I know I did a thread on this over at CSW but there is always time to talk about one my all time greatest passions, the Nintendo Entertainment System
I will remember the day in 1985 we got the whole kit and kaboodle forever. Me, my brother and sister were begging for weeks to get one and my parents finally caved. We each got to pick out a game to go along with the pack we got which included Duck Hunt and Gyromite with R.O.B. the lil' Robot. So I got Baseball, my brother got 10 Yard Fight and my sister picked Mario Bros. (non-Super ;)) We must have played for hours on end. I remember my dad missed a meeting he was so enthralled with playing Duck Hunt. It was great because we were also the house in the neighborhood since we were the first family to get a system. Atari was the thing of the past!
The collection really grew from there and was probably a large factor in me getting out of toy collecting. All $$$ went to buying new games... Super Mario Bros, Kung Fu, Pro Wrestling and then some of the greatest games ever! Mike Tyson's Punch Out, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, RC Pro Am, Castlevania...
I think we topped off around 30 games, and I still break the old girl out from time to time. I bought a ton of old games and a new pin connector last winter and she still works like a charm.

Great topic, the original NES was a great system. I actually have my old one hooked up in our spare bedroom as well. A lot of great memories with that system. It might have been the fact that we were kids, but even with all of the graphical advances, etc. of the new systems, I almost think my friends and I had the most "fun" with the old NES. Hours upon hours of Tecmo Bowl, I can tell you that for sure. I still have fun playing that game. Don't get me wrong, the new games are pretty spiffy too, and we never had anything like Rogue Leader on that old system either ;). Anyways, the NES was and still is a great system to just have fun with I think. A lot of great games like the ones you mentioned....I also remember Castlevania, Mega Man, Kid Icarus, Mario, and of course Star Wars.
-
I'd have to say my favorite game for that system was either Ghosts 'N Goblins or Rygar. Awesome video game console! And did that bring back a ton of memories to me. :)
-
Tecmo Bowl and then Super Tecmo Bowl were both totally awesome games.
I hated Ghost and Goblins Chris! I think that is the absolute hardest game I have ever played. I could get to about the third board and then nothing
And...Contra, oh man how many games of Contra did I play?
-
Tecmo Bowl and then Super Tecmo Bowl were both totally awesome games.
Those were also my favorites! So were Double Dribble and that Baseball game.
-
I put together this list last spring at RS and I think it is about how I feel still my top 10
1. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
2. The Legend of Zelda
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
4. Tecmo Super Bowl
5. Metroid
6. Mega Man (all of them :))
7. Kid Icarus
8. Castlevania
9. Baseball Stars
10. Contra
-
And...Contra, oh man how many games of Contra did I play?
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start
I will never forget that
-

wasn't it Select then Start? its been so long, I might be wrong.
I got my NES during the tail run of its lifespan, I got it when Super Mario 3 had just came out. Got my NES w/ SMB3 and Metal Gear. Metal Gear was one of the hardest games ever, I never could figure out what I was to do, it so stunk! :P Some classics have already been mentioned like Mega Man, Contra, Tecmo Bowl, but here's a couple more to add Metroid, RBI Baseball, Excitebike, and Double Dragon. Ahh good times, good times. Alas my NES got sold along with my Genesis, SNES, and Gameboy when I went to college. But thanks to the wonderful world of emulators, life goes on :)
-
Great topic. Yep, I still have one. Some of my favorite games include Burgertime, Elevator Action, Q*Bert, Popeye, and Gradius. I like Punch Out, but I can never get past King Hippo. :-[ Any hints?
-
I have two, actually. One doesn't work anymore, and the other I picked up at a pawn shop for $15, MIB. I about **** when I found it.
I have it hooked up right now while my X-Box isn't. Go figure.
-
I like Punch Out, but I can never get past King Hippo. :-[ Any hints?
When he raises both arms, you hit him in the face and his boxing shorts fall down. Then you just keep throwing body blows at his bandaged area. If you knock him down once, he's finished. :)
I absolutely loved Punch-Out! and Contra, among countless others. :)
-
I used to have one. Some great games with that system.
I had Alien 3, Castlevania, Contra, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Thunderbirds & a bunch more but I can't remember. I sold the NES to get the SNES system which I still have.
Zelda was my favorite. 8)
-
I indeed have an old Nintendo system. It is actually hooked up to my TV at the lake, where I play Mario, Ghosts and Goblins, and Mario 3.
-
I never owned an NES, but I did play some of the rereleased games on the Super Nintendo. :) I know that my aunt has an NES lying around somewhere. Maybe I'll have to look for it the next time I go to her house...
BTW, does anybody else know that Nintendo is rereleasing Mario Brothers 3 for Game Boy Advance this fall? It will be called "Super Mario Brothers 3: Super Mario Advance 4". 8)
-
...Ghosts and Goblins...
Oh, I loved that game! Granted, I could never make it farther than the second or third level. :P
-
And...Contra, oh man how many games of Contra did I play?
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start
I will never forget that
wasn't it Select then Start? its been so long, I might be wrong.
It was Select than Start for 2 player only
-
I remember my spoiled brat of a cousin got one before me and I was pissed. I got one for my birthday, along with Super Mario Bros and Pro Wrestling (Starman was the best, with his flying X chop and flip kick). One day I rented Punch out and me, my brother and my father stayed up until about 3 am to play it. My thumbs were calloused to no end.
I remembering subscribing to Nintendo Power to get all the hints, clues, secrets, etc. and to get the scoop on all the new upcoming games, which was really the only way seeing this was way before the internet's time.
Some of favorite games included all the SMB, Mega Man, Contra, Castlevania, Tecmo Bowl...all the classics. Never was a big fan of Zelda, though.
My sister-in-law stills has her and my wife's from their childhood hooked up at her mom's house and I still play it every once in a while. Goo stuff.

The Game Cube just took a $50 price cut to sell at the amazing price of $99...I may finally cave and buy one...
Mario Kart
Metroid
Super Mario Sunshine
Zelda Windwaker
Rogue Squadron 3
To name a few :-*

Mikey D starts his Chistmas List. #1 item: Gamecube with Roque Squandron III
I knew my patience would pay off. 8)
-
Ahh..Castlevania, the first game I ever conquered!! Is this available on Game Cube?
I haven't played these games in soooo long. I remember burning dinner one night though as I was playing Zelda...that was one of the rare moments my hubby lost his temper. (Ok, so maybe I forgot to pick the kids up from their friends house too but...hell, I was SO CLOSE to the end!!)
-
I remember my parents got my sibiling and me NES for christmas a few years after it was first released. My favorite games were Punch Out, Mario Brothers and a few others that I have forgotten. I lost the use of it a few years after words on christmas when my dog ended it up peeing on it and wreckig it (we decided to leave here in the house for some reason I think bulgars). THe only good thing about it was I then got Super NES.

Thanks for the tip! Of course, now I'm stuck on Bald Bull. Man, I hate it when he does that stupid bull charge move.

Thanks for the tip! Of course, now I'm stuck on Bald Bull. Man, I hate it when he does that stupid bull charge move.
When he charges you have to block his punches (by pushing down on the controller). I think he punches like 5 times or something. After the last punch he throws and you've blocked, punch him in the face. Basically the only time you can knock him out is after his bull charge, so do the above a few times.
-
Scott, do you know when the price drop on GC takes effect? I was at TRU today and they still had it at $150.
-
I thought immediatly...KB and Amazon both have them for $99
-
Yeah I just read the link RS had and it's effect today. Guess TRU is a little slow.
-
Gamecube at KB Toys is $99. Don't know if it's that price anywhere else though.
-
So....
Anyone have Gamecube recommendations?
I plan on eventually picking up:
Mario Sunshine
Zelda Wind Waker
Metroid
Mario Kart
Mario Party
Rogue Squadron II and III
Pikimin
Super Monkey Ball
I have a lot of stuff for PS2 already so I guess I'm looking for GC only games to pick up...
-
I had fun playing Luigi's mansion and Super Smash Brothers. You should also pick up a Wavebird Wireless Controller. They're made by Nintendo and are really great.
But most of those games you listed are Players Choice, which means they're only about $20-$25.
-
Typical bullsh!t "can't have the last post on the page" place-holding post. :-\
-
Alright, here's what I've got for my 'Cube:
- Beach Spikers: Virtua Beach Volleyball (SEGA)
Decent game, I guess. Bought it because it was <$10. - Eternal Darkness
Creepy, atmospheric psychological thriller. Could probably be best compared to Resident Evil, but personally, I like ED much better than RE. Got it for <$20. - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and OoT: Master Quest bonus disc
Good stuff, although rather unnecessary now with the new Zelda Collection disc, unless you're a Zelda nut and have to have Master Quest, which is otherwise unavailable.
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
No-brainer.
- Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Just picked this up the other day for $29.99 at Target. So far, it's basically just a GameCube version of 1999's Mario Golf for the N64, but that was great, and this is shaping up to be great as well.
- Metroid Prime
Another no-brainer.
- Resident Evil
It's just a prettier version of the old-school PlayStation version.
- Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II
Solid.
- Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III: Limited Edition Preview Disc
Bought it only for the 1983 Atari game, which is apparently also on the full version of the game, which I have yet to pick up.
- Super Mario Sunshine
Eh. . . Lost interest early on. Decent game, I guess. Just not the revolutionary experience that we got with Super Mario 64 a few years before.
- Super Monkey Ball
Great, if not frustrating impossible at times. Plenty for the single player to do, but it shines in multiplayer. A lot of fun, and the sequel's supposed to be pretty good, too.
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
Good game, just not my thing. Probably another game where the multiplayer experience is better than the single-player's.
My GameCube want list:
- Mario Kart: Double Dash
- Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
If I've got an extra $20 in my pocket, and find this new for that or less, I'll get it. No rush. - Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
Waiting for either a price drop, or for more details to come in about the "Rogue Squadron Trilogy", which has been rumored to be coming to the XBox sometime next fall, perhaps to coincide with the DVD release.
Another one I've been hearing some good things about is the new Pac Man World 2/Pac-Man Vs. game, which can be found at Target for $19.99. World 2 is your typical, crappy platformer-type game, I believe, but Vs. is supposed to be the highlight here. From what I hear, the multiplayer is really fun and good.
Also heard a lot of positive stuff about Viewtiful Joe.
Now, there are a few games which are available for one or two of the other systems, and personally, in those cases, my buying strategy is this:
XBox<GameCube<PS2
I don't know if that makes any sense or not, but basically, if a game comes out for both the 'Cube and the PS2, for example, I'll go for the 'Cube version (thinking about Bounty Hunter here). Likewise, if a game (thinking of the two Jedi Knight games) comes out for both the XBox and the 'Cube, I'll always take the XBox versions. And obviously, if something comes out for all three systems, I'll take the XBox versions over the other two.
Other recommendations for your 'Cube (if you don't have them already, of course) would be a (wireless) WaveBird controller, which kick the crap out of the regular corded controllers, and the 251 Memory Card, which is plenty big (if you're not putting sports saves on there, anyway).
And if you're feelin' especially crazy, you might even pick up a Game Boy Player for your 'Cube for around $50. It plugs into the bottom of the 'Cube, and will basically allow you to play any Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance game ever made, through your 'Cube, on your big TV.
-
- Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
Waiting for either a price drop, or for more details to come in about the "Rogue Squadron Trilogy", which has been rumored to be coming to the XBox sometime next fall, perhaps to coincide with the DVD release.
Well, I was just checking out another forum, where someone posted Best Buy's ad for next week, and it looks like they're going to have Rebel Strike on sale for $29.99.
Right on time. . . 8)
-
I don't see what the big deal is about a Game Boy player. I could understand if you don't want to buy a GBA SP, or even a regular GBA, but why is it so expensive? I think I may wait and pick one up when they start selling for under $30.
-

Great game. ;D
-
Well, I can go ahead and scratch Rebel Strike off my GameCube want list. Picked it up just now at a Wal-Mart, who price-matched* Best Buy for $29.99.
*Yeah, they price-matched it alright, but not without a hassle. Since the regular price for it at Wal-Mart is $49.99, that's a $20 difference, which apparently is too large a difference for the regular cashiers to do on their own. So she called over a supervisor or something for a manual override, who, when she saw the Best Buy ad, very nearly refused to do it, due to the kind of-semi-not really confusing ad. Rebel Strike is pictured in a box along with two Sonic the Hedgehog games. At the top of the box, above all three games, the print reads "TRIPLE REWARD ZONE POINTS with these 2 SONIC games".
So the supervisor saw that, and thought that Rebel Strike was only $29.99 if you bought the other two Sonic games (which, incidentally, don't even come out until Thursday). I told her no--that Rebel Strike has nothing to do with the Sonic games, and after a few anxious moments, she finally caved, due in part, I'm sure, to the line that was growing behind me.
So, anyway, if any of you are planning to take the Best Buy ad to Wal-Mart to price match, be prepared for maybe a little bit of grief. . .

