Title: Master Phruby's Customs Thread
Post by: Phrubruh on August 26, 2004, 10:18 PM
Greetings Programs!

I just signed up at the JediDefender site and I like wait I see. There are alot of familure names around here.

I think I'll start off my stay at this message board with my latest custom. It's a carded version of my son Fred in his Padawan Jedi outfit.  Enjoy!

Nice work Paul, and may I say thank you for A) Stopping over, and B) taking up some of those F'n Padawan figures hanging on the pegs at every WM store from coast to coast! :)

Seriously though, that's some good work.  I bet your son appreciates that.

I myself have pondered doiong some Youngling customs but finding smaller heads is a rarity.  :(

What's the pieces you used?  All new sculpt on the head?

Oh, feel free to hop over and intro yourself in the section down towards Watto's Junkyard.  I think it's a couple sections below it (tell I don't go often).

And again welcome aboard.  You're a good name to see hopping on!

Thanks Jesse. I'll poke around here tomorrow at work.  ;)

The head is just ep1 anakin. It looks closest to Fred and I didn't really have time to make a ready good head for it. I'm working on Kermit Skyhopper for UGP#5 right now.

Hey Paul!  Welcome to JD!  Another face here, I'm sure you'd recognize from my occasional appearances in the RS SoCal thread.  Anyway, glad you took Jess up on his offer to stop on by.  You'll have to swing by the SoCal thread here from time to time, and let us know what's shakin' down in the OC!

That's a kick ass custom of your son there.  Definitely cool.  VOTC, no less!  Makes me inclined to want to beg for you to make a custom of me too.   ;)

Keep up the great customs.  Looking forward to seeing more of them here.  Enjoy JD, and feel free to give any of the staff a holler if you've got any questions, comments, or suggestions about the place.  We're here to serve!

Catch ya' around the boards...

- Matt

Nice custom, and welcome to JediDefender.  ;)

I wish I could do an VOTC carded custom of myself but I haven't seen any Porkins on the pegs in a while.  :-\

Hey, that's real cool Phruby!  Lucky kid you've got there.  I'm sure plenty of kids (and a few grown ups) would be stoked to be their own action figure.   8)

Is it just the lighting in the picture there, or is the OTC logo at the bottom left a little different?  I can't really see anything at the top of it, where the "Star" word would be.  I think it's probably just the lighting though.

Did you shave/"spike"/modify the Anakin's hair at all, to match your son's crew cut?  Hard to tell.  Regardless, nice custom job and cute kid there!

Oh yeah, welcome to JD too!   ;)

The box and logo are from a votc han solo. So its the real clam shell. I didn't do anything to the anakin head. It kind of looks like him and I'd probably mess up the head anyway.

I'm currently on the lookout for a head that looks like me. I've got an extra jedi luke that is going to loose his head once I find one.

Paul, shoot me your image over sometime (you can send to my JD.com address if you want.  Should be on my profile on the front page).

Not to toot my own horn but I think I probably have the largest generic 3.75" action figure noggin' collection on the net.  I can at least aim you the right way(s) perhaps.

Just lemme know!

Post by: Phrubruh on August 28, 2004, 11:53 AM
One thing I like to do is go back over previous work and try to improve it. One such example was my Admiral Daala.

My first attempt was using ewok Leia's head and torso with Adi Gallia's arms and legs. I went a little overboard on the chest.

For my second attempt, I used an imperial officer for the body and Zam Wessel for the head. I had to sculpt on long red hair and chest.

It's definately an improvement I think. Anyway, I'd love to see how others have improved their previous work.  Please post pictures of all of your attempts, what you changed and what you've learned.

well, we have a very small customizing audience here, unfortunately. something jesse and i have been trying to build up. but feel free to continue posting your makeovers.

as for your admiral daala, i would have to agree that the re-make is better. the re-sculpted hair and chest details are vastly improved. how long a time period was it from the first attempt to the makeover?
Title: Re: Makeovers
Post by: Phrubruh on September 5, 2004, 09:51 PM
That's a couple of years difference. I just had to wait for better parts. I plan a new Admiral Daala by the end of the year.

As part of the group projects over at FFURG and RS, I'd like to show my work in progress picture of my Simpsons Star Wars Fan Boy. No it's not a self portrait.  >:(

I still need to add boots and a lightsaber. Any ideas on a lightsaber? Should I just make one or are there any in this scale already available?

He looks great! The cloak especially is very well done.

As far as a lightsaber, you should look around for one of those Mega Action Obi-Wans from a few years back. It was 6", so the lightsaber should be pretty much in-scale for the Simpsons stuff:

Definitely cool.  Be neat if there was a Simpson's Mark Hammill for Homer to lug around.  :)

Thanks guys. The simpsons figure name is Gary. He's a computer nerd. He even comes with a computer. He is wearing a sweater. I made it a little longer and added a hood to the back. The shirt is also a thin layer of sculpty. I've updated the picture with new boots and a lightsaber. I think this guy kind of represents us all. Good mascote for a site.  ;D

And a good use for a buff Wookie figure too since they're becoming less and less useful for anything.

I've finished my version of Mara Jade from the Mysteries of the Sith add on game for Dark Forces II. I've been chronicalizing the development of this figure over the past week over at Rebelscum's custom board. She is made from a GI Joe Jinx head, Scarlette torso and lower legs, Hoth leia jacket, droid factory Padme arms and Han Solo upper legs. This is a replacement makeover over my first version you can see here. (http://www.thecustomalliance.com/hruby/ph-marajade.jpg)

Title: Re: Mara Jade
Post by: Jesse James on March 1, 2005, 12:27 PM
I was keeping up with the topic too Paul, thanks for sharing the finished figure.

It's a better head using the Jinx figure I think...  Much more true to the MOTS box cover.  I'm still not sold on the torso though really, only because I think the Star Wars line lends itself better to the overall "look".

I think a torso like Droid Factory Padme's perhaps would've worked better maybe?  I wasn't a big fan of the Joe torso idea ever...  Joes are only good for accessories and heads I've found, though you did blend the lower leg with the Han Cantina upper legs quite well.

