What does it mean to be "Preview's exclusive"?

I really should find a way to post this in some sort of FAQ since it comes up everytime a new Previews exclusive shows up...  :P

"Previews" is the catalog put out by Diamond Comics Distributors (http://www.diamondcomics.com/public/).

Previous "Previews" exclusives include the Death Star Briefing set, Republic Commandos sets, the Rebel Logo TIE, and the Sandcrawler to name a few.  If it is sold through Previews, then any local comic book shop and all the big on-line shops (BBTS, EE, etc) should have it...

Which sorta negates the term "exclusive", hah.  I used to always get a good look at the Previews catalogue back when my hometown had a comic shop but that closed up eons ago.  Miss getting a look in the book. :(

If my eyes are not mistaken the legs appear to be the same mold as the TAC Training Fatigue Clone Trooper. They have the same stupid stance too. Anyone else agree?

I have to say this is a very easy pass and a very odd choice given that Crimson Empire is not that popular. (Maybe in the late 90's since there was not that much SW to go around)
I never got the appeal of the Crimson Guard thing, in fact I am very much inspired to rip apart my Canor Jax set of figures for customs after seeing this set. This is a really terrible set, there are so many better EU things to focus on. For a collector focused set why are they slapping in two figures that we have more than enough of?

if this had a Green Ninja I may have bought it......

I'm glad this was my least favorite part of the comic... this is a mega-morphing pass for me. Also, what is with all the hatred for the Crimson Empire series? I really liked both stories, but that might have more to to with getting both Graphic Novels for $3 each.

What the **** kind of stupid **** is this? Maybe I'll buy it if it comes with some new Megazords. And a Green Ranger. Or a White Ranger. Or Alpha-5. Hell, why not just throw in a TP roll, paint Palpatine's face on it and pretend it's Zordon?

I'm actually in the minority here I guess as pretty much digging this one.  What's not to like about Kir Kanos and Carnor Jax in their ninja training gear?

I actually passed on the Republic Commando set and the Death Star Briefing set, so I'm due anyhow.

If you like the Crimson Empire comics, you have to like this.

Yup.  I had the same reaction when I saw them this morning, and tried to squint and make a comparison, and it seems this is the case.  However, it looks like-- and maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me here-- that there are at least 2 unique torso sculpts, and possibly the arms are different as well?

(And where's the green dude?  Wookieepedia has one more named guy, they couldn't squeeze in greenie and dump the Emperor or something?)

I have to say this is a very easy pass and a very odd choice given that Crimson Empire is not that popular. (Maybe in the late 90's since there was not that much SW to go around)

Which is why it's "popular" in the sense that it has any level of awareness.  I won't say that it's great, but popular?  Yes, absolutely.  It's right up there with Heir to the Empire, Dark Empire, Shadows of the Empire (hey, there's a pattern here.)  Most Star Wars comic series just faded away into nothingness, yet fans kept talking this one up for quite some time.  As someone who picks up and reads all of these things since Dark Empire, I can say that a lot of them are extremely forgettable.  (Or at least, I forgot them.) Not so much Crimson Empire.

This one clicked.  OK, so you're not a fan, and I personally didn't much care for the human faces in the interior art, but it did introduce a bunch of neat looking characters and it seemed everybody and their brother made a custom Kir Kanos and/or Carnor Jax from when the series debuted until the release of the actual figures at the end of 2007.  For a miniseries that was "not that popular," it's probably one of the most widely known (and I assume widely read) series that Dark Horse put out.

This set is hardly essential, but as concept box sets go it's a pretty solid idea.   As comic series with any level of fan awareness go, Crimson Empire's near the top of a very short list.  The series was OK, but it really benefitted from gorgeous covers and amazing, memorable imagery.  You can blame these figures (and the three others so far from the series) on Dave Dorman's insane level of talent and the fallout from a few paintings he did like ten years ago.

Anyway, go go power rangers and such.  I hope they sneak in a cardboard Squall for them to fight on or something.

Post by: Jesse James on July 14, 2008, 07:11 PM
I think I may pull a wait and sale thing on these...  The previews sets have all been available cheaper in the last year so I may wait on these since I'm not digging them but wouldn't mind having the set.  Full price though, I think I'm out on that one...  Sorta wishing I'd waited on other sets like the Commandoes as they went for cheaper and ultimately I was disappointed with the articulation level of the figures...  They're not a bad deal at the price they're at though, but this set really just doesn't interest me like the Imp. Officers and Commandoes did as far as the character selection, so yeah, a sale may help me make the purchase...

