Title: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Hobbie on March 28, 2012, 10:12 AM
I think I should save my $ for that rumored astromech BAD display that Disney is going to run at SW Weekends.

The rumored BAD thing at Disney sounds interesting to me too.  I'm going to ask someone if they can pick me up some of that while they're there since I'm not going once again.

I'm still hoping that they'll offer a "bag-o-parts" or box set option of all the parts at some point. There is no way anyone is going to be able "collect" these if the parts are just dumped whole-sale into bins.

Whoa, Scott!  I remember Rebelscum posting it as a rumor - but I totally missed that picture!  Those look way awesome!!

The picture is from Disney's "Attraction Magazine" Twitter account...  They just confirmed Scum's rumor today with the pic.

I'm really interested in a set of these...  I love droid repaints.  I don't care if they're from EU or the films even.  A purple R3 unit?  Sure.  I'm into stuff like this...  just hope I can get it somehow.

An interesting thought too...  when the rumors came out of NYTF that Vintage would maybe go away, at least for the time being...  Am I the only one who's happy to see some kind of value-added item maybe being put back into the line?

I like how vintage packaging looks too, don't get me wrong.  It's purdy and all.  But ultimately I've always said I don't buy toys for the packaging.  At today's prices I find anything $8.99 and up needing some kind of value beyond the figure.  30AC gave the coins, and who cares ultimately?  Neat in a full set, but worthless otherwise.

What was nice then was the packaging allowed, and Hasbro utlizied it, to make larger accessories...  Bar pieces, tables, etc.  That was cool.

The BAD line though I was skeptical on, but I really found that the figure was good incentive to A) buy a full wave, and B) buy extras too.  I'd buy a couple army builders and then wind up buying random extras or repacks to complete droids.  I wound up greatly missing BAD as soon as it was gone.  Missed it even more when prices went up even further.

I don't care if it's EU, movie canon, or made up...  I like droid repaints.  I like the unique ones even better, especially if they're from movies, but I'm ok with just a made up deco too.  Especially if it's creative and looks completely feasible as something you COULD have seen in the background of any scene.

Yar, the build a droid line had me buying figures I would have passed on otherwise just to build the droid - and I didn't care because I was happy to build the droid!

I was goofy building them too...  I bought that red clone commander repack a couple times over, especially when he was on sale, just for his part which I can't even recall what it was.

I know that I have a lot of BAD figures though. :)

It helped too that, at that time, they were cranking out great army builders.  Lots of figures in any given wave you'd be ok with multiples of because they were so good.  That CW 2D wave was awesome.

Package them with a Kenner "Droid Factory" style playset/base and it would be like printing money for Disney.  ;)

Glad to see the Rebelscum rumor pan out.  Like others have said, Droid Factory was a great promo and this idea seems to fit with the "build-a-saber" thing that Disney has had previously.  Love the little Mickey and Goofy add-on hats too. :)

I hope they go the route of "stuff all the parts you can in a box for $X"

But I am betting they will go the the Lego Store route where you can build a figure comprising of one of each part at a set price.

Those are great! I love the Yoda hat. I just don't like the hole in the top of their heads. I'm thinking they are going to have bins of parts with bags to put the parts in like the Mr. Potato Head stuff. Since these parts are so small, I wonder how they are going to keep people from stealing the parts.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: JediJman on April 30, 2012, 02:07 PM
I love the bag or box idea, but I think this would be really tough to support at retail.  You would need a pretty small container and/or a really high price point to make that work.  With the pieces being different sizes, would there be a bigger run on heads and legs versus bodies?  And what's the cutoff for these containers?  Can it be overflowing?  Does it need to be sealed all the way?  Unless they adopted a "price per pound" approach, I just don't see it happening.  Lego has a gold mine with their $4 each or 3 for $10 minifigure building station.  It's fun for the kids and those 3-4 pieces probably cost $.25 or less per figure.  I think Disney will go this route - it's just far easier for everyone and probably drives more profit for them.

For the collectors, I hope they make some kind of B-A-D Box set containing one of each unique part.  They could probably make a mint selling those too.

I'm REALLY hoping for this as well - I think it would be silly for them not to offer such an option. I wouldn't even care if the price point was a premium, just give me a way to make ONE purchase and get ALL of the parts and I'm happy. Don't make me have to go to Disney and dig through bins of parts.

I bet we will see these if the astromechs do well.  Just like the Star tours waves not all hitting at once.  I don't think there's a big difference, since they're just additional molded, fixed parts.

I think they said that that pic was of the "first group of parts" or something.  I guess they'll do it like lego does the build-a-figure thing at their stores.  Bins of each type of part (legs, torsos, hats/hair) that you put together and snap in a clamshell for buying at the counter.  Probably $10 or something for a single droid, so you can't just buy a dozen of the different domes or something.

I'll be really snapped if this truly is just an in-store thing for DW....heck, they haven't even announced it yet for Disneyland!  Scalpers will be selling these for $20 per on ebay.  Ugh!  Someone give us an official press release or something!

I'm hoping my Disney connection comes through for me on this one because, well, I just love these...  don't even need the hats.  Just love the droids.  Purple R3?  Cool beans.

Love the colors on those...  No plan of ever going to DW or DL before I die though, so yeah, if I can't find an outlet for these I'm hosed I guess.  :-\

So the scalper goes and builds his own droid the way he likes it then sells it to us. These are going to be some ugly looking droids. HW guys have no sense of decoration. Just look at the crap Mattel makes them buy.

How much do you love them?  If that second RS rumor report (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Disney_Parks_BYO_Droid_Bins_Something_Cooler_144320.asp) is true, there are 25 different heads, meaning there could be as many as 25 basic droids to complete (unless some colors match existing droids).  If the (rumored) $10-12 each price is accurate, it could get pretty spendy to buy them all.

Assuming they're spread out over time, and available for some time (like years), I love them enough that I'd probably buy a wave/set per year...  That's assuming it's like one set available at a time, and not all that dumped at once.

All at once, i'd get picky I think.  The more unique it would be, the more likely I'd be to want it and pass on the rest if they're too similar to existing ones.  Which someo f those are pretty darn close or possibly exact.

The purple R3 dome though, that'd be something I'd want, so that on a purple body/legs would be neat...

Some of those sound very similar to existing ones though, and the pic seems to back that up, so yeah I can pass on one that basically looks like R2-D2 or any of the Queen's droids.  A lot of those could be easy passes really.

That's, of course, assuming you build a figure individually and don't buy them by the set.  There's so many variables to it right now.

Didn't really see one that matched the one on the right, but you can see one that fairly clearly matches the droid on the left in this capture.  You also can see one sort of an in-between an R5 and an R4 there.

This is right, zoom in on the red dome and you can just see the groove/indentation that runs around the bottom.  That purple one that looks like an R5 dome with an R2 'eye' is the R6 dome.  The yellow one you have circled is an R7.

I hope these also come as whole sets per droid ore else this is going to be one of the hardest lines to complete. I love that DF is coming back in some capicty. If it comes back in the line I hope we get the cancelled R-3P0 molded in the Saga colors instead of the crappy BP version. It would also be great to see 8D8 done in BAD since the legs and arms are already toolded.

So many possibilities...

This looks like it will be a cool set of droids.  The hat toppers are silly, but you have to figure they were part of the deal for Disney to pick these up.  And so the little hole in the astromech droid domes finally serves a purpose!

Re: the possibility of a box set - I don't even care if it comes with enough pieces to make 25 droids for the 25 domes. I'll be happy with considering my collection "complete" if I get a set of all of the parts.

It would be neat if they packaged all the parts with a new version of the Droid Factory Playset and put it in a Vintage Deco box - I'd be okay with a $100 - $150 price tag on something like that. Especially if it meant I could just call up the Disney Delivery Service and order a pair....

Are all of these parts totally random or can they be assembled into droids that at least make sense?

I think the parts are all color coordinated enough so you can make multiple droids from the pieces in the sets that make sense.

For example, there is an olive green colored body piece, plus a white body piece that has panels painted the same olive green color.  You can therefore pair either one with an R2 dome with olive green panels, or an R5 dome with olive green striping.  Or switch them around.  Same with multiple parts painted the same royal blue colors or whatever.

I do know that their isn't an equal number of pieces.  There's like 25 domes, but only 12 different bodies.

I think someone mentioned this already, but I am too lazy to give proper credit. This will most likely be like the Lego store in Downtown Disney where there are bins of parts and you make the figure you want, Lego mini figures come in a three pack for 7 or 8 bucks. I would speculate that these droids would sell one at a time. There will be instructions to keep people from jamming parts into the case. (even though that is what is the most fun about the Mr. potato head).
We did the Lego store on our last trip to Disney, and my son loved picking his own figures. I can't imagine what he will do when he sees this.
Chances are though for completests that it will be very expensive to collect all the parts. I would guess two legs, a body, head, and Disney accessory will run about 12 dollars.
I will buy a couple (read as many as my wife will allow) but I can't see getting them all.

What is getting me is that right now it seems like this really is going to be a Disneyworld - Florida exclusive, with no online availability.  It apparently won't even be available in Disneyland, CA!  Makes me think that this really is just an exclusive for Celebration VI that is happening down there - another little temptation for all those SW fans to pay the entrance fee for DW while they're there.  I'm on the verge of outrage...but am still holding out for some sort of official word from Hasbro/Disney about future distribution of these parts.

I can't believe some webmaster hasn't been able to get the official word on these things from the collector's perspective.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

There's been absolutely nothing to say these are going to be any more (or less) limited than other Disney Star Wars items...  At this point I'm not sure what to think and I'm not paniced.  If they become insanely difficult/costly to get, they're simply  not worth it to me.  If anything I think Hasbro's probably likely to make use of the parts that are new and put them out on their own.  These could wind up in the main line in some form at some point.

No need to worry about it right now since there's been very limited info on these out there...  Scum's rumor on them, a blurb in a tourist rag, and a lot of rampant speculation that I'm sure is being misconstrued as "fact" by many, the hobby being what it is at this stage.

If you go back to the original blurb in the Orlando newspaper (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/the-daily-disney/os-disney-fantasyland-test-track-20120427,0,5983367.story), it said they were part of the goodies planned for SW Weekends and were actually debuting this week...

"An array of Disney merchandise was on display Friday. Coming May 10, just before Star Wars Weekends, will be a Droid Factory at Tattooine Traders at Disney's Hollywood Studios. It's a build-your-own Astromech Droid activity resulting in 3-inch figures that fit into other playsets."

If that is true, I'm sure some of the Florida locals (or the Disney blogs) will be able to start posting some news/info by the weekend on the way these are being packaged/sold.

I'm just a little surprised that nothing has come out about these being in Disney - CA.  It could either be because these are only debuting in Florida early due to the Celebration and will later come to CA, or because they are a limited release just to coincide with Celebration and then carry through a few months more.  I think (and hope) the first option is more likely.

I will remain on the verge of outrage for now.

Dunno why that pic makes this all the more impressive and desirable, but it does.  I'd like at least one of every torso as a complete figure. :(

Okay, that blue body in the back is waaay to similar to the R3-M3 BAD, and the red body on the left basically is R2-R9 from the Queen's ship, right?

Other than that, very nice!

I hope these hit Disneyland...and soon.  I'll be there for a few days at the end of this month.  If not however, I'll live.  They're cool and the idea is great, but man, I've got a lot of astromechs.

Ah man, how is any average collector going to get all of these? eBay will be the only avenue, hopefully some sellers will sell complete lots, I just fear the price. They look great!

Interesting. So you get clam shells to store the figure in with a sticker to name to droid. So no bucket of parts. Just one or two complete droids. This will be like buy custom figures on ebay.

I still wish we knew more about Hasbro's plans for 2013.  I don't want to go all ape-crazy buying up Disney BAD parts for a premium price only to find out at SDCC in July that many of these same parts will be recycled/reused in a new 2013 BAD basic figure line.  :-X
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

So if you make 25 unique droids (one for each dome), get 24 of them in 2-packs and 1 in a single pack - that will run you $240.35

And in my case, I'd want to get two of each unique droid.... bringing the total to $480.70.

I just checked Spirit Airlines and from Atlantic City, NJ -> Orlando, FL, the cheapest rate I can get is $84 one-way - which means that is $168 round-trip.

