I drive a 1996 Ford Mustand, 5 Speed V6.  Probably not for long since my wife deemed it not a "family" car and gave me an "ultimatum" to get a "family" car :'(  She went in the ditch this winter (the thing handles like hell in the snow) And refuses to drive it anymore.  Since I can't fit a car seat in it I am inclined to agree with her sadly.  I bought it the day after I got my job, so it has been with me for 6 great years.  Days like yesterday where it is 90 degrees and I can roll down the windows and crank Pearl Jam on the stereo...bliss baby

I'm thinking about picking up a Taurus...I have all summer to look though

My wife drives a Saturn SL2 which is the official day care mobile 2 days a week.  It is a nice car and probably what I will have to drive after we get rid of my baby

I drive a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT. Black. 4-Cyl, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Tilt Wheel, Cruise Control, AM/FM Stereo, Sliding Rear Window. No Canopy.

Best part is I have just over 100,000 kilometers or 62,137 miles.
Long way to go on that puppy.

Black 2000 Toyota Tacoma extended cab, 5 speed, 4 cyl, no canopy.  Besides oil changes every 3000 miles, its had absolutely nothing go wrong with it.  It does have a cracked windowshield, though that needs to be fixed.  (I've been holding off until warmer weather, which is finaly here. New England is now getting the warm days that Scott had yesterday)

The wife drives a 2000 Jeep Cherokee classic, 5 speed 2 door.  I would have prefered a four door (easier access to the back seat) because her vehicle is going to be the family vehicle once the kids arrive (at least a year away before we even start thinking about it).  My truck, while it can hold a baby seat in the extended cab, isn't really made for transporting a family.

What is a Mustand?

I drive a Oldsmobile Alero, Midnight Blue, I got a good deal on it too since they going to stop making them.  MY girlfriend drives an Escort,  it is the old one that looks like a bug

Just a paltry ol' 1992 Acura Integra with almost 200K on it.  Used to be pretty freakin' cool, but not it's just old.  Much like myself...     :-\

Looking into picking up something new soon though - probably/hopefully of the SUV variety.  Just have to buy a damned house for the wife first...  (FRUSTRATING)

Geez Scott, your son is only what, a year old?  Little early to get rid of him isn't it?  Oh.  You meant the car.  Sorry. :o

Me have 1998 Nissan Altima.  Wifey has 1997 Nissan Pathfinder.  Pathfinder soon to go, hoping it is replaced by newer Altima or Accord.  Vroom, vroom.

I drive a 2002  Saturn VEU.  I bought it in January 2002 but didn't start driving it till the June since I didn't have my license, so I let my parents use it up to then.  As of right now I have 7,489 miles on it and its over a year old. :o

I need to drive more I think.

I drive a White, 1996,  four-door LSI Tracker with my license plate which has JJ BINKS.
My plate expires at the end of the month. Since Indy has changed to a new plate I could not get JJ BINKS for this year. So I will have to have the standard number plate. Next year I will have something, not sure what yet.

I just bought a '92 Thunderbird SC.  Let me say first off that these are sweet rides. :D

I got it for $1000, which isn't bad...  I have 3 patches on the frame and floor boards to weld, which my brother will help with since he has all the welding equipment.

I have a patch of body work on the right rear fender that is puttied...  I'm not sure if the car was wrecked or not, but being that there's not a spot of rust on the rest of the body it makes me wonder.  Frame's straight though, but ground effects caused these 2 rust spots in it so there is work to do underneath and I'll pay to have the body patch fixed with a welded patch.

It has a moon roof that's in immaculate shape, power everything inside, and it's really clean in the paint job.  I'm not fond of the color and a factory design in it that I'll eventually have all painted over.

It has aluminum wheels that were made for T-Birds secifically, which look nice.

It has high mileage so I'll be rebuilding the engine over time...

Honestly the car just simply rocks and looks wonderful though, so I'm quite happy.  The only thing that worries me, and the only known problems with them is the Supercharger on the engine.  Improper maintenance = one hell of an expensive part to fix.  I've never owned a car with a SC or turbo or any other speed enhancer like that, so I'll be getting used to that.

One other thing, it's a 5-speed, so essentially I'm learning to drive all over since I haven't driven a stick in quite some time, and I've never driven standards over extensive periods of time.  I'm sure I'll get used to it, but being where I live and my commute(s), I will definately need to get used to it.

Not bad for $1000 though if I do say so...  On top of that, the problem my old car had (An old beater K-car) has likely been solved so I'll have a 2nd car to do some of my driving in, and let me take better care of my T-Bird.

Well, after the civics both died we ended up with a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe - yes, an SUV.  Which I hated from day one despite the fact that it is a very nice car with leather seats, heated seats, 8 years worth of warranty left and a million bells and whistles.

It also got about 18 mpg.

So, this weekend we traded it in for a Mazda3 Hatchback:

We got a 2004, it's the Titanium Gray color (the second picture), is fully loaded except for the navigation system and leather seats, has 3800 miles, ABS, Side Curtain Airbags, Sunroof, 6 Disc CD Player,etc... etc..., and we think we got a pretty damn good deal.

It should be here in 8 or 10 days.

I can't wait.

Right now?

My dad drives a 2001 GMC Suburban, and my mom drives a 2003 FX-45.

I myself? I'm hoping to get a Volvo 240...there's just something about that boxy shape they have that I find appealing.

The wife stills drives the Jeep, but my vehicle is now going to be the family vehicle once the baby comes.  Because of the car seat issue, I had to buy a new vehicle.  I stayed with what I know, just bigger.  2005 Toyota Tacoma, four door V6 automatic (got tired of shifting in traffic).  A few days after I got it, I went and got a roll up cover installed for more storage.

Right now we drive a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.  Some people aren't big fans of SUVs I know, but we're really happy with it.  Its the 2nd one we've owned actually, and I think we plan on just keeping this one once it is all paid off (can't wait for that).  Otherwise, the other car we have is the same one I had since I went off to college 10 years ago...a 1991 Grand Prix SE.  It still runs well, but we basically just keep it as a "back up".  We're fortunate that we could really just get by with one car, with our schedules/work and everything, so we really only drive the Jeep for the most part.  Once it is paid off, we'll probably look into getting a newer car....not sure what yet though.

Some people aren't big fans of SUVs I know, but we're really happy with it.

I don't like SUV's one bit - but I've owned one for about 4 or 5 months now.  It will be gone in favor of what I think is a much better car (for us at least) and I can honestly say there were things about it that I liked very much.  There were also things about it that I despised.

It was convenient for us because we were basically given the car and only had to assume the payments - and the payments are very reasonable the way it was financed.

As for the reasons to get rid of it... first there's the $36.00 per tank to fill it up - 4x what I used to pay in highschool for a tank of gas...  :-\  .  The way I see it, Gas prices are only going to keep going up.  I honestly wouldn't be suprised to see $3.00 by this time next year, and $4.00 per gallon by 2007.  In the meantime, the resell value of SUV's is dropping like a rock - down something like 12% from a year ago.  The car we are trading in next week is a 2003, with about 8 years worth of warranty on it, and 35,000 miles.  The Mazda dealership wanted to give us $11,000 for it - it was something like $25,000 new.

It's a 2 year old car with reasonably low miles, a lot of warranty, and is in immaculate condition, but we're getting around 40% of what it originally cost.  As it ended up, we are getting $12,500 in trade (we owe $14,000 on it), so we're taking a $1,500 hit on it - but I expect that it would be worse the farther down the road we got as the miles pile up and the gas gets more expensive.

I'll happily go from this:

To This:

Even with the higher payment, we are saving money each month when you factor in the better gas milage and lower costs on insurance.  Not to mention that it handles about a billion times better, has better pick up, has very decent cargo space, and is a crap of a lot more stylish and fun to drive.

Swapped out the stock cluster for a carbon fiber styled backlay from a 2003 Anniversary Edition LE Grand Prix, this cluster available for only one year..ever. Just my luck.

Custom trunk mat with the GTP logo, runs around $150..got both it and a set of AVS headlight blackout covers FREE of charge.

The dealership from which we purchased it was going out of business, only had 86,000,and we snagged it for $7,800!

My daily driver is a 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT - very fun to drive with it's 6 speed manual stick and 185 HP 4 banger.  Very convenient too since the back seats and the front passenger seat folds down - I can fit a 9 foot Christmas tree in my compact car.   8)

We're considering buying a camper, so a 1/2 ton may be in the future.

Not having car payments is nice. ;D  I bought my '77 10 years ago, and it is worth more now than when I bought it.

If I weren't going to spend the next few years in school and training, I would go get a new Mustang.

My commuter is a 1998 Ford Mustang.  This month we purchased an 05 Jeep Cherokee.  Man, Daimer (Mercedes) has really turned around Chrysler in my opinion.

The Cherokee handles like a luxury car and the ride is fantabulous.  Although I dread having a car payment again, with a wife, 13 yr. old and 12 yr. old boy, and a six month old puppy I dont have too many oprtions.

Reliability and peace of mind (6 yr. bumper to bumper warranty) it is worth it for us.

Peace,

DBK

I traded my 2003 BMW X5 4.4 Sport for a 2004 BMW 325i.  My payments Literally were cut in half and my milage is better a bit.

My wife drives a 2003 Suburban Z71 and puts a whopping 300 miles a month on it.

Since the surgery, it has become apparent that either my wife and I are switching cars or that I need to find something higher off the ground.

Oh, it has also been brought to my attention that my weekend driver, a 2004 HD Sportster Custom is going to be sold because of the loss of strength/nerve damage in my left foot/leg.  Which is fine it was terrible for toy runs anyway.  No saddle bags.

I drive a '95 Ford Aerostar van.  It was a hand me down from my parents and even though it's not a "cool" ride at least it is something to get me around.  I would hate to have to walk to town when it takes 25 minutes to get there driving.  I will be selling it in the next couple of weeks to pay for a moving truck.  I want to sell it now even though I won't be moving until September...that way I won't have to worry too much about getting that done in time.  I am a worry wart!!!

I love my Jeep except when I hit the pump.  But its sooooo great all the rest of the time.  My new job will probably be only 3-4 minutes away from wherever we live so I the gas hit will be a little less than it is now.

The van is nice as well.  Sure its a family vehicle but its great for just hauling stuff.  We went to the lake two times this summer and what used to make us take two cars we can fit it all in to the Van.

I do really miss my Camry though.  I've been thinking about seeing what they'll take for my Jeep at Toyota...lower payment and better milage :-\

Don't expect much.  Jeeps get really bad resale value.  Blue Book on my wife's 2000 Jeep is only $3,200.  My old Tacoma, same year, was $8,500 (but it worked out to almost $10K after haggling when I bought my new truck)
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Morgbug on August 10, 2005, 03:22 PM
Seems resale is the same in the US as Canada.  Honda/Toyota have tremendous staying power in value, the majority of other brands don't.

That's part of the reason we bought a Nissan (Altima).  We could get it for $4000 less than the same year and identically equipped Accord.  No doubt the Accord would have had better resale, but given I drive 130 miles round trip each day for work, resale value was never an issue.  I'm driving the Altima until it gives up entirely.  It has no resale value at this point anyway and anything I replace it with would become a "high mileage" vehicle pretty quickly anyway, limiting resale yet again.  I'm hoping the Altima lasts me another 11 years at which point I'll just give it to my daughter.

