Title: Walmart Black Series 3.75" AT-ST Walker w/Driver
Post by: Jeff on January 2, 2017, 11:37 PM
Huh.  Looks like Walmart is expanding their Black Series 3.75" line a bit:

Black Series 3.75" AT-ST Walker w/Driver (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2017/01/02/tbs-at-st-walker-with-driver-found-at-walmart/) found in Houston, TX.

Sounds like it's about $60 for this version.  Wonder if they bothered to fix the joints this time around...
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" AT-ST Walker w/Driver
Post by: Jesse James on January 2, 2017, 11:55 PM
First time around, joints snapped...  plastic was too weak.

Second time around, plastic was too flexible, joints themselves too loose to hold up the bulbous noggin of an AT-ST.

Third time's the charm?

Though IIRC, the Hoth version in the ultimate battlepack stands better....  I think.

Regardless though, I find this to be one of the coolest vehicles Hasbro cranked out.  If it's too weak, I'll redo the "fix" tutorial I had, but simply put, it's an external lock washer wedged in the "hip" joint for sturdiness.

I went ape**** on the K-Mart walker during their clearance glut...  I went ape**** on the Wal-Mart one too, for that matter.  This?  At $60, I'll bide my time I think.  I have plenty.  But if it's nicely fixed to "perfection" I'd buy one I think.  It was cool seeing it tear up the streets of Jedha.

Looks like a repack of one of the Kmart Exclusive Endor AT-ST Crew

Well, this is certainly a surprise, albeit kind of welcome.  This is probably one of the best vehicles that Hasbro has released in the past 10 years.  I don't know if anyone was really expecting this.  But with the AT-ST showing up in ROGUE ONE I guess that might have been reason enough for Hasbro to do so.  And since Hasbro has held off on making the tank from Jedha, I guess this takes its place.

The $60 price tag sucks.  But then the price on ALL vehicles seem to have been significantly inflated since Disney took over the SW property.  If this were a Target offering I'd wait until it went on clearance.

This is a pass for me unless the Driver is new.  I already have a dozen or so AT-STs from previous releases, so can't see shelling out $60 for another unless there's some significant improvements to be had.  Cool that they are releasing more Black Series stuff though.

The only "correctly" scaled AT-ST I ever got was the Legacy Collection one. Is that different paint apps wise?

So this is what, the 5th release of this version of the AT-ST?  The previous ones that come to mind are:

-LEGACY COLLECTION (Red phase) - WalMart exclusive
-SOTDS Attack On Hoth multipack - Target exclusive
-VINTAGE COLLECTION - K-Mart exclusive
-BLACK SERIES - Battle on Endor - TRU exclusive

I'm pretty sure I picked up all of these except for the Black Series one.  I think the paint apps have varied on some.  I think RS has some comparison shots between the first couple.

Walmart TLC / Target Attack on Hoth / Kmart Vintage Collection

I'd say the new Walmart one matched more closely to the first (TLC) release than the others, although I don't have the TRU version to compare against.

This is a very welcome surprise for me! Made sense since it was in the movie.

Though, would love to also have a proper large wing TIE fighter with the new cockpit without the pink windows.  ::)

I haven't touched my original Wal-Mart ones in eons...  Kind of afraid to.  Not much to fix them if they pop.  I should get one out that is broke and start looking through hardware to find a fix for it.

I'm very curious if anyone knows if this new one has sturdy joints that don't break over time/stress?  It's the motivator for me owning one.  Otherwise there isn't much about it that looks like it's specific to Jedha, or even all that different from the last Wal-Mart one to be honest.  And I kind of prefer the K-Mart Endor ones even, once they're fixed.  The grey seems more right and the deco just looks better to my eye.

This is definitely appreciated...  A Big Wing TIE would be nice too though...  grey instead of blue-grey would be neat since I think I have quite a few of the latter.

Wow!  Interesting development with the re-release of one of Hasbro's best vehicles...  Glad to see it, though, as it could bode well for future releases.  Hasbro must see there is still popularity with the 3.75" Black Series line to expand to doing vehicles...  I have a couple of the original Walmart AT-STs, one still sealed in its box and the other where the legs cracked apart.  I also have the Kmart one, but eventually glued the legs in place as the rubbery plastic lost its strength...  That one is my display piece.

Excellent comparison shot, Jayson!  I never opened my TVC AT-ST, but the deco on that one looks to be one of the best of the bunch.

But now that I know I have at least 3 AT-ST's?  I don't know about buying a 4th.

Hey Jayson, just looking through the initial Yakface post on this (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2017/01/02/tbs-at-st-walker-with-driver-found-at-walmart/#more-31860).  Can you verify that SKU number?  I'm pretty sure most SKU numbers are 8 digits, but the one you posted is 9 digits.

