Nice job.  I'm a rookie here too, so welcome to the boards!

The green lines are nice and straight.  What kind of paint and/or sealant did you use?  I only ask because he looks a tad too glossy, but that could be due to camera flash, or the fact that it's got shiny clear plastic all around it.

As for the black lines, I assume they're battle damage, or just wear and tear.  For blaster marks, I put a bit of black ink on my finger or a qtip, then just "punch" a spot on the figure.  I'd suggest you blur those lines a tad to make it look more authentic.

All in all a great start to customizing.

Well, if it came from a prison camp/world, I would expect it to be mainly drab and dull in color.  However, I think it'd be cool to see a Slave I with an Imperial look to it.  Paint on!

I wish my first custom looked that good.  Excellent job, and I agree with bjardkerr about the battle scarring - a bit of "uglier" wear and tear might look a little more realistic.

But overall, 100X better than my first customs, and better than most of the stuff I do now after almost 10 years of customizing.   :)

HEY WOW !  ;D Thanks alot guys good to hear I might be on the right track . As more come out im sure i will post them up on here . I admit the gloss is a lil to glossy but the picture is adding to the shine of it alot . I think im gonna try to use a less glossy clear coat next time. do any of you use actual dirt or leave stuff in the sun or out side to age the toy ? It was just sothing on my mind . well anyways thanks again I will use your advise on the one I will be doing today  ;D thanks again .
Title: Re: My first Clone Custom (New Pics)
Post by: CHEWIE on June 5, 2005, 04:42 PM
Color selection might help you in "wear and tear" - I like to mix in several dull colors, like brown, a touch of silver, white and mix them up together for different results.  I haven't tried real dirt, but that's a good idea too.

I looks preety good, esspecially for a first. I agree with the other guys uglier weathering makes it look more realistic. Welcome to JD and the world of customizing! ;D
Title: Re: My first Clone Custom (New Pics)
Post by: Gregorbian on June 5, 2005, 05:43 PM
Everybody already covered my thoughts, so I'll just repeat  :P
Excellent work!  Straight, clean lines are hard to get, and yours look great.  I agree that the weathering needs to be a little dirtier.

You could try dry brushing some "dirt" onto him.  CHEWIE is the resident dry-brushing master, so I'm sure he can help you out a lot more than me if you need some advice on that.  I would take a little bit of brown paint (maybe mix in a drop of black), dab your brush, and then wipe the paint off.  Then lightly brush the clone on parts that you would want to dirty up a bit (knees, shins, boots, elbows, wrists, etc) and you'll get a nice layer of "dirt" on your clone.
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Gregorbian on June 5, 2005, 05:48 PM
A black/Imperial paint scheme sounds good to me.  Maybe a renegade Imperial Naval Officer turned bounty hunter or something like that  :P
You could do a black base coat and then paint some of the details gray and gunmetal.  I think a red or jade green insignia would look cool near the cockpit as well.
Title: Re: My first Clone Custom (New Pics)
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 5, 2005, 05:56 PM
Thanks again for all the nice words. I really am getting into this stuff now . I was trying to figure out a good paint mix for a dusty or dirty look so i will try that brown silver and white mix out . Im gonna need to double check if thats one of the mixes in this thread but sounds good. I was thinking about throwing one of the figs in a tin filled with water and some dirt for a few days , rinse it then see how it looked (on some shoty old toy) just to see how it looks. I also got some new clear coat today. Its not as glossy so it should look alot better on the next one lol i hope. I have 10 sand troopers (clean versions) i got off ebay the other day for 10 bucks so i might test it out on one of them ... Well I am greatfull for all your comments . Anything to make a repaint better is good to hear also .
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 5, 2005, 05:59 PM
Ok I am going with an imperial paint job on it ... the flat black and grey and all that just sounds so cool to me. I was also thinking of a window design that would in some way remind me of a tie fighter but I think im gonna have to think very hard on that detail. Other then that maybe also put the ship logo on the flaps in a green color or somthing. All your guys ideas are awesome .

For a good clear coat and seal, Testors Dull-Cote rocks.  Not shiny at all, and it's fairly durable.  It comes in the little spray cans.

Post by: Commander CuDa on June 6, 2005, 10:05 AM
Hey guys
I made up my mind Im gonna do this paint job to look like a new imperial type slave I
What I need to no is what kind of paint should I use (black and silver or gun metal grey)what brand what exact color and what clear coat brand should i use . Im going to air brush most of it im sure Im also thinking since its not the B fett slave I about making a name change (keeping the slave name involved) and putting ID on the flaps. Also what pilot I should use and maybe just make a custom pilot in a imperial uniform. I cant make up my mind but wanted to ask about your guys thoughts.

