Title: NCAA Football 2007-2008
Post by: JediMoses on August 9, 2007, 11:13 PM
Practice is underway and I am looking forward to a surprising Notre Dame team.  Sure they will lose a few here and there, but the young talent is going to be fun to watch and develop.

Can't wait until 9/2 for the chance to watch the Irish in glorious HD.  GO IRISH!

Any predictions for the National Championship?

I don't think anything will be surprising about Notre Dame. They've got a weak schedule, and will still go about 6-6. I wouldn't be surprised if they went 0 and 4 before their first win. Anyway...

I'm thinking Alabama will go, at best, 8-4 this year. I'd like to see better, but the SEC is just amazingly tough right now and Nick Saban is working with a team that Mike Shula recruited on school tradition alone. The four loses I'm predicting - LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, and Florida State. I could interchange Florida State with Georgia and Arkansas for Auburn - those are always wildcard games that could go either way no matter what the records are. At worst, I'll allow a 7-5 season.

Florida has got stiff competition coming from LSU, who I'll predict to take the SEC and possibly the National Title against USC.

I finally got my season tickets, a few weeks ago. I'm pumped up!

I know this is a rebuild year for the Gators... they're a hideously young team especially on defense and have a new QB coming in.  With the kick ass recruiting classes they've had, I'm guessing they're back in the championship conversation next season.

After 3 national titles in 1 year's time, it's going to be weird not winning one this year.   :'(

Florida will probably go 8-4 this year.

The season is underway! I loved the smell of football in the air this afternoon...

Some highlights from today:

- Appalachian State ******* DESTROYED Michigan. I laughed because the Big Ten is full of overrated trash-talking pooheads.
- Cal pulled off an upset win (IMO) over Tennesee, who I thought for sure would win.
- Kansas State (who I hate) almost beat Auburn IN Auburn, but luckily that was not the case.
- USC did their usual crap.
- Texas looked mega weak. I know Colt McCoy can do better.
- TCU knocked down Baylor and kicked dirt in their face.
- Oklahoma's rookie QB went 20 for 22 in the first half. Wow. Virex must be happy. I now fear Oklahoma.

... and I attended my first college game as an actual college student!  :D

"Appalachian State ******* DESTROYED Michigan."

Come on now.  That's just not a very smart comment.

Appalachian state won by 2 points, and had to block a 30 yard field goal as time expired to do it.  They hung tough and managed to squeak by what should have been a superior team, but they didn't come anywhere near ******* DESTROYING Michigan.

Yeah, I could have chosen better words, but I really hate the Big Ten.

Sadly it looks like the media is going with the "Michigan screwed up" version of the story rather than the "Appalachian State overcame the odds" version. Yay, more attention for Michigan. ::)

******* destroyed would be...

Georgia Tech 33 Notre Dame 3

Auburn lucked up, last night... because of a roughing-the-kicker penalty, they were able to hold the ball for another 4 minutes. After that, for whatever reason, the KS Coach didn't seem to think it was important to put a guard on his QB - the result was a couple of sacks and the game-ending fumble. Auburn didn't deserve the W, but KS knows they threw that game away.

So, so glad that Tennessee lost.

Bama did pretty good, last night. The atmosphere was great, the crowd was in it.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt...in Vegas the Score was 60-32 with the spread...so that is a Destroy in my book.

Well, we've got #1 USC in town today so I really hope our Huskers can play well.  I don't know how much of a chance we've got, but we'll see.  Go Big Red! :)

Alabama is looking for the upset, today, against Arkansas. Personally, I think our Terry Grant is just as good as McFadden... our defense may allow the Tide a bigger rushing game than Arkansas' future Heisman winner.

Words cannot express how amazing that game was. Easily the best game I've ever witnessed... It was something special, sitting there on the 30 yard line, and seeing that game winning catch with .08 seconds remaining. Wow.

Roll Tide.

Today's games really surprised me, particularly my own TAMU game. Stephen McGee was actually throwing the ball and ended up with 237 passing yards, something I haven't seen done by A&M in my history of keeping up with college football (A&M has a very conservative playbook, usually running options). I was very impressed with the offense, but I think the defense still needs work. They were having trouble holding ULM back, and I worry how they will do against the other Big XII teams (especially since the bigger games are on the road). Hopefully the Ags can get it worked out before Thursday's game against Miami.

