Other Toy Lines / Star Trek
« on: July 23, 2003, 03:25 PM »
I collected Playmates Toys' Trek line from the beginning, pre-Modern Star Wars, of course. It was fun while it lasted, but in the end it became more frustrating than satisfying. Impossible to get exclusives, arbitrary scale changes, short-packing, you name it; this line had it. I gave up about a year before the line's demise.

Art Asylum's line doesn't really do anything for me. They look terrific, but there's VERY little selection and the 7" scale doesn't allow for viable vehicles or playsets. Had this been a 3 3/4" line, I'd have been all over it. The Minimates are kinda cool, but unfortunately there's very little retail support for Trek in general so the entire line is waning.

That said, I have picked up a few items on clearance at Target. The Enterprise Deluxe figures feature bridge components that will help make a really cool Batcave and/or Birds of Prey Clocktower for my DC Direct figures. The scale is a little off, but not too bad. And the Borg: Assimilation figures are currently available for under $5 at Target and will look stunning trapped between my Alien Queen and Predator figures.

Anyone else into Trek?

It struck me that the "Saga" line hasn't really been replaced, merely upgraded. The packaging might sport different graphics, but it's still a unified "Saga" line, if not in name (although it's never said "Saga" on the branding).

I'm thinking the Clone Wars forum should be merged into the existing Saga forum. After all, the POTF2 line had figures from the OT as well as "Expanded Universe." Why should Clone Wars get special treatment?

The Prequel Trilogy / The Official Cast Thread
« on: June 20, 2003, 11:16 AM »
I'm starting this thread to announce the latest cast additions to Episode III not only to trim the number of "New Cast Member!" threads but to keep the spoilers in the body of the thread rather than the title where it's visible to the rest of the forum.

With that, I present Mon Mothma:

Played by Genevieve O'Reilly, not Natalie Portman as some have speculated.

The Prequel Trilogy / Padme as stormtrooper!!!
« on: June 19, 2003, 11:06 AM »
Here's an image taken at Gentle Giant Studios of Natalie Portman donning a stormtrooper helmet for Episode III during a scene when she escapes to Alderaan:

Clearly this is some sort of pre-production work for a digital stunt double, but isn't it exciting that Luke's mom dressed as a stormie long before he did? Gotta love that recurring theme thing George insists on. I'm so giddy with anticipation!

"Aren't you ridiculously short for a stormtrooper?" ;D

According to a Hasbro ad on the back page of ToyFare #72, "Small is big again." Well, duh. Block figures, HeroClix, Speedeez, even Mattel is pumping out its own line of micro-scaled vehicles.

As of July 2003, Micro Machines are "back on the streets," so say your prayers. This could mean the micro market isn't so "dead" after all.

Watto's Junk Yard / Segway 1, Bush 0

Talk about a stumbling presidency. Gotta admire his tenacity, though. I'm sure he'll have that Segway tamed in no time. (Or "disarmed.")

Watto's Junk Yard / Simple pleasures
« on: June 10, 2003, 11:28 AM »
Consider this the anti-pet peeve thread... er, thread.

Life's just full of simple pleasures and dang it all, let's not take 'em for granted. Here are some of mine:

- Opening toys: Any toy, not just "collectibles." Maybe it's the smell (yes, I huff). And as much as I loathe twist ties, I'm getting a giddy satisfaction from braiding them into one giant cable. (When life gives you lemons...)

- Bag fries: I go to McDonald's or Wendy's, order a chicken combo meal with a Coke™, and just when I think I'm done eating, there are always a few fries left at the bottom of the bag. Manna from Heaven.

- Hugs: Unsolicited, unconditional, unexpected hugs. My two-year-old is getting pretty good at it, but her 10-year-old brother's got it down pat. Family hugs are cool, too, when the four of us gather in a small circle in one big embrace and squeeze 'til our sternums pop. Need a hug?  ;)

Your turn.  ;D

Watto's Junk Yard / Behold: The Language Police
« on: June 4, 2003, 11:14 AM »
I hate the politically correct. Here's an article on CNN describing just how far it's gotten:

Language police bar 'old,' 'blind'

This is ridiculous. Textbook publishers "don't want controversy and they don't want people screaming," so they're dumbing down schoolbooks to "make the language as inoffensive as possible."

Oh my God, where have all the people with BALLS gone? Are there really that many litigious leftist liberals out there?

I can't walk my children through a mall without hearing teenagers and adults casually dropping the F-bomb in between every other word as if it's perfectly acceptable to curse like a sailor in any context. Social etiquette has gotten that bad. But when it comes to the written word, we cringe at the thought of labelling an old man "old" or a blind man "blind?" Give me a break.

When are we going to rebel against these uptight pansies? Is the casual use of vulgarity a direct response, a venting of what's left before they take that away, too? How are we supposed to communicate with each other at all once the politically correct are done censoring language, removing all the pointy nouns with sharp adjectives so no one ever ever ever gets their feelings hurt, deservedly or not?

Site Feedback, Suggestions, and Help / Toy Image Archive
« on: June 2, 2003, 02:08 PM »
If JediDefender is serious about becoming a force to be reckoned with in the online collecting community, it needs a decent Toy Image Archive.

I know that starting one is a serious undertaking and can be a tedious, thankless job, but once it's up to date, the maintenance should be relatively trouble free. I see Chris currently has a portion of the JD site dedicated to an archive, although it's still "under construction."