According to one site - a one-way taxi ride from the airport to WDW is $55, so that means renting a compact car for the day would probably be better, let's just figure $100 for that.

That means the grand total for getting these would be approximately $750 - $800 total - for 50 figures, which means $15 - $16 a droid.

Almost would be better to just drive the 17 hours, live out of the car, go to the park, drive back - maybe get a hotel one night just to shower. But even that I estimate will cost me roughly $220 in gas and that's with me taking my Prius.

The biggest thing that's stopping me is that what happens if you get there and they don't have all of the parts in stock? I can seriously see there being a run on R6, R8 and R9 domes as we speak.

Hense you can see how much of a pain in the ass buying Disney exclusives for everyone is.

Disneyland is a little easier but still a major pain going to parks, dealing with parking and fighting thru capacity crowds during the summer because of Carsland and the rededication of Disney California Adventure.

Welp, count me out on these I guess... if they offered a set with each part for like $100 maybe I'd be down but I really just want some of the "generic" droids (i.e. R2-D2 with different colors), then maybe a few of the newer R6 and R9 parts.

Don't forget to add admission to the park into your tally.  Currently $90.

Good point - I meant to put it in there, but forgot - so that means it's more like $900 for a set of 50 droids which would mean roughly $18/droid.

Or if I drove it - which I am contemplating...

$480 for the droids
$220 for the gas
$100 to get in the park
$50 tolls
Total: $850 / 50 = $17/figure

I could shave a few bucks off if I just doubled up the duplicates into the same 2-packs so instead of it being 24 2-packs and 2 single packs, it would just be 25 2-packs - that brings the droid price down to $473.

Keeping in mind that the droid purchase prices don't include tax either....  :-X

The one positive to just driving it would be that I wouldn't have to worry about how to get all of them home on the plane.

I just wish they had released, as an option, a box set of all 70 parts....  >:(

Hense you can see how much of a pain in the ass buying Disney exclusives for everyone is.

I never had any doubt of how much of a pain in the ass it was Paul.... :)

I'll second Jeff's thought...  What's 2013's plans?

That said, if these are around at C6, I'm going to ask Jim about hooking me up with a 2-pack.  :)  I'm going to pick the parts I want the most, and be content with that.

Well, I'm glad I never had any interest in Disney/Star Tours exclusive items, because this definitely seems like a pain in the ass for collectors. Having a box of all 71 parts available would have been cool, but oh well. It's still a cool feature and a few droids would make great (and unique!) souvenirs from Disney.

more news on this:

someone asked about the longevity of this and the response was:

Quote
There is a permanent fixture in the Tatooine Traders shop at the exit of Star Tours. You can’t miss it as it faces the attraction exit. In keeping with the storyline of the shop, it is modeled after young Anakin Skywalker’s workbench. I just returned from the opening this morning and it looks awesome!

someone asked about disneyland:

Quote
Currently, we are only introducing the Droid Factory at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Provided it’s popular with guests, we may consider additional locations.

and when asked about the stuff all the parts you want in a box like Mr. Potato head:

Quote
One of the original concepts was to model it after the create-your-own Mr. Potato Head from Once Upon a Toy. Yet, it was decided to build individual figures to add a more personal connection (you can create a unique figure that you can name).

but really I am sure he meant to say:

Quote
We knew we could milk Star Wars fans of all their money by going this route.

If you got a list with each part identified of what you want to build, and just check it all off, I'm sure it would be manageable. Remember, if you go, and time it during the week, and before May ends, I'm not sure it would be all THAT bad, even if it took all day, the only thing I'd want to do before I leave is check out the new Star Tours, other than that, there's nothing there that would be of any interest to me...

I've really forgotten to mention the biggest obstacle - the wife.  :-X

the wife really is the biggest obstacle  :'(, but cheaper way might be to find people on the boards, in the area, that might be willing to pick them up for you and ship it out.  Not sure what the etiquette is for helping a fellow collector out on something like this is, especially considering the price for all those parts.  I personally hope these come out to CA and won't soley be a FL Diseney thing, Star Trader has been good luck for me at times.  Able to score the only TVC Maul I've seen on pegs there, and with AP discount wound up being regular price.

Okay, if anyone is going to be heading down for these, I'm in for probably at least half of them + a reasonable markup & shipping.  I'm in the southwest, and while I hit Disneyland in California probably once a year, Florida just isn't happening.  They've really gotta consider bagging up a selection for bulk phone orders!

Also, the picture shown is not really adding up with the 71 parts/25 domes numbers that have been going around.  There's 23 domes there, but only about 50 total parts.  Kind of an odd breakdown.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

Well - I am still shocked - but the wife was okay with this AND she let me cash in AMEX rewards points to make it so I'm flying down there Saturday morning this weekend, staying at the Disney Swan w/access to the park 1hr early on Sunday morning and flying back late Sunday night - the hotel and airfare is costing me a little over $310 after my points are spent...

So I'm going to do my best to score two complete sets for myself, a set for Captain Piet and extra R6s, R8s and R9s.

Here's hoping that 1. there aren't any limits and 2. there aren't any shortages of parts by mid-day Saturday....

I really don't care about the hats to be honest - yeah - I saw that the Yoda Ears hat isn't there, but I really don't care.

What concerns me, and I've asked the Marketing Guy who wrote that blog for clarification, he indicates in one of his update comments (that I didn't see until AFTER I booked everything) that the exclusive DOMES aren't there yet either - a nice CONVENIENT detail to have left out of the original story.

So I have a comment that is "awaiting moderation" right now asking for clarification. And don't worry - once it posts you're gonna know EXACTLY which comment is mine.

Since I can't cancel the trip, I'm locked in to going. Until I'm flying back empty handed without my R6, R8 or R9 droids, I'm going to remain optimistic that I'll either be able to buy what I want for my collection OR that since I made the trip to the park, they'll be willing to help work something out to help me acquire the remaining droids or droid parts.

Okay, that really sucks that some of the KEY parts they are advertising won't be there, and may not be there for weeks or even months!  That's pretty shocking that they would advertise this stuff without making a distinction between what is 'coming soon' and what will be there for the Celebration.  I mean, that really, really sucks, and they had BETTER agree to send you all the parts you are missing out on when they are eventually available.  You're probably not going to be the only one who gets there and wonders where all the other parts are.

I wouldn't go that far... LOL

The moderator of the blog blocked my comment/question from last night - so what's on there now is a VERY watered down version. Hopefully there will be clarification from the article author today.

I'll take some pictures and report back as best I can.

My thinking is that when I get there tomorrow, I'll head over to the park and scout things out and try to see how many droids I can get for myself. Once I know that, I'll report back on the complete list of parts that are actually available.

GOOD LUCK IN THE HUNT!

I want all of these but the new domes first and foremost. This is such a cluster to collect, I think a new website will be needed just to keep track of all of the parts to track down to complete the set or series. A photo archive for this will be really fun...

Adam Pawlus has a good article estimating how much it would most likley cost to complete...$1k.

Adam Pawlus has a good article estimating how much it would most likley cost to complete...$1k.

Nah, Pete already did the math and figured out it'd cost about $900 for two sets of the 25 different domes - and that's including the trip down there.  ;)

Got a totally non-answer in response to my post on that blog. Typical marketing person...

You either launched with 71 parts (minus those four hats) or you didn't - it's a simple question.

He took my question to mean are you adding more parts, I fully expect that to be the case and I have no problem making this an annual type trip where I get "caught up" each year.

Oh well - not going to stress over it - gonna go down there, get as many unique droids as I can for my collection - make sure I walk away with at least 2x of each unique part and I'll be happy.

I'll take as many pics as I can, in addition to trying to video record a bit of the experience at "Anakin's Workbench" as it is described.

I can post to the forum via my BB so expect updates as I'm there too.

So based on my criteria, I need to make 26 droids for a set - this is because from the list there were 13 trunks and 25 domes, if there had been 26 domes then that would have made more sense, but I digress, so I just arbitrary picked the R8 dome to grab an extra of so I could make a 26th droid that used the R7 Trunk White w/Blue Details...

If they have all the parts, this is what I'll be making (x2) for myself. So I plan on bringing a checklist to the store...

Here is the breakdown by part...

1x Each Unique Dome x25
1x Extra R8 Dome - Black w/ Silver Details Dome

R2 Trunks - 10 different ones

Impressive. Most impressive.

I guess I'd be interested in the R2, R3, R4 & R5s. Still a lot of loot.

Pete's devotion is, indeed, impressive. In seven years of collecting locally with him, this is nothing new to me.
This promotion is something less than impressive. I hope they're ready for Pete in Disney. Somehow, I doubt the Mouse will be able to hang with my boy.

This pic from the blog confuses me:

Why is there two blue bodies?  One looks just like R3-M3 from the original BAD, and the second, lighter blue looks new.

Oooooo...thanks for posting!

The display is smaller, and the selection weaker than I would have guessed.  There's a real lack of bodies on display, and some are missing altogether.  I think our boy Pete is going to wipe them out.  Hopefully he can get the manager or whomever to go in the back and bring out some fresh boxes to fill out his purchases!

Hopefully there are bags/boxes of stock to replenish these bins and when I explain how many I'm looking to buy - they let me draw from those instead.

My experience with Disney is there is always more in the back. I've seen it at a point where one thing bought and the CM immediately fill the spot. The mouse will not turn down a buck.

Ultimately, that is my hope - considering how much I'm looking to buy, they will "magically" find a lot of the parts I'm looking for.

I'm trying to remain as optimistic as possible right now, I'll let everyone know much later today whether that optimism won out or not.

Ok so here is my preliminary report.... I'm gonna write up something proper later tonight. I'm on my phone so please excuse any typos.

First the bad: no R6, R8 or R9 domes, the R3w/Red was also MIA. They ran out of black right legs before I got there, so that made things limiting. The park employees were sympathetic to the problem, but could do nothing to help. Nor were they willing to take "cash for their troubles" and get me parts/droids at a later date. So I only ended up with 13 unique droids out of my desired 26.

The good: the staff was very friendly and happy to help. They were helping me throughout the entire time, grabbing parts that I needed from the other side of the bench, holding the droids behind the counter, etc...

The set up is very cramped, you can barely fit two people at the workstation and it's configured for two people to be building at the same time. You have to wait in line to get to the station, but there were more onlookers than actual people looking to buy.

Parts are shipped in assortment bags, kind of like legos based on how one team member described it to me. The problem is that the colors are all mixed and YES some pieces could be considered "chase" - for example she said that if a bag of right legs has 5 white w/blue markings but only one or two of the black w/silver. (I'll pause for a second while everyone reading this groans)

The shortage of the all-blue and all-black right legs was compounded by the fact that apparently they received twice as many left leg bags as right leg ones.

The did tell me they get new parts every day, so my hope is that when I'm there first thing tomorrow morning, there are more all black right legs in stock.

More in a bit, my cell phone battery is dying...

Naming your droid: this isn't as "cool" as I thought it would be - essentially you get a sticker sheet with white letters/numbers/symbols on a black background and you do-it-yourself. I didn't waste any time with this, I got 24 sheets to cover all my 2-packs, the sets I grabbed for others. There are anywhere from two to seven of each letter/number/symbol on the sheet, with X, Y, & Z getting only 2 appearances each, while the dash character stick is in there seven times. There are five Rs in case you were wondering.

I'm going to rest a bit and head back to the park. When I get back tonight I'll have pictures of the droids I built and of the Tatooine Traders store.

Thanks for the news!

For the moment, I'll leave aside the insanity of short-packing parts for a product that is only available at a single location in the entire world.  Like that's really going to keep all us consumers coming back day-after-day to get what we're looking for.

The unequal number of legs has got to be some sort of early-run mishap.  I can see why they're doing these in jumble-bags, but they are seriously running the risk of the giant pile-o-R2-D2 parts with no room left for those new rare parts.

Well, hopefully they'll be popular enough for an expansion, both in the store, and to California.  I just hope that they see a positive with the display, rather than a headache.  I can't imagine they will want to have to permanently station a droid attendant on the floor.

The naming thing sounds very tedious.  Nice of them to just give out sheets so you can do it later rather than clogging the line.