I only have experience in painting with good old fashioned acrylics... so I'm sorry that I'm not much help!

 :P
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 6, 2005, 10:25 AM
Even that helps . The only ever thing I ever customised was that green clone commander and afew clones I have been working on with micropens. I was thinking a flat black for the Slave for the base and Aglossy gun metla for the trim around the top or front of the ship.

that looks awesome, Iwanted to see how you did it because Iwant to paint my sa clone in the blue and orange variation. what paint did you use? was it testors paint?
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Gregorbian on June 6, 2005, 02:57 PM
I've never tried airbrushing anything so I'm not sure what help I could be for that.
As for regular paint, I highly recommend Games Workshop (aka Citadel) brand acrylic paitns.  These are very high quality paints that go on really smooth and don't rub off like cheaper craft store acrylics.  I can't say enough great things about Games Workshop products, it's definitely worth the higher price tag.
Specific Colors (off the top of my head):

Chaos Black (flat black)
Boltgun Metal (dark silvery color)
Mithril Silver (light silvery color)

Possible colors for insignias/logos:

Blood Red (bright red color)
Ultramarines Blue (nice, bright blue)
Goblin Green (medium green, kinda like grass)

Hope this helps man, here's the website if you don't have a Games Workshop or Hobby store near you : www.gamesworkshop.com
Title: Re: My first Clone Custom (New Pics)
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 6, 2005, 03:08 PM
Yeh I used testors and about 4 different brushes on it and a glossy clear coat . Although i wont be playing with that glossy stuff anymore the testors green is perfect color i think.
I also tried a .05 micron pen blue (not royal) on a clone today and it was done in about half the time. I would try a micron pic from michaels craft shop. if you pic one up and use it doe about 3 coats to your toy with it and do not touch it or it will smear . It washes off very easy though with water . I added a clear coat to it and it looks very nice . Infact i got a green micron pen a brown one and orange and rubs it on my finger to smear it on the legs and it looks like dirt ... pretty cool.

I saw a web site that was saying they work and it works awesome . It alsmost even looks shaded and the tip on the pin works well but requires a few coats from it. But the green cloan in these pics was just testors paint . I used a boom brissle for the black claw marks on the head and leg . All this playing around with micron pens is working out very well though i can get very very sharp lines and when i had to do it on that green cloan with a long tip paint bursh .... it took forever . I also used liquid masking tape to help me get the lines better. Liquid masking tape just rubs off with your finger when your paint has dried and it looks like glue if you have never used it.
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM ;D
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 6, 2005, 05:11 PM
sweet just what i needed . Im guessing those paints should work on the figs to right ? I hope so I would like to have a pilot who matches . I read up today on the slave I some more. Found that after fett trashed the rest of them at a prison he was in (as the story goes) that they started to be built again well atleast a few it says . And that the Slave I was orignally posted at the prison as test patrol craft of some sort . Kinda cool eh .

Yeh but anyways those paints sound killer so Im gonna go hunt them down and go to down on this slave I over the next week or 2. Thanks again .  ;D
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM

For a little background on the ship (the background that I know anyway), the ship was stolen by Jango Fett from a penal colony/planet (ala Kessel) set within an asteroid.  The story pops up in "Bounty Hunter" the video game for Gamecube and PS2.

There are other Slave I's there and he does destroy them but for fear of pursuit.  I believe I've heard the notion that his is the only Firespray Attack Ship, but other EU contradicts that and the Firesprays are not overly common, but there's more than one.  X-Wing: Alliance for instance features a Firespray in it prominently (a character in the game that is a relation to the character you play has a Firespray as his personal ship for instance).

The paintjob, actually, is exactly as it appears in Episode II (Not to rain on your custom idea...  By all means, it sounds great so I say go with what you want to do).  The color pattern to it in AOTC is that of a Republic "Police" ship (or Republic Standing Military perhaps) which is what it basically is I guess...  Jango just hasn't painted it up yet.  And of course Boba paints his to match his armor.

The planet's dreary, but it's still a Republic controlled instillation so there's an element of military "cleanliness" as well.  It's a great game with the full story that explains Jango's background and how he came to be the choice for cloning....  I recommend playing through it entirely just for the storyline.

EDIT:

BTW, Airbrushing sounds fantastic...  I'm curious to see how the paintjob turns out then...  For insignias, I'd almost lean away from painting (if you're using sorta "known" emblems like the Imperial one or anything like that), and instead print the insignia (often can be found online somewhere) out on sticker paper, or water transfer decal paper...  That way the painting detail is minimized a bit.  Kill markers would be really neat on it too I think (just a thought).