Saw it this weekend and while I appreciate the effort, I have literally a dozen or more of these things and just don't know if I want another.  I have a few originals, ton of Kmart ones which can be fixed and that UBP white one.  I may pick it up I dunno.  $60 is kind of a lot tho for something I have a lot of, and the paint job looked to me almost exactly like the Legacy one up close.  *shrugs*

I'd have much preferred a Legacy snowspeeder repaint with a Wedge pack-in. :)

I came across the new AT-ST at a local Walmart today - the first time I've seen one in person.  The packaging is attractive and its great to see a proper 3.75" vehicle back on the shelves withou the nerf cannons ;)  However, the new AT-ST looks almost identical to the Legacy Collection version.  I have a TLC version MIB plus another loose as well as the K-Mart one.  No need to get this one I felt...

I mentioned this in my previous post, but now that the movie is available at home, and that I've watched the last half hour about a dozen times already, I think it's a shame that there are no 3.75" TIE fighters and X-wings out with this this movie. Seriously, who wouldn't want a Blue leader X-wing with General Merrick?

I have been thinking up updating my Endor shelf to make it look more like the battle.  I want to have Chewbacca commandeering one AT-ST while the other is going after the Rebels.  This kind of made it a must have for me.

I purchased the second one as a gift for my oldest because he loves everything walker (AT-AT, AT-ST, AT-DP, etc.)

Once you fix the Kmart ones ability to stand I think it's the best deco personally.  The wm one is ok but a tad generic in deco, which is good and bad depending what you want I guess.  The Kmart one was so abundant and so cheap I just went nuts at the time.  Can say the same about all their exclusives really save for 6" not really on my radar.

I appreciate that Guys, and the forwarding of that.  Essentially it's jamming an external lock washer into the space of the weak joint.  Creates tension necessary to stand without altering the toy.

Appreciate the thought guys.

Jesse's Fix instructions:

Ironically right after I took some quick new pics, I found all the oldies. :P

Anyway, you get the new.  I need to rewrite the old article and add to it I suppose.  Onto the details...

First, you need a few tools...  A SMALL philips head screwdriver, and pin-type tool that's thin enough to fit a hole smaller than your screwdriver's diameter but firm enough to push on without bending.  I used a small dental pick tool I have around for customizing.  An awl or even a finishing nail would work.

Next, this is the pose I go with on my AT-ST's because this is actually film-accurate, gives the vehicle the right height, etc.  Some delicacy is involved but mine hold their pose even with 2 troopers inside, or even Chewie and the Ewoks.

This closer side-shot helps show how the hip and upper leg joints line-up incase you're curious how mine are standing.

Also, you need TWO 5/16 Internal Lock Washers...  Pictured here.  These fit the best I've found, and create some extra pressure in the joint we're trying to tighten up.  I bought a set of lock wasters from Harbor Freight for like $2 or $3 in a big assortment, but you could get 2 individuals at Lowes or whatever.  Cheap stuff.

This is the joint we're working on...  It's the lower leg section's highest joint, where it connects to the mid-leg section.

This is the screw to remove...  The screw goes into a pin, which fits very specifically into the leg.  We'll talk about the pin's removal and replacement in a second as it is the only trickier part, or rather it can be.

Once the screw's out, take the "pick" tool (nail, whatever) and it must fit inside that screw hole.  You don't want something too thick because you don't want to widen that hole or you'll strip it or at the very least make it not fit the screw that just came out as well.

You push the tool into that hole so it pushes the pin out the other side...  Sometimes the pins come easy, sometimes not so easy.  When it's out, the lower leg will slide right out of the mid-leg portion so be careful not to drop it and lose parts.

Note the pin coming out of the opposite side.

Here, you see it dismantled...  notice that on the inside of the lower let piece, there is a specifically cut "disc" of sorts.  Leave it in, just like it is.  The pin has to line up on that disc exactly.  It's not a huge issue if it falls out, you'll probably easily figure out how it goes back in when lining up the leg parts, however it's the one area that might confuse you if the parts fall apart I think.  You can see in the picture just how they go, and how the leg pieces were posed when I took it apart as well, as a guide incase you need it.

Now, in this final picture you see me lining the washer up with the hole...  It's a snug fit (that's the point) and when you slide the lower leg back into the middle leg portion, the washer has to fit in the slight gap between them.  It strengthens this joint, which is a joint I never really use much anyway, with a little tension.

I can, however, still move the joint I've noticed, with no issues...  It's really not a big deal.  I'm sure I could probably make more permanent fixes but I just haven't.

Once the washer is in, put the pin back in, lined up exactly how it needs to, to fit into the lower-leg's little disc piece, and then just reattach the screw, and it's good to go.