It was also a bit of an experiment as I'd only ever owned Honda's previously (Civic-CRX-Prelude-Accord, in that order).  They were reliable for the most part (though they did go through brakes and exhaust faster than I'd like).  The Altima was a cheaper alternative, but an investigation into seeing if it's reliability was Honda-like.  To this point it has been.  The only major repair was the replacement of the Catalytic converter which was pricey.  They blame the gas we used, but you never know the truth.  As far as other components go, to this point (8 years, 225K) it's been great.  I only recently replaced the brakes, something I'd have done for the third time on a Honda).  Just basic maintenance for the most part, so color me pleased.

I drive a Silver 2003 Saturn Vue.

- It gets pretty good gas mileage.  20mpg in the city (which includs my "stop-n-start" toy shopping runs) and up to 37mpg on the open road/freeway.

- It's roomy enough to haul all my crap whilst camping/fishing/road tripping, but it's still compact enough that I can usually easily find a place to park it.

- It has all-wheel drive and traction control, a must for the slippery/snowy/icy MN winters.

All and all, I really like it.  It's the first "SUV" type car that I've had (actually, my only other car = Green Chevy Cavalier), but it doesn't act too much like one so I'm glad for that.

My parents are currently shopping for a new vehicle.

They're finally getting rid of the beast - a 1999 GMC Conversion Van.  That monster gets about 14mpg and has a 30gal gas tank = $70 to fill the tank every other week!   :o

I think the gas thing a little overrated.  Historically, gas prices have been well behind inflation.  I realize there is some price gouging and stuff happening and the record profits being made by oil companies is a little disheartening but in the long run $2-$3 a gallon is not too bad, especially compared to Europeans and again historical low prices of crude and gas in general

Psychologically it seems worse but we're actually better off than we were in the 80's.  Also, cars, even big cars and SUVs are getting better and better milage.  Hybrids and Fuel Cells are right around the corner and I hope this is the push that gets us there.  Both from an econimic but also from a coolness stand point.

Well, now I don't feel so bad - I drive 120 miles round trip a day.  Sucks really when you think of all the money we waste on gas just to get to work and back...

We've been new car shopping the past few weeks.  I've had my heart and savings set on a Honda Pilot.  After watching gas prices inch their way towards $3.00 here and accepting the fact that they are not going back down, I made a last minute decision to get a more fuel efficient/environmentally responsible vehicle.  Even though I really wanted the option of a third row seat (I frequently help my brother out by picking up my nephews), I decided to downsize and get a CR-V:

Though smaller than what I'm used to, I'm finding it has just enough room for our family and our gear.  And it gets 12-14 more mpg than my old van was getting :).

I read recently that the Toyota Prius Hybrid actually has a larger carbon footprint than the H3 Hummer because the Prius takes much, MUCH more energy to manufacture.  The increased gas milage cannot overcome the energy used to manufacture the vehicle even spread across the entire lifetime of the car.

http://clubs.ccsu.edu/recorder/editorial/editorial_item.asp?NewsID=188

They list the Toyota Scion as the ultimate "green" car when you consider manufacturing energy.

Funny you mention that.  I actually heard a bunch of scientists (well, three) talking about this on a radio program over the weekend, and someone called in with the same claim about the allegedly massive energy expenditures of making the Prius, and all of the scientists--even the global warming skeptics--said that was total bunk.  One of them said that it was a rapidly circulating rumor they'd heard before, but that it was based on entirely speculative data or something.

I didn't listen too closely, because the program was boring, but it's interesting to see that the story's making the rounds.

Being a skeptic (of AGW) I'd be skeptical about the claim too.  What I'm not skeptical about is people dumping a perfectly good four cylinder car just to get into a hybrid.  You are then doubling the carbon footprint on the manufacturing aspect to save a relatively small amount of carbon output, depending largely on your driving needs.

I was really just trying to give Rob a hard time, because it's fun.  I would caution against rushing into a hybrid as most reports I hear is that they spend more time in the garage than comparable gas only models.  And that's while still on warranty.

I do also get a kick out of seeing hybrids on the commute I make, which is 90% highway speeds.  At that point the excess weight of the batteries being carried IS making the car less efficient than the same model without that engine.  For my driving a hybrid would be more harmful to the environment.

Oh, and we're down two cylinders.  The 97 Pathfinder was traded in a week ago for a 2006 Nissan Altima special edition.  The other car is mine, a '98 Altima with 278,000 km (167K miles) on it.  Only another nine years of driving that until I turn it over to my daughter.

Well in fairness if you trade it in then it goes to someone else.  So long as the car doesn't go to the scrap heap those effects aren't really a factor.  Or so I'd think.

I don't know a lot of people personally who have them, but I've got one neighbor with a Prius and they love the thing.  They've probably had it a little over a year.  I haven't read up on them because I haven't been in the market but I'd think that if there were serious problems with them, we'd all know about it and sales would be poor.

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on a Prius.  CR gave it above average marks in all categories.  Problem is my car is paid off and the payment alone would wipe out the savings in gas.

But once the thing was paid for, I'd be on easy street.

'94 LeBaron Convertible GTC...  Though mine's green with a tan top, but you get the ideea from this photo.  I take care of it so it's in nice shape aside from some scratches here and there, small dents, but nothing major.

I need to get a new top for it though...  Mine's not leaking but over time the seams rip a little and look bad.  I may just do some cosmetic work to it though and save the $500 I'd spend on one and getting it installed.

It's a fast little beast, fun in the summer, great in the winter, and I still have less than 90,000 miles on it.

I drove a '95 Grand Prix to about 130K, until the transmission cooling tube to the radiator rotted out and started spraying tranny fluid all over the street every time I moved it.  The cost of the repair was more than the car was worth, so since my wife's car had just been paid off I pulled the trigger on the La Crosse.  The La Crosse is NICE, nice driving.

As of this moment, nothing. I'm stuck at work right now waiting for the tow truck to pick both me and my '95 Infiniti G20 and take us to the mechanic. It's really on it's last gasp. We just had a new alternator installed a week and a half ago, and it seems like something breaks on that piece of crap car every month. When the alternator blew, I was on the freeway going home, but "luckily" I was in traffic in the right lane, so I could easily just pull over.

The problem now seems like the same deal (no power to start, etc.), but what the hell do I know. The rub this time is that our other car (a 2006 Kia Sedona van) is getting its 7500 mile scheduled maintenance done today. So, our family is officially without an available car right now. This oughta be interesting to see how we pick the van up tonight. I fear a car rental is definitely in our future.

I had a long trip last week to make for work - from Johnson City, TN to Oxford, MS - 530ish miles each way.  I took the company car, and was expecting the usual Impala.  Instead, the motor pool guy grinned when I got there and gave me the keys to a brand new, two week old Prius Hybrid with less than 1200 miles already on it.

Fun!  Had to show me how to operate the thing - a lot of the fundamental controls are really pretty different.  530 miles and filled up the 11 gallon tank once each way - averaged 52ish mpg on the way south, and 49.5 on the way back north.

The Prius is the most innovative car of our generation - it's a blast to drive and the controls are just plain cool.  From the push button start to the touch screen computer - the car rocks.

I had a chance to test drive one and I was blown away by the overall driving experience.  The car literally shut off at every stoplight and I had to question if the car was even running.

Wow! that's great mileage-how does it work? Does the engine shut off in the city and change to electric mode?

Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: name on June 5, 2007, 11:27 AM
it's constantly adjusting between the electric motors on the wheels and the combustion engine - sometimes utilizing both.  It all just depends on how much torque is needed.

In town, when you stop at  light the entire engine shuts off - electric and gas - until you lift the brake.  Then, like a golf cart, the electric motors kick on to bring you up to speed then the gas starts up as an auxilliary.  On the interstate, turn on the cruise control and it flexes depending on need - climbing a hill is all gas, level surface it shares both engines, or goes on just electric, or uses neither and coasts.

Constantly adjusting...there's a computer display that continually indicates where the power is coming from.  It's a wonder I didn't wreck watching the animations shift on it.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

If it's part electric are there facilities to 'charge it up' in places or are they still rare?
I know at one of my local WalMarts they have parking reserved for electric cars but...there is no hook-up equipment in place.
The car sounds fun though..at least you get to learn something new about driving/operating a car instead or the same ole same old.

I'm still reluctant to look at hybrids seriously.  I think they're a great idea but for two points:

size = safety.  Sorry, but I travel a two lane highway and until they go back to shipping by rail I'm opting for what little size I can afford.  No, a head on with a semi is not something I'll survive in my Altima either, but a lot of other types of collisions are more likely to be survived in my Altima than a Prius or Smart Car or whatever else tiny little auto they make.

Fuel economy: sounds like the Prius has a good handle on stuff, because a lot of hybrids such as the Ford Escape actually have lower highway ratings than their straight gas brethern due to the weight of the batteries.  Prius must be the exception rather than the rule, though I'm curious to know what the fuel economy of the closest thing to a Prius (non-hybrid Prius?) would have been too.  Of my 60 mile (one way) commute, about 3 miles is at 30 mph, the rest is at 60+.

Oh wait, there's a third point: it's freaking cold here in winter and I don't trust something electric to start up all that well.  -30 C on a regular basis does a really good job of sucking all manner of battery to the point of being dead.  I don't think the engineering on these batteries is up to life on the Canadian prairies yet.

Another fun fact on Hybrids - The Ford Escape advertises 28 miles per gallon compared to the Ford Escape Hybrid at 34 miles per gallon.  Over the course of 100,000 miles, that 6 mile per gallon difference saves you alsmot $1900, but the Hybrid Escape costs a good $6-8k more than the regular version.  What a great deal!  Here's another fun fact: Has anyone done any research on what the impact of making a hybrid car battery is on the environment?  From what I've read, you will do less damage to the environment by driving a non-hybrid in the overall scheme of things.  :-\

You might be referring to a study by CNW Marketing Research.  They're an Oregon company, and like anything one needs to follow the money and consider the source.  However, they do make some valid points regarding the whole life environmental cost of hybrids compared to other SUV's.  Their story is sets fuel economy claims against the cost to manufacture, transport and reclaim materials used in new Hybrid class vehicles.  They consider the Jeep Wrangler the most environmentally friendly vehicle because it uses "established technologies that need less energy in manufacture and many parts that are shared among other vehicles, reducing the energy used in manufacture. They also have a longer life cycle."

So take it for what it's worth, considering the money most likely behind the study.  There are people here who would be willing to present data to suggest EP1 was the best film in the saga.

We added a second car last month for the girlfriend to take with her to school.  We went with the Nissan Versa - like this, but in black:

I actually took a test drive in a Versa yesterday.  I thought it was okay for the price, but it seemed like the transmission was gear-hunting as I accelerated.  And the salesman told me that the trannie was designed so that you would get better fuel economy.  Hmmm.

Better fuel economy.

That's one of the #1 reasons we bought it.

That's why I'll be buying my Camaro in 2009 - it will have the cylinder management system (whatever the trendy term is) where it uses 8 cylinders when you need them for the acceleration and 4 cylinders when you're cruising.  I'm only interested in it for the fuel economy, not the 400+ horsepower.  ;)

The gas mileage is OK, but considering my drive to work is 6 miles round trip with 10,000+ traffic lights, my mileage can't be too good.  :P

Welllllllllllll....

We're down another four cylinders.  My wife's Altima, yeah, the 2006, got rear-ended late last week.  Initial damage estimate is $8000 :o  Not a right off, but ouch.  Dude rear-ended her pretty much without breaking it seems.  Rear quarter panel has to come off (it's welded on) plus the whole rear end is a mess to the point of buckling the trunk floor.  If you think a Smart Car would have endured that collision, you're welcome to it.