I just had to bring this topic back up to the top after this past weekend. I sat around for an hour talking with my brother in law (and future brother in law) about how great the original NES was. That system was just so much fun, and between those conversations and what we have been talking about here, it really makes me want to go and see if I can pick up some old games on ebay or something. I still have many of my old ones, but wouldn't mind getting some other greats that you mentioned (my friends had, but I didn't)...Castlevania, Mega Man, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Zelda, etc. Any other games you would recommend for this system? Personally, don't make fun of me, I don't think I have ever played the Legend of Zelda for more than 5 minutes total in my life, and don't remember it well......but it seems to be pretty well liked, so I thought about picking it up. Plus, cheaper to pick up games for the old NES than my Gamecube most of the time :P. Although....on the "new" Nintendo side of things, I got NBA Live 2004 and Rebel Strike for Christmas, so they are both getting all of my gaming time right now...both good games I think.
**Also, quick question, I remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games being fun, I was wondering which you guys thought was the best of them though?**
-
I was just thinking that Nintendo should release a Greatest Hits Disc ala the Midway or Namco versions currently out there...even if its only the SMB or Zelda series...(like the recent Zelda disc for gamecube) I think they'd move a ton more product. Or with each new incarnation of a game include the original NES, SNES or N64 version as a bonus material
Oh and someone should release all of the old Sega NHL games
-
Yeah, my friends and I were just discussing this a few days ago...that is a great idea. They should either release greatest hits discs or include the vintage games along with the newer versions. I think they'd find a lot of buyers if they'd include the old Marios, Zelda, Tecmo Super Bowl, Kid Icarus, Castlevania, Mega Man, Turtles, Double Dribble, etc. Nice idea Scott. :)
-
I'm guessing they would fit half as many games as on say the Namco Disc (which has what 16???)
Even at 4-6 Games (using the Zelda Disc as a model) they could include:
Super Mario Bros:
Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario 64
Racing:
RC Pro Am
Excitebike
Rad Racer
Mario Kart 64
Nintendo Originals:
Metroid
Super Metroid
Kid Icarus
Nintendo Sports:
Ice Hockey
Mario Golf 64
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Super Punch Out
And then there is non-Nintendo Compilations
Tecmo Sports
Tecmo Super Bowl
Tecmo Hockey
Tecmo Baseball
Tecmo Basketball
Castlevanias Konami
Castlevania I
Castlevania II
Castlevania III
Castlevania X
Konami II
Contra
Contra II
Gradius
Rush'n Attack
Top Gun
Metal Gear
Konami Sports
Doubble Dribble
Blades of Steel
Jack Nicklaus Golf (Great Game BTW)
Track and Field
Capcom
Mega Man 1-6
etc...
-
Anybody hear about that Dual Screen Handheld Nintendo is making? Apparently, it's a 2 screened handheld system that will be the competition for Sony's new PSP. Sounds like a bad idea to me, but we'll see how things turn out.
-
Capcom
Mega Man 1-6
Psst. . . (http://cube.ign.com/objects/605/605452.html?ui=gamefinder)
Mega Man Compilation disc, put together in celebration of Mega Man's 15th birthday. Paying tribute to Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, Capcom's Mega Man Anniversary Collection anthology set will collect Mega Man 1 through 8 in a single package in addition to two arcade titles never before released in the U.S., Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man: The Power Fighters. In addition to an updated soundtrack, fans of the blue hero will also find a cache of unlockable bonus features that include 30 minutes of anime (PlayStation 2 version), producer interviews (GameCube version) and a history of the series.
Coming in May. . .
-
Sweet! Sounds like there are new Metroid and possibly new Mario nad Zelda games this year as well, glad I got in now :)
-
Yeah, good stuff.
And it's not for the GameCube, but there is a "new" Metroid game due in a couple weeks for the GBA: "Metroid: Zero Mission".
Basically, it's a remix of the very first Metroid game, but with a bunch of extra stuff thrown in. Should be cool, and it comes out the week of February 9th.
Glad I got that Game Boy Player for the 'Cube. . .
-
Is the original Metroid on the Metroid Prime game at all, I thought I read that somewhere
-
Yeah, it's embedded in there, but to access it you have to beat Metroid Fusion on the GBA, and then do the little GBA-to-GC link deal, and then you can play the original Metroid on the 'Cube.
I haven't done it yet, simply because I got stuck in Fusion and haven't bothered going back to it yet.
In other Nintendo-related news:
Received my first issue of Nintendo Power in years today, thanks to that stupid Zelda disc thing.
::)
Any five-year olds here who want this thing, or should I just throw it in with my sh!tty anime coupons?
-
Oh, and according to the new, sh!tty Nintendo Power, the original Metroid is also included in the new Metroid: Zero Mission game, too, once the new game is completed.
So yeah, several ways to play that old game through your new GBA or 'Cube. . .
-
Metroid: Zero Mission (should have) shipped today from Nintendo--look for it in stores tomorrow or Wednesday if you're interested.
I know Target's got it advertised for $25.xx this week, and Best Buy's got it for $24.xx--the lowest price that I know of so far.
Should be cool--I think IGN gave it a 9/10.
-

Hrmmm...$20 a piece? You can get a real old Nintendo, a new pin connector and these games for probably $50...I might be interested only because I've been thinking about picking up a portable unit for a while...not at those prices though
-
Well, it's not the games themselves I'm that interested in--but the NES-style GBA:SP itself. It looks swell. I've already got a black GBA:SP that I imported from Japan last year, and now I'm trying to justify buying this new one--and of course, I only play my black SP once in a blue moon, anyway.
I'm a sucker.
As for the games, eh. Twenty bucks each? For games that I already have two or three versions of elsewhere? Probably pass on (most of) those. . .
But I like that system. . .
-
My all time favorite Nintendo game is Dusty Diamond's All-Star softball. I play it all the time. I love how each player has certain talent's.
-
Damn, that's swell.
I'll buy the SP, but I'm not sure about the games.
-

To finish this story, I recently broke down and bought a new copy of Deliverance at Target just to avoid the Chipmunk. $14 well spent...carry on with the Nintendo talk now.
-
Yeah, skip the NES carts at $20 a pop! Get one of these and use the NES emulator, and run any dang friggin' game you please:
XG Flash (http://www.gameboy-advance.net/flash_linker/gba_xg-flash.htm)
Not that I would advocate using this for anything other run running legit backups of software that you own...
-
I just saw that pic of the NES Gameboy the other day, pretty cool. I've always thought about getting a portable, but I don't know if I'd get enough use out of it to justify buying one. Nice that they have the old NES games for it, but $20 seems a bit steep. Be nice to see them continue to release some more of the classics. I know I still bust out the old NES to play Tecmo Super Bowl...Elway's leading the Broncos to an undefeated season as we speak :P. For some reason, that game just doesn't get old to me.
-
I found this store here last week in Iowa called Video Games Etc.
Possibly the greatest store on God's green earth, they sell used and new games, and have stuff for any system except Atari 2600 (and its ilk), Neo Geo, and Sega Saturn.
They also sell used DVDs at terrific prices.
Anyway, I picked up Mega Man 2 & 3, Bases Loaded (all 4 seasons), and the 1989 Game Boy Tetris game for $40.
I'm in geek heaven right now. ;D
-

So, I wound up buying one of these systems today--at Wal-Mart, who price-matched Circuit City's (excellent) $89.99 price. I'd also like to thank the brain-dead yay-hoos at Wallyworld for making me 15 minutes late for work, which turned to another forty-five minutes at work on top of that.
"I don't know how to do a price-match!!!" I think Darth Big Boy may have been ringing me out.
An extra-thanks to Circuit City for not having the Classic NES-style GBA:SP in stock in the first place, when it was in their ad, which made me go to Wal-Mart in the first place.
However, I did pick up the new retro Zelda release--got it and a t-shirt for six bucks and change at Circuit, with help from a ten-dollar gift card from purchasing the new Zelda game for GameCube from them, as well.
All told--my Nintendo/Zelda score today:
-Classic NES-style GBA
-New Zelda GameCube game
-New Old Zelda GBA game
-Free Mario Bros. Plumbing T-shirt
$151 after tax
Not bad.
I still have no need for another GBA:SP, considering I barely play the one I already have, but by God, I've got it, and that's the most important thing.
-
I'm thinking hard about picking one up...damn
-
I'm thinking hard about picking one up...damn
Hey, how about picking one up at Circuit City this week? They're all on sale--every color, including the new NES version--for $89.99. Can't beat that.
Ya cheap bastard.
-
So yeah. Went and picked up our Family pictures after work today which just so happened to be next to Curcuit City. Hmmm...walked in, saw the GB and bought it, I caved quicker than Courtney Love on a date. Also picked up Old Zelda and sorta Old Zelda (Link to the Past)
Didn't have Mario or Excitebike the only other two I might want...
Any games I need to pick up? I think I've been told but meh, I'm lazy
-
I picked up Excitebike today, and would have grabbed Zelda and Mario as well but my crappy local Circuit City didn't have any in stock.
-

Hey, nice. I retract my cheap bastard comment. Kind of.
I caved quicker than Courtney Love on a date.
Ho!
(And I mean that in both the Andrew Dice Clay way, and in the "hey, Courtney Love is a whore" way.)
Any games I need to pick up? I think I've been told but meh, I'm lazy
Well, here's all the GBA games that I've got:
Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced
The Legend of Zelda: Classic NES Series
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past / Four Swords
Metroid: Fusion
Metroid: Zero Mission
Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits
Namco Museum
Pac Man Collection
Super Dodge Ball Advance
Super Mario Advance (Super Mario Bros. 2)
Wario Ware, Inc. Mega Microgame$!
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
All of the Nintendo-made games are fantastic, and you can't really go wrong with any of them. I don't think Nintendo has released too many stinkers of their own.
That said, I get the most usage from Namco Museum (Ms. Pac Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Galaxian). It can be had at most places for ten bucks or so--you can't go wrong. The other classic compilations are decent--Pac Man's good, Konami's okay, and Midway. . . well, Midway. . . that was probably a wasted ten-spot.
My short want list for GBA games:
Mario Golf: Advance Tour
Mario Kart: Super Circuit Racing
Mario Vs. Donkey Kong
Super Mario Advance 2 (Super Mario World)
Super Mario Advance 4 (Super Mario Bros. 3)
(And yes, I am a Mario whore. :( )
Other GBA games that get a lot of good word-of-mouth:
Advance Wars
Advance Wars 2
Castlevania (any)
And don't forget, the GBA:SP plays everything under the sun with a Game Boy logo, so you can play classic GB games like this:
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Ages
The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Seasons
And of course--every Game Boy system needs a Tetris game to go along with it, so pick up Tetris DX, first released for the GBC way back in 1998.
I'm done. Enjoy your stuff.
-
By gum I never knew the backwards compatibility, I actually have been playing old school Tetris on The Original Game Boy, pulled the cartridge and plugged it in, Frank Viola...it works!
That's a pretty hefty list of games, might see how much I actually play this stuff first...I haven't been traveling too much for my job lately but I can see hours of plane fun to be had (instead of the Mile High Club)
I see great potential here for rereleased NES games in a portable mode, that's one of the things that sucked me in, I hope they keep the carts coming.
Thanks for the tips :-*
-
My two cents on what to pick up for GBA are as follows:
Both Metriod games
All three Castlevania games
If you a fan of Castlevania games (with the exception of the N64 stinkfest) you'll absolutely love the ones on GBA. I really hope they end up releasing the original Castlevania and Simon's Quest under this classic series. Any word of additional titles in the works?
-
Have had this system for some time and actually get more use out of it then my Gamecube. Now, if they would only release Punchout, The Super Star Wars trilogy and Lifeforce, I would be a happy camper.
Also, for those old time gamers, be sure to pick up the Williams Arcade Collection (Robotron, Defender, Joust and a couple of other games).
Anybody pick up Donkey Kong Classic? I was disappointed, forgetting it was not a conversion of the acutal Arcade game, but the NES version. Still no Pie Factory level. Damn! The Classic NES series games released this week can all be had for $15 with free shipping through Circuit City.
Anybody have anything good to say about Donkey Kong vs Mario. Looking for some feedback before buying.
-
Punch Out was the one I was thinking of along with Metroid and Kid Icarus two of my old tyme favs.
Played a little Zelda last night trying to rack my brain where stuff still was. I was able to find the 1st and 2nd Dungeons but man that was about it...love that game, I can still remember getting the game for Christmas and playing for weeks on end waiting to beat Ganon. When I finally did I jumped and ran around the house...oh what an awesome time that was
I was also remembering me and the neighborhood playing hours upon hours of Pro Wrestling Tournies...another one I'd like to see rereleased somehow
(http://www34.brinkster.com/surlaw/pw/oc.gif)
What I really want to see though is GameCube compilations of old school Nintendo/Super Nintendo games...exactly like the Mega Man disc that is coming out. I like 3D, loved for instance Ocarina of Time, but I also am sad that the 2D side scroller went the way of the dodo :'(
-
Oh, I remember my buddies and I playing many an hour of Pro Wrestling...good game Scott. I believe I remember using a guy by the name of "Starman"? the most often. I've been hoping that Gamecube would come out with NES compilations too. I still have our old NES, and did have it hooked up before we moved, those games are still so much fun to me. I can play Tecmo Super Bowl any time. I've been tempted to get that new NES Gameboy as well, especially if they continue to release classic games. I don't know if I could justify it though, since I don't travel or anything. It is pretty spiffy though, the way it looks.
-
Yeah I've been making new Avatars for myself once the NBA Finals are over (stoopid Colman) Star Man was one I did...anyone can use these BTW

