Hey folks, this is double posted from the Rebel Scum forums. Thanks for looking!

Chapter 2 update for Rho One-Three-Eight's background story! Find it here. (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=3&Number=1783577&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1&PHPSESSID=)

Added articulation to my Scorch. Nervous as hell while I did it, too. I don't think it came out as clean as I would've liked. Tell me what you think!

Hey, folks. I've given this Clone a designation (subject to change in case it doesn't fit in with Clone designations, because I don't really read much Clone War material). Rho One-Three-Eight's story can be read here (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=3&Number=1783577&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1&PHPSESSID=),  chapter by chapter as they are updated in the Rebel Scum Fanfic forum! Please pardon my writing, thanks!

First, these are some shots of the same character that is represented in my first custom, the modified #41 made into the Unknown Tactical Ops Commander. This is his representation as a communications specialist during the Clone Wars, before the Phase2 armor was introduced - AOTC style:

Next up is his Original Trilogy form, during the Galactic Civil War. I sort of decided he'd be an engineer of sorts, sort of like the US Navy's Construction Battalion, specializing in both engineering and communications (complete with a synthleather equipment pouch [right hip], fusion torch tank [left hip] and backpack):

The 'badge' on his left breast is actually a control panel for his 'pacemaker.' (His ROTS representation has a hole in his chest through which a lightsaber blade can be placed. Details later)

And finally, the 'Evolutions' style shot!

Here's a sneak-peak at an AOTC clone custom. I'll have better pictures up when I get a chance to use the Digital SLR my school's loaning me:

=-=-=-==-=----------------------------
I was going to just make an SA Clone into a 501st legion, however, I kept messing up on the leg stripes (which I later found out that only a some 501st clones had, anyway,) and in doing so, stained his thighs blue from repeated correction and reapplication.

So, I decided to give him a little bit of the Bly treatment, and paint his entire thigh plates. One thing lead to another, and he ended up being a commander-esque 501st Clone.

Well, being that Appo is supposed to be the commander of the tactical ops unit, I thought I'd write a short fanfic-ish blurb (a.k.a., excuse for my painting ineptitudes. :P) later. But, for now, here is a snap shot:

Gday hyouriittai

Firstly welcome to JD and hope you have a great stay here.

Now I'm liking the style of your troopers very much you can see there has beed a great deal of thought going into them but the great thing that I like is that you have'nt gone overboard with the little extra's.
Also you've done a great job with the paint apps very nicely weathered but not over doing it well done and hope to see more.

Welcome! NIce looking set of clones youve got there. My fave of the bunch is the engineer. That design is simple yet very effective. Excellent work. Im glad you made it over here from RS, I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Very cool looking set of Fan Fic Troopers you've got there.

Comm. Clone> Great Concept. You did a Great job of smoothing the Top of the Helmet off, where the Fin was. What did the Process involved? The Marking look Geat Very Original and the weathering is top notch. This is my Favorite of the Bunch.

Engineer Trooper> Another Great Concept. The Blue Marking look good, although the Paint Aps. look a little thick on the Helmet.

um coGood Job keep It Up.

Those are some really cool, really creative clones you have there. My favorite(s) are probably the RotS one and the OT one. I really like the use of the AT-AT Driver head on the Evo Stormie body. The backstory is practical and convincing, and your paint apps are smooth and the weathering is perfect.

Nice stuff you got going here.  I like the assembly of the parts a lot, and the paint schemes look great.  The best part is you did the perfect amount of weathering on them!  And I like the AT-AT driver head a lot on the one, I've got a few of those waiting to be customized too.  Great udpate and welcome to the customizing community here!

Galactic Marine I'm working on. All the parts are obviously still in some serious need of work. Torso isn't connected, need to modify pauldron, file and maybe crop kama, maybe add a little sculpting to the helmet for accuracy and of course, paint. Also gonna modify the knee pads maybe, and the shinguards. Needa hadd a pack, too.

