From MisterPL over at GH
...and it's hot. LAVA hot.
A stylized illustration of Vader's helmet graces the upper right of the branding, and he looks pissed. If it's possible for him to make that mask frown, he's doing it.
The background is black with a golden Star Wars logo adorning the upper left. But the coolest - or should I say hottest - part of the new packaging is what's at the bottom of the trade dress; lava, lots and lots of spraying molten lava. It even illuminates Vader's helmet from below.
This is just the opposite of the Clone Wars packaging and should be an appropriate follow up to the OTC look. And given the composition of certain elements, it'll make a great bookend to the modern toy line.
So I did a little mockup of what he said...
What do you think?
-
What do I think? I think you should ask Deanpaul to do the mockup instead. That's what I think. :-*
Did John actually see the new card designs? If so, that's pretty cool. Lucky devil! Wonder if he saw anything else worthy of mention, like the cardBACK perhaps... 8)

Ouch! Slam the man for trying! I suppose you want a David Hasselhoff figure in the card! :P ;D
-
Let's see you try hotshot ::) :-*
-
It sounds like everything I've wanted in an EPIII card.
Don't tell me I'm gonna have to start looking forward to "Midnight Madness" again!!

Got some more hints from John...
-
::)
I contacted Dp, but he's heading out of town for a few days on business. He promised to give us a proper Ep. 3 card upon his return though...
Thank God. :P

I doubt anyone can faze my mad Windows Paint Skillz ::) :P

Pretty cool and reminicent of the OTC/vintage cardbacks. I like the design quite a bit and thanks for taking the time OCB to give us a visual.
:P
-
This card does look pretty interesting.
Wonder what the back will look like?
Damn, I am pretty excited for the year of 2005!!!!!
And Clone War Season 3! Oh yea!

Against my better judgement and time management skills, I give you my best attempt for the time available:

And for you avatar hounds:

I'm going to LA to staff a "New Warrior Training Adventure" (http://www.mkp.org/about-nwta.html) this weekend. Do good things with this thread while I am gone. :)
-
Meh,
mine is so much better You Rule Deanpaul ;D
-
Right on, Dp. 8) Scott, you can go sit down now. How's that one stack up, John?
Dig that menacing transposing Vader noggin there. Man, it makes his "regular" face look not quite so mean now... :P
Also, Mike at GH just said that the OTC card design is supposedly going bye-bye when Ep. 3 hits, and that all the figures will be on this new card. Hasbro finally nails the PERFECT card design, and they ditch it in less than a year. That totally bites. I'm praying they reconsider... :-\

Petition time. Seriously.
Nice work on that card... both of you guys. I'm frankly so in love with the OT cardback that I'm blind to all else. It's demise, even for a suitable yet short term Ep3 cardback will be tragic.
-
These things will rock the Episode III house though
Hopefully OTC 2.0 will return in late 2005 :-\

Well, if I get NEW figures then I'll take new cardbacks as well. I do like these cardbacks, no doubt about it, as I am actually getting two of each of the new figures and one of each of the repacks just to keep on the card but I like change and since Hasbro is so use to reusing stuff, I have a feeling these will resurface in 2006.
-
Looks fine to me!!!
-
It's definitely getting warmer. (No pun intended.)
And let me clarify that I have NOT seen Hasbro packaging, just Lucas Licensing's images from their style guide. This is the same guide every Star Wars licensee will use to package Episode III and other saga merchandise.
For those interested, the collector's packaging remains relatively unchanged. The upscale branding used by licensees like Master Replicas will retain its simple gold on black trade dress. Very classy.
-
Good stuff guys. MisterPL, do you know when we might see a sample?
-
I'm going to ask around when I get to the office. I skipped out on a Lucasfilm cocktail party during the Licensing Show where I'm sure more information was given out. Some colleagues of mine went. I'll try to get some info from them.
My guess is that since this new style guide is reaching licensees just now, depending on what product is being manufactured, this design could be incorporated by January '05.
-

