Hall of Justice / DC Comics' "Super Powers"
« on: August 26, 2004, 02:34 PM »
Thinking about toy lines from my youth, and got to thinking about the old Super Powers line.  Did anyone else have these (or maybe still do)?  This was one of my favorite "other" lines as a kid, still have quite a few of them, although our dog got a hold of my favorite, Batman.  I've often considered trying to pick up another one via ebay, we'll see.  Maybe someday.  I think this line (along with the "Super Friends" cartoon), is much of the reason I really enjoy the Justice League cartoon/concept today.  I know its a cartoon, but I do like to watch it ;)  Anyways, anyone else enjoy Super Powers?

Watto's Junk Yard / The "Space" Issue
« on: August 24, 2004, 10:55 AM »
While reading a number of posts and threads from a number of different forum members (myself included), it seems that space is becoming more and more of an issue for those of us who collect the various Star Wars (and other franchise/toy) lines.  I know since we've moved, and I've packed/unpacked and tried to figure out how I'd like to display things, space is something that has got me thinking more and more about my collection.  I was wondering if any of you are having space issues, what you are doing about it, or what thoughts you have had about it.  I know personally, it has forced me to really take a hard look at my collecting, and decide what I really want/think I need.  The combination of space, money, and a few other issues has brought me to the conclusion that I will likely be scaling back any "other" collections, and focus primarily on Star Wars.  Although I do enjoy other lines as well, and would really like to collect them, I just don't know if it is possible...or even logical for me to do so.  Aside from a few LOTR figures I'd still like to pick up eventually, and possibly a Spider-Man figure here or there, I think its going to be Star Wars and only Star Wars from here on out.  We all know there is more than enough of that to collect by itself!  Anyways, back to the main issue, has space become a big problem for you (or is it heading that way)...do you have a plan of action for it, or has it helped/caused you to re-assess your collection and/or display?  I'd be curious to see what some of you are considering.  It is tough to give up some of the other lines I'd like to collect, but at the same time I know it is probably the right thing to do.  Keeping a "tally" this year of what I have spent on collectibles doesn't help the matter any either ;)

Power of the Force 2 / The Beginning of POTF2
« on: August 13, 2004, 02:38 PM »
I was curious to hear some of your opinions, stories, etc. about when the POTF2 line first started out, and when Star Wars figures were back on the pegs.  I have to be honest, I wasn't really collecting right when it started, getting into it more so around 1999, about the time of Phantom Menace.  I was aware that the toys existed sometime before that, since my younger brother was receiving some things as b-day gifts at that time.  Anyways, just looking over the waves, figures, etc. online, I bet it was a pretty exciting time to see Star Wars on the pegs again.  Sure, they were big and buff, and most of them look pretty poor compared to today's figs, but I can still imagine it was pretty neat.

How did you first know they were back?  The internet community wasn't quite the same back then, was there another route (maybe commercials that I don't remember).  Did you know what was coming out next, in upcoming waves, or was there a time of "ta da, new figures" like it was in the vintage days?  Did you have any idea that Hasbro would continue on so far, or did it seem like it was a short limited series?  Were figures tough to find?  Anyways, just curious as to some of your personal stories for that period in Star Wars collecting.  I kind of missed out on it, and although I have some figures from that period now, it would have been neat to be a collector during that time.

Original Trilogy Collection / Hasbro Update: 2005 Figures
« on: August 11, 2004, 09:52 AM »
Hasbro has updated with a feature on the figures coming up for 2005 (the ones shown at Comic-Con).  You can see the Coruscant wave carded, otherwise nothing much else new that I could see.  You can check it out HERE

Vintage Kenner / Complete Loose Figure Collection?
« on: August 10, 2004, 02:36 PM »
I know I am behind many of you in the vintage forum, who already have a complete loose figure collection from the vintage days.  Is anyone else still working towards it?  If you already have your complete collection, what are some of your favorite pieces (or stories on how you obtained them?).  I try to pick up a few more here and there (in between modern purchases) to work towards a complete collection (someday)...but admit that I haven't been able to get much for quite some time.  I'm hoping to start back in again here soon, with a little bit of a break with much of the OTC line being recarded figures.

