Title: What do you do (job, student)?
Post by: JediMAC on January 13, 2003, 03:02 PM
Just curious what all you Jedi Defender forum surfers out there do in the real world in terms of your profession...

As for me, I do Music Royalties Auditing.  I work for a firm that specializes in auditing the major record companies (Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., Capitol, EMI, etc.) on behalf of many of your favorite singers, bands, songwriters, and musicians.  Basically, we just scope out the record company's books, find all of the money that they're hiding or have just underpaid to the respective artist, put a report together with our findings, submit it, and get the artist a FAT chunk of change in settlement compensation (as if they're not all rich enough already - but who's counting).

We haven't done anything Star Wars related yet, but we were in negotiations to pick up John Williams as one of our clients last year, and it seemed to be a done deal, but I believe things fell through at the very last minute - likely due to the already huge backlog of work that we had at the time.  Though it hasn't come to fruition yet, from what I've heard, the partners at my firm are still trying to work out a deal with his people.  Now that would be totally sweet if I could audit his stuff!  Talk about some job satisfaction...

So if any of you know someone in the music business, and/or who's had a record hit the Billboard charts and wants to get back some of what is rightfully theirs, give me a shout!

What kind of student are you BobaShek (what level)?  High School, college, graduate?  If one of the latter two, what's your major and what school do you attend?

Good luck on your midterms!

I work full-time as a grocery store manager, which is always interesting.  I work the night shift, so I work with all teenagers.  They are all very entertaining.
Then, I take pictures in my spare time.  I do weddings and senior portraits. I like to keep myself busy.

I just threw away all of my High School Physics notes...aw good times ;)

I am a Chemical Engineer.  I work for some pretty big Chemical Companies as a Consultant..  My company designs Chemical Process systems which go into plants which make intermediaries which are then used to make final products at packaging facilities.  My job entails designing and specifying the components that go into the systems...pumps, reactors, tanks, piping and instrumentation, valves, gauges

If you have seen Robocop where the dude gets eaten by acid...that basically where our stuff goes.  I work with some of the deadliest acids on the planet and so making sure everything is chemically compatible and propely sized and functions right is critical.  I love my job, it is fun and a challenge every day.  There has been a huge slowdown in the Chemical processing community in the US in general the last 4 years so if I continue to do this forever is the real question.

The nice thing is having a ChemE degree means I can work for a ton of different industires...Food, Pharmacuetical, Pulp/Paper, Petroleum, Power Plants etc etc

Nothing lowly about it BobaShek!  Some of us old farts 'round here would give our left n*t to go back in time and spend a few days in the tenth grade again.  Those were some good times back then!  Enjoy it while you can - 'cause the "real world" and all of its mind boggling responsibilities awaits you a few years down the road...

Of course, you could always stretch out your college career for a good 8 or 9 years like I did, and it should make things much funner and easier for you.  Until you meet your wife that is, and she starts asking about your career, finances, etc.  Hmmm, bad advice I'm giving you.  Maybe you should just GET BACK TO YOUR STUDIES, so you can better support that future family of yours!!!   Well, what are you waiting for...???  Chop, chop!   ;)

I'm a college student and work at a grocery store.
I haven't decided on a major yet, not sure what I want to pick but I need to soon (been there to long 5 years :o ).
As my job I used to be a courtesy clerk bagging your groceries, getting carts, and being the goppher of the store (do this do that).  In November I started doing Trash which basically means I picvk up after nightcrew (boxes and stuff they leave on the floors at 4 am) and just last week I became one the liqour clerk and doing misc. things before our store opens.  The only thing that sucks is the hours 12am, 1 am, 2 am, and 4 am each morning almost.

Well I do computers and photography. I've worked the past 5 years in the computer dept/helpdesk for the largest jeans maker (hint*NOT levis) but we're gettingl ayed off in May so they can give our jobs to an Indian (as in India) computer company "to save money".
But I do all kinds of computer hardware/software installs, upgrades, fixes etc.
And I am a photographer, I do weddings, portrait shots, if you need a picture -  I have the camera!

Great topic and really nice to know everyone here a little better.

