not sure what I can do but ill help out where I can. I changed a bit on my site too. Not sure what else I can add to it at this point, maybe a personal info page for who ever is involved with the project.

Some of my thoughts on the site.

Site Sections - I think we've pretty much covered the needed sections, but I really like DmG's idea of having a section for all the members that are involved so people can see how massive a undertaking this thing really is.  Also maybe adding links to the JD and YAK descussion threads.

CMS vs Standard Setup - Joomla is fairly easy to use, modify, and customized, but I don't know if a CMS type of site is really needed for style of website.  It really depends on how frequent the site is going to updated and how much info is going posted.  Is the site going to be more of a site to showcase our ideas and progress or are we going to use the site to everyone update of the whole project.  I see the JD and Yak forum sections as the main way for project discussion and updates.

Site Design - I like how the main page is set up at the UGP site its very organized and clean.  Each section could be organized similiar to DmG's section to show the customs and other pics.  Maybe have the pics as smaller thumbnails to have the pages smaller and showcase more of the pics.

Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Sections
Post by: PenDragon on December 16, 2006, 04:25 PM
Hey cool! Progress ;D And I've updated the first post to reflect it. I'll update more tomorrow.

SECTIONS:
Seems like we most of us agree that there needs to be the following, general sections:
FIGUREs, VEHICLEs, DIORAMAs, SPONSORs, C4,  & CREDITs (I really like the Credits idea!).

I'd say the only real difference between your sections & mine, DmG, is that each of your sections for customs have the word Concept in them, and I listed Concepts as a separate section.... (well, That and a Contact Us page.)

Seeing as how we don't have the official word on what will & won't be in the UGP world yet, I think we can safely dispense with the word Concept all together. We don't really need a separate section for it, and we can cover both Concepts & 'Official' UGP Figs, Vehicles, & Dios under those 3 customs sections. And I like the idea of thumb-nailed pics too.

As for the Contact Us page: I'm not sure that we need one, but then again, most sites do have them.
We don't really have any phone numbers, or an address, so really, the only thing left would be emails. I'm thinking we can put those in the Credits section tho.... What do you guys think?

JD & the YAK:
Links to Yak & JD boards could go into the Credits or Sponsors section, or they could be added on to the main page somewhere (like a side bar or something). Either way, they should definitely be on the site somewhere. Good Call!

FRAPPER MAP:
The Frapper map seems to be working now - not sure why it wasn't before. But either there was a temporary glitch, or Patreek fixed it  ;D - if you did, thank you, mon ami!

CMSs:
...but I don't know if a CMS type of site is really needed for this style of website.  It really depends on how frequent the site is going to updated and how much info is going posted.  Is the site going to be more of a site to showcase our ideas and progress or are we going to use the site to everyone update of the whole project.  I see the JD and Yak forum sections as the main way for project discussion and updates.
I agree with Phalanxx on this point. While it might open things up to more participation, it feels like JD & the Yak already serve the purpose to me.
How do you non-WebTeam UGP folk feel about this?

DmG:
not sure what I can do but ill help out where I can. I changed a bit on my site too. Not sure what else I can add to it at this point, maybe a personal info page for who ever is involved with the project.
Dude, you're helping just by giving us all a second take on the UGP site!  8)
Question for you tho: I'm not sure I know what you mean by "personal info page for who ever is involved with the project." Do you mean a Credits section kind of page, or like a section of short bios for the members (cuz that'd be pretty cool too)?
Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: DmG on December 17, 2006, 03:30 AM
yeah i was thinking of a small spot for the contributers to the project. Be it a small bio or just a list of what everyone is doing, there should be a small spotlight for everyone involved.
Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: elmeaux on December 20, 2006, 02:40 PM
trying to hit the main points on a break here:

Contact Us could easily be handled by a link on each page. No need to have a page with no content. I do think every site should have some sort of contact info, be it only an email address.

While the map page is up, I don't actually get a map, just the markers. It says image not available. Not sure if it's a site problem because I clicked a link to one of the other folks page and the map showed up there so someone might want to look into that.

The main benefit of the cms would be more timely updates. Obviously this is an issue since we are this far along with no site in part due to everyone's busy schedule. It would give non tech folks the ability to add stuff.