Recipe:
Saga 06 Snowtrooper - head (hollowed out) and shins
Evolutions ROTS Clone - entire upper body, knee joints, feet, kama and possibly pauldron for parts
Saga 06 AT-AT driver - upper legs and pelvis

The marines legs look a bit small compared to his torso I dont know why but it look odd to me.  ???
But it is still a great custom, I look forward to seeing more from you!  :)

It may be the akward angle at which the shot is taken, but you might be right! AT-AT drivers always seemed abit short, so this wouldn't surprise me. I'll measure it up to a #41 clone and see how their legs compare. Thanks for the excellent feedback, everyone.

Looking for suggestions! I'm using the Evolutions StarCorps kama for this Marine, however, I realized that these kama are relatively stiffer than those that come with the Green and Red Commanders or even Baccara (I think.) Since this Marine is going to be fully articulated in the legs, it'd be a waste if he couldn't kneel!

I know there are camps on both sides of the fence, but I was wondering: would you recommend softgoods for the kama? If so, what material? Thanks alot, folks and I hope to hear back.

Looks good! I think the snow detailing is a little too much- he would be moving around and I don't think the snow would stick to it. All in all, great job- I've yet to find an ATAT driver or a Snowtrooper, but when I do, I'll be making one of these bad boys too. Keep up the great work.

It would be all about how cold the temperature is and hard it is snowing for the snow to stick to him or not. Haven't you seen documentaries of Antarctica and such? They have snow on them even when they are working hard etc.

I think the snow detailing is great. Gives him a real world feel. One awesome custom. Thanks for sharing.

I love the snow look, and the only other thing I might add would be some on the boots. Give him that just walked through snow look. I don't know how far you would go up the leg with it, but I think it would bring the whole custom together.

The helmet you used is not the one from the Snowtrooper. Where did you get it, or did you cast it yourself. It really looks great.  ;)

I think you misinterpreted me. I love the snow look on his amor especially on the shoulder pads, but I just think it looks a tad too much on his rifle. It's a really cool custom, I dig the plastic kama, but the belt looks a little distorted on the left side.

The helmet actually is from the Saga Collection Snowtrooper! I dremmeled down the ridge on the helmet, and I added some "green stuff" to his mask and sculpted in the pseudo-Clone cheek pattern, painted over it, etc., to diminish the "goggle" look that the Marines dont have.

My interpretation of Corran Horn during the New Jedi Ordern ovels. Maybe a little too old. More like, Sean Connery as Corran Horn from the NJO novels?

Alot of the post-prequel produced art of Corran depict him in traditional Jedi robes, green in color. However, I feel that the image of the "new jedi order" has been altered significantly due to the prequel release, so I wanted to give him more of a modern jedi look.

The arms, torso and legs are Kit Fisto's, while the head is a complete repaint (my first!) of an Elite Force fellow, who the pouches also belong to. The skirting is off of the ROTS Tarkin, with some extra parts added on. I need to make an accurately colored lightsaber blade some how (transparent paint, I suppose?) and also a softgoods hooded cloak.

I really really like that Corran Horn! I don't mind that he looks a little older because he looks older on the cover of I, Jedi. I might have to try my hand at one of these to go with the NJO Luke I made. I also am digging the Galactic Marine! I don't think the snow detailing is too much as long as whoever he's standing with has similar detailing. Nice stuff!

The paint job is excellent. I just don't like the head. Its too detailed and Asian looking for the body and character. I take it that is not whistler he is talking to. Isn't his lightsaber blade silver?

digging the marine.  he'd look really good in some sort of small dio, knee deep in snow or something.  the skirt is a good addition and really looks like it belongs there.  i really like the paint apps/color choice for Corran, and the head is a good choice.  but i'll be damned when i first looked at it i was like oohhh!!! where'd you get the Bruce Willis head.  Is it just me?  Did you paint the head or did he come like that?

I think the head would've turned out alright if I knew how to paint better, lol. I'm thinking of redoing the eyes, because when I put the base coat on, it just looked like a guy squinting to me, so I couldn't paint anything otherwise. Though, looking at the original paint scheme, I think I can redo them so that they're, uh, open? lol.

No, that's not Whistler, it's just my R2-D2, thought it'd make a sufficient interaction prop.

Yes, his lightsaber blade is silver. Like I said in my post, I need to find a way to color a lightsaber without it losing that transluscent effect.

Thanks for the comments, though!

