Title: My New Empire
Post by: Jeff on February 4, 2006, 09:20 PM
Things are about to happen this summer that will completely change my life - don't worry though, it's a good change.

The self-imposed waiting period has passed, so I can now reveal that my wife and I will be adding to our family.   :)

She is due in early August, but will most likely deliver in late July because we are expecting twins, which usually arrive a few weeks early I'm told - about 38wks instead of 40wks  (they arrive early even without the traumatic betrayal of your Jedi husband).

Just thought I'd share the good news with all my great friends here at JD (and I was too lazy to send out a bunch of PMs  ;)).

Thanks for all the congrats.   :)

My wife is doing fine so far, not too much morning sickness and the little bit she had is starting to pass now as we enter 2nd trimester.  It is still a bit shocking to me as I think about going from 0 to 2 kids in just 9 months, but I'm sure it's going to be great fun.

So what are ya having, do you know?  Boys,Girls or both?

We don't know sexes yet, and we're not sure if we want to know, but with all the ultrasounds that are planned, I'm sure we'll find out before hand.

As I always tell the new dads around here, you better get as much sleep as you can right now :P ;)

Yeah, we have been sleeping in on the weekends far more than we have in the past...   trying to get those lazy sundays in while we can.   ;)

Are you going to give them SW names? ;)

For some reason, my mom seems to think Luke and Leia would be a good fit if there is one of each, but my wife has already ix-nayed any SW-themed names...  :P

This is such awesome news Jeff!  Congrats!

Twins, eh?  Wow.  That would have blown me away had we had twins the first time around!

If you do find out the sex(es), just remember, ultrasounds aren't 100% accurate when it comes to that.  As I'm sure you've heard many times already, many people have had big surprises when the baby comes out with an extra (or lacking) part on the big day!  ;)

It never mattered to us if it was a boy or girl, as long as the baby was healthy and now we have a 10 year old self proclaimed Princess and self appointed 4 year old Sith Lord.

Jeff, sorry for the late reply, but congratulations man...  :)  You deserve all the happiness I'm sure parenting gives you, so really I hope everything is safe and healthy for your wife and children, and that you don't stress too much as a father if you have a little girl...

I've got a number of neices...  I can only fathom what I'd feel if i were their father instead of just their uncle.  That's been stressful enough!

Time for an update...

Things are going quite well in our house.  Mommy-to-be is doing very well, minor aches and pains are setting in.  Also setting in are the weird cravings and the required trips to the grocery store at midnight to buy odd food items.

We went to the doctor last week for a level 2 ultrasound (recommended for multiples to be sure that both babies are doing well).  This ultrasound is a bit more complicated than the usual version since it can do color for contrasts - things like infrared, density, etc.  As a result, we had some very cool scans - a chance to see the valves in their little hearts, the blood flow in the cord, lotsa of other very cool things.   :)

Also as a result of this level two ultrasound, we learned the sexes of our little babies.  We put the family members through a fun guessing game and tortured them for a bit before revealing the news...

We will be having fraternal twin boys.

Very exciting to say the least, and knowing we will be having two boys set a few changes in motion for the color scheme of the developing nursery.  Less neutral colors, more blues.   ;)

22 weeks down, quite a few more to go...  :D

Great news Jeff!  It's good to hear that all four of you are doing well.  ;)

Fraternal twin boys, eh?  Sounds like you could have an Anakin vs Obi-Wan future.  Better start buying your lightsabers.  ;D

Twin boys -- how exciting -- and fun! :)  Congratulations.  Glad to hear that mommy-to-be is still feeling pretty good.  I see many more late night craving runs, diaper runs, and, of course, toy runs in your future. ;)  FYI -- WalMart has twin packs of lightsabers....... ;)

Absolutely outstanding news there Jeff!  Congratulations to you and Kir'.  Glad to hear they're boys, phew!  I couldn't imagine bringing a girl(s) into this world, knowing what us guys/pigs are like (as Brent's already cautioned about above).  Anyway, if you're ever out in Cali again and need a baby sitter, just LMK.  But wait 'til after they're potty-trained though.  Thanks.