Is "FIGUREs, VEHICLEs, DIORAMAs, SPONSORs, C4,  & CREDIT" the final word on sections? Looks like I'll have a little free time right after Christmas so I might have a go at a design for this thing. Is there an organized source for image files and stuff or are you guys just pulling them off the different threads on this forum?

Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: PenDragon on January 15, 2007, 01:09 PM
OK, guys. Lets help promote this project!

Here's the deal:

I want a yea or nae vote on the use of a content management system from everyone on the team.
If you vote yes, state which one.
Deadline is this Sunday (the 21st) 11:59 pm

I also want a critique on each of the site designs we have so far.
What you like, and what you don't care for.
Same deadline.

I'm waiting on the ever-busy, but ever-courageous Smarty to get back to me on how the pic gathering is going. Once we have content & a desided site look/infrastructure, we'll divide the areas (FIGUREs, VEHICLEs, DIORAMAs, SPONSORs, C4,  & CREDIT) & get 'em done up right.

Come on guys, we've got the quickest job on this project. And if we have a web site up & running, then we can advertise on the front pages of the Yak, JD, and maybe get some real interest drummed up.

I don't see our site as only applicable after the fact. If we want this to be as great as it can be & show folks that there is some life in such an awesome, hobby-spanning, from-the-heart endeavor, then lets get this done & up.

If, I haven't heard input or opinions from Smartypants, Darth Deastron, Elmeaux, Phalanxx, PatreekTheRodian, & DmG on these two subjects by the end of the week, I'll take whatever I recieve, and make a decision next Tuesday evening (the 23rd), based on what ever I have available to me.

E-mail me with your thoughts (even if they mimic Ryans).
I'll open up a couple polls on the Yak regarding this for .

Thanks. And Sound Off Like You Gotta Pair!  ;D
-Tom
(PS - I'll post this @ the Yak & send this out in email too, so don't worry about reading it twice if you run across it again.)

I'll start.   :)

CMS:
I don't think we'll need it.

WHY?:
We don't really have a lot of people on board, and most of them are uber-busy with other aspects of the project anyway. I think we can handle any updates to content that we'll need to make. I don't foresee us needing a blog-ish news-like front page anyway.

And now I gotta go back to work.... more later 8)
Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: PenDragon on January 16, 2007, 07:42 PM
And for that 'more' I mentioned yesterday - or when ever the heck i wrote that:

DmG's Site:
PROs -
1) The transparent larger logo behind the smaller solid one is great! I'm pretty sure elmeaux (the guy who created our cool logo - for those who don't remember) was telling me that I made the banner too large on my try...
2) I also dig the melds you did on the TWO banners - they're both really quite beautiful!
3) Next up are the links at the top. They're simple, to the point, (the other two designs here might be lacking something in that department) and the gray & white combo looks very nice!
4) Nice job remembering the meta tags... I suck at that. Seeing the ***ULTIMATE|GROUP|PROJECT*** on the window, or tab really helps drive it home. As you can see, I totally stole the idea from you. ;)
5) The scroll is DEFINITELY (imho) a needed element!

CONs -
1) The two banners are both really nice, but I just don't like seeing them at the top and bottom. I'd keep it to the top only. If you could set it up so that they could alternate, (or come up randomly - if you wanted to do a few more), that'd be pretty damn cool. Or maybe if the bottom banner was much thiner, it might work better?
2) The scroll works real well for the actual Star Wars-ish intro, but I might leave the "Welcome to ..." paragraph out of the scroll.

OVERALL - You've really driven home the need for well organized sections, for ease of navigation, and for the awesomeness of a scrolling intro to our story. And the look of your site works solidly together. I never really liked yellow & black together, but the grays you added make it turn out nice. Very cool.

elmeaux's Site:
PROs -
1) Cool layout, man. It solidifies the look that my site was (rather unintentionally) leaning near. And it sems like it might be pretty easy to navigate.
2) The pics look great. The transparent lines layer (if that's what it is) over the pics adds some very cool ambiance!
3) Love the cut out logo - very stylish.
4) Aurebesh - 'Nuff said! Did you do out actual translations? Cuz that'd just add 'cool' points - and perhaps be an attraction for the hard core fans (or lovers of detail such as myself)... anywho, I especiall like how you've done the Aurebesh on the pic screens!

