Title: ANOVOS Prop Replica Clothing, Armor, and Helmets
Post by: Matt_Fury on September 4, 2015, 04:19 AM
Part of their Force Friday offerings. (http://www.anovos.com/collections/the-imperial-collection/products/star-wars-first-order-stormtrooper-helmet-accessory-standard-line-pre-order)
Title: Anovos Kylo Ren Helmet
Post by: Matt_Fury on November 4, 2015, 09:13 PM
Up for pre-order now! (http://www.anovos.com/products/star-wars-the-force-awakens-kylo-ren-helmet-accessory-pre-order)

It's a bit pricey (seeing as I was able to get a stormtrooper set of armor for about $200 less), but from what I've seen so far, they're quality is top notch!

I'd be interested in learning more about their pricing strategy.  It really kind of seems like its all over the board for Star Wars stuff.

I ordered the Stormtrooper kit for $350 (including helmet).
The Stormtrooper helmet by itself is $150.
The AT-AT driver helmet and Kylo Ren's helmet are nearly quadruple that at around $550.
Some really (seemingly) basic costumes like Imperial Officer and X-Wing pilot costumes (no helmet) are $1500.

I'd really love an X-Wing pilot costume, but can't even begin to pull the trigger at $1500 (and NO helmet?!?!) when I'm getting the full Stormtrooper kit for $350.  Its an orange jump suit with simple chest piece.  Am I'm missing something (other than greed)?

Its hard to believe its all because of volume, but who knows.

Anybody got any insight in to this?

Hey Dave.  I ordered the Stormtrooper kit as well for $350 and the reason the price was so low on that at first was to not only generate buzz, but to generate cash in order to start the production.  They tiered the pricing of the kits (and full ensemble) and staged it up to $650 for the kit if you were to purchase today.  The vast number of kits that they were able to get pre-orders for allowed them to get some seriously high grade plastics, so these costumes should look fantastic!

I did a lot of research into Anovos before I purchased and a lot of their folks are from Sideshow and are members of the RPF, so they are really trying to put out high quality items.  There's a youtube video where they talk about having to go out and make the wool for the Imperial officer's uniforms and hats because the same material wasn't made anymore.  I would also recommend you check out the forums on FISD for more info on the Stormtrooper kit, they have a tread dedicated to it and the 501st are true experts on this.

Bottom line, I'm really excited to see these kits when they start shipping next month.

I'm super stoked for the Stormtrooper kit too.  I just hope I haven't gotten myself in over my head.  Check in next year when I'm wearing the helmet and some sweats because I threw in the towel on the kit building... :P

I'm not expecting the Stormtrooper armor to be made of the same materials that they used in the movies, but I am expecting it to look like the armor and have decent quality.

I guess I can sort of buy the fancy wool, but heck, that seems like a lot of money for a basic outfit.  Maybe I don't understand the target market for this stuff and people really want the exact wool used in the costumes.

I'm still floored how an orange jumpsuit costs $1500.  Maybe they felt they had to reinvent the wheel on the material for this one too to be 100% prop accurate, but I would be 100% satisfied if they used a modern equivalent nylon/poly blend for 1/4 the price.  They priced me out / I'm not seeing the value in 100% movie accurate for that one at that price.  If they did the x-wing costume with helmet for $1000 I would consider it, but $1500 and no helmet seems outlandish to a non costumer like me.

Link to the FISD forums. (http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/)  There are a lot of good threads about building armor kits...it's going to prove to be a great resource as I've never done this before either!  It's also where I got a line on some boots.

Anybody check in to or buy a kit for a Stormtrooper blaster to go with their Anovos Stormtrooper armor kit?  I've checked out the 501st and other costuming web sites, but am struggling to find an option.  They're speaking in their costuming code and way beyond my simple knowledge of their craft.

Looks like there are some wood options, but I can't seem to find a place that has them in stock.

Anybody figure this out yet?

I can't be an unarmed Stormtrooper...

Look around eBay if you want...just be patient and don't over pay.

A lot of people talk about purchasing a doopydoos kit...the full kit is about $90.

Yeah, I looked around for that kit and couldn't seem to find a place that had them in stock.  Do you know if there is a place to buy these, or is eBay the place to get these kits as well?

Check whitearmor.net.  That's the FISD forums and a great resource for TK Costuming.

Got my shipping notice for the kit for my Stormtrooper armor.  I really hope I haven't gotten in over my head on this one.

Mine should be here tomorrow.  Did you check out the directions?

Also, go to whitearmor.net they have tons of how to's, what supplies you might need and build threads.

Yeah, I looked at the directions.  I'm reasonably handy around the house, but have never done anything like this before and don't really have any experience working with plastic, unless its a drain pipe for my house.

I get a little intimidated looking at all the stuff on whitearmor.net and all the 501st pages.  Some of those costume customizations are intense.   They need a "Stormtrooper costumes for dummies" thread.

I managed to order some white boots, but am still struggling trying to figure out where to get a kit for an E11 blaster.  I'm tempted just to buy a completed one online, but that feels like cheating.

Try this as a guide in addition to the Anovos instructions. (http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/35086-ukswraths-anovos-tk-build/)

I've never done anything like this either, but I'll just go slow and ask for help from some a friend that is in the 501st.  There's no deadline to get it done, so I might as well take my time.

Thanks for posting Matt.  It will be nice to watch a pro do this step by step and hopefully have a forum to ask dumb questions.