That's the original head sculpt/paint. I totally repainted it, and accidentally shut his eyes, but yeah. He looks exactly like Mr. Bruce-Die-Hard-Willis. Though, after I was done with it, goatee gray hair and all, I thought he sort of ressembled Sean Connery. Hmmm.

cool with a comparison pic between your paint job and the original, it definately gives your custom an extra point in how good it is.  i thought the paint apps on the head were the original, good job once again.

Here are the parts I've used so far for my Jaina Solo as Twin Leader (NJO, around "Rebel Dream" and "Rebel Stand".) I haven't started painting yet, and I also haven't received the head I've chosen, yet. So far, this is the recipe:

POTJ Luke Skywalker Pilot Gear
 - Portions of the legs, trimmed a total of 1/4" to shorten stature.
 - Torso

ROTS Palpatine (Black Outfit, with stun cuffs)
 - One of the boots (remarkably similar to the POTJ Luke boot)
 - Knee articulation

POTJ Imperial Officer
 - Swivel arms, dremmeled to a thinner size to match figure build

Bear with the headless shots. I have the work in progress posed beside a VOTC Leia and VOTC Han for height comparison. (Wookieepedia says Jaina is supposed to be shorter than Leia, but I think that'd be ridiculous in relaiton to the figures. The height data may also be from an earlier era.)

Aaah. Much better. Cool cape. One thing you might want to try is clear plastic rods for a lightsaber. You can buy them at most hobby stores. Then you can give it a tint with some glass paint.

You know, I just read a thread on Rebel Scum about that, so I'm probably gonna do that tonight if I get done with taxes on time.  ;D When I get my Early Bird kit, I'm probably gonna convert that R2 into a Whistler, despite the era conflict implied by that.

So, the rest of my Jaina fodder didn't come in today, and I told myself I had to work on something this weekend or I'd go crazy! So, here's this: a work in progress of my Agents of Chaos Han Solo, from The New Jedi Order.

I used to hate the new Saga Han in Carbonite Head cos of how his eyes are looking up all doofy like, but on this longer neck, the chin can tilt way down, and he looks like he's leering at you. Now if that's not the face of a man who just lost his best friend, I don't know what is. Of course, I'll be painting this and probably adding a belt and holster before It's done. The repaint will include the head, with all the aging that 25 years oughta do to a man.

Recipe:
Saga Collection - Han in Carbonite - head, hands, part of torso, and upper legs, upper neck/balljoint

21st Century: Battle at the Bulge guy - torso dremeled out for a jacket, lower arms

ROTS Palpatine (Captured in Cuffs) - Shoulder articulation, lower legs, upper part of torso for the "mandarin" collar, and neck peg.

Change the "image" to "img" and I think the photos will show up in line.

Interesting mix of parts, I think the mesh together pretty well.  I'm not a big fan of the XD soldier arms as I think the joints look a little "funny" but they seem to be okay on this one.

Thanks alot for the kind words. Yeah, you know, those XD arms are really awkward, but since I used their respective torso (the dremeled out jacket), I think you may be right, they might just work well for this piece. The angle of the elbow let's me put Han in this really cool gun slinger pose, like he's about to quickdraw on someone. I've never really been able to get that arm pose out of even a balljointed Star Wars fig, so I'm kind of happy about that!

Thanks for the advice on the image tags! I usually do change 'em, but last night the server was down hereat JD or something, so I was kind of in a rush and frustrated. Despite all that, I appreciate your help. It looks like D_N took care of it for me, though.  ;D

Pendragon
Hey there! Yeah, that was one major concern for me, the upper arm skinniness. The shoulders are exactoed off of the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine arms, so they are a little mismatched, but to tell the truth, I measured them up (excluding balljoint) with the XD arms (whose lower parts I used) and they are about the same thickness. The balljoint extends in, and sits inside the jacket arm hole, so it can actually get clearance and connect with the original torso sockets, so I think the thinness helps in functionality for the balljoint. I'm glad you like this, though!

Darth_Nirvana
Aw dude, you're a pal. Thanks for fixing that for me!

Chewie
Thanks Chewie, that means alot to me coming from you. as when I first got into customizing, I've always looked up to your creative use of materials, and especially your awesome paint jobs. I really appreciate that comment!

