Title: 2022 Droid Factory - Mystery Crate - Blind Buy Droids
Post by: Rob on December 27, 2021, 01:08 AM
Photos on Yak Face’s IG.  They’ve shown five so far…

Yay.

I like these, but then the question is how the hell will anyone be able to get them?  It seems overly optimistic to think that they might turn up at Target like the droids that were released last year.

There are six confirmed so far, and they are all designs that are visible in the Droid Depot shop at Galaxy's Edge. those six droids are:

C1-4B - a blue & white version of Chopper with some red highlights
G4-S8 - a white & green R4 droid
B5-SL - a white & blue BB unit, looks to be the same sculpt as BB-8
JB-9 - a yellow and gray BB unit, looks to be the same sculpt as the First Order BB-9E
CH-83 - a white & yellow BB unit, also looks to be the same sculpt as BB-8
S3-R9 - a gray R2 unit

There is a lot of similarity in these offerings to the wind-up offerings that are also available from the Droid Depot, so there is potentially a seventh droid, which is:

M5-K7 - a white & yellow w/silver & yellow dome R2 unit

There are a total of 10 droids that can be seen throughout the shop, in addition to those seven, there are also two more BB designs (one maroon and another that's a brownish color) and another R4 design that is mostly white with striping/color highlights on the dome and legs.

Hopefully for sanity's sake there are only six blind-boxed figures though.

They are $14.99 each, which is $2 more than the individually carded figures. Someone really needs to tell Disney, that the cost for blind-bagged/boxed should be LOWER, not higher than being able to buy an item that you actually know what it is.  >:(

The conspiracy theorist in me says that can only mean one thing...individually carded droid prices are going up significantly.

$14.99 for blind buy droids is as insane as $27 for Boba Fett with a pair of empty stormtrooper helmets.

We’re screwed.

Exactly - but unfortunately, nothing individually carded will come close to the outstanding 4-LOM they offered a year ago and that was only $12.99.

New paint applications on existing molds that have been around for five years or longer (this coming April will mark the 5th anniversary of SWCO in 2017 where they debuted the build-a-droid BB-8 & Chopper) - should mean that the cost of the figures stays consistent, not goes up.

The $2 mark-up on these is for the plastic "crates" with bases that can be connected to each other for a multi-droid display, I could have completely done w/o that "feature".

Four of the 6 will likely be distinguishable by weight. The two BB-8-type droids will be a toss-up. Who will be the first to bring in a small digital scale?  :)

I like the droids but I'll take three repaint clones with 1:1 odds over six droids with 1:6 odds.

There are actually three BB units - and those would be the heavier ones due to the weighted ball that gives the Disney BB units the weeble-wobble type behavior.

These are making their way onto the secondary market a bit more.  It would be nice if they would turn up on the Shop Disney app at retail price.

Yeah, for like $300 to $350 for a set of 6 as of a couple of days ago... total nonsense.

I scored two of them this morning for $60.  Not ideal, but I’m not optimistic about Disney offering these online.

Friend is sending me 4… I’ll be missing the two that appear to be the more difficult to find but I think he’ll get me covered.  Love the boxes haha.  I’m easily entertained by background boxes I guess.

Has anyone figured out how to identify which box has which droid, or is totally random and you're at the mercy of luck and buying a bunch of extras?

Of the 5 I’ve gotten on eBay, 4 were already open.  The 5th was sealed.  It’s truly a blind box situation.

Well, I got my package of these from my Disney connection today.  He was able to snag 8 of them, so I was hoping for at least 4 different ones.  Out of the eight, I only nabbed 3 different versions. Kind of a bummer, but these are still really cool.  Anyone looking to trade doubles on these?  Here's what I have:

2x B5-SL (Blue BB)
2x C1-4B (Chopper)
4x S3-R9 (Grey Astromech)

Looking for:

CH-83 (Yellow BB)
G4-S8 (Green Astromech)
JB-9 (Yellow BB)

I've got all of these except for C1-4B.  From what I can tell it seems to be the most scarce of the bunch, at least on eBay.  As for the droids I have?  They're nice - the paint deco on S3-R9 and JB-9 are fantastic!  But with the BB droids there is all of one point of articulation and the weeble-wobbling action feature.  I don't know that collectors are getting tremendous value here, aside from the whole Disney playing on the whole blind box phenomenon that's hot in the toy business right now.