Maybe there's not an unequal number of legs. maybe some shrewd person decided to make a certain style "rare" to cash in on this madness.

So you actually get to handle the parts yourself? What stops fast handed thieves from stealing the parts? I mean, how attentive are the employees/security?

Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

There were actually two attendants at the station at all times, one to watch each side of the station since there can be 2 people building at any time.

Flow of people actually building was pretty light - I feel that they priced them way too high to be an impulse purchase. The last thing parents want to do is sit there and wait for the privilege to spend $12 while little Johnny hems and haws over what parts to use.

The staff was extremely help and polite to me today, so I have nothing but wonderful things to say about them, but I worry that with Star Wars weekends and Celebtration VI coming, the number of folks looking to build droids is definitely going to climb, and the amount of courtesy and assistance they showed me will not be sustainable.

I'm going back first thing in the morning in the hopes that they have received a few more parts that I need.

I'll give another update tomorrow.

Well - they got more parts this morning, but unfortunately, no new non-white right legs. So I bought a few more to help me build up the library of parts I'll want for my eventual R6, R8 and R9s.

Heading back to the hotel now to check out. Will be flying out tonight.

Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

Please remember this is not aimed at consumers or collectors. Just like the build a lightsaber before it, this is aimed as a fun experience for tourists to do on vacation. It's not designed for the obsessed collector. People paid $28 for a custom lightsaber when they could have had all the parts in a box for about the same price down at walmart. It's the experience of the activity they are paying for not the item. No tourist is going to care that they are missing a certain leg or dome. 99.9999% of people doing this have no idea what all the options are anyway. The cast members are always stationed there to help move the line along, help the kids build their droid (lightsaber) and to give them a fun experience. How cool is it as a kid to go to WDW, then come home with something that they made there?

Correct - that is the pricing.

I went with all 2-packs just so the 2nd droid only cost me $7 more.

Very true. The staff however are fully aware collectors are coming.

And I must add - being super friendly and polite with the staff went a long way.

They were very accomodating and it wasn't just for me, on my visit this morning, there was a member of a near-local R2 builders club who came hoping to grab one of each part. While he was disappointed none of the R6, R8 or R9 domes were there, he just made the most of it like I did and I watched as the staff accomodated him just as nicely and professionally as they accomodated me.

While I did come away with a lot fewer droids and parts as I had hoped, I don't regret doing this and I am hoping to make a return visit for a much longer stay in October - hopefully by then, all the remaining parts will be in circulation.

Eventually it will 25, but right now it's only 15 to go with the 15 domes they have.

That's if you follow strict combinations of dome-to-body-color-to-leg-color.

Right now that is extra difficult due to the lack of black, blue & red right legs. They have plenty of left ones, but haven't been sent right ones in two days according to the staff. Probably in a day or two that will be fixed.

the staff at Disney is really great.  We went there about 2 years ago and had a blast all day long and all the workers truly loved their job.

Then we went to Sea World the very next day.  Wow what a difference.  It seemed like everyone working there was about to kill themselves...

Disney works to get you on and off the rides quickly and keep you entertained during the wait. Compared to Six Flags where they let you on the ride, stand around for five minutes talking, check the seat belts, stand around some more, then dispatch the vehicle. The vehicle is already back by the time the next vehicle is checking seat belts.

I am shocked these did not pop up on eBay yet as I have been looking. I hope some etailors or Disney themselves can help out collecting these. This will be a long haul to collect the series but eventually I can see these showing up at Toy shows and comic cons at jacked up prices.

As of right now, Disney has no plans on offering the parts in boxes or in any other format than you coming to the park, standing in line, standing in front of the work bench and making your own droid(s). As far as Disney is concerned a major part of the program is the "personal experience" you get from digging through the parts and making the droid you want.

That being said, since they have indicated that it will be a long term installation at the Tatooine Traders, I don't think that building your own will ever go away.

But while I was there on Saturday in my marathon building session that lasted 2.5-3 hours, there were several parents with kids who, while the kid wanted to do it, the parents were like "I've gotta wait for my son to pick through all of those parts to build a droid and THEN pay $12 for it? No way, we're on a schedule to see this whole park in one day, are you sure I can't just buy Johnny a box of parts?"

Now of course, I'm paraphrasing - but very few parents seemed to be willing to "wait" for one kid in their party to build a droid. And I think over time, that feedback from families will one day result in taking the 71 parts, adding an additional R2-D2 dome (to make it 72) and then splitting those parts up into two boxes of 36 parts each and letting a parent quickly grab one or both boxes, make the quick purchase and be on to the next attraction.

It's like what Paul was talking about with the Build-your-own-Lightsaber station (another "permanent" fixture of the store), you can either let your kid spend time building the lightsaber OR the store carries all of the same lightsaber products that every other store already carries - so if a kid wanted a lightsaber both options are available.

So in the long-run, I could totally see them EVENTUALLY making an option for box sets. I could totally even see them doing it with unique color-schemes on the parts in the box sets to make them a desireable purchase to someone who already picked up a lot of the parts via the build-your-own-option...

Yeah, if I were collecting them I would go for one of each part.  Probably some reuse of bodies or heads where needed to make a full droid that kind of fits together.

Yeah, if I were collecting them I would go for one of each part.  Probably some reuse of bodies or heads where needed to make a full droid that kind of fits together.

If you are looking for one of each part (minimally) you would end up with (eventually) 25 droids....

The break-down of domes is:

5x R2 (silver w/orange, red, blue, or green & red w/silver)
2x R3 (clear w/purple or red) (red not available yet)
3x R4 (white w/purple or blue & green w/white)
3x R5 (white w/red or green & black w/silver)
3x R6 (white w/purple or orange & black w/silver) (not available yet)
3x R7 (black w/silver, orange w/silver, silver w/blue)
3x R8 (white w/black or orange & black w/silver) (not available yet)
3x R9 (green w/silver, blue w/silver or red w/silver) (not available yet)

Then there are 13 trunks - 10 R2 trunks, 3 R7 Trunks (the R7 Trunk style is also used in R8s)

Then there are 10 styles of left/right legs

Then there are 5 styles of middle legs

And finally, for the Disney touch - there are 8 "hats" - four colors of mouse ears (which are available now) and a Yoda Ears Hat, Pirate Hat, Fedora & Goofy Hat (which are not available now)

So 25 droids for one each of the domes could result in having multiples of every other part (trunk & legs) except for one trunk (since 13x2 = 26, which is 1 more than the number of domes).

So like what Rob said - a MAJOR headache to getting a "complete" collection.

Yep...

So, anyone heading to Disney willing to pick up one of each droid part for me?   :)

I would wait a bit before trying for a complete set or cashing in a favor to ask someone to help you. While I don't regret  doing what I did, I really wish that all the domes had been there or at least minimally that there weren't problems with the availability of Black/Blue/Red right legs.

If I had been able to make the bodies I want to eventually stick R6, R8 & R9 domes on, I could have built all of them and put "temporary" domes on those bodies based on current stock and then when someone else was able to help me, just get them focus on the 10 missing domes and I wouldn't care what bodies they built to go with them....

You know - looking at the blow-up of the parts bin picture I feel less and less bad - there doesn't appear to be a single right black leg in that Right Leg bin (the leg bin closest to the domes)

So I wonder if they EVER had Black w/Silver Right Legs at the workstation....

Yep...

So, anyone heading to Disney willing to pick up one of each droid part for me?   :)

I know somebody that goes twice a year.

And gets the wife to agree to it by taking her with him.

Plus they sell alcohol there, a great ally in unauthorized spending.

Excellent, although if I'm reading the last few posts right, I'd assemble 25 droids JUST to use each part once, and they're $18.95 per pair...

This seems to be about a $250 endeavor, and I'm not so sure I care about generic droids that much.

Would it cost less without the mickey hats or does it not work by the part but by the droid only?  I know I wouldn't care about those.

You don't have to put Mickey Ears on your droid if you don't want, but it's not like they reduce the cost of the droids if you don't take them - no matter what the single packs are $11.95 and the double packs are $18.95.

I put mouse ears on all of mine for that very reason.

I spent some time tonight looking over the colors of the droids from Disney and comparing them to the previously issued Astromech B-A-Ds...

Surprisingly the only body that appears to be identical to anything we've gotten from Hasbro to date - is the R2 Trunk in white w/blue highlights - and that matches pretty closely with the R2-D2 recently issued in the Royal Starship Droids DTF pack. The white w/blue legs though are a lighter color blue then the dark blue used for R2 in the Royal Droids set.

The White w/Green pieces of R2-N3 from that same pack are a darker forest green, compared to the lighter color green of the Disney white w/green pieces.

And lastly from the Royal Starship Droids set - the all red body R2 is in a darker/deeper red color than the all red body pieces that are part of the Disney BAD set. Just like the Orange in the Disney is more of a Yellowish-Orange, the red in the Disney set is more of a Orangeish-Red in color.

The White w/Red color we got from the Vintage R5-D4 is the same as the Red coloring of the White w/Red parts from the Disney BAD set, but the R5-D4 trunk also has blue highlights in addition to red ones, so the R2 Trunk in white w/Red highlights from the Disney set is unique in that regard.

The only other close call would be with the DTF figure G8-R3 - which is more of a "Yellow" color than the "Yellowish-Orange" color in the Disney pieces. The legs on G8-R3 also feature black highlights mixed in with the yellow ones, whereas the Disney legs are just White w/the same yellowish-orange.

Lastly, there was some comments based on the group shot of droids from the back of the packaging that the all blue trunk and legs were the same color blue as the Legacy R3 BAD. I'm happy to say that the blue trunk and legs in the Disney set are a much darker blue than the Legacy blue R3.

So while some of the parts have similar colors to previously issued BAD parts from Hasbro, they aren't exactly the same colors - so, for better or worse, borrowing a phrase from Adam Pawlus, the Disney parts are just new enough to make you mad...  :-\

No it's still there - in the Tatooine Traders, the Build-a-Lightsaber display is on your left right as you enter the store.

Conversely if you're coming from the Star Tours exit, you'll come down the ramp and if you hang a right the Build-a-Droid station will be directly in front of you and if you go around that station to the right, the Build-a-Lightsaber display will be on your right, before you exit the store.

I hope that makes sense...

thanks Pete for the time you took to share the info. Just looking at your picutres gives me an early idea of what I need to hunt for. I like some of the combos alot some look like droids we already have which tells me I may not want every single part.

At some point a master picture/combo list is really needed for this line.

That was a great review, well done Pete!

I can't imagine the headache I might feel trying to track all the different droids to be made, if I was there, I'd probably make a handful of droids, and then slam a beer for each one.

If I have the time this weekend - I'll try my hand at starting such a resource.

Based on the Curto part list, I have everything except for the Black w/Silver right leg, 10 domes and the four additional "funny" hats. So that's 56 parts out of 71 that I can photograph and put up somewhere.

I can't imagine the headache I might feel trying to track all the different droids to be made, if I was there, I'd probably make a handful of droids, and then slam a beer for each one.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that, although, I would definitely be totally blitzed if I did that for each of the droids I built... LOL

Definitely - it does look like I did come up short the R3 clear dome w/red highlights - someone who had droids built on Friday was able to get that dome.

The really strange thing is that the domes that came in on Sunday did not include that dome at all...  :-\

I was interested in your comments about the different tones of the red, blue, and green parts.  Any chance you might be able to do a side-by-side with the previous R2-R9, R3-M3, etc?

I was interested in your comments about the different tones of the red, blue, and green parts.  Any chance you might be able to do a side-by-side with the previous R2-R9, R3-M3, etc?

I took a couple quick shots just now to demonstrate a couple of questions I have seen in various places regarding the color variances. I have to dig out my R3-M3 from my Imperial display case, but I had handy R5-D4 from my Tatooine display and the droids from the Royal Starship Droids box set (since they were all still on my desk)...

So first up: "Can you make an R5-D4?" Well sort-of. If it matters to you that R5-D4 actually has blue highlights, then, technically the answer is "no"...

As you can see in the pic above, the White w/Red R5 droid (on the right) I built at Disney is ONLY White, Red with a few hints of Silver. The R5-D4 (on the left) we got in the Vintage line last year also has deep-blue highlights so that he is more screen accurate with the droid from the movie.