Yeah, she's actually in really good shape.  She was a bit sore the first day, but has been improving pretty steadily.  Her hands are more sore than her neck, which is a bit surprising, but she saw the truck in the mirror so gripped the steering wheel pretty hard and I think that's where a lot of impact was felt.  She's got a pretty good headache right now though :-\  Overall she'll be fine, Matt's comment notwithstanding prick

I was going to upload a photo of the damage but here at work we don't have any software so I can obscure the license plate number, so maybe once I get home.  It's actually kind of impressive although really, really annoying.  I don't really sweat minor fender benders in terms of the longevity of a car, but $8000+ in damage ain't minor, so I'm not sure how this thing is going to handle going down the road.

Anyone drive a CUV?  My wife and I are looking at minivans and CUVs.  Toyota (Sienna/Highlander) and Honda  (odyssey/Pilot) are frontrunners.  But in doing some reading, I am inclined to look at the Hyundai veraCruz, the Mazda CX_9 and the Buick Enclave.

Anyone with experiences - first hand, second hand?

Yeah...  Don't buy one. :)

Actually I think you're further ahead getting an SUV then, but that's me...  And I'm not a proponent of SUV's.  They're generally safer though, and mini-vans aren't great on the gas mileage, or at least they weren't...  I don't know much about the models you mentioned but have some experience with Chevy/Dodge vans from the mid to late 1990's...  Not vehicles I am fond of.  Also they handle odd IMO, but whatever.

Having owned a Dodge Caravan I can relay that you should avoid one at all costs.  Having said that, are you set on having a third row seat?  If not, the new Honda CR-V's are worth a look.  We were all set to buy a Pilot until we started comparing it to the CR-V.  Much roomier on the inside than one would expect, plus it is much easier on the gas and wallet than an Odyssey or Pilot.   My experience with Honda's have always been very positive -- you can't seem to go wrong with one.

Edmunds.com has a tool where you can compare 3 cars side-by-side.  The most helpful tool we found on that site was the "True Cost to Own" calculator.  It breaks down your expected costs over the first 5 years and what it truly costs to own the car for 10 years (?).  Between the price difference and the Cost to Own difference, we were looking at a Pilot costing over 20 grand more than the CR-V.

2003 Ford Focus Wagon, silver.

It isn't pretty and it doesn't particularly impress the ladies, but it runs great and gets me where I need to go. The "wagon" component is great for hauling large and heavy objects. The brakes are good and the center of gravity is really low so I can take corners at speed without flipping.

Plus it's my parents' car, they pay for the insurance on it, and all I need to do is pay for the gas and the occasional oil change--so I'm not going to complain that it isn't glamorous. ;D

And at least it's not ... *dun dun dun* a minivan. :-*

Yeah, the minivan is hard to swallow, but we couldn't find anything that fit our needs other than a minivan. We needed space for at least five, and two of those had to accomodate bulky carseats for a couple of preschoolers. We were looking at the CUV-type autos with three rows, but they had limited access to the third row if the carseats were installed in the second row. We needed pretty good access for my wife's mom, so our only option left was a minivan with sliding side doors. And when we were looking for minivans, the one with the highest safety rating at the time was the Kia Sedona. And that's what we've got...2007, silver, and we're totally happy with it (other than it being a minivan and all). ;)

I think I've posted here before, but if not, we have two cars.  I drive a 2000 F150 4x4.  It's all paid off, so the gas really isn't that bad.  I also drive just 2 miles to get to work.  I'm thinking I may start getting my wife to drop me off and I'll jog home after work.  I have debated in a year or two getting one of those new 4 door Jeep Wranglers.  I've been wanting one for a while and with a baby on the way, I'll need to be able to get one in the back and the pickup makes that a little different, even with four doors.

My wife drives an '04 Hyndai Sante Fe that she loves.  She is dead set on not owning a minivan, so we decided to go the small SUV route.

So, the '95 Infiniti G20 I'd been wheeling around in finally gave its last gasp on March 9, and we had to pretty much immediately get a replacement vehicle for my commute to work. I started looking at the cheap, fuel-efficient compacts on the market, such as the Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Honda Fit, and Nissan Versa. My wife wanted to consider a Prius, but after sitting in one (barely; they're pretty small) and seeing the price ($23k), I wasn't terribly impressed. After about a week of looking, we finally pulled the trigger on a Nissan Versa (ours is white).

It's got room for my 6'4" frame and plenty of room for a couple bulky carseats for the kids in the back; much more than the previous Infiniti. It handles really well, and has plenty of zip. So far, the actual gas mileage is an efficient 30 mpg, so I'm pleased with that. Overall, though, it's just nice to be driving something built this century.  :P :)

I have an '03 Hyunda Accent that has been the best car I've ever owned and I only paid 6K new for it. Its got 95K on it and not one problem so far (knock on wood). I typically get between 35-37 mpg on my way to work. Occassionally I get 40 when I decide to coast down the hill.

I'm looking for something newer to replace it. Something cheap with good gas milage. It can't be an american car. I've sworn off of them after having transmissions blow just outside of extended warrenties one too many times.

Why, may I ask, are you looking to replace it?  It only has 95k on it, gets great gas mileage, is only 5 years old at most, is most likely paid off, and hasn't given you one ounce of trouble -- sounds like a keeper.

Interesting that this topic popped up this week. In the last 2 weeks my wife and I have traded in our cars...

My wife was given her choice of whatever she wanted (so long as it would hold our daughter and the new baby safely)...We drove Volvo XC90's, Suburbans (she had one already), Nissan Murano's and MiniVans....she chose (no lie) a Honda Odyssey.  And I must say for a MiniVan this thing ROCKS.  Really peppy etc...

We were in a position however that we needed something that can Haul and Tow with the loss of the Suburban..so...I trade my BMW for a 2008 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab 4x4.  And I love it.

Funny thing is we are getting better combined mileage and the total payments are $300 a month lower.

Suburban got 15 mpg
BMW got 20 mpg

Minivan gets 22 mpg
Truck gets 18 mpg....(more on the highway)

I only drive 5 or so miles to work.  The longest trips I take during the week is to meet Rob for toy runs over in Hell, I mean Dallas.

I keep meaning to get pics up of my cars.

I drive a 2000 F150 4x4, that I absolutely love. No so good on gas, but I work 2.2 miles from home and put about 6000 miles on the truck last year.  I may buy a Jeep at some point in the next year or two but it's hard to justify that when my truck is paid off and in excellent mechanical shape.

My wife drives a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe.  Not the best on gas mileage, but she only works about 8 miles from the house.  Her car gets around 15mpg, so that is a better than my 12mpg...guess which one we drive around town?

My wife and I have been delaying a family car purchase for about 6 months now, but with the radiator in my wife's 1999 Camry going out, we "broke down" and bought a new silver 08 Highlander.  We got the base model with a few other options added.  It's the first large car we've owned.   My BMW 2000 323Ci still runs fine although I don't drive it very much because it's tougher to get the baby car seat in and out of the car and the stroller doesn't fit in the trunk.  With the help of a relative, we're going to try replacing the Camry's radiator as a side project during one of these upcoming weekends.  We like the Camry a lot and the MPG we get out of it.

That's good to know.  It doesn't appear to be buried beneath a bunch of things, but there are a couple of fans that are attached to it.  Hopefully those will come off pretty easily as well as the hoses that are connected to it.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yup, the radiator replacement didn't turn out to be a lot of effort.  I have to attribute that mostly to my cousin's experience with replacing a radiator before.  I'm sure it would have taken me a lot more time if I were fixing it myself this past weekend.

We probably spent about 3 hours on the whole thing.  We didn't have much trouble finding and taking off all the screws connecting the radiator to the frame of the car.  We had to disconnect the 2 fans that were attached to the radiator and reattached them to the new radiator.  We put in the new radiator (we ordered a new one over the internet), reconnected everything, and filled the radiator all the way up.

After starting the car, the temperature gauge shot up to the "H" area after a few minutes of running the car, so we knew there was still something wrong.  We found a leak in one of the connections at the bottom of the radiator.  We took care of that with a new plastic o-ring and some teflon tape.  There also must have been a big air pocket in the radiator. After filling it up and running the car for a few more minutes, we found that the fluid level was low again.  We topped off the radiator fluid once more, and temperature gauge finally stayed at normal which is a little less that half way between C and H fo rthis car.  There were no more leaks, and the car appears to be running fine now.

nicely done.

While I genuinely don't like working on cars, I can't deny the sense of satisfaction that comes from having finished a repair job.

One step closer to driving the 2010 Camaro - production photos were leaked today!

The V6 will be a 305 HP toy, but things really get fun with the V8: 395 HP for the automatic and 416 HP for the manual.  And you can even save a few litres of gas when the cylinder deactivation kicks in to go down to 4 cylinders when cruising on the highway.  8)

A great article from Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=129446#2)

unless it's buried up under a whole lot of front end, radiator replacements are a piece of cake.  you shouldn't have a problem.

That's good to know.  It doesn't appear to be buried beneath a bunch of things, but there are a couple of fans that are attached to it.  Hopefully those will come off pretty easily as well as the hoses that are connected to it.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.

every time you remove the radiator and replace it or replace the coolant you have an air pocket from the bottom of the lower hose to the top of the engine. when you run the car the thermostat opens and all the water from the radiator goes  in the engine to cool it down.all cars are like that some like the VWs can take up to 1 hour to "burp" the car...

After 8 years behind the wheel of a 2000 Hyundai Elantra, I finally upgraded to a 2001 Honda Accord. I like it. I'm glad to own a car that has an automatic transmission, since every car I've ever owned has been a manual. The fit and finish on the car is a lot better too, since it's quite a bit bigger than my Hyundai.

I wasn't even thinking about buying a car, but when it was offered to me I just had to pounce on it. The price was just too good.

We finally got rid of my wife's 1997 Mercury Mountaineer.  However, we got out of the SUV class and traded in our pride for a 2006 Honda Odyssey mini-van :-[.  Having two kids really forced us to get something that was more equipped to handle a family.  I do have to say, after driving it for about a week now, I really like all the features.  This thing is fully loaded too:

DVD player
Navigation system
Leather seats (heated front seats)
Automatic sliding doors on both sides
Moonroof
Rear-view camera
15 cup holders
Seating for 8 and
Rated for 20 mpg city / 28 mpg highway

We took it to my in-laws over Thanksgiving and this was the first time in about the last 3 years that our boys didn't fight the entire drive down there.  They watched a movie on the way down there and another one on the way back.  It was the single most peaceful drive I've ever had in an automobile.

My wife has already started looking at our options for replacing my 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue.  We are hoping that it will last us at least a couple more years when there will be some of the newest hybrids coming out and the gas/electrics like the Chevy Volt.

*edit* Forgot to mention the cup holders and the rear-view camera.

Absolutely blasphemous.  Old school vans were for pot heads, drinkers and other party folk.  They had absolutely nothing to do with hauling 1.7 kids, a dog and half a cat around.  They are soccer shuttles hauling people around that really aren't paying attention to the road.  They're a hazard to other drivers for visibility reasons and contribute more than any trucks do to climate change based on sheer numbers and use patterns alone :P

A sign of the apocalypse.  Satan will arrive in an Odyssey ;)

BUT, putting your SW purchase in a mini-van?  Come on man! :)

I've vowed never to own anything but nice sporty cars I can barely fit the kids into (if it has a back seat at all)...  Let her drive the goofy looking vehicle!

Seriously though, if you've got kids you've got kids...  Where I live I think if I had a tribe I'd want a smaller SUV myself, but the weather isn't great here either so a van is even worse in snow.  I'm not a fan of 4WD in general though so I stick with cars.  And no kids helps that of course...  or get a sedan I guess.  I'd avoid a mini-van at all costs but that's me.  I don't consider them particularly safe though either.  I drove them for delivery jobs and they just never felt safe to me either, so that's probably part of my stigma towards them.

