*Flexes his review muscles*

:)

I loved the Anakin set myself...  It gives you 3 definitive versions of the character and since I don't care about the kid version I'm ok with this for Ani...  I'd dig some EU ones maybe but for the films, this is 99% good enough for me.  Only new film one I want is an outlander disguise one.

Not too bad of a difference there especially with the wheels on the RC-D2 elevating him a bit.

Astromech platform heels I guess.

He fits in good with basic figures...  I really think a "course" for him to roll around on that looked like the Death Star or a Mos Eisley maze would be funny. :)

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Tomy RC R2-D2 "RC-D2"
« on: February 6, 2006, 08:16 PM »
A new review is up and running for your reading fun, plus a little viewing pleasure...  I was surprised how many people I talk to who passed on this figure, because this was one of the surprise hits of 2005 to me and thus I felt a full review of it was still a worthy story.

I speak of the Japanese Exclusive, Remote Controlled R2-D2 figure from 2005...  Or "RC-D2" for short.

This was one of the greatest little surprises to come down the 3.75" line in quite a while...  Not that he was really even an official part of the U.S. line but still it's a great figure no doubt.

Besides the RC feature working quite flawlessly on a smooth surface, the figure is a sharp sculpt and accurate size for the basic figure line.  If you had a big "Death Star" diorama set up as an obstacle course for R2, I could see this even translating into a really cool little game...  Of course I'm just thinking out loud here.

Anyway, the figure's a good sculpt, great paintjob...  The action feature is probably the best in a series of bad "gimmicks", so I even enjoyed that.  And I noted in my review that this is probably the last truly innovative R2-D2 we'll ever se...  What more do you do with this character afterall, ya know?

So if you don't own this, I'd track one down...  Read the full review though, see what all I'm talking about and I have to say a HUGE vote of thanks to our photo guru Jared for the kick ass little video clip too.  Check out the review for the Video of RC-D2 in action, even if ya just hate my writing and opinions.  :)  The video made it all worthwhile to me, hah.

Thanks guys for looking.

Pens had a rally over the weekend that, unfortunately in a way, got overshadowed due to the Steelers and their weekend, but the Pens rally got a lot of support and local sports teams are throwing a lot of backing to the Pens...  It's all to put political pressure on Governor Rendell to give the Slots License to Lemieux's backers...

There's a lot of bi-partisan support so that's good but it's all local.  It should be, however Rendell isn't local so he may not "care" quite as much.  I dunno.  We'll see how things go.  I maintain optomism, but it is getting close to crunch time I guess.

Well I didn't say it wasn't coming a while for the Hawks too, but bare in mind we've had a team a LOT longer too I believe. ;)

Of course though I meant that the Steelers have just been working their asses off, so for us it has been a long time coming...  Gotta figure guys like Bettis have really deserved a championship and just never gotten it...  Cowher's been judged all his career on this factor and now it'll be tough to do so...  It's a long time coming for damn near any team that gets it though, that's for sure.  Short of the Pats right now anyway. :)

Toy Reviews / Re: The Saga Collection General Veers
« on: February 6, 2006, 01:43 AM »
Good review Hunter though I think I'd disagree on some points that I found to be problematic...  They're little specific things.

For instance, I'm a huge detractor of the molded-on hat.  It would have been extra, but I think the way the helmet sorta bows outward because of the hat and less than "perfect" fit, it just should have been a removable Officer's Kepi in my opinion.  Plus as a customizer, I have to wish for that.  I think it's a law, I'm not sure. :)

Also it makes the helmet lack a chin strap which was in the movie I believe, and looks better with it as recent figures have shown us.

Anyway, I'd also note that no back piece to the armor is disappointing.  Again, it would be that little "extra" effort for Hasbro to do this, and personally I think they could have without a LOT of extra effort and made Veers truly perfect.

And last I think knees are a huge detractor on Veers for a couple reasons.  First, they made his boots swivel for no real legitimate reason...  This took "extra" on their part that easily could have been ball/socket knee joints.  Now why are knee joints SO important?  Well because Veers is a GOOD template for future repaints if they had done him right.  As he stands now though, he is not in my eyes a good re-usable sculpt.  If they'd done the knee joints, I personally would have loved for Hasbro to have just done a new head/helmet for hima nd given us a Death Star Trooper.  Use the body again and make generic grey-tuniced Officers with various heads...  That would have cut costs on those potential future uses of the sculpt, and made up for anything incurred making an extra accessory or two.

A minor gripe one could make I think is his height...  He is a bit tall.

Still, he's got lots of positives.  I think his likeness is amazing, his sculpt is sharp and the best of any Impy to-date (despite the height), and while I'm not a huge fan of the arms being posed the way they are, I find them to be adequate.  I'll probably even get an extra Veers for parts, I just won't be army building Veers like I KNOW I would have if they'd articulated and accessorized him like I personally think they should have.

If I had to give it a 5 star rating I'd say he's a 3.  right in the middle...  Good, but not "amazing" tot he point I want to buy tons of these for any particular reason.

The Wookiee Arcade / Re: Which one's the best?
« on: February 6, 2006, 01:29 AM »
I played Bounty Hunter all the way through again this past week, and I have to say this is one of the most innovative games, and has one of the most compelling storylines of any Video Game I've ever played...  It really makes me wish they'd continue it with a whole series on a number of bounty hunters.  Obviously a Boba Fett one set in the classic (or just prior to ANH) era would be the next big step but I could see doing ones based ona  number of characters...

