FREEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!

Cursed plastic coffins, let our figures breathe!

This could wind up being a very entertaining thread, especially when someone opens up a vintage figure.  :P

Heh. Hemish, it looks like you took a little too much pleasure in roughing up Sacul's packaging. ;D

Did anybody see the fanfilm "Figure Club" (recently played at CIII), which deals with a similar subject? Near the end our hero opens his vintage Vader, accompanyed by much groaning and squirming in the audience--I'm an opener, but even I was freaked out--but the filmmakers chickened out and didn't show it on camera. :P

Nice work, Hemish!  I recall a similar thread to this in the Vintage section at RS a few years back, and the fella really riled some guys up with that!  A real hard to find POTF figure, IIRC.  Good stuff!

This would be a great place to showcase the opening of my complete set of 77' 12 backs.

I think Rob's just yankin' our chain here, since there were no 12-backs in 1977.  ;)

Yeah, well I'm waiting for my big raise before I start collecting Vintage Carded - loose is working well enough for me at the moment.

When did the 12 backs start and what did the backs look like in 77'?

The 12 backs came out in '78.

But you could get the Early Bird Gift Certificate for Christmas of '77!   :P

(just messin', Rob)   ;)

BTW, this kinda reminds of the few times that Jared's actually opened up figures at my house.  Slightly different twist here, but he threw away all the packaging when he was finished opening, but as soon as he left, I dug all of his loose cardbacks out of the trash.  Shame on him me!  :-[

But the EB kits didn't have cards.

That's why I just mentioned the EB Gift Certificate.  Didn't the actual EB kit itself come out in '78 as well?  That's what I recall.  You could just give the kids the certificate, or whatever it was at Christmas of '77, that showed they'd be getting the kit with figures soon after that.  ;)

Whoops, I misread your comment there, Matt.  You meant that they didn't come carded.  Gotchya.  Yeah.  Even worse opening up one of the actual EB kits!  :o  But at least you'd get a DT Luke out of it...

By the way, who's the funny lookin' dude with the devil eyes up there in Dale's post?  Scary...

Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Morgbug on August 5, 2005, 11:30 PM
Actually, no.  Honestly it sounds worse, like some of the vibration is greater and the sound is actually less clear.

While I'm at it, I pulled the POTF2 Vader (orange card, long saber, pardon the dust) to do a wee comparison of them since I thought it was a POTF2 Vader in there.  While they are really similar, there's some serious differences going on.

-the legs on the C3 Vader do not move
- C3 Vader has newly sculpted arms and articulated wrists (no, the right hand is not removable)
- the head sculpt is different
- the torso is different as well, so while it's really similar, it's quite different

Am I mistaking the wrong Vader or was that the original figure everyone thought it was?

(BTW, those long lasting energy efficient lights make for crap pictures)

Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Morgbug on August 5, 2005, 11:53 PM
Could be, but there is no articulation in the legs of the C3 version.  Was there in the 25th anniversary?  I haven't opened that one.

Matt, I remember that thread well, though I am wondering if it was on CSW, prior to the RS merger. I believe it was Chewbacca99, aka DeathStarDroid, who tore open a vintage figure and man was the vintage group really upset. I found it all to be hilarious, good times much like this thread so far.

I've been wanting to join in on the fun.  I've always been a carded guy, but recently have been buying extras to open.

So here's my contribution.  A ROTS #41 SA Clone Trooper.

Of course, the army builders have done this a ton of times.  So there needed to be an extra element added.

Our Clone is suddenly in a hurry to leave - he's burst through the package and trying to escape?

Our Clone is triumphant and freed from his fiery prison!   ;)

(Don't worry, Dale.  This isn't the Clone that you shipped to me so carefully - I couldn't be that cruel.   ;D)

If I had an extra, I'd do it. Sure. Give some people heart attacks, I'm sure, but what the hell, it would be a hell of a lot of fun. Hell, I'd videotape that and post it.

JV2 you may be in luck, I think I actually have another Darktrooper somewhere that I never opened. Or at the very least I have a Spacetrooper... will that do? Maybe I'll find one of each  ;D

Hmmm, no luck with the EU figures. They are buried way back in the room that has become known as "The Black Hole" (aka my collection room) - but I think I may have found something else to satiate the masses.

Be back in a few with some pics.

And I'll see if I can't dig out those EU figures sometime during the week.

OK, here goes... this figure is kinda like one of the minor "Holy Grail" figures, or at least he used to be...

"Damn, I'm bored of being here in this stupid box...."

