Title: Whatcha doin' till Vintage?
Post by: Darth_Anton on March 25, 2010, 10:52 AM
If you're caught up with everything that's been released, all we have left are the TRU Exclusives; EU BAD wave and TFU BP's (unless I'm forgetting something.) And they should be out no later than next month. That means we have May, June and July with no new non-animated product. What's everyone doing in the down time?

I don't do the animated figures, so I'm going to enjoy the break for sure, but I'm sure I'll pick up some odd and end imperial pieces if I find good deals.

I'm saving money.  Looks like TF & Joes are also on vacation until August.

I'm buying Halo toys, some TF movie toys, Marvel Universe figures, Iron Man 2 toys and of course the TRU EU wave.

I should have enough to keep me busy. I'll also be saving up for the summer release of SW Vintage toys and the AT-AT.

Marvel Universe, IM2, and maybe a little more back tracking of SW figures I have missed out on.

Hopefully, for the most part, saving up.  I collect some of the CW stuff, and I think there are two or three figures (the "Snow" Obi-Wan wave) that I'd like to still pick up prior to the new line branding in the fall.  Otherwise, aside from a few Marvel/DC figures here and there, I'm hoping to just save up for the AT-AT and the vintage line in general.  I always have intentions to save up all this money though, and it never seems to work out quite that way.

Saving money, and I'm delving into 1:16 RC tanks...  1:16 tanks compared to 1:18 tanks are a drastic scale difference but they display well with 1:18 figures and support vehicles enough that I want to spread out.

The 1:16 RC tank world has diversity galore...  Off the top of my head there's at least 5 German tanks I could spit out immediately, a Sherman, a couple Russian armor pieces (unheard of in 1:18).  And they're anywhere from $90-ish to $150-ish and can be upgraded tremendously with real metal parts.

I've been itching to try these out, and I figure now's the time.  Some of them even "smoke" when damaged by another tank.  Pretty slick.

I figure otherwise I'm just squirreling away for Vintage then and that way I'll ease up my usual budgeting some.  The way I figure it won't be too pricey a year I think anyway, but any extra will help that even more, especially if some great army builders sneak in.

JACK reminded me but I forgot to mention the shelves...

I built my office desk last year, and so now I need to build the upper shelves to it, and then the shelves mounted to the wall above that, for the main display area for my collection.  I also need to finish the insert shelf for my bound comics and radio/CD stand that goes with it.  At that point I'll have that wall of the office done and can start looking at the shelving I put up already around the ceiling, as I want to redo some of it and the way I mounted it to a more hanging (than supported from beneath) system.

I've been putzing around all winter on that stuff and now that it's warming I need to go back into the routine of working on that in the evenings I'm home.

For me, it's mostly going to be saving up, but I still have to get:

It will be great if I can get all of that taken care of by the end of May. I expect the new stuff to start hitting by the end of July, so two months "off" will be nice.

Re-examining why I'm even bothering to collect anymore.

Sounding like a broken record, but I can't find stuff locally, I'm disinterested in ebay or paying $15 at an online retailer and the US is facing distribution issues itself.  Couple that with a room that is mostly crammed full at the moment and the question of why and what am I doing with all this stuff and I've reached a point where I'm not sure I care.

There's some stuff I love (loose vintage), some stuff I hate (PT - if I can't remember the name of a character this close to a movie's release, I'm probably not that deeply invested emotionally) and some stuff in the middle.  The stuff in the middle ranges from the 8th Han Solo figure I have to the carded vintage stuff.  Do I really need 8+ Han's; probably not.  Do I really need to have the carded version of the loose vintage figure or do I want to own a Harley more, cuz there's still a chunk of change to be had culling it out.

On one had I'm pissed at Hasbro because for better than 15 years I've enjoyed collecting this stuff.  On the other hand there's still some opportunity to recoup a good chunk of the money I put in and get a motorcycle out of it.  Without the famine I might not feel that way.  I'm sure Harley Davidson will be thrilled to have me buying skull covered foot pegs and probably won't make it that hard for me to find them. ;)

I'll also pull everything out of the collection room and dust.

Funny you say that because similar thoughts have been going through my head lately... I'm toying with ditching mini-busts except for the OT ones at the moment.  I'm down to just the loose collection Hasbro-wise, and I don't want to get rid of it per se, but I'm definitely finding myself excited about the drawdown in terms of new product - ESPECIALLY in terms of the EU stuff.  I'm thinking about selling off some more army builders as well.

I'm also thinking this because i'm interested in a motorized vehicle with two wheels, but mine would be a much more affordable Honda Ruckus. :)

While I'm not ready to make the leap into getting rid of the entire Hasbro collection, the only thing I consider entirely untouchable is the vintage collection.

Finally got to sit down and tally my revised Battalion. I'm still in need of about 50 stormtroopers, a couple of scanning techs and a several officer types. I'll probably work on these during the down time.

Depending on which Stormtroopers you're looking for, I might be able to help.  I'm toying with the idea of letting about 20 of mine go.

I've got tons of the 30thAC version... almost none of the Tantive one.  I've got 50 VOTC's but had planned on keeping those ones.