Here is what Famicom is releasing for Series 2
Mario Bros.
Balloon Fight
Clu Clu Land
Wrecking Crew
Twin Bee
Dig Dug
Dr. Mario
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Adventure Island
Gombare Goemon
Not sure if all of these will be released in the States or not
And I just remembered someone saying Metroid is on one of the Metroid games already...that's good enough for me. I still want Punch Out though!
-
Scott, I know those titles have already been released in Japan. Not sure if they are headed our way. Either way, I can live without them. Definitely not the best choices. I would not mind seeing Contra released either.
-
I guess there would be hope for Contra and Castlevania...Twin Bee was known as Stinger on the NES and is one heck of a game...also made by Konami. So maybe they'll keep it going for series 3 and so on. Their choices seem a little weird because I don't remember a lot of those games being that popular even back then
-
Their choices seem a little weird because I don't remember a lot of those games being that popular even back then
Exactly. Especially Dig Dug ??? You can pick that one up on one of the Greatest Hit packs. I also find it strange that with all the different Greatest Hit packs, that Nintendo has not had one of there own ??? Put DK, DKjr, DK3, Punchout, etc on a Nintendo Collection. The Classic series they are releasing now just arent emulated close enough to the arcade version IMO.
-
What I really want to see though is GameCube compilations of old school Nintendo/Super Nintendo games...exactly like the Mega Man disc that is coming out.
Nintendo sucks. I don't think we'll ever see a big-ass compilation disc of Nintendo-brand games. They're gonna milk these old games for all they're worth--e-reader, "Classic NES", and whatever comes next. No need to release a compilation disc when people are more than willing to shell out for Mario or Zelda for the second, third, or fourth time.
I also am sad that the 2D side scroller went the way of the dodo :'(
On the contrary--2-D side-scrollers are still alive and well and living on the Game Boy Advance. All of the old school Mario games have been re-released and have done phenomenally well on the GBA (although the f--kers still haven't produced a true, "new" Mario game yet). The two Metroids have been great (much in the same vein of Super Metroid), and three different, top-down Zelda games have been released on the Game Boy over the years (Link's Awakening, and the Ocarina games). Plus, a new, top-down Zelda game ("The Minish Cap") is set to be released for the GBA this year. And there have been a few all-new, side-scrolling Castlevania games released too, all of which are supposed to be pretty good.
But yeah, side-scrolling games are all but dead on the traditional home consoles. I think a Contra game was released for the PS2 a couple of years ago which was supposed to be a pseudo-side-scroller, and Viewtiful Joe was released last year for the 'Cube, which if I'm not mistaken is a side-scroller, too.
If you want to play the old-school side-scrollers on your GameCube, you could always go out and get a Game Boy Player, which'll let you play all of those GBA games through your 'Cube. . . :)

Mario Bros.
Dig Dug
Dr. Mario
Ah, the memories. Nostalgia seems to be what's in at the moment so I see this new road that Nintendo has taken doing very well. I am hoping for these games to be released in the USA.
-
I recently took out my Nintendo for my PS2. I had all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mario Bros 1-3, Terminator 2 (one of the best games ever) and a bunch more. They're pretty cheap now except for the SWs ones. :-\

I apologize to everyone for post padding. I shant let it happen again.

So back on topic, are those Classic games worth getting? I'm interested in Mario Bros. and Zelda.
Also, if you like old school games, pick up Mario vs. Donkey Kong. It's a REALLY fun game, and it's in 3D (!!!). Yup, 3D, and it looks great, compared to other 3D GBA games. Pick it up if you see it and have the 30 dollars.
-
I have the old Zelda on my Gamecube. It's great fun. I would've purchased it even if they charged for the promo disc.
-
Anyone out there pick up the Gameboy Advance Classic Mario Bros.? If so, does anyone know how to save the game? The instructions tell how to save, but saving only involves high scores. Anyone know how to continue? This is frustrating the piss out of me. I dont want to start over everytime I play.
-

Just scored it at Circuit City for $24.99 with a free GBA:SP carrying case.
Not too bad of a deal--looks like a fun game.
-
Been enjoying the hell out of Metroid:Zero Mission lots and lots of fun...as much fun as I've had in a video game for some time
Isn't the Mega Man thingy supposed to be out now?
-
I caved and picked up Zelda. I'm not too thrilled that there's no aspect ratio control in their emulator, and you're stuck with full screen vertically squished gaming. This is really weird since the GBA actually has on-board hardware to run the GBC and GB games on, so they could have done a straight port on the real hardware, but instead chose to use emulation... weird, weird, weird. There's also some futtzy handling of the 4-way control that seems to stem from the emu. I don't see the value of paying 20.00+ for these, especially when you get down to games like SMB and Ice Climber. Zelda was really pushing it for me. That's just my typical negative opinion, though.
-
Isn't the Mega Man thingy supposed to be out now?
Supposed to be.
I've personally checked with three different stores (Wal-Mart, Target, and Circuit) both yesterday and today, and called Best Buy twice (yesterday and today), and found neither hide nor hair of the new Mega Man game.
Didn't bother asking anyone in person (they wouldn't be able to help me, anyway, since I know more about the stuff than they do), but my guy at Best Buy was able to tell me, at least, that copies were "on order"--not that that means anything, really.
I'll find it, eventually.

Nah--I don't think they're worth it at all. I bought Zelda only because Circuit had it for $14.99 with a free t-shirt, and I had a $10 gift card. Made it, after tax, like $6-something.
Other than that, huh-uh. (And I noticed the wonky compression and handling, too--glad to see it wasn't just me.)
-
Hrmmm...most etailers are saying the Mega Man disc will ship in 2-3 days, I too struck out at TRU and Best Buy today >:(
-
A couple of friends and I are thinking about heading over to a Gamers tonight, just to pick up some old NES games to play. I dug out the NES the other night and got it hooked up, and thought it would be fun (and cheap) to pick up some games that I either never had, or didn't know about, and try them out. I would like to get that new NES-styled GameBoy, but unfortunately can't afford it, and thought this was a cheap alternative for the time being :). Anyways, are there any titles in particular you would recommend looking for? Kind of the "all time greats", or games that are just fun to sit down and play for a little bit with some friends? Thanks for any advice you might have.
-
Hmmm...have a list of what you do have?
Baseball Stars comes to mind right off the bat though
-
Well, honestly, not much....many of my games have been lost (via my younger brother), or borrowed and not returned. What remains is Tecmo Super Bowl, Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, Tecmo NBA Basketball, RBI Baseball, Donkey Kong, and a couple of others I can't remember off hand right now (nothing great). Some games I thought were fun that my friends had but I never did were: Kid Icarus, Mega Man, Metroid, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Pro Wrestling (had, but lost somehow), Zelda, Excitebike, etc. I've also thought about looking for the Empire Strikes Back game (remembered renting that one), as well as Super Dodgeball, which I've heard is a lot of fun.
-
Tecmo Bowl
Punch Out
Mega Man (there's a crap load of them, I like part 4 (I think, the first one with his robo dog friend))
Contra (any Konami game actually and don't forget the code - "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start". I still remember it after all these years.
And of course, you can't go wrong with Super Mario Bros, but I'm sure you have those already - everyone and their brother did.
-
Well for Multi Player I'd go:
Pro Wrestling
Baseball Stars
Super Tecmo Bowl
Ice Hockey (the original Nintendo version)
Contra
Ikari Warriors
RC Pro AM
Gauntlet
RBI Baseball
Super Dodge Ball
For Single Player:
Metroid
Super Mario 1,2 and 3
Kid Icarus
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Legend of Zelda 1 and 2
Mega-Man 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc ;)
Castlevania 1 and 3...2 if you want a whole set
Goonies II
Ninja Gaiden
That should get you going...you may want to pick up a new pin connector off eBay if your NES is not a top loader (most aren't) and you have fits of blinkitis when you fire the old girl up
-
Just noticed Best Buy.com has a 6/24 release date for MegaMan...might it be worth a check today? I'll check tomorrow

I just saw your Megaman PS2 collection sitting in the glass case at the TRU by me, so it's out there.

Picked up the Mega Man compilation (Gamecube) for $29.99 this afternoon at my lovely local Wal-Mart.
I'll never play it, but, I have it, and--again--that's the most important.
-
Yepper just bought it at Target ;D
-
Been playing Mega Man a ton...what a frustrating/fun game. I hate when you get super far on a level only to jump in a pit of doom >:(

SO I've been playing A Link to the Past on my new GameBoy for the last week or two and am absolutely in love with the game. Sort of a 2-D Ocarina of Time (which IMO is the greatest game of all time)
I never had a Super Nintendo, seems like I missed out on a bunch of great games. Isn't the Super Mario game from Super Nintendo out on GB? Any others that would be worth picking up????

You've. . . never. . . played. . . A Link to the Past before? Holy crap. I have a hard time even imagining. Easily my favorite console game of all time.
I never had a Super Nintendo, seems like I missed out on a bunch of great games. Isn't the Super Mario game from Super Nintendo out on GB? Any others that would be worth picking up????
Yeah, Super Mario World was what it was called on SNES, and it's been re-released for the GBA:
Not my favorite of the Mario games, but it is a really solid title. Lots to do, and a lot of fun.
There was also another Mario platformer for the SNES--Yoshi's Island:
It's a little different than the previous Mario platformers--instead of being Mario and rescuing someone, you're Yoshi, with Baby Mario riding along--and I think you have to rescue Baby Luigi or something. Definite twist on the standard Mario games, it was released later in the SNES' life, and is probably one of the best-looking games on the system, graphically. I've got it on GBA (never picked it up for the SNES at the time), and although I haven't finished it yet, it is really good, and definitely recommended.
Having a hard time thinking of some others, though. The SNES smash Donkey Kong Country has been released on the GBA, with DKC 2 on the way, I believe. And I think, too, that the SNES-era Final Fantasy games (II & III) are going to be re-released, GBA-style, too.
And just to play the devil's advocate--for the price of a brand new Mario GBA game, you could probably pick up a used SNES along with SNES's Super Mario World on Ebay. And as cool as A Link to the Past is on the GBA--it's a lot better on the big TV at home. Not to mention--with a SNES, you can play all the other SNES exclusives that haven't been (or won't be) re-released for the GBA--while there's tons, I'm thinking specifically of Super Metroid, which a lot of people still consider to be one of the greatest 2-D console games ever.
-
Yeah never had a Super Nintendo...not sure where I was or what I was doing in that time...I think it was post-NES and pre-Genesis so it was probably Girls and Sportscards and not too much with the video games. Although I remember playing the NES for a long time while in High School, especially Baseball Stars and SUper Tecmo Bowl.
-
Quite possibly the ugliest thing created since the new Batmobile. (http://www.random6.com/nec/)

-
I mean, I think it's cool that someone has the technical know-how to do something like that--God knows I certainly don't--but that thing is just hideous.
It belongs in that American Express "beautiful things" commercial.
Surely, the look of four different systems hooked up to the TV is less-obnoxious than the look of some big, stupid, asymmetrical wooden box hooked up to the TV. . .
-
What...... is........ that thing? ???

It's hideous.

Well, IGN is reporting (http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/537/537917p1.html?fromint=1) that the second wave of Classic NES GBA games (10/25 release) is as follows:
Castlevania
Dr. Mario
The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Metroid
Nintendo has revealed that it will be continuing the Classic NES Series in the US with a second batch of games this October 25th.
In Volume 2 of the series, players will be able to snag perfect NES versions of Dr. Mario, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Castlevania.
Like their predecessors, these games will be $19.99 apiece and feature boxart from the classic versions of the NES release. Dr. Mario, the only two player game in the batch, will feature wireless and wired link play that will only require one copy of the game for two systems.
We'll have more on these games when Nintendo updates us with details.
Some nice titles, but unless there's a nice deal on them somewhere, I'll probably take a pass.
Maybe we'll see a Wave 3 with Punch-Out!, Contra, and Tecmo Bowl. . .

Cool beans, can I say thanks again for informing that I needed a Game Boy, its been the second best thing I take on the road, the other being my Power Glove

Well, it looks like Tecmo Bowl is coming to a handheld console near you, although not a Game Boy system:
JAKKS Pacific Secures TV Games License for Tecmo Bowl
MALIBU, Calif.--Aug. 19, 2004--JAKKS Pacific, Inc. announced today that the Company has signed a worldwide licensing agreement with Tecmo, Inc. to develop and market JAKKS' TV Games products based on Tecmo Bowl and other classic Tecmo properties. The TV Games product is a plug-it-in and play gaming system that contains multiple games in one single controller.
This Tecmo Bowl TV Games unit by JAKKS Pacific will feature games based on classic Tecmo titles, including Tecmo Basketball, Mighty Bombjack, Fire-n-Ice, Solomon's Key and Tecmo Bowl, one of the most well-known retro football gaming titles. All that is needed to play TV Games products are batteries and a TV -- no videogame consoles or gaming cartridges are required. Simply plug the TV Games product into the A/V jacks of any standard television set, turn it on and play! The lightweight, compact, all-inclusive controller houses a combination of videogames with all of the hardware and software built right in. This technology allows gaming fans to enjoy a number of videogames with just one single purchase.
http://www.jakkspacific.com/
Tecmo Bowl is always good, but it looks like this thing will be limited to one player only. I also wonder what the controller will be like--if The Big N will allow them to make something a little like that original NES controller, or if they'll have to come up with something entirely new.
And Jakks is the same company that's developing one of these all-in-one game controller things for the Star Wars games. Due for release next year, there's still no word on what games that one will feature. . .

My friend Virex was telling me that you can beat Mike Tyson on Mike Tyson's Punch Out by giving him a Donkey Punch. Anyone else heard of that before?

Uh... no.
And, looking back at this thread, this HAS to be where they got the costume design for Ep3 Anakin!