"My friggin' arms are too short to reach the top!!"

"Maybe if I just pound away at this plastic, it'll break..."

"That's a start... "

"Ahhh, much better. I can feel the fresh air on my face again... oh wait, no I can't."

"Yes!! Freedom!!"

"Damn, I forgot my gun... can't shoot any RebelScum without my gun, can I??"

"Got my pistol and I'm ready to go. Not that I can actually hit anything, but... ya know, just in case."

And I was told that if I do happen to find those EU figures Jesse2, I'm not allowed to open them. Someone here needs them for his collection  ::)

And by the way, that Biker Scout has got to be one of the best looking 12" figures.  Most of them are too "toy like" and don't have much appeal to me.

Ok my turn to make a contribution to the comedic briliance that is this thread...

Today's story revolves around Shocktroopers Bob and Joe. Poor Joe has been encased in a plastic cell by the Separtists. With no hope for escape, Joe sees his life flash before his eyes, but Bob isn't giving up!

Joe: Oh this is the end, the end for sure.
Bob: Nonsense! I'll get you out in a jiffy <pulls out blaster and fires>
Joe: Hey watch where you're pointing that thing, you coulda hit little Joey!
Bob: Yeah keyword, little!

Bob: Well that didn't work, time to pull out the big artillery
Joe: Oh ****! This is not good, just leave me be!

KABOOM!

Joe: Owie, owie, owie!
Bob: WHOA! That rocked!
Joe: It hurts, it hurts!
Bob: Hmmm, you're still stuck in there, gimme your hand...

Bob: Come on Joe, don't give up, you're almost free.
Joe: Forget it man, this thing is never letting me go!
Bob: Almost there, almost there.

Bob: See, I told you I'd get you out, no sweat.
Joe: Oh the horror, the horror. <Sucking thumb> I want my mommy!
Bob: Ummm, Joe we don't have a mommy. We have a petri dish.
Joe: I gotta make pee-pee.

That's All Folks!  ;D

Hmmm . . . I am an opener lacking a digital camera (until end of Sept., then I get one for free!); I could show Padme Ascension, Sio Bibble (x2), TC-14x2, R2-B1 x2, all the Silver figures . . . my EU figures are open, though I believe I still have a carded set . . .
Now that would be nice. We moved 5 months ago and I still haven't found my Royal Naboo Starship. That would be nice to open when/if I can find it!

As for Ep. III, I opened one of my Green Commanders today, and the rest are already free! This thread has been enjoyable.

Actually, I've been pretty good about him putting away toys, and they are with his other SW figures and toys.  They are not broken - yet.  I can't say that Clone Troopers, Han and Padme haven't lost limbs (or heads) in the past, but these are so far, so good.  I do have Luke's gun in my purse, and I should probably remove the lightsaber as well.  What I've done in the past is take the identification card and the small pieces that go with the figure then baggie them in a "zipper snack bag".  That way when he's older, and more "responsible" he can have the accessories.  There are a few lost guns, rifles and lightsabers, though.
Thanks Tamidala :)  He looks just like his father though.  I never thought I would have a blue eyed, blonde son!

Maybe it's just wrong of me to think this, but what would it look like to BURN a figure out of it's packaging... I'm thinking end of summer/Labor Day Weekend BBQ packaging... see the plastic bubble slowly melt...

I have issues...

I was going to call Hemish a ***** because those bubbles were so yellow.  I'll hold off though because those cardbacks were pretty sweet.

I can say this much about vintage figures though: I wish I'd picked up many of them on bad cards to open, so they'd truly be minty.  I've gone through multiples of several figures trying to find a good one.  X-wing Luke as an example I think I'm on my fourth.  Would have been cheaper to by a carded version by now.

Those 3 figures cost me $100 so it wasnt a huge deal and the cardbacks are going to a mate who was a bit upset with me for letting my son rip open the klaatu because he still needed that  card thats why i used the knife , other wise it was gonna be some sort of flamage to open them hehehe.

Though opened a while back here are my exclusives.  And btw, that is too crazy Hemish. Those cards looked pretty good.  Ive opened about 6-8 vintage over the last year or tow but the cards were beat up.  My only regret was a POTF Amanaman I opened a while back.  Only because I couldnt find a complete version at the time.  The day after I opened they seemed to be everywhere.

