Title: Joecon 2011
Post by: spiderpumpkin on December 27, 2010, 08:17 PM
The Club has started to post pictures of the Mission Brazil II set.

http://www.gijoecon.com/fl2011/RAH11set-preview.cfm

Anyone going to Florida at the end of March?  Unfortunately, I'll be missing another one.

It still seems hard to justify over $20 per figure when they are just repaints.  Leatherneck still has a Gung-Ho head.  For the $305 plus Club Membership for the set I thought we would at least get a unique Leatherneck head sculpt.

I'm really psyched to see more of the 12" set.  I think it's a great idea and I would really like to pick it up.  I've never been a fan of the Python Patrol so even though I think the Mission Brazil Joe figures will probably be cool, and I'd really like the Cover Girl from the set, I can't justify buying that set.

I was hoping to be able to go to the con this year since Orlando isn't entirely out of the budget, but it's looking less likely.  I think to justify it I'd have to drive and without someone to car pool with that's probably not going to happen.  I'm still thinking about it, though.

For the first time in a LONG time I am going to be getting and keeping the set.

It will finish off the Python Patrol for me and a Mission Brazil set (I had 2 of these back in the original run because I wanted the "Desert" leatherneck).

I even like the 12inch set.

I am not sure I am attending, we will be at Disney earlier in March instead.

Can you buy the set from the Club and have it shipped to you? I won't be able to go to Florida then, unfortunately. But I'd really like to have this set.

BTW, Mainframe and the Python Tele-Viper are up.

Yes, you can always order a set and have it shipped.  I'd have to double check, but usually if you order before a certain date you can get free shipping on the sets.

Info on the con freebie and souvenirs is already posted.

Free item is an Amadillo.  The rest:
Python Patrol Specialist 2-pack (I've read Relampago & Gatilho but no confirmation yet): LE 650
Python Patrol Stinger w/ Motor-Viper: LE 500
Python Patrol Water Moccasin: LE 400
Python Patrol Tele-Viper Parachute Officer: LE 500
Silver Edition Cobra Commander: LE 500

Also the carded Dial Tone we already knew about (LE 600)

No word yet on exactly what the Cobra Commander is yet.  And no pricing info.

12" Collectors get an AT Astronaut Space Diver: LE 200

Depending on how he turns out, would love a shot at the AT Astronaut.  Hopefully he'll make it online like the Henchman did last year.  He was limited to 200 also and although they sold a lot at the show, he didn't sell out.

I'm kind of confused, but are these exclusives made by Hasbro?  I saw some 3.75" Adventure Team guys posted somewhere, and my god they were the coolest things ever.  The little army dude would've made the ultimate green shirt, to me.  He just needed a bunch of different headsculpts.  He was far superior to the 25th style Green Shirts.  I didn't like them, mostly due to the arms.

That AT guy rocked though.  They all did.  But I just wasnt' sure if these were Hasbro approved things or what.  Just curious. :)

All of the Fan Club action figures are commissioned by the Club and made by Hasbro using mostly existing Hasbro sculpts/molds.  The Club has commissioned new heads and even paid to have some existing tools rehabbed.  Hasbro basically makes older molds, that aren't being used, available to the Club to create new characters or new versions of characters.

There was actually just a debate on Hiss Tank about whether or not to include the Fan Club figures in a "complete" collection, meaning are they Hasbro toys that are canon or are they some type of bootleg/unofficial creation that should be thought of outside of the retail store Hasbro collection.

IMO, they're canon because they're made with full approval of Hasbro, by Hasbro.  I don't see it any different than a store exclusive requested by Walmart.  In most cases, they're better because the Fan Club has had those new heads created for some of their figures.

The Adventure Team figures are really cool.  I've picked up the Venom/Commander and Land Adventurer sets so far but have to get on the other two soon.  The bodies use existing parts from various 25th figures and the heads are new.