Look at it! The hair! The glove! It all fits!
Anyway, lately I've been addicted to "Animal Crossing" for the NGC. I hadn't played it for a year when the family came over on Christmas Eve and I dropped it in because my brother wanted to check it out. Now I find myself turning the day thing on nearly every day to check out the wacky animals in my town... :-[

The Wizard! Now that is one movie that NEEDS to be put on DVD...

I saw this on Joystiq today. It's especially hilarious because I remember wanting tons of stuff from this catalog back when it came out. Enjoy.

Sure, if you'd like.
But FWIW, your link was originally fine. The URL of the original thread changed when I merged the two threads.
I just wanted to make you briefly wonder how the hell you goofed up the link in the first place... ;)

Depending on your worldview, this is either gonna be the coolest thing to ever happen in the world of video games, or the dawn of the Apocalypse:

Ah, I grew up around an old NES, and I loved it before I understood how to actually play it. My older sister bought one with a copy of Super Mario Bros, and she and my brother would play it a lot. I always liked watching Luigi for some reason.
Later on we got Super Mario Bros 3, Dragon Warrior (the original Japanese name is Dragon Quest- a new one came out here not long ago, Dragon Quest VIII), Dragon Warrior II, Dr. Mario, Legacy of the Wizard, and a few other games I remember less about. I know SMB3 was bought as a christmas present, but I think many of the others came from my RPG-loving cousin. My mother and other sister would play them a lot, and somehow they totally amazed me even though half of the game was text I couldn't read well. :)
In more recent years I've gotten my own NES (I believe the old one was given away) and a number of games for it. My favorites are all four Dragon Warrior games, Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby's Adventure (this game actually rivals SMB3 in my book), old (non-super) Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew (I love the level editor, and the game's an even mix of puzzle and action), Yoshi's Cookie, and Castlevania 2. I guess the RPGness wore off on me a bit :)
Before getting a NES again though, I got a SNES- before I knew anything about the internet I would spend hours and hours playing it. Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past... and many, many other games. The SNES is still my favorite system I think. I even got the "Super Scope" bazooka and Yoshi's Safari, and Mario Paint and the mouse for it :)
Second favorite? Probably my Gameboy SP, but that's thanks to the old gameboy games as much as the Advance games. Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, the Pokemon games (yes the Pokemon games, though I don't bother trying to "catch them all," I just play through and try to find the ones I want for my party), Link's Awakening, and remakes of the Dragon Warrior games... and I'm pretty fond of the newer Castlevania games that are sort of half-RPG, the ones like Symphony of the Night for the playstation, and there's a couple of those in the Gameboy Advance.
Another system I have that I'm pretty fond of is the Virtual Boy :) All I really need is a power glove and I'll be set to move into early/mid-'90s video game obscurity land...

I am amused.

I loved the Marty Barrett, Miller Lite Player of the Game thing.
And man, it's good to hear Vin Scully again.
-
I got a kick out of this, from Rebelscum's Wii thread:
Though I am disappointed about one thing... When it was first announced, I got the impression that it would be totally backwards compatible. Namely, that I'd be able to put ANY old cartridge/disc (GameCube, N64, SNES, NES) in there and play it. But that doens't seem to be the case after all. Oh, well... I mean, I'm glad I can put GameCube discs in it, but that wasn't my expectation.
I really like the idea of Nintendo releasing just this big, ugly hunk of plastic, with three different cartridge slots, in addition to the disc tray for GameCube and Wii games. Hell, they could even have all the different controller jacks too, just so the controllers could be "totally backwards compatible," as well.
'Cause that's definitely cooler than just hooking your Wii up to the 'net and being able to download twenty years' worth of Nintendo games, as well as classic games from former competitors like Sega and TurboGrafx.
-
I'm working on an artists rendering of what that system might have looked like.

I didn't think of that. Now I have to go back and completely redo my artists rendering.

Don't Wii on the electric fence.
-
I'm pretty positive I'm going to be getting a Wii instead of the PS3. I had a Gamecube but never opened it and sold it on eBay a year after I bought it...maily because my gaming time has been for **** since the wee ones game along. Now, they will be about to the age where they are going to be playing games and the Wii will fit in with what I think they should be playing
Did I read somewhere that old games would be available via download? If so...this sold me even more
-
I think I'd rather have one of these than either the PS2 or 360. The PS3 is just too expensive, and I already have an X-Box and rarely play it. My NES and SNES see more use, and if I can download games from that era and play them on the Wii, that'd be more incentive to buy it. Depends on which games are available via download, though. I want lots of stuff from Capcom and Konami, not just Nintendo's own brands.
-

Yep. From Nintendo (http://wii.nintendo.com/hardware.html):
"Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets."
I was reading a thing over the weekend from Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6150678.html). They actually tried a few of the virtual console games:
Super Mario Bros. from the NES
Super Mario World from the SNES
Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64
Sonic the Hedgehog from the Sega Genesis
Bonk's Adventure from the TurboGrafix 16.
Not to get all "console fanboy", but more and more I'm thinking the Wii is the right system for me. ;)
-
Japanese game mag Famitsu just published a poll on system anticipation, and lo and behold:
What hardware are you looking forward to most?
Wii - 68.8%
PS3 - 21.0%
360 - 7.2%
NDS - 3.0%

I just bought a used (obviously) SNES and Super Mario All-Stars (contains SMB 1-3) and absolutely love going down memory lane with these games!
The only thing I don't like is the original Super Mario Bros. They redid the graphics and it looks nothing like the original.
Does anyone have recommendations on what games I should pick up?
-
The Star Wars games are must-buys. Tell me when you get them- I'll hook you up with a debug cheat for all three.
Contra III- because blowin' **** up is always fun.
Super Castlevania- because it's Castlevania.
Then there's other stuff like Maximum Carnage, Mega Man X, Super Street Fighter II, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mortal Kombat II, Mario Kart....
-
Then there's other stuff like Maximum Carnage, Mega Man X, Super Street Fighter II, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mortal Kombat II, Mario Kart....
Zelda: A Link to the Past is A MUST! My favorite game of all time...
SNES was a great system and IMO the best one they ever made...
I can't wait to get the Wii and see what that bad boy can do. I'm really don't care about the downloading capability since I have every NES, SNES and Genesis game ever made on my computer. I'm more psyched about the new controls and graphics. I only wish the Gameboy Player was compatible with it so I can get rid of my Gamecube...
-
Does anyone have recommendations on what games I should pick up?
Lot of good ones already mentioned, but here's my list:
If you like platformers/sidescrollers, pick up some of these:
- Super Metroid - One of the best games of this type ever made
- Super Star Wars Trilogy - They're all pretty good, but if you can get only one, get Super Empire
- Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures - Similar to Super Star Wars, but not as good. Still one of the few Indy games out there actually based on the films
- Super Mario World - Toward the end of the SNES' days, they made some carts which contained both SMW and Super Mario All-Stars. In SMW, Luigi was slightly tweaked to look more like Luigi, and there were a few other minor graphics upgrades, as well.
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
- Donkey Kong Country Trilogy - I've only played the first one, and wasn't a huge fan, but these were all pretty popular games, and some of the better looking games released
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Super Castlevania IV
- Earthworm Jim
If you like beat-'em-ups, pick up one of these:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time - Fun game, especially if you liked the Turtles arcade game. Still holds up to this day
- Batman Returns - Nobody ever talks about this game, but I had a blast playing it, back in the day. Great sound and graphics for the time. One of the most under-appreciated SNES games out there.
If you like fighting games, pick up one of the three Street Fighter II games. I've got the last one, Super Street Fighter II, but I think a lot of people also like Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting.
If you like football, pick up one of the Tecmo Super Bowl games.
If you like hockey, pick up NHL '94 or NHL '95.
If you like RPGs, you're in luck, because there were some crazy good RPGs released for the SNES. But you're also out of luck, because many of them are really hard-to-find and expensive, even today. Some of the notables are:
- Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy II
- Final Fantasy III
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Earthbound
If you like good games that I don't feel like doing separate categories for, then try these on for size:
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - my favorite video game of all time, too
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Tetris & Dr. Mario
But, whatever you do, above all else, make sure you grab this one:

As some of you may know, I've been in the process of moving in with my Fiance recently and I one of the things that has happened recent;y is that I found my old Super Nintendo in the back of my closet along with all the games.
When I brought it to the new house, I decided to hook it up to this old tv in the bedroom which we are no longer using since I brought over my tv's and play some of the games.
Super Mario Kart is just as fun as I remember! ;D
-
Now I'm addicted to Dr. Mario. I bought the double feature Tetris/Dr. Mario because I just wanted to play Tetris again but I haven't even tried it yet!
What a fun game - I don't remember playing this when the SN came out...
-
I played Dr Mario on the original NES. It is a fun, addicting game.
-
I don't remember playing this when the SN came out...
Yeah, it debuted on the NES, a year or two after Tetris came out.
Then, a few years after the SNES came out, Nintendo put 'em both on one cart and put it out for that.
-
Packing up my stuff earlier I can across my SNES system. It was stored in a box in the back of the closet for just over 7 years. Kinda looks like this pic I found on the net. :-\

Ye New Nintendo:
Nintendo's Incomparable Wii Console Launches Nov. 19; MSRP $249.99 (http://www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=aT85VZmuLFtGkO9m1HSsJ2PdSlh7Sc0b&page=)
NEW YORK, Sept. 14, 2006 – Nintendo will reshape the home entertainment and video game landscape with the launch of its heralded Wii™ home video game console. The Americas will lead the worldwide launch on Nov. 19. Wii will be sold as an affordable, mass-consumer product at an MSRP of just $249.99. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk™ controller and the groundbreaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc, which anyone can play using simple movements, experienced or not.
Every Wii console includes another distinctive feature: a series of on-screen “channels” that make up the Wii Channel Menu, which makes the console approachable and customizable for everyone, from the most avid gamer to people who have never played before. The Wii Channel Menu is the starting point for all of the console’s functions. The “channels” offer a gateway to a rich variety of entertainment options. When connected to a TV, the Wii Channel Menu offers a simple interface, letting users pick games to play, get news or weather, view and send photos or even create playable caricatures of themselves to use in actual games. Additional functions allow users to redeem Wii Points and download classic games to Wii’s Virtual Console™. The variety of options available through the Wii Channel Menu motivates both gamers and non-gamers to turn on Wii’s power every day.
Wii is creating worldwide excitement with its unique control system, an inventive, first-of-its-kind controller whose position can be detected in a 3-D space. The new controller allows users to pinpoint targets in games or move through the Wii Channel Menu with precision and ease. This intuitive control system will be understood immediately by everyone, regardless of their previous experience with video games. With this one small controller, Wii makes games both easier and more intense than anything previously experienced. For example, in the Wii Sports tennis game, players swing the Wii Remote like a racket to hit the ball, as in real life. They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match.
“Wii reinvents games for the devoted player,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “But more importantly, Wii breaks the wall separating players from non-players by delivering the best game experiences for the most affordable price. We believe the next leap is games for the masses – young and old, gamer or non, alone, with a friend or with the whole family.”
Fils-Aime made his remarks in New York, shortly after Nintendo executives in Japan announced Wii will launch there on Dec. 2.
Between launch day and Dec. 31, Wii owners will enjoy a robust lineup of 30 software titles, with selections for everyone from video game veterans to newcomers. Some top Nintendo launch titles include Wii Sports, a compilation of tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing; The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess; and EXCITE TRUCK™. While publishers are free to set their own prices for games, first-party Nintendo titles will have an MSRP of $49.99. Wii’s self-loading media bay also can play the entire library of more than 530 Nintendo GameCube™ titles from day one.
Third-party developers around the world have lined up to provide unprecedented support for Wii.
“I believe the Wii will attract new and casual gamers to the world of interactive entertainment,” says Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO, Electronic Arts. “It’s a fun, easy and economical system that will become a bridge to gaming for mainstream audiences. At EA, we are putting more support behind the Wii than any Nintendo hardware launch since the Super NES.”
“The Wii is changing audience interaction, opening up whole new experiences that have never been possible in video games,” says Robert Kotick, Chairman and CEO, Activision, Inc. “With the instinctual control of the Wii Remote, Nintendo is advancing the gaming experience to the broadest audience of gamers. Activision is excited about the launch of the Wii and the opportunity it offers. So much so, we plan to have five titles available at launch – our strongest lineup ever for a new console. We have more development resources devoted to the Wii than to any previous Nintendo platform. The Wii is likely to have a profound impact on the size, growth and overall opportunities for the video game market.”
“The Wii control scheme opens up unexplored areas for our talented teams to innovate when creating games,” says Laurent DeToc, President of Ubisoft North America. “It’s invigorating for us. We believe that it will help create a new level of interest in video games and engage more players around the world.”
Additional information about the list of Virtual Console games and the pricing structure will be revealed in the coming weeks. For the latest details, please visit the official website at Wii.com.

players swing the Wii Remote like a racket to hit the ball, as in real life. They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match.
While I think the design and premise of the new controller is cool, I don't understand why someone would buy certain sports games like billiards and tennis.
If you're going to swing your controller around (like a tennis racket), why not just go outside, to a real tennis court, and swing a real racket?
-
Because kids are too lazy to get off their couches. ::)
-
If you're going to swing your controller around (like a tennis racket), why not just go outside, to a real tennis court, and swing a real racket?
Because there's not a real tennis court nearby? Because you don't have the proper equipment? Because you can't afford the proper equipment? Because even if you could, maybe you don't have anyone else to play with? Because you've never played real tennis in your life? Because this game is coming out during the time of year when everything starts getting colder in most of the country, and you don't feel like going outside to play tennis in thirty-degree weather? There's all kinds of reasons.
I'm not trying to argue that Wii Sports will be just as fun as real life sports--obviously it won't be. But the real thing, even for a relatively simple game like tennis, isn't always as easy to coordinate as turning on the TV.
The game's free/included with the system, and I'm under the impression that it's basically like a glorified tech demo to show people how the new controller works and what all they can do with it.

