Title: Black Series 40th Anniversary Vintage - Wave 1
Post by: Darby on January 18, 2017, 04:27 PM
I think there are enough signs pointing toward a vintage style 6 inch assortment with the original 12 figures in some capacity that really my only hope beyond the Jawa(s) being awesome is that there is some newness in the repeats. Like a Stormtrooper with the sculpt of the RO figure? Sure. Also seems like they're holding that RO Vader now for this assortment.

Reissues aren't anything new, so I can't say I'm shocked to see them possibly being mixed in with some new figures.  40th anniversary of the original added onto it, and this kinda makes more sense than not.

I am currently under embargo not to post pics, but since they are leaking on social media....  time for a thread!

Having seen them on the Twitter, they are exactly what I expected, so a little underwhelming in that way. I think I would have preferred the vintage 12 inch box set up as opposed to these giant cards. Contrary to what some *JTA* people have suggested, Leia does not have a revised head sculpt or paint job and these are straight repacks (Han, R2, Obi, Leia only seen so far).

I would have bet big money that this Leia was to have the new head sculpt with the better likeness.  But maybe that is a rumor about the new head sculpt?

The vintage cards are okay.  Kind of reminds me of the genial giants jumbo figures since they're huge!

Hasbro can't seem to get their images to jive with one another regarding her. The carded image looks like the same head we've gotten before but loose images look different/better. Who know what we're getting at this point?

Yeah, some dude over at RS was saying Leia for sure had a new head sculpt, but I don't see it from those Twitter pics.

The only ones I really want to see are the Jawas and DSC. And maybe the Tusken Raider.

The biggest difference I've seen outside of the cardbacks is that Han Solo doesn't come with the alternate Stormtrooper utility belt.

There was more incentive to buy that lame TRU exclusive Han & Greedo 2-pack than there is to buy this version of Han Solo.

I want to want these as I love the vintage packaging.

But I'll pick up the DSC, Jawa and Tuskens and be good.

I'm guessing $25 each?

Not just for the cardback

Hey Nick, I came across a pic just now and it looks like Han does come with the belt, he is wearing the stormtrooper belt along with his usual one.  I didn't catch it at first.  I was looking at his accessories first, the noticed it later... it kind of blends in even though they are two different colors.

That's what I'm thinking.  That recent survey was all about gauging how much they could charge collectors.  Sadly, I saw people in chat rooms claiming they would pay anything instead of saying $20 is a great price point.

Post by: Darby on February 18, 2017, 12:03 PM
I'm already not a completist on these and a price increase would result in me buying even less. I'm not particularly motivated to buy all of the vintage set just because I have nowhere to put them, they're not 3.75, and I have most of them. I will definitely be buying the Jawa (a few), the DS Commander, the Tusken, Obi-Wan, Leia and Vader assuming he's the new version. I'd be all for a Stormtrooper if he's gotten an upgrade. I reserve the right to crack later and buy them all but I'm thinking there's going to be a 3.75 vintage line as well and my focus will be there.

So the Leia does have a new head sculpt, and looks marginally better. The Jawa is great. Just need a six inch Sandcrawler now.  ;D

My 6" collection so far is pretty much just Han, Chewie, and whatever freebies Hasbro has sent me.  These carded figures are really tempting me to pick up a few others that I've previously skipped.

Really tempted for some reason now to get R2-D2, C-3PO, and Luke to go with my electronic SDCC Ben set...  also tempted to get that new Vader sculpt and new Leia sculpt just to round out the "main eight" from ANH.

Of course, knowing me, I'd have to get a couple Stormies to help Vader... then the doors would be wide open for more...  hmmm...    :-[

Weird that so much of Wave 1 is stuff that hasn't even shipped to big retail stores in its original form. I could see Leias and Obi Wans hanging on pegs in two different packages.

R2 is going to be the toughest figure to find but his rerelease should bring down prices on the secondary market.
Title: Re: Black Series 40th Anniversary Vintage - Wave 1
Post by: Nicklab on February 19, 2017, 12:03 PM
Wave 1 is kind of annoying.  At least from the standpoint of someone who's been collecting the 6" Black Series from the start.  Granted, this move seems intended to rope in carded collectors, and that's based purely on the packaging.

It does also help people who got in on the line a little late if they want to build up their own collection without paying some insane secondary market prices.  I'm tempted to pick up another R2-D2.  And if there's some significant improvement with the Leia face sculpt I may pick up that one.

