Title: Dream Toylines
Post by: Scott on July 11, 2003, 02:48 PM
What Line hasn't been made yet but you wish someday a manufacturer would pick up the license and run with it

For me I have the following wishes:

Indiana Jones Preferrably by Hasbro and same scale as SW
Ghostbusters Movie line not the cartoons, very realistic...I'm thinking McFarlane
The Goonies One of my favorite movies and would make for some neat figures
M.A.S.K. Re-Release, these were the best toys of the 80's behind GI Joe in my book, up the scale to 3 3/4" and bring back a new cartoon...mmmmm

And right now at #1 is Sesame Street style Muppets figures

Someone is sitting on a serious goldmine

Indiana Jones - lots of potential here
Robotech - So many characters, and great vehicles.  Matchbox didn't do it justice
Predator - The movie.  Just the Predator alone isn't enough, how about the Special Forces team with Dutch and Blaine?
Starship Troopers - Mobile Infantry against bugs anyone?

Indiana Jones!   ;D

Buffy Legends: ML style line devoted to Buffy / Angel figures, by Toy Biz or Art Asylum, anyone who actually cares.

For me, it's not about property so much as format.

All of my dream toylines would be in 3 3/4" scale; small, collectible, and poseable. I love this scale since it's a space-saver, allows for a LOT of diversity, is usually pretty affordable, and is small enough for some decent sized vehicles, playsets, or homemade dioramas. Those are the rules; here's my list:

- Star Trek - Art Asylum has great sculptors but c'mon, 7" figures? Who's got that kind of space after you do the crews from each series? Get with the program! And give me Bridge Playsets, dangit!

- DC Comics - DC Direct has a superb line of 6" figures, but I'm looking for Super Powers 2, with a line as diverse and easily available as DCD's line. But with VEHICLES and PLAYSETS!

- Muppets - The only reason I DON'T collect this line is scale. I love these guys but again, little space.

- Space: 1999 - I had some of these toys as a kid and watched the show religiously. I'd buy these by the gift set if someone offered them in 3 3/4" scale. Gimme a big honkin' Eagle Transporter, too, while you're at it.

- Marvel Comics - Take most of the figures from the Legends and Spidey Classics lines, scale 'em down, take out some of that nasty looking articulation, and I'll buy a ton to go with my DC figures.

- Indiana Jones - While 21st Century acquiring this license would be the obvious way to go here, they're a wee bit big for 3 3/4" scale. Still, all that wonderful 1:18 scale WWII stuph shouldn't go to waste. :D

- The X-Files - Yeah, McFarlane did movie figures, but there was also a TV series that was never capitalized on, a few years worth as I recall. Cancer Man, the Lone Gunman, and the rest really need to be immortalized in plastic.

- American Idol - Why a toy manufacturer hasn't jumped on this hot TV property is beyond me. Put out a 3-pack of judges with an electronic base that includes phrases from "I think you could do better" to "That is the worst sound I have ever heard bar none."

- Friends - You know, Friends. Joey, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, and Phoebe? Maybe Richard and Ursula? Ross' ex-wife and Ban would be fun.

- Seinfeld - The best part of this line is that the figures don't really have to do anything to stay authentic to the show. Jerry's apartment is a must-have playset, and maybe the Soup Nazi's kitchen.

There are probably dozens of properties out there I'd be totally into. Gimme a TV Land assortment including Adam West's Batman, George Reeves' Superman, and Gilligan's Island. I'm an Abbott & Costello fan, as well as a Universal Monsters afficionado.

Just give it to me in that beloved 3 3/4" scale.  ;D

NUMERO UNO for me... (and I tell my wife and kids consantly when we watch  :D)

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

The possibilities are endless w/ this line....

I mean each child as well as each parent/guardian
Then each child in their variant form
Willy and his Oompa Lommpas (even they'd have variants)
Playsets out the wazoo...
Vehicles...

This line could be an incredble one if it was executed just right. You could add electronics, scratch n' sniff (the snoozeberries taste like snoozeberries)...