I feel bad for Nebraska (who I wanted to win) but good lord, USC is a monster. I think the game would have been closer had Nebraska showed their 4th quarter fire a little earlier. Upsets were definately the theme of the week. I was amazed that Bama was able to pick up the win against Arkansas, Utah pwned UCLA, and Kentucky got the W over Louisville. Texas was almost upset as well. I was also surprised that Michigan beat Notre Dame, but only because I thought both teams would find a way to lose.

So far (and things will DEFINATELY change) it looks like the National Championship could be USC vs. either LSU or Oklahoma but we'll have to wait and see how all the teams do once Conference games begin...

Today's games really surprised me

Same here.  I'm sucking it up in my pick 'em league.  I missed 3 or 4 out of 10 - last season seemed downright easy in comparison.

I was also surprised at the complete ass kicking the Gators laid on Tennessee.  I was pretty sure the Gators would win at home - but to put up 59 on them was awesome.

Next week will be the real chance to see where they are as a team.  Should be interesting.

Roll Tide.

LSU will destroy USC for the title. Think Florida v. Ohio State.

Post by: Brian on September 17, 2007, 10:04 AM
Yeah, even though USC crushed us, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they lost somewhere along the line this season.  Our defense made their running back look like NFL stars, but the holes they had you could have driven a truck through.  It may have been good blocking, but I think some of it was poor D as well.  I mean, they were obviously a more talented team than we are, but I'm not so sure they're the best team in the country either.  Oklahoma sure looks dangerous so far, as well as LSU.

09/01   Ga Tech                       L 33-3
09/08   at #14 Penn State   L 31-10
09/15   at Michigan               L 38-0
09/22   Mich St                        L 31-14

Obviously, 6-6 was far, far too generous. 2-10 is sounding good.

Little late here, but what did everyone think of "Upset Saturday" this past weekend?

Florida loses
Texas loses
Oklahoma loses
West Virginia loses
Rutgers loses
Clemson loses
etc., etc.

Crazy stuff, and the top 10 is very interesting to say the least...

Enh - college football rankings are such a joke.  How is it possible that all these teams were upset, but my undefeated Wisconsin Badgers never move up the ranking?   ::)

Clemson losing should come as no surprise. They had best prepare themselves for November.

Well, no more undefeated teams in NCAAF. Looks like it'll be the Big 12 Champs vs. the SEC Champs for the National Championship. Should be a good game!

Well, no more undefeated teams in NCAAF.

I think Colt Brennan and the rest of the Rainbow Warriors may take issue with that statement.

Not if West Virginia beats Pitt in the Big East championship, and not if the Big 12 Champs are the two-loss Sooners. . .

(For the record, I think OU's in biiiiiiiig trouble against Mizzou.  Hope they prove me wrong, though.)

Picking LSU (yes, even after that 65-yard TD), but rooting for Ohio State.

Outside of Mack Brown, there's not a bigger ******bag in all of college football than Les Miles.

Instead, they self-destructed because of five personal-foul penalties in the game’s first 35 minutes. All five either led directly to an L.S.U. score or ended an Ohio State drive without points.

“You really can’t compare it to anything,” Buckeyes running back Chris Wells said. “To go to a national championship twice and lose. It’s incredible.”

The sequence that best summed up the game for Ohio State came on the first possession of the second half when Ohio State’s Austin Spitler looked as if he was about to block an L.S.U. punt. He inexplicably missed, landing on L.S.U. punter Patrick Fisher after Fisher somehow managed to get away a clean kick. Spitler was then flagged for a personal foul for roughing the kicker, and all the typically unemotional Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel could do was shake his head and mutter in disbelief.

As if on cue, the freshman defensive tackle Cameron Heyward followed that penalty with another 15-yard personal foul. L.S.U. scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Flynn to Early Doucet three plays later to boost its lead to 31-10 and essentially turn the second half into a giant celebration for L.S.U. fans.

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that was probably a very quiet flight home to Ohio....
