Title: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: DSJ™ on August 31, 2003, 12:40 AM
I have been watching a lot of customs on eBay latley. Whether it be carded, 12" or dioramas, these customs seem to go for a lot of money & I think sometimes bidders get trapped by not reading the description that it is a custom. Here are some examples:

 Vintage Stormtrooper & custom card (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3143316351&category=2475&rd=1)   :o

Custom Bespin "Dinner with Vader" (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3142983994&category=2476)  Figures not included!   ::)

3 Custom Star Wars Clone Trooper figures  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3142863106&category=2476)   ???

Here's another one I just found:

Boba Fett Droids card moc CUSTOM (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3142987160&category=2475)

Now I can understand the custom Bespin room has a lot of work that has gone into it, but that Stormtrooper takes the cake! Is it because some people can't afford the real Mccoy or am I missing something here?

I don't know either, I have noticed it in the past as well... I honestly think the seller of the stormtrooper has friends shill bidding for him,  reason I feel this way is because I put two very nice Custom Carded Vintage Figures priced at a real good price.  They didn't get a single bid.

Luke Jedi Clicky (http://valtarzcustomzartz.com/Sale/Lukesale.html)

Snowtrooper Clicky (http://valtarzcustomzartz.com/Sale/Snowtrooper.html)

As you can see the Cards are custom designed ... everything else though is Vintage including all accessorys, heh... maybe no one liked them, I don't know but, for someone to get a figure that high on a repro card I would have to say Shill bidding.

Oh and if you guys dont want me linking the two custom carded Figures I had done feel free to remove them I was just showing them as a example.

these auctions are one of the reasons i'm against selling customs. some of these people not only are scamming someone (especially the clonetrooper one, $33 for 3 red clones repainted? I just bought 3 at kb for $6 total!) but because of the scamming they are giving the customizing community a bad name. people have an inherent ability to link one person to an entire group and thats what happens often in these situations. there are many who sell their customs because they need to make money and while I reckon thats a bit more understandable, if they arent good customizers they are selling garbage (the clonetroopers again) to people who could have made the customs themselves for a lot less. then you have the whole vintage repro issue, couldnt people tell that the stormtrooper wasnt in the best condition anyways? sheesh a fool and their money... ok enough ranting now  ;D
Title: Re: Custom Figures & eBay!
Post by: DSJ™ on August 31, 2003, 02:28 AM
I completely agree on the Clonetroopers. Buy them cheap & do a custom youesrelf. Maybe some people are just plain lazy!  :-\

Now its hard to say if it is shill bidding at this time though it does look like its heading that way.
Here's on that user 435888 won:  Boba Fett MOC (21 Back) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3143125166)

Notice that he is from Australia & so is the seller. Even the Stormtropper auction is from Australia so it may lead that way. Need more time to watch there selling & buying.

But unlike the Sormtrooper auction, 435888 bid first 5 days before the next bidder came in & tried to get to be the higher bidder & just gave up. If he's a shill bidder trying to bid first hoping to get an unsuspecting bidder to come in & pass the high bid, looks like this did not work.

Bidder History (http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=3143316351)

Heck, I even have a cd I bought for custom cardbacks. Just buy one of those or look on the net & find the sites that post customs cardbacks & make your own.
Like you said:

a fool and their money...

Ditto!  ;)

Well, this guy does the Custom Card backs all the time and by the time they go off they fetch a high price all around, I dont know if he shill bids but He keeps the repro Cards up all the time. needless to say he also uses repro weapons in his custom carded Figures.

VINTAGE C9 DOUBLE TELESCOPIC VADER ON 12 B  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3144072710&category=2475)

As far as the Clone troopers go I just think that the bidders are lazy and will pay for someone to do it for them.  I know if I see a super looking custom that I never tried to make, but wished I had I may put a $20 to $30 bid on them,  just to have it,  that is really rare but it could happen if I see something I really like.

I've never bought a custom off of anyone before, but if I were to buy a custom it sure wouldn't be off eBay.  I would rather buy one off someone who has a good name for themselves... a reputable customizer.  Someone who has really put a lot of sweat and tears into their work.  Yeah, there are some really good customs on eBay, but you really don't know what kind of work they've done on it or what the quality is on their final product.

That "Dinner with Vader" is awesome though!  It's a bit steep though IMO.   :o

I love E-bay !!! It's the essence of free enterprize !! The Wild, Wild West of Cyberspace, but you need to do your homework and know what your doing or you can get ripped off "Buyer Beware" you know !!! ;)

The only custom I've bought was a Motti painted Black !! I looked real cool and w/shipping cost me $5 !!!