Say what?!? I hope you had a REAL HOT date or sumthin' John, 'cause otherwise your butt should've been in there, diggin' up as many carrots as possible! ;)
Shame on you... :-*
-
Skipping out on an LFL cocktail party?
What kind of Star Wars fan are you?
Pffft.... ::)

OK...little birdy sent me some more really big clues. I've modified mine slightly and I think it looks pretty damn good! Actually this is almost spot on
-
Improvising on the title, huh? Honestly, it looks sharp Scott.
My question? How long are they going to sit on the new look card? After all, the AOTC card wasn't revealed until October 23, 2001 (http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/2001/10/news20011023.html)
-
Yeah just pulled that from some random wallpaper ;D
Probably be late fall before they release the details on the cards...although they might have something done by Comic Con...that thing is going to be chock full of SW
John...care to comment on my latest effort
-
Good job. It will be interesting to see the final product.
-
When are the sneak preview figures supposed to be released? Depending on the timeline, Hasbro might implement the new branding for that offering.
(Good job, Scott.) ;)

Do you mean the final product will feature angry Vader?
-
Hmmmm, I don't like the card. But I can live with it.
-
I agree with Vator!
I think that the card can be better, but oh well, I will buy up every figure. So to hell with what I think! ;)
-
This is my take on what the EPIII card should look like...
-
Nice work road, much better than my effort no doubt ;D
I'm fairly confident that my final version a few posts up here is almost identical to what we will be seeing...and my thoughts on it are mixed
I like the mix of oranges, reds and yellows along with the black to contrast the warm/hot tones.
From what I've been told, the Vader actually is really neat...not sure if that is a New Episode III helmet or they just drew him "angry" sort of like what Deanpaul's animation showed on page 1.
They will be pushing the lava thing hardcore in all of the packaging and merchandise. Its going to literally being dripping off the boxes and cards
-
I've seen images of Vader from Episode III. Purists have nothing to fear. The illustration on the branding is just a stylized version of the character. Think of the "Vader in Flames (http://www.toysrgus.com/images-castc/esb-patches.jpg)" icon developed for the TESB crew patches. That's as far as the artistic license goes from what I could tell.
-
I prefer that one, if it's going to be stylized then don't do some lame looking warped shot from the movies. Now, this would make the 3rd time Vader is featured on the card in the modern era, right? Seems like more than that, but That's 1995-2002 so it seems like more.
-
Road that's a NICE cardback.
-
This is my take on what the EPIII card should look like...
Holy S---! That is a great looking cardback. I'm sure it'll be better than Hasbro's attempt.
-
Ya' know, the more I look at that potential packaging, the more I'm not quite as excited about it. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool look, but it's almost got so much visually going on that I'm concerned that it might detract from the look of the actual figure on the card, and that is, after all, what it's all about, right?
I've gotta admit though, that I love road's example there. Having the Vader on that card, since it's obviously one of the more appropriate figure choices for the "scene"/backdrop depicted there, makes it very cool. That almost gives it the OTC feel, with the appropriate background for each respective figure. So for Vader, and perhaps a couple others, I think that would be a sweet cardback. But for the entire line, I think it may be a bit too much... :-\
-
I'm hoping the scenes stay too ala the OTC...it could happen with the lava acting as a pseudo-border to the bottom and sides sorta like the bars on the OTC card now...
I've read and seen complaints to the fact the Black/Orange/Red has been done to death but I really think these a bunch different than either of the POTF2 or Ep1 cards
(http://www.ffurg.com/cards/new/tim_potf2_red-tn.jpg)(http://www.ffurg.com/cards/new/kaps_ei-tn.jpg)
-
Keep in mind that Hasbro has been allowed to take liberties with branding in the past. If they don't like the way things are looking, they'll get together with Lucasfilm and develop a solution.
I've no doubt the basic elements will all be there (logo, Vader, lava), and Lucasfilm's branding has usually been pretty simple and flexible, but I've noticed differences between what Hasbro is allowed to do and what is expected of most other licensees.
-
thanx for all the kind words!! ;D
It was fun to just come up with something...
I hope its good no matter what they decide to do...
-
I like this last version as well!!!
-
That last version gave me goose bumps!
:P
-