As a secondary choice, and I think you used this on your previous attempt, I think the Aura Sing body's superior to grafting a Joe torso as well.

I think the smaller Jinx head would've set better on a smaller SW figure torso then too, and it could've been grafted to the Han legs to make a curvy woman's figure.

The accuracy of the figure seems pretty good though overall...  The paintjob seems pretty good too, keeping true to the character on the box, though the skin seems pale.  Easily could be the camera flash though.

My only other suggestion beyond the torso was perhaps trying to use the Luke Ceremonial jacket over Hoth Leia's...  Leia's is a bit small, kind of untrue to the look on the box, but the Luke's is the exact style.  I don't know if the "exagerrated" chest on the Luke figure (and subsequently his coat) would have benefited fitting her, ummm, "attributes", haha. :)

Good work Paul!  She needs a Dark Kyle to fight now though!

I don't see many MOTS Mara's ever surface with her purple saber.  To me, the purple saber was her trademark more than the Luke saber really...  It gave her some distinction.
Title: Re: Mara Jade
Post by: Phrubruh on March 1, 2005, 04:13 PM
Thanks man. I'm glad you liked it. I tried the Luke jacket on her. The joe body totally swam in it. It made her look like a little girl wearing her father's jacket. My first version of this Mara Jade used that jacket. It just wasn't very fitting.

The problem I had with the Jinx head was the skin was very pale but then again many red heads are very pale. Instead of painting the face and screwing it up completely to give her a better complexion, I painted the body instead. Every time I try to paint a face, it looks like Ronald McDonald.   :-\

I wish more people would make work in progress threads and take suggestions along the way. Of course, It's not easy to not totally flame someone on their criticism after you've spent many hours trying to get it just right. Maybe that is why we rarely see these kind of threads. I think it's good to take opinions and try to improve it along the way. It makes me a better customizer. Even though it is kind of a painful experience.

Do you have any reference pictures of the dark Kyle?

What figures do you have planned Jesse?

Well my version of Luke's old girlfriend Callista is finally done. Check her out. I've made a few changes to her per your ideas. The hair is different, she has a choker, and the vest has piping and two colors - (brown/red and brown/purple)

Looks good.  You put a lot of work into this one.

I honestly never like this character, but your custom of it is very well done and fits in well.  I'd like to see a photo of her with Luke maybe.

Also, in one of the novels doesn't she go to Hoth with Luke?  Maybe you could make a sexy snow bunny outfit version of her.   :)

I said before I thought Master Phruby's recipe would become the template for all future Callista's...looks like he proved me right.

I like this fig a lot. The only suggestions I would make would be sculpting her hairstyle to look more like the reference pic, and maybe taking her down a bit in the gloss department, but those are minor quibbles. It turned out great. (Love the soft goods, by the way!)

Thanks everybody for the kind comments. This one was a nice easy one to make. When I got my ep3 GH clone trooper and saw how he was decorated, I had to make an ARC Trooper out of my son's old clone trooper. These things could be alot of fun to customize.

Phruby made a clone! Blasphemy! Heretic!   ;)

Not Blasphemy. This is a clone wars ARC trooper not an EP3 clone.  ;) I'm just against the same four clones being made over and over again. But they are clones so I guess it make sense to make copies of them.

Nice job putting the various parts together and making them cohesive.  it looks like the figure's body, head, and limbs are all original to it.  The paint is eye-catching, which I think a Twi'lek dancer would want.  Nice use of the gold on the head and lekku.

It's a really nice looking clone though. I like how the armor still has it's shine and isn't dull. And the blue/black wings look pretty cool. One thing I think I would change is the imperial logos. Both of them look good but it seems wierd how one one side of the wing it is red and on the other it is black. The yellow Neyo logoss look pretty good as well.

Shhhh...Don't tell anybody. That's why he is only here and at FFURG. ;D

Actually, this one is a commissioned piece so I had no choice to make one. At least its not green/blue/red/orange.  ;)

This is the first time I've made custom decales. I had four red imperial logos but I messed them up and had to replace them with two black logos. I'm trying to conserve paper.

Phruby, that is one sharp looking custom.  I really like it.  Great job on keeping the armor with that shiny feel that we are used to seeing on Clones/Stormies.

The decals looks great too.  Overall a very nice custom and nice to see a fan-fic totally different type of Clone.

Wow, thats nice bro.  Is it fan-fic or is there a story behind it?  I've got one in the works (EU not blackhole) that I am trying to come up with a story for.    The helmet is what really makes that figure man.

If it were me, about the only thing I would change is the Neyo-style markings. It seems to negate the whole stealth/intimidation thing to have big gold targets everywhere. :)

Great otherwise though.

Ya, I'd probably remove them too for accuracy. Its just me having some fun with decales. Infact, to be accurate, the whole figure should be spraypainted black with no markings on it at all. But where's the fun in that? ;D

Damn, this turned out perfect!

The use of parts already looked great, but when it's all painted it just looks fantastic.  This is a true work of art.

Another thing that really adds to it is that she looks "wet" - that's a good thing.  You would think that a fish species would try to keep their skin hydrated.

Wonderful, I'm jealous.  This makes my version look terrible!

I so happy you guys like it. She was more fun to paint than I though she would be. I think there are like four drywashed paint layers on her. The part that made her really cool was the wetness of the figure. That painted on gloss really works well. It's actually a gloss sealer for glass paints. It makes a nice shine. I used it all the time on my Cylons.

Damn she is perfect! The paint job looks great it is very fishy/lobstery/crustaceany looking. The layered coloring turned outgreat and I love the wet look. I really like the legs, the kinda dual fin/foot thing looks fantastic as does the rest of the leg. I think it is weird she has boobs though, I know it is part of the design, but it is weird to think of a fish with mammory glands. :-*

Phruby sorry I didn't comment on this sooner I've been lazy when it comes to posting these last few days. :P

Post by: Phrubruh on August 7, 2005, 04:00 PM
Here is a guy I've been wanting to do for a while. Back in 1985 Kenner was going to come out with a new line of star wars figures based on events that happen after Return of the Jedi. Luke was to be a full Jedi Master and he would start trainning new jedi to fight against the new bad guy in the galaxy Atha Prime.