By the way, I look very VERY cool buying Star Wars ****.  I do it with style.

With a 2 1/2 year old and a 6 month old, I've given up on looking cool.  My Wife and I actually want to get a mini-van (Odyssey or Sienna), but its not in the budget right now.  Plus we only need one car right now, since I'm the only one working, so we'll deal with the Focus.  Though that falls in the "not" category too, so in all likelihood the move to a mini-van would be a lateral move on the cool-tinuum of cars.  And the boys are too young for me to look good buying Star Wars toys.  If they were a bit older maybe...

It's a fun little car to drive.  Got one as a loaner a few months back.  Much roomier on the inside then you'd expect and it gets great mileage.  25mpg city - not bad compared to my thirsty ass suv.

Minivans just never have a cool look to them.

My point is that at some point you have to realize there are more important things than looking cool.

Yeah, I've gotten over the 'looking cool while driving' phase of my life.  I've been married for 7 years and have two kids... I really don't care if the 20-something year old girl driving next to me thinks I look cool, or the guy I'm driving next to is jealous because he wishes he could be driving the sports car I own.  Now it's more about ease of getting the kids to and from daycare, having a reliable vehicle to get me to and from work, and feeling comfortable on long trips.

I don't consider them particularly safe though either.  I drove them for delivery jobs and they just never felt safe to me either, so that's probably part of my stigma towards them.

As far as safety is concerned, I'm pretty satisfied with the crash test ratings on the Odyssey as well as how many airbags it has.  But I've also driven the stripped down fleet versions of minivans in the past and I would agree with you that those never seems particularly sturdy to me.

Ultimately, it's going to come down to a person's preferences and needs.  Someone who is vehemently opposed to owning a minivan will never be convinced otherwise.  My family has owned vans and minivans my entire life, so I was never opposed to them at any time.

I thought FOcus got good scores on the longevity, gas mileage, etc.  And I've heard it's one of the better cars on the road quality-wise competing easily with foreign cars.  Probably because I'd bet it's comprised of many foreign made parts, if not constructed itself in another country.  ::)  I've heard nothing but good things about the Focus though...  Stuff like that, the G5 (or G6?  I'm losing track of Pontiac cars these days), I've always heard good things about.

I have a 2000 focus zx3 and I've got to say, everything I've heard that could go wrong with it has. It's been sitting for the past 6 months with the transmission out. The car has less than 90k on it. I've replaced the ignition cylinder ($350), had the strut coils replaced (recall or it would have been very expensive, quoted at $800) and the hatch lock has gone bad but may also be on a recall. I've researched the trany issue and have found it usually goes bad after you pass 60k. In some cases it's a matter of replacing selenoids but a full rebuild has cost some up to $1,900. I wouldn't suggest the car unless you've got cash to burn. Some have even had to have it done 3 times in less than 20k miles. I've got a 97 Ford Probe that I drive on a daily basis now.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

Probe's are good if you take care of the body...  Be dilligent about down at the bottom of the doors on those.  As long as the engine is maintained though the Probe's a pretty good car that'll last a while.  I looked into those when I got my last car (which I love, and still have).  Sebrings are really slick too, if you're looking for older model cars...  Tons of them out there, and other than their engine being slightly underpowered for the car's size (more an issue with the heavier convertibles than the hardtops), they've gotten good reviews as just a simple solid car from what I hear.  Probably will be my next purchase when I need another car.

I've been looking high and low for an AMC Eagle...  I'd love to own one for winter.  There was a damn good car for its time.

You know what cars are most notorious for their only problem being the body, Honda Civics and Accords.  Every car from about 1995-2000 you see on the road (with like 250k miles on them) has that little spot of rust behind the rear wheels.  I think Honda realized that if the engine and transmission go forever people won't buy another.  So they have the body rust out instead...

Toyota 4x4's are the same way.  If you look at the beds of those trucks, the rear wheel wells rust out something aweful.  Mine went for over 200k miles, but the bed rusted out somewhere around 130k miles and needed to be replaced.  At around the time I got rid of the truck I needed to replace a gasket near the rocker arm assembly (leaked oil all over the place with the broken gasket).  When I went to replace the gasket, my brother-in-law was giving me a hand.  When he looked at the engine (internally), he said that in the 20 years he had been a mechanic and even at 200k miles, it was one of the cleanest engines he had ever seen.  He speculated that the engine would probably be able to go another 200k miles with how good it looked, but by that point, the new owner would be on their 3rd bed with how bad they rust.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Jesse James on December 4, 2008, 05:11 PM
They all do that...  USPS trucks are actually made of alluminum and are called "Long Life Vehicles".  They just replace engines/transmissions (Chevy S10) as they get old/worn out.  Of course the tradeoff there too is they're ultra light by comparison to a normal car and that's not good for controlling them of course.

My car's a 94 Lebaron Convertible...  If you ever can get a 1990's (or very late 1980's with the 6 Cyl. engine) LeBaron, go for it.  They're amazingly durable, well built cars.  The body, the engine, etc.  They aren't 100% american made though, the engines are Mitsubishi, but they're built solid top to bottom.  They're good though if you can find one in good shape...  The bodies rust is all, all in the same spot (bottom of the door and behind the mudflaps on the front).  If you can nip that in the bud early though you have a long lasting vehicle that'll not give you much problem, and it's got balls to spare.

The sedan version of the same car is just in the "Plymouth Acclaim" type body that replaced 1980's K-Cars...  It has more areas prone to rusting, but it's a good solid sedan.  I got rear-ended in an Acclaim and then later in a LeBaron Sedan and the person who hit me had 10 times the damage either one of my cars did.  All the LeBaron and Acclaim got were little dents on the bumper, haha.  The Acclaim sucked eggs though, as it had the small 4 cylinder engine in it that old 80's K-Cars had, and they blow head gaskets routinely.  Dealt with those many years too.

I think some of the rusting problems with foreign cars can sometimes be attirbuted to lesser quality steel too...  American cars made with American Steel tend to have a higher quality to them, according to most body shop guys I know...  But they still rust and most have their problem spots.  I know my Thunderbird (and all I've ever seen) rot in the same spots...  Many foreign cars though do seem to go faster.

All you would need are "Assman" plates for the ultimate Kramer-mobile.

Actually Ruiner, if everyone took good care of their US cars, they'd last...  These days most cars have so many foreign parts on them, they're not really "American" anyway.  Like I said, my LeBaron's got a 3.0 Mitsubishi V6 in it...  But it's a Chrysler LeBaron.  People's views that "All American cars are junk", is mostly a bull**** think they've been fed to believe.  My 1986 Caravelle went to 235,000 miles and beyond (Odometer broke at that point).  I'd say it got close to 300 before the body wasn't salvageable.  It has a 4 cylinder American engine, and beyond the head gaskets blowing and needing replaced every other year or so, it was fine...  Grand Prix, Thunderbirds, etc.  There's lots of great American cars that if you took care of them they lasted.  Like I said, I'd like an AMC Eagle as they're an outstanding car, and 4WD.

Some specific cars, both foreign and domestic, suck...  They're specific though.  For the most part if you took good care of a car, it lasted.  Ford Probes are a good example.  They're fairly cheap/disposable cars, and they're easily found in good shape used even though they've not been made for a while now.  If you find one that was well taken care of, and you need a daily driver, I say pick it up if the price is right.  Same with Ford EScort, it was a very good car and the one with Turbo is outstandingly powerful...  base model mustangs through the 90's and early 00's are equally great cars, and the base modesl are easily had for a good price used.

I'd not be opposed to buying a foreign car, but ultimately when things do go wrong I prefer something I can work on myself and foreign is usually tougher to deal with in that regard.  I've fixed many a Corolla or Civic or whatnot for girls I dated in my younger days, and if I hadn't learned it already, they taught me that I'd rather have an American (mostly) car I can work on easier...  Those Corollas and Civics had just as many problems as my car did.  OF course my Caravelle was very lame looking though, and that couldn't be helped I guess.  :(

I wasn't sure if this belonged in the "things that piss you off thread", or here, so here goes.

Prior to us meeting my Wife had bought a 2004 Ford Focus.  Nice car, for what it is, but was fast getting too small for our family of, now, four.  So we were thinking of replacing it anyway.  Well, yesterday morning the transmission went kaput.  From what the guy at the transmission shop figures, we lost when of the shifting bands, i think that's what he said, so we wouldn't have 2nd or 4th gears (its an automatic).  He could either rebuild the transmission for about $2000 or get a used transmission off a junked focus for almost that amount.  Basically bad idea options number 1 or 2.  Especially because putting down $2000 isn't so doable right now.

So we're thinking we are going to trade it it.  Its got 85,000, so I realized Ford has a 5 year 100,000 mile warrantee on Focuses from 2004.  Great right?  Nope, the warrantee started in October of 2003.  Meaning it expired 3 months ago.    >:(

So now we're back to buying something else.  I think we're going to look at the Mazda5, maybe the Scion Xb, the Subaru Forrester and a couple other models.  Its a nice time, with the incentives being offered, to be looking, just not a good time to be paying for a car loan.

Get what you can out of the car's parts.  I'd take it to a yard that specializes in selling used parts to people willing to come strip them down themselves.  85k isn't a lot of miles so I'm sure there's tons of things on there that are useful from body parts to mirror motors.  You could probably get a pretty penny out of the car actually.

Or try listing it on Craigs List under car parts or something.  See what kinds of offers you get, that the car is for parts only due to the transmission, and offer it for half bluebook value or something perhaps (not sure what shape it's in overall, just giving you an idea).  85k isn't many miles, so I'm sure the car has a lot of things worth something on it.

I'd just sell it as in on Craigslist, I did that with a Saab that blew a headgasket a couple years back, but a couple weeks ago I slid into a guardrail and broke a headlight and mashed the grille some.  Basically enough where repairs were more than the deductible on my insurance, but not enough so the car wasn't driveable.  So that knocks out some of the parts stripping potential since a head light was busted, etc.  According to an estimator on Mazda's website, that claims to be based on KBB, I should be able to get about $2700 on a trade, and that's with an engine or transmission that needs repair/replacement.  I'll be sure to print that out just in case they low ball me with $200 on the trade.

Bottom line, if it wasn't January, I'd try selling it on my own, or at the least to someone who would part it out, but its too cold to be outside pulling parts.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Jesse James on January 15, 2009, 03:14 PM
Body parts aren't nearly as important as engine parts, etc., so if the engine's still good it's retained most of it's parts value.  The problem with selling as-is compared to the Saab is that headgaskets go all the time on cars, and are easy to fix.  The Saab's like buying a used Saab, basically, if you know how to repair the gasket (unless you cracked the head when it blew)...  The Tranny on this is a major issue though, and rebuilds are tough unless you know what you're doing with transmissions.  Most don't, thus $2000 to rebuild one.  I hope you get a good bit for it, but it'll be a tougher sell for a fair price than the Saab I'm guessing.  I had a car that blew gaskets about every 3 years because of just how it was engineered.  You just had to stay on top of it and replace them before it happened (watching for oil leaks and stuff).

People may call your bluff on the KBB trade-in value...  They'll say, "go try it then", as not many dealers are going to take a car with a ruined transmission right now I'm afraid....  I don't know if a Dealer would be quick to take anything like that in for that price.

Though, Focus is a pretty popular car so they may take it for parts, who knows.  I think sales of Focuses have been higher than usual the last few years due to oil prices, so maybe I'm wrong there.  They may take it just to get a new car off their lot too, who knows.

I have a 2000 ford focus. The tranny is out on it too. If you do the research on it the ford focus is pretty much crap when it comes to the tranny. I wouldn't suggest any year, make or model of the ford focus to anyone.

