Title: Walmart Dewback w/Sandtrooper
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on July 13, 2009, 10:51 PM
Sandtroopers got a killer scoop:

Looks SWEET! WM is getting a lot of exclusives this year.

Sweeet! I hope these show up in Canada, I've been passing on the POTF2 Dewback just hoping somthing like this would come along.

I already added my POTF2 one to my trade list. Sayonara!!!

Count me in for 3-4 of these!

Man, there were a lot of leaks in a 24hr period. I cannot wait to see what else is coming!

We got the same image tonight as well.  I love the resculpting but I wont' retire my old one yet.  They look different but still good together I think.  This looks pretty sharp, and I'm curious how the Trooper is articulated.  No word from the individual who sent it, as to the figure's quality/details.

More at SDCC I suppose. ;)

It looks good, but not sure I'd get one.  I don't have the room in my Sandtrooper display and the POTF2 one is just fine in there.  If I see it and it's a drastic improvement, I'll make a swap though.

I think the picture leaking out is very cool.  But there's really not a whole lot of detail to be seen.  I'm looking forward to seeing this next week at SDCC.
Title: Re: Legacy Dewback
Post by: Jesse James on July 13, 2009, 11:44 PM
From what I've seen in the image, it's got a removable saddle it seems, which alone for customizing makes it more appealing to me.  I'd like to do a "nude" one roaming free maybe around my Tuskens or something.  The Sandtrooper's stance implies either new legs spread a bit for riding the beast, or ball/socket hips, but I've seen no proof of either one way or the other either.

Paint looks crisper/brighter than the original...  I'm geeked to get this really, as I've had that lame ass POTF2 Sandtrooper hanging out with all these newer sculpts, and it just looks different/odd in the mix there.

Someone customized a newer sculpt torso onto the POTF2 lower body, and it looked pretty sharp, but was never quite my cup of tea.

Yeah, something negative to be said about that.  The AW showed up at about every other store here...  Very odd.  Some still have AW's in stock, oddly enough.  One put them on clearance, but for full price.    ???

Good news on this one for sure. I like this one a lot. I still like the POTF2 version as well but that old Sandtrooper that came with it is very outdated. I actually just put my two POTF2 Dewbacks and my custom Dewback away because I couldn't stand to look at the trooper on top of them anymore. I may have to try and track down a few extras of the trooper to outfit my old Dewbacks with.
Title: Re: Walmart Dewback w/Sandtrooper
Post by: Jesse James on July 14, 2009, 04:00 AM
I was trying to enhance the image to see more details, and I think for the first time ever we may very well be getting the "other" Sandtrooper gun.  It's an MG-15 with ammo drums, and the stock removed.  It was basically the gun mounted in some German airplanes in WW2...  notably, the Stuka Dive Bomber had a rear-facing one.

I've asked Hasbro on this weapon specifically in the Q&A, maybe they're gonna deliver it.  The other option I came up with is it's the Spacetrooper's blaster rifle, which is cool, being re-used in maybe a simple black deco.  It's tough to tell though.

Wookiepedia has an article on the gun I think it might be though, which I guess it got a designation from LFL finally, after all these years.

It's not easily seen in the movies which makes it kind of lame that the Wookiepedia article claims it as the "preferred weapon of Sandtroopers".  I'd say that's inaccurate.  Then again it's Wookiepedia, so whatever.

Anyway, I'm gonna go on a limb and say first that I THINK this Sandtrooper comes with a spiffy new blaster.  We'll see.  I hope he does because I really would like two of these at least, maybe more.  Three may be worth the $$$.  I just hope they're a fair price.

I think looks more like the MG-15. Great catch Jesse. This is all the more reason to pick up multiples of the set. :)

****! There's no Walmarts in NYC. This looks really cool though. I need to figure out a way to get a couple of these! I'm hoping the sandtrooper has articulated hips, but it also seems like he may just have a split-leg stance.

I was really happy to see this image yesterday.  I've been hoping we'd see re-dos of some of those mid-sized beasties (I'm hoping for a new Taun Taun at some point), and this one looks pretty good for the picture.  The main drawback for me, as others have mentioned too, is that it is exclusive to Wal-Mart.  Our local stores have been very hit and miss with SW exclusives, and our closest store has downsized its toy aisle in general.  The A-Wing never did hit any of our stores locally, so I hope there is better luck with this year's crop of exclusives (which is now the Dewback, the Evolutions, and possibly a rumored new AT-ST?).  Could be another crazy 2nd half with exclusives this year.

Agreed.  Especially when I have to compete with BBTS sometimes eating up all of WM's exclusives - of the few stores that actually sell exclusives.  Looks very nice though.  Will pick one up if I can find one.

$29.96?

That's what I'm thinking.