As Kenner says, "A powerful force long kept in exile in a remote fringe of the galaxy has been released by the death of the Emperor. It moves now, like a plague, securing control over the shattered remnants of the empire and re-enslaving newly freed worlds. Atha Prime, genetics master, ruler of the dark worlds and architect of the Clone Wars, is free again. His advanced army of combat clones has already decimated rebel outposts along the galactic frontier. His goal is to cursh forever the Rebel Alliance and control the Galaxy."

One of the characters that Luke was to train is a Mongo Beefhead Tribesman named phruby. Here he is, for the first time in 'vintage style' plastic.

Very cool! :D I like the sculpting job  alot. And the softgood cape looks excellent, it isn't to puffy; it looks very vintage-esque. For the longest time I had thought your avatar was an upsidedown quarren. :-X Then I think I remeber you saying a while ago it was a Mongo Beefhead, I still had no idea what it was but I knew it wasn't a quarren. ;) Is there another source to that story or is it something that Kenner made up all by themselves?

Nice job Phruby, I know how much you get a kick out of Kenner almost making this figure and releasing it.  Your version is awesome.

I think you should make a modern one using the POTJ Tessek head.   :)

It's actually a story Kenner made up for their new star wars line in '85-'86. They of course didn't go thru with it. The only figure that made it to plastic was in '97 when we got the Imperial Sentinel. He is a dead ringer for Atha Prime. You can read more about those plans here. I just might do that. It has been suggested that we make a photonovel or group project based on Kenner's 85-86 plans for star wars. What do you think?

That artwork was actually ROTJ concept work for the Imperial Guards.  I think it shows up in a few books, the Art of ROTJ for sure, though.   Isn't  the beefhead figure a hoax or joke of some kind?  I don't think it was ever a serious attempt at a figure.  Could be wrong.

Well he is in that presentation flipbook that Kenner used to sell the idea of more star wars figures. You should see some of the droids that are pictured too. There is one of 4lon without a head holding up a gun with two 2-1B arms coming out of his sholders. I plan on making him someday.

Yeah, I'm not so sure now.  I went to ToysrGus to see what he had written but it wasn't in the flip book info.  It might be on a different page.  I could have sworn that someone at Kenner made the Mongo as a goof or a deliberate attempt to throw people off the trail.  Or perhaps as just a test to see what could be done with different parts, I don't think it was ever intended for release on any level.  I find it highly unlikely they would have used the head with the neck peg sticking out or to have used the name Beefhead (Walrusman and Hammerhead aside).

I think this would be a very cool idea for the monthly thing!  Of course, you really don't have many choices to do though.  I have the star wars galaxy mag at home that shows all these pics.  They also had an attachment for the millennium falcon that hooked into the fork in the front.  There are more figures that you havent seen as well.  Maybe I can scan the mag's pages that relate to this.

While i like the overall figure, i would have went with a non glossy red for the "clothing" parts of the figure.

The JOE head was a good choice but again, the hair always seemed more brown/dk brown to me.

The helmet i would have liked to see the outer most part be a gloss black as it is in the comics.  Gives it that more sinister look rather than Kir Kanos' all red helmet.

The belt seems to stand out just a bit being silver, i may have went with black.

And to add that final last touch to the armor, it would have been cool to see a nice semi gloss black to give it a nice gleam.

But still, a nice custom and i look forward to seeing the double bladed weapon that he and Kanos uses.
Title: Re: Carnor Jax
Post by: CHEWIE on August 15, 2005, 10:13 PM
For some reason this character never appealed to me, but I do think this is a great custom, and probably a lot better than what I could come up with...

I agree that maybe a non-glossy looking red color would look a little better, but then again it could just be the flash.  Also, I would suggest just a touch of dry brushing to bring out more details and look just a little more worn in.

The helmet looks just awesome.  Truly a great job painting it, it looks production quality.  Wow... do you have a pic with him with the helmet on?

 :P

The helmet goes about 3/4 of the way on. Any more and I would have holes in the helmet.  :-\

I wish I had some gloss in this color but I just went with the paints I had.

maybe you could have done a swappable head. that'd still be really cool.

Really cool figure. and you should make two axes. one for Kir Kanos, so they can duel. haha  ;D

Nice custom Phruby  :)
I like the silver belt, but I agree with aeseven7 on his other points - a less glossy paint would have been nice, but if you don't have them, it's no biggie.
I think a softgoods cloak/cape would have been better, but that's just because I'm a big fan of softgoods.  Is that a SP Gen. Grievous cloak?  It looks like it fits pretty well.
Title: Re: Carnor Jax

Good eye on the Grevious cloak. I had to trim it down a bit to make it work. I'm going to be making another version of this character soon taking aesevens advice and yours about the softgoods into account since this one is up on auction.

Oops. I shouldn't have told you that. ;)

Phruby- you should make your own thread like a lot of us have. I really like this custom. The paint app looks really good, albeit a bit glossy. But that is nothing a little dullcote won't fix. :) I like the sawppable head idea, what you could also try is using a POTF2 royaol guard helmet hollowed out. I've used it before and it looks pretty good.

It has been suggested that I start my own thread for the figures I've made. So, I'm going to go back in time and slowy start showing some of my older figures.

Let's start off with some figures of Jorg Sacul. The first one is a bootleg copy of the C2 exclusive Jorg Sacul. This package is entirely fake except for the inner blister tray. I tried to make this exactly like the real thing back then. I think I got pretty close.

The other is my version of Master Sacul. This one is using a casted head with quigon body and mace windu hood.

