Saga Collection '06 / Favorite Vehicles?
« on: September 12, 2005, 10:42 AM »
Ok, this sort of covers all the lines (POTF2, TPM, POTJ, Saga, OTC, ROTS, even vintage), so I wasn't quite sure where to put this.  I thought since "The Saga Collection" would be the first line that truly encompassed the entire Saga, this might be good.  If not, feel free to move it mods :).  After reading a number of positive comments on the "new wings" TIE Fighter, I was wondering what are some of your favorite vehicles of the line?  A favorte, a top 5, top 10, or rank them all, I was just curious which vehicles are your favorites...or you think are the best.  Is your decision based on your "movie favorites", or just the fact that it is a nice toy/sculpt?  Maybe scale has a lot to do with it, as it seems very few are actually in line in that area.  Overall, which vehicles/ships do you feel are the best of the line so far?  I personally don't have all of the ships from the POTF2 era (still looking to pick them up over the next few years here and there, unless they are re-released)...but here's a few of my favorites:

Millennium Falcon (Vintage/POTF2/OTC/ROTS) - I know it isn't anywhere "to scale", but it has always been my favorite ship of the Saga.  Plus, I had a blast with the vintage version as a kid too.  It basically became my carrying case as well, throwing all my figures in the back and going off to imagine up some sort of adventure.

Landspeeder (Saga) - One of my favorites of the whole line, and maybe my most favorite.  The sculpt, scale, etc. all looks great to me.  It just looks nice on the shelf, and really seems like a good representation of the film version to me.

FX X-Wing (POTF2) - I got this for $20 on clearance, and it is to date the only X-Wing I've ever known.  Its a good size, and looks nice as well I think.  Plus, it has some electronics, which is sometimes missed nowadays in the new vehicles/re-releases.  I sometimes wish it had an "empty" cockpit, so I could put an actual figure in there, but otherwise I do like this ship quite a bit.

Slave 1 (OTC) - Repainted Jango's Slave 1, and I like the increase in size/detail of the newer sculpt.  Always a favorite ship of mine as well, and I think this one looks pretty nice.  I know it isn't everyone's favorite, but I like it.

ARC 170 (ROTS) - I usually lean more towards OT stuff, but this is just a nice ship.  Big ship for a fairly decent price.  I like the OT-ish feel to it (and other ROTS vehicles), and I could see it being a lot of fun for kids as well.

Jedi Starfighters (ROTS) - For some reason, I just really like the Obi-Wan and Anakin starfighters from ROTS.  I have the first release versions (not the TRU repaints), and I like both of them.  Just seem like nice ships.

Republic Gunship (AOTC/Saga) - Although I have cooled a bit on the other prequel movie stuff, this really is a nice ship.  I remember being pretty amazed when I first opened this up, just because it was so big.  Another ship that I could see being a lot of fun for kiddos (if they have it), and I'm glad to have one.  I don't think I could find space for more than that though, the wingspan on this thing is an enemy of shelves ;).

Snowspeeder (Vintage/POTF/POTJ) - I don't have a modern one (yet), but this and the Falcon were the only vintage vehicles I had.  It might not be anything spectacular for others, but I think the nostalgia factor plays a lot with me here.  Plus, I was always a fan of the Hoth battle.  Had a lot of fun with this ship as a kid though.  I'm not an expert on scale (I trust JesseJames' opinion on scale issues), but I understand this one is even a tad big.  Another OT Favorite though.

Those are just a few off the top of my head, but there are others I enjoy.  Also, there are a number of ships that are probably great, but I just don't have quite yet (new TIE, POTF2 ships such as AT-AT, Snowspeeder, Y-Wing, Skiff, etc.)  What are some of your favorites?

I've never really gotten into the MicroMachines, Action Fleet, Titanium, Micro, etc., but I've recently thought about picking up some of the vehicles because they are kind of spiffy and might make nice display pieces.  I was curious what was/is your favorite overall "line" of these vehicles/playsets?  Do you prefer the now-cancelled Action Fleet, do you enjoy the current Titanium Series or Micro lines?  If I were to go an pick up a few OT ships, what line would be the best?

