It's unfortunate that a formal policy had to be adopted to discourage any conversation regarding real-life events including life, death, war, politics, & religion.  I guess the people here aren't mature enough to handle a discussion in those areas.  Sad, really.  Oh well, this policy is a small, petty victory for the faint of heart & the meek.  Yay.

It's interesting to note that Sinclair Broadcast Group is/was a huge Bush/Cheney campaign contributor.  They have donated over $120,000 in soft money to the Bush campaign, along with almost $20,000 in hard money.  But according to Sinclair, it's ABC that is making this situation political.

Anyway, here's my final thought on the matter:  if Bush didn't want this war to be politicized, he shouldn't have gotten us involved in Iraq in the first place.  The FACT of the matter is our troops are dying EVERYDAY.  Heck, practically an entire batallion of marines was killed outside of Fallujah in the last two weeks.

Sinclair Stations to Boycott 'Nightline' Tribute
Thu Apr 29, 2004 09:07 PM ET

By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A major television chain, the Sinclair Broadcast Group, will bar its ABC-affiliated stations from airing a planned "Nightline" tribute to fallen U.S. troops in Iraq, saying the program is a political statement disguised as news.

ABC News plans to devote Friday's entire "Nightline" segment to the tribute, with anchor Ted Koppel reading aloud the names of hundreds of fallen American servicemen and women as their photographs are shown.

The network's intentions drew a denunciation from Sinclair, a Baltimore-based owner of 62 television stations in 39 markets reaching roughly 24 percent of U.S. television households.

Sinclair said the "Nightline" segment "appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq."

In a statement posted on its Web site, the broadcast group accused Koppel and his show of seeking to "highlight only one aspect of the war effort and in doing so to influence public opinion against the military action in Iraq."

An ABC News spokeswoman said Sinclair's decision to preempt Friday's "Nightline" on its stations would remove the program in at least seven markets -- St. Louis, Missouri; Columbus, Ohio; Charleston, West Virginia; Pensacola, Florida; Springfield, Massachusetts and Asheville and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Sticking to its plans, ABC News issued its own statement defending the planned broadcast as "an expression of respect which simply seeks to honor those who have laid down their lives for this country."

In an interview with Internet media report Poynteronline, Koppel himself rejected the notion that he was out to make a political point.

"Just look at these people. Look at their names. And look at their ages. Consider what they've done for you. Honor them," Koppel said. "I truly believe that people will take away from this program the reflection of what they bring to it."

Sinclair's boycott drew a sharp rebuke from U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, a New York Democrat and leading congressional critic of newly relaxed media ownership regulations adopted last year by the Federal Communications Commission.

"The decision by Sinclair ... to keep this program off its stations is being made by a corporation with a political agenda without regard to the wants or needs of its viewers," Hinchey said. "This move may be providing a chilling look into the future if we allow media ownership to be consolidated into fewer and fewer hands."

The Washington-based liberal think tank the Center for American Progress cited campaign contribution reports showing Sinclair executives have donated more than $130,000 to President Bush and his political allies since 2000.

The network initially said the 30-minute telecast would be limited acknowledging only the 523 U.S. troops killed in combat since the start of the war in March 3002. But on Thursday, ABC said it would expand the program to 40 minutes to include another 200 or more Americans who died as a result of accidents, friendly fire or suicide.

ABC is a unit of the Walt Disney Co.

What can I say, I love Kill Bill.   ;D

I especially like all the songs by Ennio Morricone.  It's a shame they left "Death Rides A Horse" by Ennio Morricone (the song playing when the Brides slices Sophie's arm) off the first soundtrack.

I"m tellin' you man - she didn't keep mementos.  They were secondary and of no importance.

The only thing she took with her other than her own sword for any sentimental reason would be her daughter.

Other than that anything she took along (like the pussywagon) was for functional use only.  Her motives weren't possession-based, not even a little bit.

I realize that the Bride wasn't possession-oriented, but you have to put a Samurai sword in its proper context.  The Samurai regarded their swords as the "soul" of their warriorship.  The Samurai held their swords in the highest regard, and even named them.  Their swords were spiritual.  So considering that a Hanzo sword was the best type of sword in the world and not just given to anyone, it's interesting to flirt with the idea that, at the very least, the Bride kept Bill's Hanzo sword.  Maybe I'm just crazy.

I watched it last weekend & enjoyed it a lot.  The story was very original & the casting was perfect.  Jim Carrey (Joel) & gorgeous Kate Winslet (Clementine) were convincing in their roles & their relationship seemed believable (good chemistry).  The only negative part about the movie was Frodo.  Anyway, it's fun to ponder the consequences of erasing a person, experience, or memory (pleasant/unpleasant) from the "hard drive" that is the human mind.  If the possibility to escape the past became a reality, would you take the plunge & remove a few unwanted memories or "mistakes?"

Kill Bill Volume 2 was incredible. At first, I thought it wouldn't match up to the first, but ultimately, I liked it much better than Volume 1.  Volume 2 was more character-driven, which was great.  We finally got an in-depth look at Bill's character and a look at Beatrice's background (especially her martial arts training with Pai Mei).  I thought that the fight scene between Elle and Beatrice was awesome & it met my expectations.  I'm curious on whether or not the Bride kept Budd's Hanzo sword or Bill's Hanzo sword, to keep as trophies or keepsakes.

Thanks to Bush, 693 of our soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq &  3,269 US soldiers have been seriously wounded.  The White House confirmed today that as early as November 21, 2001, Bush asked Rummsfeld to draft a battle plan for Iraq.  Bush was eager to invade Iraq from day one.  He has little regard for human life.  I'm voting for regime change.  My vote is going to Kerry.

For fellow children of the 80's, the definitive Cold War nuke TV movie finally has a DVD release, according to DavisDVD.com:

MGM Home Entertainment will at long last release the made-for-TV event The Day After onto DVD on May 18th. This controversial and truly frightening 1983 telefilm follows the events leading up to and following a devastating nuclear attack on the United States by the Soviet Union. The disc is expected to arrive with a 1.78:1 anamorphic transfer of the 126-minute cut, Dolby Digital 2.0 audio and a newly created behind-the-scenes featurette. Not included on this disc, however, is the terrific audio commentary with director Nicholas Meyer that appeared on the Image Entertainment special edition laserdisc. Retail is $27.98.

Gave me the willies.  :)

Me stealy image from DavisDVD:

Yeah, it gave me the willies, too.

I'm definitely going to add it to my collection (come May).

No, Cory, I just find it odd that a guy who. . .

You're right.  I have seen the light.

Cat in the Hat got dicked-over for the Oscars

I'm afraid our sensitive bounty-hunter-lovin' friend, Cory "Siskel" H., has changed his mind yet again.....

"Well, I've officially decided not to get "Cat in the Hat" after all." - Sanford, 3/15/04

He looks so dejected, and cumbersome in public, like someone ran over his wife and his dog in the same day.

I've never heard anyone use the word cumbersome to describe the way someone looked.
