ability to blend values to create smooth transitions and mood is solid and well executed. That is your STRENGTH! You are good at it. So start doing what you are not. Do that which makes you uncomfortable. Your Crow is ragged and not rendered as well as the others, but that is good. That's taking a risk! You will learn so much more from doing what you suck at or do not know. Don't just draw to draw or limit yourself to one style or medium. Experiment and do a lot of sucky drawings in your sketch books. That's what they are for and they help you grow and improve and show you what you need to do next try out. The fact that you are moving out of your prefered method and media is a statement and I applaud you for it and for the courage to show us all something I'm sure you feel could be better. So just keep doing it and do not sell yourself short. Art school is either rich people that are not artists, people that follow norms and pump out spec filling and bland ideas and projects, people that will drop out soon, fine artists that will never make it and your type...

You are the guy that can make it and follow your artistic path because you see through all that and you aren't there for chuckles. But the one thing you have to do Brad, is take responsibility for becomming better and challenging yourself and failing to find success. You will become as good as you drive yourself to be. Take responsibility and go beyond and above and take risks and make mistakes. A's and grades are a plus, but what you learn outside the classroom is more important to finding your voice and learning. Like life Brad. School didn't teach me that pot was bad for me, I went and became a bonafide abuser of all things mind altering to escape (blah, blah, blah). When you are at the edge of life and want to let go, you need to dig deep and find a reason or voice that helps you endure and survive. Not exactly a school subject there. Maybe an after school special subject, but they always glorified the tragedy of suicide, addiction, sex issues and peer pressure. What I'm saying is, keep it up. You are going to do great things if you keep at it.

Thanks Brad. Being a dedicated artist rarely pays the bills but the satisfaction one gets from something that has a lot of time and effort in it is payment enough I guess. Hope I can someday do some side thing at least and bring in a little extra for doing what I love.

As far as the bedside sketches are concerned, I'd say that you are your worst critic and if you like them and are proud enough to post them, then do. If not I would say you take them and draw them again and expand and do them the way they ought to be done. If you want me to check them out, send them or something. I'm always interested in what your brain is capable of...

I'm posting 2 new pieces I've been working on lately for a small portfolio/ashcan to give-away at a local convention of sorts...

The first is the cover and while I would like to say it is Chewbacca, it's actually supposed to be Bigfoot/Sasquatch, i. e. the 'Unexplained' title... The second is based on a character that was in a dream I had once. I was driving a bus and he was in my way and yelling at me with all these distorting and disturbing faces. I am trying to make more dream inspired drawings as I have had some doozies (Brad, can you relate?)

I have been struggling with ink & brush now for about 7 months and these are break-through pieces for me. Sasquatch took about 10 - 15 hours and it's all brush and the original is 7' x 9'. It looks prretty good here because I can manipulate the value levels. I am finding it to be quite difficult to find or try and create an ink concoction that will give opaque black the first time and stay after erasing. No lead means less opacity. I have tried the Raphael Kolinsky sable brushes and they just did not do it for me. I have tried many lately (at $20+ a piece, I'm getting sick of testing) and the Windsor & Newton series 7 is by far the best and most consistent. I buy them in bulk from Dick Blick, check through them (about 1 in every 5 is prime) and send back the others. I am using a base of Black Magic ink, Black Cat (Blick) and whatever else is around when I need to fill. I let the Black Magic sit out for a day or so to thicken it up and then add some Black Cat to top it off and mix and start brushing. I just finished the cover to my comic and I spent at least 40 hours redoing areas or correcting mistakes. Through that trial, I learn so much and improved my ability and speed. The key is always staying patient and not getting ahead and keeping that brush loaded. Some might think detail should be done with a Cro-Quill or something, but brush can get you 1 hair lines if you practice. The only thing that it's not good for is straight lines and I use a Rapido-Graph for that.

The type is hand lettered (traced it after creating it in Adobe Illustrator and then gave it that rough texture with brush. I saw a similar font in an old Spectre comic book recently and borrowed it. Anyway, I am still in the experimental stage with style (been reading too much Charles Burnes and '50's comics lately), but I like the direction and I am finally becoming confident and proud of my drawings again (haven't felt like this for at least 10+ years).  I do it whenever I can and I guess that is a good reason why I have improved (in my mind) so much in these last few months. Hope you all like 'em!

Replaced the former with a better scan 8/8/04.

Now that you mention Bill Ward and that your intent is exaggeration, it makes sense. It's just something I'm not a big fan of. I'm glad you didn't take what I said in a negative way and I respect your ability and artistic knowledge. I am just from the school that says if you want to break rules or stretch them, you need to know and follow them first. From what I can tell, you have studied anatomy and have taken the true form and tinkered with it to suit your tastes. They are exceptional works. Your composition is well executed and the different pencil techniques you use to create value and create texture are a testament to your ability. Glad to see another well versed artist in the forums. Keep up the good work!

Dude, you are a talented individual with an imagination that is in the gutter. I enjoy the pin-up quality of your work, but I feel the exagerated flotation devices take your talent and turn it into Playboy cartoon fodder. I would just suggest that you tone it down a notch and work within proportions that are voluptuous, but within the realm of reality. I think of Frazetta, Vargas, the 50's pulp stuff when I see your work in every way except the chest area. The hip area on the second drawing is astounding and well presented. You just need to stop looking at balloons or beachballs as reference and start studying the female human anatomy. It takes a drawing that is well done and enticing and alluring and turns it into bimbo, sleazy, adolescent cartoon work. I asume you are above that and while people may not agree with me, I am just giving an honest opinion from a fellow artist's point-of-view. No offense intended. I guess I'm a bit of a butt man and that may also play into it. Anyway, good stuff sans the dodge balls in Leia's bra...

