Title: TLC "Training on the Falcon" Battle Pack
Post by: Muftak on July 14, 2008, 06:47 PM
In a QnA over at Sandtroopers (http://www.sandtroopers.com/smf/index.php?topic=5183.msg195185#msg195185), Habro confirmed there will be a Battle Pack this fall featuring Luke, Ben, Threepio and Artoo specifically to go along with the BMF. All are repacks.

So what are we looking for? I'm figuring the POTJ Ben (since it was the robeless variety), VOTC Luke (with POTF2 helmet), VOTC Artoo (with the interchangable panel again so he can "plug in" to the ship) and probably ROTS Threepio (since the more appropriate Saga2 Threepio will already be out in the legends line.)

Would be nice if they could fit in a VOTC Leia too to bring this home as a 5-figure pack, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

They COULD throw in a VOTC Kenobi without the cloak.  That POTJ version won't be able to actually sit in the Falcon.

I'm just glad I don't have an inkling to buy it...  All repacks sounds just right for the kiddies. :P

Neither can the VOTC. :P  I already put him in and was shocked to re-discover that he doesn't have articulated knees.

To date does any Old Ben Kenobi have articulated knees?

I know a lot of people will likely pass on this set, but it is probably a good idea to put out there with the BMF.  You get Han/Chewie with the Falcon, and can finish out the "group" with this battle pack.  Like others said, it would be nice to include Leia as well.  I wouldn't mind seeing the VOTC version of Luke, R2, and Obi-Wan (and I guess the Endor Throne 3PO), or if they really wanted to get spiffy they could do the "painted" version of the Spirit Obi from the OTC line and the true repainted R4-G9 version of R2 that many people have asked for.  I sort of wanted to get another VOTC Luke (and Leia, for that matter), so depending on the rest of the pack, I might pick this up.

I think that this is an excellent idea for a battle pack.  It will help satisfy the kiddies with figures for their Millenium Falcon.  And it will potentially save slots in the Basic Figure lineup for more collector oriented characters.

It is a neat idea for a BP but it's missing one thing - bad guys.

If they do a Tatooine setting?  Perhaps an Evolutions Sandtrooper (clean w/ black pauldron), but we'd probably get a Garindan.

I wouldn't mind a Garindan figure. That's one I've always regretted never picking up at retail. :-\

Except we are getting a new Tatooine Ben in the ANH wave, correct? Unneccesary overlap there (esp. since the new one will probably have knee joints.)

I am really hoping for a VOTC Luke here. I have always been a champion of the figure, and with a different fabric for his tunic it could wind up working better than the original (also might be even more poofy, but I'm trying to be optimistic.) At the same time, I would totally buy the set if it came with 30AC Luke with a different headsculpt. I just pray it is not EB Luke!

As far as the bad guys, the biker BPs (and the new Clone Wars BPs) don't include an enemy to fight either, so there is precedent.

I'm fully expecting Luke, Ben, Leia, 3PO, and R2.  Han and Chewie come with the Falcon already and these 5 are the only other Falcon passengers from ANH.

Seems like the most likely to me anyway...  it would be nice if they could toss in VOTC Leia or Early Bird Leia if they do end up including her since we don't see those very often.

The redundancy in old Bens could be explained away by the Falcon passenger version being cloakless, and the regular carded version could be "Death Star Duel" or some other version.  Technically a "different" outfit  8)

Pics at RS (http://www.rebelscum.com/sdcc08/Hasbro/multipacks/image11.asp)

Looks like TSC Luke, VOTC Ben, 3PO, R2-D2, and a bunch of pack-in goodies (gas masks, blast helmet, storage boxes)... although it's pretty much stuff we already have.  Definitely just a set for Mom/Dad/Grandma/Grandpa/etc to grab to go with the Falcon little Johnny is getting for Christmas.

Again, I can't help but wonder why there are only 4 figures shown... cost saving measure or was a fig missing for the photo?   ???

Yeah, I'm guessing it comes down to wanting to keep the "$19.99 Battle Pack" price point more than they wanted to keep the BPs at 5 figures and then raising the price.

I guess, 4 figures for $20 still isn't terrible compared to the $8 basic figs.   :P
Title: Re: TLC "Millenium Falcon Passengers" Battle Pack
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on July 24, 2008, 12:51 AM
At least the Hoth patrol got slipped in with 5 figures as the phase out of the old school BP's. As long as they pack in some gear I am fine with 4 good figures. Often times one of the figures usually sucks and is useless. Five perfect figures in BP's are few and far between anyway.
Title: Re: TLC "Millenium Falcon Passengers" Battle Pack
Post by: Jesse James on July 24, 2008, 01:13 AM
And the fact they're almost always repacks...  That really makes this "crunch" suck that much harder.  They're not exactly tooling us a bunch of new stuff for them, so I'm a bit frustrated to see them cutting costs in an area that already is cut as far as costs, and is the kind of thing Hasbro claims "Helps them make the new stuff that's obscure"...  That's annoying.