Nine bucks for the figure, $20ish for the beast.

Don't forget about the $18 dlx CW repack line that's out right now.  I'd guess this is an easy $30-$35 set based on that - especially since it's an exclusive.  Though I hope I'm way off.   :-\

I put it at $25 minimum.  I think you've got to look at the A-Wing as the precedent on WalMart's pricing.

Not that you can go strictly by it, but the box looks to be the same size as the A-Wing box, so I think it should follow the same pricing as that prior exclusive.  (By the way, has anyone seen one in the wild lately?)

If Hasbro wasn't charging 25 bucks for the Gelagrub/Felucian Clone "Battle Pack", I would agree with you.  This being said, if Wal-Mart charges less than 29.96 for it, I'd be shocked.  Given that the A-Wing with figure was 30 bucks last year before the across-the-board price hike on the SF assortment at Wal-Mart, I'm thinking that this will probably wind up costing close to 35 bucks.   :-\

My favorite thing about this, that's obvious so far, is the sculpting of the beast itself.  The POTF2 version, though still holding up well, looks like it has the texture of a pebble sidewalk.  This new one sports wrinkles and stretched skin in all of the articulated places, and looks more realistic for it!
Title: Re: Walmart Dewback w/Sandtrooper
Post by: Jesse James on July 15, 2009, 01:58 AM
I think my favorite thing is a removable saddle.  I've wanted to do "pack animal" type looks for the beasts from Tatooine...  This'll be neat for the Dewback because I'd like to do one sort of carrying heavier gear for the Imperials, no rider, and that was tough with the old one.  I was pondering using a vintage, but this is far superior.

I'm curious on the price as everyone else is.  That'll be the kicker, ultimately.

This looks to be battle packed size, so I'd expect a battle pack price.

If this set does make it out at $25 Battle Pack pricing, then that makes the upcoming  Geligrub/Clone BP look ridiculous at that same $23/$25 price point.  :-X

I'lll put my vote in the $30ish range category...

I will put my final guesstimate at $30 a pop. I would not be surprised if it's $35 but $30 seems right even for an exclusive.

There are a boatload of exclusives this year which is going to be a pain to track them all down. I wonder how many more will be revealed at SDCC. Off the top of my head we have:

Target
x6 Geo 2 packs
Wedge X-Wing

Wal-Mart
x6 Darktrooper BAD 2 packs
Dewback
Octupurra
x3 Evolution sets

TRU
Imperial V-Wing

What other exclusives are coming that I missed?

"Still?"  It only showed up around here about 3 weeks ago.  There are still stores in this area that never got them, and only two stores within 20 miles of here ever got the RC droids.   Target's screwing the pooch.

I keep forgetting I live in the land of Target.  Our Rancors/RC Droids hit over two months ago and they've just been sitting - wasting away, well not the RC Droids, but the Rancors have been.  I just wish WM was as agressive when it comes to clearance.  Most recent memory is one A-Wing that sat and sat at full price for six full months until someone finally picked it up.

Anywho....

There's a pile of people at Rebelscum that apparantly think this is fake.  I'm not kidding.  They're claiming the body is the POTF2 Dewback with a new head...  I'm sorta stunned at the decline in membership quality there anymore.  Did they all just jump into the hobby yesterday?  Sheesh....   :-\

Well, Rob said he found an A-Wing with a Brainiac, maybe someone took swapping to the extreme?   :P

At first I was thinking that because I have a Dewback and a Sandtrooper this would be an easy pass, but since its a new design and a whole lot better than the previous I may revisit that decision depending on the price.

I'm ok with that. Hasbro will just have the official unveiling. And they're shots will be much crisper. Besides, showing off the final product, you know all sorts of pics will be plastered all over collecting sites. So these little snippets are great to get our collector hearts pumping. Hasbro confirming these items will just be the icing for us.

I do not think $30 is bad when you consider most stores sell BP's for $25.00. $30 is fair in today's pricing. I will be buying at least two maybe 3 of these. It's OTC so I will support it regardless, I am sick of prequel/CW ****.

It's not a bad price but at the same time it's still about $5 too much to me.  It's like the action figures.  Those shoulde be $6.50 tops but of course they are $7.50-$8.00.  I will still buy it but maybe I will be inclined to wait for a clearence instead?

It's true, and Hasbro even flew me out to set up the "joke".

Haha to all of you noobs!!!!111!12

I will get 1 for sure...  At $30 if that price holds true, I'll wait for a sale if they're wildly abundant to get a 3rd.

Should they be sort of like the A-Wing (which was sporadic around me)...  It's cool enough I could cave and get 3 at full price though, as I really would like one to make sort of a "pack animal", and two for the army building goodness.  It's a good update, poseable, and the figure is nice as well as the beast.  This is in the $30-ish range for me.  $25's better, but eh...   :-\

Love the new gun too. :P  I'm glad I was right on that, as that kicks much bootay.

