Customizing Tips and Tricks / Hot Glue and Sculpey Problem
« on: July 8, 2009, 05:01 PM »
Hey all
I have created a generic figure torso using sculpey.  I created this piece and then made a 2-piece mold of it using silicone caulk like you buy at walmart.  Next, I injected hot melt glue into the silicone mold, put the mold together and out came my solid, hot melt torso i needed.

Ok, great. NOW, here is the part i need help with.  I want to sculpt new details onto this hot melt casting using super sculpey.  It sculpts onto the stuff great.  The only problem is that when i put the piece into my makeshift oven (cardboard box covered on the inside with tin foil with a hair dryer fed into the side), the sculpey cures, BUT the hot melt glue melts.  The curing temp of sculpey is 275 degrees F.  Hot melt glue is only like 135 deg. F.

So, therein lies the problem.  Can anyone think of a solution for my problem?  I've thought about using air-drying clay, but i bought some today and it sucks bad.  Well, it is the crayola brand stuff so i wasnt expecting much.  Are there any decent air drying polymer clays out there that are about like super sculpey?  I need fine details.

Please help!  Thanks!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Need some nakedness
« on: October 21, 2008, 04:08 PM »
Anybody out there (who hasnt already got perverted things in their head) got any clue about what figures may exist in 3 3/4" scale that have naked legs that are jointed at the knees?

I am making myself a template figure and it needs to be pretty much naked. I have the EU Anakin with blue tatoos for the torso. I believe i have the VOTC luke (tatooine) arms at home. A naked crotch is easy to come by. I just need a pair of legs that have no clothing on them.

Then i'm gonna need a naked woman as well, but I am working on the naked man template figure first.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Making Molds Cheap and Easy
« on: August 17, 2007, 11:08 AM »
Hey all!

Sorry I've been away so long but I've taken over the duties of Zookeeper/Admin at www.coreplanets.com (yeah, shameless plug, I know).

Anyways, I just had to let you all in on a new source material I've been using now that allows me to make great molds and it costs almost NOTHING hardly!  What is it you ask!?  None other than Hot Melt Glue!  All you need to do is create a wall around your part you want to cast (your master).  I do this with lego blocks on a lego base.  Now, I use a substance I found at walmart called 'Goo Gone Extreme' (its about 3-4 bucks for a very large container) and I douse the inside of my walls and the flooring with this stuff.  I also put this on my master as well.  What this stuff does is prevents the glue from actually sticking and bonding to the legos and master.  Hot melt glue is VERY potent in terms of sticking, mainly because hot melt glue is really liquid plastic and vinyl.

You'll need a glue gun for the next step, and these can range from 2 bucks to over 50 bucks for a really good one.  I have an el cheapo $1.97 pink glue gun I grabbed at wm and it works just fine.  I use high temp glue sticks (which I got a bag of these for 1.50 at wm too) and fill the 'box' you just made up.  Now, for bigger boxes, I suggest getting a bigger gun that will take a bigger glue stick.  Mainly because the short ones harden up faster and you have to constantly reload.

Now, you do just like you would in other molding situations and put the master about half way into the hot glue (REMEMBER TO DOUSE YOUR MASTER WITH THE GOO GONE!).  Put some tiny balls or something around the master as well halfway in so you have a locking device.  What I do is I have some of those mardi gras beaded necklaces that people throw in parades.  You can get them ultra cheap too.  I just tear off the beads and they are the perfect size.

Now wait till the glue has hardened back into the semi rubbery plastic form and douse the master, box, and top of the glue again with the goo gone.  Oh, and pull the beads out too.  You are done with them.

Now, shoot more glue on top of the master and glue mold.  Wait till it hardens, then seperate the two halves.  There, you have your mold!  If things are not coming apart, you need to use more goo gone.  Trust me, the hot glue will bond to your items without this stuff!  Its a real b*tch to get off too!

« on: August 28, 2006, 01:52 PM »
Can someone who knows how to measure tell me the precise (to the 1/16") measurements of a star wars card. One of the rectangular ones like potf2. I just need the length and width. Thanks!