If only...

Hey anyone want to hire me that runs/owns a toy cpmpany  ;)

Great topic, I can't really think of any other ideas that haven't already been mentioned.  The ones I have always thought about/wanted:

Indiana Jones (SW size and style)
Seinfeld (my all time fave show, I think a line of these would do pretty well)
Goonies (agreed, that would make a cool line of figs too)

I'll also second the MASK redo idea, I thought that toyline was great when I was a kid.  Otherwise, my favorites from my childhood have pretty much be resurrected in great style (He-Man, Marvel, GI Joe, and the new Batman figure looks nice).

Gilligan's island

Hmm, me like.

Never mind the Ginger Mary-Anne debate (the latter) but you could do the figures, have the Boat (with sealing, removable hull damage), all of the huts, the island "natives", gorilla, Wrongway Feldman (?); accessory packs of the professor's inventions.   ;D

Lucky I still have mine & the 9" figures.  :-*

Only 2 lines of figures stand out in my mind.

Krull- movie figs for this one would be great.

Army of Darkness-Sure we've got the larger Ash and Bad Ash figs, but wouldn't you like some 3 3/4" size figs of Ash, Bad Ash, Ash's chick, the smithy, the weasel guy who whips him at the biginning of the movie, King Arthur, Prince Henry the Red, Skeleton warriors...

This is a great topic!  Here are my choices...

- "I Love Lucy" = This is one of my favorite TV shows, and there are so many possibilities for this line.

- "Gladiator" = Awesome movie, endless action, lots of different characters... how could this NOT be done?

- "WWE" = For those who don't know what this stands for it's World Wrestling Entertainment.  All the figures that have been made in recent years suck!  If McFarlane could take this line over it would just rock.  I don't own any of these figures because they just suck.

- "The Three Stooges" = How many shows were made?  I could see endless opportunity with this genre.

- Multiple Cartoon Lines = What would be great is if they did an entire line of different cartoon shows.  Here are some examples... Underdog, Warner Brothers (Bugs Bunny & Co.), The Flintstones, South Park, Tom and Jerry, Voltron, Woody Woodpecker, The Bullwinkle Show, etc.

- "Seinfeld" = I know this was already suggested, but it's a great idea!  They could probably do about 3 screen scenes or more for each episode that's been made.

- "Time Bandits" = This was an awesome movie as a child, and it's even better as an adult.

I'm sure I can think of some more, but that's all my brain is dishing out at the moment.

Star Wars:  Yeah, a GOOD (And by good I mean competitive and near flawless) toy line completely in-scale with each other (3.75"/1:18)...  The ultimate toy line in honor of the greatest series of films ever.  No corners cut, no holds barred, and no thoughts to varying demographics...  Just the collectors.

Star Trek:  A great and expansive 3.75" line for the modern Star Trek Series and movies would be so wonderful...  Something akin to my Star Wars ideas, but just set in the continuing missions of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her various spin-off series like DS9, and the films like First Contact and Nemesis...  Great series deserving of great toys.

Indiana Jones:  I'm predicting this will be the most mentioned series here...  And rightfully so...  IJ is a long overdue series of great toys.  Again in 3.75" and done as flawless as a toy line could be done.

IE:  Hasbro can't do it.

Starcom:  The U.S. Spaceforce would be great if it was brought back, and given updates...  I'd keep the small scale it was in before, but build on it with things like removeable helmets, maybe extra articulation (Possible now), and such...  Starcom rocked, and was ahead of its time when it came out way back when.  I've often considered selling my collection only to realize I have to keep it...  Too bad it's so underappreciated as a toy line.

G.I. Joe:  When I was a kid, Joe was THE toy line...  Today, it's got a broad appeal and is really the flagship license for Hasbro anymore, but it's not what I'd like it to be personally...  I'd take the possibilities of todays articulation/features/sculpting, and give Joe a make over in the 3.75" scale...  The feel of the original 1982 line would be there (The "realistic" feel/look) while the figures would be 10x as detailed, poseable, and accessories galore.