I have basically started from scratch, because although I did have most of my figures from my childhood, they weren't complete (or necessarily mint in some cases), and I wanted everything to be.  Anyways, so far I have 31 figures (that I am happy with the condition), and I'm working first towards getting everything from the New Hope (or Star Wars, if you prefer) lines through the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi lines.  Then, if I ever get that far, we'll take a look at the POTF figures.  Although I do enjoy the modern stuff, something is just so fun about working at finding, scouting out good deals, etc. on vintage figures.  Plus, in some ways it is nice to know there is an "end" to your collection, and you aren't constantly getting further behind :)  Anyways, anything you'd like to share about your loose figure collection...do you have it, what are you missing, what are your favorite figures/stories, etc.?

Maybe this belongs better in a different section, since it isn't necessarily "exclusive" to the OTC figures, but since that is what is supposed to be currently shipping, I thought it somewhat applied here.  If not, feel free to move!  Anyways, I was just wondering when you go out checking the stores for Star Wars, and you see something new (that you want), do you go ahead and buy it right away?  My wife gives me a hard time because when I see something new, that I don't have (and want), I usually just buy it right away (within reason, have to pass on higher ticket items like the new Falcon, etc. sometimes).  I do this because (1) I want to add it to my collection and (2) Star Wars, at least in my area, often seems like if you skip it the first time you see it, you might not see it again.

Of course, it always depends on the figure/vehicle/toy/statue, etc., as some of them seem to come back again (especially lately, with repack mania going on this year), but I guess there is always just this thought in the back of my head that "if I don't get it now, its not showing up here again."  Of course, I am within reason, we're not going without food or something so I can have a Star Wars toy ;).  I was just wondering if any of you experience this too, it seems like collecting Star Wars is a hobby that can sometimes be "get 'em while the getting is good"

Other Collectibles / Star Wars Posters
« on: August 9, 2004, 02:07 PM »
I don't know how many of you buy/collect/display posters, but I really enjoy them.  My wife bought me the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi movie posters, and framed them, for my birthday a couple of years ago.  I've always wanted to get the rest of the series, to have all six movie posters displayed.  For now, I just want to get the New Hope one next, and I have been trying to decide which version to pick up.  I was curious what some of your opinions are, between these two posters (courtesy AllPosters.com).  Also, feel free to post any posters you like, enjoy, collect, etc.  Really looking forward to that VOTC ANH poster that Hasbro put together as well, looked pretty neat.  Anyways, which of these do you prefer for A New Hope (or Star Wars, as we used to know it)?

Other Collectibles / Star Wars "Buddies"
« on: August 9, 2004, 10:48 AM »
While checking TRU a couple of times this past weekend for any new VOTC sightings (sadly, none), I see that our store here has started to have these buddies hanging around.  I've neer had any of these, although we did pick up the Chewbacca for our nephew when these were released in the POTF2 days.  I was slightly tempted to get these (maybe because I didn't find anything else around town), but in the end held off.  Do any of you have/want these?

Original Trilogy Collection / Setting the Bar
« on: August 4, 2004, 05:43 PM »
Although there are still a few shortcomings in many of our eyes with the recent VOTC releases, overall these are some of the best figures we have likely seen in the modern line.  While some figures can be improved upon (C-3PO with more articulation - knees at least, a "tricked out" R2-D2, etc.), some of the others look to be at their best.  I was just thinking about this today, has Hasbro really set the bar as high as it can be for some of these figures?  For example, are figures from the VOTC such as Han Solo, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, and Boba Fett as good as they can be?  Since Hasbro's current stance seems to be "no way" on re-releasing these figures later on, I wonder how they can release these characters in the lineups in the future (at least in these specific outfits/incarnations) without them seeming "dull" in comparison to these VOTC versions.  I mean, "New Hope" Han, Vader, Fett, Chewie...these are a few of Hasbro's favorite "main characters" to keep on the pegs.  While there are other routes they can take with some of these characters (new Endor and/or Stormtrooper Han for example), can these particular versions be improved upon?  Unless there is something added on, I don't see what would drive anyone to pick up a New Hope style Han Solo in the future, if it isn't this current Vintage Original Trilogy Collection version.  Anyways, just something I was thinking about, and curious as to some of your thoughts.