I'm definitely down for at least one, and hopefully two or three.  At $30 each, we'll have to see how many - plus WM exclusives have been notoriously spotty around our neck of the woods.  Either way, it looks very well done, and I hope this (and the Rancor) are just the start of seeing more of the beasties get remade (bring on a new Taun Taun!).

I'm going to pick one up if it's $30 or less.  It does look very nice, I love the dewback itself, the stormtrooper gun but not the helmet so much.

If it's over $30, Walmart can keep mine.

$30 for an exclu is normal I'd say, but then add in that's basically all new, minus the reused partts for the stormie, and it's really a good deal we're getting.  I'll defnately get 1 fullprice maybe 2.  If score sale 3.

It is a beautifully sculpted beast, but a little less accurate to the dinosaur-like original film prop than I'd like.  It appears more lizard-like and less dinosaur in appearance, I think.  I feel the head of the POTF2 version is MUCH closer to the film appearance, but you just can't argue the sculpt of the skin...

I agree. The one good thing about the POTF2 version (in comparison to this version) was the head sculpt, but have a properly-scaled Dewback is nice no matter what.

I got the new Wal-Mart Exclusive Dewback a little early, and thought I'd snap (to my best abilities) a small gallery of boxed and loose images.  The Trooper doesn't come out great but he's just showing the flexibility of the new hip joints.  Better than I imagined.

Anyway,

(http://www.jedidefender.com/jmccracken/HasbroWMDewback/09Leg_WMDewback012Loose_TN.jpg)(http://www.jedidefender.com/jmccracken/HasbroWMDewback/09Leg_WMDewback013Loose_TN.jpg)(http://www.jedidefender.com/jmccracken/HasbroWMDewback/09Leg_WMDewback014Loose_TN.jpg) (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1256097414,18513,)
Clicky to check out the gallery!

The Dewback has:

-removable saddle and bridle for a "nudeback" Dewback,  Nyuck nyuck
-added detailing and size
-Nice paint details to highlight the improved scales/sculpting
-neck articulation, ankle ball/socket joints, and limited ball/socket hips (4)

The Sandtrooper he comes with is lacking any dirt deco, so there may be some disappointed people in that regard, however it's an improved sculpt and articulation, and makes a great Stormtrooper and a nice clean Sandtrooper.

A highlight, for me at least, is the new Sandtrooper rifle which is the MG-32/34 (German World War 2) machine gun that was often mounted in aircraft.  It lacks a stock, which makes it kind of weird that it's listed as a Sniper Rifle in EU source material...  It has a TON of detailing sculpted into it, including wires to the scopes, holes in the barrel (as it should have), lines, greeblies, and other detailing.  It's one of the finer Imperial weapon sculpts IMO.  I'd take a dozen more of these guns alone!

The electro-staff is black, which makes it unique, and the Trooper's pauldron is that of a "Sergeant" or non-com officer.

The trooper's helmet sculpt appears, to me anyway, to be new...  His hips are all new, as is his belt, and if I had to guess I'd say he may be completely new, just based on existing parts.  But a new tooling is what I'm guessing he is, ultimately.  His belt features no attachment points for a grenade, but it looks as though it's intended to be removed.

Here's a neat thing.  His left hand is sculpted posed "downward" somewhat.  It holds the gun nicely pointed at the ground in an "at ease" position.  It's interesting when he's holding the rifle, as most Troopers holding this gun seemed to hold them like this.  Kind of neat the figure has that "look" to it then.

Again my apologies for the pictures.  They're not great but get the details across nice enough I think, and I'm by no means a skilled photographer with my little Sony camera. ;)  Enjoy!  This is easily one of the cooler OT pieces I've seen in a long time.

The POTF2 head is alot closer to the picture. If it was just smaller and on the body of the new one it would be better. However, the vintage one just makes me happy. It's a happier looking toy.

I'll be keeping both displayed, but hopefully replacing my Trooepr on the POTF2 with a new one at some point...  I'm going to hopefully find enough of the new Dewback to have a nudeback running around a Tatooine shelf or put all pack stuff on him and have him just being led around as a pack animal.

The Sandtrooper really is a highlight to this set too, if I may say...  He's clean so he's a nice Stormtrooper, but the hip articulation really adds a lot of fun to the guys in white.  I'm hopeful this figure sees the light of day again, somehow, and hopefully in some abundance.  I'd dig him as a Stormtrooper or Sandtrooper and would happily buy either one (especially since this one lacks dirty deco).