CONs -
1) My only real gripe with this mock up is the brushed metal part. Don't get me wrong, I like the texture, especially for the look you were going for. But I think what I don't care for, is the shape of the interface. I might cut away some of the negitive space on the display. Perhaps add some angular (but still rounded off) protrusions too. I hope this is making some sort of sense... it's hard for me to explain w/o a visual aid...
2) The interface needs to be showing some screw heads to really bring it all home. Really give it that lived-in Star Wars look.

OVERALL - Nice job recreating a user interface! It works very solidly, but it just seems a bit too ... I dunno, static(?), for my tastes - then again, I like shiny things. If you could post some notes on how each part of the site works (are the links at the top right side the only means of navigation? do the buttons between the 2 smaller pics do anything, or are they there for looks? etc, etc...), I think I'd be able to give you a more in-deth crit.

Pen's Site:
For the most part, I'll let you guys tackle this one.

PROs -
1) I like the brighter colors. I think they attract attention, and make the site more visually accessable.

CONs -
1) I've GOT to figure out a way to do up the starwars-y intro in a scroll, and I'm not sure that the page aloows for it...

OVERALL - Um, I dig it? Yeeeeaaaahhhhh, I'm no good at he self crit.... ;D

Pen, is it just my browser or are none of the links clickable yet?
I've looked at it in IE, Firefox and Netscape.

Elmeaux's design is very nice. I like the "another world" look of it with the text he used.
I think, if its doable, when you roll your mouse over the text should change to basic (english)

I think the current site is too "earth"  looking.

You should run with his idea.   Also let each of the buttons he has in the top right represent the ones you have : Home, Concept, Denizens, Vehicles...etc.

ALso, try to make the site look like something that would come up on a navigation screen. Maybe a star system map , make up some info on how many parsecs it is from where you are...etc.
Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: PenDragon on January 16, 2007, 11:28 PM
Yeah, DmG's site is the only one with working links so far - nobody wanted to do up a full site before we finalized a few things.

And thank you for the comments on the sites! It's greatly appreciated. We hit kinda of a speed bump there, but I'd like to think that if we get some advertising (in the form of having this site live & covered on the main Star Wars sites that care about customizing), we can bring this back in line!  8) Damn it!

Some of my thoughts.

CMS - My vote would be No for needing a CMS.  To me, the website is more about showing off and getting the word out about the UGP.  The boards at JD and YAK are really where all the discussion and behind the scenes action is taking place.  Any updates to the board would be more or less adding content to the different sections.  Any thoughts or questions would most like be asked (and answered on the boards).

As for the sites, I really like Elmeaux's site.  The layout and set up reminds me looking through a view screen or something like that.  Almost as if some one was veiwing a view-screen on a star destory.
Title: Re: Official UGP Website: Progress
Post by: elmeaux on January 30, 2007, 11:01 AM
Just checking in.

Thanks for the comments. My design was basically an exercise to determine a the look/feel rather than a set funtionality since that was the task listed. The idea I was going for was some sort of data pad, sort of like they watched the pod race with in EP 1. I agree it needs a bit more detailed to be effective.

The alien text was a place holder since nothing was nailed down yet. My idea was for there to be a rollover as Glassman6 mentioned. I also envisioned the lower left buttons to be operational (scroll through highlights) as well as the symbols over the pictures (go to that section).

Also, I'm anticipating the layout changing as needed from page to page but I really need some organized content so I can plan that out. Has anyone gotten that done yet? Text? Pics? In a central location?

I will commit to knocking out the site build but I need someone to commit to getting the content organized. I'm in between projects so the sooner the better because I know my next one is coming up.

Also, I'm thinking there needs to be some type of FAQ. Since the idea is to attract new folks they need to know what it is about.

... Yeah, I musta been drunk there....

Look, Smarty got all the pics together, Elmeaux is working with them, and so the only thing we really need at this point is a write up for each section.

A couple of paragraphs for FIGUREs, VEHICLEs, DIORAMAs, SPONSORs, C4,  & CREDITs should do.

I'm uber-busy for right now, so any body that would like to volunteer for a section, please do. I will love you. Just not physically.

Thanks - TOm

Woot! The site is almost done. Just waiting on some content really.

I've tested the site in FireFox 1.5 & IE 6 on PC and Safari 2 on the Mac. Everything seems to be working though Safari has issues with the transparancy effects.