Joe still captures my attention, even if it's not my "thing" anymore, and I think it's the greatest toy line ever...  No other toy line but Barbie and Lego can possibly even hope to acheive the longevity in the industry, nor the massive ammounts of success.

Nothing but the absolute best could compete with my childhood memories of playing with the best toys I ever had.  Yo Joe!

Indiana Jones would be fantastic, especially with all proper scale accessories (like 21st Century Toys)

Ultimate Star Wars: Going along with JJ here, ultimate versions of each character, decked out in well masked articulation (ala 21st Century Toys). Properly scaled vehicles and accessories (which wouldnt go much farther than starships). Authenticity and detail and displayability over playability. A collectors only line (also the same direction I'd like for Indiana Jones). If the vehicle is too big, then it wont be scaled down. Either they will risk it and make large scale vehicles, or portions (like a MF cockpit and other portions of the Falcon, as dioramas). The line would also go into EU, and crank out an equal amount of detail. Loads of scene and diorama sets, enough so much that each figure in the line will have a predetermined compatible scene or diorama, so everything is displayed :)

Star Wars Clix: Ala HeroClix, only Star Wars, once again properly scaled (allowing for massive vehicles), with environmental and architectural kits

An action figure scale LOTR line, once again going along the same requirements as Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Battle Beasts, re-released, maybe slightly updated but holding very true to their original form

M.A.S.K. re-released, once again allowing slight updates but holding true to original form

Kubricks: US: No changes, I just want Kubricks to be imported to the retail market in the US so I dont have to go through hell and back to get them ;)

Goonies: 3 3/4 line (once again with Star Wars requirements) with a large ship scene diorama. Maybe a larger McFarlane style line as well, depicting certain favorite scenes

Awww crap how did I forget LOTR!?!?!

You're right, I want a 3.75" LOTR line...  EVERY character made, and made to perfection...  Uruk-Hai sold by the 10-pack...  Same with Rohan soldiers, Gondor soldiers and rangers, Moria Orcs, and they could go further into Middle-Earth lore beyond the films and the trilogy and do various "EU" Dwarves, elves, etc...

I mean THIS would be a huge line I think...   Figures and monsters out the whazzoo...  Oh the diorama's I would create!

Functiioning sheathes for swords and daggers...  Bows with quivers of arrows...  Cloth cloaks for super poseability...  NO action features what-so-ever...  Immensely detailed inter-connecting playsets...  Every character done in every outfit with the best detail and articulation imagineable...

Heaven would be carded if this were the case. :)

And then Lego would get a license to do LOTR as well...  Talk about some great medeival lego sets.  ;D  Helm's Deep Lego style?  Oh yeah....  Mini-figure Orcs?  Yup.  It was an obvious license Lego just shoulda gone for.

I love all the ideas, especially the LOTR one, but I don't think LEGO will ever get the liscense to do LOTR stuff as that one company, IntelliBlok or whatever has rights to LOTR and after some of the half-made playsets they put out for FOTR, I can see why they didn't do anything for TTT.  But this is a DREAM thread, so I think LOTR LEGO would be cool.

I don't own anything that's from LOTR, but if someone was to make 3.75" figures,I think I would seriously think about collecting those.  I love the LOTR movies, and this would help me expand my collecting options away from just collecting Star Wars.

I would love to see (And the fact that it's actually possible adds a certain...lubrication...to this dream) a Star Wars/Transformers crossover line. With Autobots as Alliance ships (X-, Y-, B-, A-Wings, Snowspeeder, and the Falcon as the leader) and Decepticons as Imperial craft (TIE, TIE-in, Bomber, Vader's Tie, an AT-ST,  and an AT-AT). All Action Fleet scale, but to-scale.

That would be the initial releases, more could follow (Landspeeders, Cloud Cars, Shuttles, Speeder Bikes, maybe even prequel ships with a "prequel" storyline). Just as long as they were "classic" style TFs, ie they were mostly one piece with an "authentic" looking vehicle mode.

