Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Packaging Issue...
« on: May 5, 2007, 03:56 AM »
Tonight I was moving some stuff around and ended up unpacking more of my Star Wars things.  I was opening some Sideshow statues, and yes...saving the boxes.

These boxes take up HUGE amounts of room, but because these items are worth hundreds each, it seems like I should totally save the box.  If I move, it seems like the best way to protect the piece, sorta like the Gentle Giant stuff.

Anything made by Hasbro though, boxes go right into the recycling.

I just prefer to not count anymore :-X

I know how you feel. I had quit counting for awhile, but I started tracking again and I'm spending more and more each year.  The worst thing is although I'm making great progress with my Star Wars room (pictures coming soon)....more than half my collection is still in the package because I'm running out of shelf room.

Squeez-its were good.

I wore many things that were in style over there years, but the big fad I remember buying into clothing-wise was Reebok "Pumps".  Those were really expensive, but I convinced my parents to get me some, and they told me I had to wear them until they wore out, which I did.  Everyone had them and finally I did too, except I wore the damn things for another 4 months after they were no longer cool....because I had promised I would.  ;D

I've been collecting this line for a long time.  Regular edition pieces have NOT been that hard to come by with the exception of some things released in the first year or so ( AOTC Yoda, 1st edition Vader, Boba Fett) and when GG decided to do the AOTC and ROTS Clone Trooper cases.  Exclusives are a whole other story.

Regular editions have not been hard to come by as long as you got them via pre-order or shortly after they're released.  If you wait a month or so hoping to find it for under MSRP, you never know what will happen.

There have been very few "Army builders" in the past, so it's hard to compare this Royal Guard situation with anything besides the clones.  For both Episodes 2 and 3, they short packed one color, and that color was harder to find for retail.    On the other hand, we have the Stormtroopers, those were a huge edition size that got down to under 40 bucks at one point at retail.   Probably because there wasn't a variation.

But this whole scare tactic that is going on with the Royal Guard and Senate Guard is not serious enough to warrant changing how I buy busts.  I will not be breaking my pattern of ordering them through my comic shop the way I've been doing for years.  I managed to get the Utapau Clone Trooper that way and I'm certain that I'll be getting the Senate Guard that way too.

Fair enough. These guards aren't really changing "how" I buy busts either.  I usually pre-order the ones I think will be harder to find, and I usually wait to buy the ones that will be more common, because I get them for less than retail.  I'm willing to bet the Blue Guard will be harder to get, and that's why I pre-ordered one.  The Red guard, I'll bet I get for around 40 bucks...and I'm waiting on him.

While the name might be Gentle Giant Limited, don't let that name fool you, Josh.  The edition sizes that GG produces are completely based on the number of pre-orders they get.

Fair enough, but collectors are also figuring out case distributions and edition sizes and ordering accordingly. Peole know about those big runs of Vader and Yoda, so they procrastinate, but some other more limited bust sells out right away.  In the case of these guards, collectors have already seen the case distributions and are snatching up the blue guard.  GG may be setting the edition size based on pre-orders, but I think a good majority of collectors only snatch them up BECAUSE of the edition size.  Kind of like the whole chicken and egg thing.

As for limited edition sizes?  The only time the edition sizes are determined by means other than preorders is when Gentle Giant is doing a convention or some other exclusive.  That's when they want to generate buzz.

Yeah, don't remind me. The fact that they're making my favorite things (Clones) limited this summer is probably the worst thing they've done to collectors yet.  On the other hand, if they weren't doing this, perhaps interest would fade...who knows?

Now with the scare tactic that seems to be getting employed here, I'm fairly certain that the pre-order numbers for the Royal Guard and Senate Guard are going to be pretty healthy.

Perhaps....but as someone who has been collecting these since the first year, I've seen too many busts sell out to risk waiting around and paying some inflated markup because I didn't pre-order early.  That's why I placed the order.  ;D

Not sure if I will shell out the $600 to buy a PS3 for this game, but I will consider buying a 360 for it.

It's shipping to both on launch day, so looks like everyone will be able to play this one.  I do know the 360 version promises to have exclusive content, but who knows what that means.  Could be a downloadable mission, or something entirely different.

I do wonder which version they're showing in the trailer.

On GG's store the Blue Guard just says Coming Soon - I don't even see the pre-order button anymore.

Are you a collectors club member? That's how I pre-ordered mine.
While I agree with the sentiment in Nicklab's post, frankly...the name of the company is Gentle Giant Limited.  Their specific purpose seems to be to keep these things as hard to get and exclusive as they can, which means short packing the Blue Guard is something I wouldn't put past them. I verified that it was pre-sold out everywhere I usually buy busts as soon as the case assortment was announced (Something a fellow collector alerted me to).  After that, I pre-ordered it the first place I could, because I don't want two royal guards and I don't want to buy a whole case.

If it's easier to find later, I only paid 55 shipped for it, and I can deal with that.  The Orange Clone situation has taught me that if you can pay retail for something they're short packing on purpose, you'll be ok.

Just watched it...it looks like a really great city, but I'm wondering what the story will be about this time.  I mean, I like all the standard stuff, but it'd be cool if they did something new with this game.

The question is...what could that be?  Online gangs like Saints Row?  That would be pretty cool.

24
What about people that put up blue or white lights for parties and stuff?  I'm never sure if they just left them up there since Christmas...but I have to admit, it looks cool.

It's uncanny how realistic that looks.  That could be a picture of a guy from my 501st Garrison and I couldn't even tell the difference.

It's a pity you got screwed over as an early adopter, and are stuck with a lesser box to what you'd prefer.   ;D

No moreso than when the DS Lite came out and I wanted that thing, or that slimmer PS2 with the built in LAN that I ended up buying. I've gotten over a year of gaming in on my 360 and I don't feel like that was time wasted. I think the Elite is cool, but not cool enough to upgrade.  I'm sticking with my Pro until such a time as I run out of HDD space or need HDMI for some reason.  Then maybe I'll get one.

I might buy one of those shiny black controllers though...I hear they're selling them standalone.  ;D

That's a pretty funny picture.  I wonder how many pictures with the Hooters girls have guys staring straight down like that.

Regarding your tagalong, you need to have a quick discussion with the mom, tell her you're trying to train the dog and you need some privacy.

If that doesn't work, you could try lying:

Tell her the dog is training to be a helper dog and should not be around anyone but you while training.

And the price bump's kind of disappointing, too.  This would have been a great opportunity for them to put the squeeze on Sony a little by lowering the other two SKUs in price (or, better yet, getting rid of one of them altogether), and releasing this one at or closer to the Premium's price of $400.

I'm sure I'll wind up getting one before Halo comes out, anyway.  Hopefully there'll be some good promos on it between now and then.

That's exactly what bugs me about it.  I really think this was a great opportunity to drop the price on the existing consoles a little, but still keep that 399 price tag on SOMETHING 360 Xbox related.  Creating a new sku that's 79 dollars more expensive just seems backwards to me somehow.

It's only an extender for your PC files....so it accesses things off your network but doesn't store them natively.

Apparently the Blue is sold out everywhere, so I went ahead and pre-ordered it direct from GG.
I guess that's the first good thing those 50 dollars have bought me so far.

Where are you hearing that?

I want to give my local guys a call to see what they have on order before I make a panic-order that will cost a little more.

Check the usual suspects as far as online retailers go. Northside, Razors Edge, etc, etc.  This single bust is pre-sold out on several of the best sites to pre-order on.....which is probably because it's short packed.  Sorta like the Orange ROTS clone was.  I didn't want to buy a whole case, so I ordered from GG direct for 50 bucks.