I feel like they're giving the people who balked at 6" to begin with and then realized they were some pretty nice figs their chance to catch up

So Vader will not be available outside of the early bird set?

Is the regular boxed wave with the ERG and Hera supposed to hit before or after these things?

I figure Force Friday will launch with a new wave of TLJ themed figures. That means in the next 6 months they're going to have to squeeze in Two vintage waves, plus that wave I mentioned above. And then you have to consider the Baze/Chirrut wave, and for that matter the Revan wave which never hit retail outside of GameStop. That's five waves that would need to cycle through the pegs over the next 6 months. No freaking way!

Something is going to get squeezed out big time. Probably the Revan or Baze waves or even both. I just can't see all that stuff making it out to retail in that short time frame.
Title: Re: Black Series 40th Anniversary Vintage - Wave 1
Post by: Nicklab on February 20, 2017, 07:08 AM
Oh, s**t.  That was the sound of me getting over seeing 6" figures on nice looking vintage style cards, and snapping back to reality.

Like anyone else who got in on the 6" Black Series on the ground floor, I have EVERY SINGLE FIGURE in this first wave of 40AC figures.  If the face sculpt is truly fixed on Princess Leia?  I'll pick up another one on the 40AC cardback so that I'm not displaing the 2016 6" version of Monkey Faced Leia.

Wave 2 is interesting...but are we going to actually see it?  Because I'm wondering if we're going to wind up with a glut of wave 1 on the pegs because so many people have those already.  Granted, Leia and Obi-Wan had less time in rotation at retail, but that's besides the point.  We have seen some numerous lines launched with reissues, and people didn't buy them:  3.75" figures, vehicles, Action Fleet, etc.  There have been numerous instances where the first wave in a line being a reissue has held up new product from hitting the pegs.

It's almost like the definition of insanity:  repeating the same behavior time after time, while hoping for a different result.  Why does Hasbro think it's going to be different this time?  Do they think that vintage style cards are just magical and will make people forget they bought a $20 figure like Luke Skywalker JUST LAST YEAR?

***EDIT:  Amazon just listed wave 1 pre-orders.  Those are scheduled to be released on April 21st.

I'm a little curious about how this line is going to come out as well. Does it temporarily replace the regular Black Series, or is it its own line where we could see these ship alongside the Hera/ERG wave? Like it was mentioned, the Leia and Baze waves haven't really didn't make it to retail yet - and you would think that this has to be mostly through before Force Friday in September. If next year's Han Solo movie really does keep that May release it currently has, the Fall/Winter 17 push for the Last Jedi might be larger than what we saw for TFA. Not that they can't continue to release things, but the bulk would likely be pushed through by Christmas.

I've been wondering that a bit myself.  Because there's a whole lot of information swirling around.

-The Amazon listings for the 40AC wave 1 has an April 21st release date
-Lando, Qui-Gon, Hera and the ERG along with the AT-ACT Driver exclusive have all been shown in the red & black TFA Black Series packaging
-And the TLJ packaging theme just got revealed

It leaves me thinking that the 40AC will probably run alongside the final waves of TFA themed Black Series.  And we'll probably see a transition to the mainline packaging when TLJ launches.

The 40th stuff is running concurrent to the BS line, so this spring should see the 12 40th figs and also the next waves of Black Series, which should be Hera/Lando/etc. I assume the vintage cards will go all year and there will also be TLJ figs in the fall, both on vintage cards and in the standard box. Wave 2 is where all the fun is at so I'll order a set or a case depending. Wave 1 will be heavily ordered at retail and with the case pack going up to 8, I don't know. I really think either Vader or the trooper should have been in wave 1.

Case assortment according to Dorkside Toys: (http://www.dorksidetoys.com/Star-Wars-40th-Black-Series-6-Inch-Wave-1-Case-Pac-p/c1688as00.htm)

Luke x2
Obi-Wan x2
Leia x2
Han x1
R2 x1

So if you're looking for the harder to find figures, good luck.

Only one R2?  You'd think they would go with only one Obi, since he's recently released on regular packaging AND had a SDCC release.  I guess we'll be seeing lots of peg warmers blocking the way for wave 2...
Title: Re: Black Series 40th Anniversary Vintage - Wave 1

Yeah, the three most recent releases get the 2x per case and the one that you can actually display two ways (Han) and the one that is HUGE on ebay get 1x per case.  Makes sense.   :-X

I have seen this question asked and answered, but I'll just confirm what Darby said-
The 40th stuff is running concurrent to the BS line, so this spring should see the 12 40th figs and also the next waves of Black Series, which should be Hera/Lando/etc.