Everyone complains about Scalpers, but you only get scalped if you allow your self to !! So people want to complain they can't get the figures they want cuz the "Scalpers" are cleaning the pegs !! I think it's more a distribution problem than Scalpers !!

I look for older loose Items that would be harder to find if it weren't for E-bay !!!

Good deals are out there, but you got to have Patience !!!! ;D

We're way ahead of ya'! (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=7142.msg136542#msg136542)  ;)  Yep, that things an absolute beauty.  Breathtaking.  Over 7 feet long, and 4 feet wide.  Already sitting at $2,500 with almost 4 days to go.  Should be interesting to see where it finally ends...

BTW, is this the same guy who had the amazing Sail Barge up on eBay a year or two ago?  I recall him being somewhere down in South America too (this guy's in Chile)...

And welcome to JediDefender!  8)

Yeah, welcome aboard to JD...  Amazing you posted your first post about this.  You should go introduce yourself in the introductions forum....

A very nice Destroyer that's being talked about...  Not $2500 nice to me...  But a lot of work went into it for sure.  I'd dig building one myself but nowhere to display anything that big for certain.

If I were a rich man, I would bid on it and try to find some way to win it.  But I am not a rich man, so I will instead become depressed over this.   :)

PNL33, we all know now that you are the seller.  People over at rebelscum are pretty aggravated at you for posting it to try and act like one of the customizing community while your real intent is to up the price... I understand where you are coming from, and you did an unbelievable job on this... but I don't like the fact that you'd only post here to promote yourself financially.

I was looking for customs on ebay last night to get ideas as well and I saw some really neat Lego minifig customs, like this Kit Fisto

Kit Fisto (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19009&item=5984550776&rd=1)

I saw one without a hood too, but I couldn't find it again. ::)

These Jawas are pretty cool too.

No CuDa, the fact that:

A) He posted pretending to have "found" it on ebay.

B) Not having the courage to say "Here's my custom that also happens to be on ebay. I thought you customizers would like a look." and possibly ad some insight.

Neither of us said anything to start a fight.

If you'd like to discuss this further, feel free to PM myself or CHEWIE if you have any more problems with what we said.

Settle down folks.  Here's the deal:  Posting links to your own auctions, whether they're kickass customs or some dumb Hasbro figure, is against the rules here at JD (as it is at every other Star Wars collecting forum).  So in that respect, yes, what this guy did WAS wrong.

BUT, we figured out the seller and poster here were most likely one and the same last night, but decided to bend the rules just a little and let this one slide due to the sheer brilliance of the work.  I'm going to go ahead and remove the actual auction link above though, but feel free to post more pix of it in here if you guys would like, or you can find the original link that Jay posted elsewhere.

Bad form, yes, but one kickass custom!  As was his Sail Barge last year.  But yeah, coming in here and pretending he had nothing to do with the thing was pretty stupid, and is definitely not going to win him any personal favor amongst our members...

I'm sorry to see CuDa won't be around.  Seemed like a misunderstanding that got blown way out of proportion...

Anyways, yes I need this figure.  I have the basic parts needed -

- VOTC Stormtrooper head
- ROTS SA Clone
- AT-TE Gunner helmet piece

But how to make the hood?  Sculpy?  I think I might have a talk with a fellow customizer who does commissions and see about him making the hood for me.

I found this clone today, that just happens to be his :) The clone itself pretty cool but I really like the mini dio it comes with, he's some sort of urban sniper.

Hi JediSpyke, and welcome!

You're right, a CT Stormtrooper head might work just fine... no reason to really destroy a wonderful VOTC Stormtrooper if not necessary.  I was just thinking about the neck knob on the SA Clone, and thought the VOTC Stormtrooper helmet would fit on it better?

SLC, yes I was referring to Owen!  He's the man.

That Urban Clone is cool, but I like the scene even better too.  I might have him make me a few more little outposts like he did for me on my Battlefront ones.

The VOTC stormies post is bigger than the SA Clone, or smaller I don't remebr which. ::) All I know is they don't swap too easy, it would take a bit of modification either way.

I really like that Speeder Bike display  :D

CHEWIE - how about using a Bust-Ups Stormtrooper head?  You can dremel out a little bit of the neck hole and it will fit fine over the ball-neck-joint.  I haven't tried swapping a VOTC Stormie head onto a SA Clone body, but considering that the only clone heads that are easily interchangeable are the Clone Commander and the #41 SA Clone, I wouldn't expect it to be an easy switch.

thanks, Chewie... You can really tell a lot of the same folks end up making rounds in different customizing forums. I recognize several from here, Rebel Scum and FFURG. I'm sure there's lots more forums but I spend enough time going through just these 3!