So as of tomorrow afternoon we're going to be done with the focus.  The wife convinced me we needed more space than a lot of the mid-size/crossover type of cars we were looking at, and since Ford & Chevy don't make minivans anymore, Dodge/Chryslers are way too much for what you get, Nissan's is pricey, and a new Toyota or Honda would be amazing, but not at all doable, that left us with the affordable ($4,000-$5,000 incentives help) but according to Consumer Reports, somewhat below average in terms of reliability; Kia Sedona or Hyundai Entourage.  Oh, and on top of that, generally the prices for lightly used cars is about the same as a new car around here (go figure?).  So just for fun I happened to search online for Toyota dealers and was looking through their used stock.  I found an 06 Sienna, with only 20k on it.  That means its been driven 6,000 a year, and unless Granny had it at the red line all 6,000 of those miles, probably in great shape.  And it is.  So now I've got a minivan.  I wasn't expecting it to have one, but its got a DVD in the back, which the boys will love, and it gets significantly better mileage than the alternatives we had, which I love.  Plus I'll finally get to have a second policy under the same name, so I'll get a break on my Home Owners Insurance too.  Win, win, win.

The Sienna gets nearly as good mileage as the Chevy Traverse (23 vs 24 highway), compared to the Kia and the Hyundai which get like 18 highway, the Sienna is the most efficient minivan on the market (except for the Odyssey models with the variable displacement engine systems...).  So I guess you could say I went with the most conveniently efficient vehicle.

My dad has a 2005 Sienna, and it's probably one of the best cars anyone in my family (immediate and extended) has gotten.  I get to drive it during the weekends when we go visit my grandparents after stopping off at my parents.  The Sienna drives great, gets really nice gas mileage, has a ton more space then the Highlander my wife and I drive now, and has had no mechanical issues since purchase.  My sister and I have been able to borrow it a few times to transport stuff when moving or purchasing big items.  It's a very efficient and practical vehicle for sure.

My point is that at some point you have to realize there are more important things than looking cool.

Looks like you didn't have a problem with that before you bought it though ;)  I agree, there is more to life these days for me than looking cool...

Yeah, I've gotten over the 'looking cool while driving' phase of my life.  Now it's more about ease of getting the kids to and from daycare, having a reliable vehicle to get me to and from work, and feeling comfortable on long trips.

If I said anything about mini-vans being uncool, I'd be a hypocrite...

Congrats on the purchase Kenobi!  You'll really enjoy it.  The Toyota and Honda flip flopped as our #1 and #2 choices while we were looking.  It ended up being a matter of the available models when we were finally able to purchase one.

I don't think I've mentioned mine yet, but I drive a silver 2006 Mercury Milan.  I really like it, and it has good mileage for the type of car it is.  The body is almost identical to the Ford Fusion (or is it Focus?  I always forget which).
Title: Re: What do you drive?

The Milan is Mercury's midsize sedan, right?  Then that's the Fusion.  The focus is a more compact model, and I'm pretty sure Mercury doesn't have an equivalent in the states.

In college I had a Volvo 850 I called Thor.  Not for any reason other than it was a Swedish car...

Hell, when I was a kid, we didn't even have seatbelts, much less carseats. We were able to fit our entire family of five kids in a Vega...until we got our '72 VW bus, then I had the "luxury" of being able sit in the cargo area at the very back. It's not that the kids today are bigger, it's that the carseats are bigger (or actually exist). There's no way you can fit two Britax carseats (with accompanying kids) and more than two adults into a normal-sized car. And when there actually is space for more than two adults (such as with SUVs and wagons), it's nearly impossible to climb over the carseats to get to the "free" seat. This is why many begrudgingly go the minivan route. We have to use the third row of seats about every two weeks when we haul the mother-in-law around. If it wasn't for that, we would surely have NOT purchased a minivan. But, we have one, and it's what we need...for now.  :( At least I take solace from the fact that it's probably one of the safest vehicles for the kids. But that's pretty much it.

yup... i remember fondly our old dodge coronet.  we would race out to the car so we could be the one who got to ride on the shelf behind the back seat under the rear window.  then when we got bigger our family had a couple of station wagons which technically had plenty of seating, but we usually had it folded down and the boys would just sit in the cargo area.  it was so much easier to get a big family around before all this safety stuff came around.  since my fam had 5 kids and most of the time 3 of them would have needed to be in car seats i don't really know if we ever could have all gone somewhere together in one car.

On that same note, it's really a pain in the ass to go on a grocery run with my wife and daughter in my truck.  1/3 of the back seat is taken up with a carseat.  The jump seat is folded up and that doesn't provide much room for groceries.  As I'm sure you know, groceries in the bed are pretty much a no go unless you want to resack everything when you get home.  So we take my wife's Santa Fe when we do that.

My truck is actually better for road trips because my daughter is easier to get to and the luggage fits better in the bed of the truck than in the cargo compartment of the Santa Fe.

I wonder how all of that's going to work out when I finally buy my Jeep.

Took my beloved truck in this morning to have the starter replaced (see 2 posts above).  I would do this myself, but I'm past the age of enjoying work on cars...I loved it in HS though.  Anyway, the guys at Midas (whom I've taken my truck to for years) pull the starter and check out the flexplate as I was getting a grinding sound sometimes when starting.  Well, about two inches of teeth are missing on the flexplate, also called the flywheel for you manual transmission folks....and the starter still is broken.

I expected a tooth or two to be missing and the starter needed to be replaced as the truck is 10 years old and I expected to spend about $350.  Midas guy calls and tells me it's going to hurt at $1000 to get the two damaged pieces replaced.  So I've got to get it done.  I've been planning on selling the truck, but wasn't going to until next year, after I had my wife's car paid off and I had a chance to sock away a big down payment on the next car.  So now I find myself wondering do I need to get rid of it now?  It needs to have the door lock actuators replaced and one other little thing that I know off.  The truck as 123000 miles on it and as you can see is in good condition.

So, I've been looking around online at cars and I'm leaning towards one of these.  I've thought about getting the Jeep wrangler unlimited, but I'm really wanting something big as that's pretty much all I've driven my life and feel better about big cars and accidents.  (Three nasty accidents, two of which I was lucky to walk away from without a scratch, and a third with nothing more than powder burns from the airbag).  Part of me wants to get a Ford Crew Cab 4x4, but part wants an SUV.  I haven't owned one in years.

Ruiner and Morg, you're thoughts and implications actually echo mine.  I haven't had a payment for a while and my wife's car is just about paid off.  If it's only $1000 every 8-9 months, no big deal and I'll gladly pay that.  If it becomes that every few months, then there is a problem and I need to seriously look into a new vehicle.

FWIW, I love my truck and really don't want to get rid of it.  I don't remember if I put it in the OP, but I've got about 123000 on the truck (miles).  I'd like to get to 150000 with it, but that will take a while as I only put about 6000 a year on it...it's great working 2 miles from home.

We've got 18 months left on our car... I can't wait to join you guys in the no-payments club.

I'm thinking that keeping the car as long as possible after that is a very easy way to put $305 into savings every month without having to significantly alter our life style.

Yeah, it's awesome.  I refinanced my wife's car last year to free up some cash to pay off some stuff.  Got that stuff paid off and now I'm tripling up payments every month in an effort to get that car taken care of.

I've got about 4 years left on my suv, but I'm not crafty on vehicle repairs and I'm scared to see what might happen when the extended warranty runs out.   :-\  It is nice to be driving a newer vehicle though.   :)

This tanker truck full of gasoline made it impossible for me to get home last night. Most of the truck was completly burned away except the engine and undercarriage. After standing still for hours on surface streets, I decided to head away from home and went to Downtown Disney to watch Prince of Peria last night until eleven. The traffic was still incredibly bad. I guess this is what happens when you shut down the busiest freeway in orange county for the entire day. I hear it even melted the road! It could have been alot worst if it was under a overpass. Not a good thing to happen on a holiday weekend.

Y'know, I like Camaros and the 67-69 were my favorite vintage cars but I honestly think Chevy missed on  this one, relative to the Challenger and Mustang of late.  I mean really nice looking car and I can see the look taking one back to the 60s versions but they didn't quite nail it the way other manufacturers did.  A little too much Corvette mixed in, a little too low and wide.  I'd rank it #3 on my cars that remind me of those 60s versions, behind the Challenger in first, Mustang second and ahead of the Charger which aside from the paint was an absolute miss.

That all said those are mighty fine looking cars.

I've enjoyed the resurgence of the big 3's muscle cars as well. I let my big block Ford go on ebay a few years back, and some of these re-boots have really caught my eye. I'm not a chevy guy, but I think they did a pretty nice job on that Camaro. I think dodge missed by a bit more with the challenger- from a looks standpoint the challenger may be the best of the 3, but putting it on the 300 frame made it too bulky- a full .6 and .5 slower than the mustang and camaro respectively from 0-60. They just left too much speed on the table by settling for an existing platform to bolt the body on.

I'm a year or so away from realistically considering a "new" car (being a car that's a year or two old).  I don't plan on purchasing brand new unless the deal is just too good.

Anybody in here own or have extensive experience with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited?  I like the four door model and from the ones I've looked at in auto shows it's looks like it'd be a decent vehicle that I can get my daughter in.  I've currently got an F150 super cab that is great for my wife, daughter, and myself, but the downside is it's really high off the ground (oversized tires with custom fender flares put on by the first owner) making it hard to get my kiddo in and out of her car seat.  Also, the back seat doesn't have a ton of room.

I've considered three vehicles, but will probably pass on the H3 that I wanted as Hummer is probably not going to get sold after the Chinese deal fell through.  I'm not buying a car from a company that's no longer in business.  My other thoughts are to go back and get another F150 but get the super crew model. The only downside here is they are hard to come by unless they are several years old.  I'm looking for one that's less than two years old.  I'm a huge Ford fan and have driven them almost exclusively for 17 years.

My other realistic option is the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  I'm thinking the Rubicon model just because my buddy has acquired some land and it's all kinds of an off roaders heaven.  No real mountain trails as it's on the Texas plains, but great for mud, hunting, and camping.  Anyway, I'll be the primary drive and I really don't mind a somewhat rough drive as I know jeeps are known for in the city.  Anybody have experience with how loud they can be on the highway or on the city streets?  My wife tells me she doesn't care about the jeep, provided I get the modular hard top and not the soft.  The soft is pretty loud so I wasn't planning on that anyhow.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Dan on May 30, 2010, 07:20 PM
I know they've gotten bigger (longer wheelbase in particular), but I had an 03 Rubicon and loved it. The noise on the highway depends a lot on the tires you choose- mine were mildly aggressive (for Minnesota winters), and the noise was something I did not find troublesome, even with the soft top. I wish I still had it (ton of fun), but that thing was not the right vehicle to have when gas hit $4 + per gallon (it averaged about 14 mpg). I don't know how much better or worse they have gotten in that department.  :-\

I'm sure not going to disagree on any of those points.  But the speed factor has never been a factor for me.  I'd be completely happy owning a 67 Camaro with a 6 banger in it.  Yeah, the speed and power are cool, but for me personally totally unnecessary.  That's part of why I like the new Mustang because it has a range of options on it, from trim to motor size.  They're covering all the bases.  Are six cylinders true muscle cars?  Nope, but see if you save a lot of money on a 67 Camaro because it only has a six cylinder instead of a 350.

I'm at the point where I'd really like to own  a vintage muscle car but now with the resurgence a newer model is ending up less expensive and more reliable.  I'd lose some on the nostalgia, but the functionality would improve.