Next up - I mentioned specifically the shade of green from R2-N3 (left) vs. White w/Green R2 pieces at Disney (right) ...

As you can see the green used for R2-N3 is a darker green than the green of the Disney pieces. The Green from the EP1 12" R2-A6 is somewhere in between these two figures, so you could, if you were so inclined, make the droid on the right and name him for your packaging "R2-A6" and call it a day...

Lastly, let's look at R2-R9 vs. the All-Red body parts offered at the Disney Build-a-Droid experience... R2-R9 is on the left and the All-Red Droid from Disney is on the left...

As you can see R2-R9 is cast in a much darker red colored plastic than the Disney parts. In fact, as I mentioned in another post, the "Red" color at Disney is more like an Orange-Red, with the "Yellow" color of their parts being more like an "Orange-Yellow". I took the side shot to show how where highlight colors are (or are not) present on the Hasbro part is not necessarily where they put highlight colors on the Disney part - focus specifically on the lower-part of the leg near the foot and you'll see what I mean...

Depending on your point of view, this is the nice thing about the Disney parts, they are mostly different colors from what we've gotten before.

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, I took them with my phone. I'll dig out the digital camera later this week and see if I can take better shots.

So, being that the torso is BAD, I wonder what the price would be if someone were to build a monster droid (with four arms)?  Would it be more, or would it be the same if the person skipped out on a middle leg and hat?

My guess is if a kid made a droid with four arms, middle leg and hat, Disney is going to let him do it. It is about the experience and magic of making something at the Magic Kingdom. Disney isn't going to quival over fifty cents of plastic because a kid was creative.

Yeah, but what about a collector trying to squeeze more pieces in?  I wonder if there are instructions or guidelines at the station that tell you how to build the droid (i.e. use 2 legs, 1 head, etc.).

Actually, they are. There were several kids who tried to put four legs onto their torsos and the attendant had to get them to fix it and pointed at the diagram at the station (shown in the picture above).

They apparently even had someone arguing the point because the spot on the clamshell to hold the figure is much taller than the droid itself, so the person was arguing that it must be so you can fit a droid with four legs.

Thanks Pete - I thought that might be the case.  Good for Disney - this is one of those cases where I'm glad to see a retailer hold their ground.  If every kid started building 4-legged droids, there would very likely be a shortage for others.

Here's another thought - will SW Celebration VI have these as part of the Droid Factory Swap this year?  Sounds like that was a hit previously, so do they plan to bring the new parts in for people this time around (Maybe sans the Disney caps and such)?

Here is a rundown of the droids I made for myself...

R2s & R3s:

R4s:

R5s:

(note the one on the far right with one black leg and one blue leg... I made this droid just so I walked away with at least one of every part they had in stock)

R7s:

The R2 w/the all-blue body is for future use with the R9 blue w/silver dome.

The R5 w/the all-green body is for future use with the R9 green w/silver dome.

I was going to make the R2 dome in silver w/red on an all red body, but they sold out of Right Red legs while I was there too.

The R7 trunk with all blue legs is for the R8 dome that's coming that's Blue w/Silver.

Yeah - for the most part they went very generic with the coloring of the parts so as to maximize the number of possible combinations.

While going through the park and looking for stuff to bring home as gifts for others, a horrible thought occurred to me - Disney is notorious for having multiple series of any one of its lines. If you look for example of the Disney characters dressed as Star Wars characters, the ones I was seeing were from Series 4 and Series 5 - these are like waves/assortments, and while they aren't as vast as the 71 parts we're currently looking at, I am horrified by the possibility of them releasing more and more parts each year.

If they do that, hopefully, they will have an option that allows someone to easily supplement their existing library of parts with just the new parts.

Thanks for the update Epocherbs - any chance you could give a quick run-down of the parts you found? Specifically, were the R3 domes with Red Highlights back in stock and/or did they get in more Red/Blue/Black/Green right legs?

I'm guessing that since you indicate that you only made 14 droids that they were down one dome from a week ago when I was able to pick up 15 unique domes...

Hey guys, I'd like to give a huge public shout out to Pete, as I was one of the collectors he was so generous with in finding time to help out during his epic, and already legendary, Disney quest!  He gave me a great deal, and I can't thank him enough for all his help!

I received the  droids yesterday, and they were impeccably packaged.  My brief review is that the cases & cards are very nice, and the droids look really good.  I suffered from the lack of available parts, and missed out on the red R3 dome, and still need a set of black legs to complete one of my droids.  My favorites are the all-green droid, the all red R2 dome (It would be great to get all blue, black, or yellow R2 domes), and the blue R4 dome.  I hope they get more creative with the droid colors in the future.

Disney has got to be making a fortune on these.  By ordering them in bulk bags, and not having to pay the added assembly & packaging fees by having us do the work, I'd be surprised if Hasbro is getting even close to a dollar per part.  I have two more batches of droids coming from friends traveling down this weekend, and in early July.  Hopefully, some of the other parts I need will make an appearance.

Once/If the hit DL, expect these guys to show up on ebay in force.  Even with the admission increase, there will still be close to a million people with annual passes, so they can stop by the park and pick up a few droids whenever they're in the mood.  Heck, I'm sure more than a few will be more than happy to recoup some of the park's cost increase by ebaying exclusive park merchandise, including these droids.  That very idea is probably part of the reason this concept hasn't made it to DL yet.

This price increase is the biggest ever. AP passes when up $50-$150. (they go up every 4-6 months) They are expected to keep going up until the number of AP passes reduces. The current resort infrastructure can't handle it.

Attendance is going up and its expected to be packed this summer with the re-dedication of Disney California Adventure. Parking is expected to be so bad this summer that cast members are going to have to be shuttled from Angels Stadium. A new parking structure is suppose to be built soon. I wouldn't be suprised to see a third theme park within the next ten years.

Some updates on the "state of things" at Tatooine Traders and the Disney Droid Factory:

1) They have changed it so you can only buy single packs for $11.95. The double pack for $18.95 option has been removed. The sign has been taken down and the 2-pack packaging is gone.

2) At this time they are down to ONLY green middle legs (no white, black, blue or red) and NO novelty hats at all (which since the launch has only been mouse ears) - they are totally sold out of those.

3) While after my visit they did seem to get in more R3 domes in Clear w/Red highlights, they are once again completely sold out of R3 clear domes.

While I expected there to be a scarcity of parts, I didn't expect things to be this bad....

Here's hoping that the parts situation is either resolved or Disney starts to think about offering box-sets of parts as alternative means of getting Droid Factory pieces. I know they are going for the "experience" but if the "experience" is tainted by an EXTREME lack of the person's favorite colors, what's the point?

Just my $0.02.

Yeah - I saw them too - kinda disappointed that they changed them up - but glad I have enough 2-packs to cover the eventual "complete" set of droids I'm hoping to have.

Here's hoping that this new vendor is working on a 2-pack as well - cause the 2-pack pricing was more in-line with where these things should be priced.

The latest news out of Disney Studios is that the Build-a-Droid attraction will be shutting down tomorrow (27-June-2012) and it will not be re-opening until they get in more parts - presumably when the new R6, R8 & R9 domes come in along with replenishment of the novelty hats, the new novelty hats and more middle legs.

Man, imagine the worst-case situation where Disney decides to scrap the BAD station because it's just too much hassle.  Pete could retire easily on the fortune he'd accrue selling off his droids (if his OCD would let him sell his that is :P).  ;)

I cannot believe the prices these things are already going for on eBay - $190 for 5 droids? (http://www.ebay.com/itm/PICK-FIVE-Star-Wars-DROID-FACTORY-Disney-Weekends-TOURS-Exclusive-Build-Figure-/120938447542?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item1c287e42b6)   ::)

LOL - yeah - OCD kinda gets in the way...

The funny thing is that I have a total of 22 droids I'm happy with, 2 droids that I'd be okay with if I never got anymore parts and then 3 more droids that I built to serve as bodies for the yet-to-be-released domes -- times two. Technically, I do have a "spare" set, but my plan was always to have a set of 50 droids that I could keep in 25 of those 2-packs and then another set of the same 50 droids that I could display loose with all of my other open/loose figures.

So, yeah, I could totally make a good amount of $$$ selling those 27 droids (which are all complete with six pieces each).

Where I'm "short" in parts is definitely still around the all-black and all-red body. My goal with the 50 droid set was that it was to be made up of 2x of each of the 25 unique domes and at a minimum 3x of each unique body part.

In hindsight, I just wish I had built a lot more back in May than I did.

re: eBay prices - I can't believe how much these are going for either, it's insane.

There are couple in there that aren't exactly the way I wanted them, but what you see represents at least one of every part - and in many cases two of every part.

To be done with the R2, R3, R4, R5 & R7 domes there are another eight droids I want to make. I had hoped to be done with those domes before the R6, R8 and R9 domes came in, but I don't think that's going to be possible now.

Well - a collector local to the Disney area was able to get me 21 of the remaining 22 2-packs I needed for my "complete" collection of two-each of 50 different droids (100 droids total).

And he's going back in September and will be looking to get me the last 2-pack that he couldn't make for me then.

So short of Disney releasing another 71 parts, I really can't see myself ever going back down there for droid factory, I'd much rather find someone who wouldn't mind scoring an extra $100 for their troubles and save all of the travel expenses.

Once I get all the droids in-hand, I'll take some more pictures and post them....

My buddy Jim, who attended C6, got me 3 BAD's from the shop, and they're outstanding looking. :)

The mini R5 head was gone, but such is life.  :(  He's my hook-up anyway since he goes often so I'm sure he'll help me out on those when they restock.  I dig the new heads.  They're neat, and add something unique to the Astromech shelves.

Personally, I don't care at all for the R7's.  I wouldn't mind adding a blue R4 and black/white R8 to my collection.  A friend of mine hooked me up with a red R3 and a blue R8.  I guess we've already gotten some type or variation of most of those droids already so maybe that's why most of them don't really appeal to me.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Jesse James on September 12, 2012, 02:38 AM
Thanks to my buddy Jim, I now have 3 Disney BAD's...  All new domes, as I'm pretty strictly going to stick with only  new domes on these...  I think...

Anyway, I got the black weird dome with the ridge, and the white/black body & legs.  Makes a pretty slick looking astromech but I can't tell what the hell this dome's "eye" is.  Everyone has a pretty easily discernable front except this one Dome, but I dig the silver ridge on the top for some reason.

I got a solid green bodied one with the quasi-R2-ish dome with the centered eye...  This is easily my favorite because A) there's no body close to this color in the movies that I recall, and B) the dome's just really neat looking and different.  Looks like I found my new favorite droid for a fictional pilot figure or Keyan Farlander to get.

I also got the orange-ish and white body and legs, with the same dome as that black/white droid but with the orange trim.

The mini-R5 type domes were all gone but those are cool too and I hope to get some of those on my buddy's next trip.  A big thanks to Jimree for helping me get ANY of these though, since a trip to Disney isn't on my plate for any time soon.  Took time out of his vacation to do this for me and I totally appreciate it.

He also helped me complete a BAD Silver Death Star Droid, the blue R3 unit, and the blue R7 with the rocket pods at Hasbro's part swap, so yeah, Jim really got me a ton of stuff on his time and dime.

Ridiculous pix there Pete.  Well done!  I've gotta ask though, how did you come up with the various droid "designs" on some of them?  I have a pic of all 71 pieces where I've laid out the various designs I want to eventually make out of this line, but I've only chosen to make 25 different droids - 1 for each unique dome, matched up to like colors as best as possible for the remaining pieces.

For example, in your R9s, why the blue-domed yellow bodied guy?  Short on specific pieces, or just artistic licensing on your part, or was there a strategy to shoot for six per on most types?  Just curious.  I love that you've got so many different flavors, as I was having trouble on selecting a small handful of my choices (red head with red body or white body w/ red trim, for example).  You've got 'em both in there so it gives me a good visual idea of which setup I'd prefer.  Thanks!
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

Ultimately, I wanted as a minimum:

2x each dome
3x of every other part

That was about it - obviously I have more than 3x of several parts, but when it came to the white w/yellow R2 trunk, there were only really two uses since the white/yellow R7 & R8 domes get the white w/yellow R7 trunk.