Nice work Phruby!
It's weird, but it really looks like a "modern" version of Glassman's "vintage" Snoova.  Of course, it's the same character, but a lot of the little details look exactly the same to me...
Is that harness sculpted or is it a modified Wookie harness?  I like the details on it and the eye-patch is really well done.

Thanks Gregorbian. I used glassman's and darls customs as reference. This is what the new Wookiee Commando should have looked like.

The harness is the original wookiee warrior harness with a thin layer of sculpty over it. I've cut off the little bullet clips and enbedded them in the sculpty.

Good stuff Phruby - very clean paint job.  I tried painting an AT-RT Driver white but the paint kept chipping where the pouch on his belt rubs against the right leg.  I think I might have applied too much paint (layer of white spray paint, layer of acrylic white).

What is that micron pen you're talking about?  Is it like those Sharpie marker pens?  Do you prefer that to a paint brush and acrylics or was it just because you had it handy?

Pigma Micron pens by Sakura are graphic art / drafting pens you can buy at any craft store. Basically they give a nice fine line when drawing on plastic. They are fantastic for drawing eyes and filling in tight spaces. I use them mostly for touch up work. They come in six colors and varing thickness. I use a .005 thickness for eyes. They are a little expensive at a couple of dollars a piece but worth it.

The AT RT driver is great, especially considering how hard it is to make white paint look good.

Greg, maybe we can work out a deal so you can cast this guy. He comes apart very easily. He's a very simple design. In fact the body seems to be a modifed version of Sise Fromm from the same line.  I even have an extra unpainted head you can cast. I would just have to repaint it after your done.

Looks fantastic.  So it's a Bantha5 kit?  Looks like a good match.

I don't know if it's just me, but I think it coloring of the plastic material on the helmet isn't as clear white as the armor on the rest of him.  It could be just me though.  If it is and you want to change it, I think a little bit of weathering would offset it and make it look even more real.

Great work!

It's Bantha5's kit. The helmet color is more a function of the flash than the paint. In person, you couldn't tell the colors apart. It's a good idea to weather him a little.

Cody is almost done too.

Holy crap!  That is one cool, yet twisted looking custom Phruby.  Clearly a lot of work went into this.  You never cease to amaze me with some of the more difficult projects you tackle!

Are the lines on her painted on her torso?  They look so factory made, they look perfect!  How did you do that?

The head kind of has a "superhero" look to it actually.  I guess it's just the design though,  nothing that you did wrong.

Thanks Chewie! Now you know why I couldn't get her finished by Halloween. Mixing the right shade of paint too forever and finding some thread that acted like feathers in this scale wasn't easy. The lines are actually a decale I made with photoshop. I love that Testors Custom Decale System. I just wish the paper wasn't so expensive.

Here is my second version of Carnor Jax. I made one without a helmet a few months ago and sold it on eBay to see how the market would accept it. For now, I've decided not to sell figures on eBay anymore. I made this figure to replace my sold version.

This time, I made the armor shiny while the cloths are flat red. I also noticed the gloves are red but the gauntlets are black. I decided to make the entire helmet shiny because it looked weird with a flat red. This version has a soft goods cape. Enjoy!

The acrobat was really nice, as is Jax. Jax is actually on my "to-do" list, using the same red Royal Guard body. It was nice of Hasbro to actually sculpt the body under the robes. The only thing I was hesitant about was that the body looked a little too small. How does he compare with the other regular figures?

About the figure itself, I agree with your decision to make the armor a shiny finish compared with the cloth parts being a dull finish. And I plan on doing the entire helmet with the shiny finish as well.

Overall, a very nicely done figure.

I would suggest using different legs, as Carnor Jax neither has leg armor or a gun holster in the comics.

Also, maybe try either cutting the cape differently or making it out of a less stiff fabric, as capes don't realistically hang like that.

Well, I'm not going to suggest any changes to it, I think I'll compliment it instead!

Really this looks sharp Phruby.  I don't know if it's 100% accurate compared to what a comic book version is supposed to look like, but it looks fantastic to me.  I really like the contrast of the flat red to the shiny black, and the silk cape is great.

Well done!

Yeah, in addition, Phruby, you might want to make his armor out of metal, because it wasn't plastic in the comics. Oh, and you might want to make your custom about six foot, because Jax was supposed to be taller than 3.75 inches.

I don't see the value of coming on and saying "fix this and that" without acknowledging the hard work of the customizer in the first place.

I for one appeciate constructive criticism (things like "if I could improve one thing it would be" or even "you might consider stripping and repainting part X as the paint looks a little lumpy there"). But I also appreciate creative license, and if CJ has a holster in Phruby's universe, that's cool. If you don't like it with the holster, make your own sans holster and show it to us.

That's what I think these boards should be about. :)

Exactly. I see the holster as adding playability. As for the leg armor I see it as artistic license. That leg armor just looks cool and much better than the pictures in the comic book. I think its enhansing the figure.

Since my computer now works, I've updated Commander Neyo to be more accurate than before. His helmet got reworked and I moved his logo more to the front. I fixed his belt so it goes in the right direction and made the palton smaller. Finally, I weathered the whole thing as suggested in the Cody thread. I think he makes for a much more dynamic figure.

OK, you've convinced me. I *have* to go hunt down some red guards...

The inclusion of the Boba forearm on Kir Kanos is a nice touch. I assume it's supposed to be green since you painted the hand red?

Really nice, clean work here Phruby. I wish I knew more about these comics... :P

Exactly, it was a green 300th boba fett hand. I was hoping it wasn't too big. It seemed to work ok.  I didn't paint the gaunlet silver like in the comics. I though it looked fine the way it was.

Now since I made my version of these guys, Hasbro is going to copy me once again and make their own version. How many want to guess it will look exactly like mine. Its just going to be a repaint of the rots royal guard. Well, at least we'll get a better staff.

SWEET, Phruby. That looks very much like it would have come off a vintage card. It appears you have added some detail to the belt? He really does appear to be wearing a tunic insofaras a vintage sculpt would show one.

I wish I had a suggestion to improve him... maybe slap him on a card?  ;)

Great job!