Throw in a few Action Fleet- styled SW heroes and villains (Or can you imagine Han, Luke, Chewie, Vader etc. as Headmasters and Targetmasters?)

Unicron as the Death Star, anyone?

One thing I always wanted as a kid was a Transformers Starscream that was big enough to properly transform, yet be able to hold a Gi Joe-sized figure in the cockpit.

But, nowadays, I find myself wishing for awesome LOTR and Buffy figures done in the 3 3/4 inch scale to compliment my Star Wars figures. Aragorn and Luke hanging out, Leia and Buffy kicking a$$ and cracking one-liners, and Gimli and the Gammorean Guards enjoying malt beer and red meat off the bone in front of roaring fires. Life would be about perfect then.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would certainly make my wish list. (Gotta have Nemo's car!)

The Fifth Element has some cool, Star Wars-type stuph in it. (I want that taxi for my Coruscant skyline diorama!)

I know a Hellboy line is already on the way, but a 3 3/4" line would be irresistable.

And can I get a 2-pack of Jake & Elwood Blues just for my Cantina display? They'd look great behind a chicken wire fence jammin' with the Modal Nodes.

King Kong- This would be a great line if done in 3 3/4. It would compensate for the mediocre Playmates line.
The Goonies- I'd love a Chunk and Sloth 2-Pack, and a Chunk with "Truffle Shuffle Action Feature".
LOTR- I want tons of characters, like the SW line. Release 'em in TS, TH, FOTR, TTT, and ROTK waves and I'd be in heaven.

Not quite what we probably want yet, but I got an e-mail newsletter from BBTS stating they now have a new 12" Sloth (from Goonies) figure up for preorder.  It sounds like it is limited, and pretty pricey, but if anyone's interested you can check it out HERE (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TST10002&mode=retail).  Now if someone would just do a nice line of Goonies action figures, complete with all the Goonies, we'd be set.  Hopefully this is the start of that :P.

Post by: Greedo The Green Menace on July 28, 2009, 10:52 PM
My #1 choice would be a 3 3/4" Lord of the Rings line. Just seems perfect for this scale with all the army building potential, and it has a great slew of visually interesting characters to choose from. Collectible wise LOTR has been kind of dead in the water as of late, Sideshows 12" offerings seem to have fizzled out of existence, the toybiz 6" line has been long dead, the only thing I see these days are the occasional gentle giant busts. Why no love for Rings?
Now with the Hobbit movie coming up soon, perhaps we may see a resurgance interest in this property. I'd love to see Hasbro take up the property, if they had the same quality as the Star Wars stuff. Anyone agree? What else would you love to see done?

There are really only two "dream toylines" I have left I think -

3 3/4" Blade Runner - Deckard, Batty, Pris, Leon, Zhora, Tyrell, Rachel, Sebastian, Gaff, and Bryant.  For vehicles, there'd be a Police Spinner or two and the Replicant's Shuttle (the one they used to escape).

and

3 3/4" Seven Samurai - Kambei, Gorobei, Shichiroji, Heihachi, Katsuhiro, Kyuzo, and Kikuchiyo for sure.  Toss in some bandits for them to fight and some villagers for backgrounds and that'd be sweet.

I would buy both of those lines in a heartbeat.
Title: Re: Dream Toylines

Scott makes a good point.  These days, so many of these franchises/series/movies/etc. are getting their own toylines, whether it is a specialty store type thing or at mass retail.  Many of the ones I had hoped to see (Goonies, Ghostbusters, etc.) have now happened, although with a stricter budget/less display space/etc., I've passed on them.

I guess off the top of my head, there aren't a whole lot left.  Star Wars is going strong, we have seen or are seeing great lines for both Marvel and DC, and franchises from my youth have nice, nostalgic lines as well (G.I. Joe, MOTU Classics, Transformers Classics/Universe).  The only other ones I could think of would be a MOTUC styled Thundercats line, or maybe a nice 3 3/4" scaled Harry Potter line (which I think they got in the U.K.).  I was always surprised that the Potter franchise didn't see more success and/or support here in the U.S., after the somewhat crappy early Mattel offerings.  I don't know if I'd purchase either line at this point or not, but they would be cool to see.