At least if it eases up the shipping cost, I may be more pleased with the buy.

I thought this may have been the EE set, but none of these match up to any of the shadows in the pic (one should match per adam saying one fig in the pic was the real shadow.)

I kind of dig them, at least it something new somewhat.

It doesn't really match the EE description of being an exclusive that "includes 6 unique action figures and accessories" either - maybe 4, and that would be pushing it.

Based on the photo provided the only thing that appears to be different to me is the heads underneath the helmets. While there does appear to be a slight crease difference on the torsos I cannot see Hasbro tooling 2 different torsos for this set, it's too minor of a difference. I think it might be the lightning playing tricks on both of us. You may be right, it's really hard to tell. No mistaking the legs though.......

I have to say this is a very easy pass and a very odd choice given that Crimson Empire is not that popular. (Maybe in the late 90's since there was not that much SW to go around)

I have to respectfully disagree with this being a solid concept box set. I am not just saying that for the sake of disagreeing either.  To me, a collector focused exclusive set that includes two repacks of very common characters that collectors have had enough of (sans a kick ass ROTJ Emperor) strikes me as two bad choices right off the bat. I would understand the choices if this was going to be a mass retail set, but it's not. Combine those two repacks with four very obscure non-troop & non-saber wielding colorful power ranger-esk ninja characters makes the BF II sets look irresistible. Most E-Tailers could not even sell out of the Briefing room and that was a good boxed set. I understand Hasbro's repaints & repacks necessity in certain sets but this one makes no sense to me at all. Looking at fan reaction across the major SW websites, this is one set that has not been well received so far. I have supported every internet boxed set (including the very atrocious BF II sets which I only kept 3 figures from the two sets: Gonk, Jet trooper & Engineer) I have no desire to see any fail, I want Hasbro to continue making them. I just do not see this as a good choice for a set, I want to support this one but just can't.  On a more positive note, I am really looking forward to your EE set, I already have 2 sets on pre-order. I know you wont let us down, every set you have made thus far has rocked. (Please no B-Wing dudes.....Please no B-Wing dudes.........)

I do agree that Crimson Empire is a well known DH comic (to the 27+ crowd). Kir Kanos was really the only requested figure from that comic, Canor Jax did get some fan love too. Outside of that I have not read or heard one request for any other characters from Crimson Empire series since their comic pack was made 2 years ago. If there is requests please share, I am open to being wrong on that one. The hardcore guys got the one figure they wanted - Kir Kanos, and they were given some icing with Canor Jax. Comics like HTTE, SOTE and DE are still populating fans top 10 wants lists to this day.

Outside of that Crimson Empire falls into the realm of the Boba Fett comics. Forgettable except for the main character.

This would have been awesome in 1999.

Now, well, not so much. Hasbro missed the boat with Crimson Empire, methinks they're better off forgetting about it entirely, almost ten years later. It's too bad it took them so long to embrace the EU.

My take on how this set got greenlighted is the success of the EE Mandalore's last year. Multicolored bodyswaps and some ringers. Hasbro was looking for something else in the same vein and came upon this old concept.

On the one hand, at least it is already existing EU and not something they totally made up like the rainbow Mandos. On the other hand, Mandos are uniquely Star Wars looking, while Royal Guard Trainees are boring-old earth ninjas straight out of Mortal Kombat.

Nothing here to make me want it. (and for the record I passed on the EE Mandos too.)

I have to admit I'm not overly familiar with the entire Crimson Empire series, so that might be why this doesn't really hold much interest to me.  A definite pass here, there's more than enough other stuff to buy this year the way it is.

Ordinarily I would happily buy all Imperials, but these are just sort of... dorky looking. I'll wait to see how it looks in a store before I make a decision - if they had done something cooler like "types of the Royal Guard" with some guards in fighting gear and a few with the staffs to guard the Emperor, it would have been totally rocking and I'd be super enthusiastic, but this set doesn't really fit anywhere.

Well at least with all the people taking a pass, I won't have any trouble ordering my 2 sets.

It's Kir Kanos and Carnor Jax people.  Dammit.

I'm not knocking this set, but it really lacks :-\. Why offer Palpatine and Vader once again ::)? I don't think I can stomach another Vader for a very long time ::).  I'm really done with him until something new in figure making comes along. And that version of Palpatine is there too.

I wonder if the helmets are removable? Might add something to this set worth picking up. I like that they are trying to give us something new, but the whole rainbow trooper thing is getting old ::). I'm even cutting back on the Clone and not even coming near the Stormtroopers in rainbow colors ::).