LEGO / LEGO Minifigures
« on: August 25, 2005, 03:19 PM »
You'll have to excuse me, because I know next to nothing about the LEGO line as I've never really collected it.  Anyways, I'm sort of becoming interested in picking some of this stuff up, and I don't know where to start.  I've thought about, for space purposes, just sticking with the figures at this point and maybe getting some sets later on.  Is there anywhere to purchase minifigs individually (or just ebay), or even a guide to what minifigs are out or coming up?  Any other opinions or advice on the LEGO line in general are always welcome.

Other Collectibles / Most You've Ever Spent on a Single Collectible
« on: August 24, 2005, 11:29 AM »
This doesn't have to necessarily relate strictly to "other collectibles", or even to just Star Wars.  As I've been weighing options lately (with input from the Mrs.) on what collectible lines I might branch off into, if any, the issue of price is definitely a big point.  It just got me to thinking about how much is too much to spend for a collectible.  I think everyone has a different "top dollar" depending on budget, but I was just curious what was the most some of you have spent (or would spend) on a single, individual collectible.  I know I am a definite lightweight, due to budget constraints, so I think the most I've spent for a single item in my collection was for the POTJ B-Wing ($40 plus tax).  That's the highest I can think of off hand.  Of course, that doesn't help the cumulative total for the year(s) when you factor in all the figures, glasses, misc, etc.  There have been items I've considered, but the timing just hasn't worked out yet (FX Lightsabers, Gentle Giant Mini Busts, and SW Kubricks in particular).  Anyways, if you don't mind sharing that is, what is the most you have ever spent on an individual piece in your collection?

Watto's Junk Yard / Too Much Stuff?
« on: July 28, 2005, 01:14 PM »
This can deal with Star Wars in particular, or overall collecting interests...so I thought it might be best here.  I've noticed lately with many of us here on the forums that it seems like there has been a lot of thinning out of collections, selling off items, general "need to keep things in check" type of comments, and even some people dropping various collecting lines.  Some of it might be the movies ending, some of it might be many of us reaching the age or point in life where we don't have the money or space for it, or maybe interests have just shifted.  I've noticed that some people have moved away from "toys" into higher end stuff, which is an area I'd like to get into someday...if I ever have any money ;).  Have any of you just gotten to the point where you are looking at everything and thinking "wow, that's a lot of crap stuff"?  Do you have to buy stuff and then put it right into storage, hoping to put it out some day?  What are your plans for your future collecting?

I know for me, I've really been trying to keep things more in check.  There are a number of areas (both SW and non-SW) that I'm interested in collecting, but to be honest, I just don't have the budget for it overall.  Plus, the space.  I've been able, for the most part so far, to display the majority of my Star Wars collection...but some of that, as well as other interests have already had to stay packed away.  I think I'll always be collecting Star Wars in some fashion, and will probably be with the 3 3/4" line until the end...unless it really gets to be all repacks or stuff I don't need/care about.  Outside of Star Wars, I've tried to limit it to one other area of interest (currently collecting anyways, I have other "past" lines)...and usually in a smaller buying scale compared to Star Wars.  With some minor exceptions, I've been able to do that (Marvel/DC Superheroes...or "Superheroes" to have it as one category :P).  Anyways, I'm rambling on now, but is anyone else scaling back (or thinking about it), limiting their various "lines", giving up things altogether, or just keep on plugging along?  I guess lucky for Star Wars collectors (or collectors in general) there are so many lines out there now, in so many different price areas, that you can really alter what you want to collect and make it fit your budget and interests.  Just curious what my fellow collectors have been thinking lately.

From the sounds of the various Q and A sessions Hasbro has done recently, it sounds as if the vehicles offered in "The Saga Collection", if any, will be repaints and retools.  No Cloud Car, at least not for this year from what has been reported.  One vehicle that does seem to be confirmed is a retooled TIE Fighter with new scaled wings.  Knowing that any vehicles released, at least next year, will be using previous molds and likely involve only repaints and/or some minor retooling, what would you like to see?  Are there any that you think should be re-released again?  Here's a few I wouldn't mind seeing, although I'm sure some will disagree:

Snowspeeder - Only because I missed it the first couple of times.  One of the few vehicles I had as a kid (but don't have anymore), so it holds a special place for me in that aspect.  I wouldn't mind seeing it released again, but it was just out in POTJ, so it might not happen.