As for the storm trooper... Yeah, I couldn't see carving up a $10 figure when a $5 (or cheaper if you use a POTF2 head) figure will do. Granted, you'll have to do more work to get that ball to fit in, but you can get a nice little stone ball sander for dremals...

If I didn't know better, i'd swear that looks more like the artwork of Grievous, before the shuttle accident that left him basically a brain in a jar...just with a stormtrooper mask. Awesome work regardless

Good to see you and JediSpyke make a jump over too.  Peruse the other parts of the forum, you guys may find this to your liking since we try to keep things run well for our members and still keep the site more open and appealing to the "adults" in collecting as far as quality and whatnot.  Enjoy.

This Clone really blows me away.  I am wondering if a Ringwraith figure from the LOTR line might have the hood for a custom of this?

I'll keep the CT Stormtrooper head in mind for a custom of this too.  I really can't afford to be giving up my VOTC Stormies.   :-\

A lot of people have asked about the votc stormy head not fitting well onto the clone neck post but it actually wasn't too bad of a fit.

I hated to dink up my votc trooper but the helmet sculpt is SO much better than the past figures that i couldnt see using anything else.

The coolest part about being the first to have a specific clone up for auction is seeing all the "commander faie's" that will begin popping up in the following days :P  Which is funny because months have gone by and not a single Faie.  I think everyones been keeping busy churning out Codys and Neyo's, heh.

I wish I could find a picture of what he looked like... I can envision it in my head kind of, but it's hard to describe... does anyone have a pic from the Art of Revenge of the Sith?  I think they show it in there.

I seem to remember that his species is a slender, almost skeletal looking kind of alien.  Almost like the Mustafar Sentry, but meaner looking, and I think I remember seeing bandage like wrappings on his arms?

Hey all, CHEWIE thanks for the plug on my dio there. I hate to sell it too, but space and money and a shift in collecting for me has pushed me towards selling it. I hope it will sell for a decent amount on the Bay, I am not trying to rape anyone for it, but I put in about a month and a halfs work on it before it was populated with figures. I also cancelled the listing and relisted with a correct spelled Kashyyyk in the title. I am encouraging pick up of the item in the auction, and I am throwing in the table for it if someone picks it up. If you guys know of anyone who would want a BIG Wookiee and Clone diorama, send them my way!

Paul,

My guess is not that much.  Your custom is great, but there seems to be a very fickle market in terms of what people are willing to buy/ not buy.  The primary demand is for current hot items (Clones & Clone Wars).  I don't think you'll find many bidders for a little known Marvel character.  But who knows, I could be wrong.

As AE77 pointed out to me, Uniqueness is what sells for the big $ on e-bay.
The first of a kind sells for alot and the rest gradually less.
There are a limited number of folks willing to pay huge amounts for a 3 3/4" toy.
So if you get to them first... CHA- CHING!

Which is why the grenader is doing so well... It's unique.

Your right, most people don't know who Lumiya is so it would probably go for very little. My black hole clone trooper with jet pack would probably sell much higher even though its a simplier custom to make.

Besides, its a hard thing to sell one of your customs. It's kind of like selling one of your kids (even though there are days that you would pay someone to take them. ;)) Here are some of the questions I keep asking myself.

Which one do I sell? How much? Will I miss the figure when its gone? Is it good enough to make a decent amount of money? Will it make any money? Maybe I can make a bettter version? Do I really need the money? Is it worth it?

In the past I had never understood selling your items on ebay, but recently I've had a change of heart.  For me, I enjoy the act of creating custom figures and dioramas.  But I don't necessarily have the space or funds for the volume I like to produce.  Nor am I so attached to them, I can't give them up -- they are, after all, things.  My solution is to make some specifically for ebay.  So long as they sell for more than the cost of my materials, I'm in a win-win situation since I've been able to create extra without costing me anything.  Any extra I make goes into projects I'm keeping for myself (such as the Felucia diorama).  I'm not looking to make any sort of profit, but rather to find a way I can continue my hobby of customizing without creating a strain on my finances.  In fact, if I was trying to operate this as a business, I'd be losing money based on labor costs :).

Post by: Jeff on July 22, 2005, 11:32 AM
But I don't necessarily have the space or funds for the volume I like to produce.

This is what happened to me.  I sat down one day and had over 200 custom figures!  I picked my favorite 100 and sold the rest on eBay (starting at $3 each).  Some - mainly Jedi and Pilot Customs - went for a good price (able to recoup what it cost to make the figure), but the majority went for $3-5 each - no get rich quick sceme, but that's fine.  I was able to get rid of them to someone who may enjoy them instead of me just trashing them and recycling the parts into more customs.

