Title: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: Jesse James on May 16, 2012, 11:03 PM
K-Mart gets an exclusive, again, that you may or may not care about...

First, (http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/1-08/012Vin_KMartVintyBoxedROTJATSTReveal01_TN.jpg) (http://www.sandtroopers.com/sandwatch/hasbro/20120516/)
Sandtroopers.com has the scoop on this, so go check it out!  Clicky the image to see it.

But second...  Yeah, you own this right?  Well, not really...  This is the AT-ST repaint, at least it seems anyway, attempting to recreate the walker that Chewie and his little dingleberries attempt to commandeer for the Rebel Alliance!

So assuming it's not particularly cheap, but not particularly expensive, where does this fit in your collecting world?

For me, this is an easy purchase...  I have literally a stack of AT-ST's from Wal-Mart...  I'm semi-hopeful they're going to fix the walking joints so that they're less prone to cracking, but that'll only be known with time and opening one up.  What I'm more geeked about is the deco.  The original's deco was plain which I liked for army building.  The 2nd one was an inaccurate Hoth one since that walker has significant differences in its design.

This one though, I like that they're trying to give fans the specific walker with the damage on the nose, which served as the life-size prop/set piece, which Chewie and the Ewok hijackers take.  :)  It'll be THE walker I display since I want to display it specifically with its appropriate Ewoks and Chewbacca.  Might even have it standing over a destroyed one of the Wal-Mart walkers.

This is far cooler than the B-Wing, or TRU's half-assed Y-Wing.  I think this is, somewhat shockingly, K-Mart for the win.

Cool!  Thanks for sharing Jesse.  I'll probably get one if I can find it on sale.  It's a little harder for me to stomach given how many AT-ST's we already have.  You had to know this was coming once they redid the mold.

Post by: Jesse James on May 16, 2012, 11:20 PM
Yeah I'm kind of shocked who got it...

To me there's no question, this is a good one.

It's like if say they put out another Snowspeeder, all beat up and painted nice, and in a vinty box again, as Luke's Snowspeeder...  Would you be mad?  Maybe, depending on the price.

That's the kicker with this, is the price.  the B-WIng wasn't too cheap but not too bad either compared to the original release of the B-Wing with the Ten Numb figure in the POTJ days.

If this is $30 I'm in without question.  If it's $40 I'll probably still be in but maybe a little miffed.  If it's more and there's a ton of them I may wait.  If it's more and they're scarce, I'll probably be in but begrudgingly.

If it's $20 nobody shall have it but me.  OK, not really, but I'll probably pick up two if it's that cheap, which I have no hope of it being that cheap.

I'm never really mad about releases unless I can't find them.  I always have the option not to buy if I don't like it.   ;)

The box looks great, the repaint looks great.... but what the heck is it with Hasbro re-releasing things too soon after it was already out?  Certain Saga Legends like Snowspeeder Luke, the Dewback, and now this?  Give it a few years for collectors just into the hobby to need it, and something new for us in the meantime!

I think this is striking while the Vinty iron is hot.  They haven't done that yet in the vinty recreation box.  Now they have.  That's my guess on what they're doing anyway.  I think if it isn't done yet, look for them to try it.  Wouldn't be shocked if they tried a Speederbike soon.  :-X

Well no K-Marts anywhere near me but I might be interested in one because, as Jesse said, the joints in mine (the Legacy Wal-Mart version) are cracked and loose. And I've hardly ever played with tested out the articulation on the thing!

I actually don't have this one yet (even passed on the WM one on clearance  :-\ ) so I may pick this up if it's not too pricey.

I'm betting $30 to $40.  The B-Wing was $40 IIRC and that's about what the POTJ one was actually.  Not bad really if you wanted it.  It's $29.99 now too, clearanced fairly quickly.

So I take it this thing is a complete surprise? No inklings in previous Q&A's or at Toy Fair?

Interesting.

I don't understand why they would give it to K-Mart though, or why they would want it. That company has been bankrupt for like 5 years now. They just announced another huge wave of store closings at the beginning of the year.

The few left around here are still stuck with a bunch of B-Wings that are not moving.

My money's on $40 or more.  This is K-Mart we're talking about.  Last time I was there, mid-size ships were $35, so an exclusive should probably be at least that.