Nice work.  Good luck and good health to the whole Nataku crew in the upcoming months.  But will you still have time for the Presidency...?  :P

Well, we've started the third trimester now and a few folks have asked, so I thought I'd update via the thread instead of a bunch of PMs.  ;)

Over the weekend, we finished up the last of the painting and a few other things (curtain rod, blinds, floor, etc) and moved some furniture into the boys' room.

(http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/3-06/tn_boysroom1.jpg) (http://www.jedidefender.com/image.pl?http://home.comcast.net/~jksmentek/theboys/boysroom1.jpg)   (http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/3-06/tn_boysroom2.jpg) (http://www.jedidefender.com/image.pl?http://home.comcast.net/~jksmentek/theboys/boysroom2.jpg)

Things are coming along nicely.

We've just got one crib set up so far.  Her dad is in the process of building the other one and he should be done at some point this summer (it'll go along the wall in the empty space there between the change table and the other crib).

Still not finished, but the stuff that is left is "menial" stuff - buy a rug, new overhead light fixture, new light switch plate, new outlet plates (and covers), and new phone jack (the old one is broken, you can see it dangling from the wall in photo #4) and a few other miscellaneous things here and there.

The painting was definitely the most involved part of the project.  Lots of taping, but it turned out really well and actually looks like what the boss envisioned.  ;)

Mommy-to-be is doing well, but starting to feel more aches and pains (aside from getting kicked constantly).  The boys are doing well too - everything is looking good and both are healthy and growing, so we're very happy about that.    :)

The naming process is moving along as well... we're close on one name and stuck on the second.   :-\  Still have time to figure it out though...

(and, since you're probably wondering, no star wars related items have been purchased for the boys room... yet.  :P)

Cool, Jeff.  The day will be here before you know it.

A suggestion if I may - buy (or ask) for bigger clothes than the tag says.  The boys will grow out them so quick that sometimes they'll only get to wear the outfit once (or not at all).

Title: Re: My New Empire

D'oh!  Must have missed your question Tracy, sorry.   :-[

Today is the start of week 34 (so, 33weeks, 1day).  Next Tuesday is the first big target date.  Her doctor would really like to make it to the 36 week date, but if we make it past 34 weeks, we can deliver at the local Hospital without transferring to a NICU specialty hospital.

It's really hard to believe that we are only 2-4 weeks away from the end now.   :o

Kirstin is now at home because her doctor recommended bed-rest to avoid a few complications (swelling/edema).  Otherwise, both her and the boys are doing well.  The boys are growing at a pretty good clip too.  According to the ultrasound measurements last week, they are both around 5.5 pounds, which puts them in the about the 85th percentile for growth for twins.   :)

And a nursery update...

We've got everything pretty much set now in the boys room.  Over the last month, we...

- bought a rug for the floor (room has pergo flooring and the floor gets cold in the winter)
- installed the new overhead light fixture, new phone jack, and new outlets (and covers)
- set up changing table with baskets/etc.
- set up a dresser/closet for baby clothes
- washed about 100 loads of baby clothes, sheets, blankets, toys, etc (from various sources - showers, garage sales, hand-me-downs)

And a naming update...

The naming process is moving along as well... we're close on one name and stuck on the second.   :-\  Still have time to figure it out though...

We've finalized one name and are getting really close on the second one...  :)

Title: Logan and Liam Arrive!
Post by: Jeff on July 6, 2006, 12:55 AM
They are here...   ;D

Twin A - Logan - 6lb, 2oz.

Twin B - Liam - 6lb, 7oz.

There were a few minor respiratory complications (since they were born 5.5 weeks early), so they are spending some time in the NICU at the local Children's Hospital (and that's where I've been pretty much since Sunday, well I've actually been one hospital or another since last Friday - but more on that later).

Everything appears to be going very well now though, mom was discharged today, so things are looking good.  Babies should be able to come home next week if they keep up the progress!

Hopefully, I'll have more time later this week to empty the digital camera and show off some pictures. :)

Great news Jeff, congratulations to you and the missus especially.

Early twins at 5.5 lbs isn't much of a big deal really.  What I mean is in the respect that they're actually pretty big and healthy, just normal precautions.  Or so my sister says and I'll trust her, given she's been a nurse dealing with premies for 20+ years.  They'll be home and you guys will be losing sleep in no time.