Well, I'm pretty much a Basic Figure/BP/CP collector. I don't collect vehicles, unless they're included in BPs - and the price these days are just too high! But in the meantime till Vintage, I'll be catching up on TLC and TCW - I buy at a slow pace, and I have a lot to catch up on!

I found something that's going to keep me real busy through the down times here over Summer.

I'm already looking to upgrade things...  Other tanks I want too.  I got my first on Friday and drove it all over the house...  If the weather had been better I'd have been out and about.

Either way, this'll definitely be a real time consumer during this gap in stuff to buy.  I'm kinda really enjoying not looking for toys too...  I'm almost enjoying it a little too much.

Looking forward to Kubrick deluxe series 1 in May, and series 2 in August!

Continuing to thin the Hasbro herd- I plan on being down to 100 loose figures by August, and 50 carded. I haven't decided about the ships yet.

What I've sold so far got me my Kymco people 250 S, and my bike a good tune-up, plus the money set aside for Kubricks and 1 AT-AT.

Packing away other items (action fleet, card collection) in deep storage so I can re-discover them in 5 years and enjoy them again.

I wonder if Hasbro has seen this thread?  I can't imagine any business plan that allows a captive audience, and consumer, "time off" to spend cash on other products...

I wonder if Hasbro has seen this thread?

They are well aware that this will happen...  this is not the first year they've done this - same thing happened in 2008 and 2009.

They are hoping/expecting that some collectors use the "time off" to spend cash on the other stuff they are hyping.  In 2008 it was Indy, in 2009 it was TFers/GI Joe, in 2010 it's Iron Man, etc.

Once I complete my Jabba's Palace dio I think I will be making a Kenobi Hut dio display. After seeing how great he looked in that thread I am inspired. I was happy with how my Palace display turned out that I am going to take another stab at one once I am done.

After the EU wave and TFU sets are acquired it will be a long wait until new stuff so between dios and saving more money I should be quite busy.

Cool idea Nick - let's see how I'm doing with my list...

Since I wrote the original list, I've decided that I want to get openers of the Birth of Vader, Tatooine Ambush, Jedi vs. Sith, and Holocron Heist Battlepacks. I'm thinking about just ordering them from Hasbro Toy Shop to be done with them.

I guess I'm just not ready to "let go" for three months yet...

Isn't this about the time that collector interest dropped off sharply?

I know being Canadian makes me an oddball, so there's that.  But Hasbro has had those of us interested in OT stuff on hiatus for nearing nine months now.  A smattering of US carded stuff has trickled in but since there's no point in being in stores regularly, I've missed most of it.  With another several months to go I find I really don't give a crap anymore.  I've got a garage sale coming in a week or two and originally it was going to be mostly titaniums, PT figures and ships.  Now the OT stuff is being thinned fairly dramatically as well.

I just don't care anymore about this stuff.  The hunt was a big part of the fun.  I could always buy at higher prices from online dealers if I wanted to but that was never the point.  Now with a massive break in time and really crappy distribution over the past year plus what I consider questionable decisions from Hasbro on what is in particular lines, I'm just out.  I completely agree with Hasbro's push on Clone Wars and what I've seen of the cartoon has been enjoyable so marketing wise from that perspective, they're right on target.  The old guard has been told to screw off and I'm getting the message loud and clear.  Unlike the gaps we saw in the old days that lasted for the last two series' out of a particular line I'm not coming back in this time.  POTJ did a fine job of luring me back in with some really cool stuff and I suspect I'll buy an occasional figure or upgrade but one of everything and army building are done.  Dioramas are done.  Side lines are done.

I'm sad but I'm happy too.  Weird.

Right there with ya, but I'm in the states (still an oddball enough I suppose). Part of it for me is that I'm not sure what more they could offer that I could get truly excited about. I know they are upgrading figures, but it actually ticks me off to think of dropping the price of a new figure for a slight upgrade of something I have (plus they will do it again in 2-3 years). I think I'm just at the saturation point with the product line period. Regardless of what cardback they put it on.
I totally agree regarding the clone wars line. It looks good, is supported by a pretty good show, and they should milk it for all it is worth. I'm just not interested in collecting it. If this were 1995, I might have the room and the desire to do it. But 15 years later I have quite a lack of both space and desire for new lines. I'm ready to let Star Wars be a kids line again. It was adult focused for a good long time, and I enjoyed it tremendously. And the items we sell don't vanish, they go to someone else who appreciates them and enjoys them too. It keeps the line alive in a different way.

For want of anything new to buy, I seem to have ended up collecting Bespin guards and performing head and hand swaps. Has anybody else been doing this?

The alien has yet to hit the Uk so I've just been buying up the first version.

I swapped a Captain Needa noggin' onto one of the alien Bespin Guards...  Worked well.

I've picked up three so far, I don't want to go too crazy in case they release some new onscreen head sculpts.

I found the Commander Faie from the legacy's head works pretty good, seeing as I only picked it up for a BAD piece it's nice to get some use out of him.

