Title: Cartoon Watchers?
Post by: Brian on July 14, 2003, 09:37 AM
I was just thinking this weekend, and was curious if there are many cartoon watchers out there?  My wife sometimes gives me a hard time because I watch them from time to time (although she will watch with me)...but I guess I just enjoy them.  Currently, I watch X-Men Evolutions, the 90s X-men series that is on ABC Family, occasionally the Spiderman cartoon on ABC Family, Masters of the Universe (although I haven't seen it for awhile), and I also caught the new MTV Spiderman last Friday (not too bad).  I also used to watch Justice League somewhat regularly, but I haven't seen that for a long time either.  I also see there is a new "Teen Titans" series coming out (this week I think?)...might watch it to see what it is like.  I'm also looking forward to the "Clone Wars" cartoon coming up, even if its only in 3 minute episodes.  I guess I also regularly watch the Simpsons, Futurama, and Family Guy, although I don't really count those as "cartoons" more like comedy shows to me :).

I used to watch cartoons religiously, but recently I've been watching a lot of old TV shows on TV Land.  But as far as cartoons go, I still will watch Tom & Jerry quite a bit.  They were one of my favorites when I was a kid.  Woody Woodpecker was another one of my favorites, but I haven't been able to find then on TV though.

Oh yeah, seeing that post also reminded me that I occasionally watch the Looney Tunes when they happen to be on....that was always one of my favorites, and I watched it as a child, through high school and college, and some times now even.  I think many of those cartoons have stood the test of time well.  I also catch Spongebob Squarepants on occasion, but it has been awhile...its actually funnier than I thought :).

I watch all the old Transformer and GI Joe cartoons that I have.  I watch all the earlier Dragon Ball Z episodes.  As far a current stuff I watch Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Sponge Bob Squarepants, and Spiderman of ABC family.  Occasionally I get to watch the X-men on ABC family.

In my days, Spiderman & Rocket Robin Hood was in.  ;D
I did get a kick out of Animaniacs! ReBoot is not much of a cartoon but more CGI but still good IMO.

I mostly watch the saturday cartoons since there is nothing on Saturday or Sunday TV but paid ad, sports, or cartoons.  Since I don't have cable I usually just watch the new stuff on the regular chanles mostly the WB and abc stuff.

I'm 12 so I'd say Ed Edd and Eddy, Spongebob Squarepants, Kim Possible, both X-men, Spider-man, Hulk, Dexters Lab, Fairly Odd Parents, Rocket Power, Jimmy Netron, Hey Arnold, and a few more.

I'm 30 years old, and when I was a kid I remember waking up at 6am to watch all the awesome Saturday morning cartoons.  But the cartoons that are out for kids today pretty much suck if you ask me.  All the ones I used to watch had some sort of violence in them... not anymore.

I forgot to mention that I used to love the Gobots, Transformers and GI Joe.  Does anyone know if the original shows of those are on TV anywhere?  I saw a newer version of the Transformers, but it wasn't really worth watching.  And yes, I do get Cartoon Network, so let me know if those are ever on TV.  Thanks!

I still watch the occassional cartoon. Hard not to now with the Cartoon Network and all. In addition to the norm like Simpsons, The Family Guy and SouthPark, I'll usually watch Futurama and GI Joe whenever they are on. And I'd still watch Beavis and Butthead if they were still on.  ;D

Ren and Stimpy.
Pinky and the Brain.
Simpsons.

Old loony tunes are the classics of my heart.  I'll watch newer x-men and spidey when I get a chance.  The spiderman cartoon DVD's are pretty well done, if a little disjointed.  Still, can't compare to the old spiderman cartoons of the late 60s.  What high quality animation and music as well ;)

Kind of an older topic, but while going through some of our "higher up" cable channels, I was going through the guide as to what was on the network "Boomerang" and "Nicktoons".  I was happy to see that the old Looney Tunes are replayed each night on Boomerang, those were always some of my favorites.  I think I watched them pretty regularly all through childhood, high school and college, until they took them off of our local ABC station on Saturday mornings and replaced them with the Lizzie Maguire type shows.  Also, Nicktoons shows Animaniacs each night, which I've always thought was a funny show.  I know quite a few of us watched that in high school even when we had the chance, seems to carry over to an older audience in some ways.  Anyways, anyone watching cartoons from time to time?  Here's what I've been catching occasionally:

Looney Tunes - (on Boomerang nightly catch it every so often, I've sometimes considered picking up one of those Golden Collection DVD sets, anyone have either of them...what do you think of them?)