Thanks In Rem. The belt is really the only part I'm not happy with. I think it makes him look fat. But it's mostly there to keep him together since I had to split the torso with a rotary tool.

Post by: In Rem on December 7, 2005, 09:46 PM
Cloth. The vinyl ties his head back into the old Obi too much. The cloth cape left no doubt that the fig was Dooku.

And I sort of envision Kenner as giving Dooku special treatment anyway; like they did Jedi Luke. :P

This is a really cool concept and a very nice mix of parts, Phruby. As to the belt making him look fat... it's not like he had the physique of an Olympian God, so I think a little girth works here.

How did I miss that Kanos? ???

Kanos- Version 3 is my favorite yet. I really like how you managed to get the armor gloosy but the body suit still has a matte finish. I don't have any suggestions for the figure itself but I think that the weapon could be extended a little bit, it seems to be a tad short.

Dooku- Very nicely done! I think the belt look ok, it maybe is a tad to wide (from the crotch to the chest) but it really isn't that noticeable. I was going to suggest that you try an vinal cape when I read this earlier but now that you've shown a picture of him with it, I too say stay with cloth. I like Ripley's suggestion of the vintage Luke cape, but the more I look at the modern Dooku cape, the more it grows on me. I think it would be cool if you made him a saber, vintage style of course. :)

Dooku!  A character that in my opinion is a great link to the OT in the manner of the character and the actor they chose, and an excellent idea for a vintage styled figure.  Damn good idea and perfectly executed.  And I say go with the cloth cape - it's a perfect match I think.

Man, I'm mad that i missed this yesterday Phruby!!

Great dooku.  I have to agree that the vintage cape is less convincing than the cloth, and i'm not a soft good person...

I think a darker cape would be better.
Maybe that's why the vinyl one doenst work. The color is too obi wan.
Go get a binder from walmart/staples/office depot and cut the vinyl off of that. I'm sure a dark one would do the trick.

P.S.  i'll try to make the saber mold this weekend...  HO HO HO!

Master_Phruby -
Really nice work. I like that darker jumpsuit a lot. This has always been my favorite rendering of Fett (the graphic on the card), so to see a modern fig painted to those specs is great for me. Frankly, it's an idea I wish I'd had :)

No problem Paul,  I tried to even curve the hilt, but the soft plastic kept returning to its original shape. Dont know if it still had any curve left by the time you got it.

I'm trying to collect one of every vintage weapon so i can make them as needed in the future.

That looks great phruby!  I did my version witht eh dirty 3P0, but i really like the shinyness of yours.

You should cut that head in half, and glue it to the back part of the c3p0 head and then the mask will fit on.

Really nice otherwise.

Did you split the ROTS 3p0 head in half for this?  Or is it a different mask.?

Ok, I'm alive and well now.   8)

Looks pretty good Phruby.  Got a pic of the cover?  Might be cool to compare it to that reference picture.

It might just be me, but the blue looks a bit shiny.  Not that it takes away from the figure though.  What I'd try is a bit of a blue-black drybrush on that part.

I like the use of parts too - it makes her look like an entirely new figure.  Good choice of the arms too.  Is she wearing a vest?

Thanks guys for the comments. She does shine a little because she was finished pretty late at night. I havn't applied the dull cote to the figure. The outfit she is wearing is actually purple. It just didn't photograph very well. I'll have to take another picture after a few layers of dull cote is applied.

Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Update Leia Solo (12/31/05)
Post by: Phrubruh on January 2, 2006, 03:11 PM
Thanks guys. I made her in order to get rid of some left over body parts. She is made up of potf2 Ewok Leia head, potf2 hoth leia body, saga Padme pilot arms and potj death star escape han solo jacket. She is to scale as far as the hoth leia body is. I just added the yellow strip on the side of her legs. I didn't use masking tape on the yellow strip because of the wrinkles in the pant legs. Her outfit is purple but the flash seems to make it look more bluish. She is based on the below reference picture. Refreash your browser to see the changes.

I didn't have a Leia head that had pony tail so I went with the straight hair instead. I also couldn't find my ribbon from my gi joe jinks. If I had those two things it would have been a lot closer to the reference. The point of the project however was not to buy new parts but use what I have on hand. I will be doing a lot more figures done in the "Chewie-style" of mixing and matching body parts just to reduce fodder. I have three huge bags of body parts to get rid of this year.   :o

great use of parts Phruby, never seen that Leia before.

did you paint the Corellian blood stripes on the sides of her pants? just curious, b/c i think that's a cool touch on the comic cover.

the only thing i would add would be a holster on her leg. the color of her jumpsuit looks great, the paint apps is my favorite thing about this figure along with the legs you swapped on.

thanks Rip. I updated my picture with the additional yellow stripes. I named the file the same so your browser might not see the difference. Pressing the refreash button should show the new picture. A holster would be a good addition. I added the band that holds the holster but wasn't sure how to graft in the holster itself.

I don't know if posting this is against the rules or not but I'll give it a try. This is my first GI Joe custom. This is of course, Cobra Commander in this battle armor. I don't know if posting this is against the rules or not but I'll give it a try.

This is a forum for showcasing your customizing skills... if you stray from Star Wars once in a while, no one will care.   ;)

I like the paint scheme, but he needs a good staff or shiv or something to finish him off... maybe a helmet to go with it (just for him to hold, not necessarily to wear).

ps.
this has nothing to do with anything CC, but I thought I'd let you know since you asked CHEWIE about his Gonk...

I need to make a gonk droid. I've got like six of this puppies laying around. I like the stuff on top of him. How to you make his legs stay together? Mine won't stand straight like that.

On my Gonk droids, I use those little clear plastic rubber bands on the legs; you know, the rubber bands that Hasbro uses to keep weapons in figures hands.

The rubber band is clear and it blends into the gonk's leg so you can't see it there.  Presto!  A Gonk droid whose legs are together and stands nicely on your shelf...  ;)

As an old Joe head from waaaay back Ive got to say I really like this one. Its kinda like CC kicking back without his helmet. The color scheme works great. Ive been thinking about digging up my old joe customs and posting them on commando customs. I would have posted them here but I thought they were against the rules as well. Good job.