I want:  Historical figures in 3 3/4 inch scale...if I must pick a time period or Franchise, I want Tombstone action figures.

I want several versions of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Virgil and Morgan Earp and the Cowboys as well.  I want horses, wagons and an OK Corral playset.  Heck there could even be a Big Nose Kate and Josie Earp figure for those collectors who MUST have females.

I would pick up almost anything in the 3 3/4 in scale though, that LOTR idea would get me intersted for sure.

I always wanted a LOTR 3.75" line of figures.  I didn't collect the ToyBiz stuff because I dind't like the scale but if they brought them in line with Joe/SW I'd be all over them.  To the point I'd probably even stop buying SW to collect them.

Same for Harry Potter.  If somone put out a really well detailed 3.75" line with nice sculpt and articulation with plenty of accessories I'd buy into it.

There are other lines that have already been made that if they were 3.75" scale I'd be all over (Halo, Stargate, BSG, Starship Troopers, Babylon 5).  Although I've said that before about Star Trek and then haven't bought any of the figures for the new film.  Maybe if they'd done TNG, Voyager and DS9?

Lines that haven't been done but I'd love to see?  Hmmm....  It's actually getting to the point now that almost everything has been licensed as a toy somewhere.  It's just that my two favorite scales are 1:6 and 1:18 and a lot of lines haven't been in those scales.  And some of the ones that have, I didn't care for (Terminator, new ST).

I had a dream last night where upon entering the action figure aisle at Target, I found an awesome line of SA 3.75" figures from Hasbro called At the Movies.  It was awesome - there were basic carded figures and vehicles from a whole pile of great sci-fi/fantasy movies -

For basic figures, there was:
- Maximus and Commodus from Gladiator
- Deckard and Roy Batty from Blade Runner
- Korben Dallas and Leeloo from Fifth Element
- Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity
- Cornelius and Zira from Planet of the Apes (1960s version)
- Marty McFly and Doc Brown from BTTF
- V from V for Vendetta

For vehicles, there was a Police Spinner (Blade Runner), flying Taxi Cab (Fifth Element), and the Delorian (BTTF).  All for just $20 each.

Too bad it was just a dream...  :(

Not bad. I was trying to think about this thread and what i would want but nothing really jumps out at me as missing. I have Star Wars, Marvel, DC, MOTU, and now ThunderCats covered and those were the lines i collected as a kid. I would love to see the Skeleton Warriors line revisited in MOTUC scale and a Spawn line in MU scale but other than that I am good.

It's interesting to see this bumped back up with a Hobbit line coming later this year and a new Star Trek movie in production.

I was watching part of the 2009 ST movie on TV last weekend and wishing that Playmates had done a better job on their toys.  They had some good ideas, but the execution just wasn't there.

There have been several toy lines the last couple of years that I wish had been better; Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron (although that had some good stuff in it), Prince of Persia, A-Team, Avatar, Green Lantern...maybe one or two more I'm not thinking of.  Those lines had some decent stuff, vehicles from Avatar and Tron, okay role play (Tron, PotC) and likenesses (A-Team, PotC, PoP), but none had the whole package.

One thing I did like was the Hot Wheels Star Trek ships from 2009 and I'd love to see a line for a bunch of different shows and movies get that treatment.  A "Ships of the Future" line where we'd see stuff from Trek, Babylon 5, Stargate, Aliens...basically any property with cool starships.

I'd absolutely LOVE seeing STARCOM brought back.

Maybe the funnest toy line I ever had that wasn't a widely popular one like Star Wars or GI Joe.  STARCOM was just quietly awesome and highly underappreciated.  The kid from ALF had them too.  He was a dip****.

I'd love to see a line of 3.75" comic book figures other than DC/Marvel stuff.

