The Vintage Collection / Re: Big Items of the Future!
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:44 PM »
I've seen a few tweets suggesting that the postponement of the 3D films means any chances we had of "big" stuff to go with them is gone too...

Also saw a few tweets that indicated that Hasbro pretty specifically said retail can't handle a $200 Sail Barge (re: #bringonethebarge petition).  :(

You look at today's presentation and it's VERY CLEAR.  We need to look at 2013 as a year to essentially reset the line and Star Wars as a whole.  Until Episode VII gets into production and the Disney hype machine can get things rolling, I think we're looking at a pretty bleak year.  Meaning no large vehicles.  Especially when you don't have media to support the release of that large vehicle.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Kmart Vintage Ewok Catapult w/Ewoks
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:36 PM »
People can decry K-Mart stores for being kind of dirty & rundown, but they actually handled their 2012 exclusives reasonably well.  I'm looking forward to seeing some imagery of the catapult and Ewoks soon.  Too bad we didn't get an image of this from the presentation.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Amazon Vintage TIE Interceptor
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:34 PM »
Nice to see Amazon getting some exclusives.  With the distribution fiasco at brick & mortar retail last year, Amazon proved to be one of the more reliable retail avenues for figures.

I hope this TIE Interceptor has the new style cockpit and ejector seat.  But with Hasbro only showing mainline offerings and not exclusives, I guess that's the only image we've got to go on.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Toy R Us Vintage Republic Gunship
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:32 PM »
Just from an investment standpoint, I'm going to pick up at least a couple of these.  For some crazy reason the previous Gunship releases go UP in value.  The Clone Wars Command Gunship from 2003 or so goes for ridiculous cash!  And so do some of the other versions, too.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Amazon Vintage Slave I w/Carbonite Block
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:28 PM »
Very happy to see this version of Slave I offered at last.  And I've REALLY, REALLY been wanting a new Han Solo in Carbonite for years.  The POTF2 one just didn't suffice.

Based on the imagery from the showroom, I guess that none of the exclusives were on hand to be photographed.  The boxed photo of Slave I looks pretty cool, but I'd like to see more of it.  AND the Carbonite block.

Saga Legends / Re: Target "The Rise of Darth Vader" Battle Pack
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:21 PM »
Wow.  Odd figure lineup for this set if the Hasbro photo is accurate.

-MH Darth Vader with electronic lightsaber
-TVC Emporer Palpatine / Darth Sidious (ROTS)
-Shock Trooper (which version is unclear)
-Chopper Droid (ROTS)
-Operating table

Now, if you didn't get that Sidious figure, then this set could be worth it for that figure alone.  But aside from that, this set is kind of "EHHH".

The Vintage Collection / Re: Kmart Imperial Scanning Crew 2-Pack
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:18 PM »
Very glad to hear about this set.  I'll definitely be picking up a few of these 2-packs, just like last years AT-ST crews.  I had been hoping that Hasbro would follow through and give us the 2nd Scanning Trooper as a basic figure as they had originally planned.  But it seems that since large accessories with basic figures are a thing of the past, this is the best avenue for doing that.  I'm okay with that compromise.  I just hope that with these 2 new Scanning Troopers we get new heads for both, and not one portrait that's the same as the TLC RED version.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Toys R Us Vintage Bigg's X-Wing Fighter
« on: February 9, 2013, 08:15 PM »
THIS is very cool on Hasbro's part.  Ever since they introduced the larger X-Wing they've been giving us some individual fighters along the way.  First it was Luke, obviously.  Then Red Leader.  And there was Wedge, too.  Add in a couple of more renditions with Luke, of course (Dagobah, Trench Run).  And now Biggs.  I've got to say that I'm pretty happy about this.  And it's actually coordinated with a Biggs basic figure release.