As for me, I work as a producer at one of the larger videogame publishers - not EA big, but we produce and publish lots of titles that are recognizable, and some actually don't suck.

My day consists of interfacing with programmers, artists, and designers on the day-to-day tasks of building games for Xbox, PS2, and Gameboy Advance. It's partly creative, with input on design, story, and art direction, but also includes plenty of tracking of assets from film companies, contracts, budgets, and internal politics. Right now I'm working on a kid's game based on a new Mike Meyers movie and a street racing title with a company in Japan, also based on a movie.

The street racing title is going to have lots of music from known recording artists in it. Maybe one day JediMAC and I will have issues, and I can say:

"Obviously, we can not settle this with our knowledge of contracts, but with our skills... with a LIGHTSABER."
 :)

Just watch it there with those music royalties bub!  We've been known to go after some of those video game titles in our artist audits before...

Though I must admit that my company has never settled any music royalty discrepancies through the use of a lightsaber though.  Interesting idea...  I'll have to run it by the partners here, as it may just speed up a few of our settlement processes!   ;)

I can tell you that the Jedi mind trick has unfortunately never worked on any record company folks before though...  :(

Where to begin here.  I recently terminated my employment with Global Computer Supplies (http://www.globalcomputer.com), and was an Account Executive (basically a sales rep).  So, I'm currently unemployed and searching for a job.  I worked at Global Computer for 2 years.  Ever since 9/11 the spending for companies has drastically decreased, which also killed my commissions.  Wasn't making a whole lot of money there since then.

Before that I was a Network Administrator for Citibank in Chicago, and prior to that was a Lotus Notes Certified Professional for McDonalds' headquarters in the Chicago burbs.  Also did helpdesk/phone support there too.

But for now, I'm trying to find a good job doing just about anything.  Graduated with a B.A. in Journalims (TV background), but have failed trying to find a job in that field.  Would love to get back into that though (been about 7 years since I graduated from college).

Anyone hiring in the Chicagoland area???  LOL!   :P

I bet that's an awesome job!  For the last months I've been wanting to become a police officer.  Unfortunately the city I live in has one job requirement to become one... you must possess a Criminal Justice or Criminology degree.  That's something I don't have.   :(

Yeah.....being a cop kicks mega @$$!!!  I love it!  I wouldn't want to do anything else.  The job is different every day and that is what I love about it.   Try moving to another city (I know....easier said that done).  But some cities don't require a degree.  You can get that later with tuition assistance from your department.   :)

I work in brodacast television as an Editor.  I also work on feeds coming in from remote locations where we have news crews.

I piece the material together so that it makes sense to the viewer at home.  It can get kind of hectic, like during the war, but it's rewarding in that you're providing a service to the community.

I'm in business for myself, with my girlfriend. I'm an Auto Accessories Recycler.

Basically what I do is make runs to auto salvage yards, run in with a fistfull of money, and walk out with some high dollar parts.

i.e. I invested $100 1 week and made a $600 profit.  ;D

It's alot of fun, it pays all my bills, I set my own hours, I am never late for work, I can;t get fired, and I get to be my own boss!

Which pays better?  What type of schooling or experience is necessary to get into the Monkey Wrangling business?  And is the Gigalo gig more like what was in Richard Gere's American Gigolo movie, or more like SNL's Rob Schneider's Deuce Bigalow flick?

That's very cool Cory!  Wish I could set something up like that...  My job is often not very fun, doesn't pay enough of my bills, often lasts me a good 12+ hours a day, I'm ALWAYS late to work, I can get fired (though I doubt that would happen), and my boss is often a totally reprehensible PRICK!   >:(

Yeah, auto part salvaging is looking mighty fine to me right now too!!!   8)

Cool topic. Always nice to see what other collectors do for a living.

I have a Sub Contracting buisness. I specialize in Epoxy
and Urethane Waterproofing coatings. Mainly Parkades with some Wharehouse work. In the buisness we call it "membrane", hence my user name... ;D

I also dabble in Concrete restoration. We remove old
broken, wornout, concrete from parkades and replace
it with new.  It's a never ending cycle here due to the
Salt used in the winter. It corrodes the concrete in no time.