The Prequel Trilogy / Hyperspace Webcam
« on: July 29, 2004, 02:41 PM »
SPOILERS for those who are avoiding such things (I think this whole forum is labeled as such though)....  Anyways, here's a place to discuss the goings on on the webcam.  I suppose things will be a little slower for the most part now, since most of the actual filming is done.  However, there was some wookiees showing up on the cam yesterday (Chewbacca and Tarfful)  Not sure when they first started, but I know you can see them at around 14:58 (on July 28), and they are off and on there until the last shot of the day.  I don't know if there will be further like this or not.  You can also find out what happened when with the "What Did I Miss?" button on the webcam page.  Just thought I'd post in case anyone missed it.

Watto's Junk Yard / Collecting: Did You Intend to Go This Far?
« on: July 29, 2004, 11:40 AM »
When you started (or re-started) collecting, did you ever think it would go as far as it did?  Whether it is Star Wars, another toy line, or something totally different...did you ever think your collection would grow to what it is now?  Maybe some of you never did stop in the first place.  For me, I had quite a few vintage Star Wars toys as a kid...most of which I still have..but didn't actively collect anything Star Wars after that.  I didn't even jump in initially with the POTF2 re-release (although I did look at them from time to time).  For some reason I never just started up.  I remember when I first got back, it started with a "I'll just get....and that will be it".  For me, it was around the time of Episode I, and I worked at a retail store in college...and I picked up 6 figures:  Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Darth Maul, Yoda, C-3PO, and R2-D2.  I got the ones "from the OT", and then the other ones I knew were main characters.  I also picked up the commtech versions of Han and Luke, and said that would be it.  I just wanted to have those.  Well, and a Vader.  And a.....

Then...I ended up picking up more loose POTF2 figures via ebay, retail, or online.  Ever since then it has snowballed.  I wasn't a completist during the Episode 1 time, but did pick up quite a few.  Then came POTJ, and I decided to get every single one (I think I did miss one or two at the end though, like Jar Jar w/tongue).  Ever since then I have been selective in my purchases (for the most part), but do pick up most of the basic line.  I've also expanded into other areas (Unleashed, finishing out vintage line, glasses, Galactic Heroes, etc.).  I have also picked up some LOTR, Spidey, and Marvel figures along the way (along with some other miscellaneous figures), that I know I never would have even known about or gotten into if it wasn't for collecting Star Wars.  I guess, when you first started collecting in modern times, did you say "just this one, or that one", did you intend to be in it for the long haul?  Which figures did you want (who were your "just this")?  Did you even realize the scope of what was (or would be) released?  I am in no way unhappy with what I have purchased, I really enjoy my collection (and continue to), but looking at it, I never would have guessed it would have went this far (or that I'd have spent this much!).  What are your stories?  :)

Original Trilogy Collection / Comic-Con: Overall Impressions
« on: July 26, 2004, 01:13 PM »
So, after a weekend of toys, movie information, title announcements, giveaways, etc., what do you think of the future of Star Wars after what we have learned at Comic-Con?  Once again, I'd like to commend Matt, Jared, and the staff here at JD for great coverage of the event, and delving deeper into things that weren't covered at the Q and A.  What are your impressions?  Anything in particular stand out, or that you were disappointed with?

Hasbro Basic Figures
Well, unfortunately it looks like the OTC is officially done (for now) after the 39 figures.  Kind of disappointed there weren't anymore new figures going to be included in this line, but it has been a pretty good year all said.  The VOTC figures shown continue to look great, although there are perhaps a few shortcomings on our favorite droids.  Overall though, I think I'd say that the entire VOTC line looks great, from sculpting standpoints.  Disappointing to hear that they won't be repacked (at least by what Matt was told), and even if that isn't the entire truth, I don't think we'll be seeing anything any time soon.

Good to see a few new waves are coming next year, prior to Episode III.  The Cantina wave is especially welcome, although I'm one that would have liked to see Hem Dazon included as well.  The waves do seem to be filled with figures many people have been jonesin' for though, which is great.  The Cantina and Jedi Council packs kind of seem like a joke to me.  I want to the get whole council circle, but these sets are really seeming like ripoffs to me now at $20.  Blue Snaggy is cool, but we don't have any K-Marts in town, and the other figs don't make it worth it anyways most likely.

Unleashed
IG-88 looked nice, as well as the other previously announced figures (Bossk, Tusken, Aayla).  I've really been enjoying this line overall, and I hope it continues.  I've only been collecting the OT ones, but some of the others look nice too.  Too bad they take up too much space, or I'd probably get them all.

