Saga Collection '06 / Re: The Motives Of Scalpers
« on: March 29, 2006, 10:40 AM »
The motives of scalpers are irrelevant in the end. This is all about supply and demand. Scalpers exists because collectors go to them to buy the stuff. I have done it before when I used to be a carded collector but now I rather not have a figure than give in to that.

If nobody bought from them, scalping would not be a profitable venture but alas collecting (not only SW but anything) lacks patience and here is where scalpers make their money.

I know that a lot of you do not give into scalpers (and many more will claim that even though they do). Still for every person that does not give in, there is one or maybe two that do.

You are absolutely right, the frenzy is what feeds them, and SW now has a frenzy.

I will defend some people who purchase from ebay. I am lucky enough to live in a city with a couple dozen Targets and a bunch of Wal Marts. I find virtually everything I want at retail, although sometimes it takes longer than I would like. I'm also lucky enough to be able to order some cases here and there when there is an assortment that fills a lot of holes. Some people don't have the luxury of these options, and ebay becomes the place to "shop" for these items. This doesn't justify the ridiculous prices some of these reach, and even if you are reduced to ebay you should show good judgement and patience. People who spend $50.00 (or more) on the first figure to hit the auction block are driving the scalpers to make these things a priority, because the payoff is huge if you get in early.
Patience, you must learn patience.

And they are part of a community- They know each other, some like each other, some don't. They end up at the same swap meets with the same stuff. The one's I knew saw it as a game, and they liked to be better at it than the others. A couple of them used to have a store near me, but it closed up a few years ago. It was kind of nice, because I could drop in and see what had hit, and often find out when and where. Hot Wheels, Beanie babies, sport cards, pokemon, it was whatever could make a buck. I don't think they collected any of it for themselves.

I had posted this story in another thread, but it bears repeating here.

I went into Walmart the other day when they opened. As I was going back to SW, a guy with an armload of cars saw where I was headed and followed me back there. There was nothing on the pegs, but he says "I forgot about those silver stand figures, I have to remember to keep those on the list."

So there it is for Hasbro. Mission accomplished, the buzz is back in the line.

Received my newforce case of wave 4, which is actually wave 2.5. I finally have a UT clone to open, and a scorch.  :)

This is definately fraud, and ebay should be removing both user-ids from the site.

I would back out on principal. This guy is a crook. There are plenty of non-crooks to get our fixes from.

Even if he dings you with negative feedback, once his id is closed, it will not count against you.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Army Building or Hoarding?
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:03 PM »
Another deterrent to army building is Hasbro's new love of dirt and wear on figures. That might be fine as a variant, but having a clean version first seems the way to go. I now have 3 UT clones, and look at them thinking I don't want any more because of the paint apps. It makes sense that there would be more than one clean trooper in any given diorama, but 95 guys all with the same "wear" and "damage"? It just doesn't look right.

GIVE US CLEAN STORMTROOPERS, SANDTROOPERS, CLONES, BATTLE DROIDS, BIKERSCOUTS AND SNOWTROOPERS.  And package them in paper bags with marker saying what they are, so they can be priced reasonably.

I can't wait to see more of the sandtrooper. And I like the looks of the death star gunner too. A few more officers would be nice, or basic clean stormtroopers, but overall my army builder side is fairly satisfied.

That is part of the problem right there. If there are no UGH, they are just going to grab whatever else they think is hot (clones etc).   ::)

Pete, it looks like Grievous and scorch are shipping later. A quick check of ebay will tell you that there are virtually none in the system yet. Rest assured, they will hit. If you want to unload any of your current extras, I would gladly grab a couple  :)

Just another note about how collector friendly this concept is.

I ran into Wal Mart when they opened Saturday- on my way back to the toys I passed a guy carrying some cars. He saw where I was headed and followed me to the SW figures. There was nothing there, but he say "Oh yeah, I almost forgot about those silver stand figures, gotta keep those on the list."

Hasbro managed to get themselves back on the HW/flea dealer circuit. Bravo. Mission Accomplished.

I received confirmation of my wave 4 New Force case shipping, it is due to be here Monday. That is the wave with 2 scorch and clones, but no UGH.

Slow weekend for finds, but I continue to deplete stocks AT-AT and Sun Fac's when I find them.
I ran into a UGH Obi last week at Target, but nothing since despite some pretty dedicated hunting.