I used the cash for fodder and RotS figures so it was the best of both worlds - I made some room on my shelf by selling a lot of my early customs (which were a lot crappier - simple head swaps and what not) and got some cash so that I would keep working on better, more advanced customs for me.

Jeff

Do you guys get unsolicied offers to buy your figures? I've gotten a few recently. The problem is trying to collect the money. They offer huge amount of money for customs but never seem to have the money 'right away'. Why do people offer and then flake? I mean, if you don't have the money or have to wait until 'pay day' to send a check maybe you shouldn't be buying them.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)

I have gotten several offers for figures, usually I just offer to give them help as they make their own.  I think that everybody has made some good points about selling custom figures, but for me I would feel very weird selling a custom figure to somebody.  I can't exactly pinpoint it, but it's kind of a combination of the "my baby" theory ;) as well as the custom being sufficiently good for me, but not for somebody else.  I like my customs and put a lot of work into them, however by just looking at the end result, I'm not sure that I could live up to the high standards of manufactured figures (in terms of construction/paint chipping/etc).

I cant part with mine. The one i sold for commision, i made a duplicate instead of selling mine. Same for my e-bay fox. That was a dup that turned out better than my original, but i parted with it.
The one i'm selling now, i will make a dup for myself.

I wouldn't say my customs are "art", in a way that means that I take them too seriously.  For me, customs are a piece of "art" in as much as somebody that builds birdhouses as a hobby or somebody that knits sweaters would view their work as a piece of "art."  It's really just a hobby to me.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)

For me its a hobby and not art. I think of myself as a model maker and not an artist. Kind of like those guys that worked on the original star wars along time ago but no were as good. To me, it's a way to have a cool figure without waiting for the commerical version.

It does however make me feel a little uneasy about people that treat this hobby as a business <cough>mrtanner<cough>. That kind of stuff reminds me of the cheap knockoff pictures you see on street corners being sold out of a van. I think it lowers peoples perception of this hobby.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)

I think of mine as art. But more so i think of them as part of my collection.
My collection is unique becasue of my customs, not cause i spend rediculous amounts of time and money hunting down little pieces of plastic. (alot of us do) But MY customs are hard to come by...were up until last month.
So that is why i dont want to part with them.
If i do, then i wont have that figure, that I wanted to make, in my collection.

But i see my art as, not the van on the side of the road, but, priceless pieces after i die peniless or chop off my ear!

I've sold about 10 customs on commission, I don't know if that counts as an unsolicited offer. I never asked a lot of money for them. Mostly just the money I payed for the parts + shipping.

About that bussiness thing, I think you're right. There  are people who make customs, JUST to be able to sell them. They come on custom boards, post their (awesome) work, and every body wants a piece of the action. Then you don't see those guys online for like months. And suddenly they are back, with more "goods" to sell...

It's definately art for me.  While i sell most of my customs, i do hold onto a few of them that i wouldnt sell for any amount of money.  For me, i get a much bigger kick from knowing that someone around the world has something I MADE in their collection and enjoys it more than i ever would (having it sit on a shelf, unseen, and probably dusty.)

I suppose in a way its also a hobby though, i don't support myself off customs so itd definately only be a "hobby" to me.  But anyone who makes a custom figure and im not talking a parts swap or a repaint, the second you start sculpting or doing extensive work on a figure, it becomes art, for better or worse, lol.

Dressel Rebel, thanks for summing that up for me.  You did in one sentence what might have taken me a paragraph or two.   ;)

I hope nobody took what I said the wrong way - I see nothing wrong with selling customs on ebay at all.  In fact, I think it's very cool.

There is one person (who I haven't seen post here) that rubbed me the wrong way not too long ago with his comments at the other site.  He doesn't post there very often, but when he does it's only to promote his customs before putting them on ebay - still I am ok with that.  It was some recent comments that he and another made being extremely rude to myself and a couple other customizers.

I'm not really *mad* about it, it just shows how immature some people can be.

BTW, everyone here is awesome.  Not just at customizing either, but your personality and respect for each other.

Oh great, Phruby...now we're going to have to fight with the guy again!  ;)

I have trouble selling customs I make, as I kind of form an attachment to each one I do, and it's hard to part with them. Well, except for clones. I can make clones all day and then part with most of them, because I'm not as invested in them since to me, they're just a repaint.

I am fond of my ARC troopers. though.   :P

I don't know if this is the right place to post it, but I just received a PM trough Ebay fro ma few fellow sellers. They warned me for this guy ani2luke85. This guy has been bidding on all kinds of custom auctions and getting very high prices. But he never pays. He seems to have more then one alias. Others are 501stclone and Vadertater92. So watch out for this punk! He has really bad feedback as well. I blocked him from my auctions.