AT-AT - Although I probably don't have the room for it, I'd try to figure something out.  This is the "big one", and it would be nice to see it on the shelves again.  If not, I'll probably try to pick up a loose sample from POTF2 some day when I have the spare cash.  Probably not a real likely re-release, due to pricepoint.  It seems like anything over $15 (Unleashed) scares Hasbro and retail at this point, especially in a non-movie year.

Tatooine Skiff - It saw release in POTF2, but many people seemed to have missed it (I did too).  Could be a nice re-release, and not a real high pricepoint.

Speeder Bike Sets - Not necessarily needed, but might be a neat lower pricepoint release.  If Hasbro comes out with some new versions of Luke and Leia Endor, along with a SA Scout Trooper, they would make great pack ins with a speeder bike.  Again, might not be likely, but I'd like it.

Ewok Battle Wagon - Again, maybe not a popular choice, but might be an option for re-release.  When I was a wee lad, I know I wanted one of these...and especially wanted the Village playset...but that's a whole other topic. :)

TIE Bomber - Maybe a possibility, wasn't a real wide release from what I saw.  I saw one once, and didn't have the money at the time, so missed out.  Might be an option for a re-release if the demand is there.

I guess my list is only OT vehicles, but right now that's all I'm interested in really.  There are probably other choices for retools and repaints that many of you can think of, these are just off the top of my head.  I'm happy with my Falcon, TIEs, Slave 1, and X-Wing...and those are nice vehicles too...but they have been released somewhat recently so aside from the new scaled wings TIE, they can probably rest for 2006.  Are there any ships you'd like to see repainted or re-released?  From the sounds of things that's the only way we're going to get any vehicles next year.

Other Collectibles / Star Wars Customs (Choppers)
« on: July 20, 2005, 10:12 AM »
Rebelscum is reporting that Hasbro has plans for a new "Star Wars Choppers" line, consisting of our favorite characters (Luke, Vader, and Fett are mentioned) on top of motorcycles.  Yikes.  If this turns out to be true, this is really starting to go to far.  Please Hasbro, just stick to the normal figure line, vehicles that are actually in the movies or at least the comics/books if you have to stretch.  It bothers me more the fact that they can't remake (or even just re-release) the Cloud Car, but they can do brand new molding/tooling for Star Wars motorcycles.  Maybe this will turn out to just be rumor fodder, but to me this is a terrible idea.

Hall of Justice / Mattel DC Superheroes
« on: July 14, 2005, 11:10 AM »
It looks like Mattel must have gotten tired of seeing Marvel Legends get all the hype, and they are starting up a new "DC Superheroes" line.  You can see a mock up of the packaging, as well as links to the first "wave" of figures HERE.  If they do these ML-style, they could be pretty cool.  There seems to be conflicting information out there, with Superherotimes saying that this is a "DC Superheroes" line, where TNI seems to be leaning towards this being a continuation of the Batman line.  Sounds like the sculpts will be done by the Four Horsemen (from MOTU fame), so that might be cool.  I'm not sure, but either way it could be a neat way to get ML scaled figures of Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc.

Actually, from the looks of the first wave (Batman, Superman, Bizarro, Bane, Scarecrow, Azrael), it does look awfully Bat-themed, so maybe it just is the Batman line and SuperHeroTimes was incorrect.

Now...after reading through some information at TNI, it sounds as if the 1st wave will be Bat-themed (Batman, Bane, Scarecrow, Azrael, etc.) where the 2nd wave will be Superman themed (Superman, Bizarro, Darkseid, etc.), so maybe this will end up involving the whole DC Universe.  I hope so.

TheJawa.com has a report up that there is a Diamond exclusive multipack on the way called "Hunt for the Millennium Falcon"...it includes Vader, Boba Fett, Dengar, Bossk, Zuckuss, 4-LOM, and IG-88.  Although all repacks of course, it is a nice idea, and something that probably could have/should have been done during the OTC hoopla.  You can visit the link above for more, and check out some pictures of it HERE.