I'm not sure nay KMarts still exist in the Twin Cities.  I hope they make this available online...

Yea! Always happy to have OT vehicle variants. Figured it was a matter of time before we got a repaint like this. I'm down for two.

I like this. I agree with Jesse - I wouldn't be surprised if Target was getting a new Speeder Bike in a Vintage box just like they got the Tauntaun and Landspeeder.

I bet you're right- and I hope they allocate no more than 2 or so to each store.  Hasbro has GOT to get a better sense of demand than their record of the last couple years.

Well that's not Hasbro, that'd be K-Mart and what they want at their stores...  I can't recall how many B-Wings any given store got in, off-hand.  I'm sure Hasbro would sell K-Mart as many of this as they want...  It'll be up to KM to buy enough.  After the B-WIng though, they could be more conservative.  :-\

It would have been cooler if it came with a squashed Ewok patty.

Figures with this would have mde it a must have. I have 3 WM ones and 2 Hoth ones (which are so flimsy compared to the WM one.)

I may get one but I will be selling the two hoth ones to make room.
Title: Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: Scockery on May 17, 2012, 10:15 PM
I missed the first two release of this AT-ST. The wal-marts here never got the first release, while it sat at other stores around the country. And the Hoth set sold out fairly quick.

I heard they had breakage problems. That makes me a bit weary of this one, since I have little faith in Hasbro's ability to correct flaws.

I wonder if they couldn't squeeze this into the starfighter assortment and they are being greedy by making it exclusive again and again. But then I don't own one, probably bigger in person.

Now, why won't they do something with that At-St driver mold?

Even with ball joints it would be too much, but I'd still buy a couple.  :P

I can't emphasize enough how sorely this set is needed. From a collecting stand point anyway.

It would be great if they assort the Speederbikes if Target is getting them.
A revised Endor Leia with Speederbike and a Scouttrooper with Speederbike. Since both figures are on Vint cards already they make the most sense to me to do. This should be in the deluxe box like the CW vehicles/figures, It would be nice to see more OT offerings in that series. Screw the Vint package on this all it does is inflate the price and give you less value. It might actually help that segment sell instead of rotting like they are now.

We don't have any K-Marts in town, but it is kind of a neat exclusive.  I wouldn't mind getting one, but probably won't chase it down either.  I'm always all for these reboxed vintage items, and would love to see more OT vehicles (or even beasts) get this treatment too.  I'm sort of surprised we haven't seen more of those this year, with the rumors of "Vintage" going away in 2013.  I guess they may save it for if/when the OT makes it to 3D release, and bring back the vintage look.

What if they wanted to recreate the vintage feel and give us a vintage jointed Scout?  That would suck huh. ?  I've been wanting updated speederbikes for years! - oh and a snazzy new Scout would be the bees knees...

I wish I had an end game like that. If I had one, it might be an incredible cross-sections accurate, nicely articulated snow scout.

Walmart Endor version & Target Hoth version

Yep, the legs are on the wrong side of the body and the head is turned backwards. It makes it look like it's trying to poop out an Ewok.

I'm just hoping that the rumored multi-pack of Chewbacca with the Ewok hijackers will finally come out in conjunction with this release.  Add in an AT-ST Driver basic figure release and this version of the AT-ST would make a whole lot more sense.

I know.  Distribution has been such a mess for the past year+ that it's wishful thinking.  But if they make the AT-ST hijackers an exclusive (Target, please!), then it could be a more feasible possibility.

Speaking of which - that AT-ST driver that was in the Assault on Hoth Battlepack - why couldn't he have been put on a Vintage card this year to accomplish three things:

1) Keep the costs of a wave down by re-releasing an existing figure
2) Make him available for army-building
3) Get him out there for the Endor-themed re-release of the AT-ST

Sometimes it becomes so painfully obvious that they have NO IDEA what they're doing running this line.

Thanks for the suggestion Pete! The AT-ST Driver is a great figure. We are continuously working with our retail partners to design case assortment that meet certain army builder to main character ratios while balancing getting merchandise to the stores to meet collector demand.

We are currently working on our product line-up for 2013 so we will look into how we can get this requested figure back into the mix. Stay tuned.  ;)

*bump* for official Hasbro confirmation @ SDCC.