Don't worry Jeff, this will be the only non star wars custom I'm posting here. Future joes will be over at commando customs where they belong.

Always nice to see another rendition of my all-time favorite EU character. :)

I like Ki-Adi's body but I'm not really a big fan of the Han head. I think a Rykrof Endor Rebel head would work better. I believe that Corran bleaches his hair blond during I, Jedi. But it has been quite awhile since I've read that book. Whistler looks pretty good, did you use any particular reference for him, or is that just how you imagined him?

Well paul, i know what you mean. I got tons of parts...tons, that i need to try and incorperate into customs.
The problem is that i make/sculpt them now rather than use the tons of fodder i got.
That aside, Great Corran and Whistler.
I did the same thing when i read I jedi. I went for thr Guide to characters version also rather than the Ijedi cover version.

Great work, and good match of  tunic and R2 unit. Now thats fashion accesorizing at its best!

i like the Han head for Corran, looks good to me & you really can't tell its a Han head till you look at it closely. the colors look good and i like the Ki-Adi body too. On Whistler, the lines on the dome are a little crooked/off looking, but that's just a nitpick...painting straight lines is a pain without taping off and using an airbrush.
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Update Corran Horn & Whister (1/20/06)
Post by: Phrubruh on January 21, 2006, 02:48 PM
Thanks guys. I modeled Horn after the one Craig Mullan and Glassman did. Whistler was based on a Dan Curto version.

Ya, the lines were painful. The way I did it was to make a custom decale. Then I wrapped a 5 inch and 4 inch decale around the head. The problem is working with something that long and thin is very hard to control. I probably should have cut it in smaller pieces and placed them.

Ya know, if you carded that Rykrof figure, you could probably sell it as an actual Hasbro toy since SOME of us believe there really is such a character.  8)

It would make a great April fools day joke if it posted as an real figure on JD's home page. RS would probably fall for it since they steel articles from everywhere.

Cool Corran Horn and Whistler.  I never read that particular SW book, so I'm only vaguely familiar with the characters.
I really like the paint apps on the droid - I love astromech repaints (they were my first SW customs) and it's always cool to see very unique designs such as Whistler.  It looks like you matched the paint color pretty well.

I don't particularly like the Ki-Adi body, now that we have so many good ROTS jedi bodies, but I can definitely understand wanting to clear out some older custom fodder  ;)

Thanks. The microlady neck post is just a ball and a stick. I cut off the stick and glued the ball to the buttom of the Leia head. The ball then goes back in its slot on the upper part of the body. I hide the connection with the chain.

Here is my latest Microlady. Ms. Aurra Sing. This one uses a white microlady with a medium chest size. The head, hands, holsters and guns are from the original potj Aurra Sing. The vest is a cut down vest from DS Han Solo. Enjoy!

pretty snazzy. I like this one because the joints dont stand out as much for me as the other microman customs that have been done.

Post by: BrentS on April 6, 2006, 11:15 PM
Now thats a great microlady.  I think she's my favorite yet.  I think it helps that you aren't trying to show too much skin with all those joints.   My only complaint is that the arms look a little bit too long but that could just be the perspective of the picture.
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Aurra Sing (4/6/06)
Post by: Commander_Miseria on April 7, 2006, 01:30 AM
I noticed that as well, but i dont think its the arms, i just think its that the head is a bit small so it makes it look out of proportion

Post by: aeseven7 on April 7, 2006, 06:53 AM
I tell ya, after everyone 'microman' custom I see finished, makes me want to make my own!

I think this is probably my fav microman custom. (altho i'm still eager to see your RC when its finished-hope i havent missed it!)

Aurra's arms always seemed to be long with Hasbro's figures as well so I think the way you have it now is perfect.  I agree though, the joints are 'hidden' very well and my eyes aren't drawn to them as much at all with this figure.

I would LOVE to see her metal antenna added somehow though. . .i know its not always visually pleasing to look at but it seems like such an important part of her that it's the only thing i can suggest that would make this impressive custom even better, lol.  Altho finding a way to actually DO it is a whole 'nother matter!
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Aurra Sing (4/6/06)
Post by: Phrubruh on April 7, 2006, 09:36 AM
Thanks everybody. The arms are as long as any other microlady. There are no changes there. They are portional as any other figure posted here. However, the fingers might be adding to the illusion of length. You got to remember that Aurra Sing has very long fingers. She isn't human. That is why I used the potj Sing hands instead of the traditional microlady ones for accuracy.

I do need to add the antenna. One of our cats needs to donate a whisker. Here kitty, kitty, kitty.... ;D

Oh, MM Scorch is still on the way. His armor is still being casted.

Phruby, what a cool figure you have here.  All of your microman customs are very nice, but this is my favorite.  You've made a decent figure into something special.

I would suggest one thing - maybe lowering her head a bit on that neck peg?  Other than that, I'm baffled at how you made this look so real!  Very good work Phruby!  One of the best customs I've seen in a while.   :)

Thanks bros. I wish I did have them in wild and crazy positions on my shelf. Unfortunately, we are in the process of turning my office into my son's new bedroom. All of the star wars stuff except maybe the customs are going into storage while construction happens on the house. Maybe I'll get to see them again in a couple of years. :'(

Holy crap, Phruby! Just yesterday, I was perusing tihs toystore's POTJ and Saga collection, and I kept running into Aura Sing, saying to myself how much I hated that figure. But THIS is just awesome. I think it really matches her stature n the movie, and your paint job apps give her a less cartoony feel. The use of micro(wo)man parts is excellent!

I'm not too familiar with the Microman stuff, though. Do they just come as already-designed characters, or do they sell "blanks" for customizing and such?

Great work!

They do come in blanks and a rainbow of colors. The women come in different chest sizes too. Check ebay under microman to see what I mean. Zira28 is the best seller of these things. They come from Japan in about three days.

