Please God, tell me those are not two new Toy Fair exclusive figures (Anakin & Vader) that GH just put up...   :'(

EDIT:  I see Jared's way ahead of me...

Yep, I think that's exactly what they are.  TWO, no less.  This is gonna be REALLY BAD if it's true.  Bad way to start off the ROTS run.  Dumb Hasbro.

Just saw that side shot, too. That's a sweet little package and cool idea with the rotating figures. I'm not at all pleased.

Can't wait to do one of the following:

A) Not get it at all because its a Toy Fair press kit.
B) Go through hell and hope to be lucky enough to get it through a fumbled SWS sale.
C) Pay a fortune on ebay.

Yeah, we're ******.

What do you mean by rotating figures Jared?  Aren't they two entirely different packages altogether?  That's what it looks like to me, and I DON'T think that's a fun idea.  Tracking one Press Kit down is gonna be challenging enough.  Two?  Most likely impossible (within financial reason).  Argh!

And I don't think this is gonna be a situation like the Toy Fair Vader figure a few years back, since that was just a carded figure that could be resold by SWS.com.

But these are official Press Kits, so I don't think anyone's gonna be offering these things up anywhere.

Basically, this is gonna wind up being akin to the Holiday Sandtrooper bust that GG gave out recently.  They're "not for the general public", so if you want one, you better expect to pay TOP DOLLAR for the few that pop up on eBay - or learn to live without it.

Bummer.  Big bummer.

I'm not sure, but i get the impression from the thickness of the press kit that both figures are there, one on each side.   ???

That was actually one of my initial thoughts too, Jesse.  But I changed my mind, since that would mean the thing would have to be flipped on it's side for the opposite figure/cover, since the Vader side runs horizontal, and the Anakin side is vertical.

Hopefully you're right and that's indeed the case.  Makes one less headache for me!

It's one package, with a cover flap that has a hinge attached to it that reveals Vader as you pull the flap open. Look at the black plastic hinge on the inside front left cover. One package. Anakin with flap closed, Vader with flap open.

Yes, it's a press kit.  No, the figures are not unique.  They're the first Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader from the ROTS line.

And in case anyone cares, I put some pics of the Press Kit that was given out today up on the main page.

Great pics Dave - they confirm how the kit works too - pretty neat idea - would love it if they sold the extras (if there are any) via starwarsshop.com, like they did with the Vader a couple of years ago...

Since it's an actual Press Kit and not just a figure, I would have to say they most likely will not be selling any extras. Although I guess you could always keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Besides, if SWS.com got a bunch of extras and tried to sell them via their site, it would be a disaster.

Word is that there were about 60, and that's it.  The figures are far from unique.

All the more reason I'd expect them to do it. This is going to be a sore point no matter what they do. Either way, there's going to be collector uproar about this thing.

You're probably right - the Toy Fair Vader turned into a nightmare for all except for those who ordered first thing when it went up on the WOTC Fan Club store.

Since the figures aren't unique, it's really not that big of a deal. In the Star Trek collector community - there is a similar piece that was put out the same year that Star Trek: First Contact came out in theaters - it was a Borg figure mounted to a tri-fold piece of cardboard - it's purpose was to hype the fact that (a) the Borg were coming to the big screen and (b) Playmates was making toys for it. It is probably one of maybe a handfull other Playmates Trek pieces that still have any considerable value.

Well my take on it is this.  It's a nice piece, but to bad so sad.  That thing is not worth $2000.  LOL!  Basically you are paying for the cardboard and the spinning feature.  I can certainly live without this thing in my collection.  I may even end up skipping that Anakin figure in the regular line.

That $2,000 nutjob aside, it looks like we've got our first real indicator as to what the market value's gonna be on the Press Kit, as there's another one up on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2476&item=5958575156&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) now, sitting at $600 with 13 bids and 6 days remaining.  Hell, at that pace, $2,000 isn't too far a stretch...   :-\

Nice Vader pix Dave.  I agree, that suddenly looks a lot better than the rest of the Vader shots I've seen.  Very nice.

Now see, what I don't get is...we'll, my take is this:

If I get this press kit, and it's the SAME figure coming out in like, a month, sure that sucker is headed for ebay, but I'd put a BIN or somthing too, to make it fair. I mean, folks, it's the same figure that you can get in a month or two in a new sodding box. The end. Yeah, for completists it sucks...but...

Wow...

That is a cool looking Press Kit, makes me a little upset, but if the figures are exactly the same I guess I can pass.  The Toy Fair Vader was such a striking figure with nifty packaging (like a basic figure) that I felt I "needed" one.

