Fresh on the heels of my Tantive IV ( @ Jedidefender ) (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=12593.0) display and Rotating Display ( @ Rebel Scum ) (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1922213&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=186&fpart=1#1922213), here is my latest creation, Hoth Invasion. This is my second display completed using my standardized display sizing (8" x 16" x 8"). Hope you all enjoy.
Again the construction process was more or less the same as what I did for my large rotating display. I again am using minimagstands for this display, the metal floor is buried below several layers of laytex paint and spray snow.
To create the cave I took large chunks of styrofoam and glued them to the walls & ceiling (I added a ceiling to this display). Then I had some fun with the dremel - note when doing this have a vacume running to catch the huge mess it will make. Once I had the 'ice' cut how I wanted it, I used wall joint compound to coat the walls (smooth). Then a few layers of layex paint to get the color right. Finally I sprayed the whole thing down with spray snow (I put down a thin layer of elmers white glue down on the floor before spraying to keep the snow in place - I should have done this everywhere).
The 'cabling' running down the hallway is screen window tubing. I drilled three holes in the wall then ran twist ties through them to secure the 'cabling'. The twist ties were tightend from the back side.
I have posted some construction pictures as well as finished shots below. Enjoy.

Another great display. I love the idea of the dremmeled out styrofoam - brilliant! Thanks for the WIP shots because it does look messy.
I know why you are using the magnet stands but this shot made me laugh. My first reaction was ice skating and I thought maybbe it was a star wars Ice Capades Show. :)

In all seriousness, this is outstanding work. I can only hope my Gardulla's palace display comes out half this good!

I dig the realism on this small diorama. Need to make something to fill in the door ways with for picture sakes, but awesome job.

I agree, this is awesome... one of the best hoth scenes I've seen. Very, very well done. I might copy this method!
:)

Awesomeness!I can't see the Rotating one thoe. Can someone find out if I was banned or locked from Scum? :-[

You can also see it on my personal site starwars.creativedigitalnw.com (http://starwars.creativedigitalnw.com)
It is under dioramas in 4 parts (Endor in Winter, Throne Room, Imperial Hanger and Duel Platforms).
I can see where you could see the ice capades look of the stands, funny.
Thanks for the feed back.

This pic looks just like the hallway from ESB- great job! I love the fake snow.

Wow! Another Awsome piece.
You really have a great talent for creating these displays.
I can't wait to see whats next.

Thanks for all the feed back everyone. My next project will be "Endor Patrol". My biker scouts need a home, and a display to show case that VTSC Scout.
-
Nice Job man! I like the Snow effect on the wires! Keep up the good work :)
-
nice work. the snow detailing really looks good! it actually looks cold in there. i don't really like the old snow trooper, but it looks great in your set up!

I'm not the biggest fan of the POTF snowtrooper either but I is what I have. The newer saga versions are too hunched over for my taste (except the new saga 2006, just hard to justify getting more when I have 8 already). I'm really waiting for him to get the Vintage Collection Treatment.
For my Tantive IV display I just could not bring my self to use the POTF rebels, so I held out for the POTJ.