OK...little birdy sent me some more really big clues. I've modified mine slightly and I think it looks pretty damn good! Actually this is almost spot on
Made a few small tweaks...it will be interesting to see how close this is to the real thing and how much liberty Hasbro will get in their design. The top left is sort of boring and I'm wondering if the SW Logo might be in the middle
-
Hmmm. That SW logo looks pretty tiny. I don't know, but my first impression was fairly positive about this card, but now I'm already growing bored with it, honestly.
This really is based off stuff that comes out of LFL's Ep3 styleguide? The orange/red theme is going to be played out before the movie even hits - it's so overbearing.
-
We haven't even seen the real thing yet. How can you be bored!?
-

Yes it is...I want to know what they plan on doing for the 3-4 months of time between the end of OTC and EpIII
-
I agree, what will happen?
I know RS had a report about four preview figures and a ship being released in November and I couldn't help but think: huh?
Where is the logic of that? POTJ was in full swing through the winter IIRC. Sure, it was the last couple of waves, but still at least 7 figures. Leaving only four figures and a ship for the Christmas season plus another four months (six months in total) is just plain stupid marketing.
-
I have faith all will be revealed at Comic Con next week...maybe even the Card Back :)
-

Good point. Fans are going to be getting more and more excited for the big show in May - to only have those 4 preview figures will definitely not be enough to keep us happy. Who knows, maybe they'll manage to work in some more OTC stuff in the meantime?
As for the cardback, Comic Con may even be too early to reveal the card. With such a focus on OTC, they may delay revealing it a little longer. Of course, I would like to be wrong, after seeing all of the great mock-ups here, I need to know what the card will really be!