Revenge of the Sith / Happy for the "Slow Down"?
« on: June 10, 2005, 11:48 AM »
Although I do really enjoy seeing Star Wars all over the place, and really having a nice prominent place in the toy aisles right now, I think I'm kind of enjoying/looking forward to the "slow down" that seems to be starting now.  Having 44 (or more, depending on area) figures out within two months time, along with all the vehicles, beasts, Unleashed, Galactic Heroes, BK Toys, etc. etc. etc. was a little overwhelming at times, at least for me.  It seems that now things will be going back to a normal "Star Wars collecting" pace.  Our local Wal-Mart has now cut its Star Wars aisle in half, with Fantastic Four taking up the rest of the space for now.  They are also cramming as much as they can into the "regular" space in the action figure aisle, so I think the transition to going back to that space is slowly coming.  That could be a bad thing though, because they really seem to have the same figures hanging there for the most part now (Tarfful, Ki Adi, Mas, Polis, Luminara, SBD, Clone Pilot, etc.) and I'm afraid that the later waves are going to be tougher to find.  You never know though, because this stuff really has been selling well here (and elsewhere, from the way it sounds).

Like I said, I guess I kind of feel bad saying this, but I (and my wallet) sort of welcome the slow down right now.  Just out looking for the Tarkin wave, and those Target glasses if they show, and otherwise I'm pretty well caught up.  I'm just hoping waves like Tarkin's, the Mustafar Anakin, etc. aren't going to be impossible to find now.  It is funny though, looking at both Target and Wal-Mart now, I don't think there is a basic figure of Obi-Wan, Anakin, Chewie, Padme, 3PO, R2, or Vader to be found.  In fact, quite a few of the original 24-32 figures are all gone now, aside from Tarfful, SBD, and the background Jedi.  I never would have guessed that, to be honest with you.  Is anyone else happy for the slow down, or am I just being a terrible Star Wars fan for thinking that way?  Don't get me wrong, more/new stuff is always better, I guess I just felt a little overwhelmed the last couple of months...through no one's fault but my own really ;).

Vintage Kenner / Favorite Vintage Playset(s)?
« on: June 7, 2005, 03:11 PM »
To me, the playsets were one of the coolest parts of the vintage line.  Some were terrible inaccurate and underscale, but back then, it didn't matter.  Although I didn't really have many myself (aside from the Jabba the Hutt playset), a friend of mine basically had all of them, and they sure were fun.  I'm still working on getting the complete, loose figure set (undecided on vehicles, since many POTF2 ones are the same mold...and vintage can be expensive)....but I'd like to eventually get a couple of playsets as well.  Of the playsets from the vintage days, which were your favorites?  The Death Star is an obvious choice I think, and probably my favorite overall just because of the size and different features of it.  I was also a fan of the Dagobah set, and as much as some people seem to dislike the Ewoks, the Ewok Village playset was pretty neat to me as a kid ;).  What are some of your favorites?

The Prequel Trilogy / Lucas and the Prequels
« on: June 6, 2005, 01:31 PM »
I originally posted this over in the ROTS thread, but thought it might be good to have it over here too.  Basically, this article (in Entertainment Weekly - May 20, 2005 edition) talks about the whole "journey" with George Lucas, and he touches upon a few things I found interesting regarding the prequels.  Here are a few of the highlights I picked out, including comments from both McCallum and Lucas regarding the prequels and their evolution.

Regarding what the fans wanted for the prequels....

"I think the problem most hardcore fans had with the movies is that they wanted to cut to the chase" says prequels producer Rick McCallum.  "They watned Darth.  You could almost go from Episode III now and do two more films....you know, Episode 3.1 and 3.2.  Just to see a Vader evolve...."  McCallum pauses, and the idea just hangs there, tantalizing.  "But those aren't the films George wanted to make".

Lucas on the Prequels and the gamble of TPM.....

Lucas believes his biggest gamble was starting the saga with Jake Lloyd's gee whiz kid in Menace.  Even his marketing team was skeptical.  "That's a little bit of why it got overhyped.  People (here) were nervous if it was going to break even," says Lucas of Menace's notorious promotional push.  "I didn't care.  I said, This is the story.  I know I"m going to need to use Hamburger Helper to get it to two hours, but that's what I want to do."