With the two 2-packs coming, I'm definitely buying this one and already planning a nice "Endor Battle" set-up in my SW room...  I'll have to dig my 30AC logs out of the storage box to put out with it.  :)

What rolls down stairs

and over your neighbor's dog?
What's great for a snack,

It'd be nice if those two packs each included a log.

I suppose you can make your own, though. (Not gonna make the joke I was gonna make...)

I was wondering if those packs were based on the obscure ROTJ sets with the speeder bike, imperials and ewoks....and they are...but with less stuff.

Yakface.com is reporting this has been found...

While there's a grumble by their finder on the vehicle's paintjob, I have to say I think the feet are pretty muddy in the movie, and I thought the battle damage looked good...  perfect?  Or model-like quality like 1:18 military stuff I've got?  No, but Hasbro never knocked out insanely great decoes...  I like that they got the nose plate blast mark, and some weathering.

The feet might be a little overly muddy but they're a bit muddier than I think people are remembering.

Then again I'm sure if this was the other way around we'd have anger that it's not muddy or blasted enough or something.

I'm just glad a vehicle they put out has a significant deco change since I have a small army of the WM one and 1 Hoth Attack one, and this one at least will stand out significantly, and it's a clear movie-specific deco.

Personally, I applaud Hasbro for putting the effort in at all, especially when they mentioned specifically in our SDCC Q&A how expensive decoes are and why they're not doing the weathering as much as they used to.  :-\  I suppose the more intricate it gets, the more pricey it can get as well.  Maybe I'm just too easy.
Title: Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: CHEWIE on August 6, 2012, 10:00 PM
Maybe I'm just too easy.

And maybe I'm just too hard on Hasbro on this.

What bothers me is the "head" has what looks like a really, really good paint scheme that puts some depth into the sculpt, and almost looks like a matte finish... looks like top quality!

But the body and legs seem to be completely void of paint.  It looks like they just skipped that altogether... then the feet have a lot of brown paint... seems to be a little overkill to me... and it makes the foot the joint really looks too clean then.

I know it's just a toy, but I think they got a little zealous on the mud paint, and should have put less into that and a little more into weathering the legs/body.  I can't complain too much I guess, because I have a few of the Wal-Mart version and am pretty happy with those.
Title: Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: Jesse James on August 6, 2012, 11:52 PM
I thought the body looked ok...  There's some grey shade differences on the AT-ST models so I'm fine with that.  I could do with a little less mud too, but IIRC there's a good bit of stuff on the feet in various scenes...  I'm thinking in particular, close-ups of AT-ST feet like with the Ewok hammering on them and stuff.

I may attach some greenery to the toes...  Snaz it up a bit.

Post by: LandotheScoundrel on August 7, 2012, 06:58 AM
If I find this, I'll probably use a little nail polish remover to take out some of the brown paint on the feet. Plus, I've wanted to weather one of my AT-ST's...maybe this will be the one.

Finally got a chance to open up my Kmart AT-ST and I'll confirm some of the reports on the legs.  My AT-ST's legs are wobbly as all get out.  It took me three or four tries to find a point where it will stand on it's own.  The paint job is awesome, but the legs sort of bum me out a bit.  :-\

The legs are definitely a softer/weaker plastic, which does kind of suck. I'm glad the legs aren't brittle so the joints shouldn't crack easily like with the last two releases, but it's considerably harder to balance the toy in a standing position.

Noticing everyone's thoughts on how well, or not well, the AT-ST stands...  Working on some possible fixes but coming up sort of short on it.  The weak joint above the ankle joint is a real pain in the ass.  Worst joint on it, unfortunately.

I've tried tightening that one, but it's done nothing really and you have to be careful not to strip the plastic at all.  I'm thinking of taking that joint apart and seeing why there is so much play right there...  Not much working to fix it though, in the early stages so far.

The weird thing is I bet a little bit of lead weighting in the bottoms of the feet, which are hollow, would probably balance it out a tad without adding weight where it can't take it.

Here's a funny thing about the two AT-ST designs that, if this one had the Hoth version's design with the tensioner on the lower leg part, the toy might not have the balance issues.  Good designing on the part of the the original AT-ST model-maker.  :D  He knew that was a weaker point I guess that sort of needed a spring to hold it tight.