Some new offerings from Anovos:

Kylo Ren costume without Helmet. (http://www.anovos.com/collections/star-wars/products/star-wars-the-force-awakens-kylo-ren-costume-ensemble-pre-order)

Kylo Ren Costume with Helmet. (http://www.anovos.com/collections/star-wars/products/star-wars-the-force-awakens-kylo-ren-costume-ensemble-with-helmet-pre-order)

Premier Line First Order Stormtrooper Helmet. (http://www.anovos.com/collections/star-wars/products/star-wars-the-force-awakens-first-order-stormtrooper-helmet-accessory-premier-line-pre-order)

I like the new FO Trooper helmet.  It's the same one that was in the original kits available to only the 501st Legions for Celebration.  From what I've read about it, it's about 8 lbs!  Nice helmet but kind of heavy for trooping in.

FInally got mine and now I am gonna get rid of it.  I just don't have time to assemble and will never wear it.

That sucks Paul.  I'm still working on assembly of mine, as soon as I get some magnets I'll finally start gluing!

It's a labor of love and my 5 year old loves it!

Just bought a Dremel motor tool to help with some of the trimming and sanding.  I've yet to get started, but hope to spend most of Memorial Day Weekend working on it.

I use a dremel for some sanding, but I went with lexan scissors and the score and snap method for cutting.

It comes down to personal preference, but from what I've researched, you need to be careful cutting with a dremel.

Luckily, the cut lines on all the pieces is real easy to follow!

Dremels tend to melt plastic, more than cut it...  They're too fast, and there's no real bit for "cutting plastic" made for them.  You'd be further ahead with the Lexan Scissors and such.  You can buy a plastic scriber at Lowes cheap (look where they sell acrylic, usually near screen door crap).

If you want to ball out, look up plastic cutting tools online...  You can get some specialty stuff on ebay cheap sometimes.

I'm not sure what thicknesses you guys are dealing with but Lexan tends to be thin and VERY pliable (RC Car bodies), so scissors may not work on something super thick (1/8th or so).

Anyway, as noted above, Dremels MELT plastic more than actually cutting it.  They're a little more tolerant on poly but when you get into (what I assume) is ABS, it melts quite easily.  Thus it's ideal for vac-forming stuff, but Poly stuff you can heat and it'll retake its shape (SW figure limbs).

Not sure what these Anovos suits are made of.  Dave, that would go for sanding too...  Be light handed with it, and definitely you want one with a variable speed setting, not a cheaper one.

Paul, if you plan on donating that kit to charity, think of the children...  IE: me. :)  I'd wear it driving around I think.

EDIT: BTW, Harbor Freight if you need "rare earth magnets" Matt...  Also they sell nice riveting tools and tools that install snaps and stuff.  Might be worth looking into.  I hear that's the toughest part of putting together trooping armor (making it fit, and "stay").

The Anovos suits are made with ABS plastic, .9 or .09 thickness.  This stuff is flexible but kinda thin compared to other armors out there.  So far, from what I've seen from whitearmor.net ad RPF, although these tend to be thin compared to other suits, they are very well made.

I recently added a First Order Stormtrooper helmet to my collection.

I need to take new photos of my office.  :D

Take a look at the shin pieces....make sure the inner portion is slightly longer than the outer portion.

Otherwise, it's coming along great!

I have a little tweaking to my belt to complete and then I'll be approved in the 501st!

I've got one of the only Centurion's in the state keeping an eye on my progress. We must have spent an hour texting back-and-forth trying to determine which shin piece was correct. I think we got it right, finally, but it wasn't easy. So far, my biggest obstacle to hitting Centurion will be, I think, the placement of the outer strips on my return edges. I trimmed too much on one arm and had to compensate by giving more room on the edge. It might come down to how favorable the lighting will be and how nitpicky the staff are feeling at the time. Here lately, I've seen maybe two or three guys being told to fix stuff that isn't even part of the CRL.

So today I received the Mandalorian Helmet from Anovos.

I ordered through BBTS so I wouldn't have to pay in full and hope my item arrived someday.  I highly recommend going through BBTS or Entertainment Earth instead of dealing with Anovos directly.  If you read the Anovos thread over at RPF, you can understand why.

- This helmet is fantastic!  It's fiberglass, whereas my other Anovos Helmets (Stormtrooper and FO Stormtrooper) are ABS so the Nadalorian helmet is much heavier, but it's comfortable when on.

- It's look is amazing, might be a little too much weathering on it, but that's a minor gripe.

- The liner inside is a nice quality, Anovos also supplies 5 different helmet pads with Velcro to put inside to ensure a good fit for different sized heads.  I ended up using two of the rectangular ones on the cheeks in order to keep my nose from rubbing the visor.

- The visor is actually a double pane.  It's easy to see out, but no one will be able to see your eyes in it.

This helmet was pretty pricey, but it came out nice, my only real complaint is that they have cheaped out on the box compared to the FOTK helmet I purchased and the Imperial Officer's cap I have.  Granted, I had always planned on displaying the helmet out of the box, but it would've been nice to have a nice looking box considering the money I paid for this.

I can't find a decent way to upload photos to the forum anymore, but I might do a quick video of it and put it on my Youtube channel and put it in here for you to see it.

Edit:

Quick video review and a comparison with the rest of my Anovos Helmets. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ErKYftVY4)