Are they expensive E?  I'd like one, just to have it for the weirdness.  I really just would like the GIJoe and the box, none of the stuff it comes with.

If Hasbro's making it I really dont' see how you can debate whether it's part of the Joe line...  If someone else were making it using hasbro sculpts, rather than paying Hasbro to do them, then I'd see the other side's point, but if Hasbro's the one making them I really can't see anyone's point that "these aren't part of the line".

The sets are kind of expensive, but "expensive" is always subjective when it comes to exclusives.  The Venom/AT Commander set is $44.99 for paying members (Officers) while the Land, Air and Sea Adventurer sets are $34.99 each.

The Land, Air and Sea Adventurers come with a vehicle while the Venom/Commander set comes with a giant, man-eating plant (explained in the Club magazine comic/file cards).

General's Joes has reviews of all the AT sets with excellent photos. (http://generalsjoes.com/category/gijoe/gi-joe-reviews/collectors-club-reviews/)

If you want one of the sets, LMK and I can order it for the Officer's pricing.

Thanks E, but I'm going to probably pass, just due to the cost.  All I wanted is the guy just to stand on my desk...  Loved fuzzhead Joes.  I really think those AT guys would look great with different heads though, as just generic Joe army builders.  I'd go nuts picking up those if I was a collector and they were available in that way.

I didn't register this year because I couldn't make Orlando.  But if you have someone that could pick one up for me I'd be grateful.  I don't have a good feel for the 12" set this year, if everything will sell out or if they'll make the Club store again like last year's Henchman (which sold out quickly online).

Zoinks.  Someone over at HissTank.com just posted the price list and the Space Diver is $69 + tax.  He does look like he has a more detailed outfit and more accessories than the Henchman, but that's still $20 more than last year's figure.

The announcements from Hasbro look pretty good.

I especially like the Renegades Scarlett (looks excellent, very attractive head sculpt), Storm Shadow and Law & Order.

The best announcement is Kwinn.  The head sculpt is a little off, I thought it should be a little rounder, more full, but overall it's an excellent figure and I can't wait to pick him up.

I'm kind of disappointed that there's no Baroness and there seems to be a heavy concentration of Renegads figures even though, as we know now, the cartoon is basically cancelled.  Still, the figures all look pretty well done.

The Data Viper looks kind of iffy, though, and a Zombie Viper?  Really?  Can we cut the zombification of everything.  Now.  Please.

Oh, and $80 on the SDCC Skystriker/Starscream repaint?  I think that's kind of high, but it looks excellent, the box art is incredible and if HTS.com gets them, I would like to own one.

I really like Airtight and Lifeline. There is really a lot of Renegades figures, which doesn't make sense since the cartoon is done with for now, but a lot of them still look pretty cool.
Title: Re: Joecon 2011

Hasbro's lead time is so far in advance that they kind of have to release those figures since they were so far into production, and they couldn't have anticipated the cartoon getting pulled.  Well, they could have, I guess, since they own the damn network.  I still think the whole thing with Renegades being pulled is shady.

Overall, I think there's some excellent stuff being shown off.  Hasbro's biggest problem right now is getting retail to buy in to what they're putting out.  Without Walmart, we won't see half this stuff.  TRU can't be counted on anymore and Target is devoting minimal shelf space and currently seems to be stuck on wave 2 of the POC figures.  I don't follow store finds posts on the Joe boards, but what I did see was that Target got some early wave 3 shipments and then basically has been cut off.  I don't recall ever seeing a report of wave 4 at Target and Walmart only seemed to get it briefly before most stores pulled their Joe sections.

E, I could not agree with you more.  Zombies?  Really?  Time and resources and an Army builder slot were wasted on FREAKING ZOMBIES?

When a realistic-ish line starts fighting Monsters it always announces the end of the line (or at least should)...  Joe incarnations of the past ended after "The Intruders", Space Marine Aliens.