I actually found these today at a ghetto K-Mart here locally. It was sort of interesting for about 2 seconds but not something I'd consider purchasing. No sign of the TCW Fox wave people are claiming is showing up there, although I did see possible remnants as they had a new Obi there.

I'd love to get one of these as I've held off, but hearing about the issues with its legs (along with the Ewok poop coating the foot) and standing, I might have to pass.
Title: Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: Jesse James on August 14, 2012, 04:26 PM
I'll be honest, mine stands ok...  It's not perfect, and not as good as the original WM one, but I wouldn't say it topples easily either.  I'm determined to see if there's a way to fix the inside of the lower leg joint though, to make it more tight.

Maybe I lucked out though, but mine is standing ok.

For the record if you don't have a KM, mine had 5 this week and I'd probably be able to help someone out getting one if they want it.  I got mine standing fine...  I prefer it standing a little taller as it didn't really rest the way Hasbro wants it to, and it definitely was a little taller when walking, but for now mine's standing just fine.  It tips forward easily if you give it a nudge, but it holds figures ok and stands ok so I'm happy.

I think any issue with the muddy feet is overblown, personally.  Watch the Ewok riding the foot beating on it.  The close-ups of feet, they seem pretty mucky and even have vegetation stuck to them.
Title: Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST
Post by: Adam_Pawlus on September 12, 2012, 07:02 PM
Mine won't stand very well but I did come up with a crappy "fix" for it that seems to be working so far.  The pressure point for me seems to be one of the two "knees", basically the joint right after the leg joint where it connects to the assembly on the body.  (The highest, farthest-back one.)

I tried a few things and what worked was putting some tiny slivers of cardstock in between the plastic parts like an Oreo cookie.  The good news is that it stands, no problems, but the bad news is that it's basically only going to work as a display piece.  I'm sure someone who has expertise with the Krazy Glue/Clear Nail Polish joint fixes on action figures can come up with something more elegant, but for now this is working pretty well for me.   As it's my third AT-ST of this mold, and it's not like I futz with the others all that much, I think I can live with it but given the price it's more than a little irritating.

I've been dragging my feet to type this up because I hate taking pictures mostly, but I fixed my AT-ST a little while ago after a little experimenting.  This, to me, was the best option.  It's solid, it's not cheap feeling, it's not going to permanently change your AT-ST at all, it also is virtually invisible, and it won't damage the walker either.

I'm big on NOT altering a toy in my collection permanently without having a 2nd unaltered one.  I wasn't buying a 2nd AT-ST just so I could make one stand by damaging it through glue or something, so I wanted a fix I could just pop off as easily as I put it together, and this was it.

All you really need is a (small) phillips screwdriver most people probably have and a couple 5/16 internal washers, and a little spike of metal (sewing needle or whatever, something thin, I used a scribe like a little dental pick).  The washers can be had at any hardware store, or I'd imagine Wal-Mart even.  I got mine out of just my random assortments of stuff like that I keep around.

K-Mart Vintage AT-ST Wobbly Ankle Joint Fix Tutorial! (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1347521356,73627,)

Click, fix, enjoy.

If any of it is confusing drop me a note in here and I'll attempt clarifying it as soon as I'm on which is varying a lot these days, but this is honestly pretty straight forward stuff.

My walker looks like a beast standing now high above my Endor figures.  :)  Can't wait to add some figures to it too (which it now actually can hold them without collapsing).

I only had one joint I'm having a big issue with, just as a note.  Everyone seemed to have a problem with the one joint, not the others, though overall I'd say this walker is generally less stable than the previous versions.  Mine's a LOT better after this fix, but I wouldn't say it's perfect.  My Attack On Hoth and Wal-Mart AT-ST's are all a little tipsy though if bumped hard enough, and so is my Endor Vintage AT-ST now, but it's as sturdy as my Attack on Hoth one I'd say, if not more so.

I put concrete in the foot and made it stable. it needed weight on the bottom of the feet to keep it standing the joints are fine. my boys have 2 and they move them like they should.

Strap dead Ewoks to the feet for extra weight.

Thanks for the guide Jesse! I'll definitely try it out before I display that mini-behemoth.

