Gentle Giant / Re: Gentle Giant Mini-Busts
« on: August 4, 2010, 11:48 AM »
Thanks for the note.  I ordered one.  Not sure if I should have given my general ability to find these cheaper on the secondary market but I like this one enough to actually pay retail for it.

I've been following auctions of this one and they have been going for $125, but they're also brand new and hadn't been easily available.

McQuarrie concept Darth Vader is now in stock at Gentle Giant's site.  Looks like they only let you order one.

Got my pre-order in for the McQuarrie Vader.

How many are members allowed to pre-order?

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: 100 Best Places to Live - 2010 Edition

Interesting the Minnesota typically rates fairly highly regardless of which particular list you look at though...

That's what happens when your effective tax rate is 60% - you get the best parks, best schools, best arts, etc.  You just don't have any money left to spend on those things  :'(

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

Anyone have a good recommendation on a book(s) for teaching yourself CSS and how to design html4/5 compliant sites with it?

No.  I usually just use the source copy and paste method from sites I like.  You can usually figure out the code without too much trouble and build a library of functionality in no time.  But then again I'm not overly creative and like to take as many shortcuts as possible.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: America: The Story of Us

I enjoyed the shows last night, but was a little torn by how quickly they moved through the content.

I liked the fact that all of the video recreations, etc. seemed to be all new and very well done.  However after watching the in depth multi-part Revolution series a few years ago I was unsure if I liked how quickly "The Story of Us" moved through some really meaty sections of the Revolutionary War and completely left out other key parts.  They dwelled on other areas that were colorful, but maybe less important.

I felt that they could have done a better job telling how we got our asses kicked in a lot of battles and were close to losing the whole thing, only to pull out a victory in the end.  They seemed to say that "a bunch of stuff happened", Washington camped at Valley Forge in the snowy, poopy mud, then we won the battle at Yorktown, and then we hung our flag up and smiled.

Overall I liked it and learned some new things I hadn't known before, but didn't feel this was a very deep or accurate telling of the Revolutionary War.

Star Wars Universe / Re: Star Wars on Blu-ray?

They could get the newly minted Blu-Ray discs done this year, but they put it off a year so they could produce the repainted figures, ships, books, CDs, etc. that will tie in with the giant media blitz  ::)

Yeah, all of my "commodity" auctions for things like POTF2 Yoda figures are only domestic.  If I've got something somewhat rare I often list it internationally if I feel it can get significantly more for it elsewhere.  And I pad my international shipping quotes to only send via trackable methods to deal with the potential headaches.

If its too late to change the auction listing, just figure out what the price would be to ship to the potential bidder's country and send him/her a quote.  When the auction completes just have them overpay you via PayPal the correct amount to make up the difference in shipping.  I've done this a bunch of times.  Just make it clear with the potential bidder how the transaction will be completed.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Pacific (HBO)
« on: March 17, 2010, 12:06 AM »
Overall I thought the first episode was decent, but not great.  Probably on par with an average Band of Brothers episode.

It'll be interesting to see how they string this series together.

Band of Brothers was great because you got to stay with the same characters and watch them grow/interact throughout the war.

I can't imagine they'll be able to do that with The Pacific as very few ground units fought in more than a couple of battles.  I can already see that they're trying to flashback/tie neighborhoods and friends together to create some ties from episode to episode, but I still think it will be mostly isolated stories.  I'll also be interested to see if they tell anything from the Navy's point of view due to how important a role they played in the Pacific war.

I got to see a free preview on DirecTV, but don't have HBO, so I'm going to have to wait until this comes out on DVD to finish the series.

Well, you know if you've been working all night long, you just put on whatever is laying around.

Actually I think this is what she "works" in.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: What HDTV to buy - LCD, Plasma, DLP
« on: February 28, 2010, 10:30 PM »
I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but figured this was as good a place as any.  Sort of a technical question, since we're new to the HDTV world here.  We just picked up our first HDTV, a 42" LG 1080p, 120 Hz model.  We also previously had a blu ray player (gift for Christmas, with intentions of getting this TV eventually), and I picked up the HDMI cable with the TV today as well.  Anyways, got everything hooked up, and we're very happy with it.  We tried out a few of the blu ray movies we already had just to see them, and the picture looks great.  Here's my question though, it seems that the movies still have the "black bars" on the top and bottom.  I guess I always thought when you had a widescreen TV, those would be gone, but perhaps our settings are wrong.  I have both the player and the TV set on 16:9.  I know we're not "losing any picture" like a lot of fullscreen fans think is happening with those black bars, but I just thought those would be gone with a widescreen television (or closer to it).  Just curious if anyone knew what we're doing wrong, if anything.

It can depend on the movies you're watching on Blu-Ray as well.  Blu-Ray widescreen formats like anamorphic will still leave black bars on the top and bottom.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: CW Clone Turbo Tank
« on: November 13, 2009, 11:48 AM »
I know some have complained its not movie/cartoon accurate, not big enough, etc.  But I think as far as a kid's toy this thing is pretty sweet.

I brought my ($75) Turbo Tank in the house the other day and my 2 year old son spotted it.  He never used to give my toy piles a second glance, but now he just hollers "out" or "open" when he sees something he likes.

Well he went ape sh*t when he saw the Turbo Tank box.  20 minutes later it was assembled, rolling, firing missiles, playing sounds, shooting a BARC speeder, etc.  My son was a big twitchy, sweaty, giggling mess an hour later.

I've got to say, that is probably one of the nicest designed "toys" I've ever seen.  At first I was really concerned when I let him at the $100 toy, but its really well designed and quite sturdy.  Most of the doors, guns, etc. pop off when too much pressure is applied.  I was quickly impressed with the design and confidently walked away while my son had at it.

As a 38 year old "collector" I can nitpick.  But as a 38 year old "dad" I can say without a doubt Hasbro nailed it.

I got 5 of my 6 today. I will dig out my 1999 one and take a pick to compare the difference.
This is a great mail away!

Let me know what you find.  I'm interested to know if there are any significant differences or if they're nearly exactly the same.

Fair enough...it was more of a rhetorical complaint. The flip side of living in MINN would be all the increased competition looking for new stuff in the stores. It would be nice to be part of an actual SW community though.

I do like this site. I actually find it more robust than the other handful of sites I can access here at work.

We generally don't compete with each other for the most part - it's more of a congrats to who scores what first.  We're good at helping each other out with pretty much any toy line that any of us are looking for which is pretty awesome.  Nice to have dozens of eyes out there at multiple stores so you don't have to go driving all over town.  I'm sure there's plenty of others just like you in VA that just aren't part of the online collecting community - or they just don't care to be.

Glad you like the site!

Agreed.  Mike and I shop at the same store(s) in MN and frequently help each other find stuff, as well as the rest of the crew.  There are more than enough toys to go around.  If it weren't for the MN crew I would have spent significantly more money on my collection over the years.  Since I joined the MN crew a few years back I haven't had to make a purchase on eBay to fill a hole in my collection due to a hard to figure or exclusive.  I did the same thing when I lived in Kansas City.  Hopefully you find a VA crew to help you as well.  Makes collecting much easier.