It's not the best since it's only one...  I'm still leaning towards the X-Wing/TIE Fighter (I consider them all one game line) series to be the tops, but Bounty Hunter's really a favorite of mine.  Highly overlooked by gamer fans I think.

The weather is EVERYTHING it should be for a Pittsburgh Super Bowl Win.  :)  Just in time too, we were in the 40's and 50's just a day or two ago.

With all the stuff like Wind Chill it was a frigid 11 degrees tonight as people were running (many partially nude) in the streets celebrating.  :)  At least we got these Terrible Towel's to keep us warm baby!

Jeff, sorry for the late reply, but congratulations man...  :)  You deserve all the happiness I'm sure parenting gives you, so really I hope everything is safe and healthy for your wife and children, and that you don't stress too much as a father if you have a little girl...

I've got a number of neices...  I can only fathom what I'd feel if i were their father instead of just their uncle.  That's been stressful enough!

I'm bummed about that too Bill, and I really hope Stern does some kind of tribute to him Monday because Al Lewis was a HUGE part of the Stern show for years.  I know he considered him a friend and was sad he couldn't make it to the farewell K-Rock show due to his health.

The guy was a riot on Stern though, very funny.

First, I'm ecstatic.   ;D  This has been a LONG time coming in Pittsburgh, and the city is in a freaking frenzy right now.  Tons of celebrating obviously, only 8 arrests the news said, and no real rioting or anything but just good heavy celebrating.

The game was a rollercoaster...  My stomach's eaten to bits at the moment I think.  I gotta get some Pepto.  :)  Seriously though, this was fun, I'm glad it's over, I'm gonna maybe make the rally downtown (or "DahnTahn" as they say here) on Tuesday...  I thought the game was really good in a competitive way on both team's parts, but at the same time I thought both teams played below their potential on some levels and at their potential on others.  In that way it evened out and that's what made it competitive...  Nobody was mistake-free tonight though, and believe me I was Mother F'n the television a number of times.

I'm happy as a clam right now, I'm loving this...  The last champion we had was the 92 Penguins team and god knows they're not near that this year.  The Pirates have sucked since about the same time too and haven't won a championship in as long or longer than the Steelers.  So this was nice...  It was also nice that they won again because my dad was a Steel Worker all his life, and a die-hard fan for the Steelers, so I'm glad for him since I know it's a good time for him.

Also the fans in the city are just loving this, it's insane...  Plus guys like Myron Cope (Long-time Steelers announcer who just retired due to failing health) has got to be loving this...  This is f'n great.

Now we just need to keep the Penguins here.   ::)

On the specifics, I'm not going to disagree that officiating in the NFL is sporatic at best Dave, but I do disagree that both plays cited were bad calls.

Jackson pushed off because if you watch his defender's feet, they're both off the ground yet he still moves backwards while leaning towards Jackson...  It wasn't a BIG push, but a push nonetheless by my eyes...

On the Roethlisberger run, I thought it was a TD by watching him in the air in slow...  The rule is he just has to have the ball on the line in any capacity, not over it, and when he's in the air it looks like it to me, and that he's hit and pushed back away from the line...  It was close, but I'm trying to be unbiased in my opinion as hard as that is and I still think it was a TD...  That will be examined and re-examined for a long time I think though.

There were holds and stuff on both sides though that were not called or were iffy calls...  It wasn't the greatest officiated SB, but the playoffs have been a trainwreck this year with officiating so I'm not surprised, and if anything I think it was better than the Pats got in their loss and the Steelers had with Cincy.

As far as Porter's comments, I'll have to go look back if I can and find the quotes.  I don't recall him saying he was gonna hurt people but then again I don't think Porter's shown that he's a "dirty" player either for any quote he made to be considered that way either.  If he said, "I'm taking (Seattle Player's Name) knees out, that's it" or some asinine stuff...  Yeah, that's dumb, but you also don't go into football saying that you're gonna lay the other team down softly when you takcle them...  I think Porter did what he always does, which is talk ****.  The irony is POrter wasn't a big issue in the game today.  He was part of the D overall but not a shining example by any means...  It was all a non-issue and some say around here that it was even perpetuated in an attempt to draw media off Roethlisberger who looked visibly scared prior to the game's start today and who said he has never been so shaken and nervous...  Either way it was a very much non-issue anyway.

I like the Spud line...  It's a neat little novelty but man I could really be content with it not going too much further. :)  They're cool but these are the kinda things I leave packaged and think a full set will look really nice displayed, ya know?

Spud2-D2 is pretty cool looking though...  The little holo Spuddess Leia looks like it could be the preview of a regular one though.  This line could just keep going and going.

My concern with that technique CHEWIE is the size of the Commando armor.  It's a bit "bulky" compared to the basic armor it seems, so I'm wagering the figure's when compared side-by-side would show that Commando's armor is substantially thicker.

Just a guess by my eyes on this one though, I could be wrong.  I know I'm highly bummed he doesn't have knee articulation though so I'm gonna be looking into "fixing" this Hasbro FUBAR myself.

18135
It's shaping up pretty good so far.  You're going for Jango or Boba?  Or a wholely new Mandalorian?

I always sorta gasp for breath when I see XD figures cut up (I collect them along with SW) but they make probably the best fodder out there.  Their sculpts closest match the Star Wars line while BBI's detail surpasses Hasbro so limbs tend to not blend in as well using the Elite Force line.

The XD line looks great though,r eally nice work...  Those OMG Para's just started shipping but they have just that much more fodder to use.

Looking good so far Dre, keep us posted on it.