A lot of sculpting I guess. Looking at the pose the dangergirl is still in, I think he took the original fig as base and went nuts on it with sculpting materials and paints :)

Do you think he used an Epic Force Stormtrooper for the armor?  The sculpting is really good - either he's really talented (which is probably the case) or he stole the armor from an existing figure...
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: Phrubruh on July 27, 2005, 07:38 PM
If you look at the armor legs, you can see they are nothing more than strips of sculpty on the leg itself. It's an illusion that there is actually armor there. It doesn't look that hard to duplicate.

Yes, well worth the money if you can afford it!

Ricky UK now seems to be selling a lot of stuff on ebay.  This Mawhonic is cool, but I don't have the desire to overpay for something like this now that it's relatively easy to get parts from Ask Aak to make your own -

Are you guys sure it's RickyUK selling that stuff? He sent me a PM warning me about a guy who bought his stuff just to make molds to mass produce and resell his stuff and asking me both if he offered to buy anything of his off of me and asking me not to buy off of that guy. I think he may sell on e-bay, so maybe we should check with Ricky before any of you bid or just to make sure it's really Ricky selling that stuff.

Well, I think it's Ricky selling the stuff... whoever it is, is selling only things I've seen on his site.  And it's in the UK... also, the descriptions look like Ricky would have written them.  I could be wrong, but I think it's probably Ricky.

Oh crap. I already bid on the CZ-3. Well, we will see what happens. Besides, is it wrong to buy a custom figure and make castings of it to sell? Since you bought it, it is your property. I guess this goes under bootlegging.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: Gregorbian on August 1, 2005, 12:18 AM
I think that I would be pretty pissed if somebody did that (made casts of a figure that I had made).  Of course, I don't really sculpt original pieces or anything like that, so I don't have anything to be worried about, however, if I had put a lot of time into sculpting something and I sold it to a guy who, in turn, made molds of it and "mass produced" it, I don't think I would be too happy.

I think that Ty Krazen's Ventress could be duplicated now that he has shown what can be done.  Very inventive figure.  I don't know how easy it would be to make that cardback though.

The Clone is great.  I was looking at that on ebay last night with a friend.  Now he's wanting me to make him one, but I doubt I could make the top of the helmet to look even half that good.

Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: tykrazen on August 4, 2005, 12:38 PM
;D I feel honored to have made the thread...

As Chewie pointed out, this isn't too difficult a figure to make if you have a dremmel.  The worst part is the cost of the CW Asajj Ventress figure for parts.

I should point out you need to shorten luminara's neck to make the head look right.

Parts list for the figure is:

Aurra Sing - modded head
Luminara - modded body, skirt, legs and arms (minus gloves)
Asajj Ventress - gloves, plastic skirt (heavily cut), lightsabers, cape

I originally was doing this figure just for ebay, but I've fallen in love with it so much that I'll make another for myself (assuming this one sells).  I am planning on changing the plastic skirt to the Jedi vs. Sith Asajj skirt (with similar mods) so that it has the cross-hatching pattern.

And as for the cardback, I'm glad to share it if anyone wants it and plan to pass the template onto FFURG once the auction is over.

He looks pretty good, I really like the softgoods/metal straps. They are my favorite part of the figure. I think the blue needs to be dinged up a bit as well as dulled becasue it is a tad shiney. Those straps make it quite unique looking, I wonder how they are made?
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)

I agree that those straps are the best part.  Aside from the straps it's a decent custom, but those straps put it over the top.
I don't really like the decision to use a metallic blue on the figure, I'm sure it's good for "selling" it though  :P

I agree Chewie . Im kinda cloned out my self but I was looking at prices on ebay at every figure trying to come up with a good price to sell my entire collection or half of it and have no clue what its worth.  :P

I like the straps on that clone though and the blue. My opinion is that if there where that many clones there had to be alot of variations. So I think letting people make new paint jobs like that (new to me) is pretty cool.

I don't think he meant "junky" to mean that it was crappy (because it's not), I think he meant that he has a lot of accessories that we usually don't see on Clones.  But I love this custom, it's fantastic.  Very creative too!  I might suggest darkening his skin a bit, but as it is, it's still wonderful.

Here's one that someone here has on ebay currently.  Most of you will probably recognize it... I really think this is a cool, unique custom -

Of course there is the need for a parachute or in this case repulsor lift, or whatever it is they use. And they also have to have any mission critical ordanance and weapons, because they are being dropped behind enemy lines and can't be resupplied.