I'm guessing you have to buy an extra case or two of Kubricks from now on to get the boys started.   ;)

Congratulations Jeff and Kirstin -- what a blessing!!! The boys are a nice, healthy size for early twins.  Our daughter was 5 weeks/5 days early and a 6 pounder also.  She was a little slow on the nursing/gaining for the first few months -- but she's on full steam ahead all the time now.  Your boys will do great - they'll be home in no time!  I assume since they were born 1 minute apart that a c-section was needed?  Take good care of mama so she can take care of those babies :)  Great names btw :)

Congrats Jeff! Those are some really healthy weights for 5-week premie twins. Our first daughter was only a week early and she was just two ounces heavier than your boy Liam. Glad to hear everyone is doing great. What a blessing!

Huuuraah,  Thats great Jeff. Glad to hear the Mother and the Kids are ok.
The NICU now adays is mostly just precautions. My Mom is an NICU nurse practitioner, and she said that many times the babies are in and out within days, and the ones who are really bad get out in a few weeks. So congrats. Get plenty of sleep now.. before they get home. ;)

Brief update...

Logan is now off his oxygen, out of his incubator, and has been upgraded to a crib.  Still has a feeding tube, as the respiratory troubles cause a bit of trouble with the whole suck/swallow/breathe eating thing.  (he's got mom's light hair)

Liam is out of his incubator and has been upgraded to a crib, but he's still getting a little O2 help.  No biggie, really.  He also still has a feeding tube, same reason as his brother.  (and he's got dad's dark hair)

Both boys are getting quite a bit stronger each day, so it should only be a few more days before they get to come home!

Wow, hard to believe that it's been just over three months now...

Older (but smaller) Brother Logan is in the gray, Younger (but bigger) Brother Liam in the navy/orange.   :)

I think it's safe to say that my life is completely different than it used to be.  These two buggers take up sooooo much of my time, it's not even funny - you'll see most of my posts come from work (before 5pm) or after bedtime (after 11pm).  But you know, I wouldn't have it any other way.  The past three months have been so demanding, but at the same time, probably the most meaningful three months of my life...

I feel exactly the same way.  Before I had my first son, work was getting to me and I was at a point where nothing mattered.  Ever since he was born, my life has been meaningful and I would not have it any other way.

They give me a reason to keep going.

I'm glad your family is doing well and everyone is healthy.

Edit:  Any idea on what they'll be for Halloween?   8)

Logan:

Liam:

Uploaded these for another post, but I thought I'd share with everyone here...

Man, these last few months have been crazy.  :D

The dudes are doing extremely well.  We've moved into the "eating baby foods" phase and have even dipped into "people food" a time or two (a french fry here, a spoon of ice cream there).  No crawling yet, but that's OK as I am not too anxious for both of them to be mobile just yet.  Hard enough taking care of them both at the same time without them moving around on their own...  :P

I still can't believe it's been 7.5 months.  Time has just whipped by - Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's.  Just crazy how far they have come - looking at my two 20 lb boys, I have a hard time remembering that these are the same guys as the premie 6 lb babies I brought home from the Hospital all swaddled up in blankets.

Jeff, they are just adorable. :)  Isn't it amazing how far they come in just a few short months?  Time for some serious baby-proofing as they will soon be getting into everything.  The two of them working together will keep you and your wife on your toes. ;)

Pretty cute boys Jeff.  I'm not sure if it's just the angle of the pictures, but Logan actually looks older than Liam.  Or maybe it's just me.

It's the hair and the cheeks.  Logan has more (longer) hair and Liam has the chubbier cheeks.  A few others have said that same thing, that Logan looks older than Liam...

I guess they look the same age to me because I see them everyday.   ;)

Awesome pics.  There's really nothing like being a parent.  Makes things like collecting seem pretty insignificant, doesn't it?

Very happy for you... my little boy is now 6 weeks old, and is easily the best thing that's ever happened to me, so I certainly appreciate you showing so many pics.  Here's one of my son, taken a few days ago -

Again, very happy for you.  Already a year old!  That's great seeing those pics.  It's really cool seeing the pics of them as they get older like that.  They grow up too fast.

BTW Liam and Logan didn't have enough cake on their faces, you can never have to much cake on your face. :P