Mine is only the RS, his is the SS.  Being back in school I could afford the SS sadly.  The RS is still a beast when driving it though which is nice.  I want to replace the bow ties, i hate the damn stock gold.  I switched out the gas cap which looks cool.  Contemplating changing the grill. Not sure what else to do.

I couldn't agree more. The fact that my old Torino was a big block was one of the reasons I let it go- far more power than I needed, a beast on gas, and nothing cuts up the hands and arms like trying to deal with header bolts that are right up against the shock tower and oil pan. I'm leaning toward a 65-68 mustang with a 289 or 6 cyl myself, but the reliability of the new cars is a real enticement.

We picked this up over the weekend.  It is a newly restored '65 - with less than 500 miles in the rebuilt engine.  We have been looking for a while for an unmolested Bug that was restored, but wasn't show quality - so that we could actually enjoy driving it.  All of the parts are original with all matching serial numbers.  The only thing we need to do is take it to the local VW restoration shop and have rear seat belts put in for the kiddos.  My first car was a '67 - so my husband was intent on finding me a mid-60's model.

Bit of a crazy week for me.  My Jeep died on Monday so I ended up trading it in for a brand new Jeep Liberty today.  I like the feel of this one over my 2003 version....seems like a bit smoother of a ride.  It also has some nicer features like a reversible cargo floor so it can either be carpet or hard plastic.

Not thrilled about having 5 years of car payments when it wasn't really expected, but it will come in handy.

I almost bought a Liberty back in 2004 when we were looking for a car for my wife, but instead we went with a Hyndai Santa Fe.  However, I'm looking at getting a Wrangler Unlimited.  But I'm waiting for the new ones to come out (hopefully next year) with the Pentastar V6 thats pushing 280-290 horsepower.  200hp that they've got now, just isn't enough for my liking.  I like being able to push the accelerator and actually take off as opposed to feeling the car lag and then slowly accelerate.  That's one of the things I love about my F150, it's got the massive 5.4L motor.  Matter of fact, it's not too bad for off roading.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Matt_Fury on September 4, 2010, 02:08 PM
I always wanted to get a Wrangler....and even looked at one this week, but the lack of cargo space pretty much kills it for me.  They fixed that with the Unlimited, but the price is too high.

The Liberty has quite a bit of power with it's 3.7L V6, and I'll take mine anywhere a stock Jeep can go.  I've been driving the new Liberty around for the past couple of days (going to sign all the paperwork in a few minutes) and I really enjoy it!  The new body style is a touch bigger and feels stronger...a little Hummer H3'ish.

Hey, that's a nice truck.  Wish I could find a decent beater like that right now.

I'm pondering a new top on my car, which also will require some welding soon...  It's 105,000 miles, which is a baby for them, but I'm just not sure if I want to put TOO much into it or just get something newer.  I keep eyeing Sebring Convertibles and the last body style Mustangs (though i love the new ones, but I'm unwilling to pay what they're asking even used).

I was so close to getting a mini-van given to me...  Tons of miles, but I was going to gut the rear of it and make it basically a hauling vehicle like your truck, Name.  Free car, can't beat it with a stick...  Well, actually you can.

Probably a stupid question, but for anyone out there with an suv - do you have a bugshield and if so does it decrease your MPG greatly?  I've had windguards on my doors for years and have been thinking about "complimenting" them by installing one.  Not that I have a problem with bugs smacking my windshield too much, but I've got quite a few small dings on the very tip of my hood from rocks and what not.

Wasn't sure if there was a stupid car/truck owner QnA thread or not....   :-\

No bug shield on mine, and I tend to avoid attaching anything like that (car bras, bug shields, cab visors, etc.) to any vehicle because they tend to trap water, and trap corrosive materials which eats at your paintjob anyway.  Nothing beats regular wash/wax and touching up the chips with touch-up from your dealer.  That's been my motto anyway.

As long as your long haul to work is in stop and go traffic I'm ok with it.  If it's mostly highway I'd wonder why you'd go after the extra weight of the battery rather than buying a Corolla or something with comparable highway fuel economy.  But either way, if you're buying a used one, maybe you'll finally be the one to answer how long the battery lasts, what it actually costs to change out and the environmental fate of the old battery.   ;)

It's mostly highway.  I owned a 2007 Corolla and averaged 30 mpg at 68 mph.  A close friend of mine routinely averages 45 mpg with his Prius at highway speeds.

Quote
But either way, if you're buying a used one, maybe you'll finally be the one to answer how long the battery lasts,

I'll let you know but there have been anecdotal cases of Prius' going over 250,000 miles with no issues.

Quote
what it actually costs to change out

Batteries from low mileage wrecked cars can go for as low as $700.

and the environmental fate of the old battery.   ;)

I'm more concerned with saving money and getting to work.   >:D

Seven mpg is a pretty good difference.  Nice to see the Prius getting the same mileage as my 1986 CRX used to get.  250K is pretty good, no doubt about that.  As for getting a battery that cheap, that's the beauty of a large population.  I'm guessing a wrecker up here would charge probably four times that or whatever half of retail of a new one was.

And I'm right there with you on the environmental fate.  Take it to China and dump it with the computer and IPhone parts.  I'ma gonna buy me an F-150.

I saw an episode of the BBC show Top Gear from a couple years ago where they put 1 gallon of gas in a Prius and 1 gallon in a BMW 3 series.  A driver got in the Prius and drove it as fast as it would go around the private race track they have on the show and another driver drove the 3 series.  The second driver merely had to keep up with the Prius (not hard considering the BMW turns, handles, accelerates much better).  Once the Prius ran out of gas the BMW kept going at the same pace and ended up going significantly further than the Prius (even though the Prius has much higher MPG numbers).  It was a nice illustration of it mattering how you drive, almost as much as it matters what you drive, if you are looking for good mileage numbers.

I had a '91 CRX where I got 45+ mpg on the highway.  It didn't have cruise control though; which made trips home from college labor intensive.

Depends what you're assessing.  Enjoyment of driving cars that go fast and handle well has absolutely nothing to do with fuel economy.  I'd rather have the Beemer  :P

If I were you ruiner I'd try and get a loaner Prius for a week to see how you enjoy the experience.  I know it sounds crazy but driving an Accord vs driving a Civic is a very different experience when you're just commuting.  I owned small cars forever and commuted long distances in one for a while and found the experience to be awful.  At this point in time, and acknowleding the future of $5/gallon gas, I'd still prefer to pay more for something that's more comfortable and enjoyable to drive.  If you're satisfied with the comfort and enjoyment of a highway commute with the Prius, more power to you.  Me being on the highway and mostly two lane at that I'll take the comfort and safety of a little larger (but still 4 cylinder) car.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: ruiner on February 23, 2011, 05:52 PM
Here's the dealio.

I have driven a base 2007 Corolla and a 2005 Grand Prix with all of the bells and whistles (leather, supercharger, moonroof, etc.) throughout my many years of long commutes to work.

The findings will not shock you.

The Corolla was good on gas (30 mpg) but was a HORRIBLE ride - the spoiler would whistle on windy days, the steering wheel was too close, seats were uncomfortable, etc.

The Grand Prix was a BLAST to drive (and comfortable) but yielded only 22mpg.  That's a sizable difference when you drive 130 miles a day and compare that number to a Prius (conservative highway mpg = 45 = 2X more efficient that the GP).

Now when you factor in $4 or even $5 (doomsayers) gas, that's a huge chunk of change (y'all have calculators).

With that said, I'm this close to pulling the trigger on an '05 Prius that is being sold at an incredibly low price considering where this market is going (think back to the summer of 08).  Yes, it has high miles (still less than 100K) but what do you think I'm going to do with it?

I've driven GM cars well north of 300K miles so I have full confidence in a car that CR continually ranked the best in terms of reliability and consumer satisfaction (pre-runaway Prius models).   :P

Yes, I know the ride will be a small step above a Corolla and the performance ('get up and go' sense of the word) will be worse, but at this point, I'm willing to trade that for an efficient means to get back and forth to work without having to get a second mortgage.

I'm not proposing or suggesting a car for anyone here.  I just want to say I think it's interesting see what people view as most important to them when considering a car purchase.

Anything under 100k is a baby, if it's over a 1990-ish car, Ruiner...  If the price is right on that, it's gotta be a steal.  My car's a 94, it's at about 115k and it's still got a ton of value to it because the body is in good shape, the transmission doesn't slip at all, the top's pretty good (no holes/leaks), etc.

Almost anything newer with anything near 100k are practically like a car with 20k on it back in the 80's.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Morgbug on February 23, 2011, 08:56 PM
I understand ruiner, but wasn't the Grand Prix a six cylinder (never mind the turbocharger)?  So you're not really comparing all that fairly between a four cylinder Corolla.  If you were talking a four banger Accord/Camry/Altima, then yeah, I'm getting it.  My Altima (98 with 225K miles on it) is still doing about 35 mpg although it's now rusting more than I'd like.  The ride of the Altima is vastly preferable to a Civic/Corolla/Sentra and maybe a Prius.  It depends partly on how big you are though.  Regardless, it's your decision and if that's the case that money is the primary motivation, I get it.

I will say though the comments floating about this week about $10 figures and $5 gas do make me chuckle.  We've had $10 figures (pre-tax) since POTJ and it didn't really impact anyone here.  Not to say that I wasn't envious of the US 'bargains'.  Same goes for $5 gas, yep, it's steep, but in Canada we've been above $6 and we've been at $4 and haven't really been lower than that by much (maybe $3.70) since '08 anyway.  But I guess we're just used to being bent over more than y'all are.  Europe is much worse I believe though maybe we caught up.

I do wish speculation and retarded media reports didn't play such a role though.  Yeah, Libya's in revolution and we're losing their production, but Saudi Arabia provided assurances they'd increase production to offset that.  It's in most of the media reports, but nope, media don't bother with that.  Should be a ho-hum moment from a price standpoint locally but the media feeds the frenzy.  Yippee!

If it's a great deal, go for it (not that you're looking for my approval anyway).  Being used sure as hell wouldn't affect me, I haven't bought a new car since 1986 and there's no point because my mileage, like yours, will instantly devalue the vehicle.  Right now I'm kind of lazily looking for a 98 Altima with low mileage, something around 100K that's been driven by a little old lady.  If I can find that I've got lots of spare parts out of the car I'm driving right now.  I couldn't get $500 for my car locally right now but there's probably $3000 of spare parts to it if I had another same model year car.   ;)

Bought it.  Love it.

Averaged 42 mpg on the first half tank bladder.

It's not fast by any means but it gets me to work at almost half the cost.

That's cool.  As long as you don't get shot for going slow on an on-ramp or crushed by a rampaging truck you should be quite happy.

Okay, I've got to bitch here...

Some assclown tried to steal my truck yesterday while I was in class.  He busted the ignition and then I'm guessing couldn't do the deed, so he took the stereo.  That's the second time in the past month my stereo was stolen.  This is the fourth time in the past five years my truck has been broken into.

So now I'm trying to decide if I really want a new car now because I'm tired of this.  I'm in a debate now about an FJ Cruiser vs Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  The FJ has more power (which is important to me) but the Jeep is just plain cool but has a really bitch motor in it.  I'm planning to buy used as I don't want to get hit with that first two years depreciation.  What say you guys who have any real experience with either of those?

I've driven an FJ Cruier (friend has one), and it's not bad.

I don't have a wrangler, but I do have a 2010 Jeep Liberty and it's very nice.  Good engine and lots of storage/cargo space.  Plus it's better insulated than a Wrangler.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

If you're tired of your car getting broken into I'd advise against a Wrangler then. :)

Wranglers are nice though, and hold their value...  They are a crummy ride for any distance, but when the blizzard ripped through here last winter, I didn't even plow the driveway, I just tore out with that thing first. :)  I suggest picking up a wider tire though too.  Stock, I'm not fond of.