November 19th, I'm so there!

Because sitting or standing in your living room swinging an 8 ounce controller isn't even close to the same thing as running around a tennis court?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but dind't Nintendo release a system with a free tennis game before?
-
but..what if it's raining or the tennis court is iced over?
Well, I guess they're all lazy and they should be running around their living rooms swinging air rackets..getting real exercise then :P?
One of my favorite games was super bomberman..I guess I liked it so much since they didn't have that game in real life :P
-
With that motion sensor remote , they better be making some sort of very very cool lightsaber orientated game, cause I know the possibility of it alone has me grinning stupidly.
This console has so much potential and the price is great too.
I'm so all over this when it comes out
-
I actually came across (and purchased) an very clean, original NES. Of course, no RF adapter, had to order that, but still. $50 got me the system w/ power cord, 2 controllers, and AV cables and a 1 year warantee. I ended up finding SM2, Donkey Kong Classics, and SMB/DH at Pawn America for $5 a pop. I'm actively seeking out T&C Surf Designs and TMNT.
-
Why would you order an RF adapter when you already had the AV cables?
-
He may have an older TV than does not have A/V inputs.
-
Mmm..nope. I have a 42" Sony Grand Wega LCD HDTV with the works. I got the RF switch for when I go to my girlfriends parents place. They're the one's with the old TV's. Besides, if I ever sell it, I'd like to have it complete. I've got a light gun around somewhere, too. I tried it out on my friends 42" HP plasma, and it looks "ok". Of course, his set wasn't calibrated professionally like mine, but I still expect a lot of pixelation.
The worst part is, from what I've gathered, you can't play Duck Hunt on an HDTV.
-
Dude..I got tell you. There's something a little weird about a 27 year old man showing up at his girlfriend's parent's home with his NES ready to roll.
Do you show up on their doorstep carring this?

Her parents are hip, and it's about the only video game exposure I'm sure they've ever had, lol. She and I do a lot of housesitting, as well, and I like keeping my options open. Alison's no novice, but she's not too keen on new age gaming as it is. Gotta keep it simple, and know your roots. ;D

What the **** is with all the interrogation......?

I've been buying some NES stuff lately...man, it's so fun to play the real thing over playing emulators. I found a system at a flea market around a month ago along with an Atari 2600 and some games for $30. Since then I've found a lot of good games at garage sales and flea markets. Right now I'm playing Zelda start to finish...it's amazing how many of the hidden secrets I have retained after all these years. :) Then again it's amazing how many I've forgotten...
I also found a SNES complete with the box for $20 last weekend. I've only picked up a couple of games for my daughter (she loves the old games as much as I do), but I'm itching to pick up Zelda and Metroid for that system. Super Metroid remains an all-time favorite of mine.
John
-
I had another great day at a flea market yesterday. I scored:
A complete N64
Mario Kart for the N64
Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart and Mario All Stars for the SNES
Dr. Mario, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Life Force, Ghosts & Goblins, Ghostbusters, Goonies II, Blades of Steel, Commando, Faxanadu, R.C. Pro Am for the NES
$45 for all of it. I could have picked up a slew of $1-2 games for the NES but elected to hold off. I do regret not picking up NES Metroid for $5 though. Dummy.
Here's a quick pic of my little setup. Not bad for a month's work and for less than $100 on all the systems and games. :)

Wow, your NES still works?
You can only guess what's wrong with mine...
What is the story with the old NES acting up anyway?
-
My original NES still works, and I even fired it up over the weekend to play some Dragon Warrior.
I think the biggest problem the old NES's had was their connector pin. I haven't looked in years, but replacements used to be available on eBay for five or ten bucks each, and they were supposed to have worked marvelously, from what I remember.
-
I see the bottom of your SNES is as discolored as mine. Kinda wierd that that seems to happen to them.
My dad's in town and couldn't wait to play Super Mario Kart! ;D
-
I recently picked up a generic NES platform from a video game store in Minneapolis. These were made this year and play NES games. Yobo I think is the manufacture.
I couldn't believe it when I saw it! Totally stunned. My NES has been busted for a long time. Tetris baby!
-
I see the bottom of your SNES is as discolored as mine. Kinda wierd that that seems to happen to them.
Yeah, I see that a lot on the SNES. I've even controllers that are half-discolored. Kind of odd that it wouldn't be all the way around if it's on one half.
My NES system is touchy. What am I saying...it's a pain in the ass. I usually have the clean the game each time I play it. It drives my daughter crazy that she can't just pop in a game and play it without me having to give it a cleaning first. I'd love to get the more reliable top-loader, but I'm not ready to shell out $80-100 for one.
John

Cheak out the local collector shops for a Yobo top loader. $25 is all it cost me.

I picked up a few connectors a little over a year ago for around $6 a piece. They are really easy to install, all you need is a screwdriver. My only gripe with them is that they are a little tight when you put the games in. On my one, you need a pair of pliers to get the games out. But other than that, the games work GREAT!...
Anyone have a spare power adapter for a Sega Genesis? I have one but the plug is too big for the Genesis itself. If I get that fixed, i'll have a complete Genesis, Super Nintendo and (3) NES's in my collection. Now I just need an Atari 2600...

Wii is rumored to go on preorder at EB/GS Friday.
-
GameStop and EB Games stores will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the Nintendo Wii console on Friday, October 13, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to reach our limit very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at that time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $50 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.
-
Has anyone bought a Wii? Anyone seen one at the stores?
-
Haven't seen one in the stores yet, but it's a moot point as I haven't had the 250 bones to shell out for it. :\ I'm sure a little behind on this, but I just found out yesterday that it plays Gamecube games as well. We sold our Cube a while back and I've been itching to play some of the games, so that was some good news for me.
John
-
I've searched about a half dozen stores and have yet to find one.
-
I got a Wii on the morning they came out. I was 19th in line for 31 units at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, it is a gift for my son so it will remain boxed until christmas :-\

I have not seen a dang one and I look every time I go to Wally or Target
-
Has anyone seen a Wii at a store since the launch?
I have not seen a dang one and I look every time I go to Wally or Target
Twice, and like you I look every time in someplace that sells them. TRU had around a half-dozen a week before Xmas, then around the end of January I saw 2 at Target (one of which was being pulled out of the case at the time).
I'll get one eventually. :)
John
-
I've seen them twice as well, both times at Target. As much as I would have liked to pick one up those times, we just couldn't afford it. Plus, with collecting/DVDs and all that, it might be a tough sell to the Mrs. that I need a $250 game system :). I check pretty much every time I'm out as well, but I've seen them two times - and there was usually a group of people waiting to buy them as well from the way it looked.
-
I still have not come across one. I went hunting last Sunday and missed out at Circuit City. They were supposed to give out vouchers at 9:00 and I went there at 8 to get into line. There were only four people ahead of me, so I figured I would have one. Then a jackass manager comes out at 8:30 and tells us there was a line of people there at 7:30 and he gave them out to that group. If he would have waited until 9 like he was supposed to, I still wouldn't have had one, but I would have seen the line and left. I headed over to the TRU a block away and waited outside to see if they were getting any. No luck there, either. I know I will find one eventually.
-
i went looking once....ended up coming home with a GC instead ;D. cheaper and still good. besides Wii games are to expensive. so far i have 6 GC games and they have all cost less then $30...added together :P and of course anything is better then a crappy PS2 with its disc read error BS.
-
The PS2 hasn't had disk read errors since the launch shipment. It's never been an issue with the slim.
-
i have the launch version. it sucks. and i didnt feel like buying a second one. so $80 for the GC looked really friendly to me.
Edit: mine can still work either way. it just has to be cleaned every three months or so. and i dont have the time to keep doing that as it is really a bi*** to open and clean.
-
Do not freat baout Wii supplies, apparently come April 1st they will be shipping a ton of them. There is a rumor going around that Nintendo held back supplies for 2 reasons: 1 to make it un-mod-able and 2 to post better 1st Quarter 2007 profits... So keep looking! :)
-
I was able to pick up a Wii this morning at TRU. I went there at 8:15 to get into line. I was eighth and they had 21. There were at least 50 people in line by the time they opened the store.

That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life.

Well, I wouldn't go that far... ::)
Did anyone else notice that darn near all of the Sunday circulars had the Wii advertised? That will cause a lot of frustration with consumers looking to find one...

I don't get out much.

Yeah I noticed it as well but the rumor going around is that they are going to be increasing production and availablity...

That rumor has been going around for the last 6 months. All I know is that when I finally get one I'm going to have a lot of $20 games to choose from.

Target must have gotten a motherload of Wii's in because every one I went to today had at least 3-4 on the shelves. Oh, and I bought one :)

everywhere i go now i see a Wii, heck i went to HMV and they had 8 of them :o
-
I saw a bunch at our local Target this past weekend as well. I said to the wife "hey, they have Wii's in stock!", and she said "yep, they sure do", and we kept on walking :). Still wouldn't mind getting one eventually, but hopefully this is at least a sign that they won't be soo difficult for people to get a hold of.
-
I've also ended up getting a Wii after seeing them at multiple Wal-Mart stores. I still need to pick up a game though, and I'd like to get a few Wii Points cards to pick up some older games from the Virtual Console. Too bad I'm trying to save my money at the moment.
-
Harkening back to the "ye olde..." title of this thread, I had a quick question about the original NES. I still like playing ours, but it hasn't been working for a bit now. A lot of people have told me I just need a new connector, possibly like this?
ebay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250194289809&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=260185167768&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget)
Is this what I would need, and if so, does anyone know of a good place to get this? I guess I've been fortunate that I've never had to change anything on our NES, but I'd kind of like to get it running again and bust out those old games. Any suggestions?
-
Have you tried using a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts of the games? I'll do that, and additionally I'll get one of the games nice and lathered with alcohol and slide it in and out of the NES a few times. Helps clean its innards a bit.
Wow, talking about lathering something up with alcohol and sliding it in and out just made me feel really dirty.

Not sure if I ever gave an update here...but I decided to give this to my boys for Christmas. I'm all stocked up and ready to go, I really can't wait to crack this baby open.
-
you've had it sitting around unopened for four months?
-
Anyone get Mario Kart for the Wii yet?
-
We finally got a Wii a couple weeks ago and the sports pack included is pretty darned fun, but I'm just not sure I can shake the traditional gaming experience I've been using since the days of the original Atari. Guess I'll have to rent a "normal" game and see how that floats in my hands. :-\
-
I picked up Mario Kart last night traded in a bunch of old games for Kart and GTA IV.
I HATED Smash Bros after loving it on every other console, so I was a little on edge about Mario Kart, but it's really really good! This is definitely a must have game for the Wii. Sadly it's going to get cast aside around midnight tomorrow.
-
Been playing Mario Kart off and on all day today. I really like it but my 9 year old son owns me.
-
No I haven't I'll be picking it up later this week for sure though. Smash has been dominating my wii experience for the last 2 weeks. If you aren't enjoying it, pop a game cube controller in. Makes all the difference.
Adam
-
I plan on picking it up but have been playing smash bros. I have been using the classic controller and that seems to be working fine.

I love it! did u unlock the the three charaters after you complete subspace? I love collecting the stickers and trophies. I also like the All-Star mode....
-
i am stuck at like 70something percent and cant figure out what i am missing

Thats the problem, it seems like i have completed all the stages but i know i still have more characters to be unlocked like toon link and a few pokemon characters. i am just not sure.

