Title: Dune
Post by: Scott on December 22, 2004, 10:02 AM
Anyone read the Dune books?  I'm just about wrapped up with book 3 of the 6 part series

Dune (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441172717/qid=1103725605/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)
Dune Messiah (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441172695/qid=1103725605/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)
Children of Dune (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441104029/qid=1103725605/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)
God Emperor of Dune (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441294677/qid=1103725605/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)
Heretics of Dune (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441328008/qid=1103725605/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)
Chapterhouse Dune (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441102670/qid=1103725605/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-3544989-6722557?v=glance&s=books)

What strikes me about them though is how much of the Original Trilogy is similar in many, many ways.  In fact when Frank Herbert first saw Star Wars, he actually considered suing George Lucas but in the end didn't because of all what Star Wars did for Sci Fi in general.  His biggest beef is that there was work being done on a Dune movie at the same time and it took until 1984 to get it out.  SW is a lot different than Dune and Lucas has admitted to borrowing from many, many sources (Kurosawa, Wizard of Oz, Flash Gorfon etc) but of all of those, the Dune stuff is the stuff that stands out the most and I rarely hear that.

I won't go much further than that if nobody has read any of the books because I want to discuss that further.  If not...Dune is one of the greatest works of Sci Fi on the planet.  Instead of reading the latest EU Star Wars dreck, I suggest you at least give the first book a whirl

My brother was into Dune when we were younger...  I just didn't dig it as much.  I'm not a huge reader unless it's text's for schoolwork.  It's possibly because I'm IN school that I just don't do much reading lately though too...  I've got too much other things to get done, ya know?

May have to check it out when free time's more within my grasp...  Dune looks like a lot to get into though.  Like jumping into reading LOTR. :)

I've read the first one.  The films were ok including the mini series stuff sci-fi has done.  But have not read all the books so I can not judge by just the first one.  :-X

I know the thing about being in school and not being able to read.  I couldn't touch a leisure book for a while even after school was done.

The First Lynch Dune was not as bad as its been panned through the years.  The Sci-Fi Movies Dune and Children of Dune are both actually pretty good with the exception of the semi hokey effects they have

I've never watched the movie...  That actually was what got my brother into the series.  Is it worth a look to entice one to it?

I took, seriously, a Lord of the Rings class this upcoming semester...  I kid you not.  Finally leisure reading with a visual end-result too. :)

Here are the Sci-Fi Channel DVD's, the two Movies cover the first three books.  They are fairly faithful to the books in their story.  The books are a lot deeper than the movie ever will be discussing religion and A.I. and lots of other good stuff.  If you don't want to read lots (and I will say the first book Dune isn't so bad but the the 2nd Book on gets pretty heady and out there) I would recommend buying these (They are like $10 a piece at Best Buy) or renting them.  As I said, except for the effects, they are actually pretty well done movies

I've been re-reading the Fire&Ice books and now that I'm almost finished with Dragons (again), I've decided to go back and re-read the Dune series.

Looking forward to it because I haven't read them in at least ten years (pre-kids).

I've been getting lots of books on CD from the library to help bide the time with the traveling I do, I have ASOIAF right now except for the 1st half of Crows.  I never even thought about getting the Dune books on Audiobook...great idea Jeff!

I could never get past the first one, which I love and have read at least a dozen times. The story just seems more or less complete to me where it ends, kind of like Aliens. Everything after that just seems to be an effort to tear down that happy ending.

You think that's strange? A college near around here offers a degree in Wyrven's Studies.

What do you do with a degree like that?

*bump*

I have been re-reading the Dune novels (read the original so so so many times, but this is only my 4th time through the full set) in anticipation of the new movie this winter.  Can't wait for the full trailer tomorrow...  :)

I can’t say I’m excited about it just based on the cast, but maybe it will be ok. Even the Sy Fy version had a few bright spots.

This.

He's made five stellar movies...I'll watch anything he makes from here on out.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I've read all six of Frank Herbert's Dune books. Ignoring most people saying his son's Dune books aren't good, am I ok moving straight into the two books that finish Frank's second trilogy or do I need to read the Butlerian Jihad trilogy first? I've seen enough spoilers to know that back story is helpful since it was written first.

So Dune was ******* incredible. Easily one of the best movies I have seen in years, it's a true work of art.

My son who read the first book really liked it.  My wife and I, who haven't read the books, felt it was a bit slow.  Not terrible, but slower than it needed to be.

I don't think a Dune movie can be too slow which is why it is so hard to make it into a movie.

I saw it in IMAX last weekend and I highly recommend seeing it in that format if you are able to.  Dennis Villenueve is such a visual storyteller and Dune is arguably his best film to date.

I'm glad there was little to no exposition in this film....I think that was one of the things that killed the 1985 David Lynch film.  Well, that and taking an elaborate hand-to-hand fighting style and turning it into a voice box that shoots bullets.

Finally got to see it tonight. Loved it. 1000 times better than Lynch's version. Gonna be tough to wait two years for the rest.

I didn't find it slow at all. In fact it flew by. Both as far as the time itself but also how quickly they moved story along. I wish it could have been 30 minutes longer to give us a little more of the stuff they cut. I think that opinion may be split down the read the book / didn't read the book lines.

I'm thrilled I bought the four McFarlane figures with the BAF fifth figure too.

No one cared / had an opinion when I asked this but in hopes more people read the books with this movie out I'll say I'm glad I read the prequel Butlerian Jihad trilogy before reading the last two books that finished the second "trilogy". It was nice to have Omnius, Erasmus, etc backstory.
