Title: Name a one hit wonder thread!!!
Post by: Lady Jaye on June 13, 2003, 11:38 AM
I remember starting one of these at the sucm I think, and figured it needs to be done again!! ;D So name one band and their one hit song!!!!! Try to keep it to only one band per reply so that everyone can name one!!!! And anything that somg meant to you, if anything

The Divinyls: I Touch Myself

Now some of you downunder may say, what I may be talking about, but here in the states that was there one big hit. They may had a following before and after, but it was this song that made them a name here. Anyways I love this song, and wish I could get a copy w/o having to buy the whole album.

One of the favorites from way back in my youth:

867-5309 by Tommy Tutone   8)

Never heard of yours though Brent!   ::)  I think the one "hit" in question should at least be something that made it into Billboard's Top 10 or so...   :-*  EDIT:  OK, I just looked it up in my Music Bible here at the office, and at least you apparently came pretty close there B.  It hit #18 way back in 1977 (yawn).  But you could at least try to pick one that the rest of the gang (who's not fast approaching 40) can recognize and appreciate also, eh?!?   ;D

Joan Osborne - One of us
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
CCCP - American Soviets

That was funny. I didn't recognize the name or song either. Wow are ya that old Morgy??? ;)

Anyways my next artist's song is still one of my faves, no matter what people say about the artist. This was and still is one hell of a dance song, they play it at the clubs everytime I go.

Vanilla Ice: Ice Ice Baby

In fact I still can sing a good portion of the lyrics. :o

Yeah, yeah.  It ain't disco, so don't go crappin' on me punk.  It is played all the stinking time up here for some reason, I probably hear it twice a week on the radio.  Better than Tommy Tutone for heaven's sake.  BTW, the 867 exchange is in the town where my inlaws used to live.  That number exists, in Canada, at least.

Who sang Eye of the Tiger (from the Rocky movie)?  Would that be more suitable to the age grouping here?  Can Baby Matt provide me with a suitable range of years :-*  Now go vacuum something Matt.

Lady Jaye,
yup, I'm that old.  Not quite the Bob and Dale show, but not far off (and I swear there's at least one other guy here that's older than me, but can't remember his name). ;)

Wow are ya that old Morgy??? ;)

Yeah, he's that old and then some!  Well, just about anyways...  But not as OLD as Dale or Bob just yet...   ;)

I'll add another great early MTV video classic in here:

Mickey by Toni Basil
Title: Re: Name a one hit wonder thread!!!
Post by: Lady Jaye on June 13, 2003, 01:08 PM
Well don't worry Morgy, we all can't be young if we remember actual MTV videos!!! ;D Oh and if there is a video from the song, then it's proably a good indication that we should know it. ;D

ANd JediMac, that is one hell of a classic, love that song.

And I will add the next group and song. They may have some more albums and popular songs, but this is the one that made them explode, and the only one that I remember.

Devo: Whip It
Title: Re: Name a one hit wonder thread!!!
Post by: Morgbug on June 13, 2003, 01:30 PM
whip it!  whip it good! da na na na na, bleer bleer.

Sorry.

Walk like an Egyptian, The Bangles.  I don't remember anything else by them on the radio and certainly nothing else that popular.  I thought that's probably a band Matt loved growing up. :-*

Brent hates this one.  ;D

Dead or Alive: You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).
Nena: 99 Luftballons.
M: Pop Musik.

My favorite-
Carl Douglas: Kung Fu Fighting.

Ok, I have a few corrections.

1. Vanilla Ice was NOT a one hit wonder.  Ice Ice Baby may have been the only single you heard, but he did have a few platinum hits before he went the way of the Dodo. One was "Play that Funky Music". Another popular track was Havin a Roni, and WHO could forget the theme song from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2....NINJA RAP!!! He was the Eminem of his day....

V.I.P is in the hizzy.

2. Joan Osbourne had another big radio hit...."Right hand Man" before "One of us". So technically....she's a 2 hit wonder.