Ok you can not unlock the characters until you complete the "maze" once you do that you have to go back to the swamp, forest, and the runis..once you get to the maze you should have unlocked all but toon link, sonic, and this pink thing...I think Im about at 93% compeltion even though I have completed all stages. You have to find all the secret rooms ( doors) with the trophies..so you can complete the entire game and still not have 100% or even close.
-
Are there any retailers running some kind of promotion on Mario Kart? I'm looking to get a second wheel for free or something along those lines.
-
Hey I have a lot of these old nes games..anyone interested in buying? They might need some cleaning..but all should work..I also have the duck hunt gun...
-
So I'm planning on splurging some cash on the Wii Virtual Console within the next few days. My current WTB list:
NES:
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
SNES/Genesis:
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Sonic the Hedgehog
Any Sonic/DKC sequels
Random:
Internet Channel (to use up the remaining 500 points on the NES dedicated Wii card)
I MIGHT get Legend of Zelda instead of Internet Channel, and I might skip out on the Sonic/DKC sequels for now and pick up Ocarina of Time. Decisions, decisions...
-
I got Kart this weekend and have been playing with it way more than should. Next time I'm on I'll write down my number and we can have a JD race :-*
-
I still need to pick it up just always seem to skip going to gamestop.
As for the virtual console, you have to pick up solomons key. great game. It was the first one i bought with the VC.
-

Agreed. One of these games I always liked but was never good at. :)
I'm waiting impatiently for either of the Castlevania 64 games to be available for download. I've been dying to play then and I no longer have a N64.

i just bought Mario Kart and smash brothers for the wii recently
they are alot of fun
i would reccomend them

I thought it was a case of perfect timing yesterday as we received our stimulus check, and happened to stop at TRU to do some shopping for our daughter's upcoming b-day - and they had plenty of Wiis in stock. Unfortunately, the Mrs. didn't agree with me :P. Hopefully we can pick one up sometime this summer. I think the last "new" video game I purchased was Lego Star Wars II for the Gamecube (a game I still enjoy). For those of you who have picked up a Wii, what do you think of it?
-
I love our Wii, but unfortunately, haven't had a whole lotta time lately to play. I don't have a lot of games, but the non-traditional form of game play really keeps my wife and I playing. We picked up Mario Kart Wii a couple of weeks ago and enjoy racing each other while the baby is asleep. The online feature is really cool in MK. I think my wife wants the Wii Fit game next.
-
We use our Wii a lot. My 8 year uses it all the time. However, its not uncommon for our family of 4 to strap into a little Mario Kart racing action. We are getting Wii-fit this week as well. My wife is very interested in trying out the Yoga stuff. I'm not sure I want my video game system to tell me what my BMI is. :-\
-
The wife and I love it. I'm an avid gamer and most cases if I ask her to play a fps or sport game she'll pass. But with the Wii no problem. We actually have get togethers just to play, so it's definetly a great party console.
-
Apparently the Wii fit is selling out like crazy. My wife tried to get one today and no one had any in stock.
-
I don't understand the Wii Fit craze. If I want to exercise, I'll go out and actually exercise, not do some virtual exercising. ???
-
I wasn't trying to get one or anything, but I noticed that Wii Fit is selling out around here too. I happened to be in both TRU and Target on Wednesday (when it was released), and there were several people asking about it at both stores - and both were told they were sold out in minutes. TRU had enough for preorders only, and at Target they said they got 18 in, and they were sold out by 8:05. Crazy.
-
There are a few things that will be cool about the wiifit though. Tony hawk games for the wii will utilize it according to nintendo. And they have a ski game coming out that uses the board. I may not use it for "excersize" but it will be a nifty little game controller.
-
I've been trying to get Mario Kart: Wii but can't find the damn thing anywhere. I saw a pyramid of them at Best Buy a week ago and now they're all gone.
-
Well, my wife and daughter surprised me with a Wii for my birthday. We never spend that much on b-day presents, and only justified not taking it back because it is something the whole family can enjoy. We spent a little bit of time yesterday playing Wii Sports (the Mrs. actually played it longer than I did, and she hasn't ever shown interest in video games much before). It is definitely not like any video game system I've played before, and is a lot of fun. The question I have now, what game recommendations do you fellow Wii owners have?
-
I don't have a Wii, but I played Super Mario Galaxy for about two hours on Christmas on my brother's console. Couldn't put the damn controller down, it's that addictive.
-
The question I have now, what game recommendations do you fellow Wii owners have?
Congrats on becoming a Wii owner! The only games I can recommend are the few that I've played. The family favorite now is Mario Kart because we can all play at the same time. It's fun and exciting and great when you have people over. The only thing is you'll have to get extra Wii-motes if you don't already have them. We also like Mario Party 8 for the same reasons as MK, but we feel MK is a level better. I've heard good things about Mario Galaxy, but I don't own it or have played it. Have fun!
-
Mario Kart is a great family racing game. The four of us play that all the time.
Mario Party 8 is also a very good multiplayer game. Lots of little interactive games.
Star Wars Lego: the Complete Saga is just hysterical if you haven't played any of the other versions. Likewise, the new Indiana Jones Lego game is a lot of fun.
If you are interested in Sports games, I'd wait until this fall - the new Madden 09 comes out with an all new "all play" interface. For the first time in many years, college football is coming back to Nintendo with NCAA 09 (also featureing "all play").
-
Zelda & Star Wars Lego are a good start
-
i'm totally addicted to the downloadable Wiiware Dr. Mario game. playing against random people from Japan is totally fun. a lot of the virtual console stuff is fun from a nostalgic point of view. but yeah, Mario Kart is great.
-
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Super Smash Brothers: Brawl
- Lego Star Wars
- Madden/NCAA Football (NCAA comes out July 15, Madden in August but you could get a past Madden pretty cheap)
Haven't played Lego Indy yet.
And NONE of the stores around here have Mario Kart OR Wii Fit. It's almost as if they refuse to order more copies. Ridiculous.
-
Has anyone here picked up WiiPlay? I think that is what it is called if I'm remembering correctly anyways. One of the employees at Target recommended it because you get a controller and various games for $50. I was checking some reviews of it this morning, and made it sound like the games aren't anything too spiffy though. Is it better to just buy another Wiimote and a decent game instead of this package deal?
-
Has anyone here picked up WiiPlay?
I did - primarily for the extra controller, but the game gets very very old after a few trys. I did enjoy the cow racing game towards the end though.
-
Has anyone here picked up WiiPlay?
I did as well. The shooting game was fun, pool was good once you get the hang of the control, and the "find Mii!" game is a lot of fun (IMO) especially if you have a lot of identifiable friends/family/random Star Wars characters saved in your Mii's. Fishing, light hockey, ping-pong and whatever else are pretty skippable.
I would totally recommend the package deal.
-
http://gizmodo.com/5021346/lightsaber-ds-stylus-elicits-no-objections-from-p
I'm definitely getting a set of each of these. Not too bad a price. Though I imagine if you wait, they may eventually come down in price. I'm guessing not likely though since these will be more of a collectible than actually used.
-
Has anyone here picked up WiiPlay?
I have as well, again mostly for the controller but also for the duck hunt style disc target shooting game.
-
I plan on picking up some up. I hve a bunch of different stylus pens that cam ewith game preorders.

Look at it more like you're buying a controller and getting WiiPlay for free.
-
I ended up getting WiiPlay (with the extra WiiMote) from my in-laws for my b-day, and we started playing some of the games last night. Not too bad. We had lots of family down over the weekend for our daughter's 1st birthday, and its amazing how much everyone enjoys playing the Wii. The majority of our (adult) family rarely to never plays video games, and all of them kept saying how "addictive" the games were. We only have WiiSports and WiiPlay so far, so I don't know how "real" games play on it, but it sure is a lot of fun so far. I hope to pick up LEGO Star Wars or something like that sometime soon.
-
Lego Star Wars is a must have.
-
So has anyone seen the new Wii Light Sword at Sam's Club yet? You get two light swords for the Wii remote for I believe $25. One in red and in blue. When you turn it on, 22 ultra bright leds "extend the blade" just like the master replicas lightsabers do.
-
So tomorrow i will be goingt o Sam's club.
-
I bought NCAA Football 09 for the Wii today thinking it would be as good as Madden 08 on Wii... I must say it was probably one of the stupidest things I've ever done. The Wii version is horrible. Within an hour I traded it for the PS2 version at GameStop.
-
It sounds like the Wii is now (http://www.newsarama.com/games/080721-WiiNumberOne.html) the #1 selling console in the United States, at least of the "next gen" systems. More info at the linky.
-
My wife went to Sam's Club today. She made no mention of any Wii Sabers. Damn.
-
This is the first time I've found a Wii a Target. Picked it up. It will be replacing my Dreamcast and possibly the ps2 soon. ;D ;D
-
Just a quick question for the Wii owners out there (or anyone else I guess), is Mario Kart a really tough find in your area? We haven't been necessarily looking to buy instantly, but I know my wife sort of wants this game and I've been keeping an eye out to grab it for her birthday next month - just if I happen to find it. It seems to be sold out everywhere here, and I haven't seen one in a long time. Just curious if anyone else was still seeing this problem or not. I know that it was a pretty hot game when released, but I wasn't sure if it was a consistent sell-out nationwide at this point.
-
Yeah its a quick sellout...mornings at Wally or Target seem to be when I see it
I myself have been looking for Wii Fit for like 6 weeks now...no dice :-[
-

Yeah, the Wii Fit seems to be sold out quickly around here too. I saw a sign at our TRU yesterday saying that they would have more this Sunday, but I think they sell out pretty quickly. My father-in-law said he saw one at a WM in their area and was going to pick it up for my wife for her b-day, so we'll see.
-
It took my wife a long time to try and get Wii Fit. It sold out quickly for sure. I got Mario Kart during a midnight release (sucker) so I haven't really gone looking to see if it sells out fast. I can tell you that it is a blast to play so I hope you find it soon!
-
Took me 4 months to find Mario Kart (stumbled upon it with a bunch of Wii Fits and Wii consoles during a mid-day restock 2 weeks ago). Definately one of those games you have to be in the right place at the right time to find because everyone is using the same lame "factory problems = 10 copies sent every other week to random stores in the area" excuse.
-
Finally after weeks and weeks of searching I was able to get a Wii Fit today..whew
-
I picked up Mario Super Sluggers the other day. I *loved* the Superstar Baseball for the Gamecube and figured this would be a good follow-up. Unfortunately, I'm drastically disappointed in it. What I loved about the GC version was the Challenge play - you pick a team, you find new players and most importantly you actually play games. Unless something has completely passed me by, all you do in Super Slugger's challenge play is run around, do short challenges to pick up players, play a 3-inning game against Bowser Jr, then play Bowser for five innings to win the Challenge. Wow. :| Not only were the two ballgames sickingly easy (I beat Jr. 23-0), I can't believe that you don't actually play more traditional baseball games in Challenge mode. The minigames and short challenges don't have a lot of appeal once you've done a couple of them.

So it sounds like Nintendo has the same distribution problems as Hasbro. I've never seen a Wii fit for sale but have seen Mario Kart. This makes me wonder if I should reserve a copy of the Force Unleased.
-

Is Force Unleashed exclusive to the Wii the way that Mario Kart and Wii Fit are?
-
I guess that answers the question. No.
-
This might be older news to some, but I just heard/read this weekend that a new version of Punch Out is coming to the Wii (http://wii.ign.com/articles/915/915916p1.html). Obviously, I'm sure Iron Mike won't be included, but kind of neat to hear that its on the way.
-
I wonder if there will be boxing gloves with the wii remote embedded inside.
-
I suppose they're going to remove all the racial stereotypes in the new one. No more Piston Honda or Great Tiger.
-
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there a website or other source that gives you an idea of which games (and when) are going to get the "Greatest Hit" tag (and $19.99 pricepoint). There are a couple of older Wii games we've been wanting to pick up, but I'm kind of waiting to see if that happens (Marvel: Ultimate Alliance in particular right now). I noticed while looking through TRU.com that LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga must have hit that now as they had it listed for $19.99, two months after we paid $50 for it :). Anyways, just curious if there was a source for that information anywhere.

From Nintendo Player's Choice @ Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player%27s_Choice):
In the United States and Europe, Nintendo introduced the label in 1996 for both the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy, and later applied it to the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance, to distinguish titles that have sold over one million copies. The label is also applied to Nintendo GameCube games that sold more than 250,000 copies.[1] A Player's Choice program has not been implemented for the Wii or Nintendo DS, despite the existence of multiple million-selling games.
Other than that, Cheap Ass Gamer (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/) is a fantastic resource for getting games on the, well, cheap. Their forums (which require a free registration) are fanatical about what sales and deals are going on. I use that site all the time.
Also, Target is running a special Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale on all Wii games this week. Good time to pick some games up.
(In store only.)
-
We use the strategy to take the flyers from where the sales are (like the Target one) to Best Buy. They will always honor their competitors adds and you rarely (if ever) have a hard time getting the games because (1) they stock more and (2) they aren't running the sale on them. We used this add yesterday to pick up a bunch of Christmas gifts at Best Buy.
-
Since the Wii is the number one selling counsel out there, I know alot of people have picked up a Wii for Christmas. I think we should have some good old fashion Jedi Defender Mario Kart races. Anyone up for a race?
-
King and I did a few races tonight. Watch out for Funky Kong, dude takes no prisoners.
-
It was a lot fun Jay! You were working me in a few of those races! I've got Paul and Jay's codes entered. If anyone else would like mines, it's 0516-8051-8504.

Santa brought us a Wii for Christmas but we've only got a couple games so far. Perhaps I should look into getting Mario Kart, I remember it being a lot of fun on the N64. :)

I never had Mario Kart on the N64 - but I LOVED it on the Super Nintendo. Maybe it's age, but I'm just not really into Mario Kart on the Wii. The steering aspect is really cool, but there's just something about it that I don't like.
-
In college, I remember staying up late every night with my roommates playing Super Mario Kart (NBA Jam and Street Fighter too) on SNES. Just a few weekends ago, I hooked up my SNES again and played SMK, and man, what a difference. I thought SMK had great playability back in the day but compared to the latest release, it's come a long way. Obviously the online feature wasn't available, but I think that's a great feature with the current game. It serves as really fun entertainment when family and friends come over. Well worth the $50 or so price tag.
Paul, let me know when you and Fred play next. We'll try to catch you online.
-
I am attempting to get my wife convinced of getting a Wireless Router for us to be able to hook our WII up (no other reason at this time). Do any of you have any suggestions on what works the best, what is the easiest to deal with, and what is the best cost?
-
Any cheap wireless G will work.
-
Thanks King for the MK races last night. We had a blast!
-
Thanks! We had lots of fun too, we'll have to do it again soon.

