Title: Torchwood?
Post by: Phrubruh on November 9, 2006, 10:22 AM
I know Torchwood is a BBC tv show and not on in the states but my friend has been getting copies of the show and I've got  say its pretty cool. There are alot of Doctor Who references and Captain Jack has some great background stories. The show is much like Men in Black combined with the X-Files with some nudity and language. Basically Torchwood collects alien technology and use it to defend the earth again alien attacks. Anyone see this show?

Isn't Torchwood the weapon they've been referring to in the second season of Doctor Who?  Iit has it's own series in the UK?

I'd love to see it if so.  Come on, Sci-Fi, import it!

Torchwood is the spin-off of Dr. Who.  So far, I believe it has been mentioned in every Season 2 episode so far.  Since I'm also in the US, I'm behind what has been shown in the UK.  I believe it has been mentioned in all episodes for Season 2 including the Cybermen episodes.  It would cool if Sci-Fi does pick it up.

There was a Cyberwoman in ep4 last Sunday which was pretty cool to see.  I'm still not sure what the style is supposed to be...sort of an adult Buffy.  It's not as dark or realistic as the x-files or as funny as it thinks it is.  The story arc is shaping up very well and it's nice to get some background on Jack who I hoped would join Dr Who full time but won't be back until Series 3.

It's funny, Paul, I meant to bring Trochwood and Doctor Who up yesterday at lunch and totally forgot.  :P We would have been there another hour boring Jeff and Jay to tears.

OK, was able to check out the first two episodes...
I like the connections to what happened to Captain Jack at end of Doctor Who season 1 and how it has left him with his "condition" that he wants kept secret. I am not 100% sure, but I think the coat he wears in this is the same one he was wearing in 1941 when he first met the Doctor and Rose...
That and I had my suspitions about the severed hand in the jar and after events of episode two I knew I was sure of the connection...Its the Doctor's severed hand from the Christmas episode!!!

For those who else have seen this show, isnt there a tiny bit of the feel of "Angel" to the production?

I love the show myself. My roommate " acquires" every episode so I havent missed one yet. I have taken to calling it " C.S.I.Cardiff". Captain Jack is awesome, but my favorite character is Gwen. Possessed of the greatist blank stare in the history of the BBC.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this weeks episode, it looks extremely creepy. Not that the fairy episode from last week wasn't.

It definately has a Buffy/Angel type of appeal to it.

I've got all eight episodes now if anyone wants it. Great show. It's kind of a cross between the X-files and Men in Black. I don't see why they don't release this show here. All they would have to do is clean up the language a little and reshoot one nude scene so far.

The last 2 episodes aired last night and at last we get to understand what's going on in Jack's head.  He was so happy when the tardis turned up at the end to (presumably) get him into series 3 of Doctor Who at some point.

So why do you think Jack keeps and protects the Doctor's hand so much? Is he waiting to get more parts of the Doctor? Maybe he is going to make a FrankenDoctor?

Just saw episodes "Adam" and "Reset" last night on tivo. Great episodes. "Adam" was a very sad episode. You really feel for Tosh how she just keeps getting beat up emotionally with every relationship she tries to have. It's neat to see Owen getting a taste of his own medicine from Tosh though.

"Reset" was great to see Martha again even though the whole episode was kind of silly with the giant may flys and the chest buster alien moments. I miss the Doctor.

You're kind of right about reset, but the concept of curing anything and everything tends to overshadow the questionable choice in monsters for me.

Wait until the next episode.

Post by: Phrubruh on March 5, 2008, 09:49 AM
I do like the concept of curing anything but at the expense of the aliens. It reminds me of the Doctor Who new Earth hospital with the cat nurses that can cure any disease but a the expense of the people down in the basement.

Besides you can't go wrong with Martha Jones strapped to a table. ;)

I must say I was a bit shocked by the ending of the Reset episode.  I can't wait to see what happens this week.

Just finished the second season. Really good season, but it won't be the same next year.  :(

For those Doctor Who fans, the season premier is supposed to be up on the main site.

Are there 13 episodes in Season 2?  I just watched episode 11 last night.  I am wondering if a rumor I heard is true if people are saying Season 3 is going to be different.

Yes, two more episodes on BBCA -  Fragments and Exit Wounds. Lets just say that Spike (Captain John) is back and things change alot in the last episode.

Aren't we suppost to see more of Martha Jones in the first half of the new Torchwood season? Then she will return to Doctor Who during the late second half of season. In the mean time we have to deal with the awful Catherine Tate for the first half of Doctor Who.  Is David Tennant still taking a year off from Doctor Who to do Shakespeare delaying season five?
Title: Re: Torchwood?
Post by: Rob L on April 8, 2008, 12:25 PM
Catherine Tate was the best thing about the season opener imo and is in all 13 episodes with Martha coming back half way through the run.  DT will be in the 3 specials in 2009 but it's not yet known if he'll be in Series 5 (if there is one).