That said, other people have mentioned issues with the "hips", if you will.  this is the little arm that connects the main body portion to the legs...  That, I have another fix for, if you have problems with this joint.  It's weaker plastic there for sure.

If you guys are having any issues hit me up, and I'll try to help out as best I can.

I'd be lying if I said this thing still isn't capable of falling forward easily if it's bumped.  Honestly I think some weights in the feet would do it wonders.  It's just a top-heavy vehicle.  Not a very practical design by the Empire. :P  Mine are standing pretty well though, and I hope to fix the "hip" issue soon.

The AT-TE had a similar issue, and fix, where you could put PVC pipe into a hole to create better tension on the joint within the leg.  The AT-ST is the same basic issue at the hip, though I don't find that problem to come up too often.  It could be fixed with small styrene rods though, or small metal all-thread or something.

If you have hip issues with them let me know and I'll try strengthening one of mine and snap some pics of what I did.

Sorry to be chatty guys, just wanted to be thorough for you!

Swap out internal lock washer with an external.  It basically looks like a cog or gear.  I find that it grips better.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lock-Washer-External-Tooth-410-SS-Plain-Fits-4-Bolts-OD-0.260-In.-PK100/41034180?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=1122&adid=22222222228028590677&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=61289881929&wl4=aud-273067695102:pla-96915328329&wl5=1025012&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=101593696&wl11=online&wl12=41034180&wl13=&veh=sem

Basically this but the same or similar size mentioned in the article.  The internal one worked in too tho but I like the external ones better I think.

Yes, except the feet. Way to "muddy". Made it look more like it had been on Dagobah than Endor.

But has anyone actually picked one up? I'm still interested in seeing if they fixed the leg issues.
I've had the one I got 3 weeks ago standing since then and haven't had any problems with the legs.

Actually if you look at the models the atsts feet are pretty caked in mud and foliage.  I'm not gonna say Hasbros work was impeccable there but the feet of the walkers are actualky muddy.  The WM walkers, both eras, just look dusty or like likght surface rust.

I have the Hoth walker which isn't accurate but the deco is kinda nice for the setting...  just the walker isn't correct is all.

Never saw the Endor one from the multi pack.

Yeah I think that was my rationale on that too...  The Hoth one's pretty darn nice for what it is.

Jim if you have any issues with the above instructions and pictures, LMK...  It's easy to do, for anyone looking to fix theirs.

The original WM ones, they break under stress over time I've found.  Never did a fix on one, though I have quite a few I got on clearance.  I figure someday I'll work something out for them too but it's going to be involved.  It's the kind of thing someone into 3D design could put together and sell rather easily I think.  Most of the pieces that were breaking under stress were like nylon or something and all internal parts.

My usual concern... I'm tempted at that price, but I'm trying to figure out if it would be redundant to me.  I re-read this thread and I'm wondering if anyone has comparison photos of this one with the TLC version?   I.E., is it any different really than the one I already have in this photo:

Also, what's the verdict on the driver, is he a repack?
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" AT-ST Walker w/Driver
Post by: Jesse James on November 20, 2017, 09:39 PM
The TLC one not terribly as far as deco goes.  The difference is that this one is more sturdy than that one, which is known to have issues where the joints become brittle and break over time.

I got a few of the new one on clearance for $15, which I had on my radar.  I had to drive cross country to EBF but got them super cheap and I'm always fairly happy to add AT-ST's to my arsenal.  The deco is bland and non-specific, and pretty much just like the Legacy walker.  The best deco is K-Mart's IMHO since it's specific to a very particular walker in ROTJ.  The problem then of course is it standing up.  If you feel like putting a lock washer into some joints, it stands just fine then.

The new one is all around superior for standing and staying that way, but goes back to a more generic deco...  I'm fine with that since I pretty much don't mind hoarding a pile of these to customize, and since I'm customizing I don't mind fixing their standing issues, but yeah, this is probably the best version of the walker they've done for standing so far.  Beyond that, it was more of the same at a higher price...  At $25 it's fantastically priced really though, for what it is.  Below what I consider even fair for it.
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" AT-ST Walker w/Driver
Post by: Rob on November 21, 2017, 10:43 AM
What about the driver?  Anything different / new about him?  I put in a pre-order at BBTS and they only asked $4 to ship, so the price is definitely right.  I don't particularly need another AT-ST, but if that driver is different at all I'd want one of those and it would probably be worth it.

I missed the K-Mart one and I'm kicking myself for it.  Auctions seem to range from $35 to hundreds of dollars depending on what the seller is looking for and whether or not it's open.  So I'm watching those hoping to find one on the low end eventually.

Drive is the same as the K-Mart 2-pack one that looks like Malkin.