Yep.
As long as they truly refresh them with some kind of new offering I am cool with it. Hopefully it's he sucky figure that gets the axe. In the case of the bunker set all of the figures used in there are all up to par sculpts. No action feature figures to be found which is a good thing. In the case of this set the really should have ditched the boxes and gave a VOTC Luke or the TAC MF one for that matter.

Not an absolutely terrible pack.  The figure versions aren't terrible.  And the pack in accessories are actually well thought out.  Anybody else notice the rebreather masks from the Mynock hunt?  Plus the blastshield helmet, bacta tourniquet and cargo containers.

Well Hasbro was able to throw in 3 of the figures I wanted but despite what I said before I will be passing. I figure I can wait till a new Obi comes out and the 3po and R2 I am getting from the Disney StarTours exclusive BP anyways when my sister goes to Disney World next month. So $20 for a Obi that will be upgraded and some accesories is not worth it. Nice set but it doesnt interest me anymore.

Yeah, I intended on likely picking this one up - but now I'm not so sure.  Don't get me wrong, I think its great for kids and/or new collectors who just grabbed the Falcon - but with a new Obi-Wan rumored to be coming towards the end of this year, and the fact that they didn't include a VOTC Luke or Leia in the pack, it makes it easier for me to pass on it.  It doesn't look like a bad BP overall though.

It's nice for people who have not purchased the figures previously.  I could be tempted, and I also think an Empire Strikes Back themed one would do well with a post-duel Luke and some other figures along that line.
Title: Re: TLC "Millenium Falcon Passengers" Battle Pack

I'll pass on this set. I already have all of those figures. But it's a good idea for those who don't. And with it being a battle pack, it's a bit cheaper as well.

So long as this isn't overproduced so as to clog up shelf space in place on NEW stuff, then I'd say it's a good idea to make this.

Perhaps we can confirm the 5 fig to 4 fig downgrade with a Q&A question to Hasbro.

I wonder if there might end up being some sort of additional pack-in with these.  All the other future sets seem to still have 5 figures in them, why would this one be shorted?

How about VOTC Leia... throw her in Hasbro.  You know you want to.

Or, if it's an accessory, what could they include that would be "new"?  Any ideas?

Above 3PO are the Mynonk Hunt (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/ActionFigures/cinemascenes/mynockhunt/cf.html) gas masks and next to Ben are the crate from the TSC R2 (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/html/tsc/010.html) and the medical tourniquet from the Bespin Luke (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/html/otc/otc26.html). The Ben looks to be the VOTC version (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/html/otc/vintage/votc01.html) without the robe and has the POTF2 blast-shield helmet (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/html/potf2/freezeframe/17.html) under his arm.

Beats me, I don't have anywhere to put that thing, and I'm not spending $150 on a training remote - but I assume what you're getting at is that it would have been easy for Hasbro to put one in this ultra-appropriate location.

True, the training remote would help with this set being its namesake and all but we're talking Hasbro here -they included gas masks accessories for a "training themed" set .  ::)

I think this was intended to be a battle pack/accessory set designed expressly with owners of the new Falcon in mind.

OR that since a lot of us have the new Falcon, you can easily use this scene with it.

I think its funny that they still call something like this a "Battle Pack"...they should call it a Snoozer Pack.

I think they want to save a standalone training remote for a new version of ANH Luke.  Include the remote, a new blast shield helmet and lightsaber along with a new sculpt of Luke, and you manage to make something fresh for say, 2011.

It doesn't really seem like this pack is aimed at collectors as much as it's aimed at kids getting the new Millenium Falcon (if any kids actually got that behemoth). It makes sense that they could get—in one shot—most of the major characters that hang out on the Falcon, as well as a bunch of accessories. I think it's great for that purpose.

I'm not buying it, though.

I agree. Although this BP is quite redundant for us, it's a great move on Hasbro's part for those who haven't been collecting for as long as we've been.

I saw this at Target yesterday. The accessories included are definitely really cool, and it made the set tempting, but i just couldn't justify $22 plus tax for three figures I already have and a Ben Kenobi that's a turd compared to the one coming in Wave 5. But it's out there, for anyone who's interested in filling up their Falcon.

I think it's a cool companion piece to the Falcon.  I really like the version of C-3PO that they used, even if that is a ROTJ Threepio.  The other figures are okay.  Not great, but okay.  And the accessories really add to the Falcon interior.  I like how they even included one gas mask that's specifically for Chewbacca.

This BP seems like a return to the diorama era of jabba palace and chalmun cantina from potf2

Following this style of hard card deco they could create a batle pack of Toshe station, repacking Biggs from TAC, making a kitbash from a Luke with binoculars and creating Camie and Fixer to complete the group.

But I prefer some day they built these medium dioramas with plastic for the floor and card for the scenario
like the potf2 halves of dueling Ben Kenobi, Vader and Jedi Luke.