Well done Paul, well done.  Not one of my favorite characters, but you nailed it.  You have a knack for painting and accessorizing those microman/lady bodies in a way that helps deemphasize the joints, and I think this one is your best effort yet.

Phurby, this has to be the best microman/lady custom i have seen. it is by far my favorite that you have done. Aurra really lends herself to this platform and the paint apps are superb. the only nitpick i can "pick" is the head is a little high (neck a tiny bit long) otherwise its excellent.

Here are some ideas for some future microlady customs.

white microlady for a snowbunny Padme.
green microlady for Oola
flesh microlady for white dress princess leia
green and blue microladys for Tonika sisters.
black microman for stormtrooper, clones, darth vader
flesh microman for han solo, luke skywalker

During our JediDefender meet and greets, I've gotten to meet and get to know Jon (Darth Slothus). He's a great guy and very cool. While thinking about his user name, it came to me that he needs a custom star wars figure to represent himself on these boards. So with some suggestions from him and his son, I've created this custom Sith Lord to act as his forum avatar and a decoration for his truck. I hope he likes it. ;D

I know I've seen this toy before and might even have it... when I was working on the Dathomir parts of the Rykrof Enloe series I bought all kinds of little creatures for it.

This is a cool/different kind of custom.  Well done Phruby.  The texture on the fur looks awesome.  I'm sure Slothus has to be happy.

The custom's looking good Paul...  One of the more unique customs in a while actually.  Creative and different.

Edit: What the hell is the base though?  I've looked high and low for good "animal" bases for customs seems to be difficult if not impossible for me.

As Darth Slothus say, the base is a Meghatherium figure you can buy at most Natural History Museums or Zoos. Its about 4" tall and no joints. I thought that figure would make a better Sith lord than this one:

I'm not familiar with the base figure, Phruby...did you do the paint apps on the fur, or did it come that way? If you did the fur, great job...it's really well detailed and realistic. I also like the custom weapon. This is a wacky but fun custom, you must have had a good time with this one.

The first one is a set of Black hole stormtrooper bust-ups.

Thanks guys. Let's put it this way. Twi'liks males are typically ugly looking (ie Bib Fortuna) while females are typically beautiful and sexy (ie. Oola) unless of course they are related to George Lucas. I'd put this one as a male warrior. But I'm afraid to look under the loin cloth to find out.  :o

Don't look under the loincloth, Phruby! That's where madness lies.

Great looking Twi'lek, and a really creative use of a figure I'd never given a second thought.

Thanks a ton Paul! I picked up an extra Jerjerrod and painted him black. (Left the rank on though.) Previous figures I've painted I used Testors flat. I'm sure everyone knows that their flats still leave a glossy sheen. I went to the hobby shop and they helped me pick a new brand, Tamiya Acrylic. Couldn't be more pleased with the result.

I love Tamiya Acrylic. I use it exclusively for all my customs. The only problem is the smell of paints makes my wife instantly throw up. So its been hard to get more painting done.  :-\ I can't wait until this kid is born, then I can get back to painting.

Sorry to hijack your thread Paul but I wanted to chime in.  I use Games Workshop and Reaper paints.  Hemble turned me on the Reaper ones and their "Master" series are just outstanding.  I haven't tried Tamiya yet.

That's a little too much info  ;).

I used Tamiya paints back when I made WW2 model planes and AMT/ERTL SW kits. Made a great X-Wing and Slave-I if I do say so myself. I use the GW for my customs, but I might go back and try some Tamiya paints again. Their "military" colours are plain awesome.

First up is the Maul Santa from 12/24/06:

Next up is my latest additions to the vintage Droids line. I give you Admiral Screed and Kleb Zellock.

For these, I tried to get the most accruate colors possible to the real prototypes. All the joints have rubber pipping to make the joint firm and to make it easy to disassemble.

Actually, I did a vintage style rebel fleet trooper a few years ago. This is basically a han solo body with a death star trooper head.

Those figures I believe were originally sculpted by either Bantha5 or RickyUK.

Looking good Paul! You did a real nice job on the cape, what material is that? That paint is really nice a smooth as well, kudos on that. It is nice to see vintage customs, it is a really nice change of pace from clones and anything else PT.

So where do all the parts from this guy come from? Did someone manage to cast a prototype, or did someone sculpt one themselves?
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Gaff (7/25/07)
Post by: Phrubruh on July 27, 2007, 01:27 PM
Personally, I believe clones are overrated. I've been wanting to add this one to my collection for awhile now. This is a cast from bantha5's original sculpt. I don't think he got ahold of the real prototype but it doesn't have a copyright date or peg holes. The figure has rubber inserts for the arm and leg holes to keep the figure tight. The cape is made from some fabric my wife had laying around.

Now I've got four more casts of Droids prototypes to track down. (Jessica Meade (http://theswca.com/index.php?action=disp_item&item_id=35761), Mon Julpa (http://theswca.com/index.php?action=disp_item&item_id=35760), Mungo Baobab (http://theswca.com/index.php?action=disp_item&item_id=48797) and Governor Koong (http://theswca.com/index.php?action=disp_item&item_id=48799) )

Actually, I'm having total problems with painting the ballon skins. It cracks when you move the figure. I'm going to have to go with either a red balloon and try to match the color for the head or just forget the balloon skin and paint the figure.

She's very nice paul.  Could you use a black baloon for the bikini she wears?  Thats the only thing that i think needs adjustment.
As it is, her top just looks stuck on, like an afterthought.
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - Darth Talon (8/22/07)
Post by: Phrubruh on August 24, 2007, 09:41 AM
Now that I think about it, a black balloon would have worked better for the bikini. It wouldn't have had the thickness the leather has. The top is suppost to be at an angle but I didn't get the angle quite right. When the glue touched the latex its almost impossible to remove the leather without destroying the latex. Eh, you live and you learn.
Title: Re: Master Phruby's Customs Thread - SA Scorch!!! (9/6/07)
Post by: Phrubruh on September 6, 2007, 09:40 PM
As a birthday present to myself, I've finished my super actuated version of Scorch. This has been a year in the making. I finally figured out how to do this. I basically used a Microlady body and added a black balloon as a body suit. The thin frame of the Microlady was prefect for the hollowed out armor that I made from another Scorch. It solved alot of problems when it came to the armor not fitting around the body. The head is from a TAC stormtrooper with the end of a balloon acting as a cowl to hide the neck joint. He is then given a better paint job but still keeping with the Hasbro stock colors. I hope you enjoy it!