To check out a "sneak preview" click here (http://www.elmeaux.com/ugp/site). Design works best with 1280x1024+ resolution but 1024x768 will do with minimal scrolling. And as with most sites these days you'll need to have javascript enabled. If you encounter any problems let me know what they are and what browser/platform you are on. Thanks!

There's nothing to be confused about. I wanted to test the site and don't have access to Pen's live server so I put it up on mine. That's why I said "sneak preview"; sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Also, shouldn't the "official site" link be http://www.u-g-p.com ?

And as far as I know, we are still waiting on someone to step up and write some copy for this thing.

Does anyone have a preference as to whether or not I use your real names / put links to your custom web sites / etc on the Web site?

You have until this Tuesday morning (04/27/07) to let me know your preferences.

If I don't hear from you by then, your JD screen names will be used on pictures of your work, and you real names will be used in the Credits section.  :)

Thanks y'all,

I just want to give ten thumbs up to the designer(s) of this site!!!!!!!! It is so kool to navigate through (even the dead end buttons).  Is it poss if you can omit my title as group relations?  It was a title I gave myself when I initiated the idea of having a frapper map but I really did not know what I was doing. You (guy/s) took the map to the next level. Simply put me as contributor . All I have done so far is some cliffs and I hope to provide two civilian land speeders.

That's ok buddy - I get anywhere from 10-20 PM's a day there so I can't keep up!  But, I looked and can't find yours, I'm sorry.   ???

Site looks great to me, I'll run something this week at Yak on it to promote the new site, as well as the threads at Yak and here too.

A true piece of art! This is really an incredible site. Three cheers for all of you that worked on the site. Now we've got to give you some more content to keep things fresh.

There shouldn't be any non-working buttons. Can you let us know where you're encountering them?

The idea of community runs strong thru this project. I really like the idea of the map. It seems to help embody the concept. Enough so that I think you deserve some sort of title. But if you really don't want it, we'll take it down. :(

I figured as much. I'm glad you're on the Yak & try to give customizing so much face time there.   ;D

And Thanks Muchly Phruby!  ;D

Here here! Do sign up if you haven't done so yet! Here's an external link  (http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=2777550&src=flash_map&sig=visitor_map&src_mvid=4208722&origin=unknown&ct=seemore)just in case. And I'm thinking the orange dots are people who have viewed the map, but not joined.

Yup, it's the original. Sorry it's not loading for ya....

The orange is people seems to be those who viewed but not joined. I viewed from Montreal this Weekend eventhough I live in Toronto. Is there away to get rid of that feature?

If you click here on the  'Settings (http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=2777550&s=settings)' link & log in as site admin, you might be able to fix it. I can't see what there are for settings options, but give that a look-see.

HEY! CHEWIE!  ;D

Not sure if you're getting my PMs or not. I tried here & at the Yak (tho I suppose it's only been 14 hours or so). But we'd like to update the site tonight or tomorrow morning. So let me know which is better for the press ;)

And speaking of which: Would JD want to run a little piece on this as well?

Either way, UGP.com will have one heck of an update (tons of new figures & pics) late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Watch for it! And feel free to give feedback :)

It's time once again to hit that hard refresh & see all new stuff on UltimateGroupProject.t-j-p.net (http://ultimategroupproject.t-j-p.net/)! The site has been updated as of 6:45 EDST this morning (sorry Ryan  ;)).

I have just returned from correcting this grievous error.  :-[

My apologies, my friend. But if you hit the refresh, you should now find your name in lights - where it belongs  ;)

EDIT:
To anyone who's put work into this project: Please check the site's Community Page (http://ultimategroupproject.t-j-p.net/community.htm). If you don't see your name there, send it (first & last) to me in a PM so we can give credit where Credit's due for these beautiful custom works. 8)

Ok - I ran a front page mention over at www.yakface.com on the site - I hope that what I set up looks ok.  I tried to show some visual elements to try and spark some interest in the casual reader.

I'm assuming we'll have lots of pics from it to add to the site after C4?

They're part of the news on the front page [try a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5) if you're not seeing the latest news] -  A full-on C4 section will be done as soon as I have time to have a conversation with E on how to do up the new section awesomely. With everything that's been happening lately, I haven't had a good chance to talk with him or even do the section up like the other ones. Plus, I know he's got some very cool ideas for the site's looks!