I nominate these one hit wonders:

Lou Bega "Mambo Number 5"
Skee Lo "I wish I was taller"

Better than Ezra "Good"

Blind Melon "No Rain"

Green Jelly "Three little Pigs"

Wheatus "Teenage Dirtbag"

Seattle's Own Harvey Danger with "Flagpole Sitta" (Even though they had 2 good albums, that was the only hit)

Sisqo and that damn "Thong Song" (Yes, I realize he had hits with Dru Hill, but they don't count)

Last but not least....

Len with "Steal My Sunshine"

Yeah, yeah.  It ain't disco, so don't go crappin' on me punk.

Speaking of which, how 'bout If I Can't Have You by Yvonne Elliman    I'm sure that's one of your personal faves, right B?   :-*

Quote
Who sang Eye of the Tiger (from the Rocky movie)?  Would that be more suitable to the age grouping here?

Nope, that one sure ain't gonna work Brent.  Didn't you watch Rocky IV too?  Survivor sings the #2 smash hit Burning Heart in that one!   :P  Then they've also got I Can't Hold Back, High On You, and The Search Is Over.  Get with the Survivor program man!  I'm president of their Fan Club and could hook you up with a free subscription to our weekly newsletter if you'd like.  Catch you up on them a little.  Just LMK...   ;)

Quote
Can Baby Matt provide me with a suitable range of years  :-*

Any really would do fine.  Just keep it mainstream, and not any of that bizzaro stuff you Canuckleheads (only) listen too!   :-*

Quote
Now go vacuum something Matt.

Now that's just mean.  I'm going to remember that one B!   >:(

OK, one more contribution here.  The all-time biggest one hit wonder:

Macarena by Los Del Rio   ;D
Title: Re: Name a one hit wonder thread!!!
Post by: JoshEEE on June 13, 2003, 01:54 PM
Macarena reminded me of another one.

Tag Team, Back again...Check it to wreck it, let's begin
Party on Party people let me hear some noise
DC's in the house, jump jump, rejoice
Cause there's a party over here, a party over there
So waive your hands in the air and shake your derrier
These three words when you're gettin busy.....

WHOOOMP, There it is!

(by the way...they are the only one hit wonder I know that spawned an imitation one hit wonder)

WHOOOT, There it is.

Sorry about that vacuum comment, TBM, really, I am ;D :-*

Now, how about addressing those that Josh posted.   ???
They have me more than a bit confused.

Don't remember the disco song you listed, can't even hum it in my head.

I DO know the songs in Dale's list.  I wonder why ;)

Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting, they was fast as lightning...

Really cool memories of Christmas morning and getting my Kung Fu grip vintage (not then) GI Joe commander with life-like hair (who I still have).  I love the MOtt's Clamato juice commercial that uses it. ;D

Walk like an Egyptian, The Bangles.  I don't remember anything else by them on the radio and certainly nothing else that popular.

Damn Brent, you really suck at this game dude.  Next thing you'll be listing a Beatles or Elvis song in here...   ::)  Ever heard of Billboard #2 Manic Monday or #1 Eternal Flame (among several others)?  Sheesh.  You old timers...   :-X

Oh, indeed.  Meesa like some Susanna Hoffs!  Muy delicioso!   8)

Not sure if I'd go as far as to call him that era's Eminem now...   :P  But Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go! was definitely a classic and one of the finest soundtrack performances of the time!   ;D

Not sure about some of those others though Josh.  I'm equally confused on a few...

But your last contribution, leads me to my next one hit smash:

The Tootsee Roll by 69 Boyz

To the left, to the left.  To the right, to the right...   :P

Good one Carrie!  But I'm a little surprised you've dropped the ball here and didn't jump on the Vanilla Ice bit with me again!  You must be mellowing in your old age...   :D

I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow

The song's a bigger hit than the band. I've heard this one covered a lot.

Livin' la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin

Please God, no more.

Election Day by Arcadia

Okay, technically Duran Duran, but their name ain't on the album cover.

One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head

Actually had to look up this dude's name. Remember Chess? My neither.

Amadeus by Falco

This guy's dead. No chance at redemption here.

I'm Turning Japanese by The Vapors

Everyone's favorite song about masturbation. ...I really think so.

Are you kidding? I was in high school around the time of Vanilla Ice, and he was HUGE for awhile there. Him and MC Hammer. Then, that fateful night on Arsenio Hall, he LITERALLY became a big loser. We all were laughing at him on the school bus the next day, and that year Cool as Ice came out and sunk his career.