Well here is my 2nd clone (the one in blue) I did him with some micro pens a torch and some clearcoat .
The Green clone my was done by one of my buddies Farid and its his first repaint.

Yup thats pretty much what I read about it . Only thing was I dont see where it says who loaned the prison colony the different slave I's just that he trashed them when he broke out. And that more had been made . I just cant wait to get it done.

I don't know if they were "loaned" though...  I don't recall the game saying that, but rather that they were just the base's collection of pursuit/patrol craft incase of a breakout attempt.

These are cool - I do prefer using acrylics too, but then again, I've never used a paint pen on a figure.

I really like the silver visor on the blue clone.

 :P
Title: Re: My 2nd Re paint and Farids 1st Repaint
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 7, 2005, 03:39 AM
Im still trying to figure out if i like the pen or not ... I like how easy it is to work with and i like how the ink almost looks like its shaded on its own. The smoke on the body and all the ink on it now along with the paint on the visor is stuck on like a rock and that clear coat has dried all the way now So Im kinda starting to like the pen. Maybe a few more coats on it next time but all in all im still not sure what i like better now the paint or the pen .
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 7, 2005, 03:48 AM
yeh I got this book called Star Wars the new essential guide to vehicles & vessels. And its pretty cool full page pictures on the left and on the right full page article about almost every ship in the series and the books. And in it says as Fett was trying to get out of the prison colony he ran into a room full of Slave I ships that were on loan to the colony/prison . But it does not say on loan from who . So thats why Im gonna pretend theres one imperial Slave. Well hope when I get it done its liked.
Title: Re: My first Clone Custom (New Pics)
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 7, 2005, 03:55 AM
Another think i played with today was torching the toy with just the smoke from the flame. If you look at my other post on here (my 2nd repaint and Farids 1st) it shows what I mean . It looks really good in real life. and thanks again for the cool comments everyone .
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 9, 2005, 07:28 AM
Well I got the Slave I that I won for 5 bucks and all in all its in great shape. Here are some parts that are needed for it and what it looks like to start. (like you guys have never seen this before) . The places im pointing at are the parts that are  missing. I was also thinking after getting it I should just take it all apart and Paint the insides also. I was also thinking of repainting the cockpit but not sure how to go about it .Any thoughts are welcome.
Also if you have the parts feel free to email me. Thanks . The ships base I was thinking should be gunmetal grey the area around the **** pit black but im not sure about the flaps guns and the brownish spot where the flaps are attached. But I would love to hear what you guys think. O yeh where can i find the decals for this one also for after the repaint ?

I think it would be cool if you painted the insides, however if you are unable to get the parts that you need, then I would consider using plastic sheets to seal up the ship.  I'm pretty sure that you can pop the windshield off if you wanted to get into the cockpit to paint that up (not positive about this, but I think I remember my vintage one had a windshield that could pop off).
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM updated with pics and questions
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 9, 2005, 11:38 AM
Yeh I think i can coax it outa there . I used some car wax on the window and it looks almost like new. ( i would not do this unless your sure of the wax it may eat the plastic) But the stuff i got is working well so now i need to get it off there and start takin this thing apart .
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM updated with pics and questions

Actually the Slave I in your pictures is the SOTE Slave I (http://www.rebelscum.com/soteKslave1.asp).

The cockpit windshield does come off.  Also, if you are serious about getting inside, there are screws on the bottom and along the left hand side that should allow you to open it up.

Can't wait to see it!

Shadows of the Empire (Expanded Universe Novel)

Now you're talkin, that sounds way cool!
Title: Re: SLAVE I CUSTOM updated with pics and questions
Post by: Commander CuDa on June 9, 2005, 11:14 PM
Yeh i been lookin over the slave I doing leds in it should be easy if im takin it apart .  Im not sure about being able to do the burners with lights yet but im gonna try . but for sure in the cargo hold and the cockpit . Its gonna be a week or 2 cause I got the lights from a guy on ebay and the battery and switch .  The switch should be on the bottom of the slave but to keep it looking a lil more realistic it might go in the roof of the cargo hold between the 2 lights. Is crystal blue cool or should i use a purple or red in the cockpit and crystal blue in the cargo hold ? It might be even longer I have a baby that should be born any time now so I might be gone a lil bit lol .

I would think red for the cockpit (warning lights and stuff), and blue for the cargo hold, but that's just my humble opinion.

It might be even longer I have a baby that should be born any time now so I might be gone a lil bit lol .

