You don't actually NEED a Dremel (or any other name brand rotary tool). What you certainly could use are the BITS they sell for the thing. They can be found loose or as part of sets from stores like Sears, Walmart, Home Depot and such.

For the sort of project you mention (hollowing a head for a ball joint), I normally drill a hole with a regular drill bit that is as close (but not quite) as thick as the ball of the neck. Then I insert one of those ball shaped dremel bits (one that most closely matches the size of the neck ball), all the way in and then turn it manually.

This will give you better control of what you are doing and reduce the risk of ruining/melting/losing the figure's head.

You will be needing a collet to hold the dremel bits, but most hobby shops will have a suitable pin vise if you ask around.

This figure is coming along really well. I can hardly wait to see it finished.

Uh, it would help to know exactly what do you mean by a Sith body. Do you want an armored body?, A body draped in loose robes?, A combination of both?.

There are some other action figure lines compatible with Hasbro's SW  (think of G.I. Joe, the Chap Mei stuff) that might be useful  in customizing a Sith.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Greenstuff

there's different kinds of "greenstuff" or are you reffering to different brands?

The yellow/blue GW ribbons are pretty much generic plumber's putty, with a longish cure time. Other manufacturers use different catalysts to speed up the curing time, enhance strenght, etc. and most often use their own choice of colors to easily identify each type.

It varies depending on the type you bought. Some are good to sand and paint in under an hour, some reach workable hardness after 12 hrs.

Normally the blue/yellow stuff cures completely in about 10-12 hrs, while the blue/white cures in a couple hours. There's also  the red/green variety, which cures faster, in under an hour, but I find it a lot more coarse.

I think I'd try a GW's Enchanted Blue base, mixed with GW's Skull White to match the lightness.

They used to  have a light blue paint, Lightning Blue or somesuch, that might have been an even better match, but the Enchanted Blue should work better than GW's Ultramarine Blue, in my opinion.

Kneaditite is one of the names for the two-component epoxy putties out there. Usually the putty you find at regular hardware stores is older and drier than the one you find at hobby shops, but their formulation is pretty much the same.

Depending on formulation, the curing time varies from 5 minutes to a couple hours, with the maximum hardness reached after 24 hrs.

I normally use the quick setting epoxy to  shape the basic outline of whatever I'm working, and then use the longer curing one to  add in details. I've known modellers that work the exact opposite way, using the quick setting epoxy for detailing, since this way they say there is less risk of destroying by accident what they had already done.

Remember to keep your modelling tools moist when using the green stuff, so it doesn't stick to them.

Cut only a small section at a time, and remember that it is easier to  work in layers than to  try and churn out a complete piece in one go.

Be wary of fingerprints, they can be a pain to remove once it has hardened. I normally use a wet soft paintbrush to smooth the surface.

Most impressive!.

She totally looks like something Hasbro could have offered along the McQuarrie Stormtrooper.

I like it as it is. A few more detailing in the form of stripes or aurebesh numbers could add to it's appearance, but as it is it stands brilliantly.

The front cockpits look a bit naked, but then again, there's not much that can be done with such big transparent surfaces. For some reason, the design looks more like CIS than GAR to me. I wonder how it'd look filled with neimodians and a few spider droids as complement.

Those are most impressive!

What hue of red did you use for the shocktroopers?
All of them are good, but I specially  like your Enchanted Blue clones.

I agree, those lines look great!  The blue looks good too.  Did you mix it yourself?

Actually, I just used Citadel's Ultramarine Blue.

The thing about getting the lines straight is using masking tape (I hear there is also  a masking fluid, but I have not tried it yet) and very thin paint to get a basic outline, and later on fill in the rest of the shapes.

The only tricky part was to  cut very thin, straight rectangles of tape to mask the center line of the torso and the space between the leg stripes, and then place the outer edge masks.

It still required a bit of cleaning and touch up's afterwards, but the nice thing about acryllics is that most of the  clean-up could  be done with just a toothpick.

Thank you all for your comments, and Gregorbian, I'm just awed at what you can do with a microman body.  ;D

Got a Chopper Droid. I actually like the thing, spindly legs and all.

I finally have ONE. Got it off of eBay, and I find it perfect. Now I want more... ;D