$24.99? Shoot I'm putting in an order now. These vanished when TLJ merch came out and I never saw them discounted

Really?  My stores have literally stacks of these things.  Some on the bottom some on the top shelf and some have them on the bottom shelf and top shelf.  Only two stores blew them out here, but they did no goofing off and really just bottomed out the price and got rid of them.

The walker is a great toy but the whole price plus this not really having a place or purpose hurt it plus it wasn’t long ago it was out for less.  If they’d released it as a Rogue One vehicle around time the movie came out it might’ve done better.

Yeah I swear my area has become some sort of toy void recently. Only WM stocked the 6" speeders, only Target has the 6" centerpiece line. The most AT-STs I ever saw at a single store was 5.

Former JediDefender Poster Famine picked one of these up for me at his local WM for $15 yesterday. These have made a resurgence in my area, but no stores have them below the $60 MSRP.

$15 is a great price, but I've got 17 twin cockpit At-St's over all. I think I'm done.  :P

These finally hit $15 here so I picked up a couple over lunch. Sixty bucks for this thing just seems crazy in retrospect.

Hmmm... BBTS (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/Product/VariationDetails/65211) is offering these @ $24.99 with a Jan 2018 ship date.

Just got an alert from EE that they will be getting some Black Series AT-STs now too.

Not sure how EE thinks they are going to sell them for $59.99 (https://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HSC1970&id=JE-405087801) when BBTS is charging $25 and Walmart is clearing them out for $15, but hey go for it I guess. :P

I made an excursion to some of the local WalMarts near me today.  I found one store that had at least 8 AT-ST's.  I couldn't find a price scanner that worked, so instead I scanned one with the WalMart app.  It rang up there at $36.  Not the $16 sweetheart deal I've seen some people posting, but it's a lot more of a bargain than it was at full price.

Brickseek shows the huge variation in price locally. Only stores with any AT-STs left are at stores that still haven't discounted from $60. I picked up two @ $15 last week, and my Wife got me one more on Monday.

I’ve been using that to scour the area and I cleared out 2 stores that were rural and blew them out for $15 a long time ago.

So I did the same thing and both my local stores cleared the atsts out too so I pounced and got what they had.  Some not as local stores had them but the two I was watching sold out of 8 and 9 both in a day.

One store even shows -2 and the one local store I cleaned out shoes +2 somehow.  Weird.  But locally now all the atsts for $15 are gone and anything left anywhere is full price.  One store used to be my closest Wally and they have 9-10 so I’m watching them if they go to $15.  They were sorta selling slowly at $30 everywhere that discounted at first but the $15 was too good to pass up for anyone and some appeared to sell 9-10 in a single day.  My haul was 5 of them...  I love it and will custom some up.  They don’t eat up a ton of space too oddly enough.

I had so many of this already there was no way I’d pay $60 on them but I’m pretty happy I did get a bunch.  It’s still a great vehicle, regardless of deco.

I got a couple at $25 from BBTS. They should arrive tomorrow.

Man...if I found them for $15/per I would go nuts. The Walmart near me had them for $60 the last time I checked, and that's just not going to happen. I wish I could trade in my Endor AT-ST (the one with the 'never standing" action feature) to Hasbro for one of these new ones.

You gotta fix that Endor walker man!  Especially if you have Chewbacca and the Ewoks to drive it!  Slip some external lock washers into the weakest joint(s) and get it to stand tall and proud.

The $15 price yeah I have basically been willing to go clear a store out.  It’s a great vehicle and just fun to customize and have a bunch of them.  It’s one of those things I’m glad Hasbro made it and has released it this often, but I think they’re probably done on this now.

Oh that fix is wonderful!  Hasn't fallen down since.  Thanks for the tutorial, Jesse.  I have the Elton John tune "I'm Still Standing" playing in the display case as well (No, I really don't) to celebrate the fix.

No problem on the fix.

Also if people are looking for some alternative, harbor freight used to sell wheel weights in various ounces.  They’re small squares that have sticky backing to stick to your wheels to balance them after a tire change.  You can get them at auto parts stores too but more $.

Anyway these would help add some weight inside the feet and not be any permanent damage to it.  Just clean the area with an alcohol wipe first then stick them on.  Just thought I’d toss this in here too.

I have several of the Legacy ones, some have fallen and snapped joints over time.  I also have an Endor one with major standing issues, so I might have to try out the lock washer trick, though the weights for the feet sound like an interesting alternative.

As for the new one, I ought one at full price at Walmart when they first got them in.  Eventually I picked up 2 more of these at Ross for $22.99, and got 2 more in from BBTS recently.  Hope to eventually find a spot for them in dioramas.

If any of you guys stockpiling these don't need the drivers, please let me know.  I'd gladly buy up more of them and/or trade you something for them.  I'm looking for some extras to go in my ROTJ Shuttle landing display.