The only difference I see between him and Eminem is Eminem hasn't fallen yet. Give him another couple of years.

As for the rest of my list.....if you have Kazaa or Morpheus, go download them. I guarantee that even if you don't know them by name, you've probably heard most of the songs I listed at one point or another.  ;D

And now to more questions.

Didn't Ricky martin have another hit with that stupid "Shake your Bon Bon
song?  I remember that one used to bug me....and he had another single "She Bangs" that did pretty well.

Falco also had Vienna Calling..... and DER KOMMISAR (which was a huge hit).

Don't you remember?

"Don't turn around...wuh oh,
Der Kommisar's in town...wuh oh....."

Come on....that was a hit.  ;D
Title: Re: Name a one hit wonder thread!!!
Post by: Morgbug on June 13, 2003, 02:28 PM
Huh, clearlly I've never listened to the same radio stations as Matt did.  I was unaware that the Bangles were more than eye candy/one hit wonder.  I stand corrected.

I get the funny feeling there's a chunk of regionality to this stuff too.  69 Boyz?  Who the hell are they?  I swear, the more I go through this thread, the less I know about the absolute garbage you people are familiar with ;)

Bay City Rollers?  Saturday Night?

Check on The Knack.  Good girls don't.  Probably not high on Billboard, but it received pretty good airplay.  Much better song too.

Please God, no more.

Agreed.  Sure seems like that was Ricky's one big hoorah, but the music auditor in me feels the need to point out his several other hits:  The Cup of Life, Nobody Wants to Be Lonely (w/ Aguilera), She Bangs, and the unforgettable super hit Shake Your Bon-Bon!  I'm president of Ricky's Fan Club too, so LMK if you'd like our free weekly newsletters as well John!   8)

Quote
Amadeus by Falco

This guy's dead. No chance at redemption here.

I was inclined to point out his other hit Vienna Calling here, but it only hit #18, so I'll let this one slide...   ;)

My next song:
Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes

Honorable Mention to:
Supersonic by J.J. Fad   8)

I just don't think they're that comparable since Eminem seems to generally be more respected throughout the rap community, has already had a much longer shelf life, and has had a lot more hit songs, including a couple with Dre...

Quote
Falco also had Vienna Calling..... and DER KOMMISAR (which was a huge hit).

The Der Kommissar song that we're all familiar with was actually sung by After the Fire, which hit #5 back in 1983.  Falco's version never charted here in the States, though he's the one who actually co-wrote this song...

My next one:

You Light Up My Life by Debby Boone   :-[   ;D   :-[  It was #1 for TEN weeks back in 1977, after all...  I'm sure Brent knows this one pretty well...   :P

I don't know if Eminem is respected by other rappers outside Dr. Dre's circle. I mean, you never hear him "Beefing" with anyone besides pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Augilera and Moby. I heard he has something against Ja Rule now.....but he's just as big a poster boy as Vanilla Ice ever was.

He's just lasted longer.....that's all I'm giving him.

That's the whole idea DSJ. Remember my favorite decade ever is the 80's,a nd music being one of the main reasons. So anything to get people talking 80's, where alot of one hit wonders came from, sadly to say.

Ok guys really try to keep it to one band an one song, that way we can give eveyone a chance, but you know some fo the mulitple replies I don't even know so I guess it's ok. Thnaks Jedi Mac for trying to get a lil order around hea.  :-* That was for you. ;)

Ok my next sond is again one of my faves and if I ever hear it on the radio I turn it so loud that everyone turns their heads.

AhaTake on me

I love that song, it's so freaking catchy.

Buzzzz. Sorry, Terrance Trent D'arby had another hit in the early 90's with "She Kissed Me".

It was a song about someone kissing him "There".

It was Controversial at the time, even.   :)

Tainted Love  Soft Cell ???

Here's my "actors should never sing" one-hit wonder contributions:

Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time
Patrick Swayze - She's Like the Wind
Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself
Don Johnson - Heartbeat

Two more corrections (Both Matt's entries)

Quote
Here's my "actors should never sing" one-hit wonder contributions:

Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time

Eddie Murphy actually had ANOTHER big single that was on the radio quite a bit in the mid 90's, with none other than the King of Pop himself. The song?  Whazzupwitu.  It was actually in the top 10 singles for awhile when it was released.  The album cover was baby blue with red hearts all over it.  Scary.....