I've been in this buisness going on 20 years. I'm at the point now that I just supervise my guys and only get in the "dirt" when my knowlege and expertise is needed.
But this still means long days as the working "outdoor"
season here is short so we have to get as much done in a relatively short period of time.

Plus my wife works me like a dog when I'm at home, LOL

I'm a first year law student.  I haven't decided what kind of law I'm going to specialize in yet.  I'm leaning to sports and/or entertainment law.  I wasn't smart enough to pick a useful major in undergrad, so I pretty much had to go to grad school

In addition, I work as a clerk/courier for a local law firm.  Its a pretty easy job.  For the most part I just make copies and delivery papers to court.  Boring, but its good experience

I am a support tech for a wireless company.  I used to drive around in a truck testing the network, which I loved, sortof like the Candian version of the Verizon guy. "Can you hear me now eh?".

Now I sit at a desk in our NOC (Network Operations Center) which I hate.  Mainly because I am not in the field, it is a LOT more stressful, no extra money, office politics sucks, and people blame me for stuff that isn't my fault.. all day long!

Other than that its a good company with kick ass benifits, which is a major reason I put up with all the crap.  Having 2 little kids would be expensive if I had to pay for all those prescriptions, dental work etc. etc.!

What's the toy/pack-in for an adult Happy Meal? When I was a kid, that was pretty much the only reason I'd want one. What's the big draw for an adult Happy Meal? Whoops, forgot I'm posting on a toy-collecting site.  :P

Getting back to the topic, I'm an editor for a chemical research company. The "Toy" for the adult happy meals is a step counter (I'm not sure what its actually called) that you place on you and it counts how many steps you take in the day.

Also to add to what my job is I'm still working in the gocery store but now work as a Sales Specialist which pays me more then my current job as a Courtesy Clerk which I went back to after a few weeks of on my previous post in this thread.  The hours are a lot better then working nights as will.

I work in the art department of a visual effects/animation studio in Dallas.  We do lots of commercial work, and lots of work with Hasbro.  We're about to wrap production on the full length GI Joe movie Valor Vs. Venom.

I started there a year ago as a lowly intern working for free, but am now on a 1 year contract and have gotten a chance to learn and start working my way up.   Now I'm working more hands on in preproduction work for commercials, making animatics, etc...In july I'll be running outpost editing on....ready for this...

Three Star Wars commercials.

Eventually I hope to learn a lot of editing, compositing and visual effects.

I was interested in starting a thread like this - just curious to know what everyone does when they're not collecting.  It's neat to see such a wide range of jobs and studies that are somehow linked by an interest in Star Wars toys.

I'm a pharmacist.  Yup, professional drug dealer.  You want some good stuff, come to me.   ;)

I will have been doing this for 3 years as of May this year.  I'm currently working in an Extra Foods, which is a member company of the Loblaws/Westfair corporation in Canada.  My job is usually slower than what most pharmacists endure because we are a quieter store.  There are 3 pharmacies in my town of 5000, and 2 of them are located within 1/2 a block of the only medical clinic in town.  On the other hand, we are located on the outskirts of town, so most people use the other pharmacies simply out of convenience.

The pay is good and my hours are flexible.  These are the 2 main reasons for me doing this job because I only work 24 hours a week and spend the rest of my time at home with my 3 year old daughter.  She is my reason for being!   :)

Do I like my work?  Not really, a lot of people still have the mentality that a pharmacy is no different than a fast food joint, but I better digress.  However, it pays the bills and my manager is flexible with switching hours.

It took me 8 years of schooling to get here, 4 years of my B.Sc. studies in Biochemistry and then another 4 to complete my B.S.P.  My original plan was to use my Biochemistry degree to work in the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) forensics lab, but they've been downsizing the last few years.  So I realized that my first degree wasn't going to get what I wanted, and decided that Pharmacy what be an adequate way to use some of my education.  And here I am.

Would anyone else like to enlighten us?  (But without rambling on nearly as long as I did  ::))

Oh man.... where do I begin?