I think I've unlocked some other karts, but I'll have to play again and see which ones. I really dig the Quacker kart...handles like crazy (almost too good).
On the subject of Ye Olde NES...I'm working on an NES project and could really use some help with some cartridge scans. If anyone can help me, shoot me a PM. Anyone that can help will get a free game or two sent to them for their efforts. :)

Anyone up for MK racing this evening? Clone Wars Animated is a rerun, so I've got some free time prior to BSG :).
-
Got me a Wii for me birthday. Yay me. Just sports right now, but Galaxy, Kart and RB2 will be in the house in fairly short order I'd think. Open for other suggestions.
Oh, and screw you Sony for your lack of easily obtainable backwards compatibility. I had a PS2, wanted to bring those games forward and if you had a console at retail I could buy, I would have chose it over the Wii. Nintendo gets my money now, not you.
-
Even if you had a BC Playstation, it would still be hit and miss.
And a piece of ****.
-

What's BC stand for? Bill Cable?
-
My friend bought Wii Fit the other day (seen a surprising amount of Wii Fits and Wii consoles in stores over the last week) and it was surprisingly fun. Not enough for me to plunk down the $90 they want for it though.

The board is a great accessory for the couple of snowboarding games out there. However, I've got to admit that the wii fit board gets a little insulting when it says ouch when you step on it.
-
I like the board enough and thought it was $90 well spent. Plenty of quarky games and it's great family fun or party fun. It is a little touchy in the "oh" dept when you step on it sometimes and the fact that it asks you if you've seen so and so and if it looks like they've lost weight is a little intruding. I only have the game that came with it, but the skiing/snowboarding games are pretty fun.

Picked one up last month and my wife loves it. She plays the WII Fit every other night.

Let me know when you get Mario Kart. If you have it hooked up to a Wireless Router we can race on line from the comfort of our own homes.

That's true. We need to have another Jedi Defender Mario Kart race. My friend codes are listed a page or two back. If you haven't, please post your friend codes.

I would like to do that. Friday (3/13) work for everyone? What time?
-
I'd like to but I'm heading out of town Friday afternoon for the entire weekend. May be next time?
-
I reluctantly bought Wii Fit a while back but have had a lot of fun with it. My initial thought when it came out was "can't I do this at a gym or with a yoga video?" but this game makes it pretty fun.
BTW, for those of you that like the original NES, I have gone live with my little project. I wanted to wait until I had cartridge scans of every game before I went live with it, but nearly 600 out of 750ish isn't bad for starters. :)

That's an impressive set of NES games. Are they all yours?
-
Nah, I had help with around half of them. I used to have a huge collection of around 400+ games but ended up selling them all once I discovered emulators. After realizing it just wasn't the same I started collecting again and now have maybe 115 games.

I'm hearing that Nintendo released an update today that allows you to store VC games and other things on SD cards. Also the system can support up to 32MB cards. Sounds awesome, can't wait to check it out.
-
I hear Disney Interactive is releasing a version of the new Disney's California Adventure / Disney's Holywood Studios ride Toy Story Midway Mania for the Wii. Basically your playing carnival ring toss, plate breaking, softball throwing and dart games with the Toy Story characters as carnies. Its a great ride and should make a fun game to practice on when not at the parks.

Our family loves the Buzz Lightyear game at DisneyLand and DisneyWorld. I've heard the Midway Mania game is fun too. Looking forward to it if the rumors are true.

Here is the info on the game.

Next week! One of the first games in a long time I'm truly excited about getting :)
-
Have you seen the TV commercial for the new Punch Out? It's really humerous and cool.
-
Punch Out is awesome, it really is. I kept trying to figure out my left elbow was hurting this afternoon and then I started playing again tonight...too much punching :-X
I can't wait to fight Super Macho Man...and then box him later :o
-
I've read that the game is more fun and accurate if you use the traditional controller (not the motion controlled one).
What are your thoughts?
-
I haven't tried it yet...I've gotten the hang of it with the nunchuck and wiimote. Great Tiger continues to kick my sorry ass :-[
-
Sounds like a Nintendo has announced New Super Mario Bros. Wii (http://wii.ign.com/articles/989/989314p1.html), coming holiday time this year. Sounds kind of nifty.
-
So, has anyone picked up (or planning to) the New Super Mario Bros. for Wii game this week? I'm kind of excited to get it eventually, but for now it is going to have to just go on the Christmas list. Looks like fun, and I really enjoy anything that harkens back to the original "ye olde Nintendo".
-
My kids are very excited for it. I think this is one that I could play with them. I remeber years ago leaving my NES in the power on state for an entire month while we played through Super Mario Brothers. We just unhooked the video signal from the TV.
Having said that, we are making the kids wait until Christmas to get it!!
-
Apparently Super Mario Kart was added to the Virtual Console today. With that and the Super Star Wars series on there, I need to buy me some Wii points!
-
I'd like to see the Super Star Wars series released on the DS. All three on one cart.
-
So, has anyone picked up (or planning to) the New Super Mario Bros. for Wii game this week?
I picked up NSMBW at CostCo last weekend ($42). I know it's not as hip or cool as COD4MW2, but there is something very entertaining about simple side-scrolling, Yoshi ridin', fireball throwin', coin collecting action. It's not super hard to play, but it is super fun. I love the multiplayer aspect too, makes a great party game. :)
-
Played Wii for the first time in a while tonight, and it turned out I had a free NES download since they're apparently making the Internet Channel free again (I had downloaded it for 500 Wii Points some time ago). So I used my free download to get the Super Mario Bros. and ended up downloading Super Mario Kart too. I still have some points left over so now I'm trying to pick another SNES out of like 7 that I want. I totally forgot how awesome the Virtual Console is.

No way does Zelda not make anyone's list
Definitely better than Dragon Warrior...the later Dragon Warrior games were certainly better than the first one.
-
In other Nintendo news....Netflix has launched a Wii channel. No need for the disc any more. Yay!
-
Too bad its still at 480p.
-
Too bad its still at 480p.
isn't most of the stuff Netflix streams in 480p anyway? I know some of the more recent TV shows are in "hi-def", but all older movies/tv shows are in 480p.
anyway - it still looks most excellent despite being streamed wirelessly to my plasma TV.
-
Everytime I see nasty little artifacts across my screen when streaming, I smile and think "holy ****...I'm streaming this through my wii, virtually for free."
-
I got Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country Returns for Christmas. Goldeneye kinda sucks, but DKCR is awesome. Remember New Super Mario Bros DS and NSMB Wii? Pretty much the same thing but with Donkey Kong. Highly recommended.
-
Anyone play Wii anymore? Never played a "real" game on this outside of the bowling/sports stuff so I picked up Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy a few weeks ago. Which of those two would be a good start to get reacquainted with the plumber? Last Mario game I played was SMB on the N64 back in the day.

I play Wii all the time, how else you gonna et your Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong Country on?
New Zelda comes out soon.
-
Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite Wii game. Start there.

I play, just not very often due to all the other stuff I've got going on. I've played in the past year or two Star Wars Unleashed, COD games, and SW Lego. As for the Mario games, I can't help you out there.
-
Yeah, I play mine pretty frequently, just finished TFU II a few weeks back. Fun stuff.
I just saw in TRU's Wii ad they have Punch Out! Think I will have to pick that up, even if Tyson is not in it anymore.
Glass Joe FTW!

I was a loyal Nintendo guy from the mid 80's to late 90's, but jumped onto Sony because they had a more mature selection of games so I've been missing my Mario, DK, and Zelda all this time. Hope it's not too hard to get back into these colorful lil kiddie games. :)
Mario Galaxy it is...
-
Nintendo has, easily, the best character selection out there, something Sega, Sony, Microsoft, etc., have never been able to match. I disagree on the "kiddie" idea though. I mean, Mario, sure, but Zelda has broken away from the kiddie crowd though it's still somewhat accessible and Metroid is fairly adult.
-
Preordered the new Zelda last week, mainly for the exclusive Wiimote and soundtrack CD. But I'm hearing it's the best Zelda since Occarina
-
Once Zelda is released I will hook up my Wii again.
-
SMG is doing nothing for me. Guess that means I'm an old fart now. :-[
-
I have always been a fan of Super Mario Kart.

Legend of Zelda:Link to the Past 2!!
This is what Nintendo needs to do more of (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/18/zelda-a-link-to-the-past-2-return-of-a-legend)

Thats awesome!

This isn't exactly Wii-specific, but since that's what we have at our house, I thought I'd post it here. Is anyone anticipating this upcoming Disney Infinity game? I know it isn't a typical "gamer's " game or anything, but our daughter sure has been asking about it a lot. I know it is available on multiple (all?) playforms, and it seems kind of cool in the way you can scan in various characters from across Disney's lines and play them together. I wonder if Marvel or Star Wars could be added down the road? Anyways, just curious if anyone is planning on picking this up or not. I don't know a ton about it, other than the commercials and the fact that it seems to be one of those Skylander's type of buying the figure and putting them into the game type of things.
-
I bought a Super NES today at a price I couldn't pass up. Old school is where it's at! Well, at least that's what I tell the kiddos. Now to hunt down some games.
-
I got a spiffy new 3DS XL in the new sexy black finish at Target last night. On sale for $175, I got an additional 10% by using a coupon good for anything left over from our bridal registry (yes, I put one on there). Paid with gift cards, total cost, $0. :)
-
...good for anything left over from our bridal registry (yes, I put one on there).
Of course you did. You simply misunderstood your fiancée when she said she wanted to play games in the bedroom. (or that's what you tell everyone else) ;)
-
FG, what's a good price on a Super Nintendo? Just curious... Have mine, and considered selling it but never really knew what direction to go.
I got a new TV for my office and got out my Gamecube and plugged it in... Had fun playing Bounty Hunter till it froze... I think the system was too covered and heated up maybe, so I'm going to give that a whirl tonight and see if I fixed it. If not, I may buy a Wii cheap when the new systems launch since I guess they play GC games, which I wasn't aware of.
-
The original Wiis play Gamecube games not the ones at stores right now. That functionality was taken about almost a year ago. Recently I picked up a Gamecube for $10 at Good Will. You might find a replacement there.
-

That is what she meant? Huh. We have just been taking turns playing single-player games.
-
You can get a Chinese knockoff that plays NES and SNES games in the same unit for around $50 or so.
-
I've also seen units that play Genesis, SNES and NES games as well
-
FG, what's a good price on a Super Nintendo? Just curious... Have mine, and considered selling it but never really knew what direction to go.
I've seen "hybrid" units like the ones mentioned in this thread that will play regular NES & SNES games for about $50, give or take. Original SNESs seem to be going anywhere from $50-$75. I bought mine with 4 games & 2 controllers for like $30, which I think is great. Now I'm going nuts trying to find "TMNT: Turtles in Time." I managed to find "NBA Jam" though which is like frickin' crack. I can play it for hours.
-
Well there is the RetroN 3 that will play SNES, NES and Genesis games through the HDMI.
but what I've been waiting for is the RetroN 5. It plays original NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Game Boy Advance, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy Color and Game Boy cartridges. the Famicom and Mega Drive are the Japanese versions of the NES and Genesis.

-
That Retron 5 is amazing! I need one. Did they announce a release date?
-
No release date yet. They just say "real soon now". :-\
-
Seems like mY GC is ok, and it was the disc. Got this GE disc polisher/restorer and it seemed to work like magic. $7 in Wal-Mart, and worth every cent.
-
Talking about Gamecube makes me want to dig our old one out and play some Bounty Hunter as well (or Rebel Strike/Rogue Squadron), always loved those games.
-
Love those retro systems, my main problem with them is that the actual game cartridges are expensive to obtain. I picked up a USB controller a few months back and use that to play my
illegally downloaded emulators on my PC, which is good enough for me.
As for the Wii U, I'll probably snag one once the new Smash Bros. comes out.
-
Cool thing is people are still making games for Atari 2600, Intelivision and Colecovision. Over at www.atariage.com (http://www.atariage.com), they just released a Super Mario Brothers clone for the Atari 2600! It's got all the levels of the original game and is fairly accurate for the 2600. Pac-man 4k was also released. This is a remake of the Atari 2600 version but way more accurate but the same size cartridge. Also don't forget Halo 2600 written by Ed Fryes!

Nintendo announces Wii U price drop, unveils 2DS (http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/28/nintendo-reveals-the-hideous-130-2ds-will-cut-wii-u-price-to-299/)
Eww @ the 2DS
Still not sold on a Wii U... maybe sometime next year. GTA 5 will occupy me for the next year or so.
-
Don't like the form factor but how often do you play 3DS games in 3D? Most of the time I keep it off.
-
The Retron 5 has a release date of December 10th for $99. They've added a few new tricks to the unit. You can now plug in a Sega Power Base converter to play Sega Master System games off the Genesis cartridge port.