So when I was looking for a third possible use, I thought pairing it with a blue dome would look neat. That was really the extent to my thinking.

Good news then...  These actually are only quasi-Hasbro items, according to an anonymous source on the matter. :)

A friend contacted us prior to C6 filling us in on just how the Disney Droid Factory came to be...  Apparantly Disney had been fiddling with the idea since the Build-A-Droid line hit shelves in 2008...  They liked the concept, and wanted something similar for their stores for a "personalized souvenier" kind of thing.

Flash forward to now...  Disney used Hasbro's molds/factory, under contract, but these are sort of actually not Hasbro items as much as they're Disney items...  if that makes sense.  It's like Hasbro working with the GI Joe Fan Club, and under contract making figures they pay for.

From a certain point of view then, these Disney Figures are 100% separate from the main Hasbro line, just as the Starspeeder 1000 is.

Of course one could also argue they used Hasbro molds, so they're Hasbro figures, but yeah, let that debate roar.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Pete_Fett on September 20, 2012, 07:30 PM
Yeah - I don't think that's ever been in question Jesse - Disney licensed the molds for the parts that Hasbro already had tooled - things like the Torso, left/right/middle legs, R2/R3/R4/R5/R7 domes...

But then Disney added the R6/R8/R9 domes and their "novelty hats" to the mix.

This is also the reason why DDP says that if Hasbro were to ever release a R6/R8/R9 droid, it would be a new sculpt, now whether that is because they want a version of the dome that doesn't have the socket for the novelty hat OR if Disney paid for the tooling and doesn't want to license it back to Hasbro, remains to be seen.

To be they are definitely in the same category as the Starspeeder Ship/Playset - and since they are all scaled to the regular Hasbro line - that's good enough for me.

I kind of look at it from the same point of view as if some other company started making playsets/environments for the 3.75" line - while they aren't Hasbro products - because they are designed to work/integrate with my 3.75" Hasbro Star Wars figures, they would definitely be something I would want to buy...
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Jesse James on September 20, 2012, 08:26 PM
I say similar to the Starspeeder because it was, by all accounts i've been told, tooled and built completely separate of Hasbro, unlike the Droids.  I'd not read anywhere that Disney had worked a contract similar to what the Joe Fan Club does though...  ???  It was obvious they're Hasbro molds because they're still stamped as such of course, but the whole methods of contracting Hasbro to do your bidding seems interesting to me.

In theory, with the right money and LFL approval,  you could probably get your own figures made. :)

I hadn't heard if Hasbro or Disney had tooled the domes.  I missed that.  Kind of neat that they may wind up as exclusive Disney items...  I'd be kind of happy with that.  Makes them unique.

He also has bodies that I have designed for use with the dome that is coming with that Class 1 Yoda Jedi Scout Fighter and an extra White w/Yellow R2 unit for use in my new Naboo Starfighter.

So I guess, this means Wave 1 of Disney BAD is done, bring on Wave 2...  >:D

What's the total number of droids and the total price?

Well - I have 100 droids in my Wave 1 set - one set of 50 to keep carded and one set of 50 to have open. In each set of 50 there is 2x of each of the different dome.

I also scored some "spare" droids - one for the Naboo Fighter - a White w/Yellow R2 and a pair of droids to give a body to the dome that's coming with the Yoda Jedi Scout Fighter Mini-rig that's coming next year - so that's another three droids, plus I think I have one more coming for use in the TRU Vintage Y-Wing - probably an R5 - it's sad, it's been so long since I thought about these parts and being so busy at work, I'm not even sure what's coming anymore....

When the box comes, I'll snap a few more pictures and post them here.

As far as cost - just the cost of the droids it's been roughly $1225.

That doesn't include the cost of the trip I made in May, the $$$ for shipping that I've given my friend who helped me get the rest AND the extra $$$ I gave my friend for his trouble/effort - which was a bargain compared to having to make several more trips to the park like he did

I've kept all mine that my buddy Jim made me, and want some more.  There are some nice color combos.  Really sort of stand-outs,a nd then good filler too like the green R5 droid.  Hard to believe there is no Green R5 in the movies and even EU that I can think of.

Just for clarification, is this set up at Star Traders inside the park, or at Once Upon A Toy (or another store) outside the park at Downtown Disney?  I'm seeing conflicting reports around the web on that.  If it's only the former at this point, I'll just wait it out 'til they go WDW's strategy where they subsequently get released outside the park too.  I'm not paying a $100 cover charge to get these things...

Paul, do you know yet?

Yes.

California - Build a Droid at Disneyland is inside the park at Star Traders only.

Florida - Build a Droid at WDW is outside the park at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney.
It is also inside Disney Hollywood Studios park in Tatooine Traders.

Get it? Got it? Good.

It's only reason I have any is the kindness of local friends.  Some of the new domes & colors really look good on shelves with rebels or aliens.  Great filler droids.

Hello, my name is Peter, and I am a Disney Build-A-Droid Factory-a-holic...

(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Even%20More%20Built%20Droids/ebb2fc22-e74f-4dec-9b27-ede31b641c16.jpg)

Just spent the week at Disney - did I really need these droids? Nope, but I couldn't NOT make a stop at the Droid Factory  ;D

A couple of these droids, were just making droids that were alternate designs I considered for my original set of 50 droids but didn't do so that I could get x-number of each part.

Tops on my to-do list were the Blue-dome R9 on the white w/blue body and the Red R3 dome on an all-red body.

The Black/Red R6 and R9 are for my desk at work and the other droids were built just to add one more droid with those parts to the collection - with the exception of domes (of which now my collection has 57; 3x of the seven domes in the pic above and 2x of the remaining 18 domes) - I now have, at a minimum, 4x of every other part in the set.

I was also able to score the Search for the Rebel Spy and Star Tours Sector 2 Security box sets while I was there as well - glad to finally add them to the collection.

I kinda lucked out - the first night we were there, we went over to Downtown Disney and I stopped into the Once Upon a Toy store - grabbed the box sets and droids.

Parts-wise, they were pretty limited, I did not see any of these parts:
Silver w/Blue R2 Dome
Silver w/Red R2 Dome
Purple R3 Dome
White w/Blue R4 Dome
Silver w/Blue R7 Dome
Blue w/Silver R8 Dome
Blue/White R7/R8 Trunk

One of the employees had to help me by going into the back and getting me a 2nd Black R6 dome (I built 2x of each droid), 2x of the White w/Purple R2 Trunks (there were NONE in the display) and the White w/Blue highlights legs I needed.

Plenty of middle legs of all colors, plenty of the hats of all styles. Green droids don't seem to be very popular, while there were plenty of Black, Blue, Red and Green legs, the most prevalent were the Green ones.

If you're heading down, I would strongly recommend trying the Downtown Disney location first since the build station has four sides and the employees are actually grateful to see someone building droids who wants to BUY them. The woman who helped me lamented the fact that over at the Lego store there are these stations where kids can build stuff - for free - and when kids come into the Once Upon a Toy Store - they often think the build-a droid and build-a-lightsaber stations work the same way. In fact even while I was building, several parents asked me "do we have to pay for this?" - meanwhile the station is plastered with the pricing signs so the first two times I was asked I politely responded "yes" and referred them to the pricing information, the third and fourth time, I simply responded "duh?!?" and the last time I said "no - I think you could walk out of here with all the parts you can carry - for free!" - the adult looked at me and knew I was giving him a smart-assed response.

When I went through Star Tours, I noticed that they have the Build Station at Tatooine Traders locked down like prison. They have the rope line and then when you go into the build station, they block it off from anyone else from standing there next to you and the whole time, there is a cast member "helping" (more like hurrying) the kid along with building his/her droids. Glad they weren't doing it like that when I was there back in May 2012.

So definitely go to Downtown Disney FIRST and then if they couldn't help you with a specific part and you're already heading to Hollywood Studios, try the Tatooine Traders location as a rushed "last resort".

Pete, thanks a lot, very helpful info. I am headed down there again in a few weeks and Hollywood Studios is finally on our To-Do list. I have been looking forward to some BAD fun. Good to know Downtown Disney is a better bet than inside the park.

Were the boxed Star Tours sets marked down? I think I heard that somewhere...

Were the boxed Star Tours sets marked down? I think I heard that somewhere...

Yes! Sorry I forgot to mention that. They were priced $24.99 each and $39.99 for two. So the discount comes when you purchase two of them.

It was on ALL of the Star Tours multi-packs, not just the 2013 sets.

The Star Tours Sector 2 Security set was plentiful EVERYWHERE. The only place I saw the Search for the Rebel Spy set was at the Downtown Disney store (where I bought the only two they had) and at Tatooine Traders - they had one front-facing, but it's entirely possible their stock on that set was limited as well...

One other tip for the Downtown Disney build-a-droid station - the parts feed from the top and you can lift the top panel of the build station on each side to see if any of the parts you need are in the part "feeder" bin for each of the part types you're looking for.

I had some fun with this today! Built a nice set of four droids at Tatooine Traders. It was locked down just as Pete described, but luckily my wait was only about 5-10 minutes. I built those suckers in no time though! The "attendant" actually came in pretty handy as I had to keep bugging her for spare parts I couldn't find in the bins on my side. There was only one part I could tell for sure they were out of  - a random green left leg. Weird.

My daughters enjoyed building their own light sabers too...Windu purple with Dooku hilts. I found it odd they had Maris Brood's saber hilt as a selection though. Just struck me as oddly random.

They are for me as well. Even though I have 57 unique droids in my collection (x2) plus the body I designed to work with the dome from Yoda's JSF mini-rig, I definitely would probably continue to get AT LEAST one 2-pack every time I visit WDW.

I can't imagine going down there and not coming home with any droids. The only thing I might do differently before my next trip is waste an afternoon, pulling all my current droids apart and seeing if there are any other color combinations I might want to build.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

I'm kind of in the same boat...  My buddy from here on the site (and here locally) goes all the time, and so he's my droid drug mule of sorts.  I think a 2-pack any time he's there is so cheap, why not just build another?

One of my new favs in my collection is a white R4 dome, blue body, white legs...  The contrasting colors are awesome.

Also I have an all solid blue R2 now, and man, it's a great way to get the R2-D2 dome without having any white there.  Very distinctly different from R2-D2...  I'm wondering though, a white bodied R2 with solid blue legs may look pretty awesome too.

The color contrasts really can make for some great background droids though.  Droid Factory at WDW is really the 2nd coolest thing they've done...  The Starspeeder 1000 is still first in my world and I'd buy a repaint (Yellow, please!) of that beast in a heartbeat.

Finally made my own visit to Disneyland and got to pick up 6 more of these, no pun intended, bad boys. My end game is to have every piece at some point. Closing in as I'm only lacking the yellow legs, both yellow bodies and one R7 body and then a bunch of the domes.

I think I have every piece at this point...  I'm not real anal about it, but it's kind of neat to know.  It wasn't that expensive IMO, for what you get...  Figure a basic figure is $10, and if you have a friend going often it works out ok...  Shipping would hurt but my local buddy was my drug mule on these, and he brought me back a ton of droids ultimately.

The two packs were less than $10-per, so for all that droid fodder, I was pretty happy.  I even have some duplicate parts because I wanted something like a solid blue R2 or something like that.

I don't know. There is always a crowd around the table as well as the build your own lightsaber table. Its always well stocked with parts in fact I think there are a few new heads in the pile but I'm probably wrong. I don't know how many actually get sold but people sure like building the little guys and making a mess.

That's what I hear from WDW too.  And they spent the $ on the display and stuff, so it's possible.  From the sounds of it though the BADs are at the very least done as they currently stand...  they may just replenish parts routinely?

As far as I'm aware they've not made any of the new heads though.  Nobody's reported it anywhere anyway.  I was hoping they'd get some new deco parts in, and was highly disappointed when the word trickled out that they were done with it.  I would think phasing it out completely would be a bad idea though, as well.

The 3 for $20 deal is a steal...  Build 2 more for the sake of the discount.  I'm guessing too many were just doing one and they're trying to move volumes of parts?

Maybe they are indeed going to phase this out?  I hope not (not that it should matter to me, as I don't go to either park really).  I dig them and think it's a neat, unique experience for people who do go.