By Lucas' own calculation, 60 percent of the prequel plot he dreamed up decades earlier takes place in Sith.  The remaining 40 percent he split evenly between Menace and Clones, meaning each film contained a lot of.....filler.  Or, in Lucas parlance, "jazz riffs....things that I enjoy.....just doodle around a lot"--mostly in the form of blending live action and animation to create exotic worlds and emotionally resonant characters.  You know, like Jar Jar.  "That's the whole point to me.  Making it the way I want it to be.  That's what it comes down to," he says.  "Somebody's got to be happy out of all this.  It might as well be me."

Lucas and the beginnings of the Prequels........

After finishing ROTJ in 1983, capping a decade of Star Wars labor, George Lucas wanted to focus on raising a family with his wife Marcia, and build Lucasfilm into a vehicle for financing and servicing the films he wanted to make.  "Then I got divorced," says Lucas, "and that sort of screwed that up.  I had to start all over again."  He means emotionally and financially: The split reportedly cost him $50 million of his fortune.  He spent the next decade or so raising his three adopted children, shoring up Lucasfilm, producing a few movies and a TV series (Young Indy), and trying to determine when....and with what.....he'd return to direction.  In 1994 "after much back and forth", he chose Star Wars.

"I tried to get out of doing it," confesses Lucas.  He even asked (half jokingly) Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard to each take a prequel: "Those are the two guys I agree with aesthetically the most."  If they had said yes? "I would have said, Good!"  But both said no.  "He was reluctant to get back in the harness.  Its just the hours and the intensity," says Howard.  "Steven told him the same thing: George, there's one person to do these, and that's you.  YOu just have to get up out of your chair and leave your desk.  I know the ranch is an enticing place, but just go make these movies".

Anyways...great article, and a nice read.  I really didn't know some of these things that Lucas thought about the prequels, and basically admitting that he had to stretch the story out and use "filler" for the first two prequels.  Plus, the fact that he initially wanted help with them from Howard and Spielberg was just interesting to me.  The whole "60 percent of the plot for the prequels takes place in ROTS, with the other 40 percent split between TPM and AOTC" really explains a lot I think :).

The Prequel Trilogy / Prequel to a Prequel?
« on: May 26, 2005, 11:38 AM »
Big ole honkin' grain of salt with this one, but Moviehole has a short article up detailing that George Lucas has apparently told one of Cinescape's "scoopers" that he has an idea in the back of his head for one more installment of the Star Wars movie franchise...a prequel 88 years prior to TPM, detailing how the Jedi got control of the universe back from the Sith, with Yoda serving as a principal character.  Probably just rumor, and I definitely don't expect it, but just some food for thought if anyone is interested.

After seeing the movie this past weekend (great!), it seemed like there were a number of characters or other things that we've gotten toys of (already) that were either barely seen, or not seen at all.  I've only seen the movie once so far, so I might have missed a few things that were there.

Clone with Jetpack (didn't really see this, or I missed it)
Mon Mothma (cut from film, maybe in the background and I missed it)
Shaak Ti and Luminara Unduli (in council scenes perhaps, but barely seen...then again, they are "background characters" :P)
Yoda on Cancell (this might have been there, saw the Cancells, but didn't remember Yoda riding them.  My wife said she thought she did, so I might have just missed it)
White Clonetroopers - They were in there, but really, I think we saw various colored clones much more often.  For all the army building many of us have been doing, I really didn't seen a ton of the plain old white clones, more of the different variations.

Watto's Junk Yard / Xbox 360
« on: May 13, 2005, 02:52 PM »
I didn't see a discussion on it, but Microsoft previewed their upcoming system, the X Box 360 this week.  You can read a little about it on this MSNBC article HERE.  I personally haven't ever owned the original Xbox, but have been fairly impressed when playing a friend's.  It sounds like this new version could be pretty spiffy as well.  Is the Playstation 3 expected to be released this year as well?  I haven't heard much about that for a little while.  Right now, I have a Nintendo Gamecube...which I have been quite happy with, but I don't know if I could justify putting the money down for another new gaming system this time around.  Of course, it always gets a lot more tempting once you see them in stores or play them somewhere :).  From what I have read, this new XBox is expected to retail for around $300 initially, but that could be wrong.