You know, although I've picked up an odd Star Wars figure here or there (a couple CW, a couple extra Legacy figures), I've mainly been picking up other lines during the lull (primarily Marvel Universe and DCUC).  I haven't been able to save up as much for vintage as I would have liked, as I've been using the time to pick up some of the books and TPBs I've been wanting to get for awhile, but I don't expect I'll be picking up much else until TVC hits.

Oh well if we're talking non-collecting then yes, I've planted a veggie garden.
Includes:
Cucumbers
Peas
Spinach
Corn
Peppers (red, yellow and black-yes black) These are just like green peppers, only different in color)
Tomatoes (7 different kinds)

I also have a spice garden the includes:
Parsley (regular and Italian flat leaf)
Basil
Oregano
Cilantro
and two others I can't recall at the moment.

We also planted several flowers and in one corner of the yard made a new flower bed.

Also, last weekend I cut down our 6 Hemlock trees. Four were on the side, two in the front. I wanted a work out since I'm an overweight man. So I bought a 3ft axe. I managed to cut the first three down this way. Tough work, but it was really fun. At the end of those three I tuckered out. My wife went to a neighbor's to get a chainsaw and down went the last three.

Normally I'm a nature lover, but these trees were close to the house and the roots were threatening the foundation, so they had to go. The wood is being donated as firewood so nothing went to waste.

So I totally echo Phruby's comment that yard work can be fun. And productive too! Can't wait to harvest my veggies!!!

Something else I've spent this "down time" working on is sort of going through everything I have, reorganizing, packing away, and considering selling.  I guess overall it has been a good time to "inventory" to some extent, and just look at all the crap stuff I'm trying to find room for in our house any more (whether it is on display or stored away).  For me anyways, reorganizing and doing an inventory often means a reassessment of what I really need to collect.  There is so much great stuff made these days, but it is really tough to find the room to display it properly (let alone afford it).

I generally only buy basic figures, so I'm wrapping up on TLC - especially since I've noticed that I'm buying less and less figures from my "REALLY WANT" list. By the time TVC comes out, I'll be barely finishing with TLC. And unless I can find that last wave of CPs, then I should be saying "goodbye" forever to TLC by the end of this month.

As for TCW, I still need a hell of a lot of catching up to do - I have not one figure from TCW 2010 Waves 1-3, except Snow Gear Obi and Ani.

Its been awhile, but I'm pretty sure I picked up the Crumb Bomber back in maybe Oct/Nov on sale for $40 and I had a $5 off coupon on top of that.  They dried up shortly there after in my neck of the woods.  I'd like to track down the ol CW version from back in the day, and possibly the WM version I skipped, but ya probably not.  Still trying to pay off some bills before the August onslaught.

Good luck on a sale!   :)

A sale seems like it's probably out of the question at this point.  But it's amazing to see the prices that some of the older Republic Gunships are fetching.  That Clone Wars Command Gunship is going for SICK ammounts on the secondary market.

I haven't seen one since mid December, and this is at four different TRU stores.  They sold out fast in St. Louis.  Would have bought one then but there was too much other stuff all hitting at once, plus didn't have too much extra spending money around Christmas anyway.

TIE Interceptors though?  Each TRU around here still has several.

Almost done with TLC RED.  My last holdout piece?  The Crumb Bomber Republic Gunship, and I'm hoping for a sale on that.

Is that thing still at TRU?  I haven't seen that thing in a looong time.

DONE.  As of 12:15 I have the Crumb Bomber Republic Gunship in hand with a TRU reqards card coupon.

Since I haven't bought any toys in a couple of months, I've been putting funds aside for the new product launch in a month (or so). So far I've got $1700 set aside.

So now I'm trying to figure out if that's gonna be enough. So factoring that I'm gonna be getting three AT-ATs (one to open, one in regular packaging, one in throwback packaging) - that's $300 + tax

I'm gonna get two of every figure, so that's roughly..

Vintage: 2 x 12 figures x 2 waves of vintage x $8 = $384
Clone Wars: 2 x 12 figures x 2 waves of CW x $7 = $336
Legends (I only get one of each for the MOC collection): 1 x 12 figures x $7 = $84

After that there's Battlepacks, Vehicles, Deluxe Sets, Exclusive figures Jodo Kast, Nikto Guard and Kul Teska, Jabba @ WalMart, and what else?

Is there one big list somewhere with all of the items coming out in August listed?

I have absolutely no idea where to post this question, so since it's a down time project, it might fit here. So, here goes.

I'd like to conduct an informal poll. I've been reworking/expanding my imperial battalion, adding HQ's and redistributing personnel to more appropriate duties. I've added medical personnel and decided that they would be represented by green outfits. The question is - which green do you think works better:

The pale green from Lt. Sunbar?

or

The darker green from Rom Mohc?

or

A happy medium?

Thanks.

I love the Sunber's outfit, color, and the figure itself so I'm going to vote for Sunber green! I have only seen Rom Mohc in stores, but that green looked very dark. Now, if you wanted your medics to look extremely classy, I would suggest those Christmas Tarkins that were released a few years ago.