I really wish I had a 2nd Starspeeder "playset" (of which the one I do have, is among my fav pieces!).

The table is always full of people building them but how many people actually buy one is probably pretty low. I do see a lot of kids running around with the build your own lightsabers instead. They are usually hitting people as they have sword fights in the walkways.

I would think so. The space at Tatooine Traders is pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the store, so they'd seriously have to renovate to get rid of it.

Your best/better bet is to head to Once Upon a Toy at Downtown Disney, they have a four-person build station that's pretty much right in the middle of all the Star Wars merchandise. Also, they have attendants who are more than willing to go into the stockroom and locate any parts that might not be out on the floor for you. That was my experience last year, I will be back there in June for the final Star Wars weekend, I'll update this thread if my experience is any different.

Okay, thanks.  I think I need to start saving my pennies... I'm hoping to put together one droid of each distinct color scheme / pattern - if that's even an easy thing to sort through and figure out.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by pattern, if by making sure you want to have at least one of each unique dome, then you'll need 25 total.

On this same thread, almost 2 years ago, I posted pics of the droids I had at that time -the pics in that post should give you an idea of the different colors available - http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=22364.msg547182#msg547182

And then in January of 2014, I went to Disney for a week and bought 7 more designs - http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=22364.msg568228#msg568228

Here would be my recommendations if you're looking to do at least one of each droid type & color: (everything listed below is in the pictures of both posts except for the all-black & silver R6, and the R3 with Purple Highlights on the dome)

R2s:
Silver Dome w/Blue Highlights, White w/Blue Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Silver Dome w/Yellow Highlights, White w/Yellow Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Silver Dome w/Red Highlights, White w/Red Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Silver Dome w/Green Highlights, White w/Green Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Red Dome w/Silver Highlights, Blue R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Blue Middle Leg

R3s:
Clear Dome w/Purple Highlights, White w/Black Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Clear Dome w/Red Highlights, Red R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Red Middle Leg

R4s:
Green Dome w/White Highlights, Green R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Green Middle Leg
White Dome w/Blue Highlights, White w/Blue Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
White Dome w/Purple Highlights, White w/Purple Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg

R5s:
White Dome w/Green Highlights, White w/Green Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
White Dome w/Red Highlights, White w/Red Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Black Dome w/Silver Highlights, Black R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Black Middle Leg

R6s:
White Dome w/Purple Highlights, White w/Purple Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
White Dome w/Yellow Highlights, White w/Yellow Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Black Dome w/Silver Highlights, Black R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Black Middle Leg

R7s:
Black Dome w/Silver Highlights, White w/Black Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Silver Dome w/Blue Highlights, White w/Blue Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Yellow Dome w/Silver Highlights, White w/Yellow Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg

R8s:
White Dome w/Black Highlights, White w/Black Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Blue Dome w/Silver Highlights, White w/Blue Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
White Dome w/Yellow Highlights, White w/Yellow Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg

R9s:
Blue Dome w/Silver Highlights, Blue R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Blue Middle Leg
Red Dome w/Silver Highlights, Red R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Red Middle Leg
Green Dome w/Silver Highlights, Green R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Green Middle Leg

If you get those 25, that will net you a complete set of domes with at least ONE of each part.

The sole reason why I recommended putting the R3 w/Purple Highlights dome on a white w/Black Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 body was so that you would have at least ONE of that body/trunk part in your set that is white w/black highlights.

If you want to see what those two would look like OR if you want me to cobble together any color combinations I haven't photographed, just so you could see how it would look, let me know, I would be happy to do so.

Lastly, as I mentioned in my post from back in January 2014, these parts where MIA at the Once Upon a Toy store:
Silver w/Blue R2 Dome
Silver w/Red R2 Dome
Purple R3 Dome
White w/Blue R4 Dome
Silver w/Blue R7 Dome
Blue w/Silver R8 Dome
Blue/White R7/R8 Trunk

Since I will be going during the final Star Wars weekend this year, my expectations for a wide array of parts is minimal, but like I said in my earlier post, I will take a quick inventory of parts while I'm there and post what I found.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Yeah, I hadn't gotten into it yet to figure it out, but I'd assumed I'd go with one of each torso - but one of each dome makes more sense.

This thing is a great idea for kids, but a total cluster **** for collectors.

Thanks for all that info, I'll dig through it in a little bit.  But at a glance, if it's $21.95 for two figures, and I'd need to do that at least 12.5 times to get one with each dome, I'm looking at about $300 with tax... I'm going to have a really hard time justifying that.  I briefly saw Scott post in the thread you linked to that he's going with only new domes... how many of those are there?

Since Hasbro has made Build-a-Droids for R2s, R3s, R4s, R5s and R7s - the only "new" domes in the set are really the R6s, R8s and R9s - there are three each of those.

Color-wise, the problem is whether or not you care about the shade of color or mix of colors used. For example, the White w/Red Highlights R5 dome is pretty close to R5-D4, which they released using Build-a-Droid parts in the Vintage line. But the problem is that there's no "trunk"/"body" in the parts set that is comparable to R5-D4 since he has both red AND blue highlights - the White Body w/Red Highlights in the Disney parts set is unique in that way.

If you don't care about the shade of the color, you could probably skip making a droid similar to R2-D2 and also one similar to the White w/Green highlights R2 that came with the Queen Starship pack - those were both made using BAD parts, the only difference between them and what you'd get at Disney is the shade of the Blue and Green and the fact that the domes at Disney have holes at the top for the "hats". Continuing on the shade of color differences, the all-red Disney body parts are a lighter shade of red than the all red R2's body parts that came in that same Queen Starship pack, so again, all depends on whether or not you consider color shade a measure of "new"/"unique"-ness.

If you wanted to get new, unique droids, and keep the overall expense "down", I recommend building the following:

R6s:
White Dome w/Purple Highlights, White w/Purple Highlights R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
Black Dome w/Silver Highlights, Black R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Black Middle Leg

R8s:
Blue Dome w/Silver Highlights, White w/Blue Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg
White Dome w/Yellow Highlights, White w/Yellow Highlights R7/8 Body & Legs, White Middle Leg

R9s:
Red Dome w/Silver Highlights, Red R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Red Middle Leg
Green Dome w/Silver Highlights, Green R2/3/4/5/6/9 Body & Legs, Green Middle Leg

There are a total of six colors: Blue, Yellow, Red, Green, Purple, Black - you'd get at least one droid with each of those colors either the base color or the highlight color and you'd get 2 each of the three new domes - since you have an even number you could get 2-packs and the total cost would be $65.85 + tax.

Don't forget, if there are any color combinations you'd like to see, just let me know and I'd be happy to put those combinations together and snap some pics. I have my "open" set of 57 droids on a shelf that I can easily access, so it's no trouble to do so.

Pete, are you going to Disneyworld or Disneyland?  We are flying into DW on 6/4...

We're going to Disneyworld - flying in on the 11th.

I've never seen anything new as far as parts are concerned.

Correct, the 25 domes, 10 R2 Trunks, 3 R7 Trunks, 10 Different Left Legs, 10 Different Right Legs and 5 Different Middle Legs are all the droid parts they've ever had (they also have the various "hats" but I'm not counting them). I think a couple of times the Disney merchandising folks have been asked if there are any plans to introduce new parts or the same parts we have now in new colors, the answer has been that they have no plans to do so.

The interesting thing is that the spot where the figure goes in the clamshell is big enough to accommodate a protocol droid, so I don't know if that's intentional or by accident - my thinking was that at some point they had planned on branching out to protocol droids as well, but have since decided against it.

My thinking was that since they had six different colors they could have at some point added purple and yellow base color parts, that way every color was used as the highlight color on white AND as the base color for each body part. The R3 with purple highlights on an all purple body would look pretty neat, same goes with the any of the domes with yellow highlights. I was also surprised, they never added a color like "pink" for girls to get into the action. I also wouldn't have minded an R2 dome with black highlights to put on an all-black & silver body, I think that would have looked pretty cool - it actually would have been neat if they had made it so you could make all-black imperial versions of each droid type available - as it stands now you can only do it with the R5 and R6 models.

The new All-Blue R2 droid that's part of the 60th Anniversary of Disneyland is technically "new" since from the pics I've seen there have been no parts in the BAD set so far that even come close to matching the color scheme they've given R2-D60.

Lastly, there's one more BAD, that even I don't have in my collection and it's the one that came in this set:

He's made using all of the same BAD part molds, but all of his parts have unique coloring. They had mountains of these when I was there back in January 2014, I'm not sure if they still do or not, I kinda wish they had made an option for getting the droid by itself, cause the colors on the fighter are hideous and I could care less about the Jedi Mickey. If I get to WDW and picking up R2-D60 is not possible (which I'm expecting will be the case either because he's not going to be available in WDW OR because he'll have been scarfed up in the previous Star Wars weekends) I'll probably grab one of these and have it shipped home.

Have you found any difference between the selection at downtown Disney vs. the Jawa Trader or Darth's Mall?  Just wondering if I should plan for my shopping at one vs. the other.

Have you found any difference between the selection at downtown Disney vs. the Jawa Trader or Darth's Mall?  Just wondering if I should plan for my shopping at one vs. the other.

My advice would be to start at Downtown Disney first. There are four building stations and traffic by the display is solely dependent on foot traffic through the store. If you are staying at a Disney resort/hotel with bus service - my advice would be to hop a bus from where you're staying headed to Downtown Disney later at night before the store closes and you'll probably have the display to yourself. I was there at different times of the day and each time there was an employee within earshot willing to help me out by looking in the backroom for any parts that were missing - even when I was there right before closing.

The problem with the Jawa Trader location is that as folks get off the ride, there is an influx of people every few minutes into the store and as such a new group of folks waiting in line to build droids, so I know at times they have limited how much you can build before having to go back to the end of the line, but that depends on foot traffic through the ride/park. Since you'll be going during a Star Wars weekend, I would expect it to be high.

I have never been to a Star Wars Weekend myself, so I'm not sure what presence they have had regarding droid parts in the Darth Mall - my hope is that the R2-D60 will be there in plentiful supply, but I don't know if they'll have the parts there for building individual droids.

So this would be my recommended order of checking:
1) Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney
2) The Jawa Trader
3) Darth Mall

New parts coming to Disney BAD...

Ah, crap!  I haven't finished up the old ones yet.  I sure hope they don't swap all the old ones out for the new, or I'm in deep Bantha doo-doo...

With 3 new carded droids coming now too, I'm getting mildly nervous that this (exclusive) line's going to continue on for quite some time.  Not that I don't love me some astromechs (who doesn't?), but oy!!  Not to mention these things aren't available outside of Disneyland, like they are at WDW.  Sure wish they still had the "shopping pass" out here.  That thing was a godsend during all the Star Tours figures!
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Pete_Fett on April 17, 2015, 08:24 AM
Well, okay then... Interesting...

So there are 3 carded droids - Holographic R2 (hopefully it will still be available at the final SW weekend whe I'm there), R2-D60 at DisneyLand and R2-D23 at their media event in the fall.

Then, based on the picture, there are:
5? New R2/3/4/5/6/9 Bodies:

2 New R7/8 Bodies:

11? New Domes:
Silver with Blue R2 (not sure if this is new in some way)
White with Yellow R2
Gold with Black R2
Purple? with Yellow R2
Totally Clear R3 (no highlight colors? hard to tell)
White with Blue R4 (not sure if this is new either)
Red with Black R5
White with Red and Black R6
Gold and White R7
White and Blue R8
Silver with Black R9

6? New Leg Pairs:
White with Blue (again, not sure if these are new)
White with Yellow (hard to tell if these are new)
Black with Gold
Red with Black
Gray (can't tell if there is a 2nd color on those legs)
Black with White

And one new center leg color - gray

I would be inclined to think that the white with blue "R2-D2" parts are a carry forward from Wave 1 simply because they want to keep the ability to build an R2-D2 in the mix, but that is just a theory on my part, I will really have to scrutinize the pic against the pieces I have to be sure.

I am confused about the R4 dome, looks like another carry-forward piece, but again, I'll have to look over it closely.