Quote
It just seems like commenting on a clone that you don't fully "understand" is a bit silly.  Its not a useful suggestion, its a "high and mighty" opinion which i dont find useful at all.

Let's try not to argue guys. I'm sure phruby meant no offense, he was just commenting on the amount of stuff the guy has on him. It is generally better to hold back that kind of suggestion when you don't know what something is, but again I really don't think he was trying to be all high and mighty.

Let's just play nice ok? :)

It's a great custom, I don't think anyone has said that it isn't.  Phruby is entitled to his opinion, and I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

But I agree, let's not get mad at each other over anything.  A little criticism is welcome here in my book as long as it's constructive.  We aren't like that other site and just say "Nice!" or "Kewl!" like so many others do.  Those are the kind of compliments that are essentially post-padding.  We try and be constructive, help each other out, give our honest opinions, etc.

Calm down aeseven7. I mean you no harm. :-\

Besides, unless you have an offical referance picture of a halo jumper clone, it must have come completely from your imagination. How would I know what your imagination would produce in the way of a halo jumper.

If I were to make this figure, it would have been very different. For example, I would have put the tubes and extra accessories inside some kind of compact device. I figure if they are far enough in the future, they would have come up with a way to make things more streamlined and to give the jumper better control over drag. That doesn't mean my idea is any better than yours. It's just different.

Take some drugs,  calm down.

Cool custom, when I read "Halo" I thought of the video game  ;)  I like all of the gear, but I know what Phruby is talking about - clones seem to be pretty streamlined (usually).  Still, I think it's a great custom - well done as always aeseven7!  ;D

CuDa - I don't understand the "2" items in your auction.  You're selling the Black Clone Pilot separately from the Slave I, but they're in the same auction?  I'm so confused...  :-\

I like the Clone Jumper; I think he's keen looking. Excellent paint app, and very true to our own HALO jumpers. (Ripcord, anyone? Anyone?) But if I didn't know what aeseven was going for, I can see how he would look kind of like he was a scavenger or something, with all the extra gear. So I'm Switzerland in this one.

I'm digging this custom on EBAY right now, by my very own friend Jesse:

I'm of the mind that it was never really intended for Jan, that was just the cover story for RS. Besides, if he really wanted to recoup something from Jan for his efforts, he couldn've traded it for some of her art. She does beautiful commission work.

I'm not knocking his work...he does amazing stuff and should be compensated well when he sells it...but I think it's more the $$$ that he's interested in than the love of customizing. I have trouble parting with simple stuff I do, much less complicated pieces like he does. Just an opinion.

I've had some tough unexpected expenses hit me all of a sudden...

- new tires - $186.00
- other car repairs - $293.21
- furnace at home - $231.44

Plus I am going on a bachelor party next week to Memphis.  I had saved $300.00 for it.   Now all that money is gone, and I am pretty much broke.  Plus I had to just pay for a tux rental, which was $90.00.

All that together, and I just had $800.00 in expenses... huge hit on my money situation.

So, I need money quick.  I will be posting probably quite a few items on ebay very soon.  I would rather post them here or in a classifieds section, but I need to sell stuff quick and get paid quickly, and have a few carded/boxed items along with a few customs that I might put on there.

I'm not posting this to get people to here to try and bid on my stuff, I just don't want someone to come across anything I'm selling and be like "why are you selling that on ebay CHEWIE?"

Well, that's nice of you guys.  I feel kind of awkard advertising any of my auctions though... if it were a simple matter of me having money and time to burn, I'd love to make some customs for you guys at cost.  But, unfortunately that's not how my situation is.   ;)

Tell you what, maybe I'll post a link to one auction, that way you could view the other auctions if you choose.  I probably won't posting a plethora of customs though, just a few to help me get by with these added expenses.

I do have a few other things that I might throw on there too.  And of course I need to dedicate a figure for the Disaster Relief.  I'm thinking maybe the Darktrooper I made a while back.  I would take better pics of him first though.

too bad he never swaps to a more posable body with a head so it would be a  removable helmet on those 12" clones he keeps selling.

That would require too much work, and give the buyer too much value for their money.

That same guy who did the advanced field scout just did a really nifty "Tron" trooper. Check it out:

Tron was a great arcade game, remember Discs of Tron too? i always had a hard time with the light cycles. i played a ton of Ms. Pac-man, Donkey Kong Jr., Turbo, Pooyan, Burger Time, Pole Position, Star Wars (of course), Galaga and Defender.

my all-time fave though was Joust. the prize of our house is the full size Joust machine in the living room that we own & that i hold high score of 225,000 on ;D

i guess i have always been a big nerd, oh well  :P

back on topic.......that clone mountain climber is interesting, i don't know what to think of it entirely. the mountain might have been cooler with some lava oozing out for a nice Mustafar diorama addition.