Episode III Packaging Revealed!!! (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1090378453,63304,)
-
Packaging is interesting, undecided as yet, but that twin sheet set is disturbing. Why Naboo fighters ???
-
They are just mock ups of what the final products will be ;)
-
Can you clue folks in to the source?
-
Can you clue folks in to the source?
Nope :-X Sorry
-
A great Scoop of course Scott...
I'm still undecided on whether I like it or not myself too... I'll miss OTC personally. Not the repacks, but the packaging is still the best. :)
-
Well, riddle me this: are these official marketing images, or collector mockups?
-
These are not collector mockups they would be official marketing images I would guess from the same style guide the mock up card backs were based on
-
cool.
-
It looks ok, I'll still buy all of it.
I really do dig the Halloween colors though, so yeah.
-
I think it's kind of bland, but maybe I'm spoiled after all this OTC stuff. Oh, well. It's good enough, and certainly makes one excited for next year.
-
(http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/7-04/e3packaging3.jpg)
Really digging this pic
-
I hope they carry the specific backgrounds over. More costly I'd assume, or at least more time-consuming to someone who is saddled with desiging them, but it is what really stands out n the OTC ones to me.
I like the Lava though... I can just see it getting old, like previous cards have after the films are gone.
-
That's an awesome scoop, Scott. :o So I take it you're saying these are packaging mocks created by Lucasfilm for sample products suggested in the styleguide, not packaging mocks coming from actual licensees on actual products, right?
I'm going to post what's bound to be an unpopular take here - this is the first time I've ever actually winced at Star Wars packaging. I honestly do not like it. I find it gimicky, over-designed, and frankly screaming with a voice that says "mark me down and put me on clearance!"
I can see the scene-specific backgrounds being dropped just from a practical standpoint that Hasbro's access to shot finals and the time involved in routing approvals for their use may be too time consuming to do on so many figures in a short timeframe.
-
Yeah, not much of a fan of them myself either.
BTW, nice scoop there Scott. ;)
-
Yeah, nice scoop Scott.
Not very eye candy to me. Maybe in time.
-
Not exatley on topic, but, does this statement disturb anyone else? It's from last year's Wizard World when Dustro interview Andy:
"HASBRO: I love articulation myself. The market is a little bit different now, where you’re going after kids in the movie era, you can’t succeed if you don’t get kids involved. You need to build collectors who will be collecting for the next 15 years. There are certain things that kids like to collect themselves, and there are certain things diehard collectors want to collect. Kids love the action poses features. We’ve done the research, and it’s proof that they love that sort of thing. We basically have to please the best of both worlds,"
Now to me that statement means that it is actually possible that the Action Features will return next year. God, I hope that's not true! Colmen had better get the scoop on that!
-
It's nice to see the new packaging design for E3 but I don't care for it. It has too much black. But hey, I didn't like the E1 packaging either. Here's hoping the incredible OTC cards make a triumphant return with NEW figures some day.
-
Nice scoop Scott. It is nice to get a look at what the packaging is going to look like. To me, its ok. Its kind of neat, but nothing to get me super psyched up about either. I think maybe part of that is the fact that we are just now seeing these beautiful OTC/VOTC cardbacks, and other designs kind of pale in comparison. If we were just coming out of the Saga cardbacks, this would probably be a more welcome change to many. That said, the lava, and Vader helmet/scowl do look pretty cool, and I do like the look for what it is. It is a good "generic, helmet and colored background" cardback, but like I said, just doesn't look as pretty as the OTC stuff.
-
Anyone guess why JD's been down all day????? :P :-*
I've got some mixed feelings, I like it and all but I'm with most people in the fact that the OTC cards are as good as it can possibly get. It will be interesting to see how Hasbro takes this style and changes it for their Card Back
I'd like people with some photoshop skills (which I don't have) to take a crack at them seeing these new shots too
-
I don't like the lava.
At all.
I do, however, like the logo that doesn't look like it's drop-forged, and Vader's helmet is certainly striking.
-
I like it as an example of what it could be hopefully we will see it change a little for the Figures and Hasbro product. I think if this would be the final product then most people who are hating it would probally get use to it like some people did with the blue saga cards. I also think that most people have seen the great cards of the OTC and has caused any other cards to look less appaling.
-
Anyone guess why JD's been down all day????? :P :-*
You have GOT to be kidding me..... ::) :-X :P
Well, since you're reading big H, change the packaging-it sucks.
-