New pics at RS (http://www.rebelscum.com/sdcc08/Hasbro/multipacks/image21.asp).  Looks like the headgear is removable which is nice to see.

Power Ranger jokes aside, I actually don't hate this set [*dodges rocks*].  I remember enjoying the CE stories when I read them, and I sort of dig the whole "training" gear as sort of a nod to samurai/warrior training in feudal Japan.

I don't really now if the helmet thing changes anything for me. I know the price is high for just 4 figures that are worth anything in this set. You really can't even give the Palpatine and Vader away now a days ::). Even kids have five or six of them in their collections.

Anyway all that aside, isn't it odd to get Vader is this set when he never set foot on the planet they trained on? The Emperior I can see, but not Vader. Could have save money and offered another color of the Guard. I guess it's too much to ask Hasbro to be accurate.

Vader does visit the planet in the comics; he duels one of the trainees... one who isn't in the pack. I think this set is meant to replicate the scene of the "final duels" between the trainees, with the Emperor & Vader watching, to see which become royal guards.

Clicky to check it out!

Obviously we've known what was coming but the set seems to have fallen off most people's radar since the initial discussion.  I'd honestly almost forgotten about this piece...  I'm more interested in the EE "Joker Squad" set but the price on this set has me re-interested in it.  A "good deal" is tough to come by these days in this hobby so I'm liking this now a little more for some reason because it just feels like more for your money for some reason.

I'm curious to see if the final figures use those bad "Training Gear Clone" legs too.  If they ultimately do (tough to tell by the photo), I'm gonna probably pass on this one at least till a discount.  That'll be the make-or-break point for me I believe.

It would appear they added some eye bag deco to the Emperor to look more like the OTC version, yet another minor upgrade from the Order 66 2 version. It matches the Saga2 re-release deco a bit more in terms of face.

I ordered one of these awhile back, at least the Vader and Palps make good custom fodder so it made the purchase easier for me. If the Palps has better deco that will help a little too.

I do love the idea and execution of this set and I'll happily buy this.

But if you're buying action figures because you feel like you have to do it, and not because you want them or like them, then you unquestionably have a problem.  I'm not a psychologist and don't know what it is, but it's something.

I don't know I'm seeing some custom fodder there Chewie, well I guess with the money that I'm saving on not buying crap I'm mean the "Moisture farm" I can spend here.

ya well considering the amount of customs you come up with I'm sure your fodder bin runneth over.  I really don't have the room, yet, for the homestead so I'll stick with the figures, but damn what am I going to do with another freaking Vader.

Our sources came up with a new photo of the Previews Exclusive Crimson Empire Training Pack.  I'm still not sure I'm gonna buy this set, but I think if I see it on sale I'd gladly grab it.  The price is pretty decent...  Just wish we had one more trainee and one less repack I guess.

Clicky to check it out!

I have no clue (maybe you can tell) what the legs look like...  I'm hoping they're not those crummy Clone Trainee legs but that's what they appeared to be on earlier photos.  Now they look less like that, but it's tough for me to tell.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I don't hate this set.  Granted it's not the coolest box set ever, but I enjoyed reading the CE stories back in the day so I'll gladly add these to my collection.  I think they will look fine next to the other CE figures Hasbro has done...

Good news if they're all new, and hopefully don't have the poorly sculpted ankles like the Training Clone had.  I still look at that figure with some disgust.

To me, considering the fact that FOUR of the SIX figures in this set share the same body and only have unique heads underneath the masks, I would hope that these guard trainee bodies are all-new sculpts.

Same:

swivel-cut elbows, ball-hinged knees, & not articulation on the ankles.

The Only think I like that two of them are Kir & Jax... I'm not fan of buying online, neither I have a Special SW store where u can find these exclusives like other locations, I sadly... hmmm probably pass on it... or I hope I get luckier & they can join my small group....dough I have all the Comics, its awesome... Not that I would want to waste a JediDefender Q&A slot on this, but I'd love to see this question asked in the next Hasbro Q&A....

Quote
Why did you decide to cheap-out with the sculpt for the Emperor's Guard Trainee body? The limited number of articulation points and the oddly sculpted left ankle FORCE you to pose all four of the trainees in pretty much the exact same pose!

For the same price couldn't ball jointed shoulders, elbows, torsos, hips, knees and ankles all been put into the sculpt and just throw out the Vader and Emperor figures? (i.e. make it a set of FOUR super-articulated figures for $40)

You always claim that you need a visual presentation or a "story" with each item, but exclusives like this, that are sold only in comic shops or online, should not fall into that category. The person who will seek out this set already has PLENTY of Vader figures and PLENTY of Emperor figures. This is not the kind of set that Bobby is going to see at WalMart or Toys-R-Us and ask his mommy to buy, only to get home and cry that the guards don't have a Vader to "spar" with.