Animaniacs - (now on Nicktoons nightly, I've watched it a few times over the past couple weeks)

90s Spider-Man and X-Men (or any other Marvel) - These are on ABC Family, so I'll watch them if I happen to be lying around on a Saturday morning.  I've seen most of them several times though, so I don't watch them quite as much anymore.  I do enjoy when you can occasionally find the old "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends" on Toon Disney.  That show brings back some memories.  Also, on the Marvel front, I recently saw that Boomerang is playing the old (60s) Fantastic Four cartoon at about 10:30 CST here.  A little before my time, but I've caught it a couple of times just to see what it was like.  My dad said he remembers watching that.

Justice League (Unlimited) - I watch this fairly regularly, always been a fan.  I think the majority of the episodes cross over to "adults" pretty well, and I just like how it is animated too.

And, when it comes back....Clone Wars.  I have really enjoyed this animated series, and can't wait for the DVD and Season 3 episodes next week.  It takes some liberties, and makes parts of it more unworldly in a cartoon way, but it works.  I wouldn't mind seeing Star Wars continue in this manner after the movies.

Mainly these, and the other animated standbys such as Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama and other Adult Swim, but I don't necessarily consider these "cartoons", although they are animated.  Anyways, any other cartoon watchers out there?

This is an older thread, but I was just reading this news (http://www.newsarama.com/tv/110824-4Kids-Fox-Split.html) at Newsarama, basically stating that Fox is done with Saturday morning cartoons at the end of this year.  Now, I don't watch that channel on Saturdays or anything, but its just sad how Saturday morning cartoons on the "major networks" are going the way of the dodo.  ABC, NBC, CBS, and now FOX essentially have no animation at this point, with "The CW" being the only non-cable channel that shows them.  I know almost everyone probably has cable at this point, and there's plenty of animation to be had there, but its just sort of sad to me to think that kids these days won't grow up with that Saturday morning goodness that we did.  Maybe they don't care the way we did (and that's why its slowly going away from these networks), but I know I looked forward to it every weekend.  I still have good memories of watching Looney Tunes repeats on our local ABC station every Saturday, not to mention other Saturday favorites like Super Powers/Friends, Smurfs, etc.  The other classics of our time, like GI Joe, Transformers, and He-Man were on during the week (before/after school) around here - but again, on "local" channels.  Anyways, another one of those good nostalgic, "simpler days" type of things moving on.

Well that blows. I got rid of cable years ago. It's just too expensive. I don't get the CW either with the digital receiver. I don't know if it's because CW doesn't offer a digital HD channel in broadcast or we're just out of the signal range. Looks like no Saturday morning toon's for me. I think there's going to be an ongoing decrease in the number of cable subscribers in the short term if we're not already seeing it. Saturday morning's aren't intentionally cartoon mornings around my house but we end up watching them anyway. At least there are box sets to be had.

The only thing I watch is the Clone Wars cartoon if I remember to DVR it, which I usually do.  I would watch GI Joe if it was on, but I don't care to actually buy the DVD's as I've heard they are crap anyway.

Does Family Guy and The Simpson's count?  If so, I do watch them when I get the opportunity.

Yeah, I'm in the non-cable crowd.  I've got a two year old (and six month old), so we watch some cartoons.  In particular the 2 yr old likes the Disney series of DVDs that has the classic Disney shorts with Donald, Chip, Dale, Mickey, etc.  I've never been huge any TV cartoon series, though I watched them when I could.

Our digital receiver gets a signal from the local CW affiliate, but my brother doesn't get any channels on his digital receiver, though I think that's because of where his apartment is (behind a hill from the transmission towers...)

I used to love the toons on after school and Saturday mornings.  Good times!  Apparently kids have lives nowadays.

Ducktales, Gummi Bears, and Rescue Rangers come to mind after the obvious.

I remember Big Guy & Rusty from late 90's?  That was a cool cartoon.

Not sure if we have any big cartoon watchers here, but I was just checking out this trailer (http://tv.ign.com/dor/objects/14288081/the-avengers-earths-mightiest-heroes/videos/avengers_trl_comiccon_072110.html) for the new Avengers cartoon, and thought it looked pretty cool.

I saw there was some other animation news at SDCC as well, with four Marvel "anime" series coming to G4 (Iron Man - which they showed a bit of on G4, Wolverine, X-Men, and Blade), as well as a new Ultimate Spider-Man and Green Lantern cartoons on the way next fall (2011).  Not to mention the new Joe and Transformers stuff.

I'll admit that I'm a cartoon watcher from time to time, especially now with our daughter too.  I'll pop in the DVDs from the old G.I. Joe, Transformers, and He-Man - and also some of the modern stuff (pretty much anything superhero, Clone Wars of course, and anything our daughter likes - usually Spongebob :))

Cartoons are practically all I watch, Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, Family Guy on occasion, Spongebob, Batman TAS, Justice League, Animaniacs, Looney Tunes and tons more. I love cartoons, they're just so much more fun than live action, especially since you're free to do practically anything in animation. I think a lot of people dismiss animated series as "for kids" but theres a number of very mature series out there that can be enjoyed by anyone. Gargoyles is a good example of this, that show has some great stories.