Now, the tricky part is painting this bugger. He's got tons of joints!

These are, quite frankly, amazing. The work involved in these is daunting, but you're pulling them off extremely well. Makes me want to get more experimental with my customs.

The Han is a favorite...I love how the jacket is turning out. Can't wait to see it finished.

Nope, that'd be the factory sculpt. Like I wsa saying, I never really liked this head sculpt until I popped it onto this custom-in-progress, and WOW it really did the job! Now that it's painted, I can't wait to finiish off the joints and apply some sealer. I'm relaly anxious to post the final product! Thanks for the comment, Ennis!

Here he is, folks, more or less done. Except, the holster on his waist is from the Elite Force line, acting as a peg warmer until I get another VOTC Han Solo Holster.

So, this is my rendition of Han during Agents of Chaos, the New Jedi Order book where he goes on a depression trip due to the death of a close friend. the whole series, if you ask me, looks like a funeral cos everyone's wearing black.

there are some obvious botches where the paint chipped, but I thought i could disguise it as weathering without anyone knowing. Oops, the cat's out of the bag!

Yeah, he kinda does remind me of Starbuck too. I may have to remember that too. He looks excellent. I cant wait to start my own. Im in the process of making a NJO line of figs myself. Master Luke is first up. ( but only because those are the only peices that I had on hand) ;D its just near impossible to find decent pics of the characters.

I looked up Starbuck (never really watched Battlestar Galactica, the original), and you're both right, the ressemblance of the jacket is almost uncanny.

I can't wait to get to my Luke; I think I'm going to use the artist rendition on the cover of Force Heretic I. Reason is, I like the whole New Jedi look, as opposed to the prequel era implication that all Jedi wear brown robes, etc. (though I know Luke does wear this sort of attire ceremoniously, I think his field dress would be slightly more practical.) This adds a bit more variety to the designs, as I'll be making several Jedi figs for my NJO line. At the same time, I don't want to just add a few snippets here and there to the already established black ROTJ outfit, as cool as it is.

I know, isn't it ridiculous how hard it is to get source photos? The best sources I've found, though, have been the Japanese covers of the books. Type in a google search of "new jedi order japanese covers" and you should come up with theForce.net's page dedicated to the art.

I'm looking forward to see what you do with that Pilot Jaina too -- the added articulation looks like it will be a wonderful touch, and I haven't seen anyone use the VOTC Leia head before (though it certainly looks girlish enough to work).  Very cool indeed!

You know, the eyes gave me a world of trouble. It took some "stamping" of paint, using a toothpick with a slightly truncated tip for the irises, while I used my very fine tip brust to paint the whites in. In addition to brown irises, it's not visible, but I also put little black pupils in the middle of the brown using a pin tip. I had to touch the eyes up a little by adding some flesh tone to either the top or bottom, so Han didn't look so doll-face, wide-eyed. Definitely a nerve-wrecking process for me.

I'm glad you guys like how it turned out though!

Here's a POTF2 Red 5 X-Wing that I'm converting into Jaina Solo's XJ-3 X-Wing from the New Jedi Order. First, I gutted out the electronics (I hated to see them go.. maybe sometime, when I'm more electronically savvy, I'll be able to re-connect the lights to a new battery power source), as well as the permenant R2-D2 and Luke bust, with a little help from Han:

So far, I've added some "details" to the cockpit, although they're not accurate. I just wanted there to be more depth to the controls and stuff than some rinky-dinky decals. There are some styrene strips awaiting painting, some wires on the rear wall, and a make-shift flight stick that I made from a piece of the ROTS Gran senator's blaster:

I forgot to photograph the inside-inside, to show how I fixed everything up to accomodate a full 3 3/4 pilot after removing the bust of Luke. I basically used a dremel cutting tool on some parts to make more room, remove big chunks of plastic, etc. and dremel-grinded the excess and rough edges down as best as I can (it's a sloppy job, it looks like.) I added styrene platforms for Han to sit on, so he didnt fall through and get lost inside the starfighter's hull!:

I also took out that sad-excuse for an R2 unit (really, just the dome.) and added more room and such for a full 3 3/4 scale R2:

The hardest parts seem to be over! Now that's team work, guys; high five!:

More updates on the XJ-3 X-Wing for my Jaina custom (WIP.) First, you can see that I finished painting the interior. Like I said before, not accurate, but I thought that it'd give some environmental life to the cockpit that the dull, cartoony details couldn't:

Hey, thanks everyone for your comments, especially on the Han custom as I thought he just got lost amidst all the updates. It's all very appreciated!