I was interested in seeing a line of figures from Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic PC game from a while back; neat looking robots if you've never seen 'em. Cam probably search for 'starship titanic' and see what I'm talking about.

I'd like to see a really well done 3.75 inch DC line...

Maybe Back to the Future and Jurassic Park too. I'd KILL for a 3.75 inch Ian Malcolm to go along with some Indiana Jones figures.

Transformers Alternators/Binaltech.  A combo platter of the 80s versions of the 'bots with today's transformer sculpting and tech.  Masterpiece Optimus might be my favorite figure of all time.

There were some Jurassic Park figures based on GI Joe scultps for a proposed line for, I believe, Toys-R-Us, that didn't really go anywhere.  There have been some protos and finished figures showing up on eBay for the last few months.  There were a couple of AWE Striker repaints also.  I picked one of the figures up.  You may have seen it, shoulder and face tattoo with green web gear?  It's a pretty cool figure.

There are a couple versions of a BTTF Delorean in 1:18 scale out that are pretty cool.  Too bad they didn't do figures to go with it.

Battlestar Galactica '03. The DST figs are great, but I want Star Wars scale figures with vehicles and playsets!

Game of Thrones 3 3/4" figs based on the show. I wanna army build some Nights Watch rangers.

Three's Company 1:6 scale figures by Hot Toys. I want Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Terri and (most of all) Cindy! Larry, Furley, and a Ropers 2-pack would be nice too. ;D

Holy crap!  I posted this 9 years ago?

We got a bunch of Indiana Jones, so that's cool.

McFarlane has done some cool Predator stuff.

Toynami has done some cool Robotech stuff, including their masterpiece edition Veritechs.

As for Starship Troopers?  Eh.  Poor choice on my part in retrospect.

As for now?

GAME OF THRONES - Definitely lots of potential here for core characters and some army building.  I'd love to get some Stark forces, Lannister soldiers, Dothraki, Nights Watch and Wights.  But seeing how the show is so far removed from being oriented towards kids, this line would probably have to remain a dream.

HIGHLANDER - The first movie could probably yield about a dozen or so figures.  It would probably be best served by a company like McFarlane or NECA.

Highlander is an interesting choice.  I bet we see a remake of that flick a few years down the road.

That would be interesting to see done though it would be tough to have anyone but Queen do the soundtrack (and Clancy Brown as Kurgan).

We are seeing a remake, didn't you hear the news, they cast Ryan Reynolds in it.

And they did make a figure line for an animated version of Highlander back in the day, sometime in the mid '90s.

I'm surprised Hot Toys hasn't picked up a 1:6 license for the series, though.  There have been some 1:6 figures but they weren't that great.

That's actually a pretty good list.  I'd have loved to see some 3.75" Starship Troopers figures. The line we did get from Galoop mostly sucked on the figure side, but the vehicles and Action Flett/MicroMachine stuff was excellent.  I actually have pretty much the whole line except for 1 figure I think.

That's another movie I've seen rumors for...only this time the plan is to do a more faithful interpretation of the book, including the power suits and things like that.

What Line hasn't been made yet but you wish someday a manufacturer would pick up the license and run with it

The Goonies One of my favorite movies and would make for some neat figures

A 3 3/4" Trek line that doesn't suck.

3 3/4" Stargate line.

3 3/4" Stargate line. <-- that also doesn't suck

Fixed that for you...

There was a 3.75" line of Stargate figures for the movie but they were only about 5 POA and had the large, goofy, overly colorful accessories.  They used the AWE Striker for one of the vehicles IIRC also.

They weren't 3 3/4" (that would've made too much sense), more like 4 1/2",  they looked too big next to 3 3/4" figures.  I had the whole run via clearance sales.  The Awe Striker mold was modified to seat just one figure.

Watching Princess Mononoke tonight made me realize how much I'd love a 3.75" scale action figure line for it - Ashitaka, Yakul, San, the Wolves, Lady Eboshi, Jigo, and more.

Dammit Japan, you're really letting me down here.   :(