Now the micro-man figure really sets this Republic Commando off. I have always disliked the micro-man bodies, because they looked to lanky and didn't really fit in with the Star Wars figures. This one though looks great and the extra highth from the micro-man doesn't really show, as it is a plus. I have always thought the Republic Commando looked a little on the short and chubby side, so this is a big improvement. Really killer job on this one. I might have to try this one down the road. Thanks for sharing.

Microman is a toy line by Takara in Japan. In the US they were called Micronauts in '70s. Other toy lines grew from them such as the Transformers. A good site to learn about Microman is Microman Forever (http://microforever.com/main.htm).

This figure is based on their Material Force line. This is basically an undetailed artist's dummy. They come in a large number of base colors. There are three types. Micromen, MicroLady and MicroSister. The female figures have four different chest sizes (small, medium, large and porn star) ;)  For Scorch I used a small chest size so the armor could fit over them.

You can typically pick them up off ebay for about $7. I always use the seller Zira28. She charges about $8 shipping and will typically arrive within three days of payment.

I remember when you started this, you were making casts of the scorch armor... is that what you ended with, or is
this hollowed hasbro and not a hollowed cast? Turned out perfectly either way.

Sorry for the long delay between projects. I'm currently working on a SA Shadow Stormtrooper complete with blue body suit. It's coming along ok. In the mean time, I came across a UGH Boba Fett and thought the coin and figure would look great on a vintage Droids Boba Fett card. So I dug out a bubble and carded the figure and gold coin. Taking a break from the cute cutoms and doing something a little more dark. Here is my Dark Trooper Commander. I figure since Stormtroopers can be color coded now, why not Dark Troopers. Its funny but that paint came from the same jar as the gray Dark Trooper but for some reason ended up looking black instead of gun metal gray. Oh well.

Nice Admiral Daala figure Paul. Did you have to dremel the Scarlett head any for it to fit the Imperial figure?

Yah, Scarlett has a really small peg ball. I had to almost shave the officer neck post by half to make it fit. I had to repaint the neck post too since she is casted in uniform gray.

What was this head from?  Look slike Sculpy hair?

There was a Baroness with removable glasses a few years back.  I've been half keeping an eye on e-bay to pick one of them up for an Isard. There was also the Mom (i think?) from spy kids that would have made a good Isard head.

I've been planning to use the Liz Swan from POTC III, with the long braid for a Daala.  The Scarlett Daala turned out very nise though too.

I've got some catching up to do here Paul.

Starkiller/EU Leia - I'm really diggin' the paint scheme on this one Paul. It works so well I think I'm going to steal this idea for myself once I find the time to do some customizing again.  :)

Padawan Rose - Rose is very cute Paul. Was she dressed up for Halloween there or were you guys headed off to Disneyland? Nice work on the custom too. I'll bet they are really going to appreciate those one day. I'm looking forward to ROTJ Randall!

Christmas Heroes - Those are great. I wish I would have thought of that before Christmas. The GHs work so well as cute little ornaments. Nice wirk with the sculpting and the painting.

Colorado Rockies Trooper - That's what he is supposed to be, right? ;) In all seriousness I like this one too. The Black actually looks really good with the silver body suit. I'm not real big on the purple arms though. I think a navy blue may have worked better. Still it is a very nice repaint.

Updated Daala and Isard - Nice work on these Paul. I'm going to have to find some female Imps so I can do the same thing myself. I'm not really a fan of the Elizabeth swan head. The likeness is bad, the hair has just always looked rather flat to me. Great choice of reds for her tunic, it looks very much like blood.

Nice work on everything Paul. I'm looking forward to seeing your latest!

Thanks Ryan. I'm thinking of repainting that dark trooper with a different color stripping or maybe somekind of logo-like thing on his chest. The purple wasn't as well received as I hoped.

ROTJ Randall is coming along. The picture for the card is done and the figure is almost done. (thanks to Glassman for the baby head cast). That should be the next figure to be posted.

After that, I've still got my microman shadow trooper, SA dark trooper and and stormtrooper pinup to finish. Those are the hard projects. Lots of dremeling to do.

Here is my first custom is quite a long time. Thanks to Chewie for getting in back into this with our new group project over at Yak. We are making Shaak Ti from The Force Unleashed. For right now, this one is a very simple jedi custom that I call Jedi Master Bond. He is the only jedi to have license to kill and prefers to use his blaster instead of a lightsaber.

It's been a while since my last custom. Here I've finished up a Dark Trooper that has been sitting around for a while. I wanted to make one that mirrors a normal stormtrooper. I figure that if the Empire ever put these guys into actual service, they would make them look more like the rest of their troops. In this one, I've given him elbow and knee joints. The joints are covered in pieces of balloons. The helmet is removable since the Dark Trooper is also an infantry exoskeleton. The rings around the neck are rubber bands from old GI Joes. I had planned on adding a rebel insignia to the shoulders and add the story on how the rebels captured an exoskeleton suit but I never got around to making the decals. However, I think he looks pretty good in white.

Excellent work, Phruby. He looks much more like an Imperial trooper now. Those GI Joe bands for the neck rings look great! Did it take many layers of white to get him this pristine?  ;)

Now, go paint up the gun as well  ;D

Thanks guys. That was five layers of white over a previous bad paint job that was sticky. I still see lots of imperfections in it but you got to know when to drop a project. I'll paint up the gun for you. ;)

Now I've got to force myself to finish that microman shadow stormtrooper.