Do you have any extras to trade?  I'm hoping to score some more of these, but sounds like they're currently out of stock.

$15 is a little steep for these droids, I'll admit.  The droid itself should probably be more like $6-7 with today's prices.  I'm willing to bump that up to $10 with the crate it comes in - those are almost as appealing as the droid for me.  Add in that the bases connect and they double as a figure stand and have a sticker - I'll bite for a few more bucks.  So if these were $12ish at retail, I'd expect to pay the Disney Park markup of $15 for them.  I think the build-a-droid figures were $13 or 2 for $20, so not too far off the mark from those either.

For me, $90 retail or a little further over $100 to get a set of 6 with crates is tolerable.  If these were a set of 12 and I was looking at $200 just for 12 random crates that could contain doubles, then I'm probably out, but I'm still in the game for now.

At this point I'd happily pay $15 each.  Seems like the only way to get them if you can't get to the park is to pay $30 to $45 each.

I'm also concerned that this is going to be regular occurrence.  New waves every 6 or 12 months...

I have a contact that buys Disney stuff and resells for a 20% mark up.  So my droids came to about $21 each with shipping (I bought 8 of them).  A bit more steep than the $15 tag, but a lot cheaper than Ebay or flying to the park myself.  I just hope they're in ample supply so I can get the full set.  I do think we'll see more - I thought I saw a post somewhere about another wave of them coming out in little sandcrawler crates.

Disney did a Sandcrawler blind-box series of mini-droids (https://www.fanthatracks.com/news/collecting/disney-announce-star-wars-mini-droid-blind-packs/) a couple years back.  They were way smaller than 3.75" scale, so I skipped them.  I guess I could see them recycling the Sandcrawler idea again if they do go back to this well.

Oh yeah, at that small a mark up I'd do it and be done as well.

Are these available at any Disney stores in Orlando that don't require theme park tickets?  I'll be near Orlando in February, but am not going to Disney...

Sorry, no extras at this time.  Of the five that I've purchased only one came truly blind boxed.  And thankfully that was one of the two that I did not yet have.  Still trying to track down the C1 droid now.

Are they sold at the Galactic Outpost in Disney Springs?  Or just limited to Galaxy's Edge stores?  I'll try to find out.

I saw reports of them being sold at the Emporium Shop in the Magic Kingdom park.  That's the shop that's close to the entrance of the Magic Kingdom that everyone winds up stopping at on their way out of the park.  Gotta love how they planned that!

There are actually TWO Star Wars themed shops at Disney Springs - the Galactic Outpost and the Star Wars Trading Post.  I liked the Star Wars Trading Post a bit more when I was there, but that was in late 2017, and you could still do the Build-A-Droid thing there.  It doesn't seem like a terribly Covid friendly thing to do now.  But I also remember seeing the big Disney Sandcrawler there, too.

That's enough that I've started buying them on eBay... I don't want to get caught flat footed and so far I've been able to find 3 4 of them for $24.99 each.

I can't even find an auction for the Chopper style one or the mostly yellow BB droid though.

I found some but they are crazy expensive.  The $25ish auctions might not be a bad move as I was paying about $21 for them blind.

I found a couple of open C1 droids, but the sellers are asking over $80 for them.  But how many blind crates can you buy before you throw up your hands in frustration?  I found one seller with over 10 in stock at $30 shipped.  But it feels like a complete gamble.

Yeah, some Chopper auctions and Yellow BB unit auctions are up now... $85 and $95 for the Chopper style one, and $150 for the yellow BB unit.

**** everything about this.

Yeah, that's kind of where I am with these.  I would love to add the three astromech droids to my collection, but I don't love the idea of spending $135-$150 on three 3.75" droids and plastic crates.

Between the prices on these and missing out on the Rainbow Pride Astromech, these Disney droids aren't fun anymore. :(

Agreed.  It's one thing to do a blind-buy thing.  But short packing two of them and keeping them from being available online isn't right.