Quote
Kris Kross:  Jump

Many people actually remember Kris Kross for the SECOND single (Warm it up), and some may even remember the third single off that album "I missed the bus" (which borrowed so heavily from Young MC's "Principle's office" that many folks accused them of stealing the lyrics.

Their second album featured a single "Alright" as well as "The Bomb", but neither got them as much play as the 1st album did.

That's my totally Krossed out update.  :)

How many seasons of Idol before no one cares anymore?  For me....it was 1.

 ;D

Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon (sp?)

Not true, he also had a hit with Lawyers, Guns and Money.  He might of had more, but those two are the most played on classic rock stations.

See now, I think some of us are having a difference in opinion as to what constitutes a hit Mike, 'cause I'd say Brent's very much right on with that Warren Zevon song.  Lawyers, Guns and Money never even charted, which I think is totally necessary in order to be termed a "hit".  This is the same argument I would make against Josh's last two corrections of my entries.  I think if a song never even sees the pages of a Billboard magazine - it just don't count!  Despite receiving some limited airplay in some markets.

That's just my definition of a "hit" though, but it's the generally accepted definition most of the time too (like when you see "One Hit Wonder" books in the stores and such...   ;)

My next entry:

Gary Numan's Cars   8)

I have never heard his other song, so I can't really complain.  I don't think though, as Matt said, it charted all that well.  Though I've resoundingly proven not to be an authority in this game.

Stuck in the Middle  Stealers Wheel.

Again, an oldie but I suspect with fairly universal airplay?

WHA'?!?  OK, I looked it up...  Hit #6 WAAAAYYYY back in early 1973.   ::)  I'll tell you what who the "oldie" around here is...   :-*

Guess I'll let it slide, but c'mon Brent - you gotta pick some songs that the rest of us were at least around for!  I suppose if I was listening to the radio when I was 2 1/2 I might've heard this one...   :-\

Next song:

Informer by Snow...   :P

Damn, I just can't win :(  I think I know something and I get shot down just like that.  At least allow me to boost my ego a little bit here, Matt  :-*

Snow?  Snow falls on the ground.  Sheesh Matt, I may be old but at least the stuff I list gets airplay.

Something perhaps from the years when Matt had teeth...

Echo Beach Martha and the Muffins. ;D

Sorry Mike!   :-*  But hell, your ego should still be fine, 'cause you've got the most bitchin' pansy dancin' Spiderman anywhere around!   8)

Echo Beach Martha and the Muffins. ;D

Nuh-uh Brent...   ::)  Only song that ever charted from that group was Black Stations/White Stations, which rang in at a paltry #63 back in 1984.  But at least you've moved up a decade finally for us, though we still have no clue what the hell you're talking about!   :-*  But I can see why - they're a Canucklehead group, eh?!   ;)

My next stab at it:
Pump Up the Volume by M/A/R/R/S    8)

My goodness.  It's amazing we ever hooked up to trade Matt.  Check the Canadian charts on Martha et al.

You may not know any of my bands but I sure haven't a clue as to the bands you mention either.  And I have a really hard time believing Hooters plays those bands, so I'm starting to question your choices in radio stations.

BTW, I thought you'd be familiar with the Stealers Wheel song because Jeff Healy redid a version that had considerable air play.  NOt a hit by any stretch, but it was out there and not that long ago.

Carry on wayward son Kansas.

Oh, I know they probably had other songs, but I can't think of any that were popular.

Uh...  Ever hear of a little ditty called Dust in the Wind...?!  Pretty sure that one constitutes a "hit".  Yeah, Happy Birthday anyways Canada.   :-*

Ok, here's one that has a 99.9957346% chance of not getting shot down by Matt.

Because I got High by Afroman.  And I heard somewhere he's happy with his 15 minutes and found God and became a priest or something.

Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-a-Lot.
Although he's had a lot of success behind the scenes.

Speaking of actors who shouldn't sing... How about the cover of

You Sexy Thing - Hot Chocolate