By all accounts I've red, the joints are NOT fine on any that I've heard about till yours.  Guess you got lucky?

I hate to be a bother, but there seems to be something wrong with the link to the fix tutorial on the main page.

Or did you mean the link I put in this thread?

It's on the main page. Now it says: Error: Invalid start/end news items.

I'm using Chrome, but it works fine in IE. Just on my end I guess.

This was in the article text from the link above:

Error: Invalid start/end news items.

And that's using IE

That last comma is always a bitch -

This:
http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1347521356,73627,
="Error: Invalid start/end news items."

But this, with the little comma added in the hyperlink:
http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1347521356,73627,
 (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1347521356,73627,)
= what you seek.

For some reason the "auto-linker" in the forum software always drops the last comma, like is did in Jesse's post there.  And for some reason Chrome drops the last comma sometimes...  I don't really know the whys'hows for that though.

I always forget that damn comma...  my email drops that too so I have to make sure it's html'd in or it doesn't work as a clickable link.

Weird that the Google Chrome would not work right though, even when it's coded right on the front page and IE uses it fine.  Very odd.  :-\

Armed with my new pack of 5/16" internal tooth lock washers from Menards, I took JJ's advice and fixed up my K-Mart AT-ST tonight.  She stands like a beauty now.  Thanks again for the tip/tutorial, Jesse. :)

I was looking more closely at mine and it seems that, that joint isn't an issue for me. It the upper one that causes all of mine to sag.

Hoping mine will magically fix itself in the box somehow.  I did notice the legs on my Target AT-ST legs were much looser then the WM version was and took a bit of work to get it to stand properly.  Shame to hear this one is worse, but hey...I bought this one for the box (to stay sealed in) so I don't really care.

I must be doing something wrong with my K-Mart walkers because both of mine have been standing with no problems for the last couple of weeks. I even added a driver to one vehicle with no issues. I am expecting to find them toppled over on my shelves one of these days, so as soon as that happens I plan to apply Jesse's fix.

I'm sure a lot of it is simply luck of the draw on the plastic that was used during whatever run it was through...  It's a very slight problem where it could be just a hair away from toppling or standing fine forever...  or toppling over time.  Mine was fine out of the box but after I played with it posed it some during happy fun time an evalution period, it started crapping out on me.

Well I never really played with posed mine, so that might have been the saving grace. The plastic quality really sucks though... I would love if Hasbro found a mid-point between the softness of this release and the brittleness of the 2009 and 2010 releases.

Sooo... just some random thought on the AT-ST... I recently got a few more of the "older" releases of the new style AT-ST, and they  actually made me appreciate the new K-Mart release more despite the soft/weak plastic. One of the TLC Endor walkers I opened had TWO cracked leg joints right out of the box, and one of those joints was cracked in two separate places which prevented the toy from standing. While the other three AT-STs I opened don't have any broken joints, the joints are all very stiff and I am fearful of moving the legs and having parts crack. Both of the K-Mart walkers I have had no problems out of the box and I am not worried at all about the joints cracking, so it would appear that the soft plastic fixed the breaking problem while creating other issues.

The various problems plaguing all three releases got me thinking about how Hasbro could improve the mold for the inevitable fourth release. The ideal solution seems to be using a plastic with quality somewhere in-between the types that have been used; plastic soft enough to reduce brittle joints yet strong enough to keep from toppling over or folding up. If changing the plastic quality isn't a viable alternative, I actually wouldn't mind seeing a reduction in leg articulation. I barely attempted to make full use of the current articulation when I first got an AT-ST back in 2009; when I tried to achieve more dynamic poses, I found it nearly impossible to balance the toy. I think having only two joints instead of five would result in a sturdier toy all around and still allow for some decent pose-ability.

How do you guys feel about the current AT-ST sculpt? Has anybody had the same problems with joints breaking as I have, or am I just picking all the winners? What solutions would you suggest for Hasbro to improve the toy, or are you happy just modifying (using methods like Jesse's) or gluing if needed?

Unfortunately when we had a software issue late last year, we lost that story.  I need to rewrite and repost, but if you need something sooner I can type up something for you man.  It's pretty simple.  I need to try finding the pics that went with the tutorial though to make it easier for folks.  :-\
