Title: Taxes
Post by: FX-7 on March 4, 2004, 03:14 PM
Just filed my taxes and I'm getting a whopping $650 back!  SD has no income tax!  They collect through property and sales taxes...pretty sweet gig I'd say

We're gonna get a new TV

Did my taxes via TurboTax online on Monday...pretty sweet deal actually, we'll be getting $2700 back Federal and $400 back from MN.  Not sure if that's good or bad, I think I'd rather pay in a little bit rather than get a whopping amount back and do with the money what I should (like invest it)

It comes at a great time though, wifey will be on upaid leave for 6 weeks in a few short weeks :)

I'm getting back $270 from the Feds and $35 from the state.  I would of gotten more if I didn't report my strike pay but I didn't want to get in touble.

Well, Patty and I went to see our accountant last night, and pretty much got royally screwed to the tune of about two grand.   :'(

I wasn't too terribly surprised though, since one of her jobs is a contracting job that she doesn't even pay taxes on during the year.  Oh well.  Guess the new Widescreen TV's gonna have to wait just a little longer!   :-\

I'm expecting a whopping 100$ or so back.  Yippee.

As long as I don't end up owing - I'll be happy.

On our regular State and Federal taxes, we got those handled already.  But I brainfarted on property taxes which were technically due (with a postmark) April 12th.  I actually stamped an envelope here at the office that evening, with our fancy postal machine that prints out the postage in red ink, with the date and all that jazz, just like the Post Office does.  So I may be in the clear, even though we put it out last night which means it didn't get processed through the a real Post Office until this morning.  So I'm anxiously waiting to find out if our stamp here at the office will suffice for the date, of if we're gonna wind up one damned day late, and having to pay $150 in late fees...   :-\

I had to pay in $211, but I get $83 back from Iowa, so it's kind of a wash.

I'd rather pay in so the government can't collect the interest on your money before giving it back.

I've reached a new low in procrastination - I'm just now going to do my taxes tomorrow morning. This is incredibly stupid since I itemize everything. Probably end up getting money back from the state and owe federal, as usual.  ::) Down with the man.

I have a tendency to file my taxes in February if I'm getting money back, and April if I have to pay. :)

This year, not only did I file in February, but I've already received my refunds from both State and Fed taxes.  It's sitting in the bank to be used in this summers construction project:

A Deck/Patio.

I guess I would rather have paid in this year, it would have saved me from a summer's worth of deck-building :P

Of course, I'll probably be singing a different tune when I'm sitting on a lounge chair on my new deck, listening to a Twins game on the radio on a sunny August afternoon with a book in one hand and a "refreshing beverage" in the other ;)

We got our asses kicked again this year, to the tune of about $1,200 on the Federal side.  Probably our fault for not reporting any of Patty's extra contracting income under "self employment".   :P

So how'd everybody else make out this year?  Or are you still procrastinating...?

We used TurboTax for the first time this year.  The TurboTax software made everything go very quickly (started and finished in only a few hours) and it turned out to be pretty hassle free, even the Schedule A Deductions stuff.

After the Best Buy rebates and incentives, the software for Fed and State only cost about $15, so it was a great deal.  Plus, with the software, we got to e-File (for free after another rebate) and ended up getting our tax rebates within 10 business days!

We ended up getting a nice refund from Federal (cha-ching!) and a pretty small one from State (small is better than nothing though).

 :)

As a guy on a freelance contract, it's up to me to set aside and pay all my taxes - and I don't have an employer helping out.  So, despite making  a very small amount this year (by most standards that is...) I have to pay $2,515.00

Of course, I've been setting aside all year - and more or less I have $485.00 that I get to keep - so midnight madness here I come.

When you get a paycheck, they take a certain amount out each week or two weeks or whatever.  In addition to that, your employer pays the same amount towards your taxes.

I'm self-employed.   So no one pays half of my taxes, AND no one witholds any of it for me - so at the end of the year I'm paying.

Its all based on your withholding (The W-4 form you fill out when you get hired).  It makes more sense to not withhold anything and pay all of your taxes in at the end of the year.  This way you get the interest on the money you usually pay in tax.

Many people have said if you had to write a check each year on April 15th instead of having monthly deductions from your checks there would be anarchy.  People have no idea how much you actually are paying in to the governments for tax.  Its mind boggling almost

I've done Turbo Tax online for the second straight year, we're getting around $1000 back from Federal and paying in $500 to the state.  Not too bad, I used to like big refunds until I realized I'd rather have my money now instead of those bastards keeping it for the year.  ALl I know is that MN Taxes suck

and a pretty small one from State (small is better than nothing though).

Agreed.

As I said earlier, we got a "pretty small" rebate from State taxes = $3.00  :P

Well, $3 is better than nothing I guess...

I ended up using Turbo Tax for the first time this year and thought it was easy to use.  My Federal tax return was $340 and my state was $14.

I agree. My old man used to say that in a given year, all the money you make up until May goes to the government, and the rest of the year is yours.

And then, we get sales tax on top of that.  ::)

Rob, please tell me you're filing as an S-Corp. If you're not, we need to talk. Seriously, it was the best thing I ever did in my business organization. I got my ass handed to me year one as a sole proprietor, but for the last four years I've come out way ahead being incorporated.

Woot!

Just finished a "fun" day of receipt reconciling, Quicken updating, and checkbook balacing to prepare for a "fun" evening of tax preparation.  This was our second year with TurboTax e-filing and I will never go back.  It is so much faster and so much smoother to do.

We managed to pull a refund for both Federal and State, so we avoided paying in, but the refund is small meaning that we guessed right on payroll deductions this year and didn't give the government much of a free loan this year.   ;)

Looking forward to adding those two deductions to next year's taxes...   :P

Please tell me more. My aunt does our accounting, but I'm thinking she doesn't know squat about filing as a sole proprietor. All her "self-employment" was "unreported" I think.

Looks like I missed this last year...  Deanpaul, the reason I never incorporated myself (is that the same thing that you're talking about?) is because I never intended to stay freelance - and I didn't, I was hired full time last September.  So this year I've got 8 months worth of freelance taxes to pay - and then I'm done with that shizz.  Next year I'll be getting a big fat refund.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think the tax deduction aspect is really all that helpful, is it?  Diapers cost money, daycare, **** like that.

Still, cool jumper, I like your wife's sense of humor.

Your right, Brent.  Our return was much larger this year than last, but that money was spent on diapers, formula, etc.  Next year should be better though, because in Massachusetts you can claim the cost of day care.

Post by: Morgbug on March 13, 2006, 08:19 PM
Yeah, we can claim daycare here too.  My daughter will be out of it by August though and much as I like the tax deduction, I think I'll like not paying the monthly fee just as much.  Between the car loan and daycare being paid off at the same time, it generates about $800 a month not spoken for.  Guess it's time for a new vehicle ::)

State - haven't gotten it yet but it should be $244 which is cool because I'll use that money for our trip to Panama City Beach in May.  I can't wait!!!!!!!!

This next year ought to be interesting though, haven't had a job now for almost a year...bummer! :(

Well, Patty and I went to see our accountant last night, and pretty much got royally screwed to the tune of about two grand. :'(

I feel the pain.  A couple of years ago, 2002 taxes, I got really screwed for about $3300.  My reserve unit got mobilized and I was drawing military pay.  My school district was still paying me full salary as well.  Sweet deal I'd say.  I know I went way over the usual tax bracket for me being single and getting paid like I was.  But how's that...I serve my country and get screwed paying taxes for it.