I’m missing the one BB and chopper because the CHP is of course insane to find.  I got four so I’m thankful but this is annoying.  No guarantee they’re never coming back and no guarantee they’re not so, as Anakin weirdly said, I say patience.  It’s probably best way to deal with it.

Correct - all six of these mystery pack droids are based on droid designs that are visible in the Droid Depot shop @ Disney SWGE.  It wouldn't surprise me though if Disney tried to sneak some of these droid designs into D+ shows just because they can.

Well you guys can thank me later when 2 million of these end up in the clearance bin.

I went ahead and bought the rare two for $70 each because I didn't want to end up paying twice as much later if they don't show up in bigger numbers.

I'm not happy about it, it's absurd, but it's done.

I'm going to call shenanigans on that.  I have four of them and they all look like the one on the right.  I've also browsed through dozens of images of these and have never seen a red dot one.  Looks to me like the one on the left is actually R2-BHD from the 2016 Droid Depot 4-pack (https://www.amazon.ca/Awakens-Disney-Authentic-Original-Exclusive/dp/B00B1MQHJE).  The dotted line just under the dome is a dead giveaway.

Managed to get the two common astro droids from the same seller for about $25 shipped each.  After searching for these at all possible locations when I was at DW a couple of weeks ago and coming up empty, I figured that's not too bad of a price.

That Chopper droid is a bitch to find on ebay though.  I should be happy with just having the OG Chopper and not worrying about any redecos that may come along.  Not sure I'm there yet, but it may be soon.

I don't give a **** about the BB droids.

Got another batch of six of these from my Disney connection:

2x B5-SL (Blue BB)
2x S3-R9 (Grey Astromech)
1x CH-83 (White BB)
1x G4-S8 (Green Astromech)

Delighted to get two more I needed, especially the CH-83.  I also just ordered the JB-9 off Ebay to finish off the set, though I cringed a little at $26 shipped.

Have these for sale if anyone is looking or would trade B5s or S3s for G4s or JBs if anyone needs a swap.

4x S3-R9 (Grey Astromech) $21
2x B5-SL (Blue BB) $21
1x C1-4B (Chopper) $70

*Pending*

I managed to pick up the four less expensive of the six, but am not willing to drop $80 a droid for the last two.

Anybody still trying to put together a set of these?  I was hoping the price would drop and the parks would restock with an assortment heavier on the rarer droids, but it seems like the eBay auctions are getting thinner.  I wonder if the parks aren't restocking these or if the interest is dying out.

Disneyland had these over the weekend but now at $16.99. Of the 7 crates I picked up, 6 contained bb droids. As much as I wanted to grab a few more, I couldn't stomach the thought of getting more bb.

One of them was the harder-to-get ch-83.

Glad these are coming back.  I got most, but not all as the price was too high.  Hopefully another shipment or two of these will bring the prices down.

Same ones as before right?  Not a new wave?

I wish these would be easier to get.  I'd be interested in getting some.  Of course, the one I really want is the rare one.  Go figure.

I'm hopeful this refresh wave has a different assortment where the previous "rares" are now the common ones.

Wish in one hand, **** in the other.  See which one fills up first.   ;)

Having a complete set of these seemed like something I was gonna just brush off but my buddy got me the Chopper while he was down yonder and my other buddy wound up with an extra of the rare BB… a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Anybody in the LA area know if these are still at Disneyland and if there is a store next to (but outside) the park where these can still be acquired?  I'm going to be there in a few weeks and was going to try and stop by and get a few more of these if the second batch was still available.

I was there around Halloween and saw them only at the droid factory shop. They were in 2 sections. None at the other shops inside or the one outside the park.

(Unfortunately none of the little droid factory assembly anywhere back then.)

Are there any shops outside the park worth stopping at when I'm there, or is all the good stuff in the park?

The Mystery Crates are turning up in Disney clearance outlets for $7.99 each.  I'm still hoping to get a C1-4B - it's the only one I'm missing.

Me too, and a CH-83.  I'll have to start checking eBay and see if the prices of these are finally dropping.