I am shocked by the specificity of some of the colors. There really doesn't seem to be the flexibility of mixing and matching that the Wave 1 parts offered. I have to wonder if there are more parts coming and this pic is just a sample. From Wave 1, I have 2 droid designs for each dome, it will be a challenge to come up with multiple designs for some of these domes, especially if the Wave 1 parts are getting phased out, which I think they have to be, otherwise it's going to be chaos with multiple designs of red, black, white/yellow and white/black legs in the bins.

Was there any information on when these would be hitting the parks? It would be awesome if it was for the Star Wars Weekends coming up, although, with me getting to the park in the final weekend, even if they do release them for this summer, I bet many pieces will be sold out by the time I get there.  :'(

It would be fantastic if they threw a curve ball at us and released these parts all in a box set, that is definitely wishful thinking on my part...

According to the panel, this week.  Some sites were even saying the panel said "today" (meaning yesterday of course).

Haven't seen any reports of people buying them yet though...

edit:
Of course, as soon as I type that - there are pics of people with the new droids (http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=15435)

Looking at the pic again today (last night was info overload), are a lot of these new BADs existing characters?

The one in the center looks an awful lot like the cancelled R8-B7 (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Conventions/Celebration_VI/Hasbro/Collector_Presentation&image=DSC_0319.jpg&img=&tt=)?

Another looks a little bit like R5-K6 (http://www.rebelscum.com/TLCBPScrambleonYavin.asp) from Scramble on Yavin set.

Another one looks like R3-S6 (http://www.rebelscum.com/TCW23r3s6.asp) aka Goldie from the Clone Wars.

Hmmm...

Well - the R6 dome does look A LOT like one of the domes they showed during the Abrams/Kennedy panel when they brought out the droid builders - so if that's the case, that makes them all the more cooler!

Where did you see this info posted Nick?

Looks like there could be more parts than what was shown in the picture - there is a new white torso with white and black highlights, different than anything that has come before. Looks like it would look good with that new R6 dome, moreso than the new red torso that is pictured. It might even look good with the Silver/Black R9 dome too...

I wonder if they have a "wave 2" poster planned like they released from wave 1 a couple years ago....

It kind of makes me want them all now that they've retooled the trunks to remove the lower holes. Not sure about the legs as I liked the wires, but I get the logic. They are some smart/sadistic mfers though for including actual characters.

Seconded.

I always wanted more of the Disney Droids (I only have two of the 25 domes :(), but somehow these feel more like of a WANT/NEED and not "nice to have" like the last series because at least some of them are actual character droids from the movies.  :-\
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory
Post by: Pete_Fett on April 20, 2015, 10:40 AM
There is a part of me that really likes the fact that some of these droids are actual characters. This way, I can limit what I buy to just that character's parts, get one to keep in a clamshell, get a 2nd to open and I'll be done. With how limited the color combinations are anyway, I'll be hard pressed to find use for Goldie's dome or the dome that is blue/purple with yellow highlights that goes on the gray w/yellow body.

I am slightly tempted to bring some of the 2012/Wave 1 domes with me and see if any of those domes look good on 2015 bodies and vice versa. For example, the white w/yellow R6 dome might look good on the new white w/yellow & gray body, so it will be an interesting challenge for me to see what kind of aesthetically pleasing color combinations I can come up with.

The GH report indicates that the gold parts sell out quick so I guess making a Goldie will probably be the biggest challenge.  :-\ Makes sense if you think about it since it is an actual character.

The only thing I can do now is keep my fingers crossed that there are still new parts to be had come mid-June...

There is also the part group to make I believe Mace's astro from TCW.  The one from the ultimate battlepack, no?

And red leaders r5 of course.  I'm happy with the scramble version but I will make one with different (white/black) legs for variety.

I MUST have a Goldie.  It was based on the Steelers and in particular Jerome Bettis.  Gotta own that. :)

The timing on this will be interesting for me to watch.  We head down in 6 weeks, so will DW have the new parts or the old parts?  I still don't have a set of the old ones, so would like those to hang around, but it would equally stink to miss out on the new parts while I'm there.  Just have to wait and see I guess.

Nice! Thanks for sharing Paul!

Great to see that all nine domes were there for you as well as all the parts.

Would it be too much trouble to ask for you to put together the following combinations and take pictures of them:

White w/Yellow R2 Dome on new Gray body
Blue w/Yellow R2 Dome on the White w/Yellow & Gray R2 Body/Legs
White w/Red & Black R6 Dome on the Red w/Black R2 Body, black middle leg and white/black left/right legs
White w/Gold R7 Dome on the white w/black R7 Body you currently have the new R6 dome on
White w/Blue R8 Dome with the same body you have it on now but with the White w/Blue legs and White middle leg
Silver w/Black R9 Dome on Goldie's body

Thanks!

(Edited post to make it clear that I was't asking Paul to pick up droids for me, just that I wanted to see how those combinations looked)

When to Disneyland last night and picked up the droids for those that emailed me.

The Star Trader only had the new sets of parts. The droid bodies are still the BAD sculpts but they removed the lower hole on the side. Also there is now only one leg instead of a left and right version. They removed the wires around the lower leg. This should make it easier for lay people to build a droid without two left legs. Also the hats are brand new. They include a Oswald the Lucky Rabbit hat, sumbraro, imperial officer hat and a regular Mickey hat. I think that was all of them. The old two pack clam shells are gone. They only have the one droid version.

Was at Disneyland yesterday talking to a cast member who works in the Star Trader so take the following with a grain of salt.

She said the current wave 2 droids are currently Disneyland exclusives but will be available at Star Wars weekends next month. However, wave 3 droids will be replacing them this summer. Not sure if WDW will have both wave 2 & 3 at the same time. The diamond R2 will be a Disneyland exclusive and not available elsewhere. She said there should be plenty at the Star Trader and won't be a special event deal. They are expecting them soon.

Me either.

So basically this Wave 2 set is just a temporary selection until Wave 3 droids come out? After sitting on Wave 1 for three years, Wave 2 is going to be here and gone in a matter of months?!?

If that's the case, I may have to reconsider even trying to be a completist on these things.

Hopefully she was/is mistaken...  :-\

It's official.  This Disney build a droid line is going to be the thing that after 20 years of collecting, turns my collection into something that's not complete.  I could barely fathom the idea of getting out there and spending hundreds of dollars trying to assemble them all, now they are going to have a ton more, some of which will have brief availability before yet another series of them comes out - presumably this will continue for years to come.

I'm going to stop concerning myself with these things.

If it makes you feel better Rob, Wave 2 is technically NOT a Hasbro product.  Sure, Disney took inspiration from the old Hasbro parts, but these new Wave 2 toolings (bodies, legs, hats) are all Disney at this point - there is now Hasbro copyright on them.

I gave up on these long ago.  I'd buy a "one of each part" set if they ever made it, but I'm not going to let not having them bug me too much.

Hoping to do similar with wave 2, though I'm kinda hoping this rumor about a 3rd wave is false, or at least the details are, haha.  It'd be tough to track down those.  My friends who went to CA did pick up 3 of the Wave 2 droids for me though and they're the ones I wanted the most at least.

I'm hoping to get the rest though, or most of the rest at least...  A few of those are kind of redundant decos.

I suppose a little bit... i'm going back to florida for Christmas and might head over to the Lego thing in Orlando with the nieces and nephews.  If I do, I'll probably swing by and see what's what and maybe pick up some of these - depends how rich I'm feeling when I get there.  But I'm done worrying about whether I eventually get them or not.  Too much hassle, too expensive.

That's appreciated Phruby, as I know I want that Disneyland droid that may be a bear to get any other way.  R2-D60.  I'm addicted to their droids though.  Just got R2-MK (Mr. Mackey's droid, clearly) from China the other day, and am pleased to have that snazzy deco mixed in on my shelf.

And Ahsoka's droid too.

I was working on one...  It's a fair bit it you squeeze wave 2 and 3 into one wave.  Basically as much new as wave 1 had.  That powder blue R7 or whatever it is has no matching body.  Weird.

Some I'd put in the "just enough difference to make you mad" column from some parts in wave 1 also.

I love the orange parts and the white r2 w/red details dome.

A "plain" (more or less) R3 is highly appreciated too.

I believe this is the list - like Jesse said, when you combine "Wave 2" and "Wave 3" you get pretty much the same number of parts as Wave 1 from three years ago...

Domes
1. White R2 with yellow trim (wave 2)
2. White R2 with red trim
3. Silver R2 with blue trim (wave 2)
4. Silver R2 with purple trim
5. Grey R2 with black & white trim
6. Grey R2 with lime trim
7. Gold R2 with black trim (wave 2)
8. Blue R2 with yellow trim (wave 2)
9. Black R2
10. R3 with silver trim (wave 2)
11. R3 with orange & silver trim
12. White R4 with blue trim (wave 2)
13. White R4 with red trim
14. Black R4 with silver trim
15. White R5 with red trim
16. Black R5 with silver trim
17. Red R5 with black & white trim (wave 2)
18. White R6 with black & red trim (wave 2)
19. Silver R6 with purple trim
20. White R7 with gold trim (wave 2)
21. White R7 with blue trim
22. White R8 with cyan trim (wave 2)
23. Orange R8 with white trim
24. Silver R9 with black trim (wave 2)
25. White R9 with purple trim

Trunks
1. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with blue trim (wave 2)
2. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with yellow & silver trim (wave 2)
3. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with red trim
4. Black R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with gold trim (wave 2)
5. Black R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with red/copper trim
6. Red R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with black & white trim (wave 2)
7. Grey R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with yellow trim (wave 2)
8. Grey R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with black & white trim
9. Purple R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with silver trim
10. Maroon R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 trunk with lime trim
11. White R7/R8 trunk with black trim (wave 2)
12. White R7/R8 trunk with blue trim
13. Orange R7/R8 trunk with white trim
14. Blue R7/R8 trunk with white trim (wave 2)

Legs
1. White leg with blue trim (wave 2)
2. White leg with red trim
3. White leg with black trim (wave 2)
4. White leg with yellow & silver trim (wave 2)
5. Black leg with gold trim (wave 2)
6. Black leg with silver trim
7. Red leg with black & white trim (wave 2)
8. Grey leg with blue & yellow trim (wave 2)
9. Grey leg with black & white trim
10. Maroon leg with grey trim
11. Orange leg with white trim
12. Purple leg with silver trim

Middle Legs
1. White leg (wave 2)
2. Black leg (wave 2)
3. Red leg (wave 2)
4. Grey leg (wave 2)
5. Maroon leg
6. Purple leg
7. Orange leg

Hats
1. Sombrero
2. Mouse ears
3. Rabbit ears
4. Imperial cap
5. SW cap
6. Sorcerer's hat
7. Top hat

In Wave 1 there were 25 Domes (5 R2, 2 R3, 3 R4, 3 R5, 3 R6, 3 R7, 3 R8 and 3 R9), so the total number of domes is the same, but the break-down of droid type is different. Essentially there is one less R6, R7, R8 and R9 then there was last time and there are four more R2 domes then last time.

For the other parts...

Trunks
1. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Blue
2. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Red
3. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Green
4. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Yellow
5. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Purple
6. White R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9 with Black
7. Black R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9
8. Red R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9
9. Green R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9
10. Blue R2/R3/R4/R5/R6/R9
11. White R7/R8 with Black
12. White R7/R8 with Blue
13. White R7/R8 with Yellow

So there is 1 more trunk in Waves 2/3.

There were ten different leg color designs that matched trunk designs 1-10 listed above, but since there were different "left" and "right"legs there were 20 different leg pieces to collect. In Waves 2/3, there are two additional color designs, but the good thing is that you get two of each of leg part every time you get a droid with matching left and right legs, so that's a "plus". (especially in my case where I'm trying to make sure that I have at least two of every part in a "set")

For middle legs, in Wave 1 there were five - White, Black, Red, Blue & Green; and for hats there were eight total: Red, Black, Blue & Green Mouse Ears, Indy Fedora, Jack Sparrow Pirate Hat, Goofy Hat & Yoda Baseball Cap.

