Title: Wow - Modern eBay Auctions
Post by: Rob on June 7, 2020, 02:37 PM
I was just looking around eBay to see if I could find any production samples of cancelled Hasbro 3.75" items and stumbled across completed auctions for comic pack figures.  Some of these are selling for $150 to $300 for a pair of figures and I started thinking we should have a modern version of this thread that we have in the Vintage section.

Like... $300 for KASHYYYK TROOPER + COMMANDER BOGEY Republic Comic Pack STAR WARS Legacy 3.75in. (https://www.ebay.com/itm/KASHYYYK-TROOPER-COMMANDER-BOGEY-Republic-Comic-Pack-STAR-WARS-Legacy-3-75in/184255190473?hash=item2ae67715c9%3Ag%3AeYgAAOSwAMxel6IN&LH_BIN=1)

$270 for Exar Kun (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Legacy-Collection-Comic-Pack-Exar-Kun-Tales-of-the-Jedi-2009/264652624294?hash=item3d9e8691a6%3Ag%3AhwEAAOSwE0deW946&LH_BIN=1)

$180 for Rohlan Dyre and Jararel (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rohlan-Dyre-Jarael-Star-Wars-Comic-Packs-15-Knights-Old-Republic-Figures-2010/293559405753?hash=item4459810cb9%3Ag%3AtVwAAOSwxBNepLaV&LH_BIN=1)

$250 for Deliah Blue and Darth Nihl (https://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTHENTIC-Star-Wars-3-75-DELIAH-BLUE-DARTH-NIHL-Exclusive-Legacy-Comic-Pack/124196687575?hash=item1ceab30ed7%3Ag%3ArGAAAOSwoZpeyDQP&LH_BIN=1)

Like... when did this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-12-Star-Wars-3-75-034-Loose-Action-Figures-/293550102611?hash=item4458f31853%3Ag%3AXTsAAOSwVWFemc31&LH_BIN=1&nma=true&si=%252F8fGKq%252BonoUGuY17LKQEAxbt9S4%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557) become a $330 pile of figures?!

I know these might be outliers because I was narrowing my search by highest price sold to find expensive items, but I had no idea some of this stuff sells for this kind of money.  I always figured my collection was worth $5 to $10-ish per figure on average, now I'm not so sure...

If you see crazy 1995-present auctions, post them here!

This was during the time when I couldn’t open anything due to lack of space.

I’ve got shelving for stuff now but just can’t bring myself to open it.

Were most of those comic figures listed from that EE exclusive wave? I remember hearing those were a pretty low production run.

I think these increases in secondary market prices correlate to the way the 3.75” figure line has diminished in the past year plus.  There’s definitely a demand that doesn’t seem to be getting fulfilled by Hasbro.  So people are looking to past releases.

The TVC line seems to be a focal point for a lot of this attention.  But it also seems to be carrying over to a lot of the figure lines released between 2007 and 2013.  That truly was a great time to be a collector in the Star Wars 3.75” figure system.

Those were good times to be a collector.  And to think for most of that there was no upcoming movie and the only new Star Wars was a cartoon that was pretty mediocre in the beginning.

Yowza.  I guess maybe I need to dig some of these out and consider putting them up for auction too.  That's some serious cash.

Part of me has been wondering if this is a deliberate reset period that Hasbro is engaging in.  Did the powers that be at Hasbro realize that they made such significant missteps with the TFA, Rogue One, TLJ and Solo lines that they decided to try to artificially create demand?  Because it seems like they might be doing just that.  For The Rise of Skywalker, so far there have been only 10 Black Series figures and about 7 TVC figures.  Something definitely seems to be up.

There seems to be a whole lot more demand, especially for 3.75" super articulated figures, than I can recall seeing a year or so ago.  And if you're in some of the TVC groups on Facebook?  OMG, it's nuts.