Damn, I was hoping to pass this one up. But the sculpt is marginally better, and the deco on both the trooper and the dewback is much better. The added leg articulation of the trooper is awesome. I love that the gear is removable from the dewback. Oh and the sweet sweet sniper the trooper comes with!

I'll be getting 2 for certain.

And I too hope this trooper sees the light of day again, either as more/other sandtroopers or a basic stormtrooper. That sniper rifle definitely needs to come out again. If not, I hope someone makes a good repo and sells it. I'd like a few of them.

What's this set going for? $30 is fine by me, though I hope less. more and I'll have to rethink a second purchase.

Yeah...  Like I said in that thread, an extra figure would've probably sufficed for me, in the Gelagrub set.  Specifically, a new Bly with removable helmet and the proper paint applications would've been great.  I'd be all over getting that Grub set at that point.

As it stands now I'll buy one and probably will feel some shame in doing so for full price.  :-\

It's not as bad as stuff like the Lars Family Dome, or the Sarlacc Pit set.  Those  I waited for clearance.  The Grub I'll buy full price...  Same as the Ball Turret, god willing I could find one of course (much less the two I need).  ::)

Like my pal Jesse, I was also able to secure a Dewback a little early.  And, once again like my pal Jesse, I think it's easily one of the cooler OT pieces we've seen in a while.  Every so often a toy comes along that reminds me that I might just like Star Wars more than ESB.  This is one of those toys.  The beast? Fantastic.  The Sandtrooper? Fantastic.   :)

This is also the kind of thing that reminds me why I like the modern SW line and don't want it to go away...  I'm really thinking the AT-ST is going to be another similar shot in the arm, as far as the modern line goes, and how much I enjoy the stuff we do get right now.

Hell, just finding some new Legacy would be nice but my stores are littered with Stormtrooper Head legacy stuff.

I picked up two of these last night. They are pretty cool, but not as good of a deal as the giant Tri-Droid. The Dewback looks awesome, but doesn't do much. It's also difficult to get the Sandtrooper on the saddle in a way that looks natural. The trooper itself is awesome, and the new rifle is gravy. I'm really hoping there is a Saga Legends release of this new Sandtrooper next year.

Dewbacks are on Wal-Mart.com and you can use Site-to-Store pickup if you want so you can stop pissing around looking for them (some areas I guess these are scarce, compared to others).

So far we're not seeing AT-ST's much at all yet, so I hope those show up on WM.com because I'm ordering all I want there and avoiding the hunt hastle.

I did exactly that and ordered 2 more online earlier today.  No added cost for shipping, so you're basically just deciding which store will get the stuff you want and having them hold it for you as soon as it arrives.  I normally save my props for Target with their ultra simple system for checking inventory, but Wal-Mart's STS system is pretty slick.

Agreed, and I'm incredibly hopeful that the AT-ST shows because I'll gladly buy all on the STS system.  WM, if they had the inventory system where you can look things up online and whatnot, would be king if they'd do that.  Well, I'd not mind seeing Lay-Away come back too.  I used it...  It didn't save you, per se, but it made a huge purchase feel more like a regular one...  Call it psychological but I'm less likelyt o buy something like a TV at WM because of them not having that anymore.

Very decent set. Well done over all, but I'm still putting together my thoughts on the Storm/sandtrooper. The hip joints are okay, but don't seem to be integrated ideally. A tad bulky. An improvement? Sure. Perfect? Just short, which is too bad since this is probably the rumored new SA Stormtrooper we're getting.

Got mine yesterday in the mail...I absolutely love this thing! I got two of 'em, and I'm really happy with it. It really doesn't look like the special edition version of the Dewback, but from what I understand it more closely resembles the TPM version. It's fine with me, as I really like the look of this thing. But then again, I grew up playing with dinosaur toys along with my star wars figures, so it's a huge nostalgia thing for me.

I think the sculpt is very well executed. This seems like an animal rather than a toy, with distinct muscle tone. I'm happy that there's no action feature, and the accessories are removable. I'm almost considering getting another to put with my TPM Tattooine figures.

The Sandtrooper is pretty cool too. I haven't placed him side by side with the other troops to check the height difference, but he seems great on the Dewback (which is where he'll stay). The new gun is badasssssss!

All in all, I highly recommend this beast!

The dewback is very accurate, a new mold in green, superb paint job,

the other good point is the paint job of sandtrooper, based on votc stormie, this time he has all the hip area in black, a detail hasbro should have consider earlier in that sculpt.

I haven't see one since this time last year.  There was one Wally that still had a couple of AT-STs clearanced, at regular price, that finally moved sometime just before this past Christmas.

I think the new Tie Bomber is going to take their place.  All the Wally's near me either didn't get it in until after Christmas (and its stocked an the opposite side of the isle half way down from the SW toys...) or has them clearanced for regular price.