Grew up with the likes of Transformers,Robotech,M.A.S.K.,MOTU,Voltron,Bionic-Six and SpiderMan and have followed the Iron Man - Armoured Adventures in more recent times as well as Wolverine and the X-Men.

Clone Wars of course also being the most followed for me.

Same here, watched a lot of Hanna Barbera, MASK, TF, GI Joe as a kid. Years later we got Cartoon Network and such. I'm a huge fan of Ren & Stimpy, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, Spongebob, The Tick, Samurai Jack, Courage the Cowardly Dog and the short films of What! A! Cartoon! Brilliant stuff.

Now that I have a 5 y/o daughter and a nearly 2 y/o daughter, I watch quite a bit of Dora, Diego, Backyardigans (they're cool), Rocket Power and such.

But nothing beats Tom & Jerry and the Looney Tunes! Nothing.

For those that are interested, Marvel.com (http://marvel.com/videos/channel/character/Avengers) has been running "shorts" of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes as a lead up to the October 20th premiere of the regular cartoon.  These are sort of similar to the original Clone Wars series, as they are "micro episodes" that are around 5 minutes long each.  Just thought I'd post it for anyone interested.

Also, it appears that the new Joe cartoon "G.I. Joe: Renegades" is scheduled to premiere on October 10th on the Hub (Discovery Kids).

Just a slight update to my earlier post, you can view all of the Avengers shorts (so far) online HERE (http://disney.go.com/xd/avengers/videos/index.html).  I've been watching the new one each day, and I think the show looks pretty good.  Looking forward to it.

I don't know if anyone has been watching it, but the new Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon on Disney XD is pretty good so far.  I caught the micro episodes online (which are now put together pretty seamlessly as character-focused episodes on television), as well as the first four episodes of the season, and all have been pretty well done I think.  Worth checking out if you care about such things.

That was hands-down the funniest episode of the entire season.  There seemed to be a lot of slow points for season 4, and not much of a cohesive storyline.  Still a fantastic show, but I didn't think it held up to the standards set by the first 3 seasons.

But the finale... talk about fantastic!  Saved by Spanish Fly.  Most bleeps of any episode to date.  The return of Triana.

And man... I want a Rusty Venture!

Here's to hoping season 5 is fantastic!

I'm hoping that some of you can help me with something.  For the longest time, my father and I used to quote an old Foghorn Leghorn Looney Toons cartoon where he says, 'You're too short son, the quick ones go right over your head.'  However, I was looking around on YouTube and I couldn't find the episode where he says this.  The closest thing I could find was when he's talking to the Chickenhawk and he says, 'You're built too low to the ground...'  So am I crazy and he doesn't say the quote as I remember it or is there still an episode out there that I haven't found?

There was also an episode where the Chickenhawk calls Foghorn a 'Loudmouth Schnook', but I couldn't find that one either.  I'm hoping that both quotes are in the same episode and it's out there somewhere so I can show it to my kids.  I was trying to explain it to them and they instead think I'm crazy...

I think the episode you're thinking of is when he's watching the little chick with the glasses.  They're out playing baseball and he makes the joke about "keeping your eye on the ball....eye....ball....eyeball!  Get it boy? It's a joke boy!  You're too short son, the quick ones go right over your head!"

I see EW (http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20497419,00.html) is running a poll of the 25 best animated series of all time (you can vote for #1 HERE (http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20497419_20968178,00.html)).  Lots of personal favorites on that list, and the original CW micro series is included as well.  Some other highlights:

Clone Wars Micro Series
Batman: The Animated Series
The Simpsons
Family Guy
Animaniacs
Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour (Looney Tunes)
Scooby Doo
Robot Chicken
Venture Bros.
Futurama
Spongebob Squarepants

I'm sure there are some missing, but a fairly diverse list otherwise.  Although I like a number of those series, I think I'd give the nod to Batman: The Animated Series personally.  I still watch and re-watch those DVDs...and, with apologies to the great Nolan Batman films...it really is my favorite version of the Dark Knight.  There are a few others I would have liked to see included, but can understand why they aren't too (Spectacular Spider-Man, original Joe/TF, Justice League/JL Unlimited, 200X MOTU, etc.)

What, did they just limit it to stuff from the 80's or 90's? They missed several decades of outstanding programs.

Johnny Quest
Thundarr the Barbarian
Herculoids
Space Ghost
The 70's Flash Gordon
Original Spider-Man with that gay song
60's Fantastic Four
Voltron
Starblazers

Shoot, I could probably come up with 25 just from my childhood alone...To Be Continued