Hey, I've seen those pics and they do look cool, although I'm not totallly sold on the design. So I took it upon myself to create my own 'Fire' design and wondered how to post it. I can email it if that would be easier. :)
-
Frank
e-mail me: ocb75@yahoo.com and we'll host them here
I may even collect them and put them in the story if I get enough
-
Anyone guess why JD's been down all day????? :P :-*
I was wondering what shut you Jokers down again. Was bugging Dale about it over at snowtroopers.ca all day but he was giving me one of these :-X I figured either you guys let a cat out of the bag or Berry was running off at the mouth again :D
Thanks for clarifying they were mock ups. I still hold out hope for a prototypical X-wing and Tie type of fighter craft for this film, following along as the progression has with clone -->stormie.
Nice scoop though. The lava and general package design doesn't bother me nearly so much as the departure from the classic Vader helmet. This looks fairly cartoony and as though they were trying to make something that is already menacing to kids even more menacing. Sad but they don't seem to realize it was a well written character with a suitable outfit that made it menacing, not some corny scowl better suited to a slasher flick. Sigh.
-
Busy busy day... Even without the site up. :)
It's been fun seeing around the net all the people talking about it... There's a handful of folks who are, for some reason, taking a nutty over the article and the images as if it smehow offended them...
The cries of "Fake Fake Fake!" in one particular place had me laughing my ass off for a while.
-
Most places I went had their share of doubters. I might have contributed to the rumours of the premature demise of JD, at least in some places ;)
-
I'm in the middle about the packaging. I'm sure it'll grow on me. I like how they have that Vader helmet on the side. I just wish they had left the "Star Wars" part in gold.
-
Here is Frank's Card
(http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/7-04/frankepiii.jpg)
Looks good...someone else sent me this pic of the Vader Head mirrored on the for a full stylized Helmet. I wonder if that might be the way they go...
-
thanks for posting that ocb
-
That 2nd design is NICE. Hasbro, you watching? Freakin' A there man...
-
Remember this old beauty?
Looks like CIII is using it as their logo...I wonder if they were in on these images too?
-
As my photoshop is currently acting up I decided to use paint for this...it's a little assumption of what we might see in the Episode III product line. The pic is crappy, but you get the idea.
-
There is a new Hyperspace picture out that shows the new packaging (it's also on the mainpage) and I must say it sucks donkey balls. I reallllly hope that's not a basic figure card. Please god do not let that be the figure card!
-
It's a better design than what those styleguide images suggested. It's good for what they're doing, I guess... if you believe there are kids who care the least about these for more than 2 seconds. It's a pretty contemporary package that seems to fit in line with other modern toy lines. I guess I can understand why they did it.
-
Well, I guess we now have confirmation that the Grevious figure will have an action feature.
-
It's certainly unique. Very flashy, very kid oriented. I like the Vader looking over everything. Boo action features.
-
What is that crap? It looks like a cross between Justice League and Playschool toys! That is just BUTT UGLY. The Vader is cool, but the rest sucks. SLASHING ACTION!!!! Geez, that is an eyesore.
>:( >:( >:(
Boo, hiss.
-
The more I think about it, the more I am APALLED at this kind of packaging. It looks very cheap, like the kind of stuff you'd find at Dollar General.
-
so i take it that i'm the only one who actually likes this look for the new packaging? i don't know why, but something about it just looks awesome to me.
-
I suppose so. This crap looks like the new Spiderman stuff. Nasty
It looks like some kind of TacoBell promotional give away.
-
I like the art work in the helmet of the duel but other than that! :-\
Maybe the head piece will be a 3d vacuform card. :-\
-
I'm fine with the Vader helmet. I'm fine with the lava. Everything else SUCKS! >:(
-
Star case, will it fit? ???
-
Star case, will it fit? ???
Looking at the bubble I doubt that the Star Case 2 would fit the figures in them. I have a feeling the the makers of Star Cases will be making a star case 3 to fit them.
-
I like it.
If you'd asked me twenty years ago what I'd want in Episode III packaging, I would've been all about young Vader and the lava duel, so this is fulfilling all of those ten-year old boy wishes perfectly.
Yet it's not retro at all. If anything it's futuristic. Maybe a little sci-fi, a design element that Star Wars stuff has never taken much advantage of before. I'm looking forward to seeing one of these with a figure inside of it. I'm also looking forward to seeing an aisle full of these at Wal*Mart. With the large character picture on the right side of the bubble, it should be easy to sort through the pegs (as looking at Clone Wars Cartoon figures has taught me).
I feel for the carded people though. It will probably be even more of a hassle now to find a mint package, what with the big round bubble and die-cut top. Mine will all end up in the trash eventually anyways.