I watched TROS on DVD the other day and was mentally cataloging some of the cool, unmade stuff that Hasbro could reasonably put out in an under $50 package.  Pasaana speeders, Treadspeeder, Ochi's ship (scaled down could maybe be $50), and bunches of cool figures.   They need to bring back Battle Packs and have them themed around the Pasaana festival, Pasaana speeder chase, Rebel home base, Endor moon stormtrooper deserters.  So many good possibilities.  Put four 5POA figures together and charge $45 for them.

The level of 3.75 output for TROS is criminal.

There's probably a better thread for this, but if they made Palpatine in his contraption and included that Sith Throne, they could take all my money.  Hell, do another pack with a few royal guards, and a Ben and Rey...

Beyond all the cool vehicles they could make, just a regular line of basic figures could include:
General Pride
Lando in his first outfit
Ben
Kylo Ren with his busted up glued together Mask
Poe
Finn
Rose
Leia
Ghost Luke
Flashback Luke, Flashback Leia
Palpatine on his crane thing...
Babu
Threepio
Wedge
Royal Guard
Evil Rey
The rest of the Knights of Ren
Boolio
Ochi of Bestoon
Klaud
Jannah
Rey's Parents

There's probably a better thread for this,

Scott needs to make a comeback and do some of his Top Tens again (Of course, I could do a shameless plug for Yakface's Top Ten for TRoS, which is currently running).

It is interesting.  I've noticed some specific items selling for high values.  I have been selling off my Hasbro carded figures in lots on facebook marketplace.  For the large part, figures have been selling for what they cost back in the day.  I've been going in release order and I'm currently up to the ROTS figures on the Vader cards.  They have been languishing for a month at $6 a figure and they are in figure cases.  I have had very few things sell for above cost.  I have avoided listing on ebay for the most part due to the fees.

SDCC exclusives seem to garner big bucks.  For example, the two mini card figures from the Revenge of the Jedi set have sold for $500 each.  I always go to ebay before listing anything just to make sure something hasn't gone through the roof for unknown reasons.  I haven't been really surprised yet.  The original red and green card figures are still generally in the $3 to $4 per figure carded unless they are some sort of variant.  Even the old original EU wave of figures that had the 3D scenes on the cardbacks sell for all that much.  I got about $11 per figure for the wave of nine figures.  Good to know some specific stuff is selling for good prices for even loose figures if I ever get to that point in sales.  I just have what feels like a million boxes of stuff in my basement taking up space at this point that I'm trying to unload.  I just want someone to finally buy all this prequel stuff so I can move on to the 30AC and BAD stuff that people are more interested in overall.

It breaks down to only $278 a figure (plus shipping and tax!)

Good lord...

I collected a set of 18, ignoring the green variations and was getting them in the $20-$23 each range.

Looking at complete auctions, the price of these seems to have gone up, but into that $40-$45 range... mark it up a little more because this guy did all the work and I could even see this being a $2000-ish lot if someone was crazy enough, but $10k is absurd.

I just looked that up... $1260, when they were $500-$600 a few weeks ago.  Ahsoka Mini-busts are going for $1300 to $1400 after being more like $400 a couple months ago.

It's all making me wonder if people aren't blowing their stimulus checks on collectibles causing a temporary spike in some of these markets.  I know Ahsoka's appearance in the new Clone Wars season sent her stuff sky high.

To be fair, he opens the listing stating he is trying to garner interest and to make him an offer.  The whole SDCC description, while partially true, ignores that the figures were at Target.  Granted, they were impossible for a lot of people to find there.  I had to get my two off the secondary market, but paid in the $30 to $40 range per figure.

I would think maybe $3600 for the lot or $100 per figure.  I have to imagine it did take a lot of work putting the set together.

So I originally passed on a few of the Movie Heroes figures thinking they were repacks when they were actually a little different.  One of them was the Zipline Boba Fett (MH24) which I think was a repack, except for the backpack being different.  I went to see if I could pick one up just now and this is what I found:

Is this guy really a $300 item in the packaging and $100+ loose?!?!?