I actually passed on the Trench Run X-Wing.  But I'm hoping that some of the updates that were in that version will carry over to this new Biggs version.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: Toy Fair 2013
« on: February 9, 2013, 03:04 PM »
Interesting bit on the exclusives.  We got announcements for exclusives at the following retailers:

-Toys R Us (Biggs X-Wing, Geonosis Gunship)
-Target (Vader origin 4-pack)
-K-Mart (Ewok catapult, Scanning Trooper 2-pack)
-Amazon (TIE Interceptor, TESB Slave I w/ Han Solo in Carbonite)

No mention whatsoever of a WalMart exclusive.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Clone Wars Wave 30 (2013 Wave 1)
« on: February 9, 2013, 02:59 PM »
Well, no CW shown at Toy Fair.  It appears that this wave truly is the last gasp of the animated Clone Wars line.

It looks like they're specifically trying to evoke the setting of the Carbon Freeze Chamber in TESB.  Darkness combined with that orange lighting.

Honestly...it looks pretty drab from that single photo.  I'd like to see some more imagery.

The presentation is going to begin shortly.  Twitter & Facebook look like they're going to be our look at the presentation while it happens.

***OMFG.  They're starting the presenation with My Little Pony?  Ugh.

Saga Legends / Re: Saga Legends "Mission Series" Figure 2-Packs

Interesting.  I definitely like the droid.  It actually reminds me a bit more of the search droids on Utapau in ROTS more than anything else.

Collector's Tips / Re: Overhead Lighting
« on: February 8, 2013, 06:28 PM »
Nice score!  I think that if you're going to have shelving on three walls, the U shaped configuration is probably the best way to go.  And a dimmer circuit is probably going to be your best bet in terms of a wall switch.  And if you go with that U config and you're ambitious, three seperate dimmer circuits might be a nice way to tailor the lighting.

I've heard some people express concerns about how lighting might lead to yellowing on lighter colored figures (Stormtroopers, Clones, etc) as well as cardbacks, posters, etc.  A dimmer might seem like a luxury, but if you can minimize the intensity of the light to prevent that possible yellowing or fading, why not do it?

As for any additional lighting?  It sounds like your room is medium sized.  But those halogen track lights will definitely throw a lot of light.  I've got a track light with only 4 mini halogens (similar to the ones on your track) in my kitchen, and it's slightly smaller than your space.  And those 4 track lights plus a hi-hat light provide plenty of light for that room.

My hopes?  That Hasbro can find a balance in the 3.75" figure system to keep it both viable AND profitable.  So what does that mean?

Distribution that works.
Working closer with the retailers to get figures, etc to stores in a timely and even fashion on a regular schedule.

Balanced Character Selection / Case Packs
We've seen what happens when some fan oriented figures come to market in too high of a quantity.  The fact is that I can STILL find a Yarna as well as a Willrow Hood on the pegs of a TRU store if I really wanted to.  Those figures are now going on 4 - 5 years old.  And this is clearly a case where short-packing is appropriate.  That 15th cantina alien probably needs to be put in this category, and probably needs to be short packed.

There's also a major fact that collectors need to get over:  core characters NEED to stay in the line with a higher degree of regularity than might suit our own sensibilities.  Sure, collectors may have some 30+ renditions of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Yoda or Obi-Wan Kenobi.  But these are the characters that sell to parents & kids.  If we want the line to remain viable & profitable, these characters need to be readily available to the much larger market segment that is parents & their kids.

Aside from that, what am I hoping to see?

Continuing on with realistic versions of Clone Wars characters.  The rumblings are that the Clone Wars animated line is coming to a close.  So why not continue the trend of making realist versions of Clone Wars characters?  We already have three of those in Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, plus another two scheduled in Mace Windu and Rex.  There are definitely some prime candidates for figures from seasons 4 and 5 that might sell reasonably well.  Darth Maul?  Death Watch?  Savage Opress?  Darth Sidious?

From the OT, there's still plenty of fertile ground.  I can think of a number of renditions of core characters that would be most welcome.  Throw in some of Jabba's goons, Imperials and Rebels and you've got some good 2nd & 3rd tier characters.  And with the PT?  TPM and it's characters need some time off after the TPM 3-D fiasco.  AOTC and ROTS still have some options in terms of character selection, but Hasbro needs to be incredibly selective.

Also, how about working in some more video game characters?  Figures from KOTOR and SWTOR have been pretty well received.  Again, they need to be done very selectively, but if Hasbro is going to keep up with the broadening Star Wars fan market which is very much about video games, they need to approach this market segment seriously.