So here are the totals:

Wave 1:
25 Domes
13 Trunks
20 Left & Right Legs
5 Middle Legs
8 Hats
Total: 71 Parts
Waves 2/3:
25 Domes
14 Trunks
12 Left & Right Legs
7 Middle Legs
7 Hats
Total: 65 Parts

I hope this helps. I'm still almost a month away from being at WDW. I get in on a Thursday and will be hitting Downtown Disney that day. My hope is that the parts will be there too and I will be able to get a good chunk of what I need. My parents will be in tow, so I've read that they are limiting you to 25 droids (I guess their thinking is that you are gonna want one of each dome) - so if (and that's a big if) they have all 65 parts available, I'll be able to make a set of 2x of each of 25 different droid designs. I am still on the fence on whether or not I want to get two different designs with each dome like I did with Wave 1 (my Wave 1 collection has 56 different droid designs, and I have 2 of each of those designs).

I also have pairings that aren't 100% ideal - such as the White w/Purple R4 Dome on an all Black body. I'd love to identify a dome in the new Wave 2/3 set that would look good on a Wave 1 Black w/Silver body (for example that Silver w/Black R9 Dome) and then buy that dome on the all Purple body of Wave 3 and do a swap. Don't know how feasible that would be though on this trip...

Wow! I don't even have all of the first wave yet. Don't know if I'll ever be able to pick all these up.  :'(

Even though I acquired all of the first wave, I'm wondering that myself about this 2nd wave - seeing that there is almost the same number of parts this time as there were last time, it's kind of mind numbing to think that in 2018 they might do this all again...

It would be nice if they (Disney) could communicate their plan here, is it going to be just like the 1st wave which lasted from May 2012 until March/April 2015? So this wave would roughly last until March/April 2018? Or are they planning on a much more rapid turn-around on the parts?

I'm going to WDW in June and I might be going again in March 2016 - it would be great to know that I could count on the Wave 2 parts still being there then instead of there being an entirely new wave of parts come next year when Star Wars Weekends start up again.

Disneyland's Star Trader had the new wave of droids. Please note the black R2 and R4 do NOT have black legs. There are no black legs in this series according to cast members. The closest you will get are the black feet with white legs or black legs with gold accents. They do say the black/red legs may show up in a future wave but unknown when.

I hit Star Wars Weekends at Disney World last week.  From what I was able to piece together, they moved all the Wave 1 stock out of the parks for SW Weekends.  However, the exterior stores like Downtown Disney still have wave 1.  I was told at the Downtown store that they have the Wave 2 stuff in stock, but were holding back until after SWW was over.  I'm not sure if that means they'll just naturally let the old stock run out or if they pulled W1 now.  There was a worker grabbing one of each remaining piece for "photos in the backroom?" while I was there, but they wouldn't help me put together or buy a set of individual pieces.  Also, most of the solid color (non white) domes, bodies, and side legs were already sold out.  I was hoping to get more individual pieces, but just ended up with 6 wave 1 droids and 1 from w2.

It's amazing how you can get different stories. I was told by an employee at Downtown Disney that they were waiting for stock to sell through before switching over so they weren't sure when exactly the new Wave 2 parts would be available. This was on this past Thursday (June 11th). I was glad that they did still have the Wave 1 parts though as I was able to pick up a bunch of White w/Purple Bodies that I could use with the three new purple colored domes.

Here are some (not so great) pics of the Wave 2 set of domes that I was able to acquire:

R2s (or R2-like domes, I refuse to call an R2 dome an R7)
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/4D1A20BF-139B-4C04-9D88-39FD99A5E5BB.jpg) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/peterjohn0/media/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/4D1A20BF-139B-4C04-9D88-39FD99A5E5BB.jpg.html)

More R2s and the R3s

R4s & R5s
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/8058A411-D42F-41BC-AF24-DB3BAAE5733A.jpg) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/peterjohn0/media/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/8058A411-D42F-41BC-AF24-DB3BAAE5733A.jpg.html)

R6s & R7s
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/1ED6E946-1E7C-4F50-A92F-846BA2BADCD1.jpg) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/peterjohn0/media/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/1ED6E946-1E7C-4F50-A92F-846BA2BADCD1.jpg.html)

R8s & R9s
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/098450E7-C9E7-40F8-909B-3B13816E15C9.jpg) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/peterjohn0/media/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/098450E7-C9E7-40F8-909B-3B13816E15C9.jpg.html)

You'll notice that there are some droids on the Black w/Silver body from Wave 1, I also had a spare pair of the White w/Black Body from Wave 1 and the new Silver w/Black R9 dome looks great on both of those. The new Black w/Silver & Orange R5 dome is on a Black w/Gold & Silver body which uses the new torso combined with the Black w/Silver legs from Wave 1.

I also picked up some extras of the two R7s and the White w/Cyan R8 so that I could mix and match the bodies among the Wave 2 domes as well as bring in some dome/body combinations with the R7/R8 domes from Wave 1.

After all of the body combo shuffling, here are the resulting Wave 1 w/Wave 2 body parts I now have in my collection as well:
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/peterjohn0/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/C60706E1-E923-4B64-9073-1D64CBE98618.jpg) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/peterjohn0/media/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Build-a-Droid/Disney%20Droid%20Factory%20-%20Wave%202/C60706E1-E923-4B64-9073-1D64CBE98618.jpg.html)

The White w/Yellow R6 on that Orange & White R7/R8 body is for "future expansion" - perhaps there there will be another Orange R7/R8 dome down the line I can put this body to go use with.

The flexibility of the colors this time leaves a lot to be desired. But what I do like most of all is the "set" of purple colored droids since there is now an R2, R3, R4, two R6s and an R9.

All total, I purchased 2x of 54 different droid designs, plus 4x droids with White w/Purple bodies from Wave 1. So this was a very expensive trip  ;D

I will try to take better pictures when I have more time...

Yeah I got some Wv1's from my buddy for Wv2 swapping.  I have like the R6 black/silver dome, with the red/white/black body from wv2 and white/black/silver legs.  Looks pretty damn awesome.

That's one of my favs now.  Wv1 parts mix well, so getting some extras was nice.

I need MANY more Wv2 parts yet though.  All the orange parts, a ton more...  Excited to get those next year I guess.  ::)

I get a discount because I am a Disney Vacation Club member, I believe the discount is either 10% or 15%, so I did pay less than that. But more or less, yes.

I bet there is a trash can with a lot of clam shells in it at Disney World. I hate how at Disneyland they make you put each droid in a clam shell to buy it because that is where the SKU price is. Seems like such a waste.

Wow! I am so out of the loop. Went to Disneyland on Monday with the express intent of picking up a few more of the wave 1 domes I never got and was bummed to learn that wave 1 is discontinued. Not a fan of the waves 2 and 3 stuff, though I did build some imperial droids, including "goldie."

Man, I never got all the last round.  ::)  Making it easy not to care at the moment.  >:(

I did get everything in the last round and I'm starting to not care as well. It's one thing when you release a slew of parts and then let them be your stock for 2+ years and it's an entirely different thing if you're going to trickle out new parts here and there (like the Santa Hat that just showed up in the hat bins one day and now these four new domes).

My hope is that these will be the last of the parts for a while. The black/orange R0 is a nice fit with the rest of what's been offered the purple R5 is also a good fit even if it's a bit too much like the red R5 from the TFA 4-pack. The updated White/Yellow R6 is "different enough to make you mad" but does fit nicely with the new white/yellow body released.

The new white/brown R6 dome however, that one is a real mystery to me. There really aren't any body parts that cleanly "go" with this dome. My thinking is that there are some new body parts coming at some point since we now have a second done highlight color that really doesn't correspond to any of the body parts.

Since there are also four new domes, I have to wonder if these were designs from a second (and aborted) TFA-themed 4 pack.

Many people have mentioned the exact same weathering on the yellow and brown domes. Seems like the yellow was over painted with brown. On another forum I saw someone mention that they saw Snap with the yellow droid in one scene but with the brown in a later scene.

Well, after a concerted effort searching eBay once a day, I was able to acquire the final pieces to complete the original 2012 releases. I don't have all complete droids, mind you, but I have all domes, bodies and legs. It can be done! And it wasn't horribly expensive.

Hopefully I can get to Disneyland enough to get all the new ones now.

Friends were at WDW not long ago, picked up some of the latest pieces for me, which I'm sorely lacking.

Their report back was that WDW still has some Wave 1 parts in one area, and won't replace them till they're sold out.  And the later Wave parts were selling out fast (by the day it seemed) at the other part of the park that had newer stuff.  So I don't think there's any issue besides stock not meeting demand.  Disney seems to have cornered the Build-a-droid thing somewhat, so I'd say it's going to keep steaming along.

Again, I hope there's no new parts for a year or two at least.  I know I need ALL the new purple parts, so that's like 3 or 4 droids.  I need the brown R0 and the yellow (I think) one.  I have a lot of stuff I'd still like to have.  Like I said before this last couple rounds has been a bit more of a chore for me.  Too anxiety-inducing for my tastes.  But I do love me some droids, sooooo...  ::)

I need the brown R0 and the yellow (I think) one.

I'm pretty sure the White w/Brown highlights dome was an R6 not an R0. The new R0 dome is Black w/Red highlights.

Their report back was that WDW still has some Wave 1 parts in one area, and won't replace them till they're sold out.

That's good to know - back in June 2015 when I was there, I was able to score some White w/Purple bodies for the new domes with purple color highlighting - I'd like to grab some more white w/purple bodies to put with the new White/Purple R5 dome, hopefully that will be achievable....

Getting in late is gonna hurt cuz wave 1 is mostly long gone.  Now that they're onto protocol droids it's hard to say where the latter waves will go from here too.

I'm not gonna be as particular on the protocols.  I'm told they're a bitch to make because of subtle differences in arms torsos and such.

I have all parts, and duplicates of most because I've found a billion combinations that look great.  For me, it's not about the completeness so much as it's about loving background droids I can slip into any scene, and it looks good.  All my Rebel Pilots will have an astromech, Imperial scenes will have plenty, a (possible) Starspeeder docking area will have plenty...

I'm not as wild about the protocols.  Like I can't see getting the CZ body with all the heads on it, and then the regular protocol body with all the heads, and so on...  That's sorta batshit insanity.

I will want a droid for every head though.   :-X

I've made a list of parts I want for when we go in the summer.  Man, I think there's 17 droids I want.  That's going to be expensive.

I don't really like the looks of the blue droids though.  Looks to plastic-y for my tastes.

I want/have the following build a protocol, after I have all of these I will feel content.

blue Senate protocol - check
Black protocol - check
Silver vendor droid - check
Silver Cz droid - check
Blue Ra7 droid - on the way from a board member on rebelscum
Silver protocol (the blue sensor eyes look cool) - needed
Silver 4lom - needed

I'm on the fence about a golden CZ and a red/maroon Vendor

I'm sure they will do a second wave with a few new sculpts (way too early to start the prediction brackets but I would love a police droid, Maz droid, lightsaber maker droid) alongside a greenish 3po (could also work for a cannon vendor droid from clone wars in green).

I would love love love to have one of every part - I just don't see any realistic way to do it.  I've been to Disney twice in two years and bought up a nice chunk of pieces, but they never have all of them, nor do I want to spend hundreds and hundreds buying duplicate parts like bodies to get all the heads I want.  The assembled droids look cool, but I like having the parts stashing in my droid factory or sand crawler.  They're perfect for stuff like that.  It will never happen, but I'd be all over a set that had 1x of every part.
Title: Re: Disney Exclusive Build-A-Droid Factory

I'd be all over a set that had 1x of every part.

I kept hoping they'd do up some kind of box set or playset...  maybe when they put out that Sandcrawler playset they'll do a box of parts to go with it?  That'd be awesome.

I tried to get parts that were new (R6,R8,R9 heads) and I'll try to get the new Clone Wars Vendor Droid since that head is a new part.  No easy way to collect them all for sure.  I'm pretty jealous of guys like Pete or Jesse that have taken the time to grab most everything over the past few years.

I just got back from our family vacation to WDW.  I tried to keep things a bit focused on the droid factory front, at least with the astromechs.  I would up building a Disney version of R2-Q5 (for the life of me I couldn't find the R0 dome to make R0-H2 from TFA (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R0-H2)), and a white R6 unit with yellow markings.

I found the B-A-D program was only set up in two stores at WDW.  Tatooine Traders, which is located next to Star Tours in Disney Hollywood Studios, and at the Star Wars Trading Post in Disney Springs.  As for astromech parts that seemed to be readily available?