I just received response from Tony (the innovative mind that started this list). He is going to send me his official rules and an updated list soon. I will feel better then about adding or subtracting or the criteria. So far the response here has been really hilarious and I appreciate the submissions. I will post when I have amended the rules and list a la Tony.

What's the Brandon Frazier movie with an animated monkey? That was unbearable!

I'll add Crossroads and wait on Swept Away. The One fits into the Kung Fu/Karate/Martial Arts genre and most are bad and that is why they are good. Even a modern martial arts movie fits and will always have a few redeeming scenes.

I saw 8mm and thought it shouldn't be there until I really thought about what was memorable or really good about it. Nick Cage is great, but the plot and movie depended on the taboo to reel people in and ultimately it just kept getting worse and worse and wasn't really unpredictable. Mel Gibson was in a film at the same time about a rogue who wants revenge and that was good in comparrison because it was gritty, harsh and unpredictable. Mind you this is my opinion. But I thought about how I could justify 8mm as being good and ultimately I said to myself, I guess it did suck...

What's that really bad movie with Dan Akroyd and Kim Bassinger about marrying an alien? That thing sucked!

Masters of the Universe? I love Dolph, but that is even below bad. Can't nominate Punisher (the 1st one) or I come in Peace, because they have enough that is bad enough to be comical and thus they are ultimately entertaining. That's why there aren't Van Damm movies.

I suggest that someone  help with any Steven Segal movie that is not there already. He was new and pretty adept at kicking butt, but he got old quick and his 'one-liners' are beyond bad.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Dumpster Diving
« on: June 3, 2004, 01:08 PM »
I am a 'found object' scuptor. I collect junk that I feel has artistic possibility and combine it with other junk to create and recontextualize these objects into a sculpture. This is why I have become a dumpster diver. Ultimately, finding the junk is as much a part of my creative process as combining the junk to create art.

In my quest to find aesthetically pleasing junk, I have come across many cool things that don't fit the art part, but are collectible or worth picking out of the coffee grounds and fruit rinds...

Unfortunately, I have not found anything that relates to Star Wars. But I have found full toy chests with all sorts of goodies in them. My best find toy-wise, was a dumpster with at least 4 chess boards and pieces (complete chess sets), one of which was 3ft x 3ft and the pieces were huge. There was also one made of marble and another with mother of pearl inlays. Also in this treasure dumpster: collectible card sleeves, 6 J. R. R. Tolkien books without damage (the LOTR set included) and some nice TSR D&D books. I assume either a mother with no clue or a new girlfriend/wife dumped the stuff without the owners consent.

I will say this about dumpster diving...

If you think for a moment about all the mothers that threw away all those 1950's sports card and comic book collections that we all hear so much about, there is always the possibility that this can happen again and if you look the odds are better that you may stumble onto something like this.

I have a few dumpster diving tips (for the serious diver):
1. Get some good work gloves, a nice stick or something to move trash with, tools (you never know when you may have to do a little work to get what you want and some rags to wipe off anything if necessary.
2. Spring is prime time, especially around college campuses. The things that rich, out-of-state students will toss is ridiculous.
3. If you are busted tresspassing or looking through someones trash, tell them you are an artist looking for materials to use in your art and they will help you find stuff or just blow you off.

Deep Blue Sea will stay off for now.

Godzilla '98 did and Wing Commander did suck. Party Moster looks pretty good from the box front. I like party movies. I'll check it out... NOT! Wolf was pretty awful considering everything (adapted from a great Jim Harrison novel, Jack Nicholson...). These will be added soon. Still working on making contact with Tony...

Dusk 'til Dawn is the worst! I will not take it off. While it had a decent cast, that didn't save the meaningless plot or flow of the movie. The script and dialogue was the worst. I was stunned at how hard it was to watch and how bad it was. I kept waiting for something profound to happen or something to save the movie and it just kept sinking.

No sequels allowed Brad. But can't imagine it will be any better than suck.

Okay...

to KNEEL BEFORE ZOD...

I cannot relate or say any of those movies do not belong. Please consider that we are talking about paying money to go see these in the theaters. If we are not with our kids or a spouse, we are out of there! To comment briefly (highly opinionated btw) on your choices of movies you think do not belong...
Airheads - good cable movie at best...
Bio Dome - the only good scene in BD is when 'Squirrel' is trying to break down his Baldwin's last meal based on smell. Beyond that, pure suck.
Child’s Play - Bad horror flick? Cult movie? Chuckie is novelty horror at best and stupid at best.
Dark Man - Can't even comment because I made it through maybe 1/3 of the movie and I'm a comicbook fan.
Father of the Bride - With daughter or spouse or friend that with daughter that can relate it's fine. Martin Short is too exaggerated and it's just not a good theater movie.
From Dusk to Dawn - This is in my worst top ten. I was mortified when I watched it because I expected such amazing things. I can't even think about it, it makes me so upset.
Ghost Dad - Cosby is good for TV and stand-up. How many movies have you seen him in? Ghost Dad is proof why.
Harry and the Harrisons (I assume you meant Hendersons?) - I di mean Hendersons. My bad. Good for TV. A sit-com on the big screen. Doesn't work.
Hero (The Jet Li film?!?!!  Or is there another movie called Hero that's no good?) - I'll look into that. I am looking to contact Tony soon and I will confirm it's origin and reason.
Problem Child - Annoying to the point I wanted to rip my eyes and ears out and off.
Weekend at Bernies - It's clever for maybe 2 scenes with dead Bernie. Then it just gets old... Quick!

It's Pat and all 4 of Tyderium's are winners and in and will be added soon. I'll look into the Guttenberg site Scott. Good call and I agree, the guy is the worst. That may make Short Circuit an addition...

Thanks! I was crying over the barrel of monkeys and the Steve Guttenberg stuff.