I assume we will now see Vampire-Viper's, Werewolf-viper's, Ghost Vipers (Basically an empty bubble on a card, pure Marketing genius), Franken-joe, Mummy-Trooper, Alien-Guard and Walking Amoeba's.. oh wait those are in the Renegades line.

I pretty much quit looking at pictures as soon as I saw the Zombie, so I am just guessing.

I remember back when Joe was innovative and lead the industry, now they trail behind and pick up the droppings.   It is disappointing.

Ya I don't quite understand the $50 difference in price, but I will try and own one.  Hoping that Zarana doesn't disappear as quickly as Slaughter did last year.

I really liked the figures shown at the show...  Sadly I think I may have to pick up a few this year.  Tunnel Rat, Hazard Viper, and Stalker are my tops...  I will say, I kind of dig the Zombie Viper in that it goes well with the Hazard Viper, you have to admit.  There's a "pattern" there.

I'm into Zombies though...  I just think it'd be cool with that one particular cobra as like its "handler" or something.

Some cool stuff...  I really dig a lot of the dfferent figures and I think the Renegades stuff looks great.  If there wasn't Star Wars I'd be 100% in on Joe I think.  It'd be hard to resist anyway.

Believe it or not, those two figures are connected! The Hazard Viper (along with the Cobra Commander) come with containers fill with blue stuff, which "creates" the zombies. It's nice to have a loose "story" being established.

That is very neat then...  I'm ok with that then.  It's different...  it doesn't sound like it'd expand.  I'm into the whole "re-animation" aspect.  That seems like the type of f'd up stuff Cobra would try doing.  Mind-Bender getting a figure that pertains to that sub-plot would've been neat too.  Or even just a generic Cobra scientist of sorts.

On Scum someone posted some more pics of that Zombie Viper.  I initially thought those things on the ground next to him were tree limbs (doesn't make sense - I know) - turns out they are giant over-sized arms to put on your Zombies.  So now the Zombies aren't just Zombies - they are Mutant Zombies!

I am right there with you Jesse - if not for Star Wars, I'd be going nuts with GI JOE stuff right now... it's really nice how much they've improved things with the modern figuers... the first few waves of 25th stuff, I was glad to see the figures but the quality really wasn't that great on a lot of them.  They got better near the tail end of it, but when you see what they are doing now, this stuff is really damn good.
Title: Re: Joecon 2011
Post by: efranks on April 6, 2011, 03:42 PM
I think 25th had some shaky releases due to the fact that Hasbro hadn't originally planned a full carded line.  But when it really took off, they scrambled and got the line rolling.  But I agree, what they're putting out now is not only some of the best stuff they've ever done but some of the best stuff in the 4" scale out of any company.

I really liked most of what was shown at the con, even the Renegades figures look great.  But did anyone else notice the lack of vehicles?  Yes, they have the excellent new Skystriker coming and the VTOL Cobra vehicle looks nice, but the other two vehicles were repaints (Hiss and VAMP).  Those Alpha vehicles that are supposed to be coming, Hiss Scout and Ashiko, are now going to be online exclusives and it seems that Hasbro may be giving up that shelf space at retail.

As I mentioned, I think that if Hasbro can't get Walmart back on board for the Joe line, we may not see some of this stuff get released.  There's just a real lack of retailer support for Joe right now, and it's too bad.  With Renegades getting pulled and the troubling news about the feature film, it feels like an uphill battle for the toy line.

Received my Dial-Tone today:

Dial-Tone (http://twitpic.com/4opesz)

I ordered an extra when I renewed my membership, I always take the 12" figure as my free item, and after the show, as some of you may know, had the Club offer me a carded figure because the bagged membership figure was oversold.  Paid an extra $5 for him, but I was more than happy to have the carded figure for less than what eBay is charging.

Still, I'd like to get a bagged figure so that I can have a loose figure, but I'm pretty happy having this in my collection.