(I'd do it myself but I dont have a card handy)

Star Wars Action Figures / Star Wars: Unlimited
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:13 PM »
Hey all
Sorry I dont post as much as I'd like to on here, but I was hoping you all could help me with something.  I'm doing a series of figures carded and need to come up with a catchy, cool sounding title for the series, like power of the jedi, power of the force, the clone wars, shadows of the empire, etc...
The line is gonna be almost totally EU.  No certain time period or anything, just anything and everything outside the movies.

Also, anybody know of an alternate name for 'expanded universe' that sounds good?  Thanks everyone.  :)

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Casting Pigments
« on: June 13, 2006, 04:45 PM »
OK, I've gotten all my supplies for molding and casting except the casting pigments to change the resin to a different color.  Its pretty expensive after looking through the different sites!  The cheapest I found was castin craft pigment at micromark for $33, plus like $9 for shipping.
http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=83094

So, is there any other way to change the color of your cast besides using these things?  I know it may be a long shot, but what about food coloring?
Also, glassman I believe stated earlier that he found some kind of pigment that worked at Lowes.  Can you tell me more about this like what it was called?  Thanks!  :)

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Adding Articulation?
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:24 PM »
Does anyone have a good turtorial about making elbow and/or knee articulation to figures that don't currently have articulation there?  I want to actually MAKE the articulation, not just cut off a knee cap of another figure and put it on mine, or something like that.

Thanks!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Female Figures List
« on: May 26, 2006, 11:42 AM »
Anybody got a master list of most of the 3 3/4" FEMALE figures that could be used for fodder?  I think it would be a good sticky post since there are far fewer female figures to use as fodder.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Wax Vs. Clay
« on: May 24, 2006, 01:57 PM »
After viewing conceptuk's website, I was amazed at the clarity of the details in his wax work.  He claims to use 'hasbro grade' wax, so is this available to the general public somehow?

I've always used clay to sculpt my stuff, and now that I've seen his, glassman's, and ben's stuff, I'm wondering if maybe wax is the way to go.  Which brand do you guys get?  It looks great for detail work.

Is it pretty soft or what?  I am just envisioning trying to make a figure out of candle wax in my head.  Is it somewhat like that?

Star Wars Action Figures / MicroForce
« on: May 23, 2006, 02:31 PM »
I've got some microforce figures coming to me to customize.  When I bought these, I'd just found out that there are 3 different microladies types (small, med, and large busts).

Is there only 1 microman size?

Also, now I see there is a microSISTER.  What is the difference here?  I need something like a micro-kid (male and female).  Do they make such a thing?

thanks

Site Feedback, Suggestions, and Help / just a suggestion
« on: May 23, 2006, 09:19 AM »
Just offering a suggestion to JD staff.  I was looking through the customs area and of course everyone that customizes has his/her own thread with their collection.  Then also, you have just posts that are customizing questions and advice.
Would it not be better to maybe have 2 customizing threads?  One for 'Customizers' Collections' and one for 'Customizing Questions and Answers'?  Just a thought!  :)

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Magnetic Articulation
« on: May 11, 2006, 04:12 PM »
Has anyone ever tried this?  If you cast a figure, put magnets into the casting of the different pieces and attach limbs and the head this way, instead of the pegs?  I just wonder if maybe it might be easier.

Thanks jedipurge for the idea on your other post btw!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Smooth-on vs. Micromark
« on: April 27, 2006, 12:09 PM »
In glassman's tutorial, he uses Smooth-Sil 920 from smoothon.com for one-piece molds ($26 for 16oz.).

For 2 piece molds, he uses micromark 4 hour one-to-one silicone rubber for the molds ($31.75 for 16oz.).

Glassman, have you ever used the smooth-sil to make your 2 piece mold instead of just the one piece mold?  Its cheaper in price for the same amount, so I didnt know if maybe it wasnt quite as good.  Thanks!