There were a few of these that were only distributed in Canada and overseas.  I think Boba Fett was one of them that didn't even make it to Canada and had to be acquired from overseas.

I think JediJman and I traded for a bunch of these with a German guy but I never did track down this Boba Fett.  At the time he came out he was pretty expensive ($30) and I passed.

Look at the prices of boxed Mandalorian speeders and the Mandalorian Assault Transport.  :o

I passed on extra speeders for $6-$7 each at Ross. I bought the assault transport when TRU sold 2 vehicles taped end-to-end. And I remember being annoyed at having to pay $27-$30 -- which was more than the cost of one vehicle -- because I didn't like 2nd ship coupled with it. Hahaha.

Not Star Wars but peripherally related. I'm sure most of us bought them as custom fodder. Some are cool just as they are.  Look up chap mei on the sold listings on eBay.

Hard to believe there is a market for these. They won't break the bank but it's surprising that loose items typically fetch above their original retail price.

And then boxed sets like the liopleurodon (https://www.ebay.com/itm/LIOPLEURODON-Animal-Planet-Chap-Mei-Dino-Valley-Prehistoric-Sea-Mosasaurus/333547002827?epid=596785042&hash=item4da8f35bcb:g:GY8AAOSwH5Neboi8) or elasmosaurus (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Animal-Planet-Deep-Sea-Exploration-Play-set-Elasmosaurus-Toys-R-Us-Sealed/174449025202?hash=item289df8e0b2:g:1lwAAOSwZo5fXOHa) going for $100 shipped is mind-blowing.

You guys laugh, but one recently sold for $500, so it’s not as crazy as you’d think. People are going nuts for these things right now.

I wish I had bought a bunch of extras when I saw ‘em, oh well.

I almost regret leaving that Cara Dune Carbonized figure I saw on the pegs at my local Walmart.

But I've never bought anything for the reason of reselling it...hell, I've never sold anything in my collection.

Just out of curiosity I looked at sold listings after I found this $1000 one... the going rate seemed to be about $50 give or take.

My two Cara Dune figures arrived today from EE, both in great shape as usual.  I am now off to look at homes in Bermuda.

So I've got a saved search for the Force Link Royal Guard and whenever I can pick one up for less than about $10, I do... this morning, I got an email for this beauty...

If a loose one is worth even a third of the carded price, I'll be living down the street from Matt in Bermuda.

I don't understand how this happens.  Bots? A typo? Someone who clearly isn't interested in selling or hopes someone will accidentally click?  I'd love to know the story behind weird stuff like this.

That is a strange one. The seller has high-value sold and current bidded auctions from his/her decades-old personal collection. Clearly not new to the scene. I'm thinking they saw the same figure on Amazon during an insanely algorithm-based price spike and jacked it even more to see if anyone will bite.

I went ahead and sent him a message.  He said the auction was supposed to say $9.39 and that it was a mistake.   :)

 ;D

This is all actually making me wonder if the person trying to get $1000 for Cara Dune actually meant to list it for $100.

Seeing as I just got two for $13 each, that's still way high.

Someone's just trying to strike while the iron's hot.  I remember when Carrie Fisher died, Leia mini-busts were getting $400 or $500, stuff that usually sells for $100 or so...

Carded TVC 102. Ahsoka.  :o

Back in the day I ordered a couple of cases that happened to include Ahsoka. I already had the figure so the ones that came in this assortment would have just been put away.

The package never arrived.

It was painful being out the cost of those 2 cases. But after seeing what the carded figure fetches now... it's as if a time portal opened up from yesteryear and a fist shoots out and lands an uppercut to the 'nads.

I cannot believe what pretty much every figure from that online exclusive case fetches these days.  I've heard about the sealed case selling for over $1000.

Yeah if I worked at the factory I'd make a few miscards now and then when no one is looking.

The BIN price had to have been a typo and the seller must have been kicking himself after.

The same seller has Shae Vizsla and Galen Marek listed as a bundle, unpunched, for $570.  I get the feeling that they might have canceled that sale.