Galactic Heroes
This is another line I really enjoy (and also go OT only on, except maybe for that Yoda/Clone pack).  Glad to see a few more 2 packs announced, and I hope that this line continues in some fashion as well.  Just a neat little collectible, and great for your kids, nieces/nephews, or even just yourself :).

Miscellanous Thoughts
Some of the other lines represented looked very nice as well.  Gentle Giant obviously does wonderful work, and the new collectibles coming from Sideshow and Master Replicas look spiffy as well.  If I had the budget for these areas, I'd be all over it.  The Bust-Ups (at their lower price point) are awfully tempting.

The Episode III title...I like it.  Maybe not a huge surprise, as this has been one talked about for quite some time it seems, but I like it because it seems to fit in more with the titles of the OT movies.  Mirrors ROTJ nicely as well.

The packaging (well, this has its own thread), but it is something like we've never seen before.  I don't know what to think of it for sure, but it does seem to be a little more visually interesting than the POTF2, POTJ, and Saga incarnations.  I also like the inclusion of the character pic on the bubble, stands out nice and will make figures easy to find on the pegs.  I also really like the Vader helmet (and silhouette), as well as the lava.

Kind of disappointed with the Hasbro reps (well, at least one the way it sounds) treatment of Matt when he asked them a few questions.  I don't really care for the collecting community as a whole being looked down upon, especially when we readily support their line for a number of years.  I think we all know (and they do, deep down), that without us, they wouldn't even be in the stores anymore.  I do hope that kids like and buy Star Wars, and lots of it, because I hope that another generation can experience the magic of this great Saga...but don't disregard us just because we're adults.  Disappointing news about items such as the VOTC availability as well.  Otherwise, it was a nice show, good to hear some new Episode III news, see a few figures for the first time (VOTC Wave 3, 2005 figures) and get a glimpse of what is to come.  Overall, what are your impressions of the show, what we've seen, and what is yet to come?

Just realized, maybe this doesn't fit in the OTC thread, if not, feel free to move it and/or delete it.  Sorry :).

Collector's Tips / Removing Bubbles from the Cardbacks?
« on: July 20, 2004, 11:15 AM »
I collect the majority of my figures loose, but I usually use a knife to cut off the bubble, and then keep the cardbacks.  I recently purged quite a few of those, but plan to keep the OTC and VOTC cardbacks for good.  I was wondering if there was a better way to remove the bubble, without damaging the card, but still being able to get all of the plastic off.  I usually carefully cut them off, which just leaves the little plastic "ring" around the figure, but with these OTC cards, it would be nice to have them removed cleanly.  Can it be done?

I'm not usually a 12" collector, but thought I would post this for anyone interested.  I just received the latest issue of Star Wars Insider in the mail today (#77, the new "look" one), and they have confirmation (and a pic) in there of a KBToys exclusive 12" Chewbacca.  It doesn't look too bad from the pic they show, I think I might actually have to pick it up if I can find it too.  If you have the insider, check the Hasbro toys section.

Original Trilogy Collection / VOTC/OTC Purchases
« on: July 12, 2004, 02:11 PM »
Well, since it sounds like the OTC (and VOTC) are starting to show up around the country (even here in Nebraska!), I thought it would be nice to see what everyone is finding, buying, or passing on.  What do you have, what do you have left to get this year?  With the massive repacks, I know many will be having a Star Wars figure break here for awhile.

Here's what I've gotten so far:

Vintage Original Trilogy Collection
Han Solo (Amazon.com)

Original Trilogy Collection
Luke Skywalker - Dagobah (Wal-Mart)
Yoda - Dagobah (Wal-Mart)
Obi-Wan Kenobi Spirit - Dagobah (Wal-Mart)
R2-D2 - Dagobah (Wal-Mart)
Han Solo repack (Wal-Mart)

I've also seen a few more OTC repacks, but passed on them.  For now, I'm looking ahead to the rest of the VOTC line (maybe 2 of each, we'll see), the OTC Bespin wave, and repacks such as Bespin Luke, Gamorrean Guard, General Lando, Slave Leia, and possibly Bib Fortuna or the Jawas (their repaint looks pretty good).