This set smacks of Hasbro thinking "How LITTLE can we get away with and still charge $40?" as opposed to "What kind of additional value can we offer the collector community for $40?" In this day-and-age with how much articulation Hasbro throws into a figure like Yarna, Hasbro should be ashamed of themselves for even putting this set out.

Can you tell I just opened this set?  ;D

This set SUCKS - plain and simple. Due to the stupid way they sculpted the left ankle, I can't get ANY of my Trainee figures to stand on their own. They stuck stands in with the Droid Battlefront 2 packs - they should have put stands in with this set to at least soften the blow that the four figures you REALLY bought the set for all suck 'cause they all have the same stinky body.
Title: Re: Previews "Crimson Empire: The Crucible" Box Set
Post by: Theta 288 on December 24, 2008, 11:47 AM
Thats just Horrible.

We have so many SW figures that can't even stand, that include the AT-TE.

I wonder what is worst... a Batman collection or this issue.  And why many times they choose to no make full articulation on the best caracters of the packs...Delta Squad pack, Crimson & some Comic Pack... They are just cheap, of course they know that even so, they get the money.

PS: I got a feeling that would happen to those figs... I can't take out of my mind when I look at them to think in the New Hope rebels that also suck & can't stand.

You may need to buy some of those glass looks stands, that way you can feel more better about it.
Title: Re: Previews "Crimson Empire: The Crucible" Box Set
Post by: Pete_Fett on December 24, 2008, 12:05 PM
Remember those gray/blue stands that came with the ROTS AT-TE Gunner/501st Clone figures? They also came with the senators, Dooku, Palpatine and Mas Amedda (sp?)

Well - anyway, I took four of those and clicked them together into a square - the resulting pegs are far enough apart to have on one side Carnor Jax "dueling" with Alum Frost and Kir Kanos "dueling" with Lemmet Tauk. It looks "okay" - since like I mentioned in my previous post, the pose options are limited, the only thing that kinda makes it look decent is the rainbow colors on the uniforms.

Minimally ball-jointed shoulders would have really made a difference with these figures.

I'm waiting for clearance/sale price on this set.  Partially because I honestly don't recall the story they're from, and partially because Hasbro used those **** legs when they've got a wealth of molds that are better, that they could've dipped into for legs..  Those legs are retarded, and the molds for them should be destroyed.

Not only does the articulation suck, but look at those paintjobs! Awful. You can especially tell in the comparison shots with the new Jax/Kanos and the original Jax/Kanos set.

This set HAD potential but the articulation and paint still makes it a very easy pass for me.

Wow! I haven't opened mine yet, but they didn't look at all like the same legs. That stinks even more. I had been considering just stowing he bodies and using the head elsewhere, the more and more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to do it. And I apologize to whomever I told that they were all new legs.

# Darth Vader is a repack of the figure from 2006's A New Hope Commemorative Tin Collection set (The Best Vader out there)

Emperor Palpatine is a slight repaint of the figures from 2005's The Sith Evolutions set.  :)

This place is really great.  It's called Zeus Comics and if you pre-order or are a regular customer they give you 15% off everything.  They wanted $39.99 for the set, and it came out to about $36 after the discount, plus the tax.

This is where I do all my regular (non-exclusive) Gentle Giant shopping too.

I've been thinking about going to a comic shop to check out this set.  But it's been fairly low on my priority list.  The idea was cool, and I think the backstory of the Royal Guards is interesting.  But it looks kind of silly.

I'd actually be into getting another Kir Kanos.  But only really in his Kenix Kil disguise from a one-shot comic that was done about him taking on the identity of a bounty hunter.

I checked the comic pack Kir/Jax also are too small for stormies/snowee's neck... they only fit tightly in clone pilot evolution, wich is not the period that you want.
I dont know how big is the neck ball joint of Han/Luke stormies, but I guess they will not fit as well  :(

I picked up this atrocious set from EE. The quality was off on this one, not Sarlacc BP off but off none the less. It really lived up to the bad expectations of many members of months ago that it would suck bantha balls. The figures cannot even stand on their own unless you use the blade staff as a crutch. the Kir Kanos paint scheme does not match the comic version. (I hate inconsistency with characters.) On top of that they look like a bunch of short Napoleons, with old school arm articulation. PASS if you still can!

On a positive note I am looking forward to the next two waves of Legacy.....