It's good he includes the base, cause the figure is only an SA Clone with a Cruisemissile trooper head. Still I think it is kinda cool, he could use some sort of coloring or legion distinction though.

You got 225,000 on Joust?! Wow! That's impressive!

The highest I've gotten is 175,000 on my full size Kangaroo machine.

I've always wanted a fullsize machine, i just never had anywhere to put it.

Hey Rip, If you ever move would you hook up a car battery to it to keep the high score like George Costanza? :D

Joust was one of my favorites, I can still hear the screaching pterodactyl or whatever it was, but DK was first.

oooooooooh Phruby i loved Kangaroo - that is an impressive score!

Glassman, i might actually have to do that if we ever move  :P
the pterodactyl is tough, but there is a little trick to defeat him known only to Joust Masters lol ;)

my hubby & i found Joust at an outdoor flea market for $50 and all that was wrong with it was some dead RAM chips and a chewed up power cord. we bought a new overlay for it since the old one had a cigarette burn in it, but other than that it seemed to have barely been played so there was no way i could resist buying it!

here are some screen shots of it & my high score, which is 218,000, and yes my real name is keri  :) i thought it was 225,000 but that is still pretty good i think  ;D  my hubby joe managed to get 174,000 not too shabby  :)

We have a Joust machine at my office. Some guy ordered it ages ago and never picked it up, so now we occasionally turn that baby on and have a go at the pterodactyl.

If I could own any stand-up machine, my top three would probably be Donkey Kong, Joust and Galaga, not necessarily in that order.

aww shucks DD you got me blushing, you're too sweet  :-*

yeah, $50 is a really good price actually Phruby. joe and i went to a live arcade auction and people were paying over $500 for just about every machine there, and in some cases over the $1000 mark for a Defender II machine that wasn't working 100% - was giving the old rug pattern, meaning a ROM chip error. they had about 6 Galaga machines there but each went for around $700-800...i wanted one too DD. i'll just keep hitting the flea markets & thrift shops & hopefully get lucky  ;D

i also would kill for a cockpit Atari Star Wars & someday when i have the room & cash i am dying for a 1992 Data East Star Wars Pinball machine.  ;D

I've been checking out that guy's work.  It's pretty good.  I'm in the process of upgrading my 12" Imperials.  The TIE Pilot took about 10 minutes to do, although I still need to paint his gloves black.  Figures like Imperial Commanders and Death Star Troopers are easy to do, but upgrading Clones take a bit more work (you need to resize the armor pieces).
There are quite a few of really good 12" figure customs on e-Bay right now

Why do we automatically assume the worst of people selling on E-Bay? Maybe this person selling Bantha 5's work bought it from him, but has hit hard times and has to part with pieces of their collection to get by?

Or maybe they're a scumbag. But we don't know, do we? Why are we so quick to judge the situations and motives of people we don't know?

Damn...the collecting community is so predisposed to automatically start hating...

Well, I guess it just seems a tad bit wrong.  But everyone may have their own circumstances which force us to do that.

But if I sold someone a custom, and saw it on ebay a little later, I might be a little curious - is this person trying to make money off of me?

That's not to say that the seller is a bad person or anything.  It's just raises one's eyebrows.

 :P
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: Darth Delicious on October 30, 2005, 11:12 PM
Right...but we should probably find out from Bantha 5 what the story is.

Although really...if someone commissions me to do a piece, I sell it for say, $25, and then they turn around and sell it for $40...do I have a right to be upset? After all, I was paid my asking price.

Maybe I just decide not to sell to that person anymore, and sell the stuff for $40 myself. Or at least, charge more for my work in the future. (Not that anyone's knocking the door down for any of my work, but still...)   ;)

I agree that it seems wrong. I wouldn't do it myself because it SEEMS sleazy in my mind, but is that just because I'm a customizer myself?

I'm interested in Bantha5 weighing in on this...

-DD
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: Ruprecht on October 31, 2005, 12:29 AM
I don't think anybody who does commissions expects the buyer to turn around and sell it for a profit.  There is no manufacturer/retailer/consumer relationship here, and commissioning a custom usually costs less than it would to compete with other buyers on ebay.

I'd be ticked if somebody did that to me, especially with the exceptional time required and resulting quality pieces you guys and guys like Bantha5 turn out.  I'd probably decide not to make and sell anything to that person anymore, but that's just me.