Lestat, I haven't painted the exterior quite yet, though I am going to remove all the decals (decals are neat, but sometimes tacky :/) and paint the entire exterior a glossy white, as that's what Jaina's XJ-3 was supposed to be painted in the New Jedi Order book Rebel Dream (or Stand?).

I think I will be picking up some acrylic spray to quicken the process, which brings me to my question: is there such a thing? I looked around Wal-Mart's craft section and couldn't find any spray acrylics, and I went to their designated paint/spray paint section, and the one brand that stood out to me was Krylon's FUSION paints, which are apparently made for plastic.

Any thoughts, folks?

Again, thanks for the great feedback!

I've never used the Fusion paints myself, but I've gotten mixed reviews for them. the majority of the reviews were bad. Id suggest testing the paint on something first. I'd hate for you ruin all your hard work by using the wrong paint.

Anybody else had any luck with these paints?

Post by: BrentS on April 17, 2006, 05:08 PM
I asked about Acrylic Fusion awhile back (it may have even been over at Galactic Hunter), the general consensus was that the spray acrylics don't work that well (on figures).  They may work on vehicles.

I've had some success with using an airbrush with acrylic paints.  I painted up a custom Gunship and sprayed on much of the blue parts using an airbrush.
Title: Re: Jaina's XJ-3 X-Wing WIP (interior paint update) 4/16/06
Post by: hyouriittai on April 17, 2006, 05:10 PM
An airbrush would be ideal, but alas, I don't have the money for one yet. (I'd rather get a decent one with a compressor, than one of those cheesy aersol can airbrushes).

What sorts of spray acrylics are out there? Really, my main concern is the paint being plastic-safe.

I tried to post this earlier but the computer was fighting me for some reason. Games workshop makes white spray on primer which works very well for plastics. I used them to repaint a couple of evolutions sand troopers and it worked out great. I use their spray primer for any project that uses alot of white (I also used them for a Captain Britain I did a while back). You should be able to buy a can at the Games Workshop store at the mall. The cans are usually under the shelf with the smaller paints. If you don't have access to one you might be able to get the spray primer from their website  GamesWorkshopsite (http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=List_Models&code=300810&orignav=300810&GameNav=300810) I hope this helps, they have gray spray primer as well as white.

Well, you can get a decent aorbrush set with a compressor in the model section at Wally World. I think its about 80 bucks, but it is nice. Hey, there is always lay away. I already had a previous compressor, so I bought one of the 20 dollar airbrushes, that is pretty much what I use on all my customs.

Since I customise on the cheap, I get just about everything from walmart. The paint I use is acrylic craft paint watered down. The Airbrush kit came with instructions on how to do so. The aresol can isnt a pain to work with at all. Its roughly the same as using a can of spray paint. And its very useful to practice with.

I also got a 20 dollar dremmel from walmart too. ;D If nothing else, its definately something to look into.

Here are some new WIP shots of my Jaina Solo from New Jedi Order. I used the cover girl head, despite all of my instincts telling me to save it for my Mara customs, though I trimmed the hair to make it about Jaina length and painted it a dark brown, along with her eyebrows. I also gave her flesh the same tone I used on my Han, and brown irises (maybe they were already brown?) just because I had to paint over em, anyway.

I hope the face paint isnt too messy. I was having some problems.

Title: Re: Jaina Solo - New Jedi Order - (4/20/06)
Post by: hyouriittai on April 20, 2006, 05:35 PM
Ah, I knew someone would notice it. That was one of my ventures when I was exploring the different options for a Jaina head. I hadn't received my GI Joe 3 pack yet (two weeks overdue!) and I was seeing alot of Mara customs pop up using the cover girl head that I intended for Jaina. So, I took the notoriously hideous Pregnant Padme head and cut off her braid, and began sculpting Jaina-esque hair out of epoxy putty. It was such a pain, cos it kept sticking to my fingers, and when I got done working on one part, I'd look and discover that I messed up the last portion I worked on while holding the head.