REDMOND, Wash., July 14, 2016 – If you see a Nintendo Entertainment System on store shelves this holiday shopping season, you haven’t entered a time machine. (Unless everyone around you is wearing acid-washed jeans and neon leg warmers. If that’s the case, you may have unknowingly walked through a rift in the space-time continuum.) The most likely scenario is you are setting eyes on the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition, launching in stores on Nov. 11 at a suggested retail price of $59.99. That’s right: The NES is back! But this isn’t the same NES that you fondly remember. This new nostalgia-fueled system is a near-identical, mini replica of Nintendo’s original home console and plugs directly into your high-definition TV using an included HDMI cable. The console comes complete with 30 NES games built in, including beloved classics like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, PAC-MAN, and Kirby’s Adventure.
“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”
The system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one NES Classic Controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller. But you really just want to know the full list of 30 games, right? Feast your eyes on the fantastic collection of NES classics included with each and every system:
Balloon Fight™
BUBBLE BOBBLE
Castlevania™
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
Donkey Kong™
Donkey Kong Jr. ™
DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
Dr. Mario™
Excitebike™
FINAL FANTASY®
Galaga™
GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
GRADIUS™
Ice Climber™
Kid Icarus™
Kirby’s Adventure™
Mario Bros. ™
MEGA MAN® 2
Metroid™
NINJA GAIDEN
PAC-MAN™
Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics™
SUPER C™
Super Mario Bros.™
Super Mario Bros. ™ 2
Super Mario Bros. ™ 3
TECMO BOWL
The Legend of Zelda™
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™
There’s a little something for everyone: a nice mix of timeless favorites, cult classics and maybe even some games that you never got around to playing. Each is sure to bring back memories and produce plenty of new ones. You can even enjoy playing several of these games with two players by attaching a second NES Classic Controller, which will be sold separately at a suggested retail price of $9.99. A Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also be used (each sold separately).
When connected to a Wii Remote controller, the NES Classic Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii system. Playing these retro games using a retro controller makes the experience that much more authentic. And if you ever need to step away from the NES Classic Edition in the middle of a tough level (or take a break to call one of Nintendo’s helpful Game Counselors*), don’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress. Each game has multiple suspend points, so you can start where you left off at a later time, no passwords needed.
What’s old is new again with the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. Relive past glories. Finish off that boss you never beat. Save the galaxy and rescue the princess!
*Please only call if you have indeed entered a time machine. The Game Counselor program no longer exists in 2016.

Cool, thought they should have done this years ago when those first few Sega/Atari concepts came out. I'd of liked to have seen more games but beggars/choosers etc plus they'll release more games a few months down the road
-
Yeah, this is something they could have done 5, maybe even 10 years ago. Most people already have these game running on emulators on the PC. Plus, capped at the 30 games? Pretty easy pass, though I'd consider it on sale.
I'm kinda surprised Nintendo isn't making people pay for every game again like they do with their other systems.
-
No Mike Tyson in Punch-Out = Fail.
Or not, I never really cared for that game.

It needs an sd card slot so we can play roms.

Zelda, Mario, Kirby? I'm down.

And apparently the controller cord is only 2.5 feet long.

Tried much of today to get one of these, but struck out at four different stores. Then I tried Amazon (they were put online at 4 CT), but despite it saying it was in stock I got an error the fifty or so times I tried to add it. And now it is out of stock. Yikes. Feels like Hasbro Toy Shop 😀
-
I have no need of one of these. I have a Super RetroTrio that lets me play NES, SNES and Genesis all on one machine. I have Everdrive cartridges for each of them. Everydrive cartridges have SD card slots on them to play roms. I can play every game ever made on these machines with the original controllers. You can get the cartridges at Stone Age Gamer.

What an absolute cluster**** of epic proportions Nintendo pulled on this one...seriously think of how many units they could have sold...what a bunch of idiots
Hopefully i catch the preorder for the Switch at my local Target because it may be 2018 before they come into stock...morons

I stood outside for 2 hours in 3 degree weather last Saturday to get one for my son for Christmas.
It is definitely hard to understand how more of these couldn't have been available.
-
It's just Nintendo's horrific marketing at work.
I read somewhere they only made 1 extra controller for every 5 NES Classics too.
-
What an absolute cluster**** of epic proportions Nintendo pulled on this one...seriously think of how many units they could have sold...what a bunch of idiots
I almost bumped this thread yesterday due to this quote from Reggie at Nintendo in a story at CNET:
Fils-Aime acknowledged the NES Classic shortages. "Every day there's more going into the retail channel. The overall level of demand is certainly greater than we anticipated, that's why we're suffering through the shortages out there in the marketplace."
Hard to gauge demand when they refused to take any preorders on this thing at all.
On the Mini NES, he says, "We saw the NES Classic as an opportunity to engage with millennials, gen-Xers, boomers, people who had played those games back in the day, but life had gone by, and they had somewhat walked away from gaming. It was a great way to re-engage them, and our belief is that by re-engaging them, it creates an opportunity for Super Mario Run, it creates an opportunity for our 3DS business, it creates an opportunity for Nintendo Switch, because all of a sudden they're recognizing what they knew 20 or 25 years ago: they love Mario. They love Zelda. They love all of our classic IP, and they're re-engaging with it right now."
Hard to engage with it unless you've got $200+ to spend on one on eBay, or unless you want to spend hours and hours waiting outside of a store in the middle of the night. . .
-
Instead of re-engaging you've pissed off legions of people and done more ill will to your fans than you could possibly know...morons
Does Reggie have naked pictures of Miyamoto?
-
I picked up a NES Classic Mini a couple weeks before Christmas.I've been searching brickpicker for a second controller every day since. Zero quantity anywhere, ever. I don't understand
-
And the Switch presales start tomorrow at Nintendo's NYC store (no word on when or if they will be up for preorder at Amazon or Gamestop). It should be a nightmare.

I'm so jealous. However, I am also patient and know these will be more available in the near future.

My wife and I decided because we haven't been able to find the NES Classic for Christmas that we will try to get one for ourselves in lieu of Valentine's Day presents this year. So here's to hopping Nintendo finally pulls their head out of their collective asses and will actually get a good number of these into the pipeline.
-
Got in a pre order for each version (colorful and charcoal) of the Nintendo Switch. Figured I'd decide before then which version I want and I'll calcelmthe other.
-
The Switch is out at midnight tonight! I'll be waiting for the hype to die down, but I do have the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild on preorder.
-
It would be sad if the NES Classic outsells the Switch.
-
I believe there have been 12 NES Classics worldwide available so................. ::)
-
I've heard the new Zelda is phenomenal and looks amazing but the debacle of the NES classic has really soured me on the Switch and I'll keep my money...I don't believe anything they've said on the Classic and their complete disregard for lifelong customers feeding a scalper crazed market is beyond sickening
-
Second that. I really wanted a classic but **** this nonsense.
-
NES Classic Discontinued (http://www.polygon.com/2017/4/13/15293030/nes-classic-edition-discontinued)
And these idiots wonder why people pirate their games
-
I can't find the words I want to say
-
I bet they'll just reissue it in a year or two with more/different games on it.
-
A puzzling move to discontinue something that clearly hasn't sold through as it could. I have never seen one in a shelf. I got mine by watching brick seeker religiously, and even then the Taarget employees clearly did not want to sell it to my wife when she went in to get it. These same employees told me they sold through to people lined up on the release day, when I was there the second the store opened, and got back there within a minute after opening.
This was a scalper's wet dream.
-
It's a scalper's wet dream by Nintendo's own design. The purposely didn't make enough in order for it to be the tough to get toy this past holiday season.
Bastards.
-
I have vowed to never buy a Nintendo product again and I never will **** Nintendo

You people act like you just can't pick up an NES on ebay and mod it for better video. You can do that or buy a clone or emulate it. I saw no reason for a mini NES with so many other alternatives. If you have money burning a hole in your wallet, you can buy an Analogue NT mini with full HDMI and play games in 1080p.

Report: SNES Classic Edition is on the way (http://www.polygon.com/2017/4/19/15354912/snes-classic-edition-snes-mini-nintendo)
I am already in line for this at Best Buy. Send food.

Send food.
If you send me the location of the McDonald's closest to you, I'll have them send over some burgers ASAP.

Many casual users don't want--if they even know how--to mess with mods, emulators, ROMs, and any of that other ****. That's a big part of the appeal of the NES Classic. It's a really simple, plug-and-play, (theoretically) inexpensive way to play a bunch of games people remember from growing up. And all that without any of the moral/legal issues that come with emulators and ROMs.
And let's also not forget just how goddamn adorable it is. Nostalgia's a helluva drug.

For $449? You could almost buy two NES Classics on eBay for that!

One of these days I'm gonna take you guys up on all the McDonald's bull**** you give me. I'm gonna post a video of myself eating Quarter Pounder after Quarter Pounder after Quarter Pounder, and by the end it'll be so nasty and disgusting that you guys won't even be able to think about Mickey D's without throwing up in your mouth a little. (Just for a visual reference, I'm picturing the Lard Ass scene from Stand By Me here.)

What Matt said.
I've had this obnoxious argument with my brother when I was trying to find one of these.
"You people act like you just can't pick up an NES on ebay and mod it for better video". This makes me laugh. Just that easy yep. How dare we just want to hand $60 to Target and have easy access to NES games if all we had to do was what you stated? ::)

They're only going to make 12 of them.

They're only going to make 12 of them.
Fortunately, Nintendo has learned their lesson from the NES Classic, and as such will be greatly increasing the production of SNES Classics.
Unfortunately, Nintendo has made the inexplicable business decision to ship all of those units to a single Kmart store located in Laramie, Wyoming.
-

I see no reason to buy this. I already have a real SNES. I'll probably never see it anyway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTTXKbGcsXM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTTXKbGcsXM)
-
Word is that they're making more this round, and that they'll continue to ship from September until the end of the year.
I want one.
I still want an NES Classic too, and quite honestly I'm surprised Nintendo didn't make more of them. The demand is absolutely there for these kinds of sets. They could charge more, throw in more games, and sell tons of them.
-
I managed to get lucky and got an NES Classic off eBay for about $120. My wife and I have played it a ton. However, I never saw them in stores. One store nearby was asking for a $50 up front fee to reserve one when they showed up. Then the store was selling them for $120. Needless to say I balked at that.
As for the Super NES, I'm looking forward to that, but I'm not real thrilled about the game choices. As crazy as it sounds, I was really hoping Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball would have been included. But that was a rather minor game and not a headliner like the stuff that is being included.
-
I'd love a SNES one.
I got a NES by standing outside Target for 2 hours in -3 degree weather last December.
Worth every cent of the $60. My wife, my 5 year old and I have had a lot of fun with it.
-
So there's an article floating around that Nintendo is going to make more NES classic editions. Probably enough to bring the grand total up to 7.
-
I have heard that as well. Sounds like not until next year sometime for the NES Classics though. They also claim to be making more of the SNES orders, but we'll see.
Has anyone here picked up a Switch? I know they are sometimes tough to find as well. We were able to get one opening day, and I have to say we have loved it so far. To be honest, I've always been a Nintendo guy, and haven't really gotten into the other consoles much, even though they are usually superior tech-wise. Love the Nintendo fun-factor though.
I'm pretty sure I've never played a game as much as I've played Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I just love it. My daughter and I have also been having a lot of fun with games like MarioKart, ARMS, and Splatoon 2. Definitely the most action a console has seen in our house a long time.
-
So the SNES Classic came out today. Now that I know there's a sequel to StarFox on it....I need to get one!
-
I got it. I think someone reached into my brain and pulled out the file for "Greatest Video Games Ever" and then made this thing. So awesome. Cords are still too short though.
-
Bought a SNES today. Target by me got in 34. Had about 6 left as of right now.
-
I have been looking everywhere online and offline trying to buy one for retail pricing and have no idea how to find one without taking a day off work and standing around a store.
Any suggestions?
-
Be patient....they are supposed to make more than 3 of these things.

Use Brickseek.com and UPC 045496590758 or DPCI 207-29-7001 to check Walmart and Target stock

I'd read that, but wasn't sure if it was true or not. Good to know though.

Oooh, nice. There's a Target I can get to at lunch, I can just start checking in the morning each day and run down if they have them.
-
I'm still hoping to get one, but haven't seen them so far. I have a buddy who got one opening day, and there was enough that I probably could have got one if I got there early, but I really didn't have the extra money at the time.
On a Nintendo side note, our kiddo and I have really been loving our Switch. I've never put as much time into a game as Zelda (love it), and there have been a number of games (Nintendo based and other publishers), that we've really enjoyed playing. The whole grab and go play switchover works pretty great as well.
-
I finally found an SNES Classic at Target last night. So that's fun.
Have any of you guys bought one and tried adding ROMs to it?
I'm tempted.
-
You know, gang, the news about Nintendo re-releasing the NES Classic to stores tomorrow isn’t gonna post itself
http://mentalfloss.com/article/549439/nes-classic-edition-returning-stores-june-29
-
I'll keep an eye out.
-
Almost every store I went to today had 12-20 of these today, I hope the scalpers (like Troy’s dad) got their balls stuck in the sand
-
Scott,
Were they doing the ticket system to get them or could you just go in and pick them up?
-
Targets just had them in their case and GameStop had them behind the counter
-
I might go out and see if I could pick up one or two today.
If I don’t find the, today, patience will pay off since they are supposed to be making a lot more.
-
Got one at Walmart in the middle of the day yesterday like it was no big deal. They had a few of them locked up and I think I saw a couple more cases that had yet to be stocked.
-
May buy one if I happen upon them. I do want one but Nintendo kinda pissed me off on this.
-
I'm conflicted because I don't necessarily need to spend the money on this, but the fact that the Switch will never have a Virtual Console makes this more desirable
-
Crap, and I’m in the woods for a week. I hope they’re still available when I get back to civilization. I suppose I’ll check amazon first.
-

I wouldn’t worry too much, Rob. They are supposed to finally be making enough to match demand.
-
Thanks Matt, that’s good to know. Looks like they’re $92 on Amazon right now. Are they still $59.99 like before or are they priced more like the SNES Classic was?
-
Still just $59.99 at Target
-
My search ended quickly. My father in law and nephew went into town today and easily picked one up. For once waiting paid off.
-
Patience has once again paid off. I found one today at a Walmart near work.
Now I need to find a second one as a belated birthday gift for my sister.
-
Random post, but anyone else ever play "Earthbound" on the Super Nintendo? I am obsessed. So much fun!