That's awesome!  Congrats, I hope all goes well.  :)

I have seen tons of those. Hasbro is making one too, it is in the new 5-pack battle sets, though it isn't the greatest. But yeah lot's of people have done them, I've seen them done in the CW animated style, phruby did a great one, and realistic style. Look around through older threads these were kind of a craze back during the clone wars, though nowhere near as big as custom EP3 clones.

Yeah, it could be a quick pop and swap depending on the Clone you use... some of them have those ginormous head nobs though... might need to do a bit of cutting.  I had to do some cutting to get a Rykrof Enloe head onto a Clone body -

Should be similar for an Obi Wan... also, some sort of Jedi robes might need to be added too.

Not exactly the route I'd take, but the robes are there for reference.  I would definitely try and use some sort of cloth goods or cloth material for the robes.

Thanks CuDa,
I used a #6 Quick Draw Clone from ROTS (I made this guy before the #41 SA Clone came out) and a  #1 Obi-Wan head.  The helmet is from an Ep. II Bootleg Clone Trooper that I hollowed out.  Pretty easy custom, I recommend giving it a try.

How did you hollow it (the helmet) out and should I use a #41 clone ? I was kinda also thinking about a tank gunner because he already has a helmet ...  I just wanna make one bad now that I seen this one ... I have to say its my favorite obi ever. Naw I wont mess up a tank gunner ... I will do what you did soon as i get the kinda clone you used. Very cool

You could definitely use the #41 Clone (the only reason that I didn't was because he wasn't out yet when I made this guy).  Another alternative would be to buy a CW SA Clone Trooper (the Entertainment Earth figure) and use a Clone Wars Deluxe Clone Trooper on Speeder Bike (he had a removable helmet).
To hollow out the helmet, just use a Dremel with a grinding bit.  It doesn't take too long, but you'll have to drill out a lot of the plastic.  One good thing about the bootleg clone helmet is that it's bigger than the SA Clone Trooper helmet (and thus, more in scale with the rest of the figure) and there is more room to hollow out.
Here are some more quick tips:
- You need to pop off the helmet of the Clone Trooper body and cut off the neck-ball-joint, but make sure to leave 1 or 2 of the black neck rings (if you're using a #6 clone).  If you're using a #41 Clone, just cut off the neck-ball-joint.
- You probably don't need to cut down Obi-Wan's neck peg (although I did by accident :P), but if you find that the neck doesn't fit properly onto the figure (there should be a hole between the shoulders where the neck-ball-joint used to be), just take a small screw and screw it into Obi-Wan's head to act as a surrogate neck.  You can insert the head w/screw neck by placing the clone trooper body in hot water for a couple of minutes (to soften the plastic) and then push the head/screw neck into the neck hole.

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.  It's not that hard of a custom so you shouldn't have too much trouble.  Remember, the Dremel is key! ;)

Ok well My Base coats are down and it looks pretty good . I still have lights details and need my side door, ramp, and need to replace the window bubble just cuase the one i had needed replaced. I just did the grey on it cause it was really scratched up pretty bad. I had to primer it and paint it .

the led lights are gonna go like this ...

1 in the cockpit pointing up at the face of the pilot from the joy stick area. (color red)
2 in the cargo hold (red)
2 on the bottom where the rockets are maybe 8 very small lights 4 in each rocket.

So im not gonna be done tonight thats for sure lol .

Heres whats done so far.

This bottom pic is not a complete job ... i just wanted people to get my idea a little better. Infact I repained the very bottom or back of the slave grey also and the chair inside the cockpit. More pics to come ... as you can see I can do custom hungry man dinners also ...

got any ideas let me know . . . and dont forget im replacing the bubble lol . and shading and texture will be the last thing i do .

Worked late on it, eh?  I know that feeling.  I worked until about 3am on my crap last night.  Feel like I'm hung over today!   :D

If I may ask, how did you make the cockpit cover?  Is it painted, or another material altogether?

I thought I was going to go to bed about 2 am last night but wound up staying up all night working on this thing . I feel the same way chewie "hung over" I think the paint in the air in here has helped that though.
The cockipit window was about 4 paint and dry sessions then clear coat. it looks good in the photos and actually in real life. But I need a new window becuase im putting lights in this thing someday soon. Another thing i thought of if i can find it was a spay mirror finish type of paint so it looks like a mirror . But with the lights it just wont work with a painted window. right now Im painting some of the side trim and should have a few updated pics in hour or two . Well back to work . (on 3 hours sleep) :o

The Slave C (Slave I) repaint is done for now I have to wait for lights and then once they get here take it all apart again drill it and wire it... But I think this is the end result .The white spot on the nose is there becuase Im going to find a decal of a imperial logo to go right there soon as i find one that fits ... im not even going to try to do one by hand lol .