I'm changing the manifold on my gf's this weekend actually though...  It's a 98, 113k...  She's going to I believe be giving me the vehicle when she has her truck paid off, and I'll gladly take it.  The frame's ok, but needs to be protected or it won't be ok forever.  Still, it's a neat little vehicle.  Fun to drive, but I rode to Chicago in one with my buddy to see our friend who was going to college out there, and it was a really not fun trip...  First because Northern Ohio/Indiana blow, but second because Jeeps really aren't smooth rides.  They have stiff suspensions.  I hear the 4-door ones are a little better though, and obviously they're less prone to tipping and things.

Easiest things in the world to break into though.  Actually you're further ahead leaving it unlocked, or someone may just slice your top open to hop in it to get at what they want.

Yep, 2000 F150 4x4.  I live in the Dallas area.

But, that particular body style has a very easy door lock to break.  All you need is a screw driver and some force to pop the lock.  The cop that took my report told me that three other F150s had been hit in the same area as mine on the same day.  The assclowns managed to steal one of them.

You would think.  There are a ton of them here.

Not that I mind, it's a great truck and I never regretted buying it...except it has a big freakin' target on it now.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Jesse James on March 26, 2011, 02:19 AM
F150 is the finest truck I've ever driven, every year of it I ever drove.  My old man bought a 99 Dakota, and I cannot stand that thing if I ever have to borrow it off him.

Every vehicle can pretty much be broken into, so believe me it's not just your truck Chris, but that royally sucks.  the 3-piece hardtop sounds interesting.  It's probably a bit warmer in any colder weather you'd encounter, but I feel sure the suspension still makes it a less than comfy ride...  But definitely easier to secure.

My gf's is a 98, and people can just unzip the top, so basically you either lock stuff in the console or you don't leave it with much in it ever...  Generally people leave it alone though.  My buddy's old one had someone cut the top to get in though, and they stole everything (worthless **** even), but left only copper coins...  I mean theyt ook the time to pick out the silver and leave the copper.  Too funny.  They took his Satelite Radio mount, without the radio there...  It's useless, but they took it.

I love that Jeep though Chris, and like I said, they hold resell value...  Tons of customization you can do to it (I'd avoid psising with lifts and stuff.  People don't know what they're doing with those but do them anyway and then they're all over the road ::) ), they're incredibly durable...  I know weathers not a big problem for you, but like I said, during the blizzard here last year I was tearing around in the Jeep while other people's trucks and SUV's were stuck.  My neighbor at my gf's place has a Humvee and we were the only two buzzing around like jackasses.  :)

I have it at my house right now...  I have to change the manifold because it has cracked now for a 2nd time, but I guess it's the material these were made out of.  I got a better one this time I believe, and it should be much more durable.

If you buy used, get under it and check the skid plate for gouges...  I passed on 3 Jeeps before I got her what she wanted because of gouged skid plates from people taking them off road and rock climbing.

Chris

Get the Jeep!  I got one in December and it rocks.  The 3 Piece "Freedom" top takes about 20 minutes to get off though.

This is not mine but exactly what it looks like.

The Sahara package (while not as Rugged and Pimp as the Rubicon) had a better feel on the road where I will spend most of the time in it for the first 3 years of it's life with me.

The only thing I would change is I would have gotten the "Dual" top instead of just the "3 piece Freedom top".

I love the fact it is the same color all over.  Jeeps are very much like a Harley though, because I find myself wanting to customize it with badges and things and a brush guard/winch, light covers and lift kit and safari roof rack, snorkel and if possible an MG cupola (but only if they can color match the armor)

The thing I notice most in it is at highway speeds you really notice that you are driving something with a vertical windshield.  I have a gruelling 5 mile commute so it is not a major thing.

F150's must be a Dallas thing, we are Silverado folks over here in Ft. Worth.

I don't know what the national numbers are but I know Pick Ups are the most stolen vehicles in N. Texas.

Paul, what's the acceleration like?  I know its got a small motor, but can you jam the peddle and get some kick to it?  Part of me wants to wait for the 2012 model with the pentastar 280hp motor.  But I don't like buying new cars.  Like you, I only have a five mile roundtrip ride to work.

Hah, yeah...  I forgot that.

My gf's is red, and we call it the "little brick".  I don't know how bad wind can get down your way, but up here it can rip through the valleys pretty good on some days, and crossing the rivers on the high bridges can be a real experience when driving the "little brick".

And it's become almost a joke that every time I'm driving it, it's a wind advisory day...  But still fun for sure.

Another thing I like about the Wrangler, it's the most maneuverable vehicle I've ever driven besides a US Mail truck...  the USPS uses S10's with aluminum bodies, and their front wheel width is shortened so it can turn on a dime to a point it easily will tip.  It's the only thing I've ever driven that is sharper to turn than a Jeep Wrangler...  They can fit into the tiniest parking spots because of that though.  In a city like Pittsburgh, it's helpful.  Not sure if that's something you'll care about down there though.  It helped in Chicago though, for certain.

Diane's is a 4.0, 6 Cy., 5-speed, it's pretty powerful...  What do they have now?  Hers really has a nice jump from a dead start.

Well, I finally decided to take on a new car payment and sold my beloved F150 and bought a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  As soon as I get my cash for selling my pickup, I'll be adding some black rims and All Terrain tires to the Jeep.  I'd like to go with some hard core mud terrain tires, but I won't be off road every day, so ATs will do.  I'm planning to add a cargo rack, cold air induction, front bumper with grill guard and possibly a winch. Anyway, here's what I'm rolling in for now.

I too, am now in a Jeep Wrangler as my 2nd car...  :)  My gf got a new used car (Mustang convertible), and didn't want her 98 Wrangler, so it's now mine.  Brought it home tonight...  I have some things to do with it that I've wanted to do but getting it off of her to take care of it isn't easy.  Now that it's mine, and a 2nd vehicle, I'll have time to just roll it in to do upgrades (and the same for my old car, which sorely needs some body work right now).

Our car is paid off next month, we owe $90 on it.  I'm really excited.  We're going to keep making a car payment to ourselves for the next two or three years into savings so that we can put a big fat down payment on the next car.  We're thinking Subaru.

And now I have new wheels and better quality tires.  I'd love to build it into a rock climber, but the cost is a bit prohibitive.  Instead I'll stick with my hunting trips and light mud duty.  I'm probably going to put some spacers up front to level it out and possibly take off the step up bars.

Down the road I'm looking at a new bumper and fender flares.

So I traded in my 06 Eddie Bauer Explorer last week and the dealership I sold it to is selling it for $700 more then what I paid for it back in 08.  Just wondering how that is possible or is the dealership just insane?  All I did to it was put on a bug shield and some wind deflectors over the side windows.  Oh and I put 35k miles on it, needed new tires, was a MASSIVE gas sucker, and it had some hail damage.

It might be partly because it wasn't traded in on the cash for clunkers program that took a lot of those types of vehicles off the road, vehicles that couldn't be re-sold, making this more rare?  Plus, from what I've heard, used car prices were up somewhat because there was demand for them over new, partly due to the economy.

The latter part of what Eric said is my bet on that iFett...  Used cars are up right now, pretty high.  I was offered more than I paid for my car some time ago, and it's in rough shape now these days.  I'm taking it off the road actually to do major repairs to it now that it's kind of hit "beater" status.  I want to salvage it as best I can, get new top, doors, engine overhauled...  I paid $2400 for it about 8 years ago, and was offered $2500 for it just the other day by a guy who noticed I hadn't driven it since I got my Jeep.  Go figure.

It can be distracting if its all the way up. I turn it down a little. The thing that distracts me is the GPS and XM radio. I love being able to see title songs and traffic conditions. Of course, I'm coming from a car that has no eletronics at all. The Accent didn't even have automatic windows or locks! I was lucky to have air in that car. The Sonata is lot more plush. It reminds me of my old T-Bird.

Kinda neat looking for a little hatchback Dale...  Curious how it'll get around up in the great white north though.  Guess you're in a relatively flat area though, eh?

My gf bought a 98 Mustang a little while ago, and even though our winter was mild last year, when it did snow that car went surprisingly well in it.  That's always such a big issue for us to think about with the hills and potentially bad winters...  It can be a nightmare with the wrong car.  I had a 76 Maverick when I was young (my bro's I drove sometimes) and whoo boy was that thing fun in the snow.  Heavy as hell and rear wheel drive...  The ass would come around on you in a heartbeat.

My dad always hated buying 4WD so we always had just RWD pick-ups...  Talk about a bad idea on a hill on a snowy day. :)  Had to watch weather reports and not take those things out at all.  Just too light to get traction, even if you loaded up the back.  Mail trucks are the same way...  They're just little S10's with only RWD and *gasp* an all aluminum body so they're ultra light.

Been a new car kinda holiday for everyone here.

Today, out of the blue, my gf went and bought a new car trading in her 98 Mustang Convertible...  I liked that car, it was a base 6 but was really peppy.  I was getting a little tired getting in/out of it though, I must admit.

Anyway, right before Christmas I bought a sweet little, cherry red, 5 Speed...

2002 Chevy Cavalier with 133k on it. :P

It was a kid's car that had been for sale up on the hill above my place.  It kept going down, and down, and down, and eventually it hit $500 and the inspection was running out.  I know his dad, and basically the car needs body work to pass inspection, but in January he was going to junk it and scrap value's just a little less than the $500.  It runs/drives perfect, and that little engine those Cavaliers have is a tough one.  Not having to worry about an AT f'n up down the road is nice incentive too.

So for the last couple weeks it has sat in our shop getting body work done.  Sheet metal and rivets baby!  This thing will look like a Rebel A-Wing when it's done.  ;D  I honestly have considered painting shark teeth and eyes on it like a P-40.  I needed a beater for work...  I'm putting my Jeep in the garage to sandblast the frame and protect it.  Also taking the bumpers off to sandblast them (they're steel tubes), and I'm taking the front brace/push bar off it that the previous owner used when they towed it incase it bumped into the back of their RV, and I'm going to weld teeth to the tubes of the push bar (seriously I am doing this).

My gf wrecked the Jeep once, which I fixed but the fender's showing its age now from her denting it, and so I'm going to look for a replacement for that as well.  I have some other work I want to do...  It needs a new heater core and things, and I'm thinking about putting the hardtop on it and fixing the AC.  Compressor's fine I just need new lines which aren't cheap.

Also need to find a coolant leak it has going on, but that's the point of the Cavalier...  That car has a good 2 or 3 years left in it, maybe more if the body holds and I don't have a ton of miles to put on it, so my Jeep will be babied and much happier to have me beating the hell out of this little red coupe.

Sad thing is, other than the gaping holes in the body, that Cavalier looks really nice.  Never wrecked, and the kid only drove it for 15k so he didn't have a long time beating it around.  Otherwise his old man drove it and bought it new, and I know he didn't drive it like he stole it.  Good little car almost sent to the compactor!  These little gems for $500 are getting harder and harder to get.

Jesse, maybe this will make you smile.  I finally got my lift put on my Jeep.  I got a Teraflex leveling kit, which brought the front up about 2.5"  and the rear up about 1.5"  I've got a Rugged Ridge stubby tube bumper due to be delivered this week.  The pic is kind of crappy but it's the best I've got for the moment.

Nice Chris.

Mine's got a slight brake leak too so it's going in the garage tonight and my car's coming out of our shop soon.  I'll drive one of the others till then.