This is what I have heard as well - should ship alongside each other.  Ad it sounds like all the 'new' 40th figures (DS Trooper, Jawa, Vader) should get regular box release eventually as well.

I'd say it's likely that New Headsculpt Leia will only be on the Vintage cards as she's already been in the red/black box.  I suppose if she gets repacked in a future case, you might see it, but probably not likely?

Looking at some of the in-hand pictures that have surfaced, the headsculpt (or at least the paint apps) on this version of Leia are an immense improvement.

I'm personally divided about these new 40th Anniversary figures...  I do like the look of the carded figures, but since I've been collecting the Black Series 6" figures since the beginning, I have all of these figures, save the newest ones like the Tusken Raider, Jawa, etc.  I have Luke, Leia, Han, R2D2, C3PO, Vader, Stormtroopers, etc.  Do I get a set of the vintage carded figures or just stick with what I have?  I'm tempted just to stick with what I have, though I'll probably get another Han and of course the new-tooling figures  ;)

I know it will depend on sales and all that, but I wonder if they will continue this vintage "line look" beyond the original 12. I guess we've already seen the exclusive X-Wing Luke and R5-D4, so maybe they'll continue up to the first 21? That would involve a few more new figures. In the past we started out with the VOTC line and VTSC lines which were pretty limited in releases, then the TVC line came along and blew things up.

I'm thinking it will continue to the end of the year and encompass more vintage and probably TLJ as well.

I had to hit up two different Targets and do some fancy talking, but I finally was able to snag all of Vintage Wave One plus the Vader set today after I got off work.  :)

The first store only had Han, Luke and Leia left, but at the second store I was able to sift through a whole fresh case. That was pretty sweet. Best of all, I was able to throw in a couple of extra AT-ACT drivers to take advantage of both the $10 and $25 discounts. (Can always return those later on previous receipts)

So basically five figures plus the Legacy pack for $105 wasn't too terrible. I wasn't planning to buy these at first but I'm going to jump in as long as it is a very limited run. 12 or even 21 I can deal with but any more than that and I'd have to seriously rethink the whole thing. Just no space.

I opened my display stand that came with the Darth Vader figure this morning, and really like it.  I wish Hasbro would do more of this stuff, and for 3.75" figures as well.  Maybe they do pack-ins like this or mail-away deals, but it would be cool to do a new background (and maybe base) for each movie release, or at least periodically.

Nice work Hasbro!

Looks like Best Buy stores are offering at least the Darth Vader (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hasbro-star-wars-the-black-series-40th-anniversary-darth-vader-multi/5766807.p?skuId=5766807) display pack.  Their web site says most of my local stores have this available.

Target seems to be a little spotty in their rollout of this, so if you can't find this you might want to check Best Buy.

The shipper at Gamestop apparently has the Vader & Stand in there as well, though it's $45 versus the $40 elsewhere.

Apparently Walmart has no plans to carry these? I've seen a few remnants at Target and GameStop, and a lone Obi at TRU once. It's like every store that got these only got one case each and that's it. Weird rollout.

Is that confirmed?  I thought Walmart just hadn't reset with them yet.  They've only been out a week or two.

I think it's sarcasm, Jman.

Yeah, sorry, they just seem behind the curve is all I meant. Although who knows, nothing would surprise me anymore. None of the Wallys around here have ordered any new 6" figures in months. I check Brickseek every few days just to see.

Do we know if Target is going to just have these on the endcap and are they going to sell the Titanium figs?

I opened my display stand that came with the Darth Vader figure this morning, and really like it.  I wish Hasbro would do more of this stuff, and for 3.75" figures as well.  Maybe they do pack-ins like this or mail-away deals, but it would be cool to do a new background (and maybe base) for each movie release, or at least periodically.

Nice work Hasbro!

Dave,
What is the measurement on the size of the display? I'm still wondering if I have space for this.

I'm trying really hard to not make a "that's what she said" out of this...

I got Han and R2 at a Wally that really doesn't carry much in the way of toys compared to other Wallys.  So, debunked.

Cool! Did they have the Vader set too?

I've heard May 1 or May 4 as dates Walmart is setting stuff out. But it's Walmart, where the May 4 stuff last year (4 inch Phasma/Han/Leia) didn't get stocked here until January.

I did not see the Vader set.  I got mine at Target a week or so ago.

This wave is now out of production according to Yakface, so good luck getting those Hans and R2s!