Edit: also saw the end of Torchwood 2: you're not kidding about S3 being different! Probably won't want to watch it now  ;D

From what I have read, it was always the plan for Doctor Who to take a year off after Season 4.

I've heard that as well. Bummer, but as long as we get something (the 2009 specials,) and it comes back, it's all good.

Catherine Tate just hurts my ears to listen to that shrill voice and whinning. I don't know if you've ever seen her show but its just painful to watch. I'd rather watch Freema Agyeman or Billy Pipper.

Just finished the season finally Exit Wounds. I see what Anthony means by there is room on the team for Martha Jones. Very sad ending and one of the best episodes yet. This season has been consistantly great. I can't wait for season 3. It's going to be an all new ball game. I wonder if we will see Captain John Hart more often?

Thanks for the link...I had only been able to find torrents and I didn't want to have to go that route.  It was a good episode in my opinion.  I am wondering where they are going to go with the show next season.  I wouldn't mind seeing James Marsters as a regular on the show.

So I hear next season Jack won't be on the show. Martha will replace him. The show gets moved to Doctor Who's time slot and is suppost to be more family friendly for that season. This is all because David Tennant will be on hiatus from Doctor Who for a season while he does Shakespeare. Therefore the fifth season of Doctor Who gets delayed a year. I wonder how this will effect Torchwood's ratings?
Title: Re: Torchwood?
Post by: Darth_Anton on May 18, 2008, 09:55 AM
I donno. Martha already has two characters to replace, but replacing Jack? I don't think there can be a Torchwood without Jack. But then again, what do I know? Except for the fact that Jack will show up on Doctor Who again before the season is out.

This has been a long standing rumor, but the Doctor Who hiatus has been planned for some time.  I've read that things like this are typical with UK shows.

But why make Jack disappear? They could tone down the sex and violence without making him disappear.

That's just it...I don't think they will get rid of him...it wouldn't make any sense with the death's of Tosh and Owen.

An interesting note, my wife and I started Doctor who from series 1 and just finished episode three, the Charles Dickens episode that takes place in Cardiff on "the rift." The actress who plays Gweneth, the psychic maid, is Gwen from Torchwood. Connection yet too be made?

This is just like Star Trek reusing actors for different roles. Freema Agyeman played a character in season 2 episode 12 that gets turned into a Cyberman. Then comes season 3 where she returned as Martha Jones. Wouldn't it be great if the two characters are related and she turns out to be somekind of Cyberman spy?
Title: Re: Torchwood?

They are! In the episode introducing Martha Jones she is talking to the doctor and mentions her cousin who died, making reference to the destruction of the tower (that was the front for torchwood tower)

After they killed off Tosh and Owen it was bad enough, but if Jack wont be in Torchwood I really have no desire to watch the show anymore.

Tosh is in Episode 4 season 1 as the same character, but more of a doctor. Very cool.

I know they're re-writing some Who history, but I would like to see an explanation of why Torchwood was unable to locate the Doctor while he was working for UNIT.
Title: Re: Torchwood?
Post by: Straxus on July 5, 2008, 04:27 AM
A very good point, though while he was working with UNIT he would have been under their protection and that probably kept Torchwood at bay (while they waited their opportunity)

Torchwood is back with a five part mini-series for this year. I guess we will finally be losing Captain Jack at the end of the show to make the show more family friendly for next year. I guess not a bad move as long as the stories don't suffer. The story is about Gwen anyway. Maybe Martha will show up? Its starts July 20th on BBC America. I believe it will be shown a little sooner in England. I also hear the Easter Doctor Who special willl be shown around then too on BBC America.

A completely stupid idea to lose Jack...I would disagree that the show is about Gwen, if they ditch Jack it will be since she will be the only original cast member left besides Ianto.  Making it more family friendly will lose its entire audience.  It was never meant to be family friendly.  That is what the Sarah Jane Adventures are for.

Finished day 5. I haven't seen a great deal of British television beyond Dr. Who, Torchwood, Sara Jane and Jeckyll, but damn. This is without a doubt one of the most disturbing television events ever. Both my wife and I wanted to turn away and not watch at least two specific scenes in the last day. You are warned.

It was a good miniseries. The part were Jack has to sacrifice his grandson to save everyone was hard to watch as was the military grabbing the kids. Good show and opens it up to either quitting the show completely or starting all over again.

By the way, I wonder who's job it was to clean up the puke that the 456 keep throwing against the windows? It seemed every time they showed the windows they were clean again. Maybe the puppet kid in the gas mask cleans it up?