My gf bought a 2012 Chrysler 200 I mentioned above.  I drove it around this weekend...  VERY nice car.  Roomy, handles nice, peppy but nothing insane.  Love the heated seats, and all the little doo-dads inside.  Remote start was well worth it.

Anyway, love this car already, and am already thinking if I buy new I'm leaning towards Chrysler.  I'd test-driven some others with her over the Fall, but not this.  We drove a Dart though and it was pretty slick too.  This is a nice mid-range car to me though.

We took it out last night for NYE and it was just so great walking out to a warm car.  Goofy but I loved it.

Any of you catch the article on Yahoo! about all the Hurricane Sandy flood salvage vehicles?

http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/classics-flooded-sandy-still-waiting-salvage-lot-saviors-220322167.html

I browsed the site for about an hour looking at everything from boats to exotic cars and construction vehicles.

Anyone ever purchase a salvage vehicle with water/flood damage?  A buddy of mine picked up a Chevy Tahoe years ago that was a flood salvage vehicle and has never had anything wrong with it beyond normal wear.  Curious to hear if he was just lucky or if others have also purchased flood damage vehicles and had no problems.

I caught the article earlier too.  Some cool cars there.

I'd describe him as lucky, personally.  It depends if it gets into the more sensitive electronics.  Electronics can dry out, but a car's computer can be fried and you're talking a boatload to fix something like that.

Not to mention potential long-term damage one might not see...  a car may get flooded, and sound-dampening foam that was intended to never see water, gets wet, and rots the car inside-out.

Then you have to figure, should you wish to resell, I believe it's illegal to not disclose the damage on the title.  It will probably be on it forever through your state's DMV.

Some of the older cars, like the article mentions the packard, those are far less likely to be damaged...  They're less complex and so less sensitive stuff can be damaged.  At the same time, some of those cars are worth parting out alone for the prices listed...  I mean, a solid body on some of those cars, alone, could sell to a chop shop to make a rod out of it, or whatnot.  A lamborghini or ferarri can be parted out quite easily, from door panels and fenders, to any piece of the engine that's survived...  knowing how to even dismantle one might be tricky for the average grease monkey though.  Cars like that, I live by the motto that if you cannot afford a brand new one, you simply cannot afford one, period. :P

On things like a 65 Mustang, you can part it out, but is it worth your trouble?  You could try rebuilding it...  But you can find ones that won't have the issues that one almost inevitably will for a fair price too.

There's a lot of "what if" with water damaged cars unfortunately.  I'd not recommend them to anyone without a good garage and a bit of car knowledge, plus the ability to take a bath on something being unfixiable, personally.  :-\

Now if I had an almost-restored car and they had one for a fair price, might totally be worth picking it up for the parts I needed, should they be parts I can be relatively sure are safe, or salvageable.

I think some people will salivate, then realize rebuilding some of what will inevitably need it, is far beyond their abilities.

This for the win.  I thought about looking around for an older Jeep to build up.  Then I decided my pocket book probably wouldn't be able to handle what my ego said I could do.  So I decided to pass on a salvage vehicle.

It's like jumping into any new hobby.  It's gonna cost ya, but what you know about it (or don't) will wind up costing you more possibly.

Problem with cars is, if you don't know what you're doing, and you have to pay to have things done, you're really into a lot more money unless you have friends.

Going to check out the dark grey, 2014, limited Crosstrek this weekend.  I think we're buying one next month.

EDIT:  Put the deposit down.  The car will be here around July 10.

Congrats on the new purchase Rob, it looks pretty sharp.

I'm pretty proud of our new vehicle purchase, a 2013 GMC Sierra.  The cool thing is it's a hybrid, so it actually gets better gas mileage than my previous SUV (Hyundai Veracruz).  We're going camping next week, so the timing couldn't be better.

I bought this last year and absolutely LOVE it...getting almost 36mpg on the highway.  I can't recommend a Hyundai and the Sonata enough

I do the same from about April until the early part of December - to work at least.  It's about a 12 mile round trip down the lake from my house to my office and it's awesome.  We put gas in the car maybe every 5 or 6 weeks during those months.

The new car is going with my wife, to New Hampshire where she'll have a 20 mile or so commute.

Wow 5 or 6 weeks?  I'd drop a lil seafoam in just to keep things dry and smoove.

Not familiar... would that still be your advice if I told you I was still driving the car every 3 to 4 days, but just wasn't going far enough to burn through a tank of gas that fast?
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Jesse James on August 4, 2014, 03:44 AM
Ah ok, no...  You won't need to do that then.  Yeah it's just an additive to keep moisture out of fuel lines that aren't used often.  If you're starting it up and running it routinely, just not far, that'll keep it fine.  Gas goes "bad" though if it's left sit long periods and in general moisture gathers in the tank and things and that's not good so you dump a little Seafoam in...

There are other products, Heet, etc.  All basically doing the same thing, but Seafoam is some pretty solid stuff and seems to clear up a lot of fuel issues I've found.  People put it in boats for the winter, tractors, etc.

You'll be good though running it just for short bits.

2004 Silver Mustang :)

Still driving this one, though it has been beaten up in 9 years of ownership...

I recently saved up enough cash to put a nice down payment on a new car, but my Mustang just hit 100,000 miles this summer (it had around 20,000 when I got it, and I didn't drive much in high school or college due to bus routes and carpooling) so I decided I would use that cash to fix up my car. Spent the last week fixing up the engine (was having transmission problems) and the next step will be replacing the stereo (it's too new for a cassette deck but too old to have an AUX port for music players and phones). After the new year I'll start saving to get a new paintjob and fix a giant dent from being sideswiped in a parking lot last year.

Got a bad diagnosis on my wife's 2004 Mitsubishi Galant - cracked ball joints in the front and leaking transmission fluid (badly) now.  Oh, and the friggin muffler fell off as the exhaust just rusted out. (all of this just two weeks after the water pump blew up on our Toyota. Cars, man.  ::))

Rather than dump a couple thousand into a car worth $1800 (again - just got all new brakes, tires, and battery last fall), we decided it was time to upgrade her ride.  She's now driving a new 2016 Dodge Durango.  Kind of a bummer to have to take on a car payment again after not having one for a few years, but that's how it goes I guess.

Here's our current stable -
2008 Toyota Sienna XLE
2009 Saturn Outlook XR
2016 Dodge Durango Citadel

The Toyota is my main drive usually.  Used to haul kids around to soccer, t-ball, baseball, tennis, school, dance, tumbling, swimming, etc etc etc.  Also used by our summer nanny to haul the kids around to summer activites (since all the kids won't fit in her sedan).

The Outlook is my main drive in the summer, also primarily used for hauling our pop-up camper or my dad's boat, as we're doing the camping/road trip across america thing, etc.

The Durango will be my wife's daily ride. She's never been a big mini-van fan and held onto her pre-kids sedan for as long as she could.  Durango will be a nice upgrade for her though - lots of new gadgets (navigation, bluetooth, etc).  Plus, it'll be nice to have a second option now for hauling the camper or boat (as there was no way our mini-van or her old Galant were pulling the camper).

When we were having our second child, my wife started to look into a minivan...I was able to talk her into a Honda Pilot...that thing is great.

A few months ago I got a new job that came with a nice boost in pay.  I'm starting to look at trading in my 2010 Jeep Liberty for a new Rubicon since Jeep doesn't make the Liberty anymore.  So far, my list of requirements are:

-Steel bumpers
-GPS navigation
-Leather heated seats

Yeah...this is going to set me back a few bucks.   ;D

Matt, get a four door model.  With kids, you will thank me for that.  Maybe you can still get a new 2016 or a 2017 before the new body style comes out next year.  Trust me, that will save you on upgrade and modification costs down the road.

If you get one and decide to start upgrading let me know.  There is a right and wrong way to do it.

Thanks Chris...the Unlimited version is definitely the way I'd go, even though the Pilot is "the family car".

Since we had some big purchases this year (repairs to our house as well as buying a condo for the retiring mother-in-law), I'm probably going to wait until next year's model comes out.  I think the 2018s are going to have a bigger engine in them.

Lol Jeff I keep wire coat hangars in all my cars at some point I know the exhaust will come off.  And of course up here the salt makes sure you'll need it.

My current fleet is full of lots of oldies.  Some in better states than others.  Diane owns 4, I own 3, parents 3, brother 3, and that doesn't count randoms I get to deal with.

Matt, I own a 97 and yeah Jeeps in general are so so rides, so 4 doors are a must for a family.  My 97 was Diane's first and she had kids.  It was terrible putting kids in/out of it and they were beyond kids seats to boot.  She wants a 4door but we have 2 payments going on so it's not in the near future since they're so expensive.  At least they hold value though if you take care of them.

Rose in a 2000 from here to Chicago one late winter.  Oof was that a "rough ride".  Vowed I wouldn't do that again.  I've driven a 4-door that comes here for work sometimes and it's still stiff.  Then again I find Diane's explorer to be a rough ride too sometimes.

Just traded my 07 Subaru Forester in for a 2017 Forester. AWD is a plus in upstate N.Y., Subaru have a good rep for quality, and my 9&11 yr old boys look like they're going to be roughly my size (6'2"); so rear seat legroom will be a premium in the next 5 years.
First new car I've ever owned and first time I've owned a CVT.  So far I've been besting the Consumer Reports and sticker mileage estimates, which is a pleasant surprise.
Also traded my Wife's 07 Sienna that had 125k for an 07 CRV with 30k. It was a late Great Aunt's car. It's been over maintained based on mileage, though I'm thinking we should get timing belt done just because of the age, not mileage.

My Mustang mentioned above finally went to car heaven the day before Thanksgiving. I got a bad prognosis from my mechanic last week that the engine was totally shot, and replacing it would cost more than the car is worth.

So long story short, this weekend I bought a 2018 Honda Civic over the weekend! I had been looking at them since the summer, and since used Civics from within the last 5 years are only about 3k less than new ones, I decided to buy new. I was hoping to get a 2017 because of potential deals since the 2018s were out, but they weren't negotiating anything, so I decided to go with a 2018 since they were only $100 more. Plus they had the color I wanted in a 2018!

Never had a car payment before (My Mustang was paid for with cash from me, my parents, and my grandparents), so that will probably mean less Star Wars toys, but that's kind of a worthy payoff.

Diane got a Jeep renegade.  It’s a lease while we get through 2 more years of football and a wedding next year for her middle child.  After that we are looking at new Wranglers.  I try to buy US or US made and the Renegadenis the first thing that is neither but I gotta say we both kinda like it.  It’s goofy small and small tires too but 4wd, sorta zippy and small is good when in the city.  I like knowing I don’t have to give much of a **** about anything but fluid changes and brakes too.  Besides paint chips or whatever, it’ll never be out of warranty while we have it so that’s someone else’s issue later.

I finally got rid of my 2006 Chevy Cobalt this year, at the end of July, and picked up a 2017 Hyundai Tucson on lease. It's a decent car with some nice bells and whistles. It has all wheel drive which has come in handy the last few days here in NY.

I'm not going to miss randomly spending hundreds of $$ on the Cobalt. That was a lemon of a car and the best thing I can say about it in the 9.5 years I drove it, it never stranded me on the side of the road. Couldn't make it out of the parking lot a couple times, but it didn't strand me.

Tesla is the official vehicle where I live. These things are as plentiful as Civics. Too many rich Chinese I guess.

Since my Sonata was murdered by a lady that doesn't understand you have to look both ways at a four way stop, I have to find a new car. The trick is I have to share it with my sixteen year old daughter. I'm looking for something new and under $25k that is unique that she could eventually take to college. Right now I'm thinking a Veloster N or a Toyota HCR. She is liking a Dodge Charger though.

Definitely the Charger.