There may be some unknown factors:  Maybe the seller fell on extremely difficult financial times.  If I lost my job, etc., my action figures would be the first thing to go after a few more extraneous things were liquidated.

Two words: Free. Market.

If the initial seller fails to sell at fair market value, he or she cannot be heard to complain that the buyer later did sell for FMV. If it upsets the initial seller, he needs to charge more $$$ next time (and of course he's free to no longer sell to anyone who has offended him).

I know this topic isn't for promoting your OWN ebay-auctions,

You're right - no linking to your own auctions is allowed.   :(

I'd hate for this thread to have to close because the content moved towards "auctions are being promoted" instead of "customs being appreciated".

Just remember, it's OK to talk about cool customs you see on eBay, but there isn't always a need to post the link in here.  People are smart and can usually find the actual auction on their own by a quick search.

[/end reminder]

Thanks,
Jeff

I think starkid's saying in his own special way:  The person that makes Fox, topless Leia, etc.,  "nag5370," has female girl parts and not male boy parts.

How we were supposed to deduce that from her ebay id, i haven't a clue.

Most impressive.

I've seen various 12 inch scale X-Wing's before on eBay but this one is definately the most impressive so far.

I can see the high price (must have been a ton of work), but where on EARTH would you find room for it!?!

*Most impressive thing I've seen is still the huge diorama of the Imperial Shuttlecraft docking in the Death Star from Celebration III.  I just couldn't believe how large it was in person!*

Exactly, the helmet is in series need of being redone. It looks nothing like the helmet. However the body is well done. If I bought this I'd put my glassman helmet on him and crush that helmet with my car tire.

Ya know he seems a bit...zombie like to me.  Are these purely fictional renderings, or is there some factual stuff that goes behind rendering him in this way?  CHEWIE did an awesome DP, and at least he had flesh.   ;D

I agree with that aeseven...  Lots of quality effort on that figure.  I see the Navy SEAL roots there with some of the parts, but there's unique elements that make sense for aquatic Clones like the head lamp, the bulk...  Short of a little propulsion accessory (a Sea-Do type thing, SW style) it's pretty unique.  The pistol's even cool as it looks special for that trooper.

And of course our current one from TRIER we have for the giveaway here at JediDefender.com is equally well thought-out I believe.  Some quality aquatic Clones out there for something not even seen in the films! :)

I don't know about this one. To me it looks like the customizer when overboard on the navy seal aspect of the figure. It looks like it would fit in better with a SOCOM or gi joe collection than star wars. Personally, I think Tr1er's aquatrooper is far superior.

The Aqua Clone looks very life-like.  I really don't like underwater Star Wars designs too much, but I must admit that's awesome.  That little guide light on the side of the helmet is outstanding.

The head is really good but it looks like he cheaped out on the construction of the body and arms. The arms look like they are made out of toilet paper rolls.

It's good enough that someone bid on it at that price.  (I was pretty sure it would be a no-bid item.

They didn't even have the decency to SAY that they STOLE this idea.

BTW, just a quick question while were on the subject. Has anyone else ever seen one of their stolen ideas copied and put on ebay? Ive seen one of my JLU customs copied a couple of months back. But never one of my posted SW customs. Personally I find this kind of thing to be offensive.

Here is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Paint the included holograms that come with figures now a days.

The head is not sculpted by Ben it doesnt have the same head-dress, and the face is not close to his at all. I do really like that bastilla though, it's the best I've seen someone do. :)

Haha thats one of the guys cast from the one he sculpted at RS in the diaroma thing. If hes selling the clones too, then why the heck did he even make the diaroma? Its going to be just Aayla and the plants now lol.

EDIT: Oh the clones are just there for scale. Man he must be mighty proud of his skills to try and sell that thing for $70  :o
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: tykrazen on July 7, 2006, 09:36 AM
It's a cast of his original sculpt -- my guess is he's trying to recoup the costs of making the mold.  My Jabba throne is only a bit larger and the cost of that mold was around $80.  I'll be suprised if it sells for that price.

If he really wanted to sell it for that price he needed to make a custom ROTS window box for it.  Then it might have sold in that range.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 7, 2006, 09:37 AM
Either way it's a good sculpt but I think the price is a little high. He was orignally making casts to sell unpainted to some people at RS including me, but if all of them are $70, whew, I might have to pass now.
Title: Re: Customs on Ebay that you like (NOT YOUR OWN)
Post by: Smartypants1635 on July 7, 2006, 10:55 AM
Not the Brain of a Genius is he. Make multiples, and sell each for around 15-20 bucks, instead of trying to get all of the money back in pass, the whole point of the mold is so you can make multiples if needed. ::) I will admit, if he drops the price I'll definately be getting one.