I'm a Photoshop nut and can make the images look pretty. But someone else would have to provide the photography. Is there one among us who has the resources and initiative to spearhead such an endeavor?

Clone Wars '03-'05 / I want a new TF Droid Starfighter!
« on: June 2, 2003, 01:00 PM »
The Clone Wars line is the perfect opportunity for Hasbro to offer a newly resculpted Trade Federation Droid Starfighter.

The first thing designers should do is take a look at Galoob's superior Action Fleet toy from their Episode I line and borrow a couple tricks. I want a transforming version that looks cool and has decent play value. Extra points if the thing can actually walk!

If anything it's a great excuse to resurrect the "dead" Deluxe line. Anyone else interested?

Watto's Junk Yard / Fighting the urge to scalp.
« on: May 30, 2003, 03:21 PM »
So I'm on my afternoon toy run when I come across the elusive Marvel Legends Doctor Doom Doombot variant. I'm no Marvel Legends fan. I think the best thing about the entire line are the bases rather than the figures. The only two I own are Iron Man and the Thing, mostly because the articulation is pretty well hidden on Stark's armor and Ben Grimm is just one big mother...

Anyway, I had wanted to get a Doom figure, but couldn't get past his crooked European teeth. The head sculpt just looked goofy, but I thought, "I just won't display him without his mask on." Then I noticed the Doombot variant right behind him. Nice, better than Vic's mug, that's for sure. So I put the Vic Doom down and kept the Doombot figure instead since this one will look good with OR without the mask.

I walk toward checkout thinking, "Gee, I wish the Iron Man gold variant was this easy to get." Then it hits me. I can't help but wonder how much this thing is going for on eBay. So instead of checking the auctions, I come here for support.

How often have you drifted toward the "dark" side? Fess up now.

Watto's Junk Yard / Call the bank, Trekkies.
« on: May 29, 2003, 04:48 PM »
You're gonna need a substantial loan for this beauty.

As much as I enjoy Star Trek in its many forms, I can't say I'd want to live in it. I'd feel like I was living in a futuristic hospital or something.

Now a Star Wars apartment, that'd be entirely different. Each room could have a different environmental feel. The kitchen would be like the Lars' homestead. The bathroom would be modelled after Vader's meditation chamber of course. The garage would look like the inside of a Jawa sandcrawler. Maybe the living room would be designed after the Naboo Palace.

And the home theatre... ooooohhh, the home theatre. The possibilities.

Anyway, place your bids here. At $2 million it's a steal. You may have to relocate, but if this place includes a working transporter, the move should be a snap!

Watto's Junk Yard / Other boards
« on: May 28, 2003, 01:50 PM »
I was wondering if there were any other boards members here go to in their dubious free time.

For Star Wars chat, I stick to JediDefender and GH.com's BHC. Occasionally I'll visit the Official Site's forum, but only to bump OCB's Ice Cream Maker Guy petition thread (which is officially sanctioned; congratulations Scott!).

As a DC Comics fan, I'm a regular at the DC Direct board. Oddly enough, it's also a great plce to talk about other 6" figures, especially Marvel Legends.

Every once in a while I'll go off on the crappy business tactics Art Asylum practices on their board. (I like their Minimates but wish they'd be in the same scale with each other!) It's definitely an R-rated forum, language wise. :o

Aside from CurlTalk and the Militant Breastfeeding Cult, that's pretty much it for me. How 'bout you?

Saga '02-'04 / Figures with Micro Machines
« on: May 21, 2003, 12:07 PM »
Two great tastes that go great together!

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I collected both Hasbro's 3 3/4" line and Galoob's MicroMachines. Given the "soft market" for micro scale toys (although Playmates is launching Speedeez and Mattel has just introduced its own new line of micro Hot Wheels), I was thinking of a way I could get my figures and micros in the same package.

I miss Micro Machines, and I love that Hasbro has put a new emphasis on decent pack-ins with their figures. I was thinking Hasbro could start offering MicroMachine vehicles as pack-ins with 3 3/4" scale figures, sort of like the Darth Maul with Sith Infiltrator in the Episode I line.

I think this would be a natural for figures that are tough to accessorize. For instance, Lama Su was a cool character (the figure could have been taller), but how much cooler would it have been to include one of those flying whale beasties instead of any empty jar o' clone? Same with Zam Wesell, who easily should have included her micro Speeder.

The upcoming rumored ANH Luke and Vader repacks could come with a micro Landspeeder and TIE fighter respectively. Battledroids could come with micro scale versions of Hailfire Droids and Spider Droids while Clone Troopers could come with Republic Gunships and AT-TEs.

Anyone else wild about this idea?

Watto's Junk Yard / Lucasfilm Animation
« on: May 13, 2003, 11:54 AM »
According to the LA Times, Lucas has FINALLY started a seperate animation division to compete with Pixar (Toy Story), Pacific Data (Shrek), and Blue Sky (Ice Age). While the studio is still young, it hasn't named a project yet. However, I think the Frankenstein project was a great idea. And I can't help thinking something Star Wars related, for theatre OR television, would be a natural.

Still, I'd love to see LFA do Flash Gordon. It would be great to see a CG animated feature with a 40's sci-fi retro look.

What projects do you think this new studio should consider?