I work full time in a mom & pop electronics store as the assistant manager/movies & music buyer. I also tend bar when I have some free time at a bar that one of my friends works at. I have a small home based business where I do website design and programming (mostly Java, since I'm a certified Java Developer), as well as some freelance design work for a few different firms. I'm also a "working" musician, in the sense that I have a band that is doing some recording for a record label currently, and we are doing some live shows on a semi-regular basis - and getting paid for it.

I also take some classes in computer programming/new media design at the local community college. But I skipped last semester due to lack of time (geez, I've only got 4 jobs  ::) ) and I'll probably skip the upcoming one as well.

Sweet.
I got some after I injured my elbow once, and I liked the feeling.

I work for a caibnet manufacturer. I build doors, cut mitered parts, and tell people what to do. Pretty good for blue-collar work, but it's teaching me that I should really quit and go to school.  Or pull a road-scholar thing. That'd be great.

Job is the same, company is different.  Working on a wider variety of projects now.  Old company was pretty much hotels, dorms and apartment buildings.   New company is a little bit of everything.  Hotels, office buildings, lab space, hospitals, etc.

jokabofe,

You just got four jobs man...what is wrong with you lazy blood clot!
Remember In Living Colour, you got a lot of jobs ;D bud!

I am shoulder high in corporate America.  I am an operations manager for the largest independent mortgage / financial company with a little over 30K employees.  I manage two groups of 10 employees and we are in the business of client relations / vendor management.

Best part about it was I bought a house in AZ and within two weeks was advised that my company was moving to the same state in fact 30 min. from my house.  To boot, I was recently promoted to my current position.

I finished my degree and went to OTS in 2002 with a change in jobs to Space and Missile Officer.  I'm in the 3rd year of my 4 year missile tour and hoping to do some work with satellites next, hopefully with the GPS constellation.  I'm currently a 1st Lt and next month I'll be promoted to Captain.

Fun job Matt.  Do you get to spend days on end with the SP's down in the silo's?  I never got the "joy" of missile field duty, but I did spend quiet a bit of time watching fighters sit on the flightline and checking ID's at the front gate.

Anyway, I teach 8th grade US History.  This is my 6th year doing that and for the most part I love it even though I'm beat at the end of the day.

Full-time at an insurance company, running a paper inserting machine for checks and claims.  Part-time at a major newpaper making plates to run on the presses.  And full-time father and husband.  Good thing about the insurance company is i'm all by myself and as long as the machinery is running properly i have time for myself to read, customize SW figures, or play on the internet.

I work on the Xbox, where I like to think I'm helping to make small children fat and lazy every day. It's my little contribution to society, which I've been trying to keep up since I was a pizza delivery guy many years ago.  As for the video game industry, it's different than several IT companies I've worked for in the past, but it's still actual work.  When I'm bragging, I like to tell people that I got tired of not being paid to play games for a living so I remedied that by moving to a job where I can.  In reality, most of my work still takes place on computers. ;D

In the Tamidala spirit, I suppose I'm also a chauffer, lawn boy, Kozmo.com delivery guy, handyman and dispenser of hugs and kisses for my bride.  ;D

Bumping up this old relic...

I currently work full time at a retail store as a peon(for one of the shittiest companies I have ever seen), despite the fact that I have a bachelor's degree. In addition to that, I also go to film school full time and work part time at the film school. with school I'm constantly working on my own projects and helping out other students with theirs. I haven't had a Saturday off since the beginning of August. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are all 14 hour days for me. And on top of all of that I've been trying to plan my wedding. I've been doing all of this since August. Several times within the past month my work has basically told me that my schedule is no longer going to work with them and that I'd either need to go part time, drop out of school, or that I wouldn't be able to work there anymore. They have been giving me about the worst possible schedule that they can. Anything less than full time there and my girlfriend and I can't pay rent/bills. I've been working at this company for two and a half years.

I've been looking for other work for a while now, but because I'm now in school all day Mondays and Wednesdays and really need an additional day off for filming/mental sanity during the week most regular companies won't hire me. Fun.  :-X >:(