Since this thing really isn't on a "basic figure" type card, I guess I can hapily pass and not need one.  Of course, if they do offer them from SWS.com or another source, you can bet your bippy I'll buy one.   :-[

The problem with these Toy Fair and Celebration figs is that they really are not a part of the lineup for the general public.  I would not think these things would really count if you are a completist.  But that's me.

It's not like many people even know stuff like Toy Fair even exists.  At least the figures on this set are going to be available on April 2nd.

I think us carded collectors all have different definitions of "complete". I've become more interested in offshoot items like this and consider it a part of the line by my personal definition - basically if Hasbro made it, distributed it, and people outside of their offices received them, it's a legitimate item of interest.

I'm definitely interested in it because of the packaging. The figures aren't even a concern. I'm bothered by its instant status as a holy grail item. It's not something I really wanted to deal with during the onslaught of new product this year, and will be a thorn in my side and a hole in the collection for some time, I'm sure.

I'd like to see them offer the same package design, minus the press kit moniker, for a fan release. That way the TF originals hold their value and significance for the folks that received them, and it would do enough to placate completists like me. If they could offer something in the spirit of this, I'd be cool with it.

Ditto.

Yeah, "complete" is all in the eye of the beholder.  Obviously this would probably not even fall under the "needs" list of most carded completists.  But if you get into the "packaging completists", including the real sickos like Jared and I, then yeah, it'd unfortunately be a part of the greater whole to us.  It's rather like some other exclusives like the Mexican Convention Encuentras 2-pack, and things like that.  Not a part of the "regular line intended for retail consumers", but there is a figure in a unique type of packaging there, so it warrants hitting our radar.

It's pretty much exactly like that Gold/Silver Sandtrooper bust that GG put out a couple months ago.  That piece was quite devisive over in the 'Scum forums, as half the folks said it wasn't a part of the regular line, and the other half said they didn't care and they needed the item to stay "complete" with their Bust collection.

Tricky little subject "complete" can be.  One I'm forced to deal with quite often (in my own noggin), unfortunately...

It is a cool piece. I am willing to fork over $500 bucks for it. I can't justify $500, but I really can't justify $1000 for a little bit of cardboard, 2 figures, and some writting.

Yeah, I was kinda wondering what your breaking point might be on that thing Dave.  Man, that's tough.  Hell, as bad as I want to get my hands on one of those things, if someone offered me a grand for something I got for free...  Ugh.  Tough decision.

I think I'd likely still hang onto it though.  As long as Patty didn't find out, in which case that thing would be sold fast as lightning.  We were going through my old baseball card collection from the 50's and 60's this weekend, and when I told her what that stuff was worth, she immediately demanded we sell it, since I haven't really been into that hobby for the past decade.  I told her NO WAY.  No amount of money (well, no amount of money less than 6 figures anyway  ;)) was going to get me to part with that stuff.

There is a LOT of other stuff I'd spend one grand on before I spend it on this press kit.  No way I could ever justify spending that much for something like this, unless I wonder the lottery or something.

$1000 is just unbelievable.  Granted, it is a cool collectible, and I'd like to have one too, but like Jeff mentioned, I would never spend that money on something like that unless I won the lottery or something.  I think I'd have a tough time not selling it too, if I could get $1000 for something I got for free.  It would be neat to keep and have, but $1000 can buy a lot of stuff :).

I totally can relate to what Matt is saying here - it all comes down to how you define "complete" with regards to what you collect. Personally, I'm like Matt as well, where I view things like the Mexican and German convention pieces as unique packaging items that I need regardless of the fact that the figures inside are the same as their individually carded counterparts.

The hard part for me sometimes is having to resign myself to never being able to get a certain item and just "letting go" of any angst associated with not having it in my collection. OCD is such a wonderful combination with action figure collecting!  ;D

I think Dave should sell his and he's nuts if he doesn't.  I'm sorry, but $3K for nada?  Who the hell cares?

So I guess I'm nuts, huh?  Sorry, not parting with mine.  Don't want to be that guy, and lose friends over it.

Based on what Philip's saying, there's more of these on the way, hence the price will be going down.  So for 3 G's, you guys could sell it now, and just buy a much cheaper one later on, and pocket the whopping difference.

I know Dave's starting to think about it...   ;)

Yeah Nick, I think you're nuts.  Not being mean, but three grand?  Anyone that would get mad at you for selling it probably isn't really a friend either.  Especially after what Matt said.  You're better hooked in than most, so your odds of getting another are good.  I certainly wouldn't bear you any ill will for selling.

I do respect your ability to resist temptation though.  It's a nice piece, but I don't have any toy that's worth three grand and I doubt I ever would.