So what do you think let me know incase I make changes later on. Be honest incase I agree and make changes.

Wow, this is looking better and better (and is a great addition to this section).  We don't make enough vehicles around here... it's good to see something doing that.  You've put in a ton of work into this, and aren't taking any shortcuts that I can see.  I can't wait to see the final pics!

In order to get a helmet, you might need to get a full bodied bootleg Clone.  There used to be a ton of them on ebay...

Thanks alot !
Its prob gonna be a week or more before I get the lights and get it wired up . Plus I need to get a imperial logo for the nose of the ship. the door and ramp and window all need to be added still. But other then that I have been having some fun with this one . It may take longer then that even because I have a baby girl that should be born any day now plus about 50 other big things going on in my house. But soon as the wirse get here I will wire it. while i had it apart I found some easy ways to get it wired and keep the wires hid pretty well. Cant wait tell its done .

Thanks again for looking :D

Are you serious ?
They look awesome ... how do they look when people buy em off ebay ? Are then in boxes or sold in groups ?   Do the arms and legs and heads move around ?

crap I would buy 10 of those easy just to make customs.

I got mine off of eBay and from www.alliancecollectibles.com .  I like them a lot, but they only have 3 points of articulation (shoulders, head).  They're good to fill out a diorama, but they are a little bigger than the hasbro clone troopers.  Still, the marching ones make for some great displays.
They come as 10-packs in individual sealed plastic bags (all are sealed in a larger plastic bag).
On eBay, try searching "Bootleg Clone" or "Custom Clone", you should be able to pick them up for $2 - $3 each.
www.alliancecollectibles.com used to have them for $20 a set, but a few months ago they raised their price to $40 a set I think.  Still, that's only $4 a clone, but considering their lower-quality, it might not be worth it.  I would definitely recommend checking eBay first.

Thank you !

I just thought of somthing I might try to do on it . If you look on the wings you will see a blue and red dot  on the tip of each wing. Well I was thinking since the bottom of the wing always faces down i could shrink rap wires and run them along the bottom of the wing with 2 led lights that blink slowly and when they blink its not just on and off its a fade in and fade out . and run the lights on the cockpit and cargo hold on a different system then the lights on the wings to make the battery last longer.
A blue and red light on each wing were the same color dots are already.

Im also trying to make a cool custom pilot of some sort but Im not having any luck with that one ... I was thinking of repainting  Grievous' Guard and takin of his cape and adding differnt guns. Almost giving him a terminator feel. but not sure about that one yet.

Well Im glad you guys like this one  ;D thanks again !

Cool pilot.  Is he a clone or did he take a clone trooper's armor?
I think it would be cool if you gave him some accessories (like Fett).  Maybe a cape and some extra weapons... ;)

I just changed my mind on this guy . Im makin some changes that should make him look 100% better. Pics should be added today in the next few hours or so.He is getting a cape from a clone commmander and helmet and weapons plus he will have the old clones commanders suit bound and tied up in the back of the slave C . So it will be makde to look like and empty suit. Im gonna dremel out a clone commander OMG NOOO !!! lol

I think im going to make him a bounty hunter killer.
Someone who Kills the bounty hunters and takes What he wants kinda dude.
Aruala (a-roo-ala) is his name . Named after my Daughter but backwards lol, her names Alaura.  ;D

That sounds pretty cool to me.
If you bought a bootleg clone, why don't you dremel out the armor from that figure (that's what I'm planning to do with the extra bootleg clone bodies that I have) instead of sacrificing a clone commander?
Cool stuff. ;D

I guess I could do that Its just now I will need a clone commanders head hands skirt weapons and visor . My guess is in shipping and all that if i ever find that stuff anyways it will cost more then a new clone commander . Plus this way teh aromor will look clean and new when tied into a bundle on the floor of the slave c cargo area. :D

The only thing that I would add is maybe a backpack or some more ammo pouches to really set this guy apart from a regular Clone Commander figure.  Good job.

Thanks I was affraid it sucked lol .
I actually never have done any custom stuff. Just a few model cars when I was little but thats it. This ship and figure are my 3rd fig custom and 1st ship custom. The ship is still needing its LED's to be installed and the cargo door and ramp but thats all im gonna do to it after this.
I just have had alot of fun with these clones. And always thought the slave I was the coolest ship in the entire series but always thought it should be black. I still love the original but black just always seems to have a "back off" look to it. But doing custom star wars stuff is now almost a bigger hobby then I have ever had and I have only been collecting them for about 2 months or so. But im glad its liked and thanks for the kind words  ;D