Welcome to the next episode.  Sorry for the lack of theatrics but it was fun enough just to open these.  The yellow tinge is caused by the energy saving lightbulbs I've foolishly installed.   ::)

It sucks when you don't have a digital camera to share in the fun and coronary explosions that this thread has probably caused.  :-[

That said, I'm sure the line-up of the Darktrooper, Spacetrooper, Sio Bibble, TC-14, R2-B1, Battle Amidala, CW SA Clone, Holo Emperor, Holo Sidious, R2-D2 with Holo Leia, Motti, Hooded Leia, and the Unleashed Stormtrooper hanging out in front of their packaging, discussing politics and the price of tea in China would be amusing, I suppose.  I'll have to see if I can swing that.

Great thread, Hemish!  :)

I've got to say that I'm a bit disturbed by the number of vintage figures being opened up here... Yellow Bubble or not, there are plenty of nice minty loose figures on Ebay.
Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Matt_Fury on October 2, 2005, 02:57 PM
Me too Rob, but I don't have a problem with vinty figs being opened when the cards are pretty beat up.

Now if it was a near mint card, nice bubble and there was someone on these boards who needed it.  That would just be mean spirited imo.
Title: Re: Open figure theatre

this is kinda what i was trying to get at.  even for the common carded figures there are zillions more of them loose.  nobody here has exactly opened up a dt kenobi or esb offerless 4lom, but still just opening random vintage figures can't help the hobby in any way.

Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Ben on October 2, 2005, 05:45 PM
I'm sure it helps the value of remaining carded figures go up.  :P
Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Morgbug on October 2, 2005, 07:54 PM
Hmmm, you guys must not do to well then finding vinty carded figures.   Look closely at the cards.

As for finding good, loose vinty figures on ebay, yeah, they are there.  But I sure as hell don't have much luck finding them or getting hold of them.  I look very closely at pictures, I email sellers for better pictures and still I wish that for about 50% of my vintage loose collection I'd just bought a crappy carded figure to begin with.  I've bought multiples of numerous figures as I try to upgrade to something decent.  It doesn't have to have uber stiff limbs, just tight; paint doesn't have to be perfect, but I'd prefer to know about the teeth marks on the back of the figure ::); I'd prefer a legitimate vintage weapon, not a repro.

And no, I'm not just buying the super bargains off there.  Hell, I paid a good price for a brown snake Yoda, just to get the frigging correct cane and sure as **** they send the wrong cane with it.  I'm still without the proper cane for my brown snake Yoda.  If I see a beat card brown snake Yoda and can get it for $30-35, you can believe you'll see pics of it being opened here.

It's a pain in the ass - jacked up shipping fees because apparently Canada is on the other side of the universe ::)  Dishonest sellers shipping repro weapons or quite probably, figures that were not pictured.

As for that Sise Fromm, look hard at the card.  The damn thing was so wrinkled it's soft.  I paid about the same, if not a little less than a loose figure is currently going for and that included the shipping.  I should wait and pay more for a figure?

As for hurting the hobby, I'm not clear exactly how that's happening?  I'd suggest while there are zillions of loose figures out there, I think everyone sort of underestimates the amount of carded stuff out there.  I think there are ample examples and I'm uncertain why opening a card pretty much no one would display is an issue. ???  I've got some beautiful trilogo cardbacked figures, I'm not opening those.  I understand the appeal of a M/NM cardback, really I do.  But stuff the average collector would be embarassed to have carded?  That can't be opened?

Again, exercise your eyes and sharp vintage skills.  Look again at the pictures.  Tell me what you see.

Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Morgbug on October 3, 2005, 08:13 PM
Not quite.  I'm contentious, but not that bad.  It's a partial reseal.  Look at the left side of the bubble, it had already been mostly opened, including some tearing of the backing paper.  It looks fine, but it's already partially opened.
Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: john todd on October 3, 2005, 11:34 PM
i saw that, but figured you would have mentioned reseal or lifting bubble if it was.  also, i have a palitoy boushh that the bubble slipped or something that has a white stripe like that, so i didn't jump to that conclusion.

anyhow, i am glad to hear that it wasn't as nice as it seemed at 1st glance.  also, i hope you didn't pay $35 for a reseal.
Title: Re: Open figure theatre
Post by: Morgbug on October 4, 2005, 12:17 AM
$15.  And I have a nice cardback to boot.

Glad you saw it, you had me worried there.  And as for the Sise card, honestly, it has so many creases it wobbles.  It would look straight in a star case, but it bends over on its own.  Also a hole punched in the upper portion.  The card is maybe a C2 with a C9 bubble :-\  It was begging to be opened ;)