-
I feel for the carded people though. It will probably be even more of a hassle now to find a mint package, what with the big round bubble and die-cut top. Mine will all end up in the trash eventually anyways.
Maybe Hasbro will use a stronger cardback which would help a little with at least the cardboard from being dented or damage while in the case which happen to alot of the Saga figures before hitting retail or mailed out to you if you ordered online. I will probally end up buying most of the stuff online except for those things that will come out for Mid. night maddness 3.
-
I like it. It looks fresh, to use a cliched term.
It's far more inspired than anything Hasbro's done for the SW line's packaging in any era. We may like OTC, but that uses a base design about 25 years old.
POTF2 was a little bland.
Episode I wasn't great, at all. Almost ugly
POTJ. It was what it was.
Saga was bland to look at, at least IMO. The late 2003/early 2004 stuff looked pretty neat though.
This reaches out and demands your attention. I can't wait to see this stuff at Wal-Mart and TRU, begging for my to throw my hard-earned scrib at it.
-
This is very eye catching. I like how they incorporated the CW elements such as the big character pic on the bubble. I like the duel in the helmet. I like it's new and different. I don't like it's orange, because we've been there, but it's lava, and we haven't been there, so.
The true test will be seeing the figs in them.
-
Being an opener I guess means I really should not care, but I have to say I for one do not like it. I do not like the animated cartoon figure cards and I like this even less. It fits exactly with the action features that these figures will have and that I HATE as an open collector Bottom line, Hasbro IMO is sending the message that we make these for the kids not for the collectors.
So, in that view that the new Ep. III line will be marketed for kids, then Hasbro did a good job.
-
Welp, it sure is a busy looking package isn't it?
I expect a more subtle packaging design through other licenses, especially ones not so squarely pegged towards kids as a movie action figure line.
I'm undecided... It is definitely using the 2 core elements to the Packaging layout we debuted though (the Lava and "scowling" Vader), which were to be expected, but it's definitely far from ordinary.
Greivous, while I know he's the big pimp of the next film, is a bit much... That's where the packaging is maybe TOO busy to me.
-
It's far more inspired than anything Hasbro's done for the SW line's packaging in any era.
This is something I agree with, it is definitely the most work they've put into the basic packaging, aside from the OTC/VOTC. I'm not sure what to think of it totally yet, it is kind of busy, and the new card/bubble shape is a little different too....especially from what we are used to in the Star Wars line. I really like the Vader helmet (and the silhouettes on it), and the lava is kind of cool too. Another aspect they added, which I really liked in the Animated cards, is the character picture on the bubble side there. I don't know but to me the Animated line really stood out on the pegs because of that. Plus, like it was said above, it should be easier to find who you are looking for too. Boo...boo indeed to the action features, but we probably knew this was coming. As long as we get a good version of all the gimmicked characters this time too. I'm really going to try to hold off on buying the AF-laden figures this time around. With Episode II I got anxious to have a "version" of certain characters, when I should have waited to get the better one later on. I will say this though...I haven't been really "up" on the prequels lately, and I'm always much more of an OT person myself, but with some of the Episode III hype going on at Comic-Con (title revealed, pics, new packaging, etc.), I'm starting to get ready for this film.
-
I'm wondering how many of these they will fit in a case. I mean, lately, with the Saga line and OTC, it's 12 but these suckers look like they will take up more room so I am venturing 8 to 10 per case (unless they go with bigger boxes) so that means another possible ratio fiasco.
There is something about the packaging that throws me off, I really can't put my finger on it but I think it's the cartoon character picture.
-
hopefully they will adjust the box size to fit more figures and keep up with the 12 figures per case. of course, that just means they'll fit 4 grevious, 4 anakin, 3 dooku and 1 pablo jill into a case >:(
-
There is something about the packaging that throws me off, I really can't put my finger on it but I think it's the cartoon character picture.
I think that image will probably change. I think they used that image for the mockup, but there will almost certainly be a graphic pulled from a frame of the movie or some other rendered CG image for the production version of Grievous.
-
so i take it that i'm the only one who actually likes this look for the new packaging? i don't know why, but something about it just looks awesome to me.
Cuz it's aimed at the kids? :-*
-
so what are you trying to say? :D
-
Morgbug is old, so he thinks anything from the late Cretacious Period and up are children.
I don't really care for the new card/bubble.