It started to look good, but I decided that I'd use it for another custom sometime down the road, as I think that the covergirl head, with a little trimming of the hair and some repainting, looked pretty good for my Jaina. The hair is also removable, I found out, so when I do other Jainas, it'll be very convenient to do some hair swaps

I shouldn't have superglued the hair down, though, because without it I could fit her head into an X-Wing Luke helmet, which I could easily sculpt some hair onto, spilling out of the opening and such. Oh well!

Now, I just need some suggestions as to what head I'll use for Mara. I was thinking of a Scarlett head, maybe, though she doesnt have the curly hair that Mara has. Hm..

A little filler piece, as I work out some articulation kinks in my Jaina custom. My NJO line is still going, just needed a little breather, lol. Here's a preview of an upcoming figure: Bey'hurr.

All I can say about him right now is that he is connected somehow to my  Rho One-Three-Eight fan fiction. (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=30&Number=1783569&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#1783569) I wasn't sure what "class" to make him; I figured he was really meant for close range combat (you can't see all of it in the first picture, but he wields a KOTOR-esque vibro-sword). For now, for reasons that will be revealed in later fan fiction, he will be called a "Mandalorian Son."

Can't wait to see him in color ;)

Clone Hunter-  Yeah, those knee pads are a little bulky, and square, huh? I was aiming for something that wasn't just a repainted Boba Fett or Jango, so I thought that some styrene armor would make him stand out a bit more. Incidentally, I thought that the knee pads were tacky when I cut them out, but after putting them on they kind of grew on me. (Or maybe it's the fact that when you glue em on, they're pretty much there for good. :P) But thanks for the constructive criticism.  ;D

Kit Fisto-  The head I used is from the Ultimate Soldier XD (I think?) line: Battle at the Bulge. He's one of the airborne figures I think. The .. neck..sock.. thing, I thought, was really cool and would work well for someone who wears a helmet. I'm actually pretty stoked on this figure.

The rest of the recipe is as follows:

Helmet- Custom Glassman cast
Mantle - Part of Palpatine (ROTS) 'cloak'
Upper arms- Battle of the Bulge line
Middle arm - odds and ends, mostly Elite Force base
Gauntlets - Styrene and odds and ends
Hands - Evo Clone
Torso - Jango (escape from Kamino?)
Kama - Evo Clone
Belts - Saga Boba Fett
Pelvis - Saga Boba Fett
Upper Legs - Saga Boba Fett
Lower Legs - Saga AT-AT driver (with filler)
Feet - Saga Boba Fett

Armor plates - Sheet styrene

Man that is looking sweet very impressive use of parts I'm looking forward to seeing him complete.

For the knee armour when I was looking at them I thought that matybe if they were rounded at the bottom and the edges sanded on an angle they may look less bulky.

Thanks, Ron. I thought of rounding them off myself, too, but I don't know! There's just something I like about the random square shape, like they were "pieced" together from some random parts, like droid joints or something. The character's era is post Original Trilogy, so I kind of feel that it's a look that abides by its time frame. Though, I havent done a thing to it since i took those pics, so I'll definitely consider the advice.

Thanks again!

Thats looking really good so far Hyo, I have to agree, for the armor that Mandalores are famous for, they nees something better than soft shoes. This guy need boots.
Otherwise, off to a great start.
I dont mind the knee pads. They are different, and if you knee someone, they are a weapon.
I'd keep em.

WOW! Hang on let me pick my jaw up again, thats been happening a lot lately, I really should look in to that at some point.

This is an excellent piece of work. I have no idea how you got all those parts to fit together but that is amazing. Ive contemplated getting that head myself. There is another one that has that same neck joint but without the collar peice. I think it comes with the other tanker guy. The problem is I wouldnt know what to use them for once I got them.

I cant wait to see this one finished. My mando is still just peices and a promise right now. Ive been blocked on what to do with it, its kind of embarrassing seeing all of these great Mando customs ive seen lately. :-[
